MESSAGE FROM THE TEAM Welcome to our July edition of Anything Swindon magazine.
INSIDE THIS ISSUE:
This month we are looking forward to the kids breaking up from school and hoping for a lot more Sun. Not because we are going on our holidays but because the roads are so much better in Swindon without the school run traffic and with Greenbridge slowly turning into Bruce Street Bridges we are all in for frustrating times.

Established in 1972, the Woodland Trust is the UK’s largest woodland conservation charity. Over the last 40 years or so, we have acquired more than 1,000 woodland sites covering over 20,000 hectares (50,000 acres). The Woodland Trust is a charity registered in England and Wales (No. 294344) and in Scotland (No. SC038885).

Old Town Festival Saturday 11th – 18th June 2016 The Old Town Festival 2016 was a fantastic week of events for all the family! Luckily the sun shone and the crowds came out to relax with friends and family. From the Line Dancing, Let’s Sing choir events to the Parade, the Commonweal Performing Arts Marquee, Dog Show, Fairground Rides, the Scouts’ Climbing Wall, College of Chivalry and stalls at the Lawn to the Christ Church recitals, the Pop Concert in the Bowl at the Town Gardens, there was something for everyone! Special thanks to Holmes Music for providing the back line for the band events and Paul Bulimore for engineering the sounds, and to all the bands who gave freely of their time to support our charity. Thank you to Jane Carter from Drove Vets for another well attended and well organised dog show. Thanks also to Baker Street for badging one of their jazz events under our banner and to Clifton Street public house for doing likewise with their quiz evening. Big thank you to Days Catering and Rays Ice Cream for feeding the committee members and helping to keep body and soul together! The committee is a very strong team of volunteers who are committed to the festival and without them the festival simply wouldn’t happen! Thank you one and all for your services to the community, you are unsung heroes! Thank you also to our Patron Sheila Harrod for her continued support which is very much appreciated by us all. Thank you to all our sponsors, without you it would be very difficult to find the finances to fund the festival. These include Anything Swindon, Screaming Media, Swindon Advertiser, Swindon 105.5, Commonweal School, Christ Church, Holmes Music, Swindon Borough Council, Rays Ice Cream, Kitty Langan Studio PAGE 6
In my capacity as Community Arts Development and Press Liaison Officer at Commonweal I feel I have got a lot to bring to the festival. I have over twelve years’ experience in Commonweal organising events and leading teams both in school and in the wider community. Thank you to Headteacher Keith Defter for seconding me and thus enabling me to be free to stand as Chair. Josie Williams, Festival Chair 2016

SNDogs July update
Registered Charity No. 1163257 SNDogs (Saving Needy Dogs) Firstly a heart-felt ‘Thank You’ ……. many of you may have heard that the SNDogs food shed was broken into and lots of donated food was taken – we were overwhelmed by the kind response from Anything Swindon readers, supporters and members of public who donated food, treats and money to replenish the the dog food stores – we also managed to buy a new shed to replace the very old leaking one! Dog Show 2016 Update Wow! What an amazing day we had at the Old Town Festival ! Despite the morning showers the weather brightened in time for the parade and the day began with marching bands, dancers, music and lots of colour!! ‘Dave’ our mascot walked the streets and danced as all 7ft cats dressed as vets do!! By the time we got back to the dog show arena people were already booking places at the classes and we were flooded with Swindon’s Glamorous Girlies, Loveable Lads, Adorable Adolescents and many more canine friends.
The festival is a great opportunity to give something back and get involved in the old town community that we have been part of for over 150 years. Also it is a great practice day out and a way we help our chosen charity. Hopefully everything is taken in good spirit and we try to make the judging as light hearted as possible – who can POSSIBLY choose between 10 puppies in a ring?! Having said that our winners were all the most adorable and well behaved little stars (some weren’t so little either!). We are always amazed at how little trouble there is with so many dogs in one area so credit goes out to their owners. Thankfully the whole day ran smoothly and going by the comments on facebook and feedback we have had the public had a great time and canine competitors enjoyed being centre of attention. We’re gearing up now for our second event of the year where our team at Stratton run the dog show there on July 16th – more mayhem to come! I believe this time there will be even more dressing up and craziness in the ring with hopefully lots of entertainment and fun. We hope to see some of you there !
We were delighted at the turnout and involvement of the local community and we raised £500 for our adopted charity of the year – Research into Alabama Rot. We are very proud to be part of the old town festival and it is such a fun day but blimey it’s tiring stuff!! PAGE 14

