From the Board of Directors
Our mission as the SCOV Board is to lead in maintaining and enhancing the quality of life in Sun City Oro Valley as an active adult community.

We've Come a Long Way
by Lou Gard
When Sharon and I moved here in November of 1995, there was only one other development on Rancho Vistoso Blvd. We were surprised to see Walgreens and the Rancho Vistoso Center which had not been built when we had last visited in February 1995. Del Webb would continue to build SCOV for another four years.
SCOV did not originally own the Welcome Center. A forward- thinking Board purchased the building in 2000.
Our name was changed from Sun City Vistoso to Sun City Oro Valley (SCOV) in 2007 after the Town of Oro Valley annexed the Rancho Vistoso area. The signage was updated throughout the community and along Rancho Vistoso Blvd.
The expansion of the Aquatic and Fitness Center was a contentious issue until the second proposal passed in 2013 with 74% of our residents in favor and approval of a $385 assessment for this much-needed renovation.
We have seen many other changes over the years. The restaurant was initially little more than a hot dog shack, known as the Golfers Grill. The first renovation seemed to go on forever. There did not seem to be a plan, and there was no budget. The Pro Shop was moved to its present location and the lounge and patio were added to The Views Restaurant, which now offers a full menu.
In recent years, the Desert Oasis was given a major renovation and to a lesser extent the Catalina Vista.
Three years ago, the greens on the The Views Golf Course were updated to USGA standards and the driving range and putting green were enlarged to accommodate larger groups.
The renovation of our 36-year-old Activity Center which reopened in January, is a complete success.
The purchase of the Copper Center has added another exciting chapter to our legacy. The Administration will move there at some point. At this writing, the Copper Center Renovation Task Force has not made any decisions about what other entities will relocate there.
There have been many other updates to SCOV that have kept it looking fresh, not only for our residents but to attract potential buyers. Updates to our community keep our home
values at a high level. When I conduct Ambassador Tours, many visitors are impressed with our tidy neighborhoods and upgraded facilities.

Respectful Communication
In a world filled with diverse perspectives and opinions, effective communication has become more crucial than ever. At the heart of successful communication lies a fundamental principle: treating each other with respect. The way we interact and express ourselves can greatly impact the quality of our relationships, both personal and professional. Therefore, it is imperative that we recognize and uphold the importance of respect in our communications.
Respectful communication fosters an environment of understanding and empathy. When we approach conversations with respect, we create a space where individuals feel valued and heard. This cultivates a sense of trust and openness, allowing for meaningful connections. By acknowledging the inherent worth of each person, we create a foundation for healthy dialogue that encourages collaboration and cooperation.
Moreover, respectful communication promotes effective problem-solving. When we engage with others respectfully, we can better navigate disagreements and conflicts. Instead of resorting to aggressive or dismissive behaviors, we seek common ground, explore alternative viewpoints, and find mutually beneficial solutions. By acknowledging that everyone has unique experiences and perspectives, and actively listening and considering these differences, we can broaden our own understanding and find innovative resolutions.
Furthermore, respectful communication builds positive relationships. When we communicate respectfully, we create a positive impression and demonstrate our regard for others. This paves the way for lasting connections built on trust, support and mutual respect. Respectful interactions not only benefit us personally but also contribute to the overall harmony within our community, workplace and society as a whole.
In conclusion, the importance of treating each other with respect in our communications cannot be overstated. By embracing respect as a guiding principle, we enhance our ability to connect with others, solve problems effectively, and foster positive relationships. Let us strive to communicate with empathy, patience, and understanding, making respect the cornerstone of our interactions. Together, we can create an SCOV community where communication bridges gaps, promotes harmony, and uplifts the human experience.

