NHBF report highlights beauty sector skill crisis The National Hair and Beauty Federation (NHBF) reports that qualifications and training, recruitment and retention, and financial pressures have been causing ‘a skills crisis for the hair and beauty industry’. Careers at the cutting edge: Tackling the skills shortage in the hair and beauty sector uncovers a dramatic drop in apprenticeship starts due to lower funding and a growing number of self-employed workers in the industry. If trends continue, the report estimates that there will be fewer than 3,400 hair and beauty apprenticeships starting in the UK by 2025. Financial challenges hold many employers back from apprenticeships because on average, apprentices only begin to generate income for nail and beauty salons after 15 months. However, around 65% of the businesses surveyed by the NHBF would be willing to consider taking on 19+ year-old apprentices if the government introduced incentive funding. The report also found that as workers reassess their work-life balance and the cost of living increases, many professionals are leaving the beauty industry in search of higher paid, more flexible and secure sectors, resulting in over half of all UK hair and beauty businesses reporting unfilled vacancies. www.nhbf.co.uk

Nail NATION Millie Kendall honoured with OBE at Buckingham Palace ceremony Millie Kendall, British Beauty Council CEO and co-founder of Brandstand Communications, received an OBE for services to hair and beauty on 4 May. Kendall, who has over 30 years’ experience creating and marketing beauty brands, was originally awarded an MBE in 2007 for services to the cosmetics industry, and the OBE recognises her continuing passion and commitment to the UK hair, beauty and cosmetic sectors. She attended the ceremony alongside her daughter, Lucia, and was presented with her accolade at Buckingham Palace by HRH the Princess Royal, Anne. “I’m very honoured to receive this award and see it not just as a personal accolade but as recognition for the hair and beauty industry as a whole, and the incredible contribution it makes not just to our economy but the positive impact it has on many peoples’ lives,” comments Millie Kendall, OBE. Since its launch in 2018, the British Beauty Council has represented the voices and needs of the British beauty industry, championing the sector and pushing for positive change within it. CEW to sponsor student placement on Cosmetic Science course CEW UK (Cosmetic Executive Women) has announced its sponsorship of a student place on the Society of Cosmetic Scientists (SCS) Diploma in Cosmetic Science, starting in October 2022. The CEW Caroline Neville Scholarship Caroline Neville 2022 has been launched in recognition of the contributions CEW executive president, Caroline Neville MBE, has made to supporting businesses and individuals across the beauty industry over the past 30 years. CEW is inviting members to nominate someone they know or themselves to be the recipient of the sponsorship, which is not exclusive to CEW members. The diploma is written by experts in the industry, approved by the Royal Society of Chemistry for training purposes and supported by the CTPA. It is a course delivered by online learning, enabling students to study at their own pace, kick-start their career path and improve their career aspirations. The recipient will either be a final year student (at university studying for a degree that is not related to cosmetic science or in the final year of studying Chemistry A-Level), or a CEW member whose current career is not directly in cosmetic science but the nominee wants to get into new product development. Nominations and applications close on 17 June. For more information, visit www.cosmeticlearning.com/diploma and to apply, contact hello@cewuk.co.uk

Survey reveals 28% increase in beauty businesses with a steady footfall The NHBF has published its State of the Industry Survey for the first quarter of 2022. In comparison to the previous survey in January, which showed only 13% of businesses reporting a steady footfall, 41% of businesses now report being busy or steady. Almost half (44%) of those are breaking even, with 30% making a small or good profit (up from 19%), and the amount of businesses making a small or substantial loss is down by 13%. Although there are signs of hope for the industry and the amount of businesses confident of their survival has risen from 40% to 57%, this is not as high as 63% of businesses in September 2021. Only 17% of beauty businesses surveyed are definitely or likely to take on new staff in the next three months, and 16% have cut back on apprentices over the last three months. “After a difficult winter for the sector, trade and confidence levels are similar to where they were in July 2021,” comments NHBF chief executive, Richard Lambert. “We are grateful for all the government support provided to the sector to date. However, continued support Richard Lambert from each national government is needed through the recovery phase, particularly in the form of incentives for apprenticeships to fuel the future talent pipeline of the personal care sector.” www.nhbf.co.uk

Just Be Hue Step into a world of kaleidoscopic colour as REBECCA HITCHON explores the empowering inspirations & joyful shades of the OPI launch celebrated on this month’s cover

O

PI’s summer nail colour collection, Power of Hue, has arrived to send a bold message through nail colour. With a 12-piece palette of mood-boosting shimmer hues, from electrifying fuschia and turquoise to tangy orange and yellow, OPI wants consumers and professionals to use the collection to unleash their creativity and be unapologetically themselves – in other words, ‘Be Hue’.

“At OPI, we feel that colour can help someone be who they want to be, changing not just looks, but outlooks,” comment Suzi Weiss-Fischmann, OPI co-founder & brand ambassador, and Jill Bartoshevich, the brand’s global marketing director. They explain that because June is Pride Month, Power of Hue’s spectrum of shades did take inspiration from the occasion, which celebrates LGBTQ+ communities globally. However, this celebration isn’t something that the brand wants to restrict to one month. Instead, it wants it to be a continued legacy of the collection. 18 SCRATCHMAGAZINE.CO.UK

“We’ve launched this rainbow-hued collection for summer because June is LGBTQ+ Pride Month, but we will continue to promote it until next season because we want to talk about the charity that OPI Global is supporting through it, The Trevor Project, for more than one month. It is an organisation that needs year-round support,” the pair reveal. “The Trevor Project is the world’s largest suicide prevention and mental health organisation for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer and questioning young people. The organisation is doing very important work to offer a safe space for teens and literally save lives.” A percentage of OPI Global sales of the Power of Hue collection is to be donated to The Trevor Project, while OPI UK & Ireland has partnered with and will be donating to Albert Kennedy Trust. This charity supports LGBTQ+ young people aged 16-25 in the UK and Ireland who are facing or experiencing homelessness or living in a hostile environment, and helps them into better futures, from supporting moves into safe homes to employment, education and training.

“The hues and their shimmer finishes lend themselves to really dynamic looks,” explain Suzi and Jill. “On their own, they act as jewellery on nails and together, the shades are perfect for bright, bold nail art. Even a set of skittle nails, with each nail painted a different colour, looks striking with these shades.” The duo’s favourite colour combination from Power of Hue is the two purple shades, Go to Grape Lengths and Don’t Wait. Create., as purple is the accessory colour of the season, they reveal. As far as the most versatile shades, the bright pinks, Exercise Your Brights and Pink Big, and bright blues, Sky True to Yourself and Feel Bluetiful, are their top picks. The Power of Hue shades are available in Nail Lacquer, Infinite Shine and GelColor formulas at www.trade.opiuk.com /OPINailsUK @opinailsuk

“The global crisis that has overwhelmed our lives for the past two years gives way to a colour direction that’s alive with energy,” comments Suzi Weiss-Fischmann. “Invigorating aesthetics, therapeutic textures and vibrating colour combinations are at the heart of summer 2022’s colour story.”

Jill Bartoshevich adds that that there are four key hues dominating nail trends for the summer and characterising the Power of Hue collection: fuchsia, orange, lilac and blue. “Fuchsia has an intensity that’s empowering, so it’s no surprise that Pink Big, a bold, shimmery fuchsia, is the season’s hero shade. Orange is an uplifting, gender-neutral bright, while lilac is a playful, contemporary purple. Blue is cool, refreshing and offers a balm for both body and mind,” she explains.

Pulling the plug on

plastic To mark Plastic Free Beauty Day (17 June), Scratch serves up practical pointers to help you reduce your plastic use in the nail space REBECCA HITCHON REPORTS

Get involved with Plastic Free Beauty Day 2022

Use the hashtag #plasticfreebeautyday on your social media platforms on 17 June and share the changes you can make to reduce the beauty While there is more awareness than ever about the detrimental consequences of plastic use, this isn’t translating into enough industry’s dependence action to reverse the damage done. Damage that has seen only on plastic. The beauty industry has a problem with plastic. Packaging is the leading contributor to plastic production and pollution, and the sector produces over 140 billion units of packaging annually on a global scale.

9% of the world’s plastic recycled since the beginning of large-scale plastic production in 1950 – and even then, plastic can only be recycled a few times before its quality is too poor for use.

Plastic Free Beauty Day was established by Yolanda Cooper, founder of haircare brand We Are Paradoxx, to celebrate and highlight plastic free beauty brands and encourage consumer demand for plastic alternatives. Yolanda Cooper

“The objective of Plastic Free Beauty Day is to make a genuine change across the beauty industry; educating and inspiring brands, retailers and manufacturers to choose alternatives to plastic packaging,” Yolanda tells Scratch. “We cannot continue to rely on a material that is so damaging to our environment. It should be a wake up call to all that plastics are now in our drinking water system.” Yolanda explains that the event has driven positive change since she founded it in 2019. “In our first year, we saw a real switch in how the press perceived the plastic pollution problem. Our second year gave a platform to plastic free beauty brands to share their experiences, which saw a spike in ‘plastic free beauty’ searches. Last year, we encouraged retailers to make ‘plastic free’ a shoppable category on their websites and Look Fantastic was a fantastic partner in this.” And what about Plastic Free Beauty Day 2022? “This year will involve a big drive to wider industry change, and we will be engaging with beauty industry leaders to implement meaningful change from the top down,” says Yolanda.

TAKE NOTE!