Drove Vets Feature Broadly speaking this means that both the physical health and mental wellbeing of each pet needs to be thought through carefully. The Animal Welfare act of 2007 means that the owner of a pet is legally responsible for the welfare needs of their animal.
We have been asked recently what makes a responsible owner, and though the full answer is beyond the scope of this column, and open to much debate, I thought I would highlight a few areas. Owning any animal, from a stick insect to a horse, takes some degree of responsibility, and thus should never be under taken lightly. Owning a pet means you are responsible for their welfare for their entire lives.
This briefly includes the need for a suitable place to live with a suitable diet where they can exhibit normal behaviours, also the right for animals to be housed with or without others as appropriate and to be protected from pain, suffering, injury and disease. The physical health is usually straightforward in a young animal. Are they bright and happy, eating and playful? There are preventative treatments that can be carried out, in the form of vaccination, worming, teeth cleaning and grooming which can stop diseases from occurring. These combined with prompt veterinary attention when your animal becomes unwell, all display a responsible level of care for their physical health. Touching on mental welfare briefly, are your pet’s needs being met? Are they being mentally stimulated on a daily basis, either on their daily walks, in their feeding methods or at times of play? A bored or stressed animal often manifests in destructive behaviour, either of their surroundings or themselves.
Do you have the time, space and the finances to care for a new member of the family who is completely dependent on you for their needs? Have you researched what their needs will be as they get older, and how long they will be around for? Cats and dogs like us live longer than they used to, we have several cats on our books that are in their late teens and early twenties. Clearly there is a huge difference between being responsible for a mouse versus a dog, but the same thought process must apply to both.
PAGE 16
The RSPCA website has some good basic tips on many animals’ needs if you are thinking about getting a pet. Owning any pet can be extremely rewarding but like anything that is worth having can involve a lot of time and effort. Always remember if you have any concerns about your pet, please contact your vet.

Health & Fitness Feature
To help you kick off the summer in a healthy way, nutritional advisor Amy Liddell at Scope Ophthalmics has put together some top tips to help you keep hydrated. Why Hydration Matters “Water makes up about two thirds of our body, and during the summer months we lose water at a faster rate as our body naturally sweats out moisture to cool us down. If we don’t top up our water reserves we can start to feel dehydrated – with tiredness, dry skin and even dry eyes being common symptoms!” shares Amy Liddell. 5 Expert Tips To Stay Hydrated This Summer 1: Swap Table Salt for Sea Salt: Did you know that adding a pinch of unrefined sea salt to drinking water or meals can help to satisfy your thirst for longer? It’s all down to the mineral content of sea salt which holds more of the hydrating water in your body. On the other hand, table salt which is very heavily processed (and has lost most of its goodness) has the opposite effect when consumed – giving rise to even more salt cravings and feelings of thirst! 2: Try hydrating eye drops: UV rays and warmer weather can trigger dry eye symptoms which can leave eyes feeling irritated and ‘gritty’. Refreshing eye drops like Hycosan Fresh (RRP £8.99 Boots) uses natural ingredients to boost eye moisture and reduce redness. It’s preservative free and suitable for contact lens wearers too! Try a new online Eye Health Test to see if you could be experiencing dry eyes and find out what to do if you are! 3: Slather it for Supple Summer Skin: Our skin contains mostly water so keeping it hydrated is essential for a healthy summer glow! During the summer, high temperatures, humidity and intensive UV radiation can contribute towards less volume of water in the skin. This can cause the skin to lose its elasticity making it appear dry and flaky. As well as keeping your skin hydrated through dietary intake, applying a daily moisturiser can help your skin to retain water so that it stays soft and supple. Look out for moisturisers with built in SPF for extra protection. 4: Eat it Up - Who says you can’t have your water and eat it too? Fruits and vegetables are brimming with water and contain minerals that help our bodies hydrate effectively. Up your water intake with these hydrating and healthy snacks: • Watermelon: This summer staple is made up of 92% water and is a great snack to have during hot days to prevent dehydration. Get creative at your next BBQ and serve watermelon slices on a stick for a refreshing dessert! ANYTHING SWINDON
• Cucumbers: Made up of mostly water, cucumbers have no saturated fat and are high in vitamin B6 making them the perfect addition to any summer salad. • Strawberries: No summer picnic is complete without these sweet treats; and with each strawberry containing 92% of water they are great sharing snack to maintain hydration. 5: Upgrade your H20: While it’s true that a glass of water is the best known way to stay replenished, there are plenty of alternative options if you don’t like the taste of plain water. Listed below are some examples of beverages that can contribute to your daily water intake: • DIY Thirst Quenchers: Flavoured waters that are available to buy in stores are a sneaky source of excess sugar, something that so many of us are trying to avoid. Making your own fruit infusions at home can provide a great refresher if plain water doesn’t quite cut it. Our favourites are raspberry and ginger, cucumber and mint, and blackberry and sage. Layer the ingredients in the bottom of the bottle, fill with ice and water, and leave to infuse for 30 minutes. • Coconut water: There’s a good reason why people have been going nuts for this tropical drink recently! Coconut water is a nutritious and relatively low-calorie way to add potassium to your diet and keep you well-hydrated. However, it’s important to remember that not all coconut water is created equal and to avoid versions with added sugar. To reap the full benefits, make sure you read the label and opt for 100% natural coconut water.

