Twelve months of the Anything Swindon magazine In early 2014 myself and Ian discussed the idea of creating a fresh new magazine for Central Swindon, filling the gap between The Swindon Link in North and West Swindon and The Handy Mag in East Swindon. Anything Swindon was born to become a fresh platform for local businesses to promote their services while giving our readers a variety of local and informative content. Our early plans were to print just 10’000 copies delivering directly to areas such as Upper Stratton, Lower Stratton and Old Town. After speaking with residents and researching the need for this type of platform throughout Central Swindon we soon realised that there are many areas of Swindon that do not receive a free publication.

We now distribute the Anything Swindon Magazine to 25’000 properties every month, including the Town Centre, Rodbourne, Gorse Hill Old Walcott. And more recently we have added areas such as Covingham, Coleview and Nythe to that list. Every month we create a fair balance between advertising and informative content to ensure our advertisers are achieving the very best return on their investment. Slimming World Update

Anything Swindons Graham & Ian Slimming World Diary update # 2 of 3 This month’s Slimming World diary included mixed emotions with challenges such as a Stag do, New Gym routines and a maintain on the scales. Myself and Ian have thrown ourselves head first into our Slimming World 12 week challenge, sacrificing Sugar for sweeteners and chips and curry sauce for poached eggs on plain toast for our lunch in the office. Now 8 weeks in we have seen dramatic change in both our appearance and our overall fitness and have achieved a huge 40lb weight loss between us, and it really hasn’t been as hard as we thought it would be.

The great thing about the Slimming World plan is that you can still eat the foods that you love, in the form of Syns. A Slimming World term for treats, naughty things, indulgences etc. Syns is shorthand for synergy – Slimming World believes it’s the synergy between the three components of the plan, ie. Free Foods, Healthy Extras and Syns, that makes Food Optimising effective at enabling weight loss. Certain treats have a value in syns for example 1 sugar = 1 syn or if you are not a tea drinker and prefer alcohol, a large glass of wine = 6 syns with a pint of lager = 10 syns.

So here is the hard part, the average allowance for the amount of syns you can use daily are 15 for a lady and 20 for a man, so imagine my fear when attending my weekly weigh in following 3 nights away on a stag do at the beginning of July. As long as you stick to plan and make a few slight changes to your normal routine weight loss is really easy with Slimming World, I have now lost 12lb in 8 weeks with Ian losing an impressive 28lb.

August 2015 Wellness Screening As cats and dogs get older, they become more prone to certain conditions, and they may appear well despite underlying disease. So, it is worthwhile taking them to your vet for routine ‘wellness’ examinations more frequently than you would a younger pet. It is easy to write-off changes in older pets as ‘just old age’. However, subtle changes can often be symptomatic of a disease that can be treated, for example inactivity may be associated with chronic pain or arthritis, bad breath and reduced appetite can be indicative of dental disease, increased thirst may be related to kidney disease, periods of confusion or disorientation can be indicative of cognitive decline, early morning stiffness may be due to arthritis, and increased appetite (specifically in cats) can be indicative of hyperthyroidism.

kidney disease; hyper-thyroidism; heart disease; liver disease; chronic pain and arthritis; cognitive decline; dental disease; cancer.

Many cats and dogs present on an annual basis for their vaccination booster, and they will always receive a general health check at the same time. However, this may still be too infrequent to allow early detection of problemsbringing your ‘senior’ cat or dog along to their vet for a routine ‘wellness’ examination every six months is preferable. These more frequent visits are warranted because: •

health changes can occur quickly- cats and dogs age more quickly than humans;

•

underlying diseases can be identified before they become symptomatic;

•

specific concerns that you may have can be addressed;

•

diet and routine care (such as flea treatment and worming) can be discussed;

•

weight loss or gain can be detected and addressed earlier.

