and the lower pantiles Having been in negotiations for over a year, the Marquess of Abergavenny completed on buying the Lower Pantiles early last month. An undisclosed sum was paid, although the original estate agent’s guide price was £4.5 million. The location of The Pantiles is near the Marquess’ and the Nevill family home of Eridge Park and the area was indeed owned by the Nevill family until 1939. The purchased area

SAFE HANDS As president of The Royal Tunbridge Wells Civic Society, a former district councillor and patron of Spa Valley Railway, the Marquess of Abergavenny clearly has local interests at heart and can be expected to be a safe pair of hands for the site. He’s keen to work with the community, the owners of the Upper Pantiles and specifically the Association of Pantiles Traders, recognising the efforts they have made to bring new life to the area. “Historically my family has links with the Lower Pantiles. The area has huge potential but has to be handled sensitively; this is more a case of evolutionary than revolutionary change,” he says. “There are challenges, especially with regards to how we can fully utilise The Corn Exchange. Nothing has been ruled out and it is time we got this space working again.”
The only choice for this Mother's Day... 18th March What better location for your Mother's Day lunch, with a backdrop of one of the best views in south east England and a genuinely friendly and helpful staff, then you have the formula for the fine reputation enjoyed by The Beacon near Tunbridge Wells.

The Pantiles is a seven-day-a-week, year-round shopping destination – but these specialist events underline what we do really well,” says Richard Simm, chair of The Association of Pantiles Traders. Aside from these events, The Association of Pantiles Traders will continue to manage its markets held on the first and third weekend of every month. The Pantiles promises to be a vibrant spectacle this summer, not to be missed – once again the place to see and be seen. trinity plays host to ...
The Christians saturday 10th march! In 2012, The Christians are celebrating 25 years in the music business and they have an exciting year ahead of them. We caught up with them ahead of their gig at Trinity Theatre... ANNIVERSARY RELEASES As frontman and lead vocalist, Garry Christian is the most recognised band member, known for his soulful voice and distinctive look. But the current line-up of Joey Ankrah, Neil Griffiths, Lionel Duke, Mike Trigg and Cliff Watson are, in Garry's words, "a really tight band." He continues, "it's a real pleasure working with them... they are genuinely great to be around and Joey's musical talent is pretty inspiring." To celebrate their anniversary, The Christians are re-releasing the iconic albums The Christians and Colour in May this year. Garry tells us, "they'll be great collector's

pieces for the fans, as me, Henry Priestman and my brother Russell will hopefully be adding photos and handwritten mementos to the album sleeves to make them more personalised, as well as a few B-sides and extra surprises." After that, there's the release of a brand-new album in June, with all new material that Garry has been recording with producer Laurent Gueneau in Paris. In fact, the band are constantly busy, from playing at the 80s revival 'Rewind' in front of 18,000 people, to gigs in small theatres around the UK. Garry enthuses, "Luckily we're in demand and 2012 is busier than ever. Hopefully some of your readers will come and see us locally, and we've got great festival dates planned, including the Isle of Wight in June." Great stuff, Garry! the back story... THE ORIGINAL LINE-UP AND TODAY'S BAND As many will already know, The Christians were very successful in the late 80s and early 90s, having several big hits both in the UK and abroad, including Harvest For the World. Hailing from Liverpool, the band's name was taken from the surname of the three brothers who were in the original line-up (there are no religious connotations!), alongside guitarist Henry Priestman. Coincidentally, Priestman's middle name is also Christian, and so the name seemed to fit! Although the line-up is different today, and Garry Christian is the only original member of the band, The Christians are still successfully touring and making new music. So catch them soon at Trinity...

