Stretching
A tried-and-true recovery technique is stretching before and after your workout to allow your muscles to warm up and cool down, respectively, enhancing your flexibility and mobility.
Two types of stretching include dynamic and static. Dynamic stretching is most effective when performed before exercising. Dynamic stretching is movement-based mobilization of the body through different patterns (for example, squatting, lunging, single leg stance) and planes of motion. The goal is to increase the activation of the muscles that will be used during a workout.
Static stretching is most effective after completing a workout, static stretching involves slowly moving a muscle to the end of its range of motion and holding the position for 3060 seconds for up to four rounds. Because static stretching elongates the muscles for a period of time, it can lead to temporary weakness afterward. So get up slowly.

As noted last month, the AFC pool is slated to have two additional heaters installed, new decking, backstroke flags and new ladders, all scheduled for completion in May. In addition, a presentation was made on updating the flooring in the gym area and hallway. It's on the list to be replaced this year. Thank you to Cliff Miller for doing all the research.
The committee will convene in September and begin our monthly meetings. Have a great summer.
Architectural Inspection Group
Conveyance Coordinator, Jack Mooney, 520-917-8087, scoroval@ciramail.com
What happens if someone sells their home without a listing inspection being done? SCOV will be electronically notified that a home is under contract. As required by law, the Association must complete what is called an escrow inspection if a listing inspection has not been done in the past ninety days. Violations found during this inspection are submitted directly to the title company, with the seller and buyer receiving a copy of the report. SCOV will not reinspect those violations until after the close of escrow. In most cases, a listing inspection is preferred as it gives the seller time to consider addressing the violations listed against the property prior to going into escrow rather than trying to negotiate them during escrow.
Please keep in mind, you must have a listing or escrow inspection completed before closing escrow. To request an inspection, go to the SCOV Member webpage > Member Services > Sell Your Home. Complete and submit the short form. For further details, please contact the Conveyance Coordinator at the Welcome Center or by calling 520-917-8087.

Architectural Review
Jim Cherry 612-805-5637 ARC@suncityorovalley.com
Zoom meetings Second and Fourth Tue., 2 pm
This spring, the Architectural Review Committee reviewed a number of gutter/downspout projects. For this type of work, be sure to keep three components for the submittal in mind:
1. The color of the gutters must closely match the trim and the downspouts must also closely match the home base color. If the manufacturer finishes are not closely matching, then make plans to have the material painted once installed.
2. The downspouts need to be directing water away from the home and towards the established water flows of the yard. For many, those are the dry river bed set-ups.
3. Water should flow to the sides of the property and then forward to the streets or down the driveway.
It continues to be amazing that we spend so much time in the desert focused on water drainage.
Code of Conduct Review Board
Chair Marlene Branz, 618-670-1063 cconduct@suncityorovalley.com
The SCOV Code of Conduct (COC) defines civil behavior for residents and their guests. The COC shall be followed when using SCOV facilities, common areas, digital and written interactions. When buying a home in SCOV, every homeowner is presented with a copy of SCOV’s governing documents including the Owner & Resident Handbook in which you can find the COC on page 5: Members > Documents > Owner & Resident Handbook.
By adhering to the COC, we maintain mutual respect, honesty and courtesy with our fellow residents and others who enjoy SCOV public spaces. Let’s all do our best to make SCOV the best place to live.

Artist of the month is Melanie Stinson, who started painting around five years of age. She attended college as an art major, discovered clay, and was hooked immediately. Melanie tells us, "After college, I purchased my own wheel, kiln and supplies and started a studio in my home. My pieces were sold at various art fairs in the 70s and 80s, and commissions from people wanting sets of dishes. Back then, most of my wares were meant for functional use.
"I had to take a 20-year hiatus, but I knew that when I re-

tired I wanted to pursue clay again. Luckily, we found SCOV and moved here in 2018. I can get lost in pottery for hours and things just sometimes happen without really setting a plan in my head. My favorite clay is Hawaiian red. The glazes do well and the redness of the clay finishes beautifully with firing."
Are you creative? Do you enjoy meeting new people?

Previously, we used capital letters for AM and PM. This month, you will notice that we are using am and pm.
Many thanks to those of you who follow our Submitter Guidelines. They exist to achieve consistency throughout the Tipster. Since so much of the Tipster is about meetings and events, submissions that list the day, date, time, place in that order are much appreciated.