Anything Swindon June 2016: Wroughton & Wichelstowe Ward Wroughton Neighbourhood Plan Referendum: Approximately 87% of those who voted, voted in favour of the Plan. Now Swindon Borough Council must formally ‘make’ the plan (in effect they adopt the plan) through Cabinet on 13th July and Council on 14th July. Once ‘made’, the Neighbourhood Plan has the status of a Development Plan Document. ie: it has the same status as the Local Plan in the determination of planning applications in Wroughton Parish. Devizes Road Zebra Crossing: This is nearly complete and should be finished soon. We continue to look into various other highway and parking issues with Borough Council officers and the Parish Council to try to find solutions or improvements. We try to help wherever possible. Mp Update
Robert Buckland MP Update At a time when we have been facing developments not in accordance with the Swindon Local Plan, it was vital that Wroughton residents turned out in force to express their view about the Neighbourhood Plan. I was pleased to learn that around 40% of residents did just that, making the turn-out one of the highest in the country for a Neighbourhood Referendum Plan. 87.3% of the electorate voted in favour of the plan, which will now become a planning document for Wroughton and will set out in details the way in which the Parish should develop over the next ten years. Although this plan will only affect that Parish, I hope that this will be the first of many referendums relating to Neighbourhood Plans for other parts of Swindon. Back in April, I helped to launch this year’s Town Gardens Little Big Festival. The event runs from April – September and over the course of the summer, various talented local artists will be putting on shows, which anyone can go to. The Little Big Festival aims to build communities and get people out and about in their local park. You can find further details about free performances taking place by visiting www.commonwealarts.co.uk/pages2013-2014/littlebigfestival2014.html As ever, please do not hesitate to contact me if you have a local or national issue that you would like to raise at one of my regular surgeries. Justin Tomlinson MP Update Local MPs Join Forces To Support Swindon Carers Minister for Disabled People and North Swindon MP Justin Tomlinson has taken part in the annual ‘Walk a Mile in My Shoes’ event organised by Swindon Carers. The aim of the event is to raise awareness of the valuable contribution that carer’s make to society. The charity is a part of the Carers Trust Network and was established to provide help and support to the 900+ carers in North Swindon. They provide a team of professionals and trained volunteers who offer a wide range of support and services to people caring for a friend or relative. Local supporters of Swindon Carers gathered at Theatre Square in town to take part in the walk as well as gather for tea and cake after. The walk came at the end of the national Carers Week campaign. Both Swindon MPs, Justin Tomlinson and Robert Buckland, take part in the walk each year to show their support. Justin Tomlinson MP said: “I want to take this opportunity to thank all of the carers who work exceptionally hard, to provide vital support to loved ones. It is so important that everybody in society recognises the remarkable job that carers do, as well as the contribution they make to local communities across the UK.”

