Swindon Mayor Teresa Page and Swindon Town FC Manager Mark Cooper open new NSPCC service centre with some little helpers History of the NSPCC On 8 July 1884, The London Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children was established. Lord Shaftesbury was appointed as president and the Reverend Benjamin Waugh and Reverend Edward Rudolf as joint honorary secretaries. By 1889, the London Society had 32 branches throughout England, Wales and Scotland. Each branch raised funds to support an inspector, who investigated reports of child abuse and neglect.

Today (Wednesday 17 September) Swindon Mayor, Teresa Page, joined Swindon Town FC Manager Mark Cooper, to celebrate the official launch of the NSPCC’s new service centre in Swindon. Local primary school children from King William Street Primary and Lethbridge Primary, two great supporters of the NSPCC locally, also came along to help make the celebrations today extra special. The centre in Swindon Old Town will deliver a range of services that will focus on safeguarding vulnerable children and young people in the Swindon area – including children under one, children who have suffered neglect or sexual abuse or have parents with drug and alcohol issues. The centre offers a wide range of facilities to help children feel at ease in a safe, colourful and comfortable environment.

PAGE 4

NSPCC Swindon service manager, Ingrid Anson, said: “The NSPCC has operated services in Swindon for nearly 27 years and we’re very pleased to be able to continue that commitment at our new home. The new service centre has brought together two teams from the outskirts of Swindon into a purpose designed larger facility which will help us to expand our work and pioneer new approaches to address the child protection problems facing local children and deliver services that will help create a safer future for our children.”

The first Prevention of Cruelty to Children Act was passed in 1889. This was largely the result of five years’ vigorous lobbying by Waugh and his supporters. The NSPCC continues to uphold and develop the campaigning tradition established by its founder, acting as an independent voice for children and young people. Since its establishment in London in the 1880s, the NSPCC has helped more than 10 million children in the UK.

In more recent years Although our society is now radically different, the emergence of new and different social pressures means that the work of the NSPCC is as important today as it was in Victorian England. Source: www.nspcc.org.uk

Main Feature

Last year the team provided therapeutic care to more than 150 children from the local area and referrals this year suggest that figure will rise for 2014. Swindon Town FC has adopted the NSPCC as its charity for 2014/15 and Mark Cooper was delighted to be asked to come along and officially open the centre which their fundraising efforts will help to support,

Mark said: “It’s fantastic to see the centre in action and meet everyone involved in this wonderful facility. As a club we are committed to raising as much as we can in the coming season to support such a great local presence.” During the event, young people from the NSPCC Swindon participation group joined local primary school children, NSPCC staff, supporters and other delegates in creating a ‘wishing cake’, making wishes for local children in Swindon who will be using the centre. During her visit and official duties Swindon Mayor Teresa Page took time out to thank volunteers and staff personally for helping the service to be there for children and young people and called for more local people to consider volunteering.

The mayor said: “I’m thrilled to be here today to officially open the NSPCC Swindon Service Centre. I’ve met such a wonderful team who support these vulnerable children and young people on a daily basis, and I am honoured to be a part of such a very special day.”

The services being delivered from the Swindon Service Centre are: Baby steps – a perinatal education programme to help parents during the transition to parenthood, and support them to care for their new baby. Letting the Future in – a guide developed by the NSPCC to help professionals work therapeutically with sexually abused children and young people and their safe (non-abusing) carers. Parents under Pressure - an intensive parenting programme for methadone maintained and alcohol dependent primary carers of young children. SafeCare® - this is a parent support and training programme which seeks to prevent neglect and other harm to young children. ChildLine Schools Service – aims to visit every primary school in Swindon to talk to children about abuse, how to protect themselves and where to get help if they need it.

Facts & figures about child abuse in the UK Police recorded over 23,000 sex offences against children aged under 18 years in England and Wales between April 2012 and March 2013. More than one in three children (34 per cent) who experienced contact sexual abuse by an adult did not tell anyone else about it. In 2012/13 NSPCC helpline advisors responded to nearly 51,000 contacts from adults concerned about a child. More than half of these were serious enough to warrant referral to local police or children’s services for further investigation. Neglect is the most common reason for a child to be the subject of a child protection plan or on a child protection register in the UK. 1 in 20 children in the UK have been sexually abused. Four out of five children (82.7 per cent) who experienced contact sexual abuse from a peer did not tell anyone else about it.

