Swindon’s cancer-surviving Bishop backs Brighter Futures’ Ride for Radiotherapy fundraising event. “I’m hoping to be able to take part in Ride for Radiotherapy – it’s such a great idea and an opportunity for riders to cycle through the beautiful countryside whilst raising money for Brighter Futures.” After successfully completing treatment for cancer last year, Bishop Lee, a member of the Swindon Road Club, raised £13,000 for community work in Uganda by riding in 13 days from John O’Groats to Land’s End – a 959 -mile journey.
A difficult journey The Bishop of Swindon, Lee Rayfield, is encouraging cyclists to saddle up for bike rides through scenic Wiltshire in aid of Brighter Futures’ £2.9m Radiotherapy Appeal. Brighter Futures, Great Western Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust’s charity, has organised Ride for Radiotherapy, where cyclists can raise sponsorship and ride on Sunday 20 September a 30-mile, 70-mile or 100-mile route. Bishop Lee, who underwent chemotherapy at Swindon’s Great Western Hospital (GWH) and then radiotherapy at Oxford’s Churchill Hospital 18 months ago to treat Hodgkin lymphoma, is planning, schedule permitting, to take part.
Bringing radiotherapy to GWH The appeal is part of a plan to bring radiotherapy treatment to GWH, so local cancer patients do not have to travel to Oxford for treatment, as many do now. Money raised would help buy two linear accelerators, the equipment which delivers radiotherapy. The 70-mile bike ride is the same distance a patient going to Oxford from Swindon has to cover daily for radiotherapy treatment.
A fantastic cause Bishop Lee, a keen cyclist who rides at least 35 miles a week, said: “The Radiotherapy Appeal is a fantastic cause and what it will buy will greatly help the people of Swindon and Wiltshire. PAGE 4
The journey to Oxford which many Wiltshire cancer patients currently undertake on a daily basis for up to seven weeks is one that Bishop Lee knows only too well. “I only had to go for two weeks for my treatment and was fortunate enough to be able to drive myself mostly”, Bishop Lee, 59, said. “I know others have had to rely on friends, family or NHS transport to get themselves to Oxford for weeks on end, having to go to enormous lengths to receive treatment. “I regularly meet people through my work who have cancer or have a family member or friend who do – it is something that troubles many people and I know first-hand what it is like. “I know that the appeal has got off to a strong start and has already raised more than £100,000 and I really hope that the £2.9m target can be achieved.”

Brighter Futures Feature
Get involved Jennifer Green, Brighter Futures’ Head of Fundraising, said: “We want Wiltshire’s roads to be awash with Brighter Futures fundraising cyclists on Sunday 20 September – Ride for Radiotherapy will be such a fun event and I’m sure hundreds of riders will get involved. “We have organised three routes – 30 miles, 70 miles and 100 miles, so there’s something for everyone, whether you want to take a more leisurely ride or really challenge yourself by taking on the 100-mile journey. They’ll all take in the beautiful Wiltshire countryside and hopefully we’ll get a beautiful day for it. “Places are limited so I’d encourage those who are interested to get in touch as soon as possible to avoid disappointment.”
People can sign up for Ride for Radiotherapy by registering online: www.entrycentral.com/rideforradiotherapy or by contacting the Brighter Futures fundraising team on 01793 605631 or via our email address fundraising@gwh.nhs.uk.

