The National Hair & Beauty Federation (NHBF) has launched the Hair & Beauty Industry – Top 100 Influencers Index for a second year. The index recognises talent that uses social media to influence, educate and innovate the hair and beauty sectors and saw skincare expert, Caroline Hirons, scoop the top spot last year. NHBF is inviting nominations for individuals you consider to be most influential in the industry on social media, including hairdressers, barbers, beauty therapists, nail technicians, make-up artists and aestheticians. Bringing it

home Get to know Nicola Sawyer, the talented nail stylist behind this month’s front cover & first UK winner of the Next Top Nail Artist competition…

T

HELENA BIGGS REPORTS

he Next Top Nail Artist competition, founded by NAILS magazine and sponsored by CND™ and KUPA Inc., has been pushing the boundaries of nail artistry for nine seasons; uncovering incredible talent and showcasing imagination and skill.

It invites contestants from across the globe to enter, with a judging panel scrutinising every brush stroke and sculpt. From hundreds of entrants, 18 are chosen to create a pre-challenge, before 12 finalists go on to create mani masterpieces over 10 weeks based on a challenging brief – with a finalist eliminated every Friday. Nicola Sawyer, a nail professional from Lincoln, showed exceptional nail art skill – scooping first place in five of the weekly challenges and scoring a place in the final. She was joined in the top three by Denmark’s Marija Sechovcova and Nancy Janssen of the Netherlands, who were flown to Orlando for the winner’s presentation on 5 June during the Premiere Orlando event. The trio enjoyed activities and a day of filming with CND™’s Jan Arnold, NTNA producer, Beth Livesay, and game master, Winnie Huang, before last season’s winner, Emily Nash, announced Nicola as champion. CHALLENGE 1: Strength in Colour

CHALLENGE 2: Colour Me KUPA

Promising to use the momentum to continue to uplift and elevate the nail industry and the nail professional, Nicola said of her win: “I’m not going to waste this. I’m going to work to raise standards in the UK and I want to inspire other nail artists.” Let’s get to know her…

Nail industry beginnings

Nine years ago, Nicola unconventionally entered the nail industry courtesy of her husband, Paul. “He runs a beauty wholesaler in Lincoln that needed an even number of participants for a gel nail course, so I stepped in at the last minute,” she reveals. “To my surprise, I loved it. Up until that point, I had only ever had my nails done for my wedding!” With the support of her family, Nicola furthered her training and quit her 9-5 job, starting her business, Nail Couture Lincoln, from her dining room. As her client base boomed, she commandeered the annex next to the main house. “Working from home offered me the flexibility I needed with three young sons, and meant I didn’t have the worry of a commute or rent,” Nicola continues. The personable nail pro enjoys the variety that each week presents. She predominantly teaches budding techs on a oneCHALLENGE 3: Over The Top

COVERSTORY “I had around three weeks to wait before I found out whether I had made it into the top 18, and due to the time difference with the US, the email notification came in the middle of the night. Paul woke me to reveal the good news and I thought he was joking at first! For the rest of the day, I juggled feelings of shock with sheer joy.” In this email, Nicola was tasked to complete a pre-challenge; a nail design with a ‘Very Peri’ theme as a nod to the Pantone Colour of the Year 2022. Scoring focused on attention to the brief, technical ability, the corresponding video explanation, ‘wow’ factor and professionalism – with 12 making it through to the competition stage.

to-one basis and guest educates at her local college, around tending to the nails of select clients and furthering her own skills. “One day, I’ll be teaching extreme length nail styling skills, and the next I’ll be applying a simple nude shade to a client’s nails,” she laughs. It was on a nail photography course with Rachael Wilders that Nicola learned the skills to conceptualise this month’s front cover; an image she has banked for some time before finding the perfect platform through which to showcase it. And there’s no better time than now, to tie in with her competition win and elevate her profile further. It was Rachael who encouraged Nicola to make time for her art skills. “Thankfully, I took her advice on board, because it got me to the top spot of NTNA!” Nicola smiles.

Nicola’s NTNA journey

“The competition was very demanding,” Nicola continues. “Each week’s challenge was announced on the Friday, which was also the same day an elimination was announced. For each challenge, we had to submit an image of our work, a 300-word write-up, link to a YouTube video and TikTok post.” Alongside Jan, Beth and Winnie, judges were season eight winner, Emily Nash, and Mia Do, master educator for KUPA Inc. They were joined by a guest judge each week; typically a former NTNA finalist. “As we got closer to the final, we also had to answer questions from the judges and produce a live demo that was streamed on CND™’s Instagram page,” says Nicola. “And the competition didn’t end when we got to Orlando. Nancy, Marija and I had to explain our final pieces to a room of around 100 nail professionals and sponsors. This was a test to see if we could handle the pressure of talking to a room of people and answering questions from the audience. It was a steep learning curve.”

Nicola almost missed the chance to enter NTNA, after she nearly deleted a message from NAILS magazine asking if she wanted to apply. “I thought the competition looked like hard work, which it was, but I soon realised I had nothing to lose,” she reveals. “I was nervous to compete but attended some photographic and extreme length courses at Team Gorgeous which gave me the confidence to enter, then I submitted my application; a writeup, video and images of my nail work.

Orlando calling

Nicola was educating when she received the email confirming she was in NTNA’s top three and being flown out to Orlando. “My student and I both cried and it was all systems go from there as I booked my required Covid-19 test, taxis and purchased outfits for the trip,” Nicola reveals. I had never been to the USA before, so I was really excited!”

CHALLENGE 6: Monogram Madness

COVERSTORY

Nicola received her itinerary for the trip a week in advance. On her arrival, she met fellow finalist, Nancy Janssen, in the lift of the hotel and immediately struck up a bond. The duo met with other finalist, Marija, and her husband shortly after and they got to know each other over dinner. “The three of us have very different personalities and nail art styles,” Nancy Janssen & Nicola Nicola comments. “It felt bizarre to meet them in person when, for three months, I had been watching them on-screen. It was a fantastic way to kick off the trip.” Sunday 5 June saw the awards night and hotly anticipated announcement of the winner. “It was a surreal evening,” Nicola continues. “Many former contestants had flown out to meet us and there were rows upon rows of chairs with a stage, lights and faces from the audience staring at us; eager to find out who had won. Nancy was announced as second runner up, then Marija as first runner up – at which point I threw my hands up to my face in disbelief. I was the winner of NAILS Next Top Nail Artist season nine!”

Nicola & Helena

Nicola was swarmed by members of the audience, including Scratch’s Helena, who offered up their congratulations. “I phoned my husband and eldest son who had stayed up in the UK until the early hours to hear the news,” Nicola reveals. “My inbox was flooded with well wishes from clients, friends and family, and techs I had never met said that they had been following my journey.

CHALLENGE 7: Mediterranean Dream

20 SCRATCHMAGAZINE.CO.UK

“Without the support of my family and extremely understanding clients and students, I could not have competed in NTNA. I took the decision early on to reduce my client base as I knew the competition would be all-encompassing. I was lucky that I was in a position to do this and cancelled personal training days and holidays to complete the challenges on time. It was a huge sacrifice but I am overjoyed to have won.” Nicola receives a cash prize, trophy and opportunity to participate in various CND™ and KUPA Inc. projects. “One month on, it’s still sinking in that this NTNA season is over and I am the first UK winner. It was such a huge part of my life for three months,” Nicola smiles. “The contest was a big commitment but so rewarding and I feel that my career choice has been validated. Being a nail artist requires a great amount of skill, which should be recognised. “Competing allows you to stretch your creative wings and takes you out of your comfort zone. Once you get past the fear, you enter the learning zone and see growth. Life begins at the end of your comfort zone!” So what’s next for Nicola now she’s bagged the NTNA top spot and a Scratch cover? “I will continue to further my skills and want to train with some incredible artists overseas,” she reveals. “I might even throw my hat in the ring for Nailympia! But for now, I’m proud to be an ambassador for the nail industry as the season nine NAILS Next Top Nail Artist.” www.nailcouturelincoln.co.uk /nailcouturelincoln @nailcouturelincoln

JAN ARNOLD

NTNA judge & producer “Through running NTNA, I have learned that the competitors who don’t show their stress and keep a cool head often prevail, and Nicola exuded confidence and composure for the entire competition. There was a neverending amount of detail in every piece she created, and even when I saw her finale piece in person, I noticed details I hadn’t seen before. She is full of surprises! “Her final design to the ‘Big Impact’ brief was really unique. I have never seen an NTNA competitor take pieces from past designs and use them in the finale piece to depict a journey. It was a brilliant idea and made her whole set seem familiar, yet very fresh. We asked competitors to ‘go big’ for the final piece and Nicola didn’t disappoint. It also looks like a trophy, which may have been a subconscious way to channel the win! “Nicola is the full NTNA package. She is an extraordinary artist, teacher, videographer and public speaker. When I watched her interact with her fellow nail pros in Orlando, she did so beautifully and gracefully. She is a natural! She sets the example we are looking for when naming a winner and brings fresh ideas to the table while remaining professional. Artistically, she holds our interest, and personally, she inspires us. “I’m excited for her to experience post-NTNA life. She told me immediately about her Scratch cover, and I know how much a cover means to a nail artist, especially with so few publications in print these days. The fact that our industry is sharing her story with the world is beyond exciting and I think it’s encouraging to all of us who work hard and persevere. The beautiful thing about winning NTNA is that it puts people on the map. I can’t wait to see who takes notice of Nicola and supports her going forward, because she has so much to offer.”