Feature continues over the page.

As if this wasn’t a huge achievement already we should mention that Hilary only launched her business in April this year, whereas other finalists have been running over nine years! She was nominated by the Franchisor and Founder of Wagging Tails Lisa Suswain who said, “Hilary has blown us away with her drive, enthusiasm and passion for everything Wagging Tails! The feedback we have received from both owners and her team of carers in such a short time is testament to her passion for animal welfare and providing owners and dogs with the best home dog boarding service in Wiltshire. We are very proud and utterly thrilled for Hilary.” Wagging Tails is a home dog boarding company offering unparalleled care of dogs on holiday and unrivalled customer service for owners; in a nutshell dogs who holiday with Wagging Tails get a 5* holiday destination with a vetted, licensed and insured carer who is at home to give them the PAGE 8

“I am absolutely thrilled. I work closely with my team of carers to ensure we provide the best possible care for dogs across the SN postcode area. To be nominated for this award and then reach the final is a massive achievement.” The Awards winners will be announced on Thursday October 23rd at a Monte Carlothemed dinner to be held at Whittlebury Hall Hotel & Spa, near Towcester, Northamptonshire. The awards will be presented by boxing legend Frank Bruno MBE

Pets weeks before the event, gradually increasing the volume and playing time, taking the opportunity to associate the sound of fireworks with their favourite things in life. Make sure that you reward them and praise them as normal for their good behaviour paying no attention or reacting yourself to the noise of the fireworks playing on the CD.

Vet Column by Drove Veterinary Hospital Each November vastly more explosive is ignited as fireworks than the amount that Guy Fawkes actually failed to ignite under Parliament over 400 years ago. Properly controlled this brings entertainment for many, but not always for our pets. The firework season may go with a bang for you and your family, but it is estimated that approximately 60% of pets become stressed and fearful. There are many quick and simple steps pet owners can follow to prepare in advance for the firework season and ensure that the experience is as stress-free as possible. The sound detection ability of dogs can be more than twice that of humans, with cats even twice a good as dogs, so it is not surprising that the sudden noise of fireworks can leave some pets badly confused and frightened, particularly if they cannot detect the cause. Getting used to fireworks is very important, and many pets can be successfully helped by using desensitisation CD’s such as Fear of Fireworks or Crash Bang Wallop, available from many veterinary surgeries. We would always recommend that you start several ANYTHING SWINDON

reduce the noise from the outside, play music or have the TV on to help mask the noise of fireworks and providing a den you will create a safe, comfortable and quiet area for them should they need it. You know your pet better than anybody and will often notice changes in behaviour in traumatic situations, such as bonfire night. During the firework season many pets can become stressed, symptoms can include: Dogs: Trembling and shaking, Clinging to owners, Barking excessively. Cowering and hiding behind furniture, Trying to run away, Soiling the house Pacing and panting and Refusing to eat

Natural products such as Zylkene are clinically proven to reduce anxiety and can be administered the day before fireworks start. DAP diffusers (Dog Appeasing Pheromone) or Feliway diffusers (for cats) can also be used releasing calming pheromones providing your pet with reassurance and comfort in challenging situations. Make sure that you plug the diffuser in where your pet rests for about two weeks before you start the desensitisation work, and then keep it going. On the evenings you expect fireworks, make sure that your pet is safely inside ensuring all your windows and doors are secure, you may also want to consider microchipping your pet before the fireworks start because if they do escape a frightened or confused animal can easily get lost. Walk your dog earlier in the day prior to the evening and the commencement of the fireworks, we would advise you draw the curtains to WWW.ANYTHINGSWINDON.CO.UK

Cats: Cowering and hiding behind or on top of furniture, Trying to run away, Soiling the house and Refusing to eat

Please don’t punish your pet, this only confirms that there is something to be afraid off. If possible don’t go out while the fireworks are going off, as seeing you acting normally will help them feel more settled. It is vital that you ignore any fearful behaviour and do not try to comfort them as they will pick up on your anxiety, and this may make the problem worse. Fussing a pet that appears frightened can reward and encourage this behaviour in the future. Be positive. If pets sense you are worried about them, they worry too!

