TESCO IN THE COMMUNITY

In this issue…. A double-page feature celebrates Mothering Sunday, with a collection of messages from loved ones to some of our readers. We speak to local fundraiser and athlete, Janine Bowler, who is about to run across Europe to complete her fifth and sixth marathons – within five weeks of each other – all in the name of charity. We visit Harvey and the team at the National Self Build & Renovation Centre to discuss the success of the Self Build show held in January. Swindon MPs, Robert Buckland and Justin Tomlinson, talk to us about the importance of World Cancer Day. We have an interview with comedian, Paul Merton, who is bringing his show (based entirely on suggestions from the audience!) to the Wyvern Theatre in May.

NSBRC Update

The National Self Build & Renovation Show - Best Show Ever! In January’s edition we met the team from the National Self Build & Renovation Centre (NSBRC) who were preparing for their annual ‘Self Build & Renovation Show’ at the end of the month. We checked in with them again to hear how it went and we’re pleased to find out it was their busiest ever show! Over 3,000 people visited for a weekend of free advice, expert talks and live exhibitions as well as interactive tours of the three life sized houses featured within the Centre.

Harvey explains; “We were delighted to see the show generate over 15,000 sales leads for our exhibiting partners, which goes to show just how much interest there is in building your own home or adding space and value to your existing property. The NSBRC is open all year round (Tuesday to Sunday) and whilst we welcome visitors from all over the UK, we’re always particularly delighted to see people from the Swindon area as this fantastic and unique resource is right on our doorsteps”.

General Manager, Harvey Fremlin said “We are all delighted with the turnout especially considering the cold weather that weekend, and to have seen our best visitor numbers ever made the show very special. It’s clear to us that the appetite for self build and renovation is very high and we look forward to seeing many of our show visitors back in the centre over the coming months.” The Show was sponsored for the first time by NSBRC Partners Checkatrade.com and with over 200 exhibitors on display, visitors were able to have their own questions answered as well as discover the latest products and technologies available for home builders. TV Presenter Craig Phillips was on hand on the Friday to meet visitors and offer his own advice, and he has plenty of experience to call on, having presented over 850 TV Home Improvement & DIY programmes since becoming the first ever UK winner of Big Brother in 2000.

With a full calendar of events, shows and conferences, covering a wide range of topics and themes throughout the year, there is everything you need for your project under one roof! Visiting the centre is easy – its located on J16 just by the Hilton Hotel and there is plenty of free parking. We’ll be hearing more from the NSBRC in a few months as they have just announced that they will be one of the main sponsors of this years ‘Old Town Festival’. We will visit them again ahead of their next show -The BIG Home Improvement Show – on 13th & 14th June. Anything Swindon readers can claim FREE tickets by pre-booking on the website www. nsbrc.co.uk and quoting ‘Swindon2’. Entry on the day is £5.

Janine Bowler - Marathon, March 2015. Some might say that running a marathon constitutes a form of self-harm. I think it’s more like childbirth. I love parts of it, hate parts, it’s painful and after my first one in 2011 I said never again. However, my brain soon tricked me into thinking another one was a good idea. Four years on, I’m about to run my 5th and 6th, five weeks apart – Zurich Barcelona marathon on 15 March; London marathon 26 April; my 4th and 5th for the Zurich Community Trust (ZCT), having run London three times for them previously and the Cheltenham Marathon in 2014 for the Prospect Hospice. Friends ask me how I find time to train/fundraise. My answer is always the same, ‘If something is worth doing you make time’. I’m a busy, working mum of three, aged 2, 6 and 9. My daughter (our youngest) has health issues requiring lots of hospital trips and I run mum’s taxi for my boys. Hubby works hard and needs his gym time. Put this all together and I don’t have a lot of time for me. So I grab free slots when I can, put on my trainers, push any worries to the back of my head and run - usually at silly o-clock before anyone else is up, but it sets me up for the day ahead. And fundraising? I make events fun - family affairs. I always try to give something back: cake bakes, bingo, raffles, tombolas.