By detecting diseases earlier, they are often easier to manage, and this will minimise the impact on your pet’s quality-of-life. Earlier detection usually has the benefit of being less costly, and more successful, than treatment of a crisis that could have been averted. Sometimes a patient will only need a routine clinical examination at these ‘wellness’ checks. Others may benefit from urine or blood screening (for example, to check kidney function) or other tests such as blood pressure measurement. Each patient varies, depending on species and breed, but in general patients are considered as ‘senior’ from around 7-9 years of age. The specific requirements can be discussed with your vet and tailored to your pet. I welcome the news that the convenience store in East Wichel has been granted a premises licence. Many of the residents in East Wichel cannot wait for the new shop to open. They are keen to be able to walk to a local shop to buy milk or bread. It is a much awaited shop that will benefit the community. It was good to attend the Fraud and Scams Awareness event at Barclays Old Town on 2 July. The focus was on warnings about scams, rogue traders and promoting Buy with confidence. It is great to see that the recently completed play area in Angel Ridge is now very popular and well used by residents. • Claire and Brian have petitioned the Cabinet Member to investigate with officers whether additional street parking can be identified in East Wichel before a decision is made to introduce a residential parking scheme. • The refurbishment and redevelopment of the Corn Exchange will be a step closer when a development agreement is signed off on behalf of the property owner and Swindon Borough Council. • The replacement of the bridge in the Old Town Gardens is now in the design phase and will be installed in the coming months. • Old town has had a spate of graffiti recently and we are reporting them as we find them. Mp Update An update from Justin Tomlinson I was on hand at Central Library this month where I spent a Saturday morning encouraging youngsters to sign up to this year’s Summer Reading Challenge. As both a councillor and now MP, I have long been a supporter and user of our local libraries. I have also been a key advocate for the reading challenge campaign which is run every year by the Reading Agency.

One of the most important skills that every child must master is the ability to read and write. I believe we are doing children a disservice if we do not set high aspirations for every child to leave school fully equipped with the ability to read. This is why eliminating illiteracy is central to this Government’s plan for education. Elsewhere, I enjoyed a visit to Haydonleigh Primary School where years 5/6 got to pass their own school parliamentary bill as they learnt about how the democratic process works. The pupils also shared with me their targets for world leaders in regards to the campaign for Global Education, something that I have campaigned for in Parliament. Finally, the summer recess is here. But not too much rest in store as I will be kept busy with visits to local organisations and knocking on doors to speak to local residents! An update from Robert Buckland As your local MP, I’m often contacted by my constituents about Human Rights. I have long had a personal interest in this subject, both as a lawyer and as Chair of the Conservative Human Rights Commission. My work as a criminal law barrister, prosecuting and defending for nearly twenty years before my election, lay at the heart of my work.

The new site is designed to make it easier for my constituents to contact me and find information about upcoming advice surgeries. It’ll also include regular local news, as well as things that I’m involved in outside of the constituency in Parliament. They’ll also be information about the role of MP’s and Government Ministers, which I hope young people and politics newcomers will find useful.

An emerging issue of interest is the rights of children. I believe that all children must enjoy all the rights and protections of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC) without discrimination, as specified under Article 2 of the Convention. This country is a world leader with regards to protecting the rights of our children, but we must continue working to ensure that their voice is heard. I was delighted to welcome the winners of The Wiltshire Global Education Centre’s (WGEC) Global Spotlight Competition from Westlea Primary School to Westminster last Wednesday. The Year 5 and 6 students delivered a fantastic presentation on children’s rights and followed up with some excellent questions on both local and national issues. I am sure that they’ll make Swindon even more proud in the years to come. I recently moved into a new constituency branch office on Wood Street, and soon I’ll be launching a brand new website! Town Centre Update

Bringing Bridge St

The inSwindon BID Company (which represents the town centre businesses) have teamed up with Swindon Borough Council to invest in an exciting project to tidy up Bridge Street. Four empty units have now been given a new lease of life with the goal of making the experience of shopping in the Town Centre a more pleasant one, whilst encouraging businesses to look at the area for future investment. A local Wiltshire business named Smart City Dressing were commissioned to work on the empty shops, pubs and restaurants to change their appearance for the better. The project has been funded equally from a grant provided by the anti-social behaviour team at Swindon Borough Council and the Mary Portas high street fund. The window dressing has helped to give the vision of a new eclectic range of businesses on the street including ‘The Broadwalk’; a once popular bar which has now been given a new look and appears to be an appealing eatery getting ready to open its doors. Another of the businesses ‘Vinyl Tap’ was once a Chinese restaurant and now has the fresh new look of a vinyl record store come coffee shop. This unit is across from the ‘Virtual Deli’ which was, until a few years ago, a furniture shop and now takes the form of an attractive looking town centre delicatessen. The former Ellington’s unit (known to many as ‘The Bedroom’) on the corner of Bridge Street and Fleet Street, has also been completely transformed and is now building on Swindon’s historic railway heritage - reflecting the importance of the ‘Swindon 175’ celebrations next year. The previously popular night spot is now set out as an art gallery boasting photography from Swindon’s vast history with the Railway; with all imagery provided by the Steam Museum.