It’s More Than Living... It’s A Lifestyle!
It's My House. Why Does the ARC Care What I Do?
by SCOV Architectural Review Committee
One of the benefits of homeownership is being able to make changes or improvements to your home. A number of owners new to Sun City Oro Valley are excited to remodel or make improvements to their new homes without an understanding of the Development Standards. These exist to provide an overall framework and comprehensive set of guidelines to allow the community to develop and progress in an orderly and cohesive manner. They establish criteria for architectural style and design, landscape concepts, site improvements, colors and materials. They also establish a process for judicious review of changes within the community. These standards also set forth how the standards and guidelines may be changed or amended to better serve the needs of an evolving community. The Development Standards were establish by the original developer of SCOV and have been modified by the Board of Directors several times.
By Charter, the Architectural Review Committee (ARC) is tasked with maintaining "the aesthetic harmony of Sun City Oro Valley in keeping with the desert environment and architectural character of the Sonoran Desert Southwest." ARC has developed procedures for the preparation, submission and approval of homeowner applications for alterations to their homes. While some homeowners may find the application and approval process tedious and restrictive, one needs only take a stroll or drive through the community to see that the end result of ARC approvals is a well-kept community that continues to reflect the cohesiveness of the original development.
Sound complicated? It is. Add Tract Declarations to the items that have to be taken into consideration before you make any exterior modifications to your home. As the community was built out, each of the 35 Units has its own Tract Declaration that may impose additional requirements.
Here to assist with the process are the volunteer ARC members along with SCOV staff who are here to help with your application to make changes. Talk to Architectural Coordinator, Katy Mosier, before you start your project. Katy can tell you whether your project, such as exterior paint, just
needs a simple form or an expansion to your square footage will require notification of neighbors and assurance that the expansion will not affect your neighbors views. Katy will guide you through the process and ensure that your application is ready for the ARC to review. This process can take weeks or months, so plan accordingly.
Homeowners who fail to maintain their home according to the Development Standards, may receive a Courtesy Notice from the Neighborhood Pride Committee (NPC). This committee regularly looks for items such as weeds, homes in need of painting, overgrown shrubs, etc. If a homeowner doesn't correct the violation in the Courtesy Notice, they may be charged a fine. Covenants Coordinator, Aimee Bennett, works with the NPC and can answer questions about violations. While living in an HOA can seem overwhelming, think of it as an insurance policy. The committees and Board of Directors exist to keep the community beautiful and financially stable. The amenities and facilities in SCOV are well maintained by the HOA and the neighborhoods reflect pride of ownership. We live in a desirable community where property values have risen consistently. So, if you've been thinking about painting your front door one of the new bright southwest colors, go for it. Just be sure to make a submittal on the website.
Making any change to the exterior of your home requires approval from the Association. Visit www.suncityorovalley.com > members > services > for-your-home to find everything you need. Prior to beginning a new exterior project, under What Do You Want to Do? make a selection. We’ll guide you the rest of the way. There is a $25 fee for most applications, $125 for home expansion and patio cover projects. There are some projects that do not require a fee. The fee will be requested in the submittal process.
The ARC meets the second and fourth Tuesday, 2 pm, by Zoom (link is on the website). The meetings are open to all homeowners. The Architectural Coordinator, Katy Mosier, is available by phone 520-917-8058 or email scoroval@ciramail.com.

Summer Projects
The Activity Center has a few last details that have been challenging to complete. Our General Manager has escalated the situation to the owner of the construction company and will be meeting with him on the remaining items. The audio visual (AV) is almost complete. Staff met with the AV company for a review of the systems, including the lighting in the Auditorium. They are finalizing the Auditorium system and there will be ongoing training for both staff and residents on the usage of the AV systems. Umbrellas have been placed on The Bistro patio. The last few signs have either been installed or are in the fabrication queue. There’s a new Activity Center sign on the building’s exterior, a timer on the outdoor firepit for ease of use, and a volume knob is being added to the Kiva Patio for the audio connections out there. The pathway light knocked over during construction has been reinstalled.
There are still some remaining issues, including the patio concrete which has settled creating an undesirable transitional space difference. This is on the punch list with the company owner. The door openers are our biggest concern. The construction company's vendor has had fabrication challenges, so this is still an issue to be resolved and one of the main topics of conversation with W. E. O’Neil Construction.
The AFC pool got a retouch this summer with new decking, new ladders and backstroke flags. Two new heaters were added which will improve the water temperature for the winter swimming season. The AFC gym and hallway flooring have been replaced as a cooperative effort between staff and the AFC committee’s recommendations.
Benches have been replaced at the miniature golf course and horseshoe pits.
A new calendar system is in place due to the work of Dan Stasi and Ronna Heinig. This new system gives clubs and committees the freedom to schedule their own rooms. Private usage will still be scheduled through the Association.
The Copper Center has been transitioned to our fire monitoring system. An internet provider will be selected, and wireless internet, telephones, secure access and observation cameras will be installed. A task force will be meeting to make recommendations for building usage. In the meantime, the Administration Department will transition to the new building, although specific timing has not been established. Looking ahead includes refreshing the restaurant’s interior and developing a new community website. More information on both projects will be coming.

