NOTE FROM THE EDITOR’S Welcome to our September issue of “Anything Swindon” In this issue we look at active kids and just some of the great activities locally to keep our children entertained and most importantly active. We visited the team at Swindon Town’s Football in the Community to talk to Clive Maguire about the fantastic opportunities given to children from all walks of life using a variety of sport related activities. By Popular demand, we have more poetry from Gavin Ellis who’s first poem “resistance is useless” was said to be inspiring and heartwarming by many readers. We have an interview with Canadian Katherine Ryan ahead of her “Glam Role Model” Tour due to hit Swindon’s Art Centre 11th October. We have been overwhelmed by the response from readers, advertisers and local councillors who all agree that central Swindon is crying out for a platform that delivers informative readable content. The great news is we are not going anywhere and through demand we have plans to make “Anything Swindon” a thicker magazine with an extra 8 pages before Christmas. You will see when you read through this issue that like the August Edition we have created a balance of content ensuring our readers have informative content and a selection of services and business of which we feel is important to future of “Anything Swindon.” With 21’000 magazines printed and delivered to homes throughout Central Swindon every month we know those that read it will enjoy some part of what we have provided, and we will continue to grow the magazine with your help, Anything Swindon is your community Magazine, and we offer it to you as a platform to shout about success and talk about new projects that you are involved in, Share your stories with us and let us share them with an estimated up to 50’000 readers every month. One of the popular courses is the Holiday Football Courses for all abilities that offer opportunities to boys and girls from ages 5 to 15 years. The Trust, with the support of the local partners, continue to strive and achieve their maximum potential by engaging with over 30,000 participants on an annual basis. One of the popular courses is the Holiday Football Courses for all abilities that offer opportunities to boys and girls from ages 5 to 15 years. The weeks run over three to four days, with the main course in operation on the first three days and an optional day on the fourth. There are three themes to the Development Weeks; Mainstream, Goalkeepers only and Girls only weeks.

Swindon Town Football in the community trust (STFiTC) is just one of 72 League Clubs affiliated to the Football League Community Trust, delivering sporting and social opportunities to people within their communities. The Swindon Town programme was formed in 1991, under the guidance of the Football League Trust they deliver to meet the five key themes of Sports Participation, Health and Education, Social Inclusion and the Environment. STFiTC community development managers Clive Maguire and Jon Holloway are responsible for the running of the trust along with the help of their fellow trustees. They also have a fantastic team to support them; this enables them to run the many courses they provide in the local community. Many of you may have heard of the STFiTC and may even have PAGE 4

children or family members that attend the regular Holiday Development weeks held at Swindon Town Football Club and various locations around Wiltshire. STFiTC delivers football and Multi Sports based programmes within Swindon and the county of Wiltshire. The Social Inclusion and Disability Programmes are two pieces of the jigsaw which contributes to the whole picture, encompassing people within their local professional football club.

The Development weeks are run at various locations, with the main one being staged at Swindon Town Football Club, with the coaching programme being performed at the local St Joseph’s Catholic College. The weeks are also available at places such as Marlborough, Kingston Bagpuize, Chippenham, Lambourn and Ashton Keynes.

Lee Power, Swindon Town Football Club Chairman states, “The Community Charitable Trust is a crucial part of Swindon Town Football Club. With them portraying a positive and proactive image within the local area, offering opportunities for people to have a positive experience within the full range of programmes on offer.”

Main Feature Phoenix Taekwondo – Promoting an active lifestyle

Many children are too involved in sedentary activities, such as watching TV or playing video games, and with childhood obesity on the increase, this time needs to be reduced and replaced with more physical activity. The physical practice of martial arts incorporates many different aspects of fitness including strength training, cardiovascular conditioning, and becoming more agile, coordinated and in control of your body. Martial arts aren’t just about physical prowess – it’s also about training the mind and spirit, learning skills that can also be used in other areas of life, such as better concentration and reasoning skills, vital for academic success. We make a commitment to each and every one of our students to help them reach their potential, not just in their training, but also in life. We foster an environment that encourages constructive behaviour, and promotes a strong sense of virtues like self-control, self-discipline and self-respect. In both our Little Kickers programme for 4-7 year olds, and in our Family Taekwondo programme for seven years to adult, we work with all students to help them achieve what they want from their training. Phoenix Taekwondo also offers Ladies Only Kick-Fit classes (non-contact kickboxing for ladies of all fitness levels and abilities) as well as Personal Training.