Director of Golf Maintenance - Michael Kropf scvgolf@suncityorovalley.com 520-917-8063
Last year (2021-2022) the fairways were not overseeded to give the Bermuda grass a much-needed break after years of consecutive overseeding. As a result, the conditions of the fairways last summer were excellent with a full canopy of Bermuda grass. In contrast, the conditions of the fairways this June will not be as nice as last year due to the process of transitioning out the ryegrass from this year’s overseeding.
The process of transitioning out the ryegrass actually starts in March with a low-rate herbicide application that slows the growth of the ryegrass. The herbicide is very specific to ryegrass and has no impact on the underlying Bermuda grass that is beginning to green up. By slowing down the growth of the ryegrass, the Bermuda grass has less competition for sunlight, nutrients and water to come out of dormancy more efficiently. In June, a different low-rate herbicide that eliminates ryegrass and Poa annua is applied.
Mechanical processes are also performed to thin out the ryegrass. Verticutting is performed in multiple directions to open up the canopy. Deep-tine aeration relieves compaction, which opens areas for the Bermuda grass to spread. Irrigation is closely monitored for moisture levels; too wet creates a salt buildup that thins Bermuda grass, and too dry causes Bermuda grass to desiccate and die.

We are now in summer season rates as we come to the end of our fiscal year on June 30. The membership renewals for annual 9- or 18hole memberships begin July 1. First time annual members who join by June 1 can play 13 months for the price of 12 months.
Here are some benefits of becoming an annual 9- or 18hole member.
• 18-hole memberships receive 9-day advance tee times
• 9-hole memberships receive 8-day advance tee times
• Unlimited driving range privileges.
• Receive 25% off Pro Shop apparel and 10% off accessories, equipment, shoes, hats, and golf balls (excluding sale items. No discounts available to the online Pro Shop).
• Members' and SCOV residents’ guests receive a discounted golf rate.
• Members receive a complimentary guest pass on their account.
• Annual 9- or 18-hole memberships may split their payment and pay half in July and the balance in October. Whether you’re living here year-round or seasonally, we offer a Hybrid Membership with a reduced daily golf fee. It is a lower annual fee, and you pay as you play. It does not include the rental cart, tax or range privileges.
June 1 through September 17, we are offering a Summer Golf Pass for $197. It includes golf and cart fee of $25 for 9- or 18-holes with 7-day advance tee times.
Despite all these efforts, the fairways will have thin brown areas following aeration and topdressing in June. This happens when one grass is being removed to encourage another grass to fill in. By July, the fairways will return to good condition again.

Hello to the hardy NineHolers who will be here this summer. We are now on the summer schedule, which means regular league play with a shotgun start on the first Thursday of the month, followed by the next three Thursdays playing a skins game.
The skins games are set up by tee times starting at 7 am with a total number of players set at 24. However, if more sign up to play, the tee times will extend to accommodate the additional players. As we learned last summer, the skins game favors those players who are not the steady players but those who have that one great hole far exceeding their handicap. The charge to play skins is $5 and the charge for the league play on the first Thursday is $4.
Remember, you do not need to be a Views passholder to join the league and play on Thursday. You simply need to pay the standard greens fee for that day. So, if you are looking for something to do on Thursday mornings, join the league and come out and play. And as always, “Half the time, twice the fun.”

"A picture is worth a thousand words."
Photography Club members know that this quote is an understatement, for photographs often tell stories that can't be described in words.
For some time, the Photography Club used an outdated projector to project images for review and evaluation. The equipment no longer met the club's needs, so the club applied for, and received a grant from your Foundation for a new projector, laptop computer and accessories.
“The new system has exceeded our expectations,” says club president Ed Caine. “Thank you for your support.” Examples of the Photography Club members’ work adorns the walls in SCOV buildings. Ansel Adams would be proud.

Announces a Convenient New Digital Gift Card
Did you know that you can now purchase a digital gift card that can be used at The Bistro? With the "card" on your phone, you don't need cash or a credit card to get that quick latte after a meeting or class.
To get a digital card, stop by The Bistro. Tell the barista how much money you want to put on the "card." They will enter either your phone number or email where you will receive the card information that you can save to your phone's wallet, then all you do is have the barista scan the card on your phone to pay for your beverage. You can even give a digital gift card to a friend. Give the barista the phone number or email to send it to, and that person will receive a text or email message. The gift can even be personalized with a message such as "Happy birthday. Enjoy a treat from The Bistro." Right now the digital gift card is the only option, but we're looking into physical cards for the future.
We have a special deal this month, for one day only: Wednesday, June 14, buy a digital card valued at $65 for only $50! That's about four free lattes. Come see us and enjoy the lattes, wine and snacks while you visit with a friend and get a great deal on a digital gift card only at The Bistro.