Administrative Coordinators Monica Clark and Lisa Orach are very familiar faces here at SCOV. Monica began her career here in 2016, and just some of her duties are managing rental paperwork, approving paint submittals, and golf cart and RV registrations.
Lisa began her career at SCOV in 2012. A few of Lisa’s duties include answering questions, Tipster billing process, maintaining the rental spreadsheet and being the backup for the conveyance coordinator. While Monica and Lisa have similar duties, they also have duties that differ. Their customer service skills are remarkable, as they are so friendly and willing to help others. They are a real asset to the Administration Department.

Time to Paint?
520-917-8058
Several times a week we get telephone calls from residents who want to know what color their house was painted and when it was painted. Often, they are new residents and the previous owner did not leave paint cans in the garage that might give them that information. In most cases we are able to give them the color(s) and dates, but every once in a while there is no record of the house ever being repainted. We are pretty sure that in the 25-35 years since that first coat of paint, there has been at least one application of new paint, but no information was submitted to Administration.
If it is time for you to repaint the exterior of your house, please take the time to fill out a Paint Submittal which can be found on the website under Members > Member Services > For Your Home > Paint My House or Front Door. If you are not a computer user, you may pick up a paper copy of this form in the Welcome Center. Not only will you guarantee that the new chosen paint color is approved, but if you need reference to this information in the future, it will be readily available for you or the next owner.
Samples of approved paint colors are on display in the kitchen area of the Welcome Center and there are also two sample books that may be checked out for 24 hours.

Signs Your Shoes are Dead
Most people wait until their shoes look bad before replacing them. By that time they have been toast for many months. Following are signs that you should replace them.
• The sole tread pattern is worn down. Many shoes now are purposely made so a different color shows through when the sole is worn out.
• The heel is worn down more on one side than the other, sometimes to the point that the shoe is leaning to one side. There are wrinkles on the side or bottom of the sole from breakdown of the support and cushioning. The uppers are broken down around the ankle.
What's wrong with wearing worn out shoes? They no longer provide good support and cushioning. Lack of cushioning and support can lead to shin splints, heel spurs, plantar fasciitis, iliotibial band syndrome and stress fractures.
Shoe wear patterns can tell a shoe fit expert what kind of shoes you should buy by indicating where and how you wear down the soles and heels of your shoes. Bring your old shoes with you when you buy new shoes. They can be indicators that you overpronate, have a neutral gait, or supinate.
Special Note From the Aquatic and Fitness Center (AFC)
Orientation on how to use the gym equipment is held Thursdays, 1 pm. Stop in and sign-up. Classes are limited. Contact Lonnie Davis, AFC Coordinator, to discuss questions or concerns regarding the AFC. Hours of operation for the AFC and Desert Oasis are on page 2.

Association Committees
Active Health
Chair Rita Menet 920-659-1428 rita.menet@gmail.com
Next meeting Nov. 7, 3 pm, WC1
This month the Active Health Committee would like to spotlight our community Brain Health Action Group (BHAG). Alzheimer's is estimated by the National Institute of Health to be the seventh leading cause of death of Americans. A recent clinical trial led by researcher Dr. Dale Bredesen suggests Alzheimer's can be reversed by identifying and correcting personal biological deficiencies, toxin exposures, and pathogens, and by making critical diet and lifestyle changes. Much larger trials are planned, but why wait years for results if you feel your memory is not as good as it used to be, or if Alzheimer's runs in your family? The Brain Health Action Group is a SCOV support group for those making the changes outlined in Dr. Bredesen's book, The End of Alzheimer's Program. The BHAG welcomes anyone interested or curious about improving their cognitive health. Join us the second and fourth Tuesdays of the month, 4-5:30 pm, Desert Oasis/Ocotillo. For more information go to www.apollohealthco.com/alzheimers-reversal/.