Alzheimer’s Society, CLIC Sargent and MIND. The Alzheimer’s Society’s grant funds their Singing for the Brain Music Therapy Sessions across the UK, which is close to my heart as my grandad suffered from dementia. So that’s me. Thanks to Anything Swindon Magazine Ltd for letting me tell my story. I’d also like to thank my friends and Zurich work colleagues for their support, Dial My Dessert, Marc Blackwell Photography and Swindon Homes Direct.

Direct for their donations.

Why ZCT? Easy. I work for Zurich Financial Services which gave me an open door into the charitable arm of our employer. Once inside, it’s easy to see what a huge difference the Trust makes to many local charities that you’ll know if you live in Swindon, such as the Swindon MS Therapy Centre, STEP, Swindon Carers Centre and TWIGS. The Trust’s current three national partners (each receiving £150,000 grants over three years) are PAGE 6

My target is to raise £2,000, and just because these aren’t my first marathons, it doesn’t mean they’re a walk in the park. Training is relentless and tough. I’m also paying my own way for both races. If you can help, please visit http://uk.virginmoneygiving.com/janinebowler Thank you. Janine

My Tattoo Removal Month Two At the beginning of February I arrived for my second appointment for laser tattoo removal with Heather Cooke at the Gone in a flash surgery in Jenning Street, Rodbourne. My first treatment had been a great success and after just four weeks you could see a clear difference in the appearance of my tattoo. As I mentioned in the January issue this is an uncomfortable procedure so I nervously made myself comfortable as I awaited the second treatment.

in touch every week to ensure there is no apparent scarring and to make sure I am using the relevant oils to help the healing process. It has now been three weeks since my second treatment and there is an obvious change in the appearance of my Tattoo and I am delighted in the whole process. If you are suffering with confidence due to a tattoo or even want to just remove a tattoo for personal reasons, I would 100% recommend booking a consultation with Heather to discuss the procedure in more detail.

Before the procedure started Heather ensured that the tattoo had healed successfully since my first appointment to ensure that we could proceed. Obviously I knew what to expect so in anticipation I waited for the click of the laser, once the treatment starts you find yourself trying to block out the noise, however the treatment for tattoo removal is a fairly quick procedure on a tattoo of this size.I have to express the fantastic after care given by Heather, who is PAGE 8

Prospect Update

Be bright, be colourful, be early for Prospect Hospice events! People who want to take part in two bright and colourful fundraising events for a good cause are being urged to sign up early by Prospect Hospice following a steady flow of registrations since launching their 2015 events booklet. What’s more, people who sign up now for the Starlight Walk in June, or the Run the Rainbow colour run in September, can make a saving on their registration fee by taking advantage of an early-bird scheme currently offered by the charity. The Starlight Walk is an established favourite on the hospice’s calendar, but Run the Rainbow is a new event that’s the first of its type in our area. The popular Starlight Walk is now in its eighth year, and has over time raised thousands of pounds for the local hospice, which last year cared for and supported more than 5,700 people from across the community. The income raised from the Starlight Walk is specifically for their nursing care for which Prospect Hospice has received widespread praise. Last year’s theme, Light up the Night, proved such a hit that it has been kept this year, with new illuminated surprises and walkers being encouraged to don bright, colourful and glowing clothes for the event. Run the Rainbow promises to be equally eye catching in a very different way, as the hospice brings a colour run-style event to the area for the first time in September. For the event, runners are invited to run, walk, skip or dance the 5km course at Wroughton Airfield, where they will be showered with coloured powder paint, reaching the end in all the colours of the rainbow. Until the end of March, registration for the Starlight Walk is just £12, and Run the Rainbow is just £15.