Councillor Updates Old Town Councillor Update East Wichel News: At the time of writing, the new play area in East Wichel should be open at the end of September. It is looking fantastic. This has been long awaited by residents and I am sure it will be well used. An official opening is planned for the October half term. The formal consultation into the parking restrictions in East Wichel should start at the beginning of October. I would encourage as many East Wichel residents as possible to take part in this consultation. Now that the Waitrose store has been opened and traffic levels should have settled, a traffic survey is being carried out in Mill Lane to assess traffic levels on that road. One outcome that could come out of the results of this survey would be to close Mill Lane at the Waitrose Junction, to prevent two-way traffic coming up and down the part of the road that leads on to Westlecot Road. As soon as I know the results of the survey, I’ll let people know. Old Town News: It was great to see so many people attend the Sausage and Ale Trail in Wood Street - The Old Town Business & Professional Association did a brilliant job organising this event. I also enjoyed the Swindon Open Studio event - there are some amazing artists in Old Town. I look forward to these events taking place again next year. The Angel Ridge play area is well under way and should be completed by the beginning of November. I am attending a meeting about the Corn Exchange development with its developer in October. The timescales and the details of the planning application are due to be discussed and I’ll keep residents updated on the outcome of this meeting. Cllr Nadine Watts 07595 071381 Rodbourne Cheney Councillors Update: People are constantly raising concerns with your local councillors over the future of the Oasis Leisure Complex. In response we would say that we are completely happy with Greenwich Leisure (GLL)- the company contracted to run the Oasis centre part of the operation. GLL is a nationally renowned company and we are confident that the gym and the rest of the leisure facilities will continue to be well managed by them. However we are becoming increasingly concerned that the re-development of the Oasis complex will not occur while the council continues to engage with the present developer, Moirai. Concerns have been raised as to the financial viability of Moirai and now we have discovered a number failures by Moirai. Our colleague Des Moffatt discovered that the former Clares site was not secure and that up to 30 culvert covers were missing creating very deep unguarded holes that children or young people might fall down. Given children have been seen playing on the site we insisted the danger be dealt with. When Moirai failed to act, the Council was forced to intercede and make the area safe. The long term plan for the Oasis complex, including the proposal for a Snowdome, in under threat and we feel that if the Council is to deliver the plan they need to cancel the contract with Moirai and make other arrangements. We shall keep you updated on this issue in the coming months. Cllr Jim Grant 07914380178, Cllr Des Moffatt 07709066707 & Cllr Peter Watts 01793 529163 Update on issues for Penhill and Upper Stratton. Averies Fire: Thankfully the Averies fire is now out and the people of Swindon can breath again (without choking on horrible fumes and smoke), Cllr Mark Dempsey and myself are bringing a motion to council to ask for an enquiry to prevent any such crisis happening again, and question the future licensing of that company. Queensfield Pub: The planning committee has given the go ahead for demolition of the Queensfield pub and the building of 10 new properties, but with only parking for 9 cars! That will mean more congestion on the road. Road Repairs: The Borough are starting some repairs to our roads over the next few months, mainly the main roads, I will let you know when there are to be closures to our roads or restrictions. Thanks, Councillors Joe Tray, Paul Baker & Teresa Page Park South Councillors Update Green Waste: We continue to raise the unsightly piles of green waste we see around Park South. The council is still refusing to remove them for fear of attracting more fly-tipping though leaving the piles seems to attract more. If you see dumped waste do get in touch or report it in. What Matters to you in Park South? You are invited to drop in and meet us your Councillors & PPC Anne Snelgrove on Monday 13th October or Drop in anytime between 6.30-8.30pm at Park South Community Centre. This will also give you an opportunity to look around and meet those now running the community centre. Children will be welcome and there will be free refreshments, so please come along & let us know what matters to you where you live. We’d love to meet you. Interview

Sooty Q&A with Richard Cadell

You’re currently touring the country with Sooty, who many viewers will know from TV.