NTNA head judge “Nicola’s vision, technique and storytelling got her to the top of the game, but it is her confidence, wit and sense of humour that sets her apart. As a precision artist, her attention to detail and imaginative elements worked together to create layers of depth and dimension every week. “In the final deliberation, the judging panel considered the incredible journey of learning, expression and growth for all of the finalists. They were equally inspiring and the decision was very difficult. In looking at the finale challenge, we realised that the messaging from Nicola was visionary and so very relevant to even the newest of nail pros. “Nicola speaks to all pros; emerging and experienced. She stands tall and proud to connect the creative with the intellect to elevate the standards of our profession. She can handle the demands of being the winner and spokesperson of season nine with grace and passion. Being crowned the winner encompasses a responsibility to endure the journey of winning, but also lead and mentor the next step of that journey. We believe that Nicola has the ability to handle it all into the future. “She carries a high regard and standard for the profession and will defend it to the end. I believe she will inspire and mentor to elevate, educate and expose the richness of a career in nails.”

“We asked competitors to ‘go big’ for the final piece and Nicola didn’t disappoint. It also looks like a trophy, which may have been a subconscious way to channel the win!” Beth Livesay

An ombré version of the French manicure, baby boomer nails date back to 1940s Europe: the beginning of the post-WW2 baby boomer generation period which lasted until the mid ‘60s. At the time, two of the most popular nail colours were frosted pink and white, so the style incorporated both.

Kawaii culture has roots in the 1970s with a youth movement rebelling against traditional Japanese culture, through everything from food to fashion and of course, nails. Translations of ‘kawaii’ include ‘cute’, ‘tiny’ and ‘loveable’, and nail designs often incorporate characters, embellishments and 3D additions.

Nail polish is reported to originate in China around 3000 B.C. and was used to convey social status. The Zhou dynasty who ruled in 600 B.C. were known for wearing gold and silver on nails, and if a non-royal was to wear these colours, they would face the death penalty.

Inspired by the Aurora Borealis or Northern Lights, this style originated in South Korea and creates a magical, holographic effect that depicts the light display. In line with nail product innovations, two sheer nail styles have emerged in Japan and Korea. Are you a freelance tech seeking a flexible way to experience salon life? Or a salon owner looking to boost income & business? Explore how renting a space could work for you… BY CHLOE RANDALL & REBECCA HITCHON With over 60% of people working in the hair and beauty industry reported to be freelance – and this figure increasing every year, the ways that techs and salon owners can manage their work pattern is changing. Renting a desk or space in a salon is one method switching up the sector. “The flexible working lifestyle is certainly becoming more popular, and we believe it’s because more people see it as an effective way of working,” explains Yasin Alimam, founder of space renting platform, HotPatch. But how do you know if renting a space will work for you or your business? And what do you need to know before doing so? Read on to check out tips from those in the know… Yasin Aliman

LANDLORDS Hiring out a space in the salon is common practice for many hair and beauty business owners, who decide to share their salon with other professionals to aid flexibility and attract a more varied client base.

Will it work for me? “When choosing my own premises, I knew I didn’t want somewhere small where I would be on my own all day, as I prefer a busy salon atmosphere,” explains Rosemary Dixon, owner of Blush Beauty in Rossendale. “The layout of the nail desks in my salon is perfect for group conversation where we can all laugh and chat or, if the client Rosemary Dixon prefers, have a one-to-one with their nail tech. Renting space out to a fellow pro means my rent and bills are covered and I gain a bit of extra income. “If I have space available, I would usually advertise on social media but people are always asking about availability even without advertising, so it usually gets snapped up quickly. My main requirements are a good work ethic and to be clean and tidy. “If a pro is interested in renting a space, I meet up with them at the salon to get a feel of how they would work there and whether they would fit in. I can usually see their work standard via their social media accounts, and a friendly personality and professionalism is important. “Rent is paid weekly or monthly and is a fixed amount, so the therapist or tech is free to earn and work as much as they want without factoring in a percentage for me. They provide their own tools and materials and I have the Ovatu booking system which the pro is welcome to use. It means we can see when each other is in the salon and take appointments for each other if the phone rings. The option is there for online booking through my website or they can control their own diary. “To me, anyone renting space from me has their own business and I am their landlord. I wouldn’t want anyone to feel restricted about what they can or can’t do in the workspace, so they are free to work as they wish.” @blushbeautyrossendale 32 SCRATCHMAGAZINE.CO.UK

Will it work for me? “I decided to rent a chair after previously working on a mobile basis alongside a salon job. I found that I wasn’t earning as much through my mobile work,” reveals Katy Mayer of KRM Beauty, who is based at Love Beauty Gatley in Greater Manchester, a Scratch Stars finalist for Nail & Katy Mayer Beauty Salon of the Year 2022. “This was due to the time spent travelling and setting up/packing down at each appointment, but now I am based in one location so can host more appointments in a day.”

Holly Morris-Last

Katy enjoys the work flexible hours that chair renting offers, an advantageous aspect that Holly Morris-Last of Hollystic Nails, echoes to Scratch about renting a desk at Blush Beauty. “I also get the perks of working in an energetic salon with a team of beauty therapists that I can share knowledge and products with, without the stress or expense of owning a salon. I also know my weekly outgoings so I can budget effectively,” she comments. Both pros say that with their work advertised under a reputable business, they are positively represented and benefit from an already established client base. “Equally, the salon benefits from my clients booking other beauty services when they visit me,” Holly adds.

Blush Beauty, Rossendale

But what elements could hold a tech back from renting a space? Katy and Holly explain that because they have had to register as self-employed, it’s their responsibility to pay themselves a wage, complete their tax return and get insured. While Katy highlights if you are sick or on holiday, you may not get paid for this time, Holly points out that you benefit from a network of techs to send your clients to if you cannot fulfil their appointment.

Renting & letting through Founder of HotPatch, Yasin, tells Scratch that the platform is home to a “community of professionals that enjoy working differently, want to be their own boss and not get tied up in lengthy contracts and permanent workspace.” Simple-to-use and transparent, the service is suited to “any nail tech that is looking to expand their business, grow their clientele and work on their own terms,” he says. “For salon owners, HotPatch helps them so that their business is firing on all cylinders. “Listing your chair means that you can begin making more money and attracting more clients where that space was previously going unused. As long as you have the capacity,

this is a great way to attract talent wanting to work on a flexible basis.” Those looking to rent a space can sign up at www.hotpatch.com and browse the ‘Hair & Beauty’ category. Shoot & score in Scratch’s annual photographic competition with top tips to ensure your entry stands out… Whatever elements your entry to The Great Scratch Shoot Out features; from hair styling to make-up, photography and of course, the nail style, it’s important to ensure they’re executed brilliantly to make your image stand out and score points. With entries closing next month, here are top tips from industry experts and a checklist of things to consider before clicking the ‘submit’ button…

Hair

Hair expert, Paul Percival of Percy & Reed, reveals key considerations for photo-ready hair looks… “There are three basic options to think about when it comes to creating a hair look for a photo shoot; texture, shape and colour. Once you decide which of these you want to focus on, then apply that to the character the model is portraying for the photo shoot. “A strong texture like the deep waves you can achieve with a waver is brilliant for adding an edge to a longer style.” @paulpercivalhair

