Old Town Festival Update

The Old Town Festival Saturday 6th – Sunday 14th June The College of Chivalry are already sharpening their swords, painting their shields and taking aim with their arrows in preparation for the fantastic events held in the Lawn on Sunday 7th June for this year’s Old Town Festival.

We are a local re-enactment group based by Roves Farm and have provided displays for different schools and events and it will be great to see some of these children again at the festival.

We will be dazzling the crowds with the clash of steel, the crack of the bow and the screams of excitement as one Knight reveals himself to be the greatest of them all. This year we will be offering a range of different activities at the festival. •

Train to be a Knight - Learn how to sword fight with our sword masters, using the wooden swords and progressing to true steels.

Have a go archery - Try your luck at releasing arrows against our targets (Could you be the next Robin Hood?)

Sharp Cutting demonstration - see how our Sharp Swords cut through the different containers.

Tournament Fights - Come scream and shout and support your favourite Knight as they do battle in a tournament, ending in the grand melee.

The College have become involved with the Old Town Festival to bring colour, excitement and entertainment to the festival as well as provide education as to life in the Middle Ages.

Old Town Festival Opening Ceremony

Sun June 7th 2015 10:00 - 12:00pm Come and join us for the official opening of this popular family festival. Meet the princesses and have your photo taken with them. Enjoy a bite to eat and drink from one of old Town’s many excellent food outlets. Be entertained by Commonweal School Street

For the first time we are taking part in the Parade, our banners are prepared our armour being polished and our tabards cleaned. We call on everyone who witnesses the parade to look out for the family crests of the knights and shout to support them as they slowly clank their way through Old Town to the Lawn where they will run their tournament style combats throughout the day at half hour intervals. Theatre who are sure to raise a smile or two! Then join us as Cllr Andrew Bennet, our patron Sheila Harrod and our festival Chair Josie Williams open the event for you the people of Swindon. Then watch the festival parade as it come along Wood Street at 11am and follow them if you wish as they wend their way around Old Town and on to The Lawn for the parade judging. Parade organised by Kitty from the Kitty Langan Studio.

Although our appeal has yet to be launched publicly, please find below some information about how the funds raised from The Old Town Festival will help make a difference to local people with a cancer diagnosis in Swindon and Wiltshire. Each year hundreds of patients travel an average of 2,500 miles to receive essential Radiotherapy treatment. At one of the most vulnerable times in their lives they make this journey away from their support networks. We need to raise ÂŁ3 million in order to equip a Radiotherapy facility in Swindon. Why support us? For too long local people in need of radiotherapy have had to make the long journey to Oxford for treatment. Typically this means up to 40 trips to Oxford over the course of one to seven weeks. Not only does this mean patients having to endure long journeys at a time when they are unwell, it also means spending precious time travelling, rather than with loved ones. Every day, eight people are told the devastating news that they have cancer. In 2013, 669 patients from Swindon travelled to Oxford University Hospital to receive radiotherapy. This equates to 10,043 journeys of 70 miles. This is our once in a lifetime chance to support the biggest improvement in cancer care Swindon has seen in a generation. Brighter Futures, the charity for Great Western Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, are running an appeal in order to provide the equipment needed for a new Radiotherapy Centre at the Great Western Hospital site in Swindon. This is a partnership with Oxford University Hospital who will build the facility at a cost of ÂŁ14 million. Your donation will be used to purchase the equipment required to provide local people with radiotherapy in Swindon. To find out more about Brighter Futures and how you can get more involved in the Radiotherapy appeal, please contact us on 01793 605631 or email fundraising@gwh.nhs.uk Please note:In the event of the Radiotherapy appeal not proceeding and/or the target being exceeded, all funds raised will be used in the provision of Cancer Services at Great Western Hospital Registered Charity 1050892

Summer Allergies

Hay fever sufferers know clear blue skies and warm days in the summer often mean a high pollen count. Details are even given out on the national weather forecast. Our pets do not usually show the respiratory symptoms that we know as hay fever, but they do suffer from pollen allergies. In dogs, atopic dermatitis (atopy) is the most common presentation of an allergy. In mild cases dogs may be seen nibbling at their feet, but do not require treatment. In more severe cases, the feet, the ventral abdomen and often the ears and face become inflamed and itchy, and sometimes the whole body is affected. Treatment may require control of secondary infection, but is mainly aimed at reducing the itch. Steroids are usually very effective but their use must be carefully controlled. Antihistamines can be useful in preventing an allergic reaction but will not clear up existing lesions. It is possible by means of blood ANYTHING SWINDON

