Food and Beverage Chair Bob Landis landisrc@gmail.com Next meeting Thu., Sep. 1, 2 PM, WC3

Welcome to our new kitchen manager, Skeeter Reynolds. We’ll learn more about him next month. The committee will next meet September 1. An agenda for the meeting will be posted in late August. Friends of the Library Co-Pres. Kari Dufur karidufur@gmail.com Co-Pres. Carol Tombre mctombre@yahoo.com Treas. and Membership Andrea Houston ahoust2@lsu.edu

Last month you met our new co-presidents; this month meet our newest board members, Claire Wendt and Arlene Douglas.

Claire started her library career as a library aide at 16 in a small Wisconsin town. She continued working in libraries and ended her career as a library media specialist for an elementary school in Flagstaff. Her favorite genre is historical fiction, but she can be persuaded to read almost any book.

Arlene has volunteered at SCOV Library for five years and is an unapologetic book lover. Historical fiction is also her genre of choice. “I prefer to get my history wrapped around a story.” Arlene has graciously agreed to take on the role of secretary for Friends of the Library.

Check Coming Events on page 10 for information about our exciting Book Bingo.

Melanie Stinson

During this quieter time in SCOV, your Gift Shop remains a cool haven from heat and a lovely place to browse through the offerings of our resident artists and crafters. Featured artist this month is one of our talented potters, Melanie Stinson. “Influenced by my mother, who was an accomplished artist, I started painting around five years old. It wasn’t until I attended college as an art major that I discovered clay. From the moment I sat at one of the wheels I knew I was hooked.” Melanie offers functional pottery from her own wheel, finished with earthy glazes and decoration. Her items can be used in ovens, set on a table, decorate your home and even hung on walls indoors and out. Her work will also be offered at our next arts and crafts fair in November. Don’t miss it. Government Affairs Chair Earl Vittitoe earlvv@gmail.com Second Wed., 1 PM, WC1

Now that we are returning to a more normal life, it is time to get back to many of the things we did prior to the pandemic. Along those lines, the Government Affairs Committee is working on the engagement of our community with the Oro Valley Police Department. With the controversial issues of the past two years, many are interested how our police department is prepared to face these issues and how they are serving the community. We are sponsoring a community forum with Chief Kara Riley and members of the department to inform and solicit input from the community. Mark your calendar for Wednesday, August 24, 2 - 4 PM, Catalina Vista, and stay tuned for more forums in the future.

Is it Christmas in August? It’s starting to feel like it. While most of our workshop helpers are away for the summer, a few helpers are still busy plugging away at the lights. We have managed to put together one of our favorites, Jane’s Fantasy Flowers, for your viewing enjoyment later this year.
