ovelist and Kentish girl, Victoria Hislop is taking part in the Moonlight Walk – a charity walk around Tunbridge Wells on behalf of Hospice in the Weald on the night of 17th June. We spoke to Victoria about her writing and the forthcoming charity event.

STAYGO: You grew up in Tonbridge and now you live in Sissinghurst. What’s your favourite thing about living in Kent?

ag m goon ay us st ow @ foll

VICTORIA: It is surely the most beautiful county in the country! Green, green, green. And I think this is the most beautiful spring/ summer for decades – with the blossom and the wild flowers – and the bluebells were amazing this year!

SG: You worked in publishing and journalism before becoming a novelist. What inspired you to start writing? VICTORIA: I have always enjoyed expressing myself on the page – and I think that might be genetic. My grandfather, uncles and father were all journalists. I can't draw or paint – so thank goodness I have words! SG: Your first book, The Island, was well received and selected for the Richard & Judy Book Club. How did it feel to have success with your very first novel? VICTORIA: It was a wonderful experience – but also a big surprise too.

SG: The plot was based on a true story of an island near Crete called Spinalonga, which used to be a leper colony. How did you come across the subject matter?

the guidebook for something to do – and there it was. It fascinated me from the moment we got off the little boat and stepped onto the island. I formed the idea for the story there and then – and began writing it the next day. It was finally ready three years later!

SG: After experiencing a lot of success with The Island, was it harder to write your second novel, The Return?

VICTORIA: Everyone says how difficult it will be to follow a successful first novel – but I had said to myself that I wouldn't write another unless I had an idea that I thought was worth writing about. I discovered some secret stories of the Spanish Civil War – and a passion for flamenco. So, those elements were the starting point!

SG: Do you have any other writing projects in the pipeline? VICTORIA: My third novel, The Thread, is well underway and due to be published in October 2011! It's set in the Greek city of Thessaloniki – it’s a love story, with themes of war and exile.

SG: You’re leading the Moonlight Walk in aid of Hospice in the Weald. How did you come to be involved? VICTORIA: My husband Ian's mother died in a hospice about a decade ago, so we have always

VICTORIA: The Pantiles – I have been going there since I was a child and I'll never forget my first taste of the water there.

THE MOONLIGHT WALK There’s still time to register for the Moonlight Walk and help raise much needed funds for Hospice in the Weald (a local charity rooted in our community). It takes place on Friday 17th June. There’s a free T-shirts for all walkers and it’s £15 to enter. Contact Ruth Fahie on 01892 820508 or ruth.fahie@ hospiceintheweald.org.uk been appreciative of the hospice movement. Hospices are amazing places. Whole families are looked after, as well as their dying relative.

SG: What will the walkers experience at the event? VICTORIA: It’s an 8-mile walk around the perimeters of the town centre, taking in Major Yorks Road, Mount Ephraim, Camden Road, Bayhall Road and Forest Road. I am looking forward to it – walking at night will be different! And I think the camaraderie will wonderful.

Which of these is NOT a Greek island?

SG: Are you a keen walker? VICTORIA: Yes, I love walking. I do most of it in London though, rather than in Kent! I try to avoid using the Underground, and it's always amazing how fast you can get from A to B on foot. Charing Cross to Sloane Square for example only takes about 15 minutes – and it's the same on the Underground! You have to have comfy shoes though – not your kitten heels.

SG: You’re also a mum of two. Do they have writing and journalistic ambitions or have they taken a different path from their parents? VICTORIA: They are both really good writers – but I am not sure what they will do when they leave university. One of them is studying English and the other hopes to do History. SG: Finally, if you could have written one classic piece of literature, what would it have been? VICTORIA: It has to be Wuthering Heights by Emily Brontë! SG: Our sentiments exactly! Thanks Victoria – and good luck with the Moonlight Walk!