Clay
So what do potters do with all the clay that results from trimming pots, broken greenware (oh darn) and just plain leftover clay? We recycle it, of course.
The recycling process begins by covering a five gallon pail of clay with water for four or five days, during which time it turns to mush. Then, the water is drained and Kentucky Ball Clay is added, firming up the mixture. Next, the clay is spread on a plaster board to dry. It helps to draw deep lines through the slab to make sure the clay dries underneath. When ready, five pounds of the recycled clay is put into bags and sold for a nominal amount.
This type of clay is an economical choice for all members and especially for our new members as they go through orientation. Currently, Pam Curren is the volunteer for this task of recycling clay. Thank you Pam.

Japanese Flower Arranging
Donald Marier 612-757-8373 dolmar21@gmail.com
Jan.-May, Second and Fourth Mon., 2-4 pm, Catalina Vista/Pusch Ridge
Japanese flower arranging, ikebana, is the art of arranging flowers, branch materials, grasses and leaves. At its core is the beauty resulting from a combination of color, shapes and graceful lines. More than simple floral decoration, it is a form of sculpture with plant materials. Learn from certified instructors at your own pace and make creative arrangements for your home.
Knit and Crochet
Jane Fairchild 520-909-5069 janemail11@yahoo.com Mon., 2:30-4:30 pm, Activity Center/Hohokam
If you have a knit or crochet project, or would like to learn, come join us. An ongoing group project is making crocheted mats out of plastic shopping bags. You can participate in this project by cutting the bags into strips, stringing the strips into plastic yarn (plarn) and/or crocheting them into mats.
If you wish to donate bags, flatten clean Fry’s, Safeway or Walmart bags and stack them by color. You can then fold all the stacks over into one; no need to fasten them together. This effort on your part greatly streamlines the cutting and crochet process. Do not include newspaper bags as they do not work for this project. Bags can be dropped into a basket on Jane Fairchild’s front porch any time at 1750 E. Crown Ridge Way. ode

While the miniatures we build showcase our artistic skills, they also represent part of the real world, not just objects but real things having stories behind them. Our club frequently invites speakers who can share that history with us.
In April, Brad Watson, son of our treasurer, Robert Watson, shared the story of Bikini Atoll in the Marshall Islands where he once worked. This small and remote dot in the Pacific was the site of 23 atomic bomb tests beginning in 1946. We learned about the impact on the people who had lived on the island, results of the tests using mothballed U.S. Navy ships, and the ongoing impact on the ecosystem of this group of islands. Our speakers are announced in "This Week in SCOV" and our monthly meetings are open to all.

We want to express our gratitude to Jean Sax for leading our group for some 20 years and thank her for all the time and work she put into the group. She promised that she will not be just taking a new seat in the audience, but will guide us when her experience is needed and also volunteer for tasks. I am pleased to say that we have had another hand raised to help in the co-president position when she returns in the fall. I will wait to disclose her name until her return. If anyone else is interested in such a position, please let me hear from you.
Summer has arrived, and we are all busy at home and in the shops preparing for the winter festivities of 2023. The shelves are bursting with quilts, soft toys, wooden toys and items to sell at the Arts and Crafts Fair and the Gift Shop. We are planning for Kuddles for Kids, the toy distribution and adopt-a-child programs. We have a pair of members who have volunteered to handle the food service at the Arts and Crafts Fair as a fund raiser for Seniors for Kids. Thank you to Joyce and Chic. Our plate seems pretty full, but the cause is very worth it. Living is giving and giving is living. Please have a delightful summer.

Those of us who are in the Sewing Room during the summer months are few but mighty. The needs of the community do not stop. We work in the cool, air-conditioned comfort of our room in the Artisan Center. If you would like to donate, we still need used sheets in reasonable condition that haven't been used to cover cacti. The need for remade crib sheets and twin fitted sheets from used sheets remains high. Thank you to those who have donated fabric and sheets to our many causes.

We are happy to accept donations of flannel and polyfil to keep our assembly line running at top speed and get plenty of these bears on the shelves.
We always look forward to seeing your smiling faces.

The Tapestry Hooking and Fiber Arts group meets on Tuesday mornings in the Sewing Room. If you are interested in our group, stop by to see what we do. The group provides materials and instruction for those interested in learning hooking. People involved in other arts using fiber are invited and encouraged to join our group.
The picture illustrates two felting projects by Carol Sallmann. Felting is just one of many fiber arts. There are two processes for felting, one is referred to as “wet” and the other “dry.” Carol used the dry or needle felting technique for her two projects. The materials used are wool roving and a felting (barbed) needle. Felting is the process used to create a textile by combining and compressing loose fibers. The technique is to push and pull the needle through the roving to tangle or intermingle the fibers to create a matted piece of material/felt.