Organiser Genevieve Arney from the Prospect Hospice is urging anyone who is keen to take part in either event to register early. “The Starlight Walk is always our biggest fundraising event of the year,” she says, “and already the number of people who have registered so far shows 2015 is going to be a great year. We are also hugely encouraged that so many people have already signed up for Run the Rainbow. We’re so excited about this new event, and it promises to be great fun on the day. My message to anyone who wants to take part in either event is to register now while we still have spaces available and the early bird offer is still open.” To register for Prospect Hospice’s Starlight Walk, visit www.prospect-hospice.net/starlight and to sign up for Run the Rainbow visit www. prospect-hospice.net/runtherainbow. Each event has a suggested fundraising target of £100. Both events are generously supported by Imagine Cruising. Drove Pets Update “Drove Vets proud to be sponsoring & running Old Town Festival Dog Show on 7th June 2015“ Wanted Dogs of all shapes & sizes, pedigree , cross breeds, scruffy, naughty & nice! Everyone welcome 2 legs & 4! See www.drovevets.co.uk , www.oldtownfestival.co.uk or Facebook for more details. Lynne continues, “There is a significant rat population in the UK, and additionally the shift in disease that appears to be occurring means that the risk may be more widespread than previously thought. The new vaccine now provides important protection against the most common strains affecting dogs in UK and Mainland Europe.”

Vet Column by Drove Veterinary Hospital

Greater protection for dogs as vets introduce new vaccine to protect against deadly disease An important new vaccine for a distressing disease in dogs called Canine leptospirosis has been introduced by Drove Veterinary Hospital Swindon and local branch surgeries. Previous vaccines were only able to protect dogs against two known strains of the disease but new strains of infection, not covered by conventional vaccines, are now being seen. The new vaccine provided by Drove vets will now protect dogs against four strains of leptospirosis giving a much broader defence against the rise of this potentially fatal disease.

Vets have become increasingly concerned that a number of dog owners have fallen behind with vaccination against common infectious diseases in the UK. Lynne confirms, “We need to get the message through to all owners as unfortunately there are still a large number of dogs which have never been vaccinated or whose vaccinations have lapsed. Significant outbreaks of disease have already been seen in some parts of the country when levels of immunity fall below those that control disease spread and so it is vitally important not to become complacent about vaccinating your dog.” Lynne continues, “Vaccination is only part of the preventive health picture, if dogs are missing vaccination boosters they are also losing out on the opportunity for general health checks which are extremely valuable in spotting health problems at an early stage where treatment is possible.” “As vets we are trained to help sick and injured animals but preventive care has to be the best care and regular vaccinations and health checks are by far the best way an owner can actively help their dog’s long term health.” Lynne concludes. Drove Veterinary Hospital is located at 252 Croft Road, Swindon, Wiltshire. SN1 4RW

Vet Lynne Gaskarth explains, “The Leptospirosis bacteria are passed in the urine of rats or other rodents which may carry the infection. The bacteria survive particularly well in damp environments such as ponds and slow moving watercourses where rats may be commonly found.” ANYTHING SWINDON

Come along and meet other residents over a coffee. Every Friday 10-12. Whitbourne Avenue Parking. Fay asked a question at the last council meeting regarding the issuing of parking tickets along Whitbourne Avenue. We are very aware of the problem & are seeking to ease the situation with the lifting of yellow lines at the bus stop. If you have any issues or would like to know more do please get in touch. Councillor Fay Howard, Councillor Derique Montaut & Councillor Neil Heavens Tel 07952350656 or 463800, Email leps@southswindonlabour.co.uk

Penhill & Upper Stratton We’re delighted to be able to report that, following safety concerns being expressed over the state of the footpath that runs from Hyde Road to Cricklade Road, we have successfully pressed the Council to remove piles of decomposing leaves from the footpath. We are now pressing the Council for improvements to the Hyde Road footpath from Beechcroft Road up to the A419 junction. We were also successful recently in getting grass cretes inserted on to the grass verges outside the Penhill Doctor’s Surgery and are pressing the Council to insert cretes on grass verges in other parts of Penhil in order for there to be greater parking provision. Resurfacing of Roads. We can also report the following roads in Penhill & Upper Stratton will be resurfaced in the coming months. In Upper Stratton Hathaway Road, Hackett Close and Pinnocks Place are due for resurfacing. In Penhill Avebury Road, Durnford Road and Minety Road are all due for resurfacing. We’re delighted that these roads will be resurfaced and continue to push for resurfacing on other roads. Penhill & Upper Stratton Councillors- Joe Tray, Teresa Page, Paul Baker

