Old Town Festival Programme 2016

Page 1

Old Town Festival Saturday 11th - 18th June 2016 The Old Town Festival 2016 promises to be a fantastic week of events for all the family! From the Parade to the Commonweal Performing Arts Marquee, Dog Show, Fairground Rides, the Scouts’ Climbing Wall and stalls at the Lawn to the Pop Concert in the Bowl at the Town Gardens. The committee is a very strong team of volunteers who are committed to the festival and without them the festival simply wouldn’t happen! Thank you one and all for your services to the community, you are unsung heroes! Thank you also to our Patron Sheila Harrod for her continued support which is very much appreciated by us all. Thank you to all our sponsors, without you it would be very difficult to find the finances to fund the festival. We are pleased be supporting this year’s festival charity TWIGS Therapeutic Work In Gardening in Swindon, one of Swindon’s hidden gems, which I am sure you will agree will benefit many people in Swindon, so please give generously when you see the bucket collectors come your way as every little helps. In my capacity as Community Arts Development and Press Liaison Officer at Commonweal I feel I have got a lot to bring to the festival. I have over twelve years’ experience in Commonweal organising events and leading teams both in school and in the wider community. Thank you to Head teacher Keith Defter for seconding me and thus enabling me to be free to stand as Chair.

Bring on the sunshine! Josie Williams, Festival Chair 2016 E-mail: josie@commonweal.co.uk Designed and Printed by Screaming Media Ltd 01793 977117 www.screamingmedia.co.uk

Old Town Festival branching out to help TWIGS.

Every year members of Old Town Festival committee vote on a charity and the nominees are suggestion from members of the committee and the public. This year TWIGS won the vote! “The majority of voting was in favour of this local charity who do such good work in the community and we hope we can raise much needed funds to further their work, said Josie Williams, Festival Chair and Community Arts Development Officer at Commonweal School. TWIGS – Therapeutic Work In Gardening in Swindon – is one of Swindon’s hidden gems. Tucked away in Cheney Manor industrial estate is an oasis of peace and tranquillity with a strong sense of purpose. Next door, in Manor Garden Centre, the Olive Tree Café is celebrating its fifth birthday and its continuing success. Both TWIGS and the Olive Tree give people with mental health difficulties the chance to recover and grow; to learn new skills in horticulture and catering; to restore confidence and belief in themselves. Every year one in four of us will experience some form of mental health problem – for some it may happen only once, for others it can be a lifelong problem. These two projects make a difference to people’s lives; they help to reduce the stigma of mental illness and make recovery a reality. TWIGS is open to the public on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 10am 3.30 when plants etc are for sale. The Spring Open Day is on 17 April. “Friends of Twigs is a registered charity which supports TWIGS and the Olive Tree cafe both practically and financially. Over the years, we have helped pay for additional staffing costs, launching the café, certificated training, garden and catering equipment, development of new themed gardens, seeds, plants, craft materials and tools, amongst many other things. We are now looking for funds to further develop the kitchen garden – a joint TWIGS/ café project – and are absolutely delighted to have been chosen as the Old Town Festival charity,” said Liza Lishman, Friends of Twigs trustee (treasurer)

The College of Chivalry The College of Chivalry are already sharpening their swords, painting their shields and taking aim with their arrows in preparation for the fantastic events held in the Lawn on Sunday 12th June for this year’s Old Town Festival. We will be dazzling the crowds with the clash of steel, the crack of the bow and the screams of excitement as one Knight reveals himself to be the greatest of them all. This year we will be offering a range of different activities at the festival. • • • •

Train to be a Knight - Learn how to sword fight with our sword masters, using the wooden swords and progressing to true steels. Have a go archery - Try your luck at releasing arrows against our targets (Could you be the next Robin Hood?) Sharp Cutting demonstration - see how our Sharp Swords cut through the different containers. Tournament Fights - Come scream and shout and support your favourite Knight as they do battle in a tournament, ending in the grand melee.