Architectural Inspection Group
Conveyance Coordinator, Jack Mooney, 520-917-8087, scoroval@ciramail.com
Ever wonder what violations are found when a home is being inspected during a listing/escrow inspection? While there are many items Architectural Inspection Group inspectors must look at during the inspection, here are some of the more common violations that they find:
• Items added without SCOV approval such as patio covers, gutters, fountains, firepits or fences.
• Metal fencing or gates that need repainting.
• House needs painting.
• Damage to stucco, trim or moldings.
• Driveway coating in need of repair.
• Paver or concrete work is uneven, cracked, or poses a tripping hazard.
• Plants overhanging property lines, overgrown bushes near driveways, hedges over six feet tall and plant debris.
• And the most common, bare soil areas without plants or ground cover.
Now would be a good time to review these items. If you have any questions about these or other violations, contact the conveyance coordinator at 520-917-8087 for more information.
Architectural Review
Jim Cherry 612-805-5637 ARC@suncityorovalley.com
Zoom meetings Second and Fourth Tue., 2 pm
Monsoon season is upon us. As desert dwellers, we spend a lot of time thinking about water. A great many gutters and downspouts have been added or replaced on homes over the past year. Here is a quick fact: for every 1,000 square feet of roof, a one-inch rain storm will generate 600 gallons of water.
Please take a few minutes and inspect your property. Water flows in your yard should be directed to your side yards and then flow forward towards the street. A street-facing side yard can have water flowing that direction as well. It must not be flowing into your neighbor’s yard, the golf course, or into any of our common areas. If you are unsure of what to do, then call the office. We’ll find someone to come out and take a look.
Code of Conduct Review Board
Chair Marlene Branz, 618-670-1063 cconduct@suncityorovalley.com
The SCOV Code of Conduct (COC) defines civil behavior for residents and their guests. The COC is spelled out on page 5 of the Owners and Resident Handbook. The board is made up of five resident volunteers. If you wish to file a complaint, look for the form in the member section of the website under member services.
The intent of the COC is to maintain mutual respect, honesty, and courtesy amongst fellow residents and anyone who frequents SCOV public spaces. Let's all do our best to make SCOV a civil place to live.
Community Directory
Chair Blythe Campbell 907-717-7546 scov.community.directory@gmail.com www.scovaz.com/members/services/directory
If you buy a house in SCOV, you are unlisted in the online and print directories by default. The information we get about house sales only includes sellers’ and buyers’ names. That’s not enough information to create directory listings. Check your new owner emails from SCOV for information about how to list your information in the directories. You can choose which information you want to list in either the secure online directory (requires login on the SCOV website) or the paper directory. The link to update your listing is on the SCOV Member Services pages.
When you buy a second house in SCOV, we can’t transfer your listing information because we don’t know which house you intend to live in. Your new house is unlisted by default as above, and the listing you have for the old address stays in the directory until you update the listing for that house or sell it.
Consumer Referral - Vendor List
Susanna Moran scovconsumerservices@gmail.com
The Vendor List is on the SCOV website. After logging in, go to Members > Member Services > Consumer Referral Vendor List.
The Vendor List is currently available for viewing at the monitor’s desk at Catalina Vista. Check the Vendor List often, as changes are made frequently.
Vendors should email Susanna Moran to inquire about applying to be on the Vendor List.

“A library outranks any other one thing a community can do to benefit its people. It is a never failing spring in the desert.” – Andrew Carnegie
Welcome to the many new families who have recently moved to SCOV. You will find our Library full of good books and movies to check out. Stop in with your Association card to get entered into the Library system. We hope you'll consider joining The Friends of the Library (FOL) at that time.
Memberships and donations go towards purchasing books and movies. Your HOA fees do not go toward keeping our Library full of these wonderful items, so your financial support is greatly appreciated. FOL also supplies the Library with the monthly publication BookPage, given out to you for free. First come, first served.
As always, please join us every month for Book Bingo. See Coming Events on page 11 for more details.

L-r: Pat Norton, Bill Norton, Karen Curry
August featured artists are Pat Norton, Bill Norton and Karen Curry. Pat uses her knitting loom to supply baby cocoons, hats, booty sets and ruffle scarves. She enjoys meeting people and selling at the Gift Shop. For every cocoon set she sells, she donates another to the Seniors for Kids.
Bill received his degree in industrial arts and was a shop teacher at junior high through junior college levels. He enjoys wood turning and free form carving, working the equipment until his mind, heart and hands are happy with what he sees. His goal is to never have two projects look the same.
Karen’s creativity began when her grandmother and mother taught her sewing, crocheting, embroidery, quilting and more. In 2015, she added woodworking at SCOV. She uses hard woods and exotic lumber, making toys, wine holders, scroll work, jewelry boxes. The list grows as she learns new techniques.
If you are missing the monthly Monday Madness Sales, visit the Gift Shop for our ongoing Summer Madness Sale with huge bargains on glass, jewelry, wood, pottery, cards, fabrics and much more. A great way to shop and support your local artists.