Di Powell, inSwindon BID Manager said: “We are really pleased to have been working so closely with the local authority to make this impressive change to an area which we feel has a fantastic future ahead of it. We aim to continue with tidying up empty units in the town centre and will be working hard with our partners to encourage new business into those units, bringing back a once thriving area to be enjoyed by all visitors to the Town” Cllr Garry Perkins, Swindon Borough Council cabinet member for Economy, Regeneration and Skills, said: “This idea tackles two related problems at once, firstly by helping to tidy up a retail area which has declined, and secondly by showing businesses what it could look like again. This has attracted new investment in the towns and cities where it has been tried and brought vacant units back into profitable use. It’s a very simple idea and it works.” The project has also received support from businesses next to the units including Wilkinson manager James Gray: “It’s a fantastic improvement to the street which has not only helped to brighten the place up but also created a better trading environment for the businesses in the town”.

We’ve scoured the land for some of the best festival street entertainment, plus world renowned 3D pavement artist Julian Beever will be here from 25th August, creating a bespoke piece of 3D art (www.julianbeever.net). Our street entertainment consists of the funny, the weird and the downright fantastic. The Last Resort is a mixture of installation and animation inhabited by a caricaturist, fortune teller, beach shop, tattoo parlor, photographer and monkey and an elusive chip shop, all topped off with a ridiculous 30 minute static Freak Show, run twice daily.

H&M committing to Swindon as well as the recent Regents Circus development shows that it is a town with huge growth potential.” 17-year-old Megan Stapleton was first in the queue and had been waiting outside of the store from 8.30am ready for the 11.00am launch. Finally, the ribbon was cut and customers were not disappointed as they walked through the doors - the increased size of the new store means that H&M can offer collections for women, men, teenagers and children, with wider aisles and much more varied selections.

Crowds gathered outside the new H&M store in Swindon town centre on the 2nd of July to eagerly await the much anticipated store opening. The store has relocated from its old location in Regent Street to a new 20,000sqft store in the Parade, creating around 15 new jobs in the town in a mix of full and part time positions, in addition to staff relocating from the old store. Speaking before the opening, Carlos Duarte, Country Manager H&M UK & IE said: “We are excited to be relocating our store in Swindon and bringing more fashion and quality products to our customers in a sustainable way.” “It’s exciting to continue to expand nationwide, throughout the UK, reaching both new and existing customers”.

She said: “I have always loved H&M and today is my birthday, so I am determined to be first in the new store. I can’t wait to get in there! I am planning on buying an outfit for my birthday celebration.” “I love H&M because it targets all ages, shapes and styles - I am here with my Mum today and there is guaranteed to be lots of clothes she will love too.” Just before the scheduled 11am opening, H&M staff performed an impressive dance display outside the store entertaining the waiting crowd.

Karate Feature

20 years of teaching July marked a significant milestone in Andi Kidd’s karate career as been teaching in Swindon for 20 years. The club opened as the ‘Swindon Shotokan Karatedo Club’ in July 1995 at the Walcot Dome Community Centre. Local need for an inexpensive club brought Andi to the recently reopened centre where the club quickly established itself as a friendly and progressive organisation. The club stayed at the Walcot Dome until the centre went through a brief shutdown in 2010 and the club moved to its home now, St Joseph’s Catholic College. There have been many people walk through the doors of the karate club including many families, some trained for a while and some have gone on to achieve their black belt and more.

Andi says “I can’t believe it has been 20 years, the time seems to have flown. I have met some great people along the way and it has been an honour to teach them. I am looking forward to the next 20!”

The Chinese and Their Love Of Fish. The Chinese and their love of fish has existed for many years, so much so that legend has it that they introduced the Koi Carp to the Japanese some 500 years B.C. The koi symbolises many things to the Chinese including good fortune, success, prosperity, longevity, courage , ambition and perseverance and not least its association with feng shui. Although there is a huge emergence of Japanese cuisine coming to our shores which is now revered and talked about amongst chefs and restaurants alike let us not forget that the Chinese have introduced to us some exceptional and exciting seafood dishes. In this article I hope to inspire you to create and cook some great tasting Chinese food.

To start with why not try a simple steamed sea bass with garlic, and spring onions. Bass fillets or a whole fish will work equally well in a Chinese steamer. If you dont have one try placing the fish on a covered plate over a pan of boiling water. Sprinkle the bass with plenty of finely sliced ginger and spring onion and steam for about 10 minutes (depending on the size of the fish.) Then in a separate pan heat a little groundnut oil until sizzling take off the heat, add a little sugar, soy sauce and hint of tomato sauce and pour straight onto the cooked bass. Served with Jasmine rice and simple stir fried vegetables this recipe makes for a simple, healthy and quick meal. As an alternative try