Bird-like crop circle near Swindon generates cash for Brighter Futures’ Radiotherapy Appeal A bird-like crop circle which has appeared in a wheat field at a farm near Swindon is being used to raise money for Brighter Futures’ £2.9m Radiotherapy Appeal. Adults are asked to donate £3 to view around the huge and unexplained crop formation at Weir Farm, Broad Hinton, with all proceeds going to helping bring vital life-saving radiotherapy treatment for cancer patients to Swindon’s Great Western Hospital (GWH). Presently many local patients have to travel to the Churchill Hospital in Oxford on a daily basis for up to seven weeks for radiotherapy treatment, as no such facility is available locally. Great Western Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and Oxford University Hospitals NHS Trust are working together to bring a unit to GWH and, subject to national approval, treatment should be available in 2017. Farmer James Hussey has teamed up with longtime crop circle researcher Paul Jacobs – who is temporarily living in a camper van by the circle which doubles up as crop circle information centre – to offer passers-by the chance to delve into the mysterious creation, which has been likened to the Egyptian Sun God Horus on social media. Mr Hussey, 57, who lost his wife Gill to cancer last year, said the crop circle’s location – metres away from the Ridgeway at Uffcott Down near Barbury Castle – had helped attract interested walkers, raising more than £5,000 so far. Jennifer Green, Brighter Futures’ Head of Fundraising, said: “It is absolutely fantastic what James and Paul are doing for our Radiotherapy Appeal – I have been up to see the crop circle and it really is very impressive. “This is another brilliant example of an innovative way to raise money being used to help bring lifesaving treatment to Swindon.” How can people donate to the appeal? Anything Swindons Graham & Ian Slimming World Diary update # 3 of 3 This month’s slimming world diary saw the end of our 12week plan and with a combined weight loss of 52 pounds we have plenty to celebrate.
meal. I would always reach for a bag of crisps and a couple of biscuits in the evening to dip in a cup of tea with full-fat milk and two sugars.
If you had told me six months ago I would be swapping my two sugars for a sweetener I would have probably looked at you like you had lost the plot.
We are now both feeling healthier and with the gym work we are also feeling a lot fitter because of it. Slimming World gave us the foundations to move forward after our membership period, but it does not need to stop there.
Slimming world is all about changing your approach to meal times. Not once has the slimming world plan told me I can’t eat crisps and biscuits. It does however allow you to eat exciting things with the use of your allocated syns. As mentioned in lasts months diary one portion of chips is the equivalent of ten syns thats half of a man’s daily syns (approx 20 for a man and 15 for a woman).
The truth is that to lose weight you need willpower and without it I would still be sitting here one stone heavier plus some more. Ian has enjoyed preparing his meals for his wife and son using recipes from the Slimming World recipe collection; he has added his favourite recipe on the opposite page.
Despite the huge loss, we have decided to continue with our group and push further our loss while aiming for new targets. Eating for me has always been about convenience and despite sharing a dinner table with a vegetarian dance teacher who insists on fresh veg with every
I now swap biscuits and crisps for yoghurt and blueberries in the evening, while now enjoying tea with one sweetener.
Next month we will feature some before and after pictures to show our loss of weight visually, you can decide for yourself if we have done well.

Drove Pets Update • Control weight An overweight dog puts a lot of extra strain on his joints. Weight reduction by increasing exercise is not recommended with an arthritic dog so a calorie controlled diet should be fed. Once the excess weight has gone you should see a marked difference in your dog’s mobility.
• Gentle exercise
Vet Column by Drove Veterinary Hospital
Arthritis and Degenerative joint disease Dogs rely on their legs and joints to maintain mobility. They are naturally athletic animals and eventually this activity can take its toll. Many older dogs have arthritis but because they can not tell us they are in pain, it is often seen only as stiffness. Your dog may be reluctant to jump down from the car. He may limp at the beginning of a walk or show stiffness when getting out of his basket in the morning. Some dogs with arthritis are less interested in play and can be less tolerant towards children or other dogs. Licking or chewing at joints can also be a sign of pain. Although some wear and tear is inevitable, there are many products available that can slow down the progress of the disease and promote healing of the cartilage.
Things you can do to help your dog! • Speak to your veterinary surgeon There are many products available to relieve painful joints. Your vet may prescribe NSAIDs (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) which will reduce pain and stiffness. ANYTHING SWINDON
Regular, gentle exercise will help maintain mobility, keep your dog from stiffening up and ensure he enjoys life. Avoid occasional energetic exercise or rough play which will simply cause pain afterwards.
• Supplements Nutritional joint supplements can be given to help joint function. Your vet will recommend a suitable product.
• Alternative therapies Acupuncture can have a pain relieving effect. It also has a beneficial effect on the immune system, increasing ability to fight disease and giving a whole body improvement. Hydrotherapy allows careful controlled swimming as a low impact form of exercise. It improves fitness and builds muscle mass which helps support joints.