Pets

Pet Dentistry Looking in your own dog or cat’s mouth might not be the easiest of tasks, but may reveal a horrendous surprise. That smelly kiss which greets you every morning could be the only indication of long-term mouth disease that has repercussions on the rest of the body. Big chunks of tartar, inflamed / bleeding gums and holes in the teeth are all signs of an ideal breeding ground for potent bacteria. These bacteria can very easily get into the blood stream through the inflamed gums and travel round the body. They can attack the heart, kidneys and liver causing damage, and in some cases triggering disease. A common thought is that if the animal is still eating then they cannot have a major problem. This is a misconception as a dog/cat’s drive to eat is very strong and they adapt by eating on one side, more slowly or avoiding hard biscuits and chews.

Often after a procedure owners report how eager their pet is to eat, despite healing gums, as their mouth is pain free. With modern anaesthetics we are able to treat much older animals than previously, and relieving the constant mouth discomfort can bring many animals in their twilight years a new lease of life.

If you need any further information please contact your local vet or get your pet in for a dental check, most surgeries offer this Free of Charge at one of their Nurse Clinics.

Councillor Updates Old Town Clean Up: As a local councillor it is great to get involved with the community. I am looking forward to helping again with the Piper’s Area Residents’ Association Autumn Tidy Up on Sunday 5 October, 2-4pm. This is a popular event which has made a difference to the Old Town area. Commonweal School: Commonweal 6th Form opens in September. It is great that students will have the opportunity to further their education in Old Town in a new building with a wide range of subjects and brilliant teaching staff. I wish all the students every success. Local Community News

Anne Snelgrove fights for Children Centres over Carparks As a big supporter of Swindon’s Children’s Centres, I’ve served on several governing boards and done lots of voluntary work with parents. Centres work with mums, dads and toddlers - I’ve seen the transformation they make to people’s lives and I’m worried by the decision of Swindon Borough Council to close half our centres. Earlier this year, Swindon Borough Council cut £390,000 from our Children’s Centres, resulting in reduced service, but a few weeks ago the council announced they were planning to cut another £770,000. This will close seven centres, including Croft in Old Town and Robert le Kyng in Central Swindon. The remaining centres, including Penhill and Pinehurst, Gorse Hill and Drove, will cover a huge area and have many more families to look after.

are fit and healthy to helping them socialise with other children. Studies have shown that children who regularly attend a Children’s Centre are more likely to be ready to learn when they start primary school. I’m fighting these cuts, as I believe the council has its priorities wrong when it comes to spending money. If you also want to keep all our Children’s Centres, please let the council know by responding to the consultation available at www.swindon.gov.uk/childrenscentres which closes on 3 October.

As a former teacher, I am concerned about the effect it will have on children as there’s been a steady rise in achievement since the first centres opened 15 years ago. Children’s Centres help parents in many ways, from making sure infants

Health and Beauty

“Amazing-Lea” With my directions in my hand, I knock on the open door to Amazing –Lea for my beauty treatment, not knowing what to expect. I am greeted by Leanne, who owns and works from a log cabin at the bottom of her garden. The first thing that strikes me is the aroma in the cabin. Leanne tells me she is currently burning her favorite essential oil, lemongrass. I am offered a drink and after some chit chat Leanne asks me to fill in the relevant forms for my treatment It was when Leanne’s youngest child started school and whilst working as a child minder She thought maybe it was time to do something new. After chatting to local mums about what they would like to see and would be likely use, the idea of beauty treatments came about. Leanne trained at the Wiltshire School Of Beauty as this meant she could still child mind and be there to collect her children from school. She tells me that her children are and always will be her main focus; work has to fit around them not vice versa!

Leanne has used the local community to build her business, as she tells me it was her best friend who came up with the name, her neighbours who helped advise on how to insulate, looked after the children whilst she resourced materials. Her partner painted, and her children helped pick out the crystals that adorn the cabin. ANYTHING SWINDON

Mixing Beauty With

Relaxation

From the back of the cabin, which is accessed by the alleyway of Lansdown Rd you only know it is there because of the black board with the ‘special offer of the day’ advertised. Once inside it’s a different matter. Tea lights twinkle; music plays and there is just a relaxed, comforting feel to this place. Leanne’s passion is clear to see when she explains that she wanted to mix holistic with beauty so that this place leaves you feeling glamorous as well as relaxed. A purpose built cabin, which you can tell has been lovingly put together; There are rich aubergine colours on the wall, her qualifications, insurance documents & beauty guild membership are clear to see, crystals, Buddhas and sumptuous fabrics surround you. Leanne tells me how she feels incredibly grateful for all the support she has received from friends, neighbours, teaching assistants, mums and daughters who have all given her the chance to show her skills. She plans to offer bridal & prom packages, little miss nail parties, manicure parties for hens with a free bottle of bubbly for the bride to be. WWW.ANYTHINGSWINDON.CO.UK