Old Town Traffic surveys on Mill Lane have taken place pre and post Waitrose opening. Comparing the data, it is the Local Highway Authority’s view that there is no immediate need to close Mill Lane. There has been no significant change to traffic speeds and volumes. The Local Highway Authority will continue to monitor the situation with additional surveys undertaken when necessary. We are asking for residents views on a planning application to develop the Wakefield House area, off of Piper Way, to 16 homes and a four storey building. The four storey building will comprise a convenience store on the ground floor and 18 two-bedroom apartments. Following complaints sent to me from residents regarding parked cars on the Westlecot Road Junction with The Mall, making exiting The Mall hazardous, the Council is consulting about possible yellow lines 10m along each road from the junction. Following the consultation on the proposed parking restrictions in East Wichel, the Council have identified some additional parking spaces. All comments will be considered and it will be determined under a lead member’s decision note within the next couple of months. A travel survey will be sent out at the end of February in East Wichel. I hope that as many residents as possible will complete this survey so the Council can gain some valuable data. Also in East Wichel, the Council have recently lowered the speed limit to 20mph on parts of East Wichel Way, and most of the other streets in that area. Having received many concerns from residents about the speed of traffic in the community, we’re hoping the implementation of the 20mph zones will help with this. Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions on this or any other matter. Councillor Nadine Watts - Old Town - 07595071381 - nadine.watts@live.co.uk This month we have only received the comments shown and over the last few months have received comments that we support only one party! Anything Swindon is completely un-biased and welcome comments from all parties. All parties, please send your views to us at info@anythingswindon.co.uk To reach us no later than the 15th of the month, We will only be able to print updates that we receive by this date.

Mp Update

ROBERT AND JUSTIN SUPPORT WORLD CANCER DAY Swindon MPs Robert Buckland and Justin Tomlinson recently supported Cancer Research UK’s Westminster event aimed at highlighting the further work that needs to be done in order to combat cancer.

More must be done, and so last month, the Government launched a new NHS Cancer Taskforce headed up by Harpal Kumar, Chief Executive of Cancer Research UK. This is part of the aim to be the best country in Europe for cancer diagnosis and treatment – and with the world-class research that happens in the UK, alongside the brilliant doctors and nurses on the NHS frontline, progress can be made. A key part of the overall success in fighting cancer has been tackling its causes. Lung cancer is currently the most common cause of cancer death in the UK, and is behind 5% of all hospital admissions - 85% of which are caused by smoking.

Robert and Justin have been actively supporting the work of this Government, which when it came to office in 2010 faced some of the worst cancer mortality rates in Europe. So as one of his first acts as Prime Minister, David Cameron set up the Cancer Drugs Fund, which has already helped more than 60,000 patients get access to the very latest treatments. Over the last four years, three-quarters of a billion pounds has been invested in better treatment. The good news is that now, one and five-year cancer survival rates are at record levels. This means that 12,000 more patients a year will survive cancer for at least five years after diagnosis. The proportion of cancer patients who rate their care as excellent or very good has increased to 88%. But just as care is improving – and more families are kept together longer – the NHS is treating cancer patients in record numbers. Hospitals are seeing 51% more patients with suspected cancer than in 2010. A record 1.5 million diagnostic tests are administered a month, and the number of specialist adult cancer nurses in England is at an all-time high.