or patch testing to find out what the allergen (the cause) is, and creation of a vaccine against this (immunotherapy) may be helpful. The main allergens in dogs causing atopy are assorted pollens (esp. grasses & trees), dust mites, storage mites (found in dry food bins) and flea saliva. Food allergies can be a cause but this is less common. Dust mites are present in all houses however clean they appear to be. Storage mites are usually found where people keep dry dog food in storage bins. If the bin is not thoroughly emptied and cleaned out before the next bag is emptied into it, there is a risk of storage mites proliferating. It is advisable, if you keep food in a bin, to still keep it in the bag and not empty the food out. Allergy to flea saliva can be controlled to a large extent by good control of the fleas both on the dog and in the environment. In cats, the most commonly seen allergy associated skin condition is due to flea saliva. ‘Flea allergic dermatitis’ usually presents as some or all of the following: thinning of the hair coat along the spine; scabby spots around the head and along the spine; excessive grooming and thin hair on the ventral abdomen. Again, good flea control is essential. True food allergies (as opposed to food intolerance) are rare, and can usually be identified by putting the animal on a strict exclusion diet. Urticaria is an allergic reaction that appears suddenly in reaction to contact, inhalation or ingestion of an allergen. Most commonly seen in dogs it appears as soft raised areas in the skin over the whole body and is usually not itchy. The sudden appearance of a solitary swelling may be due to a bee or wasp sting and remember that a massive swelling around the head of a dog could be due to an adder bite (they will investigate with their noses!). If you see significant swelling always get this checked by your Vet to ensure that the animal’s airway is not affected. 24 HR EMERGENCY SERVICE TELEPHONE: (01793) 522483 www.drovevets.co.uk

Deena Honey Feature

SWINDON “I Love You” South, where I found a great sense of community and I have some amazing tenant in those houses. So Thank you, tenants. I have also had the pleasure of working on properties in the village of Purton, also have quite a bit going on in Stratton at the moment and Rodbourne too.

I remember this night in September 2008 as if it were yesterday, the property market had just crashed and I only knew that because it was being talked about on the TV not because I was an expert in property far from it. In fact at that time I knew nothing about the property Sector, So how the hell did I find myself that night in a room of 300 property experts. It was a property networking event which is where property experts go to share information, and I remember distinctively saying to myself, Deena what the hell are you doing here. I still don’t know to this day how I ended up there, but I did, and that was the start of my journey into the world of property. I continued to go back to those property networking events so I could educate myself as I so wanted to become one of those property experts too. I was now 18 month into my property journey, and that’s when I found Swindon. I remember walking up and down Commercial Road scared to visit any of the estate agents as didn’t think they would be interested in what I had to say or would not take me seriously. PAGE 12

My Dad was right “if you don’t ask you don’t get”. Thanks for that Dad.

I soon realised if I was to understand Swindon I needed to live and breathe it. So that’s exactly what I did. My first property was a two bedroom flat in Stratton and in Feb 2010 I moved to Swindon not knowing a sole and took up residence in my flat.

I believed that to be successful in the property sector I needed to gain some people skills, become a problem solver and most important of all a good listener. So I worked hard to learn those skills and it has paid off as I often deal with sellers directly and again have been fortunate enough to have met some lovely people along the way. As a result, I have been able to help many sellers, so thanks to all those people that decided to contact me over the years. So here I am almost seven years later still buying and selling properties in Swindon, providing great rental accommodation in both houses and rooms. Just goes to show anything is possible and lastly...

...Thank you SWINDON I still love you.

I was full of trepidation and fear, and most of all was I going to be able to make this work and become successful. After months of due diligence and with some help from the local estate agents I began to see a great opportunity, and that’s when I fell in love with SWINDON. Since then I have bought properties in most parts of Swindon including Pinehurst, Penhill, both Park North and Park

What a first anniversary present! What a way to round off a superb first year in business for Hilary Coates, who runs the SN franchise of Wagging Tails – to be announced as the winner of the EWIF (Encouraging Women into Franchising) award for New Woman Franchisee of the Year.

‘To win this award shows that I am going in the right direction with my business, and would love to have more wonderful dog carers to be able to offer owners peace of mind when they leave their dog to go away on holiday’ said Hilary. Barbara, a carer since the start of the service, simply describes it as ‘the best job ever’ and is very pleased she decided to pick up the phone and call. Hilary is looking for people across the SN postcode area, but specifically Swindon and Chippenham and all areas in between, to make sure that owners can have their dog cared for by licensed and insured carers.