Swindon Talking News Feature
Swindon Talking News provides a lifeline for blind and visually impaired people in Swindon. In a free service, each week a group of dedicated volunteers produce an audio memory stick containing news and items of general interest including sport, gardening, interviews, and other information that the listeners would struggle to know about, for example what time to draw their curtains, and any events and clubs they can attend. The charity also supplies listeners with a player, free of charge, if they haven’t got one.
If you are interested in volunteering, there are various roles available on a Wednesday evening, such as reading or sound engineering, and roles are available on the publicity and fundraising team. The Talking News team can often be found at local fundraising events raising awareness and much needed funds. They are keen to hear from any businesses or individuals that would like to contribute towards some branded T-shirts and promotional items to help raise awareness. Publicity and fundraising officer Gemma Peet said: “It is lovely when a listener comes up to you at an event and lets you know how much it is all appreciated, and they wouldn’t know what to do without it!”
Swindon Talking News relies on word of mouth - as you can imagine it’s difficult to find listeners as most of them are unable to see any advertisements for the service. If you know anyone who is visually impaired please make them aware of this charity. The charity, which has been going for more than 30 years in Swindon, is run entirely by volunteers and has to raise all its own money to keep it running. Sadly not enough people know about it. It now has a dedicated fundraising and publicity team whose mission is to ensure every visually impaired person in Swindon knows about this service. ANYTHING SWINDON
If you’d like to get involved, become a listener or donate items or offer sponsorship, please email us on stan@swindontalkingnews.org.uk or call 01793 522511.

Advice for small businesses AMS Accountancy Ltd. 01793 818400
My business partner spent the profits from our business – am I now responsible for the debts? If your business is a Partnership, not a Limited Company or a Limited Liability Partnership (LLP), all partners are “jointly and severally liable” for the Partnership debts. If there are no Partnership funds for the bills, creditors can chase you personally for the money – even though your partner took it out of the business. In a Limited Company or a Limited Liability Partnership, you would not be liable for these debts. Here, the monies and assets would be owned by the business itself. Exceptions: loans with a personal guarantee and trading while insolvent or fraudulently. www.ask-ams.co.uk @AMSAccountancy www.ams-accountancy.co.uk

Liam Richardson Feature
RICK STEIN SOUS-CHEF COOKS UP A DEMONSTRATION FOR SWINDON COLLEGE STUDENTS 18 year old Joshua Headland, is doing his Professional Cookery Level 2 course at the college. He said “Today has been a good experience, watching how everything is done in a Rick Stein restaurant. It’s quite cool to know that as a company they have vacancies available to people like us.” Rosie Davis, aged 33, who is an apprentice on the Level 2 Professional Cookery course, said Swindon College cookery students were treated to a demonstration of how to make a classic seafood dish by one of Rick Stein’s sous chefs, whilst hearing about career opportunities in Wiltshire. The students were encouraged to ask as many questions as they wanted to both Liam Richardson, Sous Chef at Rick Stein Winchester, and the recruitment team from The Rick Stein Group, as Singapore Chilli Crab was prepared from start to finish in the student kitchen.
Jobs are currently being advertised for the new team at Rick Stein Marlborough, and it’s fitting that the Sous Chef at that actual eatery will be a former Swindon College student – Simon Barsby.
“The chef was fantastic to watch, he explained everything well. I am going to talk to these people about future opportunities at the new Marlborough restaurant. It’s nice to see seafood being made in our kitchen at the college.”

Curriculum Area Manager for Hospitality, Sian Vockins, said “This is a great opportunity to work with such a well-known, high profile chef and Swindon College is keen to build on these links going forward in terms of work experience and career opportunities for students.” ANYTHING SWINDON