ANYTHING SWINDON

Smokers have now fallen to well below 20% of the population, an all-time low. But tobacco still causes 80,000 premature deaths a year that would otherwise be preventable. So further measures to reduce the harm from tobacco – including reducing the attractiveness of smoking to children by introducing standardised packaging – are being taken. The British Heart Foundation was one of many campaign groups who were strongly supportive of this move and said “We are absolutely delighted. The Government has taken another key step towards securing new legislation that will help protect young people from the deadly consequences of smoking”. Speaking after the event, Justin and Robert said: “We will remain focused on reducing the harm cancer causes – and on continuing to improve cancer outcomes.” Please contact us if we can be of any assistance on any local or national issues: Write/Phone: MPs Office, 1 Milton Road, Swindon SN1 5JE - 01793 533393 Email: robert.buckland.mp@parliament.uk justin.tomlinson.mp@parliament.uk Web: www.robertbuckland.co.uk www.justintomlinson.com

Guest Interview

Paul Merton’s Impro Chums Paul Merton, surely the greatest off-the-cuff comedy performer this country has ever known, puts his finger on why doing improvisation is quite such fun. “It’s just doing what we all do as kids – playing endless, imaginative games,” says the immensely popular comedian. “As a child, you don’t need much. I remember as a young boy pushing a toy car up an armchair and suddenly it became a mountain. Kids often unpack a Christmas present and end up playing with the box. Impro is like playtime – the bit of school you liked! If you spark each other off in improvisation, it creates a really good spirit. It’s the spirit of the playground.” And, you will be delighted to hear, you can now enjoy that spirit for yourself as his acclaimed improvisational show, Paul Merton’s Impro Chums, comes to the Wyvern Theatre May 31st . Paul and his Chums - Mike McShane (who has just finished starring in a lauded London production of the Stephen Sondheim musical, Assassins), Lee Simpson, Richard Vranch and Suki Webster – are at the very top of their game. The troupe has been performing to sell-out crowds across the country for more than a decade. As they take suggestions from the audience and turn them into wondrously funny routines, they trigger cascades of tumbling laughter. In a variety of dazzling impro games, the group possess an unparalleled ability to spin

the audience’s propositions into comedy gold. The great thing is that every show is a new adventure. So hurry to book your tickets now. I don’t know what the show will be about, but I can guarantee that it will be hilarious. “People ask me why I do the Comedy Store Players and the Impro Chums, and the answer is that it keeps me match-fit. If I go away on holiday for two weeks, when I come back I find that everyone else has sped up ten per cent. It takes me until the interval to catch up and jump on the bus. There is such a thrill in the notion of playing, say, a Bulgarian lion-tamer trying to explain in fractured Spanish that the yoghurt in the fridge has gone off. It’s a complete delight!” Paul, who last year published a highly successful autobiography, Only When I Laugh, goes on to expand on just why after all these years impro continues to give him such a rush. “I still get the same buzz as ever from doing it. Once the audience’s trust has been won and the laughter has started, you can really start to play. There is a tremendous thrill in seeing something completely unexpected unfold before you. You have taken a shouted-out suggestion, and it has turned into a brilliant scene. You have partly created it, and that’s really satisfying.”

Line Is It Anyway? in 1988. “If nobody’s laughing, you’re doing something wrong. You have to guard against complacency when you’re doing impro. In a learnt piece, you could fall into the trap of reciting your lines as you said them last night, but you can’t do that in impro. Every night is different, and that’s what keeps it so fresh.” But perhaps the best thing of all about impro for Paul is that the performers don’t have to memorise a script. “We don’t have to learn any lines. We can do it all off the top of our heads, and that’s an absolute joy. I’m sorry, Mr Sondheim!”

Buy to let ‘a good investment’ I was interested in an article by Louise Eccles in one of the national newspapers. It talked about the growth in the buy to let market, some saying that it is a bonanza. In the article it listed the best places to buy in the UK, giving the average house price and the annual rental yield that could be achieved. I found the fact that Swindon was not listed as somewhat surprising. The yields given ranged from 6% to 9% and we have regularly been letting properties within the Swindon postcode areas achieving similar yields. When I do yield calculations I factor in all of the potential cost, refurbishment, legal, agency, etc. This enables me to quote any prospective landlord a more realistic figure on what can be achieved, not a vague estimate. At the moment the demand for good quality rental property is very high and void periods are next to nothing. Now, we all know that markets change and prices go down as well as up, also sometimes the odd property does just ‘stick’. However I have to say that, in my opinion, now is the right time to put your foot on the property ladder, if you have ever considered it. Get involved, do some research, speak to some agents and talk with landlords you may already know. Find out what is going on in the Swindon property market. If you are an existing landlord then now might be the time to grow your existing portfolio. As always do your research, let your head, not your heart, influence you decisions. Talk to your agent or contact me for complimentary advice on what to buy and where to buy it. Just as an after though, did anyone give the great 3 bed, in Pinehurst, Swindon, any consideration? Not everyone’s cup of tea, but with the right type of tenants this one could be such a winner.