“If the nail look is the focus of the image, the make-up on the shoot could either present a natural, glass skin effect or a bold eye to tie in with the theme of the nail.” 36 SCRATCHMAGAZINE.CO.UK

Make-up artist, Robynne Pimblett-King, shares top tips for creating a make-up look to complement nails that are the focus of a photo... “If the nail look is the focus of the image, the make-up on the shoot could either present a natural, glass skin effect or a bold eye to tie in with the theme of the nail. “For those in front of a camera, the skin ideally needs to be flawless and smooth, with a matte or dewy finish. A common daily make-up look is usually foundation, powder, bronzer and simple eye make-up, such as mascara with eyeliner. On a photo shoot, you may wish to to enhance the model’s features by contouring the cheek bones and adding highlights. The eye make-up is dependent on the theme of a shoot, whether it’s bold or natural-looking.” www.royal-aesthetics.co.uk /royal.aestheticstn1 @royalaesthetics__ @royalblush__

INDUSTRYCOMPETITION

Nails

Nickie Rhodes-Hill, session nail tech and Scratch Stars Session Stylist of the Year 2018 & 2019, reveals her top tips for photo-ready nail styling… “If you plan to feature natural nails, then the process for a shoot is different to if you were masking the natural nail with a press-on or full cover tip. As the nails are the focal point of the image, your first job is to perform the best manicure you can. Ensure you carry out meticulous cuticle work using a professional cuticle softener, removing all dead tissue. This might not be completely necessary if you are working with a professional hand model. “If the look involves press-on nails, then a precise manicure is still an important starting point. Size and fit the nails and make sure that each fits properly with no natural nail showing at the sidewalls of the press-on nail. Next, apply nail guards to the natural nail to protect from nail adhesive and provide easy removal at the end of the shoot. “When designing bespoke nails for a photo shoot, create a mood board and have a brief in mind as your main point of reference. When I have gone through this process, I use my ‘Nail Art Design Scratch Pad’ that I designed for this reason, to put my ideas down on paper. The ‘Scratch Pad’ has different nail shape designs and hand poses so it allows me to start creating the look from my research. This then gives me some visual ideas so I can begin my design. After this, I start to apply the designs to press-on nails so that they are ready in time for the photo shoot.” @nickierhodeshill

Perfecting pronouns

H

ow is they?” is a question my good friend asked about my non-binary partner, Keri. Now, I know you’ll be reading that thinking ‘Didn’t Sam think to check the grammar? Was the editor asleep during the edit?’ (Sorry Helena!)

Those words meant everything to me. They meant my friend was trying. She didn’t get it right – in fact the grammar police would have locked her up and thrown away the key, but the effort score was top-notch. If you are open to five minutes of education on the topic of pronouns, and you are someone who is ready to embrace a new concept that will one day become normal, read on…

Pronouns Now I’m sure you may have come across pronouns. Some of you may already be using them, others might see them on email footers and thinking ‘What are they there for, it’s blatantly obvious that Clare is female!’ Pronouns are part of the day-to-day language you use when referring to other people. Typical ones are she/her and he/him.

But it is also worth noting that medical conditions can also affect the tone of someone’s voice, and many cis women (those whose gender identity matches their gender assigned at birth) naturally have deeper voices.

Why should I use them? Using the wrong pronoun (also known as ‘misgendering’) is when you gender someone incorrectly, for example calling a trans woman ‘he’. This is very disrespectful as it makes them feel invalidated, dismissed, deeply uncomfortable and even more dysphoric. So, what can we do? Let’s start with the easiest steps you can make in your business; sharing and asking about pronouns. As someone with a name that could be any gender (Sam), I regularly used to get asked my gender on email by potential clients for waxing services, so I now add my pronouns to my booking system bio and my email signature.

“Gender is a spectrum and with a minimum 1% of the population being trans, They/them pronouns the chances are you Sometimes, but not always, people identify as non-binary might have already met, treated who use ‘they/them’ pronouns. If someone is trans, their voice may Interestingly, the ‘they/them’ pronoun has actually As nail professionals, we constantly meet new people who may identify as cis-gender, non-binary (which can also be known as ‘Enby’) or trans. and historically, Shakespeare used it in his acclaimed work. Let’s face it, the English language is confusing, so learning this might take a bit of practice, but it is our duty to try.

What can you do? If you use a booking system that asks for a client’s gender but only gives the male or female option, what should a non-binary person select? I would highly recommend removing gender completely as to whom the hands and nails are attached shouldn’t matter. Creating a custom box on your online booking system, or over the phone saying, ‘can I ask what pronouns you use please?’ is the easiest thing to start with. Add your pronouns to your email footer, name badges, booking systems, Zoom name, even business cards. Changes like these can all start to make pronouns part of our day-to-day language. Using the correct pronouns means so much to a trans or nonbinary person as it shows that you respect their identity and acknowledge their humanity.

Point to note: ‘Preferred pronouns’ If someone uses multiple pronouns, for example they use ‘she/ them’, then they may have a preferred one, in which case asking for a preferred pronoun makes sense. However, I would suggest asking ‘What pronouns do you use?’ instead. We all have a choice to adapt to evolving language, and only by us making these changes will others feel more validated and understood.

LEVEL Ensure you’re reaping rewards from your gel polish design services with pricing advice, inspo & application tips for all style complexities REBECCA HITCHON REPORTS

A staple on the treatment menus of most nail pros, gel polish has revolutionised the industry, offering a spectrum of design possibilities that can be completed in as little as half an hour. From basic dots to intricate styles, the options are endless, and we’ve spotted a number of nail pros using ‘levels’ to differentiate between design complexity, time and cost. Here, explore three levels of gel polish design to aid clarity for clients and ensure you’re charging your worth…

How to make levels work for you

Rebecca Ellis

Giorgia Capella

Loretta Walker

“When I began offering nail services on a full-time basis, I realised that simply offering ‘nail art’ left the door open to simple or extreme designs with no way to account for time, product use or cost,” comments Rebecca Ellis of Dartford based business, Beauty by Beck. “This is why I decided to offer levels to help manage my time effectively, and by explaining these levels in my Instagram Story highlights with images, my clients know what kind of appointment to book and what they will be charged.” “Gel polish levels should be determined based on time taken to carry out the design,” explains Giorgia Capella, The GelBottle Inc ambassador and educator. “The art under each level is dependent on what the pro can offer, however it’s crucial to remember that some art takes longer than others.” “Sometimes clients do opt for the wrong level when booking – such as a less complex design tier than they desire,” reveals OPI educator, Loretta Walker. “In this situation, I either offer to do the design next time so we can book the correct treatment, or I discuss adapting it to fit into the appointment slot. It’s important to be accommodating but also honest, so that you manage expectations.”

44 SCRATCHMAGAZINE.CO.UK

Managing design expectations “At the time of booking, I check what nail art the client would like to be sure Jennifer Seales that we book the correct appointment time slot. If they come with a request that is too intricate for the time, I suggest ways to simplify the design using key elements or using it as an accent nail, or even recommend that we wait until their next appointment, encouraging them to rebook.” Jennifer Seales, Scratch Stars Gel Polish Stylist of the Year 2022 finalist

TYPICAL LEVEL DESIGNS LEVEL 1: Solid colour/glitter, simple colour blocking, French, dots, line work, accent nail. LEVEL 2: More colours used, complex French, swirls, marble, animal print, abstract. LEVEL 3: Intricate hand-painted nail art requiring planning and various techniques (for example, different design on each finger), character art, embellishments.

Pricing pointers

Amy Rickaby

“How to appropriately price designs is a hot topic amongst nail techs,” Amy Rickaby, The GelBottle Inc ambassador and team leader, tells Scratch. “It’s not just the design to be taken into consideration – it’s also the experience and skillset of the nail pro.”