What can audiences expect from the live show? It’s everything you’d expect from a Sooty show - magic, music and mayhem! It’s all about Sooty’s birthday and the gang are desperately trying to get everything ready in time. Inevitably, things don’t go according to plan, and when the ingredients for the cake are unleashed, things get a little bit messy!

Do you prefer working with a live audience or on TV sets? Making the TV shows is great fun, but you can’t beat the reaction you get from a live audience. Working on stage, there’s a chance for some interaction and for the whole family to get involved, and I think it’s important to make sure the adults enjoy the show as much as the children do. You get so much more of a buzz performing in front of a live audience - it’s quite exhilarating, really! Sooty has been a staple of kids’ TV for over 60 years. PAGE 14

How do you feel about continuing the legacy of such a well-known and well-loved character? I think I’m quite in awe about the whole thing and, obviously, I’m hugely proud to be the man who looks after Sooty. Everyone who works on the show is passionate and enthusiastic and totally devoted to preserving this little bear’s legacy, and I’m sure Sooty will go on to entertain children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren for many more years to come!

Have you always wanted to go into children’s entertainment? I’ve been involved in children’s entertainment for as long as I can remember - in fact I had my own Punch and Judy show when I was still a child myself! So yes, it’s something I’ve always been passionate about, and I enjoy it a great deal. I feel a little trepidation when I see the dreaded custard pies approaching, but it’s an occupational hazard and I’m quite used to it by now!

What’s the best thing about your job? The best thing about my job is that I get to work with Sooty! It’s an absolute dream come true for me and I couldn’t ask for anything more. It’s also great to meet people from all walks of life who come up to me after the live shows and share their own childhood memories of Sooty - most of them have children themselves now! It’s an honour to see how this little bear has entertained so many people for so many years, and I’m immensely proud to be a part of it.

Zoe Robson’s Story On Saturday 31st August 2013, Zoe Robson walked into a room that quite literally changed her life. “I felt like a rabbit in the headlights, I felt scared, frightened and embarrassed”. Zoe had just walked into her first Slimming World group. Obesity levels are reaching epidemic levels. It is now believed that over 60% of adults are obese and 28% of children aged between 2 and 15 are also obese. Louise Robins, who runs the Slimming World group at Freshbrook Community Centre on Saturdays, says “At Slimming World we don’t want to be the biggest or the richest slimming organisation, we simply want to help 1 million people achieve healthier lifestyles”.

“Zoe before her Slimming World Journey”

Zoe’s Slimming World journey started when she visited her doctor. Her BMI was high at 34, but it was her blood pressure that shocked her to take action as it had reached a dangerous level at 134/98. “I decided there and then I would join Slimming World, having seen friends and family members successfully lose weight”. Like many people that choose to join Slimming World Zoe had tried every diet under the sun, so it was Slimming Worlds unique Food Optimising plan that grabbed her attention. PAGE 16

“Slimming World is not a diet, it is a lifestyle change, and for me it was quite a big one. I was concerned that I wouldn’t be able to enjoy meals out with my family and would have to cook separate food, but in fact it was the complete opposite. Food Optimising is so liberating as I can still enjoy eating out with my family and friends, I just make healthier choices and Slimming World has helped me build a better relationship with food and all of the family benefit from this. I cook from scratch making family friendly meals such as pork pad Thai, chicken Rogan josh and diet coke chicken!” Zoe’s Consultant Louise understands the journeys her members take, and she also understands how hard it is walking in to a group for the very first time. “As a member I have lost 2 stone in total, and I am still a member attending a group. I feel it is important that my members know that I understand what it’s like. I understand how it feels to be obese and I know losing weight can be a challenge, but I promise every member from the bottom of my heart that I will support them every step of the way”. Zoe is now a target member of the Freshbrook Slimming World group and still attends group every week. “My Saturday mornings is my group mornings. The support you get from the group and Consultant is invaluable. They are with you every step of the way; you are never on your own with Slimming World”. Zoe reached her target on 21st June 2014 losing 4 stone 8 pounds. In that time she has also gone from a size 16/18 to a 10/12, her BMI is 23.4 and

her blood pressure is now stable at 114/70. “What I love about Slimming World is that you are not restricted on what you can and can eat, you truly can Food Optimise for life and I will keep following the Extra Easy plan. I love the fact that every half stone is celebrated with a certificate and a sticker! It have me something to aim for and made my journey less daunting”.