It’s Been a Hot Summer
It’s been really hot, but the rains eventually came, along with wind. We thank those in our community who keep an eye out for their neighbors and report any damage to Administration. With so many of our neighbors away at this time of the year, we need to be especially aware of our surroundings.
8 August 2023, Sun City Oro Valley Tipster
During our monsoon season, pesky weeds seem to appear overnight. Remove them as soon as possible and try to make every effort to stay ahead of the weeds in your yard for the next few weeks.
Is there standing water in your yard? It’s important to drain ponds and/or fountains in yards to eliminate standing water where mosquitoes can breed. Other items such as buckets, empty flowerpots and other containers can also collect rain, so be sure they are not holding standing water.
Remember to prune or trim shrubs or bushes that obstruct the sight lines of a person exiting a driveway. They need to be pruned to a height of 42 inches or less to allow a safe exit.
Thank you for continuing to take pride in your property and our community even in our extremely hot summer months. We appreciate your help in keeping SCOV beautiful.

Our fiscal year began in July, so now is the time to renew or purchase a membership. We look forward to you joining us for the 2023-2024 season. If this is your first time purchasing an annual membership, visit the Pro Shop or call for more information. To renew an annual membership, you can contact the Pro Shop to charge it to your credit card on file or go online to purchase at www.theviewsgolfclub.com.
Golf clinics continue every Wednesday from 8-9 am, $20/ session. Sign up in the Pro Shop to reserve your spot.
As a reminder, hydration is extremely important during the summer heat. Let’s be prepared for thunderstorms, possible flash floods and lightning. It’s official monsoon season in Southern Arizona, so we must be careful.
Follow these suggestions to keep yourself safe while heading out on the course during monsoon season. Check the forecast and check it often. Download a reliable radar app and seek shelter immediately if you cannot get off the golf course quickly. Don’t worry if you can’t finish your round; we will give you a rain check to complete your round at another time. The important thing is to be safe and use your best judgment when the weather is questionable. Get in touch with the Pro Shop for further information by calling 520-825-3110.
Director of Golf Maintenance - Michael
Kropf scvgolf@suncityorovalley.com

During the months of June and July a lot of effort was put into the golf course to promote growth of Bermuda grass in fairways, tees and greens. The maintenance staff aerified, topdressed and verticut all these areas. The benefits will be realized during August and September. The monsoons bring higher humidity and occasional rain that really encourages rapid Bermuda grass growth. The irrigation water is also reduced, which will improve the playing conditions. All of the frustrations from the course being thin with some wet areas in June will be reduced, and the golf course will be in much better condition for the rest of the summer.
One disadvantage of the increased humidity and rain during the monsoons is that the Bermuda grass in the roughs, fairways and greens will begin to grow faster than it can be mowed. This results in an increase of grass clippings that leave piles everywhere. Also, the grass starts scalping which causes the turf to turn a yellow color because it is getting mowed too low on the plant. To slow this surge of growth a plant growth regulator will be sprayed, as well as increased amounts of verticutting and raising mowing heights on all the mowers. This will help reduce the grass clipping piles and prevent the grass from being scalped and going off-color.
Verticutting the fairways also helps thin the canopy for overseeding. This speeds up the prepping process so seed can be spread sooner, leading to quicker germination.

The comments received in the club survey were positive and constructive. The consensus was that we play for a social as well as competitive experience. Members cited the club as an excellent format to meet new people, play different formats, and play with golfers not in their usual groups. Preferences for games were evenly split between 4-man scrambles, 4-man team events and individual play. We will schedule these events equally in the upcoming season. Thanks to all who participated in the survey.

Play Thu. morning
The summer schedule is winding down but there are two more regular league days, Thursdays, August 3 and September 7, and five more skins games before the course closes for overseeding on September 18. The fun part about the skins games is that, as a participant, you are only playing against yourself. If you have a bad hole, it does not impact your team.
Congratulations to the following skins winners on June 29 Byron Hays, Ken Schroeder, Bob Newman, Drake Robles, Ed Hurlbut, Bob Schoepflin and Warren Conttrell. Well done, guys.
The course closes for overseeding from September 18 to October 9. The league will then pick up the new season calendar for 2023-2024. Come on and join the league, and remember, “Half the time, twice the fun."