Claire Blincoe

“If clients want to use the water machine in my salon, I provide them with glasses, which I wash up at the end of a busy day or between clients. This is better for the environment than single-use plastic bottles and cups, and cheaper than bottled water.” Georgie Smedley Group educator, Claire Blincoe

TECH TALK

Scratch Stars Home Nail Salon of the Year finalist 2022 and Magpie Beauty ambassador, Danny Manchip of Beau’s Beauty Box, Danny Manchip reveals how he reduces his plastic use in the nail space… “It’s a great feeling to know that you are helping the environment, and you’ll be surprised at how easy it is,” says Danny, when asked why he would encourage other salons to opt for plastic alternatives. “You’ll find items you use have plastic in them and you had no idea, and that will make you want to change. “For example, I recently swapped my antibacterial wipes to ones with zero plastic, and bin liners are an easy plastic item to switch – there are so many biodegradable options available. “Before I buy an item in a plastic wrapper, I check whether the wrapper can be recycled,” adds the nail tech. “My nitrile gloves from Unigloves get rinsed off so they can be recycled. The company is working in partnership with Ellie’s Fund, a charity fund for Yorkshire’s Brain Tumour Charity, to recycle these and raise money to research brain tumours.” Find out more here

TECH TALK

Audrey Krako, owner of home based salon, Manikur Brighton, shares her tips for choosing plastic alternatives… “I have been working in the beauty industry for almost five years and I couldn’t help but notice how much plastic waste is created on a daily basis,” Audrey tells Scratch. “When I set up Manikur Brighton last year, I wanted to cut down on this waste and opt for more eco-friendly products, tools, equipment and practices. Sustainable skincare

UpCircle’s Hand & Body Lotion is housed in glass bottles and can be ordered with an aluminium, instead of plastic, cap for repeat orders.

“I have swapped regular nail files for high quality glass nail files, and I’ve switched to biodegradable cotton pads, as many cotton pads contain synthetic, plastic fibres to keep their shape or make them smoother.

Plastic negative beauty

UpCircle is a certified plastic negative brand, which means it removes more plastic from the environment than it uses in its products or packaging. In addition, Evolve Organic Beauty is a UK based plastic negative beauty brand, distributed by Louella Belle. Both brands partner with rePurpose Global, a plastic action platform that helps people and companies calculate, reduce and offset their plastic footprint, removing over 14 million pounds of waste each year. This means that the brands’ products carry this plastic negative footprint, which you can also look out for on other products.

If we all make small changes, they will have a big impact and clients will appreciate it.” www.manikurbrighton.com

What did you enjoy about creating your entry for The Great Scratch Shoot Out? I loved that I had the chance to stretch my creative ‘muscles’ outside the confines of salon appointment timings and with such a talented team, it was a great experience. We bounced ideas off each other and had a lot of fun! What has changed in your career since winning last year’s competition? Since winning, I’ve been made a brand representative for INK London, a brand I’ve used and loved for three years, which is a huge honour. I’ve been busier than ever and I now have a waiting list of over 80 people wanting to book appointments with me. Doing the photo shoot and creating the image really helped my creative mojo, so I’ve had a lot of fun doing some creative nail art on clients in the studio, too. How did you feel when you found out you had won? Honestly, I was in shock! It was the first time I’d done a creative shoot and the first time I’d entered anything, so to win was an amazing feeling. I was with a client when the winners were announced, so we both had a good scream! I couldn’t wait to tell the rest of the team that we’d won. Where have you displayed your winning print & what has the reaction been? My print and trophy are displayed opposite the entrance to my studio, so clients see it when they arrive for their appointment. I also have the front cover of Scratch on which it appeared framed and displayed above my nail desk. The response to both has been amazing, and my clients comment on how beautiful the photo is and how great it looks in the studio, even if they’re unaware that I produced the image.

The prizes

Each entrant receives:

• Certificate of participation • Glossy print of their entry • A free digital subscription to Scratch magazine

1st place: • • • • •

A trophy Cash prize Certificate A special print of their winning image Winner’s feature in Scratch magazine

The Voter’s Choice, 2nd and 3rd place also receive a cash prize, certificate and placement in Scratch’s winner’s feature.

What would be your top advice for people thinking about entering this year’s Shoot Out? Firstly, go for it! Get your creative team and model finalised as soon as possible so that you can start discussing your ideas and vision for the shoot. Take your model’s look into consideration and what colours and styles will complement them. Most importantly, have fun with it!

SERVICING THE CIDESCO, the world standard for beauty & spa therapy, has elevated its offerings for nail enthusiasts – launching three new qualifications with support from industry pros. HELENA BIGGS gets the scoop…

sector

“This growing beauty sector needs more science and product understanding. It also needs a better understanding of inclusivity, diversity and sustainability; not forgetting some essential business acumen.” That’s the belief of CIDESCO, the organisation founded in 1946 that provides beauty and spa therapy education at such a high level that it’s recognised all over the globe.

It has launched three new ‘progressive’ qualifications for nails; Manicure/Pedicure, Natural Nail Services and the Professional Nail Services Diploma. “This is CIDESCO International’s first offering of nail qualifications which is very exciting for us,” comments Erika Ferreira, global head of marketing. “CIDESCO has ensured that the qualifications respond to the industry’s needs and are fit for purpose by working with the Hair and Beauty Industry Authority Erika Ferreira (HABIA), the UK government recognised standard setting body. HABIA develops employer-led National Occupational Standards (NOS) that are then used as the basis of qualifications. These qualifications have been mapped and aligned to the most recent NOS for this specialist area.”

Marian Newman

Kim Ford

Pamela Adkins

Jacqueline Kennedy

Timea Vaczlavik

CIDESCO also pooled the knowledge of Marian Newman BEM; Kim Ford, CIDESCO’s education consultant; Pamela Adkins, board member for education; Jacqueline Kennedy, CIDESCO’s global head of business development and Timea Vaczlavik, global head of education, to formulate the qualifications. They are not only based on the NOS, but have been enhanced to reflect the needs of the global sector and provide skills that will future-proof nail professionals as it evolves.

“The new qualifications not only focus on the ’thinking professional’, but include areas covering science and inclusivity, diversity, and sustainability,” Erika continues. “Every qualification has a level of ‘business’ understanding included. In the Professional Nail Services Diploma, there are three additional units that focus on running a successful business. “These qualifications will ensure that every successful learner is knowledgeable, skilled and ready for employment in a salon or spa.”

EDUCATIONNAVIGATION

The CIDESCO Nail Services Qualifications These qualifications can be taken in succession as a learner grows, or learners can dive straight into the Professional Nail Services Diploma, which ‘includes everything a modern nail professional needs to know’. All nail courses at CIDESCO schools host a maximum of 10 students per group. “Those partaking in the Manicure/ Pedicure or Natural Nail Services qualifications will be a valuable asset to any team,” reveals Erika. “Graduates of the Professional Nail Services Diploma could head straight into a senior team member role or have enough knowledge to suit self-employment and run their own business. Together, the courses match the recognised gold standard of CIDESCO qualifications.”

Scratch on TV:

Go behind-the-scenes with Scratch as the team supports the career moves of a nail tech for TV show, Teen Mum Academy CHLOE RANDALL REPORTS

L

ights…camera…action! Back in August 2021, Scratch was invited to take part in Teen Mum Academy for E4, and now we can finally spill all the details!

The programme, created by Dragonfly Film & TV, follows six determined teens who have already experienced one of the biggest life events there is – becoming a mother. Led by a former teen mum turned successful entrepreneur, Jess Lizama, they embark on an experience to build confidence, relationships and develop new skills. Their time at the Teen Mum Academy aims Jess Lizama to support both their future careers and their personal lives, with help from people in their desired industry.

Filmed over two days, one week apart at Scratch HQ, managing editor, Helena Biggs, was introduced to teen mum, Antonia, whose goal was to build on her career as a nail technician. She sought to grow her social media following to promote her work and develop a loyal clientele. Helena set Antonia the task of producing an Instagram Reel to showcase one of her nail creations. The brief? An animal print nail style with a twist. Antonia had one week to create the Reel and show it to Helena with a caption and hashtags to be approved for publication on Scratch’s Instagram feed, which boasts over 127,000 followers. Antonia & Helena

“Statistically, teenage mothers are less likely to attend school and finish their education due to a lack of resources and support,” reveals Molly Boughen, assistant producer at Dragonfly. “The goal of the programme is Molly Boughen to fight the stigma and stereotypes of what it means to be a teenage mother and promote their drive and determination. “We aim to show the subject of teenage pregnancy with warmth, humour and sensitivity. We wanted to help each of our 38 SCRATCHMAGAZINE.CO.UK

young mothers realise their capabilities in both their business and personal life.”

Antonia also gained some hands-on experience at West London salon, Nuka Nails, under the watchful eyes of nail artist founders, Anouska and Kadimah. Famed for its nail art menu, Antonia exercised her creativity and was offered some valuable business advice to help further her career.

Meet Antonia… “I moved out of my family home at the age of 16 after struggling in my early teens and feeling very misunderstood, which caused me to clash with my family. I am now 19 with a 16 month-old daughter. We live in our own home and we are very happy. “I am a single mum to Alanah-Marie and although the journey hasn’t been easy, I wouldn’t change a thing. I went back to college to gain a beauty therapy qualification alongside my nail qualification so I could offer more to my clients. “I found out about Teen Mum Academy through my family nurse as she believed I’d be a great subject for the show. After she told me about it, I was so excited and she reached out on my behalf. I went through a long process of interviews, emails and Zoom calls and was so happy to be chosen to participate. “The show was created to support young mothers with business aspirations and change the stereotypes associated with being a teen mother. Growing my nail business has been very tricky as balancing time and funds as a single mother isn’t easy. The show felt like a second chance to get things going. “When Scratch gave me my task, I was filled with different emotions; excitement coupled with nerves. I wanted to get it right as it was a big opportunity. I was asked to design some animal print nails with a twist and if they were as good as I hoped, they’d be posted on Scratch’s Instagram feed. The pressure was definitely on. “My time in the Scratch office was so much fun! Meeting with Helena was so refreshing, as she was so genuine and wanted to see me succeed. It’s not every day you meet a stranger that wants to see you shine. Helena made me feel so comfortable and gave me many tips to support my career.”

