Russell Watson Feature Russell enjoyed being part of the show immensely and as a result, last year’s Up Close & Personal tour featured local community choirs at each show. Following the success of the choirs last year, Russell is once again inviting local choirs to join him on stage.
Wiltshire Rock Choir will be performing Songs From The Heart with Russell Watson at Wyvern Theatre, Swindon on Thursday 28th July 2016
“Last year’s choirs brought an added energy to the show, something you can only achieve when a range of voices come together as one, and I’m delighted to have the opportunity to perform with local choirs once again this year” ~ Russell
2015 was a phenomenal year for Russell Watson, with a sell-out UK tour, special guest performances at US National Memorial Day in Washington DC singing live to 350,000 people, the Caracalla Unicef Concert in Rome and BBC Proms In the Park - a staggering total of 92 live performances! Russell’s career to date has seen some incredible achievements; his debut album ‘The Voice’ held simultaneous number 1 slots in the US and UK (a world first), spending a record breaking 52 weeks at number 1 in the UK. Russell has sold in excess of 7 million albums and won 4 Classical BRITS. This year Russell will be recording a brand new album at Ennio Morricone’s studio in Rome. The album will include several original pieces co-written by Russell himself, and he will be joined by an impressive line-up of supporting musicians.
“It was amazing to be asked for a second time to support Russell Watson’s tour. He is a great British artist wowing audiences up and down the country with his tremendous voice and showmanship and for Rock Choir to be performing on stage with him is a real honour.
Together with the magnificent orchestras of The Vatican and La Scala, Russell will be accompanied by Nigel Harrison (Blondie), Clive Deamer (Radiohead, Portishead), Danny Robinson, (Jimi Hendrix foundation), Mikey Rowe (Oasis, Noel Gallagher’s High Flying birds), and Gregory Darling (Julian Lennon).
The Rock Choir members have access to all kinds of life-affirming experiences during their journey and this tour with Russell Watson is right at the top! An amazing opportunity and a chance to sing with one of the greats!” – Caroline Redman Lusher, Director
The ‘Songs From The Heart’ tour will feature a stunning collection of our best loved songs, plus an exclusive preview of selected tracks from the forthcoming studio album.
For more information regarding Wiltshire Rock Choir please call 01252 714 276 or email sam.anderson@rockchoir.com
Russell has always been a strong supporter of community choirs, especially after his time as a judge on the BBC prime time show ‘Last Choir Standing’.

Drove Pets Update And, this list is not exhaustive- there are even more conditions that can cause skin disease! Hence, for your vet to achieve a diagnosis of atopic dermatitis, there are a number of investigations that may need to be undertaken, including a clinical examination, tests to screen for fleas, mites and funguses, blood tests to screen for hormonal and whole body diseases, as well as for markers of environmental allergens, trials of specialized diets, and skin biopsies.
Atopic Dermatitis Just like humans, dogs and cats can also suffer from environmental allergies, and these are often worse in the spring and summer. These environmental allergies may cause skin disease, which is called ‘atopic dermatitis’. This can be a frustrating disorder to deal with, but with a considered and systematic approach, even the worst cases can usually be vastly improved. Atopic dermatitis is usually caused by an adverse skin reaction to one or more of the following: • • •
Mites (for example, dust mites); Household moulds; Tree, weed and grass pollens.
Atopic dermatitis is a lifelong condition that in many cases will require lifelong control. However, patients with this condition also commonly have concurrent problems such as flea allergies, food hypersensitivities and skin infections.
The most common signs associated with atOpic dermatitis are: • • • • • •
Scratching; Face rubbing; Nibbling and chewing; Hair loss; Red, crusting or discharging skin; Ear infections.
However, these signs are not only caused by allergies- other conditions that can cause similar symptoms include: • • • • • • • •
Fleas; Food reactions; Reactions to direct contact (e.g. cleaning products); Mites; Fungal and bacterial infections; Hormonal disorders; Liver disease; Psychological problems. ANYTHING SWINDON
There are lots of treatment options, and these will be tailored to the individual. No matter what, it’s really important to undertake a through parasite prevention (or treatment) regime- your pet’s skin condition will only get worse if they pick-up skin parasites too. The other therapies commonly used include shampoos, essential fatty acids, specialized diets, anti-histamines, anti-inflammatories and antibiotics, as well as treatments specifically designed to treat skin allergies. Acupuncture can also be considered. In addition, where an environmental allergy has been diagnosed, your vet will discuss ways in which you can try to avoid or reduce your pet’s exposure to the specific allergens. Skin disease can be stressful for both you and your pet, and sometimes the situation can feel hopeless, particularly if you’ve been dealing with the condition for a long time. It’s important to be realistic about what improvement can be achieved. Some pets have such severe skin allergies that they will still have intermittent problems. In other (and hopefully the majority of) cases, a patient’s skin condition can be improved to such an extent that they rarely, if ever, have any more problems. The latter can only be achieved with patience and strict adherence to an investigation (and treatment) plan, as decided between you and your vet, but with effective team work between you, your pet and your vet, there’s a lot that can be achieved!