AN AMBITIOUS PROJECT

The Tunbridge Wells Project is a very interesting and relevant set up, founded by the onetime-mystery blogger, Anke, and photographer David Bartholemew. The project aims to create the ultimate photographic archive of Tunbridge Wells by photographing buildings both inside and outside to create a showcase of historic architecture and public spaces. The project’s website contains some perfect images that capture the town’s history and the rich vision that certain architects had for our town, most famously Decimus Burton. I have always been inspired by the art-deco of the Assembly Hall and Town Hall, facing up to people who see the complex as a giant and disgraceful monolith, and I am glad to see that the creators of this site share my views in this. We have some amazing buildings in Tunbridge Wells, and I hear through the grapevine that this team want to get access to photograph the old cinema. That would be a very fitting tribute to a once magical artdeco building. Follow them at www.thetunbridgewellsproject.co.uk or follow the blog www.anke.blogs.com

MOVIE RELEASES Released on June 3rd, X-Men: First Class goes back to the beginnings of the X-Men universe. Based on the long running comic book series and starring James McAvoy and Michael Fassbender, this could be a surprise package, but X-Men has only really appealed to fans and may prove to be a superhero movie too far in this genre. Yet another comic hero is brought to vivid life when The Green Lantern comes out on 17th June, starring Ryan Reynolds. Next year we will have Marvel’s The Avengers, with all of them in! Again, this may not have appeal any further than comic book fans, but hey, there’s a lot of them out there… Bridesmaids is a comedy that is generating huge buzz stateside. It has no major stars but it could be the sleeper hit of the summer, a tonic to the comic book onslaught, and is released on June 24th.

the social network BY... HOPE BROWN

S

ince 1995, social networking has fast become the most popular means of communication among the younger (and sometimes not-soyounger) generation. Not only does this ever growing cyber world connect families and friends but it is also a way in which businesses can grow and become widely recognised.

COMMUNICATION REVOLUTION With the overwhelming amount of sites including Twitter, Facebook, Bebo and Myspace, it can sometimes be confusing to decide which one is best, which one our families and friends have, which have the latest updates on events, or maybe which one could best promote a business? With so many options to choose from are we becoming more reliant on social networking as a main means of communication? Staying In and Going Out spoke to two local people who use social networking sites both for friendship and to promote their business. Here's what they had to say.

trainers. Previously a personal assistant, she started her own business, Virtually Anywhere, after the birth of her son. The business is an innovative idea which supports people in completing tasks they so desperately would like to get done but may not have the time to do. Jade says that she believes that Twitter is a fantastic tool with many benefits, such as: being able to find and follow key influencers and potential clients by using sites such as www. wefollow.com. Search for specific groups such as "Coaching" or "Virtual Assistants" communicate with your followers with general conversation, so you get to know each other find useful information via blogs and links, and you can retweet them for your followers

link people from Twitter to pages on your website, such as you sign up box for your newsletter, therefore giving your website exposure As anyone knows networking is key to any business success, you may want to find new clients or services you can recommend to existing clients and Twitter really does play an important part of this. If you attend a networking group ask the following questions: Is the networking group on Twitter, if so follow them as you may get useful updates such as meeting dates Is there a "hash tag" for the group – this is common area for that group or subject, where everyone can see who is talking about it Ask fellow members for their Twitter name, follow each other and start talking! As you can see, the main factors are getting to know your clients, showcasing your expertise and giving value, and all of these will get your business name out there and gain new clients.

Paul, the owner of a photography studio, uses social networking to promote his business, and why wouldn't you when, as he says, "you've got access to everything you want". Paul, previously a builder, was inspired to venture into this new career after attempting to find a studio to shoot a picture of his saxophone. Finding nowhere to do this, he saw the opportunity to open his own studio, which he now hires out to individuals and professionals, renting out the space, infinity cave, lights, make-up and changing room areas, all for just £25/hour. Using sites such as Facebook and Twitter, he found that they are excellent business tools enabling him to reach prospective clients. He also found that it was a brilliant opportunity to meet fun, interesting people. tone those

tummies!