Filming focus With approximately 40 people involved in making the programme, Antonia and Helena share details about the filming experience… “The filming stage lasted three weeks, and that time was not for the weak! I think I can say that on behalf of the mums, babies and even the production team, we were all very tired – but it was so much fun,” reveals Antonia. “The mothers bonded so well with each other and with the camera crew. We felt like a big family as due to Covid-19 restrictions, we all stayed in the same apartment block. We’d cook for each other, cry with each other and enjoy plenty of laughs. It was an experience I will never forget.” “The filming process was really straightforward and relaxed,” comments Helena. “Team Scratch is no stranger to being in front of the camera or hosting enthusiastic interns, and the arrival of the Teen Mum Academy team was an elevation of that. “Scratch’s ethos is to inspire, inform and educate through its printed and digital platforms, and filming for Teen Mum Academy provided a great opportunity for us to extend this in-person and see real-time results. I am delighted to continue mentoring Antonia; it’s great that the programme has given her a platform, as well as stepping stones and skills, to support her career in nails.”

Antonia’ s placement with Scratch… “We spent a lot of time making sure that we were finding opportunities for Antonia that would help her grow her business,” reveals Molly. “For us, it was a no-brainer to involve Scratch magazine. A big part of Antonia’s time at the Academy was focused on improving her social media platform after learning how beneficial it is to help grow her nail business. “Spending time at Scratch allowed Antonia to see what it takes to work in a journalistic setting. The challenges she was set by managing editor, Helena, taught her to work to a brief with a deadline, while allowing an understanding for the importance of social media.” “It is a privilege to support Antonia’s career journey and watch both her skills and business grow,” adds Helena. “She is such a driven, passionate individual and when filming, we often forgot the cameras were in the room as we got lost in Instagram posts and enjoyed playing with video content.

It’s not every day you meet a stranger that wants to see you shine. Helena made me feel so comfortable and gave me many tips to support my career.”

“So immersed were we on several occasions that we kept chatting even after the production team yelled cut! We discussed our shared love for the nail industry and Antonia asked insightful questions, absorbed every piece of advice given and created a stellar Reel to fit the brief. She was a joy to have in the office and her happiness was truly infectious.”

E

xtreme nails are a unique and bold way for techs to showcase both creativity and skill, whether in a competition setting, for a photo shoot or for personal development and enjoyment. The phrase ‘extreme nails’ has its own meaning to each nail stylist, and the definition varies as much as the nails themselves.

“Extreme nails are extraordinary fingernails, most of which cannot be worn in normal everyday life,” comments Krista Paulitti, international grand master nail educator and extreme style creator. “Due to the outstanding optics, they are often created for fashion or avant-garde photography.

“The high level of difficulty involved in creating extreme nail shapes showcases exceptional nail knowledge and skill. As a result, extreme fingernail creations have also been integrated into national and international nail championships.” “For me, an extreme nail is a showstopper,” adds awardwinning nail artist, Melanie Garlick of Cruelty Free Clawz. “It stops you in your tracks and catches your eye. I always think of extreme nails as lengthy enhancements with 3D elements and lots of embellishments.” Despite the complex and challenging process, the end result of an extreme style is beautiful and rewarding and offers a clear display of structural knowledge. “Creating such nail styles pushes me to grow every time. The possibilities are endless,” comments multi award-winning nail artist and Scratch Stars finalist, Mino Vo. “Personally, after every nail I create, I get a feeling of satisfaction and happiness. I often look at my creations and smile for ages because it’s my passion and it’s what I love doing. I always have new ideas for extreme designs.” There are multiple extreme styles that can be created by techs, whether stilettos and butterfly shapes, or styles conceptualised by the pros themselves such as Kostka Bojana’s Scar, Krista Paulitti’s Xaraya and Mino Vo’s Tokyo. “In early 2006, I designed and patented special nail shapes and forms that were different to anything else I saw in the nail industry,” reveals master educator, Kostka Bojana. “I became known for extreme length nails featuring skulls, handmade details and jewellery. Due to my specific pointed shape and unusual length and style, my nails became recognised globally.” 42 SCRATCHMAGAZINE.CO.UK

Why create extreme nail styles?

“Extreme nail forms allow artists to express themselves through their work. The possibilities are endless, and your imagination means you can create something different to anyone else. You never know which direction you will take, which gives a great end result, led by ideas that can mould into something new. This diversity is what I love the most.” Kostka Bojana, master educator & nail artist “I call my extreme nails ‘avant-garde nails’ because they are futuristic and innovative. They are art and high fashion. Extreme styling pushes the artist to think outside of the box and create something totally new. The nails are not for wearing and are instead for showcasing the nail artist’s creativity.” Mino Vo, multi award-winning nail artist

“Extreme nails push your creativity and help you develop your skills. Often, what you think may work, doesn’t, and through that process, your skills develop as you learn what will work and what is aesthetically pleasing. Extreme nails are also showstoppers that grab attention on social media and help boost your engagement.” Melanie Garlick, award-winning nail artist “Creating extreme nails is a way to show yourself that you can retreat from your comfort zone. They are not for everyone. You have to love structure in order to create an extreme nail.” Andreea Simona Ignat, multi award-winning international nail tech & educator “I create extreme nails to push myself and to see what I can achieve. I love extreme styles because of the time they take and the effort that goes into them. The job satisfaction I get after creating them is amazing! I love the look of striking, long extreme nails. Pushing myself and bettering myself is what inspires me to keep going.” Jade Barber, Scratch Stars finalist 2022 & multi award-winning tech “Crafting extreme nail designs is a chance to test your limits as a nail tech and let your creativity shine through, developing something that’s not only structurally accurate but also pleasing to the eye.” Laura Peat, Lecenté educator

The Nail Lab UK educator and nail stylist, Oksana Smirnova, shares a step-by-step guide to creating this lily themed extreme nail… Oksana Smirnova Nails @nails_oksana.smi

Step 1 Prep the natural nails. Depending on the length of the nail you wish to create, stick some forms together, cut to shape and fit to the nail. Apply a thin layer of white gel on the natural nail. Cure for 10-15 seconds. Using the same white gel, craft the shape on the top and sides of the form and connect to the natural nail overlay. Cure and repeat until you achieve your required coverage and thickness. Cure and remove the inhibition layer. Step 2 File the surface of the enhancement until it is smooth, and file the shape and end of the nail. Next, file from the inside, putting the file inside the nail and filing off the thickness of the side parts. When satisfied, brush off all the dust and wipe the nail with a dehydrator. Step 3 Lay down the nail onto a piece of paper and outline it with a pencil. Move the nail away and draw your desired pattern. When finished, cut it out. Step 4 Fix the finished sketch onto the nail using sticky tape. Draw the cut-out parts from the sketch onto the nail and repeat on both sides of the nail. Remove the paper sketch. Step 5 Taking a drill bit, starting with medium thickness, begin to drill through the larger drawn-out areas of the nail. Next, change the bit to a thinner one to cut out and refine the smaller, narrower parts of the pattern. Repeat this step on the second side of the nail. Step 6 To create the lily petals, paint a leaf completely in white gel polish and cure. Paint a second coat, cure, then remove the inhibition layer and separate the gel petal from the leaf. Repeat this step for each petal. Step 7 Remove all the dust from the nail and start painting it. I used the airbrush technique and bronze paint. After this, I added golden details using a detailer brush. Use the airbrush technique and bronze paint to decorate the middle of the lily leaves. Step 8 To create the stamens for the lily, take form paper and apply spider gel onto the glossy side. It should be applied thick so it does not break. Add a thicker blob at the end and paint yellow. Step 9 When all parts of the flower are ready, connect them using acrygel to complete the lily. Step 10 Adhere the lily to the nail using a gel or acrygel and add rhinestones to complete the look.

TECH TALK: Mino Vo

“My career in the nail industry has been a very unexpected journey,” Mino reflects. “I never thought I would end up doing nails. I’ve always loved fashion, but sometimes your career chooses you, and now I can’t imagine doing anything else but nails.

“Avant-garde nails are my gateway to fashion as I can see them on runways, in music videos and editorial shoots in the future. I take a lot of my inspiration from fashion designers, such as Ryunosuke Okazaki. I get a lot of inspiration from travelling and animals, too. “Being in Mexico and visiting the sun and moon pyramids inspired my next shape that I will teach, named Mexico City. All my shapes are named after cities,” he explains. “One of my most popular shapes, Shanghai, was inspired by the Eastern dragon. “In the past couple of years, I’ve had many invitations to educate, but I never accepted,” Mino reveals. “I’m a perfectionist, and I didn’t want to teach until I knew I had mastered my technique. This year I finally decided it was time, and I’ve been invited to many classes and campuses globally.

“I always say making one nice nail is easy, but making five nails look the same is a challenge,” Mino comments. “You need to pay attention to the small details on each one – this is what makes a nail special.”

Step 1 Prep the nail and adhere a nail form. I have used Krista Paulitti’s Edition 3 form. Mark your desired nail shape onto the form with a pen. Step 2 Build the spine of the enhancement from the free edge to the end of your marking on the form. Step 3 Build the Tokyo shape with your product down to the markings on either side of the form. Step 4 Extend the product down to the natural nail and build from the apex to the end of the spine. Step 5 Connect the needle just under the tip of the nail. Step 6 File the enhancement to create a smooth finish. Step 7 Smooth the sides with a file and define the shape. Step 8 Decorate the nail as desired.

TECH TALK: Krista Paulitti

“I live in a world of inspiration,” Krista divulges. “There is always something exciting to me, even in the mundane – whether a plan flies in the sky, a watchmaker fixes a watch or I lie in a summer flower field with my husband and my Yorkie, I will find inspiration. As a child, my mother had to make my dresses as I had design ideas and didn’t want to be dressed like the other children.