Nailchemy brand ambassador and educator, Helen Clayton, agrees that there are many aspects to ponder before setting your prices. “You need to consider overheads like rent, electric, heating or possible travel expense, as well as product Helen Clayton costs (even down to how many lint-free wipes you use), your time, any extra time and product it takes if your client wants nail art, and how much profit you want to make,” she says. Giorgia Cappella adds that it’s important to consider other local techs’ work and pricing. “Compare your prices to nail pros of a similar skill range to you. You don’t want to lose out on potential profit but you also don’t want to offer services that are over or underpriced.” “You must know your worth and price yourself accordingly,” advises Paiwa Drew, Scratch Stars finalist for Gel Polish Stylist of the Year 2022. “Set a precedent from the start so your clients know what to expect.” Paiwa Drew

INK London educator, Toni Larkin, recommends having a display board with examples of the designs you offer and how much you charge for them in your salon space to manage clients’ expectations, as well as showing your price list online. “These designs can be altered in colour, but you will be confident in the finished products and how long they take to achieve,” she says.

Boss Your Profits

Maddi Cook, salon and training academy owner and Scratch Stars Services to the Nail Industry finalist 2022, was inspired to create pricing calculator, ‘Boss Your Profits’, after noticing the huge volume of techs asking for pricing advice in industry Facebook groups. Maddi Cook “I realised that so many of us know our crafts inside out but have never been taught how to run successful businesses,” Maddi tells Scratch. “I’ve polled over 12,000 hair and beauty professionals and over 80% of them said they set their prices by copying others or pulling something out of thin air.” Armed with this knowledge, Maddi set out to create a tool that works out exact prices that beauty pros need to charge based on their goals, overheads and ways of working. “Whether you offer three services or 300, my calculator will calculate every individual price perfectly, personally and profitably. For nail art, more intricate designs take longer and often require more products, and the calculator takes this into account,” she explains. To enrol onto the Boss Your Profits programme, where you can benefit from Maddi’s pricing calculator and pay yearly or once for lifetime access, scan here

Managing price expectations through marketing Through effectively marketing your gel polish services, you can help potential clients to understand your offerings and their cost. This is why Rebecca Ellis includes the level of nail art her designs fall under when promoting them online. “I also include the time taken for the design and its price, as it’s important for clients to see what they are likely to spend if they book with me,” she comments. “My mum used to say, ‘if something doesn’t have a price, you probably can’t afford it!’ and that has stuck with me.” Giorgia Cappella agrees, adding: “A lot of clients expect nail art to be included in the price of a treatment, rather than be an extra cost, so techs should make it clear from the offset if a design includes extra costs and what these are.” To also avoid surprises for clients, Hannah Garbett, director of nail supply distribution company, Nailzilla, states that prices ‘start from’ an amount in her marketing. “This way, you will not feel awkward stating that the cost will be more, should the client request anything extra.” Hannah Garbett

1. Apply a base coat and two thin coats of INK iLac shade i-184 La Toni Larkin Floridita, curing for 60 seconds between each coat. Apply a coat of Velvet Matte Top Coat and cure for 60 seconds. Using the INK Pigment Applicator Brush, apply a small amount of INK Additions in Audrey at the tip of the nail and carefully work the brush strokes backwards in small steps, each time smoothing back towards the tip. Once you are happy with the look, apply the INK Rock Light Plus Top Coat to seal the ombré. Cure for 60 seconds. Using iLac in i-182 Cadillac and a dotting tool, place several yellow dots randomly onto the nail. Around each dot, using a slightly bigger dotting tool, place five white dots using iLac in i-156 Retort White. Using the INK Artiste Brush, gently pull the centre of each white dot towards the yellow dot to create a teardrop shape, until you have formed a complete flower. Continue to create the petals around each yellow dot, flash curing between each flower to prevent smudging. Once you have created all your flowers, cure for 60 seconds. Add another dot of iLac in i-182 Cadillac to the centre of each flower and cure. Apply two coats of Rock Light Plus Top Coat and cure for 60 seconds. Remove the inhibition layer. Experiment with different base shades as desired.

Application advice Technique “Immaculate gel polish application comes down to great nail prep and a smooth base,” explains Giorgia Cappella. “The base application, if not flawless, will affect the way gel polish sits on top.” “Product control and thin application are crucial when using gel polish,” adds Jiak King, Scratch Stars finalist for Gel Polish Stylist of the Year 2022. “The first layer Jiak King should not be applied too thick to avoid flooding, while the second layer requires a gentle touch to avoid leaving pressed out brush bristles.” When applying these layers, Georgie Smedley Group educator, Catherine Jimenez, uses as few strokes as possible, to avoid overworking the product and making Catherine Jimenez application harder. Gel Polish Stylist of the Year finalist, Charlotte Edwards, adds that capping the free edge and getting close to the cuticles and sidewalls without Charlotte Edwards touching the skin is key, as is tidying up the skin around the nails before curing.

48 SCRATCHMAGAZINE.CO.UK

Tools “Good tools are vital so make sure your brushes are in good condition – frayed or bent art brushes will only make your job harder,” advises Toni Larkin. But it’s not just your brushes that need to be in tip-top condition. “Using highly pigmented gel polishes will mean that designs look colourful and crisp without you having to build up layers of product, which often makes nails look and feel bumpy,” adds Giorgia Capella. So, which tools are key? “A nail art liner or detailer brush is best for perfecting application around the cuticles and sidewalls, helping you to get closer while painting,” says Jiak King. “A gradient or angled brush is also good to clean around the cuticles,” adds Charlotte Edwards. Time “Nail techs often feel under pressure to create flawless gel polish designs in less than an hour, and Nicola although this may be Hammon-Molloy possible, always allocate enough time that you don’t feel pressure to rush,” says Nicola Hammon-Molloy, sales and marketing director at Izabelle Hammon Ltd. Scratch Stars finalist for Gel Polish Stylist of the Year, Alisha Grimes, agrees. “Quality nails don’t come from rushing,” she says. “Take time to give aftercare advice to clients, too, as this is just as important as what you do in the appointment.”

INK London iLac in i-184 La Floridita £8.33 + VAT www.inknails.com

Sourcing inspo when a client gives free rein “I take inspiration from my clients’ interests, and often try new ways of adapting a design or pattern they love to give Michaela Philips it a new twist,” says Michaela Phillips, Pure Nails Halo VIP. Also take note of the client’s skin tone and what you regularly see them wearing, advises Giorgia Capella, emphasising the importance of using the client as your muse rather than designs you want to practice. “Try and excite them with a style they haven’t had previously, but that also isn’t overwhelming if they haven’t had much art before.”

“I always tag the brands whose products were used in each design when I Alisha Grimes post them on social media,” comments Alisha Grimes. “I also highlight the skill, time and product required to create the design and so why it costs what it does.”

Meet mobile nail tech, QUYNH NGUYEN, who’s swapped her car for an eco-friendly bicycle & is reaping the benefits across London

T

he impact of the beauty industry on the environment is a hot topic of discussion, owing to the sector’s plastic packaging problem and only small-scale sustainability transparency. Yet one nail pro from London is doing her bit to reduce her carbon footprint – by cycling between client appointments.

For gel polish specialist, Quynh Nguyen, protecting the environment is of the utmost importance, and she sees her ecofriendly mode of travel as a way to tackle the climate crisis. “Bicycles produce zero emissions and provide a long list of societal and economic benefits,” she reveals. “I believe they are one of humanity’s greatest hopes for a shift towards a zero-carbon future.” But from whom did she get the idea to get on her bike with her kit bag? “My partner, who loves cycling and the environment, has been cycling to work every day for 20 years. It helps him stay strong and healthy and prevents pollution,” Quynh explains. “He bought me a bike when I started my business. Before I began to cycle, I signed up for free cycling lessons from the council to gain confidence on the road, which I found extremely useful. “There are many advantages to offering an eco-friendly mobile nail service. It’s attractive to clients, cheaper than renting a chair or owning a space, offers health benefits, and helps the environment,” Quynh reveals.