“Zoe proving with the right support anything is achievable”

Zoe’s husband followed the plan with her at home and then decided to join himself and achieved his own target within 12 weeks. “I would say to anyone thinking about joining Slimming World to go for it! Taking that first step is the hardest, but once you have made it that’s where your journey starts and you will get all the support you need. I hate to think where I would be today if I had not joined Slimming World”. Louise Robins runs two groups on a Saturday morning at Freshbrook Community Centre. New dining experience at the Outlet Village! served with a wedge of fresh lemon). Although slightly weary of beetroot on a pizza, the Caprina Rossa tasted fresh and delicious and certainly had the thumbs up from the both of us.

This month we visited the newly opened Pizza Express outlet Village, Swindon. Pizza Express is a well-known chain that offers a delicious Italian range of dishes. On first impression, the restaurant appeared very clean and modern, whilst capturing the historical importance of its location. Quirky ‘train carriage’ like seating booths and Great Western Railways photographs on view gave the restaurant a very inviting feel. Once seated we were presented with a menu full of mouth-watering options from fresh Olives to Calzone we certainly had our work cut out to make a choice from a fantastically presented selection of Dishes. Spoilt for choice, I decided that my starter would be Bruschetta Originale, a flat bread served with Tomatoes, red onions, garlic, fresh basil and pesto. My partner chose Leggera Panzanella (a low-calorie option) which was full of colour and included Santos & vine tomatoes, cucumber, red onion, capers and croutons, all marinated with extra virgin olive oil, garlic, basil and balsamic vinegar. Both dishes tasted beautiful and very well presented. Although the Leggera Panzanella was a light options starter, it certainly didn’t lack any flavour & would come highly recommended. For our mains we chose a selection of dishes from the menu including a classic Romana Pizza (topped with Hot soft n’duja sausage, roquito peppers, speck ANYTHING SWINDON

ham, Gran Moravia cheese), along with a highly recommended Lasagna Classica made with traditional Bolognese sauce, mushrooms, tomatoes, béchamel sauce and Gran Moravia cheese. This was an eyes bigger than belly moment and trying to eat both dishes was a task to great, The Etna pizza was to die for with a great mixture of flavours and spices I would certainly recommend this topping to anyone who enjoys a bit of a kick added to an array of flavours without the effects of a numb tongue. Beautiful Pizza and well recommended.

The open top kitchen style allowed us to see all the food being freshly prepared. With fresh tomatoes being chopped, dough bases being spun around, we knew we were going to be in for a delicious Italian treat. Despite being a little full after our mains, we decided that the dessert menu looked too good to refuse.

I chose a Leggera Sorbet, which was served with Two scoops of dairy-free raspberry sorbet. This was one of many ‘mini desert’ options, which can be ordered with coffee, my partner chose their ultimate favourite pudding, the Tiramisu, a coffee, cocoa, cream, mascarpone, marsala wine and sponge fingers. We can honestly say that on this occasion, Pizza Express did not let us down and both plates were soon enough emptied! I would recommend a visit to Swindon’s newest Italian Restaurant.

As I move onto my Lasagne Classica I realise over indulging on my Etna Pizza would be a regret as now I am enjoying what is easily one of the best tasting lasagne dishes I have ever had the pleasure of tasting, well presented with a good balance of sauce and pasta. My Partner chose a vegetarian based Romana Pizza, The Caprina Rossa (topped with Beetroot, goat’s cheese, red onion, garlic, tomato and mozzarella all finished with Gran Moravia cheese, rocket and pesto, WWW.ANYTHINGSWINDON.CO.UK

Guest Interview before that speech, he had eaten some cheese. So, it’s all about keeping it up and down, making a point but keeping the laughter flowing.”