• Physiotherapy Massage and physiotherapy can warm up the muscles before and after exercise. There are a number of things that can be done to aid a dog with arthritis. Your veterinary surgeon or nurse can offer regular checks and advice to help you give your dog a greater quality of life.

Wyvern Interview
Oscar Wilde’s The Importance of Being Earnest A trivial comedy for serious people’ Full casting has now been announced for The Bunbury Company of Players production of Oscar Wilde’s much loved and witty masterpiece THE IMPORTANCE OF BEING EARNEST, which will embark on a first class regional tour from Autumn this year. The play will be on at Wyvern Theatre from Tue 27 to Sat 31 October.
Last Year’s Pantomime Star Nigel Havers, said: “This production is very close to my heart and we had a ball doing it in the West End last summer. I’m thrilled we get to do it all again and hope audiences in Swindon will laugh and enjoy watching our twist on Oscar’s brilliant play as much as we enjoy performing it.”
Rosalind Ayres (Titanic, Outnumbered, New Tricks), Nigel Havers (Chariots of Fire, Downton Abbey, Coronation Street), Martin Jarvis (Endeavour, Just William, Titanic), Christine Kavanagh (Man and Superman, Vera, Manchild), and Siân Phillips (Marlene, The Age of Innocence, Cabaret) will reunite as The Bunbury Company of Players, an extremely experienced cast of serious comedic actors, to reprise their roles as Miss Prism, Algernon Moncrieff, John Worthing J.P. Cecily Cardew and Lady Bracknell from the West End. They will be joined by Nigel Anthony (Tonight at 8.30, Dearest Nancy, Darling Evelyn, The Shepherd) in the roles of Lane and Merriman, with Carmen du Sautoy (The Man with the Golden Gun, Poor Little Rich Girl, Lost Empires) as Gwendolyn Fairfax, David Shaw-Parker (McQueen, Uncle Vanya, The Muppet’s Christmas Carol) as Rev Canon Chasuble. Dubbed by Wilde ‘a trivial comedy for serious people’, the production delivers an entirely faithful, but completely unique, setting to one of the greatest theatrical comedies. Introducing Wide’s genius afresh to a new audience, acclaimed director Lucy Bailey, together with comic novelist, Simon Brett, and the innovative theatre designer William Dudley have created a delightful new context for the play which enchanted audiences across the UK last year.
The Importance of Being Earnest elegantly lampoons the hypocrisies of Victorian society and opens as two bachelors, the dependable, John Worthing, J.P. (Martin Jarvis) and upper class playboy Algernon Moncrieff (Nigel Havers), feel compelled to create different identities in order to pursue two eligible ladies Cecily Cardew (Christine Kavanagh) and Gwendolyn Fairfax (Carmen du Sautoy). The hilarious misadventures which result from their subterfuge; their brushes with the redoubtable Lady Bracknell (Siân Phillips) and the uptight Miss Prism (Rosalind Ayres) result in a plot that twists and fizzles with some of the finest dialogue to be found in theatre. The Importance of Being Earnest is being produced by Rupert Gavin for Incidental Colman as a Bunbury Company of Players presentation.

Councillor Updates Rodbourne Cheney Ward Councillor - Des Moffatt I went last Thursday for Bob and Gina’s last night in charge of the Southbrook Pub. My colleagues and I are sad that an era has ended but we do accept that Bob and Gina deserve their retirement. Their support for the community has been exemplary for the past 27 years, always helping but never a soft touch. Running a pub as a community pub is never easy and it takes an inner strength. Bob has always seen off the trouble makers and that was important in maintaining the atmosphere of safety and friendliness. Telling people they have had enough and stopping people driving when they might be over the limit was something Bob and Gina always did. “Give me the keys, the car will be safe here, pick it up tomorrow”. We shall miss them, may they have a long and happy retirement. Nothing goes on forever, we welcome the new owners and landlord and wish them well. Des Moffatt: 07709 066707 Email: fendessy@yahoo.co.uk Surgery details: First Thursday of every month in Moredon Library, 2 pm. Second Wednesday of every month in Western Community Centre, Somerset Road, 6 pm.