“Insurance, petrol and parking are getting more expensive, and bikes have minimal costs, too.” Expanding on the health benefits, Quynh shares: “Traditionally, the role of a nail pro involves sitting all day. Lower back problems and sciatica are common and cycling can help reduce these risks. Time lost while you are waiting in bad traffic when you have a client waiting can be extremely stressful. Cycling through small, peaceful roads is quicker and you can reap the benefits of fresh air.” And Quynh doesn’t just help the environment; she has been working to inspire youths of the Young Lewisham Project to take a leaf out of her book and start their own nail business – with ecofriendly considerations. A hit with budding nailists and clients, Quynh reveals: “I found that my clients have been highlighting my business in a local Facebook group,” she smiles. “Many say that I have inspired them to get a bike of their own, to cycle to work or to ride with their children.” /tiptotoe.se

THE FORCE

OF THE FEDS SUE DAVIES shines a spotlight on issues of modern slavery & what to do if you spot the signs

MODERN SLAVERY & THE NAIL INDUSTRY

M

odern slavery and its perpetrators bring a dark side to the nail industry and it’s a tough subject for any nail professional to navigate. It’s an elephant in the room and runs parallel to the professional industry, yet it’s operated in plain sight due to the public’s desire for a quick, cheap nail service and authorities that can’t see that this is not the industry norm. So, what is modern slavery and why do we, as professionals, need to be aware of what makes a nail bar a concern? There may be issues behind-the-scenes at your local non-standard or discount nail bar. We absolutely cannot generalise that all non-standard venues deal in human trafficking and slavery – some just operate differently to you and non-standard salons can be owned and managed by any ethnic group or nationality. A nail bar operating as part of a criminal network is not part of the professional industry, and should not be recognised as competition. These criminal nail bars make money by exploiting workers to clients that are blind to their methods.

earning money to send home to their families. Evidence from the National Crime Agency* has found that in some circumstances, these young people are held under coercive control with threats of violence by gangmasters who put them to work in high street nail bars, where they are trained by colleagues who have worked there longer and learned their skills in the same way. BBC documentary, The Prosecutors, showed several prosecutions under the Modern Slavery Act 2015. It unveiled parts of a national network allowing movement of these young victims when necessary to their needs. They live in poor and often overcrowded accommodation, often with a fire risk. There is dedicated training available via Unseen, a UK charity that provides safehouses and supports survivors of trafficking and modern slavery. This training supports first responders who discover these houses of multiple occupancy and go on to report to the appropriate authorities.

SLAVERY STATISTICS

MODERN SLAVERY DEFINED

A statistic bulletin published by the government** on 12 May 2022 revealed there were 3,777 potential victims of modern slavery reported in the UK in the first three months of 2022; an all-time high. Note: this figure is not exclusive to one nationality or nail bar workers.

‘Victims of modern slavery can be any age, gender, nationality and ethnicity. They are tricked or threatened into work and may feel unable to leave or report the crime through fear or intimidation and may not realise they’re a victim.’ The definition varies slightly between the UK’s four nations but is fundamentally similar.

Until this last year, Vietnamese victims have been in the top three in the information supplied by the National Crime Agency*. In the most current data, Vietnamese-claimed nationals are now fourth on the UK list. Less recent data shows that in 2019, a total of 484 Vietnamese-claimed nationals were treated as trafficked, modern slaves; many of whom were found in nail bars that had been reported by public agencies or via the National Referral Mechanism (NRM). The NRM is a framework for identifying victims of human trafficking or modern slavery, which ensures they receive appropriate support.

It’s a broad scope and the industry has bore witness to a number of young people of Vietnamese nationality arriving in the UK through human trafficking networks, under the misconception they will be

Evidence from the National Crime Agency* supports what we know anecdotally; that some high street nail bars are not what they seem. I hasten to add that this is not a generalisation of the

SCRATCHCOLUMNIST Vietnamese nail community, as many work to provide services legitimately and uphold the appropriate qualifications, insurances and business responsibilities. However, the reality for this industry is that there’s an international network of gangmasters targeting young, Vietnamese females, running human trafficking networks and bringing modern slavery to the nail industry. Some other areas supported by these illegal activities are hand car washes, sex work, county lines drug rings and domestic service. Evidence provided by the National Crime Agency* directs to a high number of UK, Albanian, Eritrean and Eastern European victims fulfilling these unfortunate roles. The lists of nationalities affected are long and there appears to be a target group for different types of exploitation. It’s tough talking about the realities, but perhaps it’s time that we looked to what we can do to tighten up the industry and change perception.

WHAT CAN WE DO?

“A nail bar operating as part to link such an innocuous service with such serious The result? They don’t realise that the reason the tech doesn’t speak may not be because they are recognised as diligently working; but because they may not speak competition.” English or have been threatened not to talk to anyone.

• Recognise the signs and not misrepresent the workers or business. • Use the right language and do not make sweeping statements about the, often wrong, ethnicity of salon owners and their workers. There is a common term associated with non-standard salons used widely, which may be construed as a racist comment and should not be tolerated. • Make a stand and provide clients and others with the right information, along with the signs to look for. • If you see the signs – report the business.

Here are some signs to consider; but remember – seeing one of these exclusively may not necessarily mean there is an issue, so be mindful: • Cash only • Walk in service – no bookings • Workers avoiding eye contact, appearing frightened or hesitant to talk to strangers • Signs of physical or psychological abuse, such as untreated injuries, anxiety, agitation or appearing to be withdrawn and neglected • Young SE Asian workers (usually female and usually Vietnamese) • Male dominated management • Poor English/no conversation • Multiple workers working on one client • Poor standards of professional practice • Poor standards of hygiene • Non-standard or diverted products • Working and living at the same address. We occasionally see modern slavery in the nail industry rear its head in the national or regional press, but it rarely gains much traction. For example, in January 2020, The Guardian’s Amelia Gentleman wrote an informative piece*** on the ‘real cost’ of the £10 manicure. She joined a police raid in Peckham, south east London where three people were arrested on human trafficking charges and four frightened young people were taken to a council-run reception centre for assistance. She writes: “It is easier to associate cannabis farms and brothels with exploitation. Operating in plain sight, nail bars seem more improbable fronts for modern slavery; it is very hard

There are, unfortunately, few convictions in relation to nail bar modern slavery and trafficking, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t happening. We, as professionals, can spot the signs more easily than a member of the public. We know when a salon setup is not running professionally. These nail bars are not legitimate businesses; they are not employing professional staff or working to the standards that most of us work to. They are under the radar of many authorities, they have been known to use low quality and fake products, to be involved in product diversion and more. Anecdotally, there is also suggestion of fake certificates or fraudulent use of professional Ofqual certification in licenced areas, which then allow them to operate in plain sight with the blessing of naïve local authority officers. We all hold responsibility, as UK citizens, to notify the authorities if we believe there is human trafficking or modern slavery occurring anywhere. It could be a worker in a nail bar, a domestic slave, or a sexually exploited victim. You won’t be in trouble for reporting a genuine concern; this should not be seen as professional jealousy or business rivalry and with Unseen’s helpline you can report anonymously. How do we do something? There are multiple agencies that can intervene. If you’re concerned about any nail bar worker, then contact your local authority, the National Crime Agency or Unseen. The departments in a local authority that may assist are Trading Standards and Environmental Health and Planning and they have rights of entry under laws relating to health & safety, planning, environmental health and housing. Interventions may relate to the working premises and/or the accommodation provided by the gangmasters. When you’re out on your local high street and if you notice multiple signs of modern slavery, do something about it. Start protecting the victims – they may just need your help. If you suspect modern slavery, report online at www.modernslaveryhelpline.org or call 08000 121 700. You can also call the Police on 101. In an emergency always call 999.