using mussels or scallops instead of bass. Last year we had a delivery of fresh cooked whelks ~ I sliced these into thin pieces and stir fried them in a wok with pak choi, sliced ginger, spring onion and garlic. I used groundnut oil, a splash of oyster and soy sauce and a little ground white pepper. Again a simple dish but very effective. My favourite Chinese dish is salt and pepper szechuan prawns. Lightly dust the raw prawns in cornflour and stir fry in a little peanut oil until they turn pink, then add a tiny amount of oyster sauce and stir fry with coarsely ground szechuan pepper. Finally sprinkle some sea salt and garnish with fresh coriander. Perfect as a starter. Squid is also a perfect alternative for prawns in this dish, maybe with a little chilli added â&#x20AC;&#x201C; your choice. Finally how about stir fried noodles with mange tout and topped with fresh crab and chilli. First boil the noodles, this can be done in advance as long as the noodles are kept in cold water once cooked. Then stir fry some long sliced spring onion and mange tout in a little vegetable or sunflower oil, add some finely chopped garlic, ginger and chilli, then add a splash of oyster sauce and soy sauce and stir fry for about a minute. Then add the drained noodles and stir in to the sauce and season with salt and white pepper. Finally serve the noodles into a bowl and top with fresh crab meat and sliced chilli. A drizzle of sweet chilli sauce would work well at this point. Garnish with fresh coriander and a wedge of lemon or lime. These recipes are so good that I now wear a kimono, talk perfect Cantonese and can easily converse in any Chinese restaurant! Have Fun!

Stratton Juniors Interview

SJFC goes from strength to strength! Founded in 1992 by a couple of dedicated parents, Stratton Juniors Football Club (SJFC) has grown from just one team and a hand full of players to nine age groups from U5s to U15s, with almost 200 children in the local community playing structured grass roots football.

In 2010 the club achieved the FA Charter ‘standard’ status, which is awarded to football clubs who provide a high quality football experience. FA Charter Standard clubs are proven to be well run, sustainable, and importantly place child protection, quality coaching and safety as paramount. The aspirations of the SJFC committee does not stop there, with plans to take the club to the next level by achieving the prestigious FA Charter Standard ‘Development’ status.

However, all is not plain sailing… In a recent article in the BBC, FA Chairman Greg Dyke highlighted the plight that many grass roots football clubs face stating: “There’s a degree of crisis in what’s happening in grassroots football. Facilities are being lost and local authorities have come to us and said ‘what can we do about it?”. SJFC are feeling the effects of this hard. Two years ago the club was informed that the pitches it has used for so many years were being sold for housing development. Whilst some provision was made for new facilities it did not meet the aspirations of the long-term development of the club. Instead, the committee has been working in partnership with Stratton Parish Council to secure an exclusive longterm lease on local facilities. This agreement is one major foundation for securing the long-term future of the club.

the emphasis of coaching is about development and enjoyment. The development primarily focuses on the technical side of the game, which is delivered in a structured but fun way. Working with parents, the club ensures that match days are a pressure free environment and emphasis is on development and not winning, but by playing with a smile and focusing on technical ability the results naturally come good.

Testament to this approach is the number of boys that year after year are selected by various football league academies, who we hope we have helped develop.

Despite the ‘off-field’ challenges, on-field SJFC goes from strength to strength. Committed to playing the game in the “right” way, SJFC only exists through the dedication of volunteer coaches and committee members and to help the club meet its aspiration of charter development status, funding is critical. Kentwood Choir Update

Kentwood The choir with a difference deciding to concentrate full time on her own Kentwood School of Music which now provides tuition in voice production, composition, pianoforte, the theory of music and stage technique.

This Month I spoke with Swindon’s very own Sheila Harrod founder of Kentwood “The choir with a difference” Sheila’s musical career began as a child in the Salvation Army in which her father, George Snook, was Divisional Bandmaster for the South and West of England. By the age of fifteen, Sheila had passed all her examinations with the Associated Board of the Royal School of Music in both singing and pianoforte and went on to gain her Diploma as a Licentiate of Trinity College, London specialising in Class Music Teaching. Sheila spent several years teaching music in a local comprehensive school before

local charities. Her interests outside the world of music include travelling, swimming, cooking, dining out and the theatre.

She is the Founder and Musical Director of the Kentwood Choir, the Kentwood Junior Choir, the Kentwood Company and the Kentwood Children’s Chorus. Sheila is a member of the Association of British Choral Directors and also of Equity, having acted as Chorus Mistress and Voice Coach with numerous musical shows as well as her own appearances on stage and in cabaret. She has recently begun to give her own Voice Workshops to choirs around the country, specialising in the singing of lighter music and the presentation and visual staging of performances. Sheila had the honour to be awarded the British Empire Medal (B.E.M.) in the 1993 new Year’s Honours List for her services to music and to