This is a one stop shop as Leanne offers Spray tanning, waxing, threading, manicures, pedicures, shellac, gel polish, semi-permanent eyelash extensions and eyelash & brow tinting. Leanne then advises me she is studying anatomy & physiology of the body as she wants to provide holistic treatments in the form of body massages, Indian head massages and Reiki in the future. As a mum to three small children Leanne understands how hard it is to juggle work with parenting, like many mums her partner works long hours and so her work really does have to fit round the children and their school holidays! Leanne wants to show her children if mum can be her own boss so can you if you work hard and just believe in yourself. Who knows this little cabin may turn into a family empire? Now its time to lay back and relax, pamper time! Leanne is on facebook: Amazinglea W: www.amazinglea.co.uk

South Marston Wedding Reviews

My husband and I got married at the Mercure South Marston Hotel and Spa in September 2013; we had a wedding for 96 people I think in the end - it was a fantastic day and one we will both remember for life. Our wedding was arranged by the wedding co-ordinator Kellie, who did everything I asked for and knew and had fantastic knowledge and rapport with our suppliers like chair covers (Inspired occasions) flowers The little flower company, etc. If I were to get married again I would always go and see her she relaxed me, made me feel like an individual and made our wedding work a dream and they way we individualised it. The staff at South Marston made us, and our guests at home any request from us whether it be little or large they took and did without question they really couldn’t do any more for us. The catering on our day we had a three-course lunch Kellie along with the restaurant staff made the menu into what we wanted. I also had quests that had allergies, and some were unable to eat gluten - so this wasn’t a problem either she arranged for them to have different gravy and different deserts as well. The hotel in general I think is lovely its close enough to the Swindon town but its also in the countryside - so you get best of both worlds. The set up of the hotel for the ceremony and the wedding breakfast was just beautiful - I got married in the restaurant - the beams on the ceilings make the room so beautiful and where I had the wedding breakfast the set of the room was utterly beautiful. Kellie and Flo worked alongside Inspired Occasions and the wonderful florist and between the four of them it was just stunning. Good luck to the future brides out there - I hope your wedding day is as good as mine for you and I know even on half of that basis you will have the day of your dreams. By Charlotte Randall-Bohnerton, May 2014

I got married at The Mercure Hotel, 10th May 2014. Undoubtedly the best day of my life so far!! From the minute, I arrived the day before the staff couldn’t have been friendlier and more accommodating. They were all so kind and helped with every last detail to make our day so special, which they did. The whole day ran like clockwork. The food was amazing. Kellie Jones, the wedding planner at The Mercure, was the best. Kellie ensured the bride was every ones priority and made me feel so special. The staff ensured everything was how we wanted and the decorations, tables looked amazing! If anyone is due to get married, I would recommend this venue 100%!! Not a single bad thing happened on our wedding day and I’m sure its down to the amazing kind, helpful staff that made it so great! Thanks again. From Mrs Cozens.

Interview

Katherine Ryan’s UK TOUR 2014 Syndicated Interview by Brian Donaldson Ryan’s career choices finally took her to the UK, a wide open land of opportunity for comedians. She gained a reputation on the circuit for someone whose onstage persona was one of wide-eyed innocence being broken apart by a spiky edge, a style that can be traced back to her early public appearances in pageants. “Even in the talent round, I’d do this weird thing that nobody understood or I’d always want to sing a man’s song or do a funny sketch. I always had this different way of presenting information; I guess.” With Katherine Ryan’s new touring show, Glam Role Model, her audiences can be assured that they will encounter a comedian who enjoys healthy debate. With many stand-ups, you feel that they’ve arrived on stage armed with all the solutions to every problem in the world and no chance that they’ll be deflected from their chosen course of opinion. The UKbased, Canada-born comic and actress is just a different breed altogether. “I’m not preachy in any way, I don’t even pretend to have all the answers, and I make a lot of mistakes myself,” she adds “Back home we didn’t have glamour models; we had dirty magazines and then we had mainstream actresses and presenters. Here, that line is so blurred, and glamour models are put in such positions where they are sold as personalities, but their entire personality is just about getting naked or being drunk in the Big Brother house.” PAGE 22

This relentless pursuit of celebrityhood that arrived with the explosion of reality TV and the new kind of talent show carries its own inevitable dark side, a side effect to fame that Ryan has been determined to protect herself from. “People don’t realise that putting yourself out there, whether it’s like the most popular girl at school or the weirdo (and I have been both), makes you very vulnerable and more likely that people will attack you in some way. I’m so lucky because I actually take comfort in people not liking me; I think it’s lovely that we all like different things? When people come after me on Twitter, its fine: why would I expect everyone to like me? I do think it’s a bit weird that you would go out of your way to tell me how much you don’t like me, though.” What of her tour poster, where she is glam’ed up and enjoying a can (or three) of what looks like an especially strong brand of lager.