Chestnut Clinic brings you the Secret of Martial Medicine Through the ancient art of Japanese Physical Therapy (Amatsu) let us show you how we can help you with Sciatica, Whiplash, Sports Injuries, RSI, Backaches, Joint mobility and many more.
Paul has been awarded one of only five assistant teaching licences in the UK. Paul continues to work closely with Chris teaching the next generation of practitioners.
Our unique head to toe balance gives your body the best chance to heal itself. What is Amatsu and why have I not heard of this therapy ? Amatsu is a blend of modern research, and an ancient Japanese Physical Therapy that dates back approximately five thousand years. It was first brought to the UK from Japan in 1995 by three Westerners; Dr Chris Roworth Phd, Dennis Bartram and William Doolan. They were taught and granted Master Teaching Licenses by Dr. Hatsumi, who holds the original scrolls detailing Amatsu’s principles and methodology. He is also the grandmaster of nine martial arts schools of Ninjutsu. Chestnut clinic Swindon’s owner and senior practitioner, Paul Stubbs, has trained directly with Chris Roworth for the past five years and has qualified in Japanese Physical Medicine including Japanese acupuncture.
Paul has trained for over 20 years in the martial art of Ninjutsu and has been awarded the rank of 15th Dan (master teacher) by Dr Hatsumi. This has worked as the perfect grounding for understanding the complexities and movements of the human body, needed to understand and diagnose the underlying problems of external injuries. Unlike many other therapies, Amatsu uses a combination of gentle techniques that works with both the body’s soft tissue and skeletal structure to rebalance the whole body, rather than just the injury site, healing is quicker, more efficient and longer lasting. A Swindon based dental practice has been nominated as a finalist in another prestigious award. Following on from their nomination for best practice at the dentistry awards late last year, Smiles Centre have now been named as a finalist for the Wiltshire Business of the Year 2016 for “Outstanding Excellence Award” The business was founded in 2000 when brother’s Stuart and Simon moved to Swindon and set-up as a dental laboratory serving local dentists.

going above and beyond to deliver an exceptional service, I cannot tell you how exciting it is to be considered for this award” and Simon Miles added “One of our goals is to employ young people on the various Apprenticeship schemes and that takes a lot of time and effort but it’s also extremely rewarding too, it creates lot’s of opportunities for our staff as we continue to grow” This year, Smiles will be launching a Dental Academy in Swindon to help train even more people to the highest standards.