Stephen K Amos doesn’t strike you as one of life’s awkward customers. But that’s exactly what he is aiming to be in his new touring show, Welcome To My World. Having had enough of being asked the same questions time and time again (such as ‘what does the K stand for?’), Amos is looking to get some new, big questions on the table.

Issues a little closer to home are also stretching Amos’ patience, and he’ll be posing more tough questions about the current political landscape in Britain. “At the recent European elections, there was a move to the far right. Over here, it seemed like UKIP was the only party running in the elections. On TV, radio and in print, it was all about them.

“Even in this day and age, we still don’t like to talk about things like race and sexuality or how much money you earn, all those awkward dinner party conversation fillers. There’s a certain weirdness that can spark up in those areas and that gives me a springboard to be awkward within the show and ask the audience the awkward, challenging questions.”

And all I can gather from their policies is that they have views on immigration and Europe, and nothing else. Yet people have rushed to make this protest vote. I’d like to think it’s a flash in the pan, and we’ve now seen what happens when people don’t exercise their fundamental right to vote. But history has taught us that wake-up calls don’t always get heeded.”

World affairs is something that’s currently playing on Amos’ mind and he’s not going to shy away from getting a measure of his crowd’s opinion on prickly contemporary issues. “Bearing in mind what’s going on with Russia at the moment, where they’re going into Ukraine and grabbing bits of a country that was once theirs, I wonder why the world is reacting the way it has? Is the reason we’re not properly taking Russia to task is that they’re a superpower and a big danger to us, so we’re just paying them lip service? How would the world react if the indigenous people of Australia tried to claim what is theirs rightfully?” PAGE 22

All of which sounds rather serious and somewhat unAmos like. But don’t worry, the London comic knows full well how to play to his strengths. “Ultimately, my main focus is that they’ve got to laugh. The people who come to my shows are, generally speaking, the converted, so there’s no point in me just telling them about race and politics and getting all this applause, that’s just pointless. So I’m giving them the jokes and getting it down to a very basic level. Think back to Martin Luther King and his great speech about having a dream: I’ve always thought how the world might be a different place if the night

Since he arrived on the comedy scene back in 2001, Amos has had no problem with facilitating the sound of laughter in every room he’s appeared in. He’s had a string of acclaimed Edinburgh Fringe stand-up shows such as All Of Me and Find The Funny, acted on the West End alongside Christian Slater and Frances Barber in One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest, had his own entertainment shows on TV and radio, presented Batty Man, a BAFTA-nominated documentary for Channel 4 and even appeared as a doctor in two episodes of EastEnders. But like many UK acts who have conquered their own country, eyes naturally turn to the US. “I’m going there for maybe three months to get a lot of stuff under my belt. One of the main things is to put yourself out there and get yourself known; my goal is to get onto the late night comedy shows because they have yet to see a black British comic on there. I don’t want to jinx myself or sound big-headed but I would absolutely kill it. There was a big resistance towards any British comics for a while, but they love Monty Python and the surrealness of Eddie Izzard. It’s definitely a market waiting to happen.” In his last touring show, The Spokesman (sharp-eyed anagram fans might spot ‘Stephen K Amos’ in there), he set out to prove that being a leader is not part of his career plan. “If you’re going to be a spokesman for anything, you have to be honest and proud and be able to back it up 100%.

Movie News There are things I have done: I’ve parked in disabled bays, I’ve kept change that was given to me in excess, so I really wouldn’t make a good spokesman.” Given that he mentioned Eddie Izzard, a comic who is not afraid to wear his political colours on his sleeve and has hinted that he might run for London Mayor one day, is public office something that Amos would fancy having a go at? “No. Even in my job, I don’t harm anybody; if you don’t like my kind of comedy you can just switch me off. But it stirs something up in people when you talk about politics, and by its very definition, people will either love or hate you and some will write what they want about you. I do accept there’s freedom of speech, but what is it about the internet and Twitter which just compels people to go and slag someone off? Ten, fifteen years ago, what did these people do? Did they sit in their own houses just banging their heads against a wall because an outlet wasn’t there?”