Sometimes eye doctors recommend eye exercises. At SCOV, you may be able to get the benefit without the expense. Just show up at Catalina Vista when the Table Tennis Club is going strong to watch a ping pong ball fly back and forth over the net.
Your Foundation received a request from and approved a grant for the Table Tennis Club to replace one of four tables damaged by the wear and tear of frequent set up and take down. This new table will not only make the balls fly livelier, but also will serve as a prototype for other tables in need of replacement.

If you have a knit or crochet project, or would like to learn, come join us. An ongoing group project is making crocheted mats out of plastic shopping bags. You can participate in this project by cutting the bags into strips, stringing the strips into plastic yarn (plarn) and/or crocheting them into mats.
If you wish to donate bags, flatten clean Fry’s, Safeway or Walmart bags and stack them by color. You can then fold all the stacks over into one; no need to fasten them together. This effort on your part greatly streamlines the cutting and crochet process. Do not include newspaper bags as they do not work for this project. Bags can be dropped into a basket on Jane Fairchild’s front porch any time at 1750 E. Crown Ridge Way. ode

Sand pictured in this display was collected from D-Day beaches where Americans landed June 6, 1944. The sand was collected by the named members of the Modeler’s Club and donated to the Veteran’s Club. We not only build replicas of planes, trains, automobiles, ships and more, we discuss and reveal the history behind these items and the events that highlight them. We have a monthly “How goes it” mixer in the Modeler’s Room on the fourth Friday of the month, 8:30 am. It’s very informal and building models is not a requirement. See above for our regular business meeting. We would love to welcome you, so join us to enjoy some coffee, donuts and share history. You may find something to explore, build and share with us.
Who would have thought to make pendants from a gourd? Our gourd artists have been busy doing just that. These beautiful pendants start out as a rectangle cut from a gourd. Then various techniques are applied depending on the design the artist has chosen. Dye or paint are used as the coloring agents. Visit our gourd artists in the Artisan Center. We are always happy to show you around. Even better, consider joining our club. We have everything you need to get started.

Japanese flower arranging, ikebana, is the art of arranging flowers, branch materials, grasses and leaves. At its core is the beauty resulting from a combination of color, shapes and graceful lines. More than simple floral decoration, it is a form of sculpture with plant materials. Learn from certified instructors at your own pace and make creative arrangements for your home.

It is quieter now in the Sewing Room as some clubs take a break and return in the fall. It might be time to consider getting trained to be a monitor. Contact Chris Ludwig.
It is also a good time to be reminded that everyone using the room during this time:
• Must be an HOA resident or have renter status and be current on dues: $5/year.
• Must have a monitor present when using the room. You can check ahead at www.signup.com.
• Must have had room orientation and training on the machine you wish to use. If either is needed, please call Leslie Monroe 509-947-5669 for Pfaff machines or see Sue Lane for serger machine training.
The requirements are in place to keep everyone safe and protect our SCOV club status. Enjoy the season and have a wonderful summer.

Sculpture
Dale Foster 520-825-0707 fosterdale1248@gmail.com Mon., 9 am-5 pm, Catalina Vista/Art Studio
The Sculpture Club meets Mondays, Catalina Vista/Art Studio. If you are interested in becoming a member or learning more about our club, stop in or contact Dale Foster. Our sculpture pieces are in the glass case and Art Studio window inside Catalina Vista, the display case outside of the Library and locations inside the Library.
This hanging totem was recently completed by Christine Takerian. Christine joined the Sculpture Club after moving to SCOV several years ago, but decided to go back to work. Recently, Christine retired and rejoined our club. This is the first project that she completed since her return and she started it several years ago. Last month’s article was about using embellishments to enhance a sculpture. Christine did this by using beads from jewelry that she purchased from a thrift store. She also used braided picture hanging wire to string together the sculpture.

If you have been wanting to check out what goes on in the Sewing Room, or have never been to our corner spot in the Artisan Center, now would be a great time to take a tour. Any one of us would able to show you the new sewing machines and perhaps you can see a demonstration of the quilting and embroidery machines. We would love to show you our closet, filled with donations to the many organizations we support. It's pretty impressive what happens in our little corner room. Come by Monday or Thursday, 9 am-noon, and take a look.