The year “off” of the Gav fortunately you’ll have to wait until April edition for endless photographs of the Big Apple as my deadline for March edition is the 18th March. Feel free to follow me directly via Instagram @gavellisiow, if you can’t wait until then.
March seemed to be the very nemesis of February!
Between the beginning of March and my American adventure beginning, I have been staying with my parents on the beautiful Isle of Wight. I cannot recommend this place highly enough. For escapism, for a break, for an adventure and just to get away, you have to come here. Its full of unspoilt seaside towns, amazing country and coastal walks and some of the most underrated scenery in the British Isles.
full of opportunity and choice. There are those that think money is the root of all evil but unfortunately, in this instance, it is a necessary evil. Ever since I watched the tv series Around the world in 80 days with Michael Palin, I’ve been interested in travel. And it’s not even the actual destination that is the most intriguing. For some reason, I thoroughly enjoy the actual journey. Planes, trains, boats, trams and walking just appeal to me. As long as there is a final destination. I like getting to places. I will also enjoy the destination upon arrival but I’m not one of those that sees travel as merely a means to an end.
My pictures from this month come from the Island. Maybe it is a little slow on the uptake of modern technology, maybe it is like England 30 years ago and maybe it is a little forgotten and old fashioned. I genuinely feel that it benefits from these points and you can truly get lost in the best kind of way on the Isle of Wight. If you haven’t been I recommend it. The nicest collection of people you are likely to find. Until again my friends, until again
With the money from the sale of my flat confirmed and transferred and after a little adjusting for contingency, I’m off.

Rotary Club of Swindon Thamesdown. Walkley Walk 2016. The “Walkley Walk” has been staged by the Rotary Club of Swindon Thamesdown for the last 27 years, raising in excess of £275,000.00 for charities. The 2016 “Walkley Walk” will take place over a twenty mile section of the Ridgeway on Saturday 11th June 2016. It will start at 11pm at Avebury and finishing at the Nationwide car park in Pipers Way. Walkers will be able to park their vehicles at the check in at Nationwide prior to being bussed to the starting point at Avebury. The event will be fully marshalled, feeding stations will be provided and a tail-end Charlie will follow the walkers to administer any first-aid required and return any walker not wishing to cover the full distance, to the car park. This year the walk has been linked with the Brighter Futures appeal, to raise funds to purchase the linear accelerators for the new Radiotherapy unit currently being built at the Great Western Hospital.
In conjunction with brighter futures fundraising for the Swindon Radiotherapy Unit and other charities
As usual, participants have total control of which charity they chose to support and how they raise the sponsorship. Due to the urgent need for the linear accelerators, those walking for a dedicated charity are respectfully requested to consider donating a proportion of their sponsorship to Brighter Futures on this occasion. Registration for the walk may be completed on-line at www.walkleywalk.org.uk or by downloading the form and posting it. The walk takes place in some of the most attractive areas of the Wiltshire countryside and is open to all ages and abilities. While mainly on public rights of way the terrain can, in places, be challenging and it is essential stout footwear and appropriate clothing is warn. Many charities, predominantly local, have benefited from the proceeds of the walk and the Rotary Club of Swindon Thamesdown hopes to encourage a record entry this year. Please give them your support.