So, given than he’s tried his hand successfully at stand-up, acting and presenting, is there anything left for him to try? How about fronting his own TV chat show? It’s not such a crazy idea given that he’s had a talk show at the Edinburgh Fringe. “I think we are due a black talk show host. We had such fun doing it in Edinburgh and I think I’m good with people, a very good listener and I can run with stuff that happens in the moment. And I’m not one of those cruel comics.” No, just a seemingly effortless, naturally funny one.

Sports and Fitness

The start to the 2014/15 campaign for Swindon College Old Boys has been a mix of emotions for the revitalised team that were relegated from the Southern Counties league last year. With several new signings and a successful summer of rehabilitation and conditioning work the squad has been champing at the bit to get the competitions underway.

The opening three games of the 1st XV season have been a mix of brilliance, determination and frustration for the coaches, but nevertheless have seen three wins. The squad has developed a strength in depth that has been absent in recent years with second row Tommy Perrett taking his first 1st XV start (and scoring on debut), captain Gareth Davis leading the way, new signing Damon Murphy (former Devizes 1st XV) and returning centres Stu Knight and Matt Allen working to devastating effect. Above all, one man has stood out; the return of veteran back row Richie

Smith has been astounding his energy, ability and passion have been second to none and have earned him the leadBOSS player of the month. One lesson, learnt from past seasons, is that with every success come headaches. The investment from sponsors and the intent from all involved with SCOB to excel this season have made life difficult for the selection committee. With so many players wanting the starting shirts, but only 18 shirts to fill the second team has increased in strength, size and determination. This determination was reflected in the recent clash with Avonvale who managed to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat with a last minute turnover to defeat SCOB II by 21-19 at the Nationwide pavilion – this is still a loss, however from the 2013/14 defeat by over 80 points it is a statement of intent for all teams who are yet to face the Nationwide based team.

“The aim of the partnership is to make university degrees more accessible to local people” New College Swindon has become one of the first colleges in the UK to offer a pioneering new method of studying for a university degree in the local community. This opportunity is the result of a new partnership between the college and leading UK distance learning provider RDI, forming a new study model called OnlinePlus – online study with campus access and weekend seminars. Starting in October, local residents will be able to study for university awarded degrees in Business, Computing and Psychology, learning online while also benefitting from a social and academic life on campus through ‘associate student’ status. Applications are now being taken for the October 14 intake. A sports centre, gym, chaplaincy, open learning centre, counselling service and full IT support are among the facilities at New College’s New College Drive campus facilities available to “OnlinePlus” students.

Students studying through OnlinePlus at New College can also apply for a tuition fee loan to cover their course fees from the Student Loans Company. Student loans are available to all ages, with no upper age limit on tuition fee loans. College principal Graham Taylor: “This is an exciting development which opens up new opportunities and important new subject areas for our students, and for the wider local community. “We are especially proud to be one of the first further education colleges in the country to offer this new way to study a degree which fits around busy people’s lives.” Phil Hallam, Chief Executive at RDI, said: “These degree courses now offer the best of both worlds – the flexibility of distance learning with the reassurance of regular face-to-face contact with tutors, in a familiar local environment.”

Megan Farr, 21, is one of the first students to sign up for an OnlinePlus course with New College and will be studying for her BSc (Hons) Computing (Top-up). “I’ve been at New College for the past four years, in which time I’ve completed an IT Practitioners BTEC and an HND in Computer Science,” she said. “I knew I wanted to progress to a degree but to do that, I was going to have to leave New College as until now this wasn’t an option.”

Why Choose the New College Swindon. We offer a wide range of leisure, academic and vocational courses, for adult students from entry level right up to degree level and beyond. Courses and training that will help you progress in your chosen career or improve your employability are also available. For more information please visit: www.newcollege.ac.uk

The aim of the partnership is to make university degrees more accessible to local people, and more affordable - OnlinePlus fees are the equivalent of £3,995 per level compared to up to £9,000 per level for full-time on-campus university study.