“Being so deeply immersed in the world of nails and my natural talent for art means that my mind bubbles over with illusions and creations. Work is like going to the cinema for me. The creations jump at me like a good film,” she smiles. “In everyday life, there are too many normal daily routines,” Krista continues. “That’s why I turn to this world of extreme nails every day. It’s a form of meditation for me; I forget everything around me and I’m free from negative currents and influences. “I would encourage anyone interested in extreme nail shapes to take a course,” she comments. “It’s important to consider where you can get the best information and techniques. Students need an understanding tutor willing to give their time to support. “Through the many monthly international training courses and experiences I gain, my students benefit, because they are always up-to-date with the latest information from the world of nails. TECH TALK: Kostka Bojana

Kostka Bojana’s extreme nail form, MorningStar

“I have invented and patented 17 extreme nail forms,” Kostka reveals. “Each extreme form is special in its own way and style, and it would be hard to pick a favourite amongst them, but MorningStar and Scar have been popular recently.

“When I first started developing extreme nail forms, it was difficult as there were not many products that could allow me to build such nails. I had to improvise every step of the way. This led me to create products according to my formulation, strong enough to build and file extreme nails, yet flexible enough to allow me to precisely manipulate the product with ease, without fear of the nail breaking,” she explains. “This is why I started my own brand which specialises in products specifically made for extreme nail lengths. “I pass my knowledge to my students as best as I can,” Kostka beams. “This is why the number of students per course with me is limited, so that I can dedicate equal time to each student. My motto is that ‘everyone can and must learn’ and therefore my seminars are very intense, and sometimes we can stay working up to 12 hours a day until each and every nail is as good as it can get. “Technically, after good education and practice, everyone can make a perfect nail,” she comments. “But, it’s the creativity that dictates the originality of the work itself, as well as the artist’s signature, that they are known for. “My top tips for creating extreme nail forms are: have patience, a relaxed mind, positive energy, and good products,” Kostka Bojana shares. “If you don’t have good products, it’s impossible to make an extreme nail form as they always end in 0-degrees – the tip must be like a needle. This isn’t achievable without the proper products because it is the most difficult technical part of the process.”

“I draw inspiration from many different areas such as science, goth culture – such as the skull in my logo and my last name’s meaning – and steampunk. My biggest inspiration is my beloved cat, Scar, without whom, I can’t work,” Kostka smiles. “Besides him, I draw my inspiration from a desire to create something different, to step out of the pattern in order to rise above the limitations which we all carry. “I found myself through creating extreme nail styles, and this is how I express myself as an artist,” she recalls. “To be able to live happily, one must do what one loves. Once you combine work with passion, you achieve the unachievable. This is why I create extreme nail forms.” www.kostkanailsystem.com

TECH TALK: Andreea Simona Ignat

“In my opinion, an extreme nail style is an extension created from sculpting over the fifth line on a nail form,” Andreea explains. “I love all the extreme nail forms, but my favourite shapes have to be the Edge shape and Russian Almond, closely followed by the stiletto.

“I like to sculpt everything that I create. I believe that if you want to showcase your skills, sculpting over tips rules and I enjoy working with both builder gel and acrylic systems. I use multiple brands and I like to try different ones out to see which is better for me. “My first nail training was with Kostka Bojana back in 2017, when I did my first Dragon shape and I fell in love with extreme nails,” she reveals. “After this, I did level 1 and level 2 extreme shapes with Leon Cabriales.

Andreea’s top tips for creating extreme nail styles: 1. Consistency is key 2. It’s all in the training 3. Develop your own personal style 4. Focus on the details 5. Push limits

“I find inspiration from other nail techs, but also from day-to-day life,” she says. “You can always find something that will look good as a nail, like a leaf or a butterfly wing. Everyone can do it, but the most important part of creating an extreme nail is knowing your form application and fitting, and mastering the file when shaping. “When I create an extreme nail, I feel like I’m pushing myself to do something that I’ve never experienced before. The joy of the beauty that you create is amazing, and seeing the result is the best feeling! @andreea_nails

THE FORCE

OF THE FEDS Scratch puts the focus on the FNP board as its figureheads share achievements, responsibilities & goals for the future.

TEAM TALK MARIAN NEWMAN Chair

“I co-founded the FNP as the pandemic demonstrated just how under-represented the nail sector has been. In my role as chair, I talk to people, formulate ideas and represent the FNP at the many tables that discuss the wider issues of the beauty sector.”

Highlights

“It has been wonderful to see the FNP accepted at the highest levels of wider sector discussions as a specific ‘voice’. Hosting our first nail competition in collaboration with Professional Beauty and giving competitions a slightly different focus has been a really interesting and worthwhile journey. “I am proud of our Allergy Survey, which provides figures and information about the ‘epidemic’ of allergies in this industry. I think the total acceptance at government level that the nail sector exists and is very relevant to economic input and strategy for the four nations has been a fantastic achievement.”

Goals

“The FNP will continue striving to make a difference and be a go-to for help and advice for members. Our newly appointed team of Federation advisors will help to make this happen, with specific groups addressing the main issues we face in the industry and finding solutions; endorsing and promoting some of the most important individuals in our industry: the educators! We look forward to developing a strategy to promote our sector to the consumer, regarding what a safe and truly efficient industry looks like.”

“I have been involved in earlier versions of nail organisations so have been aware of the need for The Federation of Nail Professionals for a very long time. Part of my role has involved sharing information from within the FNP that affects our industry, but I have also been working heavily on web site development with Donna to get our membership platform operational. This is a priority so that our members receive desired resources and benefits.”

Growth

“Our three touchstones; Create, Innovate and Educate, are vital to the work we do and our plans to grow and develop the Federation. The FNP is opening doorways for the nail industry to be recognised as a separate part of the beauty sector, and I’ve been involved in updating the National Occupational Standards and advising on committee work with the VTCT regarding qualifications. “My role has seen me take to the competition floor as competition director, as part of the FNP’s collaboration with Professional Beauty. The opportunity to improve skills and standards has been close to my heart and is one of the reasons why I joined the FNP.”

The pandemic showed that there was a wealth of information and knowledge within the sector but it was difficult at times to access. The FNP came along at just the right time, and of course it’s fantastic to work alongside equally passionate individuals, too. “My role as director of education involves a focus on changes in industry education, CPD and development opportunities for our members; in particular educators. The FNP’s member dashboard is the main delivery mechanism for sharing and offering such information.”

Highlights

“I have really enjoyed meeting members and industry experts at UK trade shows and having face-to-face conversations with people I had only met on Zoom meetings. It has been great to discuss issues in person and explore ways to support.”

Achievements

“Creating the FNP’s website has been a monumental task but a true team effort. The complexity of our vision was intricate and it has now been through its final phase of initial build and provides essential admin functions and smoother user capabilities. I look forward to populating the site and using it to its full potential.”

Goals

“I’m excited to push forward with the membership platform we envisioned, delivering everything the FNP planned for its members and more. I am also excited to reveal our Feds advisors later this year, who will bring even more expertise to the FNP and provide member support. The FNP has so much potential, and we’re only just getting started.”

My favourite aspect of the role is meeting so many talented techs who are passionate about our industry and strive to push it forward in a positive way.”

Habia set up a call with Marian Newman and, after we had spoken, she called back to ask if I would like to become an FNP volunteer and assist with administration. From there, we realised that our paths had crossed many years previously and she asked if I would join the FNP board.”

Goals

“My goal is simple – to see our fabulous industry shine! Now that regulation of the aesthetic industry is underway, we need to keep momentum high for the nail sector to affirm it as a reputable and aspirational profession. Our clients don’t know about the correct ratio of liquid to powder, the science behind building the perfect apex, nail anatomy and physiology, how to recognise potentially serious medical conditions or how to avoid damaging people’s nails. Manicure Project Natalie Havariyoun, a former NHS worker with a keen interest in repetitive strain injury (RSI) in the hand, wrist and elbow, has used her expertise to develop La Brush, a nail brush coined as ‘the only wearable brush in the world’. Founded in 2021, Natalie’s company, Manicure Project, boasts two made-to-measure La Brush options; Original and Micro, designed to be worn on the nail pro’s finger of choice, ready for use when needed during the nail service. “Many nail brushes feature a handle, meaning the manicurist needs to drop the tool they are working with to use it, which can be disruptive,” Natalie explains. “The way these brushes are being used may contribute to RSI in the hand, wrist and elbow, or interrupt nail treatments. I was determined to design a brush that would meet every nail professional’s needs.” The lightweight tool can be rotated to an angle to suit the tech, helping reduce the risk of RSI. “Techs may like to wear their brush one way for sweeping dust when using an e-file and another when using a hand file,” Natalie continues. “The hand movements are very different for each, so being able to rotate the brush is important.” La Brush has been designed to be wearable and readily available without any disruption to the treatment; curved with a smooth perimeter, rotatable, adjustable, versatile, eco-conscious and luxurious. What’s more, Natalie is donating 10% of all Manicure Project profits to Antenatal Results & Choices charity. www.manicureproject.com 54 SCRATCHMAGAZINE.CO.UK

NAILSCENE The Nail Heart Louisa Grainger’s love for nails started in childhood and led her to take the plunge and qualify as a nail technician in 2020. With a desire to create an affordable nail brand that nail enthusiasts with any level of experience could benefit from, Louisa founded The Nail Heart. The North Yorkshire based business launched in April 2022 and offers a variety of brushes, tools, decals and stickers. Glitter and confetti are elements that Louisa loves to add to her nail creations, so she wanted to offer a variety of fade resistant, bleed-free colours to the range. “The range of products is designed to provide anyone and everyone with what they need to create mesmerising designs,” comments Louisa. “Spreading positivity within the nail community and getting people to believe in themselves is what inspires me to progress. I wanted to offer a brand that truly cares about its customers and provides great customer service. “My packaging is eco-friendly and has incorporated a rose gold theme with hearts and butterflies,” Louisa continues. “It has taken a while to source biodegradable, recyclable and reusable packaging but being eco-friendly is a priority. I am looking forward to unveiling my upcoming projects and products.” www.thenailheart.co.uk

SCRATCH PADS A pretty pink haven A family’s love & shared passion for beauty are at the heart of a newly established salon making waves in a small Dorset community. REBECCA HITCHON takes a peek inside...