Tue., 9-11 am, Artisan Center/Sewing www.scovhookers.weebly.com
The Tapestry Hooking and Fiber Arts group meets on Tuesday mornings in the Sewing Room. If you are interested in our group, stop by the Sewing Room between 9-11 am. The group provides materials and instruction for those interested in learning hooking. People involved in other arts using fiber are invited and encouraged to join our group.
Shown at left is the beginning stages of Coni Arseneau's dining table runner. She plans to use the 48 inch by 16¾ inch runner as a hot pad by putting thermal pad material between the rug and backing. As you can see in the picture, she sketched out the design using the picture on the right as the inspiration. She is transferring the design from paper to rug warp by hand, using a fine tipped marker and lots of patience.

Silversmith and Lapidary
Pres. Rich Rozehnal 520-638-6368 rozehnal@comcast.net
Summer shop hours: Mon.-Fri., 9 am-noon, Artisan Center/Lapidary Room
Our featured artist of the month is Coko Brown. She is a visual artist and musician originally from San Diego, CA. Working in a variety of mediums it is not uncommon to see more than one medium in a piece of her art. Recently, the Silversmith and Lapidary Club caught her attention and she joined the club last April. Inspired by nature, many pieces that Coko creates have elements of mountains, oceans or deserts in them. While getting her feet wet with this new medium, Coko is creating wearable pieces. However, her intention is to create larger works that can be hung on the walls or freestanding multimedia works of art. Coko is a member of the Woodworkers, Clay and Stained/Fused Glass clubs. She is also a painter who works in several mediums.

SCOV residents interested in joining our club should visit the shop and speak with the monitor about training. New member training is held monthly on the second Tuesday and Wednesday.

It’s a matter of fact. Those of us who work with glass experience a moment of nervousness from time to time. This was certainly the case for Julie Cherry. The work on her original glass clock was finally completed, and it was time to drill a hole through multiple layers of glass so that she could insert the hands. We who work with glass realize how quickly glass can break. Congratulations, Julie, on your success in completing this. With her love of the lines and clarity of glass, Julie attended a class at the Tucson Sonoran Glass School. She was inspired, and decided to join our glass club over two years ago. Currently, Julie is revising our mold photo album, making it more user-friendly. Thanks, Julie. Apart from glass creating, Julie is a member of our Hiking Club, where she is a guide. She recently became a member of the SCVC Foundation.
We are a highly organized club filled with very giving and helpful members. Please visit us soon.

Second Sun., 2:30-4 pm, Desert Oasis/Ocotillo
The SCOV Not So Silent Book Club is growing, and we hope you will join in the fun. No books are assigned. Once a month we each talk about a book we've been reading. It can be a military history, a tender love story, the latest best seller, a slim volume of a favorite poet, whatever. We go around the room: did you love the book, the plot, the characters, a lyrical passage? If a movie was made, was it better or worse than the book? You may hear of a book you really would like to read. Sometimes we give away or loan books. Come celebrate your love of reading with us on the second Sunday of the month, 2:30-4 pm, Desert Oasis/Ocotillo.

Our summer meetings are a great opportunity for us to gather together and help each other with our research. In addition, monitors are frequently available in the lab to guide you and answer questions. Our topic for the Tuesday, August 1, meeting is “Help, I’m Stuck!” Share your struggles with a brick wall and maybe someone will have an idea that will break it down. Whether you’re a total novice or have been researching for years, come to get or give advice to each other while connecting with other members. If you aren’t already a member you are welcome to come to check us out.

Persian poet Majid Naficy penned this beautiful, hopeful poem honoring Iranian women protesting their lack of freedom.
“The Day Chador Is Not Forced
The day will come when my sisters / No longer wear forced chadors. Let that day be in summer / So that we can go for a picnic.
We will wrap the first chador as a bundle / And carry our goods in it. We will spread the second as a carpet / And sit down on it. We will use the third as a dining cloth / And eat our meals around it.
Then I will climb a mulberry tree / And my four unveiled sisters / Will each take a corner of the fourth chador / So that I can shake mulberries down on it.
How delicious it will be to eat mulberries / When my sisters no longer veil. On that day, chadors return to chests / And when posterity asks about this rite It finds only mothballed fabrics.”
Newcomers are always welcome to express their personal feelings in poetic form.