Get to know the names behind companies & brands that are attracting attention across the nail & beauty scene Painted ‘N’ Posted Alongside completing her university dissertation in spring 2020, Molly Bourne created press-on nails, finding the process to be an outlet for her creativity. “I had bought gel polishes, tools and nail tips, but couldn’t find anything to suitably mix the polishes on or hold the pools of colour that I needed for my designs,” Molly explains. “I soon started making nail art palettes – and haven’t stopped making them since!” The talented creative then expanded her handy range, introducing clipboards, soap dispensers, storage boxes and magnetic nail tip stands. “The trays paired with the rests are most popular. They’re ideal for holding manicure tools and are available in a variety of sizes,” she enthuses. “The products are made from resin and are easy to clean, which is useful when preparing for the next client.” Holding a first class degree in marketing, Molly is no stranger to effective branding. “The packaging is inspired by the Painted ‘N’ Posted brand colours; lilac and black. All products are hand-wrapped in lilac tissue paper and black ribbon,” she explains. “The business is small, independent and UK based and all products are made in-house. Packaging products and moulds are sourced from other independent businesses, so supporting us shows support for many! “The aim of Painted ‘N’ Posted is to provide quality products alongside great customer service and an enjoyable shopping experience.” www.paintednposted.com

The Nail Brand Victoria Marie Page created The Nail Brand in March 2022 after seeking a business venture to work harmoniously around her family life. “My daughter has been a victim of bullying and The Nail Brand means I can be at home when I need to be,” Victoria explains. The brand offers an abundance of nail art products; from stickers to chromes and flakes, glitters to angel paper and nail art brushes. “I can grow the brand at my own pace and my daughter loves to help out; mixing glitters and creating the names of some of the products.” Victoria has been immersed in the beauty industry since 2006 and has a particular passion for nail artistry – alongside plenty of sparkle. “I have used so many brands over the years, but I wanted to create my own,” she beams. “I love to mix glitter and create unique shades. The Nail Brand is cruelty free and offers high quality, affordable products.” The brand’s packaging is pink and rose gold to reflect a classy, elegant feel. “The rose gold lids on the pots make the metallic labels stand out,” Victoria continues. “My daughter designed the logo for me, then a designer refined it and made it metallic.” When quizzed on her favourite aspect of owning her own brand, Victoria comments: “I love interacting with customers. Sharing their work and seeing them use the products and enjoy them as much as I do is amazing. I love that I am able to be more present for my daughters, and hope that they will take over the company one day.” www.thenailbranduk.com

CALLIE ILEY chats to three pros who each juggle their nail career alongside another exciting role

NIKKI BOULTON – THE PRODUCT CREATOR Session manicurist, Nikki Boulton, started a second business; creating beautifully shaped wax crayons for children, while the nail industry was under lockdown restrictions. Initially keeping her venture under wraps, ColourMe Lincoln rapidly grew in popularity, and Nikki gained over 5,500 followers on Instagram in her first year of business. The business is focused on creating sustainable resources for education and play to help support the development of a child’s fine motor skills. Products include themed crayons; from custom name sets to farm, weather and woodland animal boxes, alongside stencils, flashcards and counting boards.

“My ColourMe role shares similarities with my nail tech role,” Nikki reveals. “Both require a good eye for colour and plenty of creativity, which I love.” Both professions have also led to exciting magazine opportunities. “I’ve worked on some incredible editorial shoots throughout my nail career, and ColourMe was featured within The Green Parent magazine. It’s humbling that just a few years ago I was seeing my nails in magazines, and now my crayons are featuring in print, too!” Nikki is witnessing greater demand for session nail techs on photo shoots now that Covid-19 restrictions have lifted, and she is managing her time so she can accommodate this work alongside her ColourMe role and appointments for regular nail clients. “While my nail role finishes when my last client walks out of the door, I do often find myself packing ColourMe orders until the early hours of the morning,” she admits. However, the challenges of managing life as a tech and business owner have not affected Nikki’s positive outlook, as she encourages other nail pros to follow their dreams outside of tekking. “It’s important to embrace what you love; a role that drives you, but doesn’t need to take up all of your time, so you can manage other businesses,” she advises. “Don’t be scared to do something completely different to nails, as there can be enough room for both roles. Always be you!” www.colourmelincoln.co.uk @Nikkidrury89 / @colourmelincoln

REBECCA EVANS – THE DENTAL NURSE Gel artist and nail tech, Rebecca Evans, works part-time as a qualified dental nurse alongside running her nail business, Gel Nails By Becca. She began an apprenticeship in dental nursing in 2013, and on qualifying she furthered her studies to include intravenous dental sedation, but she has always professed a passion for nail styling.

Although Rebecca’s two career paths seem worlds apart, she reveals that there are similarities between the two. “Working in a clinical setting is very similar to nails in terms of the importance of keeping the space tidy and organised, and maintaining optimum hygiene levels. My work as a dental nurse has definitely had a positive impact on the way I keep my salon,” Rebecca adds. “The key difference is in the creative side that my nail tech role provides. I studied art and have always been a creative person, full of big ideas.”

“I love making people feel good and getting creative with nail art designs, so I attained a nail qualification and set up a home salon,” she shares. “I wanted to incorporate nails into my life when possible, and my nail role is an outlet for my creative side.’

Noting the surprised reactions of others when they find out about her two professions, Rebecca explains that it makes for an interesting conversation. Currently working as a dental nurse two days a week following the birth of her child, Rebecca has no plans to give up on

LAURA PRIGG – THE RETAIL MANAGER Laura Prigg has spent her working life in the retail industry, progressing from Christmas temp to store manager at Yankee Candle. She began creating custom press-on nails at the end of 2019 under the brand name Basic Witch Nailz. When lockdown hit and all nonessential retail shops were closed, Laura found herself furloughed for most of 2020. This led her to invest more time into her press-on nail business, which quickly gained pace, and train as a nail technician. “I found myself feeling the most inspired and impassioned that I had for a long time,” Laura explains. “It was an easy decision for me to train to become a nail tech, as the freedom to create that comes with being self-employed is amazing. That being said, the financial pressures can be heavy. I’m a mum, so need to not only support myself, but my family. Having another job has allowed me to push forward in my nail career without extra financial worry.” Organisation and flexibility are essential in both of Laura’s roles. “Diary management has become my specialty, as it’s much like creating a schedule for my retail team. In the store, I need to be quick when reacting to a situation and with tekking, I need to be flexible with my clients,” she reveals. “Sometimes one does interfere with the other, but I am always prepared for the unexpected. In both jobs, I meet all kinds of people and hear so many different stories.” Laura explains that she’s always met with support when people discover the two sides to her life. “So many techs start out in a different career and once you find the nail community, you quickly see how supportive it is,” she says. “The reaction I get from customers in the store is great. My nails are always a great conversation starter, and customers are shocked to find out I do them myself,” Laura beams. “I think some people do assume that tekking is just a hobby, but it’s also a great advert for what I do, especially when some of my team members are also clients!” Looking to the future, Laura plans to gradually move towards tekking on a full-time basis. “I’d like to start taking a step back from retail as I feel I’m getting to a place where I’ve accomplished what I have set out to do. Nail styling is a new challenge to conquer. There is fear and excitement in starting from the bottom again, but I can’t wait to start setting and smashing more goals.” Laura stresses the importance of taking a break when needed, telling Scratch that working two jobs can be difficult to maintain. “I am just one person, and I have learned that it’s important to check in with myself and know my boundaries,” she says. “‘No’ is not a bad word and I need to manage expectations. “Take support whenever it is offered and always trust your gut,” Laura smiles. “I have met some of the most incredible people through nails and it’s so exciting to see how many of us are navigating our journeys and achieving our goals.” @basicwitchnailz

either profession. “I’d love to keep building my client list up to a point where I am able to add a few more nail appointments in the week,” she comments. “I really enjoy the variety of both jobs. “My advice to other nail techs wanting to work in another industry is, go for it! I feel that quite often, we are encouraged to choose a path and follow it throughout our entire lives until retirement, but we don’t have to go through life doing just one thing,” she suggests. “If you are motivated, have multiple skills and want to use them, then don’t let them go to waste. We spend so much of our lives at work and we all deserve to feel enjoyment and be proud of what we have achieved.” /gelnailsbybecca

Inner Beauty Growth, an online training platform and community for beauty professionals, was one such company – and can help transform aspects of a business in just 30 minutes. Founded by US college friends, Erica Schlabach and Kate Habegger, Inner Beauty Growth is a result of the pair recognising that their combined skills could benefit pros and safeguard businesses for the future. Erica is a nail tech, educator and owner of professional nail product manufacturer, Erica’s ATA, and Kate Habegger was previously a social worker for a mental health agency. “Erica’s connections with beauty professionals globally and my perspective from working in support roles combine to

Location: Bromsgrove, Worcestershire Nail stylist, Brianna Smith, entered the nail industry in 2018. She turned to self-employment in January 2020 and during the pandemic, dedicated her time to growing her Instagram following. “I created tutorials, hosted live sessions and posted plenty of nail pictures, but while that was fulfilling, I wanted to do something more,” she reveals. “I undertook an education diploma so that I could pass on my knowledge to future nail technicians and in the winter of 2021, I moved to Dubai to teach and offer nail services. While my time there was incredible, I returned to the UK after a few months and rebranded my business and changed location. With a fresh outlook, Paint Salon was born.” Brianna’s nail empire has grown from strength to strength. She has tended to the nails of Love Island’s Liberty Poole and been featured in Cosmopolitan, Elle and Marie Claire. She specialises in gel polish services and teaches accredited courses in gel polish, gel extensions and gel art. “I have goals to expand the space so that nail technicians can create, inspire and network here, too,” she beams. Brianna describes her nail space as ‘traditional with a modern twist’. “The building my salon is situated in is over 300 years old and I have maintained the traditional styling while adding contemporary touches,” she enthuses. “My salon features black wooden beams, wonky ceilings and dainty windows. The panelling, shelves and hanging plants create a pretty visual that my clients adore! It’s a place of comfort, where clients can switch off from the outside world and be present in a moment of indulgence.” paintsalonuk.wixsite.com