N

estled in the village of West Moors, Pink Velvet Nails & Beauty opened its doors in January, ticking off one of owner, Amy Lashmar’s life goals: to open her own salon and provide nail and beauty services to better the self-esteem and confidence of clients.

Chloe & Amy Lashmar

This dream come true is made even sweeter by the fact that her younger sister, Chloe, is by her side to run the business. “Her passion for nails and beauty aligns with mine, so working together is something we both enjoy,” Amy comments. “It gives clients a special insight into our lives and how we succeed together, and we work incredibly well as a team to provide the best services we can.”

58 SCRATCHMAGAZINE.CO.UK

The salon’s success story While Pink Velvet Nails & Beauty has been open for just five months, the pair’s hard work has been rewarded through not only a busy schedule of clients, but accolades including sixth place for Best New Salon in the UK Hair and Beauty Awards 2022, along with 15th place for Best Nail Salon out of thousands of entries. Amy partly attributes this success to the cleverly thought-out location of the salon, away from competing businesses. “My mum noticed the space for rent and encouraged me to pursue my dream,” she reveals. “I chose West Moors as my target location because it is a beautiful and friendly area in Dorset, the community is so welcoming and after a lot of research, I noticed that there was a gap in the market for a nail and beauty salon in >> the area.”

“The goal was to create an escape for our clients from their everyday worries. We go out of our way to be there for them and make every client feel special.”

“With the support of my family, I have achieved things I never thought I could.” But it’s not just where the salon is situated that has kept clients returning. “We’ve had such amazing feedback from clients about our décor, as they are wowed as soon as they walk in,” says Amy. Inspired by her four-year-old daughter’s favourite colour, the salon’s name gives new clients a preview of what to expect from their visit, with soft pink velvet furnishings matching the blossom that adorns the blush pink walls. These feature alongside marble flooring and gold accessories, which nod to Glitterbels’ HQ salon in Newcastle-under-Lyme – a source of inspiration for the space, and home of the brand that Amy has undertaken much of her training with and largely uses on clients. “Plus, who doesn’t love pink and gold together?” she smiles. While the nail and lash technician sourced her pro chairs from Glitterbels to further match her muse for the décor, the majority of furniture was purchased from IKEA, including the shelving, drawers and desks. “My mum and I chose the furniture, and we loved shopping for the extra touches,” says Amy. “I wanted desks that were both practical and pretty, and also researched desk lights that would achieve the best quality photos. I sought to create a sense of comfort combined with luxury, which is why we chose the pretty pink velvet sofa and chairs, and the dainty pink additions.”

A business bound by family values Establishing the salon continued to be a Lashmar family affair, with Amy and Chloe’s tradesman father building two private beauty rooms at the back of the space with help from Amy’s partner, Laurence. Further privacy is created by the pedicure station situated in the back corner of the main salon room, which also features nail desks with shelving and drawers behind, as well as a reception and client waiting area. “I have been very fortunate and lucky to have my family involved in the design and building process to make my dream and vision come to life, and for this I am so grateful,” Amy gushes. “With the support of my family, I have achieved things I never thought I could. That is why my main focus is to work hard for my family and two children. “The goal, with the décor and our service, was to create an escape for our clients from their everyday worries, where they can have a cup of tea or coffee and let off some steam, and we’ve done that. We go out of our way to be there for them and make every client feel special.” Both Amy and Chloe’s past occupations as carers, and Amy’s work in the police, are likely forces behind why the pair place such a high value on client care. It is also why they accept blue light cards from those working in the emergency services, NHS, social care sector and armed forces, offering 10% off services.

Dreaming of the future What does the future hold for Pink Velvet Nails & Beauty? Amy admits that naturally, she and Chloe are still building up their clientele, and are seeking beauty therapists to help the business expand by offering more services. Currently, 70% of their work is nails, and their most popular treatment is a builder gel mani, with sculpted acrylic enhancements also in demand. “Nails are our passion – we can do them day in, day out and never get tired of them,” Amy enthuses. “Personally, I love the creativity, artistic side, challenges and creating so many different designs. 60 SCRATCHMAGAZINE.CO.UK

“Nails are our passion, and I love the creativity, artistic side, challenges and creating so many different designs.” I also enjoy helping clients achieve great nailcare, quality and longevity, as well as learning new skills and creating new ways to do things.” This devotion to nails and learning is why Amy is currently completing an Award in Education and Training (AET) course to become an educator. And she is set to attain this, as her progression from starting her nail career in 2019 to owning her own salon three years later is testament to that. What’s her secret? “Chloe and I are very positive people and always look at the greatest things we can achieve, rather than worrying about the things we can’t change,” Amy explains. “You don’t fail; you learn!” /PinkVelvetNailsandBeauty

SUSTAINABILITY The BBCo’s Sustainable Beauty Coalition committee members share industry news & guidance to support eco efforts

A journey to plastic-free living

ABOUT MADHURI PRABHAKAR Madhuri Prabhakar is the project leader and campaigner of the Beat The Microbead (BTMB) campaign by the Plastic Soup Foundation. Her involvement with the beauty industry started almost six years ago with the BTMB campaign against microplastics in cosmetics. She believes that we all deserve to take care of ourselves while taking care of our planet.

As part of this campaign, she worked on a tool to help consumers around the world learn about plastic ingredients in their care products: the Beat the Microbead app that scans the ingredients of cosmetics for plastics. This tool allows consumers to discover microplastic-free, certified ‘Zero Plastic Inside’ brands. The app also helps the Foundation to collect ingredient level data of various cosmetic products and brands. This data is crucial for campaigning against plastic ingredients and providing a strong base to put demands forward for a plastic-free beauty industry. In 2020, when the app was launched, Madhuri was voted into the top 25 of the Who’s Who in Natural Beauty list by Natural Products News. Madhuri is immensely proud of the app, and she hopes that it will shake things up in the beauty industry and give consumers the power of choice. www.plasticsoupfoundation.org /plasticsoupfoundationnl @plasticsoupfoundation

W

e have all been confronted with the grim reality of our ‘convenience living’, whether it’s via David Attenborough documentary, Our Planet, and powerful visuals of an ocean full of plastic waste or through witnessing our local rivers, streets and bins overflowing with plastic trash. Plastic did change our lives, initially for the better, but now we are witnessing its ugly side. In the past two decades, plastic pollution has become an undeniable environmental issue, so much so that it is impossible to ignore this ever-growing problem. Every part of our modern lives is touched by plastic in one way or another. The beauty industry is no stranger to the perils of plastic pollution caused by its products. Globally, it produces over 142 billion units of packaging each year, and most of this packaging ends up in landfills. Even if we would like to recycle the plastic from our bathroom, only 14% of plastic makes it to a recycling centre. About 95% of beauty packaging is thrown out after one use, too. It gets worse when we consider the plastic intentionally added to our personal care and beauty products. Around 7kgs of microplastics from our cosmetics are flushed into the environment every minute in Europe. And that’s just the European Chemical Agency’s estimation. In reality, this number might be 25 times bigger. Our recent study shows that almost nine out of 10 products contain plastic

ingredients. We investigated the 10 most popular brands of the four major European cosmetic producers. Microplastic pollution is irreversible and impossible to clean up which makes this even more urgent. When I started my journey at the Plastic Soup Foundation, facts and figures like these shook my perception of the beautifully packaged cosmetics that were sitting on my bathroom shelf. I had to say goodbye to some of my favourite products. The fact that plastic is not only found in our fruits and veggies but also in our lungs and blood is rather unnerving. A colleague once said to me ‘We live, hence, we are unsustainable.’ This thought stuck with me. Every choice we make has an impact, positive or otherwise, however knowledge is power. Knowing these cruel consequences of our choices can motivate us to not ignore it anymore. Indifference is not an option if we are to tackle plastic pollution or climate change. The first step towards making that switch is to be confronted by our impact and then try to do everything we can to make a difference with our choices. Every small step we can take to reduce our plastic footprint has an enormous impact. If we all choose to use products that do not use plastic ingredients, tens if not thousands of tonnes of plastics wouldn’t end up in our environment. At the Plastic Soup Foundation, we believe that the responsibility of addressing plastic pollution doesn’t only rely on just consumers or industries or governments or non-profits. We all have a role to play, and we need to work together to solve this as a society. All of us feel confronted, frustrated and often hopeless. Only positive action can change the horrid course we are on, if we work together.

SCRATCHCOLUMNIST

“Every small step we can take to reduce our plastic footprint has an enormous impact.” So, as the Plastic Soup Foundation, we plea: To consumers: Make your voice heard, demand transparency and hold your favourite brands accountable. We, as consumers, hold the key to immense change. Matt Kuhlman, co-founder of haircare brand, PureZero said: “Consumers need to understand that sustainability transparency from brands will not happen on a wide scale unless they force the hand of big brands through their purchasing decisions.” To brands & businesses: There is a clear need for more sincere actions to tackle the plastic pollution arising not only from packaging but also, from inside products. Don’t shy away from making it visible to your consumers that you strive for positive change, not just with words but with actions. It’s a challenging issue so be transparent about your efforts. A small step in the right direction is better than hollow promises. Feel the urgency and make planet positive decisions when it comes to your business.