“Oh when the SCOB, go marching on….” “Oh when the SCOB, go marching in….” is the song currently being sung around the Nationwide Pavilion as the Old Boys maintain their track record of being unbeaten in their Cup campaign and having lost just one in the BB&O Premier League. Earlier this month the SCOB 1st XV saw off Abingdon in the Southern Counties Senior Vase Final and sealed themselves a home draw against the Western Counties Senior Vase winners Withycombe on the

14th March. Victory here would see them crowned SouthWestern Champions and propel them into the Semi-Final of the National Vase against the South East winners. Within the BB&O Premier the 1st XV have maintained a gap between 2nd and the rest of the table that should see them finish at least 2nd in the league with everything to play for when they take on Reading Abbey at home (with Abbey having won the away fixture 25-8). Performances again Phoenix, Abingdon and Hungerford have earned Mathew Allen 1st XV Player of the Month. With

part of the SCOB setup having played centre in the destruction of Supermarine II and full back in the bruising encounter vs. league leaders Wootton Bassett II. Congratulations to both Mat and Jon for being LeadBOSS players of the month.

Mat having become a junior member of the SCOB coaching setup it just goes to show the effect he is having on developing a team and showing the tenacity and spirit needed to compete in the Southern Counties league. As for the 2nd XV, they currently sit 8th within Dorset and Wilts North II having had mixed results against local rivals throughout February. However within the 2nd XV, new boy Jon Chivers has asserted him as a standout player and has been awarded the 2nd XV Player of the Month. Having joined SCOB recently, Jon has instilled himself as an integral

We are very excited here at BSS House Business Centre in Cheney Manor Industrial Estate as we turn 30 years old this year. The building was the first Business Centre in Swindon and currently houses over 70 companies with 18% of them having been here for over 10 years - the longest being Thamesair who have been here for the full 30 years! Many of our first occupiers are still going strong, companies such as Goodenough Removals, TNT Express, Regal Windows and UPS, who are all now successful in the local area. Currently you will find a wide variety of companies here, ranging from leisure, business services and financial companies. We also have a diverse range of retail companies such as florists,

Food Review

Decor 5* Service 4* Food 5*

Would we go again? 100% In January, we were invited to the launch of the Gourmet Burger Kitchen at Swindon’s Regent Circus. This time we invited Chris Hughes Sales Manager of Fish Brothers Peugeot, on entering the restaurant we were welcomed by a very enthusiastic young waitress who once realised our booking directed us to our table. the order process required us standing in a queue at the bar rather than orders taken at the table. But despite this, the service at the till was very pleasant and not enough to upset the flow of our experience.

On viewing the menu, we were overwhelmed with the variety and the choice of burgers, sides and the prospect of a fantastic variety of desserts. Despite a large selection of waiters and waitresses on duty, we were intrigued to the why

PAGE 30

Ian ordered a Blazing Sombrero with a side of blue cheese coleslaw while myself and Chris fancied “The Mighty Burger” and we both

chose a side of “coleslaw” and “Skinny Fries.” The food arrived prompt and although not all together and the ten minute wait for our side orders, we could not have been disturbed in our battle against the burger. All three of us each enjoyed every part of our meal, and we were left feeling satisfyingly full. With absolute no chance of making a choice from the dessert menu, I would have to say this was great value for money. The perfect beginning to a night out whether it be the cinema or a few drinks in town.