Rachel Dobson set up You Beauty in November 2020, taking over a salon previously occupied by another beauty business within a health and wellbeing club. “Although my salon is relatively new, it is the culmination of eight years of hard work in the industry,” she reveals. The team has grown since the salon opened in December 2020, welcoming two other nail stylists, and Rachel plans to employ a therapist to support the expansion of the treatment menu. “You Beauty currently offers a wide range of nail services, from a file and paint to gel overlay, gel extensions and full cover soft gel tips, which are proving extremely popular as clients have more time for nail art,” Rachel reveals. “The salon is an inclusive space and although I didn’t choose the colour scheme of the salon as I inherited it, I have kept it as I love the calm atmosphere it creates; it’s an instantly relaxing environment. The space is predominantly pink and teal with touches of gold and grey throughout, and I have added my own stamp with a Yorkshire theme.” The fact that the business is based within a wellbeing centre is what attracted Rachel to the space. “It’s such a warm and friendly environment, and there is such a sense of community amongst all the businesses within the building.”

Hair & Beauty Talk Hair & Beauty Talk helps hair and beauty professionals to recognise signs of struggle amongst clients. The mental health training has been launched by barber, Tom Chapman. He is founder of The Lions Barber Collective, an international movement that builds on the unique relationship between Tom Chapman barbers and their clients to prevent suicide and save lives. Through the Collective’s BarberTalk initiative, he has given mental health training to thousands of hair professionals, and from this launched Hair & Beauty Talk. The four-hour training, available on demand, helps hair and beauty pros ask questions that give those in need the opportunity to talk in a safe environment. It also gives skills to listen with empathy and without judgement – as well as the information to assist those in need to find the correct help. This training is not to diagnose, advise or prescribe to those suffering, but to offer a safe, non-judgemental environment that is accessible to all. A spokesperson from The Lions Barber Collective comments: “Like hairdressers and barbers, beauty therapists are in a unique position of trust, with a licence to touch. Clients share details of their lives, families and relationships with us. They confide in us. “We are in a fortunate position of regular contact with clients, so can notice key changes in behaviour and appearance that may indicate that someone is struggling with their mental health. The four pillars of our training, ‘Recognise, Ask, Listen and Help’ give beauty therapists the skills to pick up on these changes, ask the right questions, listen well and without judgement, and act if someone should need further help and support.” www.lionsbarbercollective.com /thelionsbarbercollective @thelionsbarbers

MASCED

Devised by skin cancer awareness charity, SKCIN, the Melanoma and Skin Cancer Early Detection (MASCED) programme aims to provide those working within the beauty, hair and therapy sectors with the skills and knowledge to spot skin changes or lesions that could develop into cancer. The specialist skin cancer awareness charity was formed by the family of Karen Clifford (the ‘KC’ in SKCIN) who passed from the illness in 2005. Its online training programme educates on how to spot the early signs and symptoms of both melanoma and non-melanoma skin cancers and how to confidently signpost your clients to take appropriate action. Costing £20, the course also teaches how to prevent skin cancer by adopting sun safety measures so you can educate your clients to take charge of their skin health. The training has been reviewed and is supported by professional dermatologists. It has also been widely recognised by industry bodies. “Since Karen’s passing, the charity has dedicated itself to education and promoting the need for skin surveillance,” comments Marie Tudor, SKCIN CEO. “In 2019, we developed Marie Tudor an online training course, which has been a huge success, and we have now trained over 11,000 learners. Our training includes the topic of subungual melanoma, which will be of particular interest to nail professionals. “With around 90% of all skin cancers preventable and early diagnosis vital, education is key to combating the soaring rates of skin cancer in the UK.” www.skcin.org /Skcincharity

Cyber Security Course Each year, $3.25 billion is generated by cyber crime on social media alone and 160,000 Facebook profiles are hacked every day. Jan Knight of Bournemouth based home salon, Jan’s Hands, has launched a cyber security course to help beauty professionals protect the digital aspects of their business. “So many people think that cyber criminals are just after bank details,” reveals Jan. “They don’t realise that the data about us as an individual is much more valuable. Once they have our data, they can crack open so many more of our accounts, including our business accounts.” Jan Knight

“Many beauty professionals use an online booking system. If it was hacked, the consequences of the data breach would be huge.” The course has three chapters, three hours of content and over 30 lessons, exploring why people commit cyber crimes and how to stay protected against them. The areas covered include social media scams, email, phone and text scams, and the course finishes with some real-world examples and knowledge checks.

“Blossoming Hub is exclusively for passionate hair and beauty professionals who want to learn more about social media and business, to help their business bloom.”

Behind The Mask

Behind The Mask is a free online domestic abuse awareness course consisting of three short videos. The training takes 22 minutes to complete and helps you to spot the signs of domestic abuse in clients, navigate the situation and act appropriately. “We have unique relationships with our clients given the personal nature of our services,” Julie Knight comments founder, Julie Knight. “A client’s time with us may be one of the few opportunities they get to be alone. Their time with us is a chance to notice something that may not be right. That time may be their moment to share something of concern. “Educators can also include Behind The Mask as a module in their training courses so the next generation of colleagues can help to change or save a life. So far, over 250 colleges and academies include it,” Julie continues.

“Many beauty professionals use an online booking system. If it was hacked, the consequences of the data breach would be huge. So would the possibility of losing a social media presence, maybe including many years of work you have uploaded.”

“I recommend that people re-take the course every two years. Those who feel passionate about making a difference can help raise awareness amongst industry colleagues through their networks.”

She offers an online 1:2:1 business coaching service for salon, spa and barbershop owners worldwide. “I believe that salon and spa managers often gain their title through sheer hard work, instinct, experience and hard lessons learned along the way, which makes it an unnecessarily difficult journey,” comments Nergish. “I designed a series of courses to make that journey easier. My courses are action-packed, practical and easy to understand. When implemented, they deliver impressive results for you and your business.” Nergish has written the Promoting Products, People & Services course to avoid three things from happening in a business: 1. Retail products sitting on a shelf, getting dusty and tying up valuable cash. 2. New staff sitting in the staffroom for months waiting to get busy. 3. New services and treatments not getting booked by customers.

The course teaches managers easy techniques to: • Get products and tools sold off the shelves quickly, releasing valuable cash. • Get new staff fully booked in a short period of time, reducing payroll costs. • Get new services and treatments tried and booked by customers as soon as they are launched, in order to see a return on investment. The course can be booked by salons for their teams or their management team only. In person it can be delivered in a day. Virtually, it will be broken up and delivered via Zoom over two consecutive days in two to three hour sessions. www.hairandbeautyexpert.com E: info@hairandbeautyexpert.com

I

Gel polish designs: A reflection love looking back at my old nail art creations – not just to reminisce, but to see how I’ve progressed as a nail artist. I keep both video and photographic evidence of my work to keep a record of my designs and see how far I have come. It can be hard to notice without visual reminders!

When I first began doing nail art, I used only nail polish, nail art pens and stripers. Polish can be tricky to paint with as it starts to dry mid-stroke, so I am forever grateful that my former role at WAH Nails introduced me to gel polish, and eventually to The GelBottle Inc products. Since using gel polish for nail art, my work has improved considerably and I have been able to create more intricate designs that are difficult with nail polish, such as tie-dye and marbelling styles.

Princess Peach designs from 2013, 2015 & 2019

If, after seeing the before and after pictures of my nail art, you feel inspired to recreate some of your old designs, please share them with me on Instagram by tagging @sadiejnails and using the hashtag #SadieJStartedChallenge. Perhaps I’ll see your design and repost it on my stories!