To governments & policy makers: There is now enough evidence to recognise plastic pollution as the 10th planetary boundary. If such boundaries are passed, ecological restoration is no longer possible. Recognise the scientific evidence on the adverse effects of microplastics on the environment and human health. Immediate steps are justified to prevent more microplastic leakage. Anne-Marie Bonneau, @zerowastechef, put it perfectly when she said: “We don’t need a handful of people doing zero waste perfectly. We need millions of people doing it imperfectly.” Getting rid of unnecessary plastics from our lives and business isn’t as easy as our reliance on it. To have impact on a large scale, all of us must be a small part of it. Plastic-free living is a journey not a destination.

Do you want to know if your care products contain microplastics? Download the free Beat the Microbead app to scan the ingredients of your beauty and care products for microplastics

The power OF SCENT

Does your client seek relaxation or invigoration? Cater to their needs & elevate your nail & beauty services by incorporating aromatherapy CHLOE RANDALL REPORTS As a nail professional, you already engage with your client’s senses through touch, sight and sound – but why not engage their sense of smell too, for the ultimate pamper session? Aromatherapy Awareness Week reminds us of the power of essential oils and how incorporating aromatherapy into your hand and foot treatments can have a meaningful impact on your client’s mood. According to Healthline, essential oils are compounds extracted from plants, which each have different qualities and scents to support health and wellbeing. The unique aromatic compounds give each essential oil its characteristic essence. Obtained through distillation, once the aromatic chemicals have been extracted, they are combined with a carrier oil to create a product that’s ready for use. Inhaling the aromas from essential oils can stimulate areas of your limbic system; a part of your brain that plays a role in emotions, behaviours, sense of smell and long-term memory. Adding aromatherapy into your hand and foot services can truly elevate your offerings. Consider stocking scented retail items and fill your salon with the desired scent to attract or soothe your clients, leaving them with a great mood – as well as a great manicure.

SCENT NOTES

By Matt Taylor, brand & education manager at Eve Taylor London www.eve-taylor.com /EveTaylorLondon @evetaylorlondon

What are the benefits of aromatherapy in beauty services? The versatile nature of aromatherapy means it has numerous benefits and can be used across all kinds of treatments, including beauty services. The practical use of essential oils boosts the skin in a multitude of ways and gives noticeable improvements within facial treatments. Whether the skin experiences oiliness, congestion and breakout activity, or sensitivity, irritation and redness, there are expertly blended essential oil synergies to improve the complexion. The aromatic benefits of aromatherapy can also improve feelings of wellbeing with its effects on the senses, helping to improve the mood and mindset, soothing and comforting feelings of negativity. Not only will clients look good, but they will feel good from the inside. How can aromatherapy be incorporated into a hand, foot or nail treatment? Use pre-blended aromatherapy massage oil for a hand and arm massage within manicures or foot and lower leg massage within pedicures. For those who want to offer a more luxurious treatment, an aromatherapy massage candle can be introduced, nurturing and moisturising the skin with rich warm plant wax and inspiring the senses with essential oils. How can aromatherapy be tailored depending on the client’s needs? Conducting an initial consultation will allow the therapist or nail technician to determine the client’s needs and select an appropriate aromatherapy product. With various pre-blended options available, a selection can be chosen and purchased to treat the main concerns clients visit with, so they are to hand as they are needed. What benefits can aromatherapy have on nailcare? Aromatherapy offers excellent benefits for nailcare within manicures and pedicures. Lavender, for example, is known for its therapeutic benefits; hydrating the cuticles with its moisturising and soothing properties. Tea tree essential oil offers anti-bacterial and anti-fungal actions. Eve Taylor London Hand & Nail Rescue Cream SPF20 £5.75 + VAT/RRP £13.60 www.eve-taylor.com

TECH TALK

Nail tech, Natalia Haycock, reveals how she incorporates aromatherapy into her services… @nataliaevangeline_hb

“I love to use aromatherapy during my nail treatments to add a luxury element. Adding another one of the senses, sense of smell, to the service gives my clients a really relaxing vibe in the treatment room, alongside my crystals and crystal healing therapy,” reveals Natalia. “I use aromatherapy oils in a diffuser for the duration of the service. Not only does it make my client feel pampered and relaxed, it also makes me feel calm throughout the treatment. “I also add aromatherapy oils to warm water to soak my client’s hands during what I advertise as the ‘Ruby Package’. This involves a relaxing hand soak with an additive of aromatherapy oils, followed by an exfoliating hand scrub finished with a relaxing hand massage. Clients love this as they are able to pick their own oil depending on their mood and what they’d like to gain out of the treatment.”

TECHTALK

MINUTES WITH…

Nicolette Manesh

The nail stylist & Magpie Beauty educator shares an insight into her working life & top tekking tools

How did you get into nails? My interest in nails began unexpectedly when I was 15 years old. I was seeking work experience at a hair salon but so were many other pupils, so my career advisor suggested I contact a nail salon. After two weeks, the salon manager offered me a Saturday job with in-house training and I’ve been working in nails ever since. This year marks 14 years in the industry.

My kitbag essentials When purchasing a product, I look for something that can help improve my application or speed. Good quality items are worth investing in and I always assess how they will benefit me, as well as my clients. I use Magpie Beauty’s Duchess cuticle tool for every nail service and always have the Magpie Beauty Get A Grip Rubber Base in Peach to hand. Good lighting is essential wherever I work and so I turn to The Daylight Company, which offers lighting solutions designed for nail techs.

Tell us about an average working week… I work at my home-based salon, Nicolettes Nails in Waterlooville, Portsmouth, around two days a week alongside educating for the Magpie Beauty brand. On salon days, I usually start my day around 9am and try to fit in six to eight clients. When teaching, my hours vary depending on the class. Some take place at a hotel near my home, and others are online in the evenings or at weekends.

Slimline 3 Table Lamp £139.99 inc VAT www.daylightcompany.com

My nails I usually wear my nails in an almond shape at a medium length. Colour-wise, I either choose a coral hue, or more regularly a nude with the Mapgie Build Me Up Builder Gel in Buff so I can experiment with nail art on top.

5 FUN FACTS

1. My career highlight is becoming an educator for Magpie Beauty. 2. I have recently started paddle boarding and living near the coast is ideal for this. 3. I love hydrangeas and they featured heavily at my wedding. 4. My husband and I co-own a caravan and love travelling to various locations. 5. I used to work as a mobile nail tech before I opened my home salon.

TOP TIPS

The Daylight Company’s Slimline Lamp sits on my nail desk at my home salon and is ideal for helping me to perfect my cuticle work and product application.

I use the Foldi Go in the salon, as it’s cordless and perfect if I need to move around or do pedicures. It also comes with me when I work on photo shoots and at events as good lighting is never guaranteed at Foldi Go £89.99 inc VAT such locations, www.daylightcompany.com so it ensures I can see exactly what needs to be done. I use the Aura Ring Lamp while filming nail videos and tutorials as it features a handy removable phone holder. It’s also lightweight and can be folded and packed into its carry bag for fuss-free transportation.

To take a great nail photo, find an area that has lighting from a variety of angles. This will prevent shadows and provide a strong focus on the nails. Also, make sure the background of your photo isn’t too cluttered and wipe cuticle oil away from Aura Ring Lamp £199.99 inc VAT the skin so there is no oily www.daylightcompany.com reflection in the finished photo.

Bridal clients & wedding nail styles

reparation and communication is key when it comes to wedding nail styles, and it’s so important that your bridal client has the right expectation of what you can offer. A trial run or detailed consultation prior to the appointment is essential so you can price appropriately, attain everything you need for the design and put aside enough time so that the client is satisfied with the end result.

Inst

It’s likely that all of us have experienced a client arriving with a design idea or nail photo from the internet and expecting the same look. It may be unachievable for a number of reasons; time, their nail type or lifestyle, or your skillset. If you have only put aside 90 minutes for an appointment and they arrive with a complex design, this can cause stress and leave the client – and you – feeling disappointed.

When a client shows interest in bridal nail styles, I work on a plan before their appointment. Their hands will be a big focus on the wedding day and the photographer will be capturing moments such as the placing of the rings throughout the day, so your nail style needs to be picture perfect and ready for a close up. This adds pressure, so a care programme in the run up to the final appointment before the event is imperative.

I would advise retailing a good quality hand cream and cuticle oil and encouraging the client to wear rubber gloves when washing up or cleaning. This process needs to start at least 12 weeks before the wedding day to ensure that the hands and nails are looking their best.

Let’s not forget that the wedding is not just about the bride, so embrace the opportunity to offer treatments to other members of the wedding party. This extends to the bride’s mother, bridesmaids and the groom and his party. Keeping up-to-date with new nail trends has and always will be so important, however wedding nails tend to be an exception. A classic French or ombré are popular amongst many brides, often with the addition of a crystal or flat 3D roses. This is not exclusive to all brides and you may find yourself colour matching the bridesmaids’ dresses, flowers or colour theme. This is why a trial is essential to make sure the bride and groom have no extra stress if you can’t find the perfect match in your colour collection. Although every bride is approaching one of the happiest days of their lives, you must be conscious that it is also a very stressful time. Be kind, considerate and appreciate that they want the big day to run as smoothly as possible. As many weddings have been postponed over the last two years, some clients may seem fussy or demanding but they may simply be trying to coordinate their perfect day – so feel honoured that they have chosen you to be a part of it. Try to make the experience as wonderful as possible because their appointment could be the last opportunity they have to relax before the big day. They’ll remember the care you give them – and the power of word of mouth recommendations cannot be forgotten.