B

ooked your summer holiday? Want to tone up those tummies before jetting off to the hotter climates? Personal trainer Karen Bidios explains three exercises that will get you well on your way to a flatter, more toned tummy. Start out with one circuit of all three exercises and build up to three. Leave a one minute recovery between sets.

cHinese cruncH:

Lying flat, stretched out on the floor, place both hands together, raise arms forward, lifting the shoulders towards a single raised leg. Alternate each leg. Keep the exercise slow and controlled, holding tummy tight. Breath out on the way up. Repeat for 15 times. chinese crunch

reverse curl

reVerse curl: Lie flat on your back, with your hands at your sides, palms facing up. Lift legs to a 90 degree angle. This is your start and finish position. Do not allow the feet to drop or take the legs out further, as this may put strain on the lower back. Pull the legs into your chest, slightly lifting your bottom off the ground and return to your start position. Breath out as you pull your legs in.

cruncH:

Lying flat on the floor, bring your feet as close to your bottom as possible to prevent the body moving, to isolate the tummy muscles. Place finger tips to your temples, hold tummy tight and slowly raise your torso up towards the ceiling. Keep an equal distance between chin and chest to prevent any pulling on the neck. Breath out on the way up. Repeat 15 times.

karen bidios... Karen qualified as a personal trainer in 1999, following 10 years of long distance road racing. Her love of fitness led to what seemed a natural progression – studying to become a fitness professional. Karen’s main passion is helping clients with weight loss, stress management and depression. Karen says, “Reduce the effects of stress by taking regular exercise including both cardiovascular and resistance work. Add whole grains to your diet to increase your natural intake of B vitamins. If in doubt take a high quality vitamin B complex. Reduce your intake of caffeine and stimulants such as coffee, tea and alcohol. These encourage your body to release cortisol which leads to weight gain around the middle. Contact Karen at www.vibes-training.co.uk

with Victoria Conway wHat is osteoPatHy?

wHat to eXPect

Osteopathy is a primary health care system combining clinical diagnosis and manual treatment. It is particularly concerned with how different structures such as bones, muscles, ligaments, tendons, discs and nerves relate to each other.

The first treatment will usually last about 45 minutes and subsequent treatments tend to last around half an hour. The osteopath will take your case history asking questions about various aspects of your symptoms, general health and lifestyle such as work routines, diet and exercise to help them build a full picture and come to the right diagnosis. The examination will normally require the removal of outer clothing and the osteopath will look at you standing and moving so that they can assess your posture and body movements. If necessary they will carry out medical examination procedures such as testing reflexes or taking blood pressure and they may refer you for x-rays if appropriate. Osteopaths use their hands to assess areas of weakness, tenderness, restriction or strain. Treatment involves releasing and relaxing muscles and stiff joints by using a variety of techniques including gentle massage, stretches and rhythmic movements and manipulations. The aim is to enhance blood and nerve supply to your tissues to help your body’s own healing mechanisms. Taking a thorough case history and assessing your posture

When we experience physical or emotional stresses our body tissues tend to tighten up. Tension which remains held in the body restricts its movement and painful symptoms may develop. Osteopathic patients range from the very young to the elderly, including manual workers, office professionals, pregnant women and sports people. They seek treatment for a wide variety of conditions including back and neck pain, repetitive strain injury, postural changes due to pregnancy, postural problems caused by driving or work strain, the pain of arthritis and sports injuries.

gives the osteopath a guide as to how much pain you are in. Treatment is then adapted to your particular problem and therefore should not cause pain. However, sometimes after soft tissue massage and manipulation patients can experience some soreness for one to two days. This is part of the body’s normal healing process. They may also advise on exercises that you can do to improve your posture and movement in your workplace and everyday life and to help in your recovery and to promote good health and prevent symptoms recurring.

wHere to go Most patients ‘self-refer’ to an osteopath for treatment, but it is possible to be referred by your GP. By law, osteopaths must register with the General Osteopathic Council (www. osteopathy.org.uk). It is an offence for anyone to call themselves an osteopath if they are not registered. To qualify, an osteopath must study for four to five years for a degree which includes more than 1,000 hours of training in osteopathic techniques. You can use the Statutory Register of Osteopaths on the General Osteopathic Council. The osteopath should make you feel at ease during your consultation and explain everything that is happening. Do ask questions at any time if you are unsure or have any concerns.