Laurie Volocyk is our featured artist this month. She joined the Silversmith and Lapidary Club in January of this year, and under Ric’s tutelage, cut, shaped and polished her first cabochons. "I recently decided to make hearts from a piece of chrysocalla I had purchased at the Gem Show. After cutting my stone in the lapidary, I fine-tuned the shapes on the finishing saw, followed by a lot of polishing. The end result is six hearts, perfect for creating two sets of earrings and pendants." Laurie is one of our many outstanding new members who are becoming skilled in lost wax casting and lapidary.
SCOV residents interested in joining should visit the shop and speak to the monitor about scheduling training. New member training is held monthly on the second Tuesday and Wednesday.

Jane and Bill Honeywell have been attracted to the medium of glass for many years. They attended an exhibition of the great glass artist, Dale Chihuly, and were quickly “hooked.”
Interestingly, Jane calls herself a serial hobbyist. She belongs to the Tapestry & Fiber Arts Group in SCOV, and loves quilting, painting watercolors and spent years creating glass mosaics.
Bill enjoys woodworking and has a present goal of completing a glass sunflower garden in his backyard. Because of their allure to glass, Jane and Bill joined our glass club shortly after moving here. They enjoy the camaraderie and look forward to continuously learning new glass-making skills shared by the expertise of members. Future glass goals for Jane include fulfilling numerous requests from relatives. Bill’s future glass goals include a kinetic art mobile. Come and visit us soon.

We will return to the pleasure of stimulating discussions in October. Social science research has shown that those who engage in substantial conversations report relatively high levels of satisfaction with life. We find that, even if we come to no definitive conclusions about the material we’ve read,
We are continuing our regular meeting schedule over the summer as an opportunity for us to gather together in small groups in the Genealogy Library to share our questions, quandaries, quarry hunts, quick tricks, quantum leaps, quizzes and more. Our topic for the Tuesday, June 13, discussion is “How Do I Get Started or Where Do I Go Next?” Whether you’re a total novice or have been researching for years, come to get or give advice to each other while connecting with other members. If you aren’t already a member, you are welcome to come check us out.

What if you didn’t marry your high school sweetheart? What if the South had won the American Civil War? What if we cared for our neighbors and they all returned the favor?
Christa Lubatkin, long-time Poets Corner member, addresses the familiar theme of “what if” in the lyrical language of poetry and her own evocative style, adding just a smidgeon of hope to the many possible sorrows:
what if no gracious clouds / sail across blue skies / and mountains are lost in choking fog
what if tears dry up / and oceans no longer hold / the salt of our lives
what if your arms stiffen / and your smile leaves a somber face / in the dirge of these days
what if requiems stall in mid-air / elegies’ last laments lay barren / on chapel floors / would love’s winged heart still soar
Poetry offers so many doors to open and explore. Join our weekly Zoom meetings from wherever you spend the summer.

Plans are to continue periodic iPhone and Android classes as well as many more technical classes like “How the Internet Works,” “How Cell Phones Work,” and maybe a little more on TV alternatives and smart home applications. Don’t forget, these classes are indoors and are a less boring alternative to hibernating in our houses. See you there if you have a hankering to expand your tech horizons.

If you ever wanted to write a story, a poem, a script, a commercial or even a song, come to one of our meetings and meet our band of writers. You receive a prompt for the next meeting to either follow or create your own. It's fun to write, share and review what we write.
Spurge Reminder
Please remove spurge from your yards. Spurge is a creeping, lowgrowing weed that is often found in the cracks of driveways and the gaps between the sidewalk and street. It also grows abundantly in river rock.

With seasonal folks leaving for the summer and many people vacationing, the park is getting quieter. But even in the heat of summer, the dogs enjoy the open space to run, explore and socialize.
Groups use the space in early morning and early evening. Both the dogs and their humans enjoy the cooler times. Less socialized dogs or those who can’t make the group gatherings, come at other times to enjoy the park, too. We are grateful to have a place to allow them freedom and running space all year around.

We had a marvelous pick of citrus this spring. We distributed a lot of grapefruit, oranges, lemons and much sought after kumquats around SCOV and to the food bank in Catalina. Now we are looking for other edibles to pick that may be growing in your yard. If you are a seasonal resident, let us know if you have figs or pomegranates we can pick while you are away. If there is something else we may not have thought of, let us know. And if you would like to join our merry band of pickers, contact Joan Partridge. No dues or obligation, just come when you can. We usually pick on Saturday mornings.