Kate Meera quit her full-time job in a call centre in 2016 and entered the nail industry with a dream to open her own salon. “At the start of my journey, I was self-employed with only a few friends and family as clients. However, hard work and a love for the industry helped me to find my feet and I moved from salon to salon for five years, making some great friends along the way. On 26 October 2021, I opened my own salon, Base Beauty. If I stick to my five-year plan, by 2024 I will be opening a second salon with an academy.” Base Beauty is on a Victorian street, surrounded by beautiful buildings. “I wanted to work with the building and complement its history by creating a space that is unexpected of beauty salons,” Kate explains. I opted for a different take on common design trends, choosing pastel colour clashes, in line with my ‘out there’ nail styles. I often joke that the décor is like the inside of my brain!” The salon has three additional staff members and the team offers gel polish manicures and pedicures, gel and acrylic extensions, brows, lash extensions and aesthetic services. “The salon is like our second home, and we hope our clients feel the same way,” says Kate. “Welcome to my little slice of nail heaven!” @base_beautysalon_

During her maternity leave at the start of the pandemic, Sophie Raymond realised that life was too short to continue in a career she was unhappy in. “I’ve always been a creative individual with a penchant for all things beauty, and love nothing more than making others feel good about themselves. Due to this, a career in the beauty industry just made sense. “Starting a new career in a troubling time was terrifying and very challenging,” Sophie admits. “I persevered, even when it didn’t feel I was getting anywhere. I initially started out offering just lash extensions but in June 2021, my fiancé surprised me with a Glitterbels gel polish and manicure course, and my love for nails ignited. Through word of mouth I have amassed a wonderful clientele and I am just as excited about catching up with my clients as I am pampering them.” Sophie has incorporated panelling, ornate mirrors and a vintage French glass cabinet to her space to showcase her love of Rococo décor. “I’ve tried to create a girly yet chic haven with luxurious white and gold accents,” she reveals. “I wanted to create a space that my clients would get excited about visiting – a Pinterest-worthy space that still feels friendly and relaxing.”

A big Glitterbels fan, Sophie resonates with the style of brand founder, Annabel Maginnis. “The brand is pink, gold and girly which is a major perk. It’s also the most important piece, as it’s where the magic happens.” @_ahintofbeauty

Experts ASK THE

Scratch pitches your pressing questions to those in-the-know…

Q: “Why are my gel enhancements peeling and lifting and what can I do to prevent it?” ANTHEA EDWARDS Owner, Nails by Anthea

/NailsByAnthea @nailsbyanthea

“One of the main causes of gel lifting in my experience is poor aftercare. It’s imperative for nail pros to educate their clients that nails are not tools. I cringe when I see people using their nails to remove staples, drawing pins, open drinks cans, pick the end of a reel of tape and remove stickers. The daily use of cuticle oil is also very important as it helps to keep the nail hydrated, which stops it from curling and separating from the overlay.

“I once had a client who came to me every three weeks, and each time I soaked off her enhancements and redid them. She changed her job, and her gel enhancements began peeling after two weeks. We discussed what could be causing it and eventually found the reason. Her new job didn’t have a basin in the staff bathroom, so team members had to use the skin in the kitchen, and washing up liquid was being used as hand wash. She took her own hand wash to work with her and saw no further problems.”

JULIE-ANNE LARIVIÈRE Salon System Gellux expert & “Improper preparation of the nail owner of Sketched by J-A Nails plate prior to application is a big reason why enhancement systems can peel. Ensure the nail plate is well prepared before application by pushing back the cuticle and removing all the dead skin that is stuck to the nails. Gel does not adhere to skin and will lift and peel if there is any left on the nail plate. /JANailsAtShq @jal.nailartist

“I love to scrub the nails clean with Salon System Nail+File Sanitising Spray following prep. It’s great at removing all the natural nail oil and dust prior to applying gel polish. I recommend clients use their cuticle oil at least twice daily to prevent nail dehydration, too. “It’s also vital to use the lamp designed for the system you are using. Not all brands cure at the same wattage, which can cause the gel to not be fully cured, even if it does appear fine when out of the lamp. Uncured gel can cause allergies in the long run, alongside affecting the longevity of the service, so a proper cure is crucial. “I do not advise mixing brands unless they are compatible. Brands carefully test their products to make sure they work together. Things can go wrong and allergies can occur if they are not compatible.”

BUSINESSMATTERS CHARLOTTE EDWARDS Scratch Stars Gel Polish Stylist of the Year finalist 2022 & owner of Nails & Beauty by Charlotte Edwards

“To help prevent gel peeling, it is important to check your client’s medical history and keep up-to-date record cards so you can ensure that there are no issues that will impact the longevity of a nail enhancement.

“On two occasions when I have experienced gel peeling on clients, I reviewed my prep and gel polish application. Realising these weren’t the issue, I discussed any new medical conditions or medications /nailsbycharlotteedwards the client may have been taking. @nailsbycharl.eds One lady had been diagnosed with an under active thyroid, and you could visibly see the gel polish shrink back from the cuticles. For this lady, I had to flash cure each nail for 10 seconds before fully curing to prevent the gel from peeling. The other lady was diagnosed with psoriatic arthritis. When she has a flare up, her nails become quite flaky. I had to adapt the treatment for this lady by offering IBX, and applying a layer of CND™ Plexigel Shaper to the nail before the gel polish.”

My top tips for achieving the perfect gel polish application:

1

Keep product coats thin “Even if you feel the colour is a little transparent, keep to using thin coats. Don’t be tempted to apply it thicker.”

2 3

Cap the free edge “Cap the free edge first to ‘seal’ the product.”

Prep “Spend time perfecting your prep work. This is the foundation for a successful enhancement, so it needs to be flawless.”

4

BARBARA WESOLOWSKA Scratch Stars Gel Tech of the Year finalist 2022 & founder of The Nail Studio by Barbara M. Wesolowska

“I treat the nail plate like a blank page. If it’s smooth and clean, then application will also be the same. If the blank page gets dirty, dusty or oily, the product will start /DeeSt.Aberdeen peeling. I always tell my clients @nailstudio.aberdeen to keep their hands on the table throughout their appointment, so they don’t touch their face, hair or clothes.”

What should you check if your enhancement is peeling?

1

Prep “Any residual cuticle, old product, air pockets or inaccurate cleansing of the nail plate means that there will be a barrier between product application, causing peeling or lifting.”

2

Product choice “The consultation is vital to determine the health of the client’s nail plate and lifestyle, to see what product system works best for them. Some clients may not be suited to gel enhancements based on such assessments.”

3

Improper cure “Always use the lamp manufactured to work with your chosen system to ensure a proper cure. Also pay attention to whether your clients hold their hands correctly in the lamp – some clients may need to cure their thumbs separately.”

Apply up to the cuticle “The brushes in your gel polish bottle will fan out nicely and the curve should butt up nicely to the cuticle, if you place the gel down in the centre of the nail and push the brush back to the cuticle to get nice and close. However, if you struggle to get close to the cuticle, use a detailer brush to get flush.”

4

5

5

Careful application “Do not flood the cuticle or get product on the skin, as it looks unsightly and will cause the gel to peel and lift.”

“I struggled with gel peeling at the start of my nail journey and I was losing clients and faith in my skills. While product peeling can be attributed to certain products not being suitable for the client, it can also come down to prep.

Application Avoid overexposure. “Products should not be coming into contact with the skin.” Aftercare “Clients often forget that nails are not tools but appendages that require attention and daily care.”

“I treat the nail plate like a blank page. If it’s smooth and clean, then application will also be the same. If the blank page gets dirty, dusty or oily, the product will start peeling.” SCRATCHMAGAZINE.CO.UK 85

How to perfect character nail art

I

love challenging myself to paint cartoon characters and find that each one tests my skills in a different way. There are so many things to consider when painting characters that can really make a huge impact on the quality of your finished artwork. The placement, scale, colours, and line work all matter and a lot of patience and meticulous attention to detail is essential.

STEP-BY-STEP: SpongeBob Character Nail Art

1. Using the TGB Detail Brush, paint a rough outline of your character on a white or light-coloured base, such as TGB Gel Polish in Daisy. Cure. 2. Choose shades that match your reference image and place them onto the TGB Nail Art Palette. Mix custom shades if you don’t have exact matches in your collection. Start filling in the outline with the appropriate shades using the TGB Detail Brush and cure. 3. Neaten and refine your outline and paint small details such as highlight in the eyes. Cure. 4. Carefully paint the background around the character in your chosen shade. Cure. 5. Add details inspired by your chosen cartoon to the background if space. 6. Cure, then complete the design with a coat of the TGB Extreme Shine Top Coat to make the colours pop. Cure to finish.

When creating intricate nail art designs, such as hand-painted cartoon characters, it’s always helpful to have a large canvas on which to work. TheGelBottle Inc offers the DesignEx Pro™ extension system, available in a range of different lengths and shapes. I would suggest choosing the long coffin or long stiletto tips to allow more nail space for your design.

Once you’ve practiced and become more comfortable with the process of character art, you’ll feel more confident about scaling down your art onto smaller or shorter nails. Another great thing about DesignEx Pro™ is that the extensions are quick to apply, so can drastically cut down your appointment time. As we all know, time is money!

There are many ways that you can create character nail art, but here I reveal my method. I hope this breakdown is helpful!

1

A few of my favourite nail artists that paint incredibly detailed character art include Maddox‘ (@ballpit_addict), Skye (@hallowedbethynails), Annie (@tengoku_nails), and Reuby (@reuby_nails). I love that they each have their own individual art style that makes their work instantly recognisable. As a nail artist, it’s so important to have a consistent art style to really establish your brand identity and stand out in the industry.

How do you turn a one-off client into a regular? REBECCA HITCHON gathers top tips from techs that have successfully crafted loyal clients

One-time to

long-term Picture this: a client is sitting at your nail desk for the first time. You’ve got them into your nail space – and that’s the hard work done, right? Not necessarily; there’s another hurdle to jump. How do you keep them returning to your business after the appointment? Techs share four key ways to turn a new client into one of your most dependable customers...