Old Town Festival Update
Come and join in the Old Town Festival Parade. This is my second year of running the iconic parade as part of the Old Town Festival. Last year was so successful, I couldn’t resist the challenge for another year. In 2015 we had over 20 groups and we hope to have around the same amount this year with lots of variety and talent! We welcome anything from local businesses to high energy performance groups.
Kitty Langan, a former Commonweal student, runs her own successful Performing Arts School of the same name. Her school based in Greenmeadow Swindon offer private singing lessons, group dancing lessons and recording sessions. They regularly sign up to take part in local events as well as singing & dancing competitions which gives their talented students the opportunity to perform and gain more exposure in the land of showbiz. There is access to current music tracks to maximise your training potential and offer the opportunity to take singing & dancing examinations if required.
Old Town Festival branching out to help TWIGS. Every year members of Old Town Festival committee vote on a charity and the nominees are suggestion from members of the committee and the public. This year TWIGS won the vote!
The parade judged by 3 guest judges are yet to be decided, but it adds to the excitement and having a prize to compete for makes it even more worthwhile. It’s a great way to advertise and showcase your organisation to thousands of different people. It’s always such a great day; especially if the sun is shining and with so many great events going on as well as the parade, it’s a fantastic day for the whole family. The closing date to apply is 1st May 2016. If you would like your organisation to take part in the parade, get in touch via email: info@kittylanganstudio.com and I can send over all the appropriate paperwork for you to complete and return. Councillor Updates Walcot & Park North Councillors- Emma Bushell, Steve Allsopp & Abdul Amin The Council is currently consulting on plans to introduce car-parking fees at Coate Water. The survey will run until Friday, 29 April 2016. Have your say at: www.swindon.gov.uk/info/20019/consultations_engagement_ and_surveys/634/coate_water_parking_consultation Work continues to progress on the Sussex Square Development. 12 newly built flats will be gradually occupied from March. Work on an additional 36 dwellings will then begin alongside ongoing infrastructure work. We would like to again thank residents for their patience while the work is completed. Work is expected to begin on the construction of New College’s 3G football pitch on the Shrewsbury Road Fields in the next few months. Councillors have been working hard with partners including New College and Wiltshire FA to draw up a Community Use Agreement to ensure access for the local community. The Council has announced plans to develop the Oakfield Campus on Marlowe Avenue. This land has always been earmarked for housing and we hope that the project will go some way to meeting Swindon’s housing need. The Council has committed to a process of community engagement and public consultation as the plans are developed. It is not expected that any building work will start before 2017.
Councillor Nadine Watts – Old Town & East Wichel. nadine.watts@live.co.uk - 07595 071381 Old Town Tower - I am pleased that the proposed plans for the 14 storey “Old Town Tower” have been withdrawn. So many local residents were against this proposal which was so out of character with Old Town. We hope that the developers will listen and work with local people to develop plans for a building that is more in keeping with the area. East Wichel – the parking restrictions have now been signed off. Implementation is currently planned for October this year. I’ll keep you updated. Library Campaign – urgent action is needed to save Swindon’s library service. There are plans to slash the library budget by 65%. Emerging plans show only Central library would continue in its current form. Others could be run on a volunteer basis or be at risk of closure. Please sign the petition: www.outhswindonlabour.co.uk/2016/02/petition-save-swindons-libraries
Des Moffatt Labour Councillor Rodbourne Cheney. We had a fabulous clean-up day at Rodbourne Green Residents Association when up to 50 people joined in. All around the Green and surrounding area was litter picked completely and much of Plaums Pit leisure area. Still quite a lot to do around Plaums and if we can find the volunteers we would just love to have another one as soon as we can, centred on the track between Plaums and Kiln Lane. We need to get on with it so that the rubbish is not covered with new vegetation growth. If you are up for this contact Des on: fendessy@yahoo.co.uk leaving contact details.
Cllr Russell Holland, Stratton St.Margaret and South Marston. Conservative I am really pleased to report some progress on some projects I have been working on for some time. The first is a crossing on Grange Drive as part of the school safety zone. The second is a crossing on Bridge End Road by the Dockle. These will start very soon. I am also working closely with Justin Tomlinson MP and the Post Office to look to see how we can support an alternative post office in Stratton after the closure of the office in Rainer Close. The Post Office have been very supportive so I hope to report some progress soon. Residents are always very welcome to get in touch at any time either direct 07914569256 or at our monthly surgery on the last Saturday of each month 10-11am at Grange Drive Community Centre. We also have a growing facebook page Stratton St.Margaret and South Marston in Touch. Please do get in touch I am always happy to help.

MP Update
Robert Buckland Update Like many local residents, I was relieved to hear that the plans for a tower block in Old Town have been pulled. As your local MP, I am very much in favour of improvements in Old Town, but these plans were wholly inappropriate and out of place for one of the most historic parts of Swindon. I would really like to see progress on the refurbishment of some of our existing buildings like the Corn Exchange and on Victoria Hill, for example. This decision is a real testament to people power, so thanks to all those who made their voice heard by organising and signing the petition that grew in number so quickly. I hope that any revised plans are more appropriate and cater properly for parking too. I was delighted to attend the annual general meeting at St Joseph’s Church Hall in Wroughton for CALM (Children’s Cancer and Leukaemia Movement) recently, based here in Swindon. I would like to say a huge thank you to the committee and in particular to David Elliss, for his outstanding service for many years as Treasurer. As ever, please do not hesitate to contact me if you have a local or national issue that you would like to raise at one of my regular surgeries. Please get in touch with my office if you would like to book an appointment (01793 533393).