The Great Wave 2017 & 2020

STEP-BY-STEP: Flame nail art For this month’s step-by-step, I thought it would be fitting to recreate a flame design that I first painted on nails in 2017 using nail polish. I love flame nails as they look great in so many colourways. Here’s a new and improved version of my flame nail art on a baby blue base – now created using The GelBottle Inc gel polish.

Flame nail art from 2017

Step 1 Apply TGB’s 2 in 1 Base Coat before two coats of TGB gel polish in Double Denim. Cure between each coat. Step 2 Use a detail brush and TGB gel polish in Daisy to paint a flame shape onto the nail. Cure. Step 3 Paint a thick red outline using a detail brush and TGB gel polish in Holly and cure. Step 4 Follow the outline using TGB gel polish in Tiger and cure. Step 5 Fill in the remaining white space using TGB gel polish in Flashing Lights. Cure. Step 6 Apply Extreme Shine Top Coat to finish the look.

TOP TIPS

3

• Wipe away the inhibition layer between curing each shade to achieve sharper lines and prevent bleeding. • Find a reference image of some flame nails that you like so you can replicate the shapes with greater accuracy. Anouska Ryan (aka @anouskaanastasia on Instagram) is amazing at flame nail designs so take a look at her feed for inspiration.

& the beauty space Want to offer clients a glass of fizz, a cuppa or fancy cocktail at their appointment? CHLOE RANDALL serves up key considerations before you pour & pamper…

Covid-19 guidelines Gov.uk clarified in April 2022 that the ‘Working safely during coronavirus (Covid-19) guidance’ is no longer required to be adhered to, so serving drinks is at your discretion. However, while the virus is active, many nail businesses have introduced disposable cups or encourage clients to bring their own drinks to the premises.

A trip to the nail salon is so much more for a client than a means to a fabulous nail finish. For many, it is a break from a hectic family life, an escape from work or a rare moment of precious time for self-care – so why not give them the ultimate pamper with a beverage to boot? With customer care paramount and competition often rife, offering your client a drink can be the added touch they need to rebook and tell their friends about your business. Whether it’s a cup of tea or a cocktail, consider offering drinks in the salon to make your service even more memorable.

Checklist

According to the NHBF, here are some actions you must take when offering alcohol in the nail space: • Comply with licencing laws. • The law still applies even if the drinks you provide are ‘free’. • Never serve alcohol to under-18s. • Contact your local authority for details about licencing law and fees in your area. • Publicise what’s on offer and make the most of special days throughout the year.

AVOID! According to Premierline Insurance, not having a licence to sell or serve alcohol on your premises is a serious offence. You can be fined up to £1,000 for not producing your licence if you are asked to. You can also be fined, receive a six month prison sentence or both for carrying out ‘licensable activities’ at your premises without the correct licence. 82 SCRATCHMAGAZINE.CO.UK

Case Study: Shian Nails Owner of Shian Nails, Shian Paul, shares the benefits of her salon’s drinks bar… Why did you decide to set up a bar in your salon? “I wanted to create an all-round luxury experience for Shian Nails’ clients, and being able to offer prosecco and cocktails while having a pamper was a point of difference and something the team and I agreed we would enjoy if we were clients. We offer the client a drink when they arrive in the salon and show them our drinks menu, which includes both alcoholic and non-alcoholic options.” How has having a bar helped to attract clients? “Offering alcoholic drinks has helped us to draw in clients, more so those who book an appointment for a special occasion. For example, we have had a lot of hen parties and brides booking wedding nails appointments, as well as people who have finished work on a Friday and want to start the weekend off right with some bubbles and fresh nails.” What would be your advice to any salon owners considering introducing a bar? “Offering alcoholic drink options to your clients is definitely worthwhile if you are trying to create a luxury experience within your salon environment. However, you need to consider the cost of the licence and if your custom covers the cost and leaves you enough profit. “Research and request information from your local authority or consultancy company. I recommend www.easylicences.co.uk, which helped me apply for the right licence and dealt directly with my local authority, making the application process so easy.”

C

arefully conceptualised by six noteable industry names, Famous RELEAF™ is designed to leave your clients’ hands and feet feeling fabulous, with its ‘intentional, effective, efficient and luxurious’ ethos.

THE PRODUCTS:

The creators of RELEAF

The system is the latest launch from Famous Names, the company founded in 2010 by Jim and Linda Nordstrom. The husband and wife duo have spent their entire professional careers immersed in the professional beauty industry; dedicated to educating and producing exceptional products for nail pros. They launched Dadi’Oil back in 2012 followed by the IBX nail strengthening system in 2014, and have continued to add much-loved products to their portfolio since. “The idea for the Famous RELEAF™ range came about in December 2019, shortly before the pandemic hit,” Linda explains. “With travel halted, RELEAF™ became our sole focus for the 18 months that followed. “As a team, we evaluated the mani and pedi systems on the market and what we could offer as a point of difference. We found that many pedicure services and systems had taken a ‘medi pedi’ focus – but a lot of clients don’t seek this at a nail appointment; they seek a luxurious, spa-like experience, and that’s what we’ve created. “We also felt that the market values all natural, sustainable, vegan products that don’t contain parabens or sulfates, so based our formulas on this.” Famous RELEAF™ utilises as many natural ingredients from sustainable sources as possible, is vegan-friendly and makes every effort to use sustainable packaging. “Famous RELEAF™ is a fun and highly effective system,” Linda continues. “It’s wonderful for hands and feet and kind to the environment. You’ll be amazed at the results!” 84 SCRATCHMAGAZINE.CO.UK

sponsored by Scratch magazine, Booksy, Le Chat Nail Products, Not Polish and the trophies by Glossarylive.com

“It was refreshing to be part of a bustling exhibition again. Plenty of booths and visitors kept the energy high, while in the centre of the hall, the competition flowed and ebbed its course as judges scrutinised the nails and scores were tallied. It was such a pleasure to be there, especially since, just one month earlier, the successful Nailympia Germany competition at Beauty Düsseldorf had taken place. “With nail competitions back in full swing, it’s a breath of fresh air for the nail industry to be united once more back in live arenas where the magic happens. I’m so pleased to have been to Düsseldorf and Orlando within one month to experience the joy being felt by those back in the arena. Roll on Nailympia London and Nailympia Mexico later this year!” Head judge once more for the event, Alisha Rimando, highlights: “It’s always an honour to judge for Nailympia Competitions and even more exciting after being away from my nail family for so long. I never thought I’d be confined from the industry and it was not easy to have the routine sharply taken away.

I hadn’t realised how much I’d missed feeling that passion and how inspired I get when seeing new talent emerging. Thank you to all the competitors for showing up and making it happen. I was proud to be part of Nailympia Orlando.”

“We were very excited to have the opportunity to work alongside the Nailympia brand for 2022 and host the nail competition at Premiere Orlando,” comments Ann Donlon, director of programs at Premiere Orlando. “This exciting opportunity was open to nail technicians from the United States and beyond.” 86 SCRATCHMAGAZINE.CO.UK

Step 1 Prep the nails and wipe with Gellux Prep & Wipe. Apply a thin layer of Gellux Fast Bond and allow to dry. Step 2 Apply two thin layers of a light pink gel polish, or build the nail using Gellux Builder Gel in Rose Pink. Cure between each layer for 60 seconds and wipe the inhibition layer with Prep & Wipe. Lightly buff the nails to create a matte surface for design and use a nail brush to remove any dust. Step 3 Apply a bright shade to each of the nails as shown. I have used Glorious & Free, Go With The Flow, Joie De Vivre, Be A-‘Maize’ing and Maple Dreams Come True from the Gellux Free Spirit collection. Cure for 30 seconds.

Step 4 Personalise the nails. Little fingernail: Apply Gellux in Be A-‘Maize’ing and Joie De Vivre, using a dotting tool to create splashes. Ring fingernail: Use a dotting tool with Gellux in Black Onyx to create eyes, and use a fine nail art liner brush for the smile. Middle fingernail: Apply dots of Gellux in Purely White in a circle and drag down to join together to create a daisy shape. Cure, then use a dotting tool to add Be A-‘Maize’ing to the centre of the daisy. Index fingernail: Add random dots using chosen Gellux shades. Thumbnail: Create a heart by placing two dots of Joie De Vivre next to each other, and use a liner brush to drag down and join to a point. Use the dotting tool to create dots either side of the heart. Cure for 60 seconds.