Old Town & East Wichel Councillor - Nadine Watts Hesketh Crescent Play Area Refurbishment – Work should start on site on 28 September. We are aiming for the refurbishment’s completion by mid-November. It will be great to have a new play area here. Corn Exchange – There have been some delays getting the legal agreements for the Corn Exchange development in place. I have been told the start date for building work will now be late 2016 which would see it opening by Christmas 2018. Dewell Mews - Additional double yellow lines are now down in Dewell Mews following requests from local residents. Townsend House - A planning application has been submitted for the currently derelict Townsend House on Bath Road to be redeveloped in to 15 one and two-bedroom apartments for key workers (employees who work in essential public services). The next Locality Meeting is on Monday 5 October at 7pm at CommunityCentre@ChristChurch, where local residents will have a chance to ask questions of their councillors. Hope to see you there. Please don’t hesitate to contact me if you have any local concerns or issues.

Mp Updates Justin Tomlinson MP Joins Swindon Vixens Disability Netball Club At Dorcan Rec Many people will know that I am hugely passionate about sport. Whether you are playing in the back garden or representing your country on the world stage - sports has the power to captivate, excite and engage. It can inspire potential, create ambition and bring people together. Sport can also, as we witnessed with the 2012 London Olympics, bring a country together as one and inspire a generation. With the Paralympics, we saw sport break through social barriers and change the public’s perception of people with disabilities. I visit many local clubs who offer fantastic opportunities to local residents in terms of promoting both physical and mental well-being. All of these clubs rely on the hard work and dedication of loyal volunteers who are passionate about sharing the enjoyment of sport. But often clubs find themselves experiencing trouble when it comes to funding. Whether it’s hiring pitches, maintaining a clubhouse or purchasing equipment; playing sport can be pricey. That’s why I am keen to help local clubs apply for funding through my MPs office. Whether it’s offering advice on funding streams, or helping to fill in the forms – my office is here to help! Anybody running a club, playing for a club or even knows somebody involved with a local club, should get in touch with my office using the details below. Sport is an exceptionally important part of our local community and vital to both our physical and mental well-being. Here in Swindon, we have a rich variety on offer. I want to ensure that this remains and that everybody can experience the enjoyment of sport – regardless of age, gender, ability or background. Robert buckland Update It’s nearly the end of the Parliamentary Recess period, which means that the House of Commons’ sittings will resume shortly. The Recess is often wrongly described as a “holiday”, but the reality for me and most MPs is that we carry on working in our constituencies, making visits to organisations and meeting residents. This summer, as usual, I have been very busy in Swindon carrying out my responsibilities whilst also being able to see a bit more of my family. As part of my Half Marathon preparation, it is also great to be able to enjoy areas like the Town Gardens and Croft Woods, albeit at a running pace! I know that Claire and Brian have also been working hard to continue improving Old Town for local residents. Funding for Christmas lights between Regent Circus and Old Town has already been secured, and the improved Hesketh Crescent play area is on schedule to be completed by the end of this year. They’ll be updates delivered throughout Old Town with more ward news in the coming weeks. As ever, I’m hosting regular advice surgeries, including joint surgeries with Claire and Brian, in my constituency office and other venues across Swindon. I’ve been making the most of the sunshine in the last few weeks by arranging outdoor surgeries when I can! Advice for small businesses
What expenses can I claim through my Company on top of mileage? When staying away overnight, you can claim for the costs of accommodation. You can also claim Incidental Overnight Expenses, not necessarily for business but items such as toothpaste, phone calls to family etc. (receipts not needed), up to £5 per night in the UK and £10 outside the UK. -When staying with friends/family, claim for a meal, a gift, or a contribution to bills. Claim the actual amount and keep receipts if possible. -Claim for property rental, utilities and Council Tax. Site costs for staying away in your own caravan. A very large subject but it’s worth checking http:// www.hmrc.gov.uk/manuals/eimanual/ eim30050.htm Lorraine Crocker - Expenses Advisor AMS Accountancy Ltd.