Justin Timlinson MP A budget for local businesses Businesses are the lifeblood of the economy. They create jobs, stimulate growth and play a vital role in the communities they serve. Last week, the Chancellor delivered a Budget that backs business by cutting costs for small businesses and simplifying the system. As a former small business owner, I know only too well that one of the biggest costs any company faces comes in the form of Business Rates. Currently, small business rate relief is only permanently available to firms whose property has a rateable value of less than £6,000. In the Budget, the Chancellor rightly recognised this and more than doubled the maximum threshold to £15,000. He also increased threshold for the higher rate from £18,000 to £51,000. So from April next year, 600,000 small businesses will pay no business rates at all. That’s an annual saving of up to £6,000. It means: •
A typical corner shop in Gorse Hill will pay no business rates.
•
A typical hairdressers in Mannington will pay no business rates.
•
A typical newsagents in Stratton will pay no business rates.
It’s a permanent long-term saving for businesses in Swindon. Additionally, the Chancellor has made important changes to Stamp Duty for companies who want expand and move in to bigger premises. By simplifying the system, 90% of businesses who move into a new, larger premise will see the Stamp Duty they pay cut. And to help deliver long-term investment, the Chancellor has announced that the Corporation Tax will be cut to 17% in 2020 – the lowest anywhere in the G7. This was a Budget that rightly recognised the vital role of business in delivering a secure, growing economy and these changes will ensure that our local businesses thrive in a town on the up.

“CaféNexus was a bit of a secret, tucked away on Cheney Manor. Opened in 2013 it was designed to serve the business occupiers of Nexus Business Centre. Even more of a secret is its waterside terrace overlooking the fishing lagoon. The café is managed by Alun Robbins who cooks all food from fresh. Breakfasts include free range eggs and butchers’ sausages and there are over 20 dishes on the deli bar including rare Scottish beef, smoked salmon and every conceivable salad. With an eye to healthy eating he roasts his vegetables without oil, steams the broccoli, doesn’t add salt where he doesn’t need to and, if his regular

Advice for small businesses
Should I set up a pension through my Company (owned with my wife)? Or pay it from my own income?
Firstly, you should consult a Financial Advisor to set up a pension scheme. If the Company pays for the contributions, you’ll both share the tax relief. If you make the contributions from your own income after taxes, you will receive all the tax relief. If one of you is a Higher Rate Tax payer (taxable income over £42,385), then you should try to make sure that the tax relief goes to the higher earner. However, from April 2016, the new dividend tax

payments paid from dividends.

Sports and Fitness
April is another significant month in the Bowling calendar, when the weather changes and the bowls fraternity get their outdoor kit ready for action. The greens have been lovingly tended over the winter and the best lawns in Swindon will soon be trodden by those of us who play the most underrated summer sport of them all.
The last 18 months or so have seen major changes at Westlecot Bowls Club, and the clubhouse facilities are now much improved. Changing rooms, lounge and kitchen areas have all been updated to the high standards befitting one of the premier sports clubs in the County.
The 2016 outdoor season promises to be another busy, fun and hopefully successful playing year. Wiltshire has been nominated by Sport England as a Bowls Hot Spot county, which means that emphasis will be put on the Bowls Clubs in the county as part of a development plan to raise the sport’s profile. Westlecot has already begun its own programme, taking bowls to the Commonweal School during one lunchtime a week for 12 sessions, as we try to widen the sports’ appeal.
The outdoor Bowls green officially opens on 16th April and we are holding Open Days on Saturday 23rd April and Saturday 28th May, when everyone is welcome to come along and try the game out. Club members will be on hand to welcome and give advice and help to newcomers. All ages from 8 to 80 will be welcome – all you need are flat soled shoes, and the Club will provide any other necessary equipment. Anyone who registers interest at the Open Days will then be able to come along for weekly tasters at regular beginners’ sessions. If you can’t make the scheduled Open Days, and want to know more, call John or Jane on 01793 684455.