The College have become involved with the Old Town Festival to bring colour, excitement and entertainment to the festival as well as provide education as to life in the Middle Ages. We are a local re-enactment group based by Roves Farm and have provided displays for different schools and events and it will be great to see some of these children again at the festival. We are looking forward to the parade again this year, our banners are prepared our armour being polished and our tabards cleaned. We call on everyone who witnesses the parade to look out for the family crests of the knights and shout to support them as they slowly clank their way through Old Town to the Lawn where they will run their tournament style combats throughout the day at half hour intervals. For more information about the college please go to our website www.collegeofchivalry.com Join our facebook page ‘College of Chivalry Open group.’ or follow us on Instagram ‘collegeofchivalry’ and lastly email Chris Fox fantasticmrfox@hotmail.co.uk

Old Town Festival 2016 - Ten Bridges to Old Town Walk Tuesday 14 June, 6 - 8.30pm

A special Old Town Festival event organised as part of Swindon 175. Swindon 175 celebrates the 175 years since Brunel founded the Railway Works in 1841 and triggered the development of the then New Swindon. The event is supported by the Wilts & Berks Canal Trust. A guided 3.6 mile walk with great views of the countryside to the south and west of Old Town. A range of different features will be pointed out and discussed including “Jurassic age” geology, industrial archaeology, social history and engineering. The guided walk will explore the old railway line south of Old Town, the developments at East and Middle Wichel, and the new section of the Wilts & Berks canal. We will view a surprising number and variety of bridges. The bridges involve lots of different transport methods - canals, railways, roads (large and small), buses, a cycle track and footpaths. Some are old, some are new.

Walk details

The route is along tracks and pavements, but muddy in places. Bring sensible shoes, warm clothing, and waterproofs if it looks showery.

GREASE IS THE WORD FOR NEW YOUTH PROJECT SPONSOR The Wyvern Theatre have announced that local creative services company Screaming Media will be the new sponsor for this year’s Summer Youth Project production of Grease.

Theatre Marketing Manager Laura James said; “I am delighted that Screaming Media have agreed to come on board with us as sponsors of this year’s Summer Youth Project. We have worked together quite a bit over the last year, and Screaming won the contract to produce our 2015 Pantomime Programme which we were thrilled with. We are so excited about this year’s production of Grease, it’s set to be our best yet so it’s brilliant to have the support of a great sponsor.”

The sponsorship deal between the theatre and Screaming Media secures a brand-new partnership which is set to benefit both parties during the run up to the Youth Project, which takes place in August. “Screaming Media are delighted to have the opportunity to sponsor the 2016 Summer youth project” said Company Director Graham Worrallo. “As a business we are keen to support local events and what better way to do this than supporting this fantastic activity.” “The youth project is a fantastic annual tradition and we, like the many local young performers are absolutely delighted to be involved. My wife performed in the first Summer Youth Project “Bugsy Malone” in 1994 at the age of 14, giving her the foundations to choreograph and dance in performances all over Europe before returning to Swindon where she now teaches with Gemma Short School of dance.” Screaming Media provide a wide range of affordable services from print to web design, marketing support and distribution. The company also produce the popular Anything Swindon magazine, which is freely distributed around many areas of Swindon. Graham and Co-Director Ian Butler have rapidly and successfully grown both sides of the business and pride themselves on their exceptional quality.

The aim of Summer Youth Project is to provide up to 250 local young people, aged 9 – 21, with the opportunity to work together in a professional theatre. The project culminates in five performances of a full-scale musical under the supervision of a highly skilled creative team including a professional director, choreographer, musical director, musicians and technical team all in less than 2 weeks. Grease follows ten working-class teenagers from Rydell High School as they navigate the complexities of peer pressure, politics, personal core values and a side of Summer Lovin’! The legendary musical is packed full of unforgettable numbers such as You’re The One That I Want, Summer Nights, Hopelessly Devoted To You and Greased Lightnin’. Over 300 local young people auditioned for the show in April, Grease promises to be the Wyvern’s most electrifyin’ Project yet.