This month we interviewed Jeremy Sturgess, Managing Director of Twigmarket Ltd.

The private company who took over the running of Broome Manor and Highworth Golf Courses in November 2014 following a controversial privatisation process run by Swindon Borough Council. So how is it going after the first six months? Everything is going well. The golf courses are in good shape, Membership Numbers are up, and the relatively benign weather has meant we have had a good start to the year. How are the customers reacting to your takeover? Pretty well. People don’t usually like change but so far so good. We’ve successfully transitioned around 2,000 Leisure Card holders to our Privilege Card that offers decent discounts in return for a £10 annual fee and our new Gym is certainly proving popular. Your company got quite a bit of criticism from local media during the bidding process. Why was that? Unfortunately, the bidding process became quite political and so as an unknown quantity we came in for some flak. I think there was concern about our financial standing, perhaps because in the past we had only filed Abbreviated Accounts at Companies House. This year we have now filed Full Accounts, so the real picture is clear for all to see. SBC had insisted on seeing these anyway, so they were pretty relaxed. Some people questioned our experience despite the fact that this is our 25th year in the golf industry and some others thought we just wanted to shut the Golf and build houses which was all nonsense!

PAGE 14

So what plans have you got for Broome Manor? All of our plans are contained in the Business Plan that was submitted to SBC as part of the bidding process. I’m not sure if this is a public document or not but to summarise the contents. - At Broome Manor we have opened an enlarged Gym following the low-cost model with Membership from £16.95 and no minimum contract; and in July we will open a new Cafe and Golf Reception following a £200,000 refurbishment of the Clubhouse ground floor. Later on and subject to planning permission being granted we hope to build a 50 bedroom hotel extension to the Clubhouse, an 18 hole adventure golf course, new Greenkeepers sheds and a new 4,000sqft Golf Shop. That sounds very exciting and expensive. I suppose you’ll put the prices up to pay for this? No, as we promised last year Season Ticket and Green fee prices will only rise with inflation for the foreseeable future, although we will increase Range prices a bit to bring them into line with competitors.

But yes it’s expensive; we hope to invest nearly £3 million in the site, creating many new jobs and ensuring its future as a leading leisure destination in Swindon. That’s also why we insisted on a 75 year lease as this investment could not be justified on a short lease.

Feature Why didn’t the Council make these investments and keep the courses under public control? The Council were losing money at these facilities, and the budget cuts had made it very difficult to secure funding for leisure services. There was a real risk they may have had to close the courses if they hadn’t found a private sector solution. So an investment like this was out of the question I think. Now they are receiving a large rent and business rates payment from us, so I think overall they must be very happy with the outcome. Any plans for the golf course? Even though Golf is generally in decline with falling revenues throughout the UK, we consider the Golf Course to be the most important asset we have. People come to Broome because of the course, and we are

determined to improve it. Already around £30,000 has been invested in new machinery, and we hope to see a better-presented course this year. What are you most excited about? What most excites me is that our Golf Teaching Academy programme run by Lee Haywood and Mark Sandry from Swindon Premier Golf Academy www.spgolfacademy.co.uk have now got over 115 kids into weekly golf lessons. This bodes very well for the future, and I hope we can spread the word that we have the best Junior Golf section in Wiltshire.

Thank you Jeremy. Anything Swindon wish you the best of luck with your plans for the future of “Broome Manor Golf Complex”

HIGHWORTH & SWINDON WALKING CLUB The Highworth & Swindon Walking Club is a friendly group whose members enjoy walking in the countryside. We organise walks every Sunday and Wednesday throughout the year - usually within a 35 mile radius of Swindon, which covers many beautiful areas such as the Cotswolds, Thames Valley and Marlborough Downs. We cater for walkers of different abilities, with walks graded from very easy to very hard. Good footwear and suitable clothing for the weather conditions are recommended. Sorry, no dogs. Members meet in Swindon or Highworth as indicated on the programme, and, to minimise the use of cars, we share cars wherever possible, the costs being shared between the driver and passengers.

On one Sunday each month we arrange a Welsh walk, usually in the Brecon Beacons National Park. The Club also has walking weekends away each year, exploring different parts of the country, as well as social events. The programme of walks and events is published with a Newsletter every 4 months. Prospective members are welcome to participate in a walk for a maximum of 3 times before being asked to join the Club. The Club is an independent organisation affiliated to The Ramblers. Currently the annual membership fee is £5.00 per person. Anyone interested can view our current walks and events programmes on our website: highworthandswindonwalkingclub.btck.co.uk

Every second Wednesday there is a short walk of up to 6 miles with the offer of an optional Pub lunch at the end. Otherwise our ‘standard’ walks have itineraries ranging from 8 to 11 miles in length; for these please bring a packed lunch and enough water.