This looks like Ryan talking about the greater theme of rampant alcohol abuse in this country, particularly among young women. “I don’t understand people saying oh I was so sick, I missed my entire weekend.” Well, why are you going to do that again? Canadians think that they drink: there’s a culture of hockey, hunting, beer beer beer! But over here, it’s nothing I’ve ever seen in my life, and it’s really not cute. Specifically it’s something I’ve noticed with young girls. You see what is presented in the media; these girls have beautiful hair, but it’s fake and beautiful lips but they’re fake; eyelashes: fake; nails: fake, tans: fake. They’re putting all this stuff on the outside and on the inside they’re drinking a lot and eating fried chicken after school on the bus. “A performer with a distinctive comic voice The Telegraph August 2012” I just have a different view towards wellness, and your life is so much happier if you look after yourself. But, you know, I’m not a nun. I love when things like the Olympics come round and you see someone like Jessica Ennis, and you think “yes, now that’s a role model.”

Food Review

The Lalbagh has a contemporary and stylish look, and this neatly sums up the all-round appeal of this highly regarded Indian restaurant. the taste was perfect. The main course came along with perfect timing, my Wife’s meal came out first and the smell from the fried onions and peppers that adorned the chicken tikka was quite something.

5/5 Stars for ambience and décor 5/5 Stars for menu choice 5/5 For Starter 4.8/5 For main meal 5/5 Stars for Service In the first issue, we reviewed and visited one of Swindons newest restaurants The Asiana. This month we decided that we had sampled what Swindon had to offer that was new, now we decided to sample the delights available at an old favourite, The Lalbagh in Rodbourne. Having just finished a major refurbishment the inside and outside of The Lalbagh has a contemporary and stylish look, and this neatly sums up the all-round appeal of this highly regarded Indian restaurant. Being one of Swindons most-established Indian restaurants, The lalbagh opened its doors in 1997 and is managed by Mr Amin. Mr Amin prides himself on offering only the best food and service available. The lalbagh is the only Indian restaurant in Swindon to be a member of the ‘Eat with Confidence’ Scheme and requires a rating of five under the National Food Hygiene Rating Scheme. Upon arrival, my wife and I were greeted by one of the friendly waiters, whilst being shown to our table we were impressed by the modern and contemporary décor and even more impressed by the pleasant aromas emanating from the kitchen.

ANYTHING SWINDON

The menu had all the favourites you would come to expect in most Indian restaurants, along with some that I have not heard of before; this may take a while. Whilst we carefully selected our starter, we had a selection of Popadoms and pickles; the lime pickle tasted fresh and had a delightful kick.

After a while we had decided, My wife was to try the Shami Kebab for a starter followed by Chicken Locknu. Being a typical man, I took a little longer to choose and even changed my choice about five times before deciding on a great favourite Mulligatawny soup followed by Lamb Korai. The starters arrived in a short time, and the Shami kebab smelt superb and it arrived wrapped in an omelette, and tasted great. The Mulligatawny soup thankfully was not one of those versions that were watery and clear; it had a lovely texture to it, lovely lentils, sweet onion and the fresh coriander ensured WWW.ANYTHINGSWINDON.CO.UK

My main course, Lamb korai arrived on a hot skillet and still sizzling away whilst our rice and nan breads arrived a few seconds later. There was nothing to fault the food in any way what so ever, if I were to point out any negative then it would be the slight charring on the nan bread, a second or two less and it would have been perfect. We ended our meal with a choice from the sweet menu, ok I ended my meal with a choice from the sweet menu followed by the obligatory hot towel and chocolate. All in all and very lovely meal, the restaurant for a Monday evening was busy but not over busy, and the customer service was second to none. Whilst my wife and I have dined at most of the Indian restaurants in Swindon, the Lalbagh seems to get all the ticks in the box. If you’re looking for a lovely meal, in a great venue and served by some of the friendliest people we met then look no further than The Lalbagh in Rodbourne. 171 Rodbourne Rd, Swindon SN2 2AY Tel: 01793 535511 www. lalbaghswindon.co.uk Open Daily and Bank Holidays 12 noon-2.30pm 6pm-11.30pm