1. Encourage another booking “A simple but effective way to keep your clients rebooking is to do the work for them,’ explains INK London educator, Jessica Hinds. “At the end of the service when the client is admiring their beautiful new nails but before they pay, book them in for their next set. Most of the time, they will commit while Jessica Hinds they are really happy with the service and don’t have other distractions.” Jessica adds that this ensures that clients get into the habit of being organised with their appointments, keeping your books full. Another way to keep business booming is to give clients a regular appointment time – a strategy that Pure Nails Halo VIP, Jade Miller, uses. “This works well, especially if a client Jade Miller has a consistent work rota so is available at the same time on the same day every three to four weeks, and makes them feel privileged,” she says.

88 SCRATCHMAGAZINE.CO.UK

Liverpool based tech, Ashton Toner, who works under the business name Polish Them Off, advises talking about future designs the client could get next time they visit to make them more likely to rebook. “Perhaps they have a special occasion coming up and you Ashton Toner could design their nails to match their outfit, so let them know about your skills,” she suggests. Adding urgency is another efficient way to entice clients to rebook, says Georgie Smedley Group ambassador, Diana Pajeva. “You could mention that your diary is getting busy so you can’t guarantee that you’ll be able to fit them in last minute. Maybe even mention that other clients have started adding another Diana Pajeva treatment, such as a pedicure, to their service. It’s a psychological tool as people don’t like to feel left out.” However, Ashton stresses that if a client is unsure about rebooking, no pressure should be put on them. “Instead, keep in touch after the appointment to see how their nails have fared and give aftercare advice, as first-time clients will appreciate that, and perhaps they will then feel comfortable to rebook,” she says.

BUSINESSMATTERS

2. Stand out from the competition

3. Offer deals & loyalty schemes

“Do some market research on nail businesses in your area so you can determine your niche and create a feeling of exclusivity,” reveals Diana Pajeva. “You might be great at nail art or offer a complimentary hand massage, for example. But if you feel you need to work on your skills to get better at certain treatments, do so.”

There are mixed views on how beneficial deals and loyalty schemes are for beauty businesses, due to concerns about a loss of profit and attracting clientele who are only coming to your nail desk for discounted prices. However, for new businesses, as well as techs adding services to their treatment menu, these methods can make a huge impact.

“Providing exceptional customer service, treating each and every client as if they are your only one, and using high quality products will help your business to shine,” adds Georgie Smedley Group educator, Claire Blincoe. “I always chat about the development of my chosen brand, Gelish, so Claire Blincoe clients know I’m well educated and care about the long-term health of their nails.”

Natasha Fisher began promoting a discount for new clients at the start of her nail career. However, after six months she stopped as she felt that her work spoke for itself. “For anyone starting out I would recommend a slight discount to entice clients, or I offer vouchers with a cuticle pen. This starts the client on their nail journey using INK London products before they have even seen me,” she says.

INK London educator, Natasha Fisher, agrees that being transparent about the brand and products you use, as well as educating clients on their nails, builds trust with them. “I always ask if they have any questions and talk them through every step of what I am doing to help them understand why it’s Natasha Fisher so important for their nails and longevity of their enhancement,” she says. Personal touches are also key, as Magpie Beauty educator, Ruth Munro, points out. “I contact clients personally before their treatment to discuss the nail design they’d like, then make sure to pull out any extra products during the appointment to complement their style,” she explains. Ruth Munro “I display a variety of gels and glitters in my salon, so clients are enticed to come back because they spot products and begin planning their next set,” she adds.

Nicole Dowling

However, catering to a client doesn’t just mean tending to their nail needs. “Some clients like to spend the appointment time relaxing whereas others enjoy chit chat, so always ask what the client would prefer,” comments Pure Nails educator, Nicole Dowling. “If they desire to chat, I speak about the other treatments I offer, tempting them to come back.”

Nicole Dowling uses discounts to build up her junior staff’s clientele, but stresses that there are important points to consider before doing so. “You need to factor in things like hourly wage and costs of products as you don’t want to leave yourself short,” she explains. This is how Pure Nails Halo VIP, Lucy Mears, has successfully created her loyalty programme, which sees clients get £5 off every sixth appointment. “I’ve managed to make it work by planning discounts that are meaningful to the client but not detrimental to my profit margin, using careful pricing and ensuring the Lucy Mears experience my clients get makes them want to return,” she tells Scratch. “Loyalty programmes don’t work for every business, however I have found that having one encourages clients to regularly rebook and builds a longer lasting and more personal relationship with them,” she continues. Tina Bell, head of Pure Nails education, uses a similar reward programme concept in her salon but tailors this to her most loyal clientele. “We have a top clients’ rewards scheme, where the top 50 clients that return on a regular basis are chosen at random twice a month Tina Bell to receive free treatments,” she explains. “Things like this can open a client’s mind to a treatment they had never previously considered.”

4. Make the most of marketing

While standing out from your competition and having an attractive deal or loyalty scheme can be hugely successful, if not marketed effectively your business will reap no rewards. “Communicating the value of your services regularly via social media, text and email is key, as this builds a good relationship with your clients and keeps your business and tempting treatments in their mind,” explains Ruth Munro. “I ensure this content has simple calls to action, including direct booking links and key information, so new and regular clients can book quickly and easily. “Sharing reviews and transformation pictures, which remind clients how much better they feel after a treatment, are other great ways to bring clients back into the salon,” she adds.

Tiffany Minifie

“When your clients see pictures of a beautiful, fresh manicure or trending design, it might remind them to book in again so they can have that,” agrees The GelBottle Inc. specialist, Tiffany Minifie. “If the nail brand you use releases a new product or collection, you could also share this to your social media, asking clients if they’d like to try one of the colours/products at their next visit,” she suggests.

An example of a marketing text used by Ruth Munro to encourage clients to rebook.

Jade Miller shares a comment about her loyalty scheme from her client, Gemma... “A loyalty card is lovely because it shows that a business values its customers, so I would be more likely to return to a salon that has one over one that doesn’t. It’s definitely an incentive to return if you know you’re building a reward for yourself.” SCRATCHMAGAZINE.CO.UK 89

UNDERSTANDING THE

A

lot of people ask me how to beat the ever-changing Instagram algorithm. However, I believe that if you’re adding great value to your audience, you don’t need to worry so much about algorithms. The below tips have helped my clients, my members and I to build our audiences the right way. Remember – there is no rush, as you want followers that are interested in you and your content.

Optimise your bio Your Instagram bio is one of the first things a potential client will see, and they will decide within the first few seconds if they want to follow you or not. Instagram is a visual platform so keeping your bio short and easy to read is key. People want simple, quick answers to their questions. For a brilliant bio, you need to showcase how your business can help the viewer.

Your content doesn’t always have to be promotional posts or images of your nail styles; take followers on a video tour of your nail space and introduce your team.

Check insights Marketing is all about testing what works. Try new things but regularly check your insights. See what is working and what isn’t so that when you plan content for the following month, you can determine what will resonate well with your followers.

Be social

COURSE

Bites Are you keen to become an educator, but unsure how to make the move? Get the scoop on the latest course offering from the Be Inspired platform... THE COURSE: Aspire 2 Educate MEET MELANIE LEWENDON Based in Derbyshire, Melanie ‘Mel’ Lewendon is a multi award-winning beauty therapist and nail technician of 14 years. She has been educating for seven years and in addition to running courses at her own academy, she is head of education for KB Educate. Following the retirement of nail artist and educator, Sam Biddle, from the nail industry in 2021, Mel has taken over her Be Inspired platform, which is dedicated to online nail learning. With a clear passion for education in the nail industry, Mel has focused her efforts on Aspire 2 Educate, a course available via Be Inspired. It has been designed for existing and budding educators to obtain support when aspiring to teach their own courses.

About: Aspire 2 Educate has been in the making since 2021 and offers the tools to help nail professionals set up an academy and better understand the education arena for nails.

“I have had great success with teaching and I owe that to the great teaching I received from the educators who have mentored me and who I’ve looked up to. Now, I feel I need to mentor others.” 92 SCRATCHMAGAZINE.CO.UK

Why:

“After taking over Sam Biddle’s Be Inspired platform, and stealthily watching nail groups and listening to colleagues, I decided it was time to personally take action,” reveals Mel. “There is currently a skills crisis within our industry, as reported by the NHBF, as salons are struggling to fill posts and apprenticeships because many people are now moving into self-employed roles. I have been seeing and hearing about sub-standard education, gaps in education, and how educators are at fault for bad standards. “The Covid-19 crisis has produced lots of substandard online courses. Courses are lacking in content and therefore poor work is being carried out on the public. However, rather than beating down the educators and their courses, or knocking those that want to educate, I want to help them become great educators and deliver good content. “While regulations may be forthcoming, I feel this is the way for me to be proactive in my approach to help this skills crisis. I have had great success with teaching and I owe that to the great teaching I received from the educators who have mentored me and who I’ve looked up to. Now, I feel I need to mentor others.”

Objective: The course addresses education gaps while regulations are being discussed and gives educators confidence in the work they are delivering. The course starts right from the beginning so even if you are an existing educator, you can benefit from a knowledge refresher.

Who: The course is ideal for people who are looking to become educators, and those that are educators that feel they need more assistance. This course is anonymous and welcomes those that work as brand educators but wish to explore additional or alternative education. Aspire 2 Educate is also being offered to nail brands to serve up awareness for educators about what needs to be taught, and the work done behind the scenes.

TRAININGSPOTLIGHT

Duration:

There is no time limit on the course, as it is designed to work at your pace and around your commitments. The course is fully online and is available now on the Be Inspired learning platform.

“This course will help you develop and grow to be confident enough to stand up and say ‘I can teach, I will teach, and I am confident in what I’m teaching’.”

Cost: £299 (this payment can be split and paid in two or three instalments.)

Structure: Writing manuals, lesson plans and planning will all be completed by the delegate under Mel’s guidance. Further support will come from a designated Facebook group.