Skate Did you know there are over 200 species of skate divided into two-subfamilies hardnose skate and softnose skate. They are very similar to Rays however they do differ in that skate lay their fertilized eggs in what is known as a mermaids purse and rays bear their young in their bodies and give birth to them alive, also rays are generally bigger than skate. Skate have a slow growth rate and are therefore susceptible to over fishing and in recent years have been subject to the endangered list. At the Lobster Pot we prefer to stock skate rather than rays and have found them to be particularly popular. One drawback of the skate is their rate of deterioration. They can go off quite quickly and are not good when they emit a strong smell of amonia. They are best eaten within 3-4 days of them being caught and should skinned and be a deep pink colour when sold. Having said that they have a wonderful sweet, soft and flavoursome taste. The flesh is pulled from the main cartilage a bit like strands of spaghetti. Apart from the classic recipe of skate with a caper butter, which I wrote about in an earlier article, why not try roasted skate with roast vine cherry tomatoes with a dijon dressing. First halve and oven roast some cherry vine tomatoes, drizzled with a good quality olive oil, sea salt and cracked black pepper in an oven at 200oC (gas 6). After about 10 minutes add the seasoned skate next to the tomatoes on a roasting tray and roast for another 10 minutes. To make the dressing- mix some olive oil, a splash of white wine vinegar, a teaspoon of dijon mustard, a squeeze of lemon and some capers together and pour over the fish and continue to cook for a further 2 minutes in the oven. Serve with some mashed potato, seasoned, and mixed with fine chopped leeks sweated in a little olive oil. Plain poached asparagus would make an ideal accompanyment. So what you waiting for? Get a ‘skate’ on and pop into the Wood Street Foodhall for this delicious recipe.

What expenses can I claim through my Company on top of mileage? When staying away overnight, you can claim for the costs of accommodation. You can also claim Incidental Overnight Expenses, not necessarily for business but items such as toothpaste, phone calls to family etc. (receipts not needed), up to £5 per night in the UK and £10 outside the UK. -When staying with friends/family, claim for a meal, a gift, or a contribution to bills. Claim the actual amount and keep receipts if possible. -Claim for property rental, utilities and Council Tax. Site costs for staying away in your own caravan. Fund Raising This month we speak with Swindon resident Belinda McCormick ahead of her daughter’s treatment for Hodgkin’s Lymphoma, which will see her son donate bone marrow for the operation. When did Paris find out she had Hodgkin’s lymphoma?

Do you already have a bone marrow donor?

What will you do to raise this money?

MARCH 2014 after feeling very unwell Paris was rushed to the hospital and was given a scan as she had developed some painful lumps in her neck and instant pain when drinking alcohol. We were shocked to find out the next day that the test results had come back that Paris had the highest form of Hodgkin’s Lymphoma.

Her brother Brad aged 20 was tested and luckily an identical match.

My family and I have recently set up a FundMe page in the hope that generous donations can help towards my stay in London while Paris recovers from her operation. We have already received donations from some very caring and generous people of whom we are very thankful

How quickly did treatment start for Paris? Treatment started within a couple of weeks and lasted for six months, and the Lymphoma appeared to respond. A CT scan revealed no traces of any lumps and the hospital said they would still need to do a PET scan in Oxford, but they would be surprised if this showed anything. Sadly we did not get to the PET scan stage as Paris had a drink one evening and had the instant pain back. Cancer that we thought had gone was still lurking and had progressed aggressively. Two more types of chemo followed which both failed to reduce it, and it was still growing. In April this year they tried another regime Brentuximab, which appears to be reducing all the lumps. As cancer now appears to be under control Paris needs to have a stem cell (bone marrow) transplant. PAGE 40

Will the operation take place in Wiltshire? No, the transplant will take place at the Royal Free Hospital in Hampstead London and Paris will be in recovery here for 5 to 6 weeks and will not be allowed out of her room. Will you be allowed to stay with Paris during the recovery stages? The Swindon Great Western Hospital informed us today that the Royal Free Hospital no longer provide rooms for parents to stay. On looking at the local accommodation, the local Premier Inn do give a small discount on the £119 a night rooms. Paris will be in the hospital for five to six weeks and as I have given up work to be her carer I am unable to afford this.

If you would like to help Belinda stay close to Paris during this time then all support would be greatly appreciated, and donations can be made at: http://www. gofundme.com/ t7gx3c