Caring for dogs in Arizona summer can be tricky. They need their exercise and can be affected by heat. The sidewalks and streets are hot to the touch. Most people know to check the sidewalk heat and make sure it is safe for those paws.
People tend to use the dog park early morning or early evening when it’s bearable. The dogs may play a bit, but energy is usually not as brisk. Water at the park helps. We have hoses to refresh the dishes, but also remind the dogs’ people to bring water for themselves.
Mavros and Bella saying something to each other
Our dog park provides a spot for our pups to enjoy having a change of scenery, scents and socializing. When it’s cooler and shadier, they do play together.
Remember to pick up after your pup and leave the park clean and safe for others.

Summer rains are upon us; the word monsoon refers to a system of winds that changes seasonally, bringing wet and dry periods to a region. In the Sonoran Desert, the summer monsoon consists of winds from the sea flowing inland to fill the partial vacuum created by rising continental air warmed by the summer sun. These winds bring moisture. The belt of westerlies shifts north in the summertime, allowing moist air from Baja California to move into the region and bring monsoon rain. Enjoy this time of renewal and hope in the desert.

Pilates
Mary Ayers 520-638-7916 scov.pilates@gmail.com
Mon., 3 pm, Thu., 1:30 pm, AFC/Studio
Are you a golfer? Twisting on drives, squatting and leaning over to pick up balls? Golf movements are required and repeated. The results can be overused weak muscles and imbalances affecting legs, hips, arms, shoulders and back. Over 60? Your game is probably affected with shorter, less accurate drives. Stamina decreases and muscle strains, pulls and tears can occur. For years, elite golfers (Tiger Woods, etc.) have turned to Pilates, an essential training tool to stay balanced and improve performance. Like golf shots, Pilates is based on movement from the body’s center or core (trunk, shoulders, abdomen, pelvis). As you strengthen your core, hip rotation improves your range of motion and back stability. Other results include powerful, more accurate golf shots and a symmetrically muscled, flexible, strong body. Pilates is a full body exercise with very little joint strain. Call Mary or just come by and watch a class.

Cycling renews us. Getting outside in the clean air, taking in the incredible mountain views and biking with friends are some of the reasons we choose to live here. Oro Valley is one of the greatest biking destinations in the country. Wide streets, gorgeous bike paths, clean air and desert beauty draw cyclists from all over the country.
Cycling here is a dream come true for members of the Sun City Vistoso Cycling Club (VCC). With over 250 members and organized group rides four days per week, there’s a ride for everyone.
We support three local charitable organizations: Wheels for Kids, El Grupo and the Interfaith Community Food Bank. VCC volunteers build or repair and deliver over 400 bikes to kids in the Tucson area every year through the Wheels for Kids (WFK) program. WFK’s 40 volunteers have delivered over 4,600 bikes to charities such as Boys and Girls Club, Casa de los Niños and More Than a Bed. New volunteers are welcome.

Birders Group
Peggy Smith 520-344-0991 pdsaz@aol.com
www.scovbirding.wix.com/birdersgroup
Little birds that reside in SCOV yearround, verdins like nectar and small insects and will often visit hummingbird feeders. Other than southern Nevada, these desert birds are only found in states bordering Mexico. Look closely and you will see a red patch on its shoulder. The red is more noticeable on the male and its sweet song is easily recognizable. Verdins build surprisingly large nests with openings at the bottom. Want to learn more?
We are a 110-plus member, activity-oriented group, and all SCOV residents are invited to join us on our field trips to learn more about the birds here in Arizona (we carpool). If you are interested in joining us, be sure to ask Peggy (above) to be added to our mailing list so we can keep you up-to-date on the trips, which tend to be ad hoc as the monsoons approach and we rest during our summer hiatus.

It is fast, fun, and a great workout that tones muscles and improves coordination. Players use the walls to create angles on shots but cannot use the ceiling or back wall of the opposing team.
We welcome new members, both men and women. Come see if the game is for you.

Whether you are a seasoned athlete or looking for a way to become more active, this game may be for you. Come by and watch, but bring your suit because you may feel like you want to join in the fun. We welcome new folks who are just checking to see if this game might interest them.

"We had such a positive experience working with Brenda. Our house was under contract before hitting MLS, thanks to Brenda's networking. The photos and marketing materials were excellent. In the end, getting the house sold is the most important thing, but selling a house is a stressful process, and Brenda made everything so much easier. Her communication is excellent - she is extremely responsive, but she is also funny, supportive, and encouraging. I recommend Brenda without hesitation."