pring is in the air and there are some really great local events taking place in March, to encourage you to go out and about! TWELFTH NIGHT The Wateryard Theatre Group will be performing William Shakespeare's much loved play Twelfth Night from 15th to 17th of March at St Dunstan’s Church in Mayfield, with a matinée performance and an evening performance on the Saturday. The tale follows Viola, who is shipwrecked and believes her twin brother Sebastian to be dead. So, she pretends to be a boy (as you Twelfth Night

do!), called Corsino, and becomes a servant to Duke Orsino. The Duke is in love with Olivia, so he sends his servant to woo her, but Olivia falls for Corsino (Viola) instead. In the classic style of a Shakespeare comedy much confusion follows as a result of mistaken identity. Confused? Well, all will be clear if you book tickets, available now at www.ticketsource.co.uk/ wateryard There will also be a limited amount for sale by cash or cheque in person from Burnetts Estate Agent in Mayfield High Street. Contact them on 01435 874450. Tickets are priced at £12 or £8 for under-18s.
RTWAS The Royal Tunbridge Wells Art Society will hold its Spring Exhibition from 31st March to 15th April, at Sussex House, 61 The Pantiles. It is open 10am-5.30pm, Monday to Saturday and 10am- 4pm on Sunday, with free entry. This is the first of three open exhibitions each year which showcase the wide variety of work produced by the members. The society runs workshops and groups throughout the year in its charming premises at the end of the historic Pantiles, including life drawing, portraits from models, and weekly talks and demonstrations by artists using many media. In the summer there are outdoor painting excursions and further exhibitions by the portrait group and others. The emphasis in the society is on enjoyment and sharing, and new members are warmly welcomed, from experienced artists to beginners. For more info, please visit the website at www.rtwas.org

get ready for the stampede...
by sarah bond
it's all kicking off for spring! Like all right-minded females, top on-trend businesswoman Andrea Afrifa adores shoes, and when she moved from London to Tunbridge Wells she quickly realised there was a big gap in the high street market for fashionable ladies and children’s footwear from abroad. As luck would have it, her sister lives in fashion capital of the world Milan, and after visiting her first Italian trade show in 2005 Andrea was hooked. She came home with thousands of pounds worth of winning styles in need of a shop, and soon found perfect premises in St John’s. “I thought it was funny for a town like this not have a stronger independent offering,” she says. “So I just saw an opportunity and grabbed it.” She launched Stampede and two years’ later Stampede for mums next door, and hasn’t looked back. Now Stampede is listed as one of the top three children’s shoe shops in the country by Drapers magazine! It is not surprising, because Andrea knows all about tapping gaps in the market after her first massive success – launching the famous internet restaurant tunbridge wells edition
booking service Toptable.com with Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson, no less. “That’s where I learned all my business acumen,” she says. After they sold Toptable to an American company to become a global brand, Andrea moved south, had a baby and looked for a new
challenge. “I didn’t want to get sucked into full-time motherhood, so I wondered what I could do closer to home that would fit in?” she says. Her super-stylish shoe shops were the answer, and she has kept up the constant flow of the latest trainer trends for kids and top brand casual styles for yummy mummies that they can wear every day, as opposed to tottering about in their Jimmy Choos.
what's in stock? new spring and summer seasons! "Predominantly, we sell shoes you can’t get on the high street," says Andrea. "Lots of European and Italian cute designs, and it’s a really strong range this year. Stampede stocks "the ultimate kids’ collection from school to cool," and some of its 4,500 regular customers come from as far as London and Brighton. "We now have the new spring and summer season shoes coming in. We get lots of seasonal styles and limited editions. The big favourites at the moment are high-top trainers and brogues for the girls. There are lots of bright colours for kids, including yellow and green – which sounds scary but they are very sweet. The same goes for the ladies’ shoes, there’s a bit more colour in them. We need something to brighten us up!" Brands include Fly London, Camper, Hush Puppies, UGG, Converse, Start-rite, Lelli Kelly, and Crocs, with prices ranging from £35-£50 for kids and £45-£110 for women. And importantly, the seven members of staff are fully trained to fit shoes expertly, too!

Smoked Haddock, Spinach and Bacon Chowder YOU WILL NEED 250g undyed smoked haddock, skinned and pinned (which means remove the pin bones!) 1 onion, diced 2 rashers smoked bacon 250g spinach
REMEMBER!
500g potato, diced
You must use double cream, otherwise single cream will split and spoil the chowder.
1/2 litre chicken stock 1/2 litre double cream Seasoning NOW DO THIS... 1. Sweat off the onion and bacon in a large saucepan. 2. Add the diced potato, stock and double cream. Bring to the boil and simmer for 15 minutes. 3. Add the haddock, simmer for another 5 minutes, then add the spinach. Simmer until it wilts. 4. Season and serve with lots of fresh, crusty bread!
This delicious recipe was brought to you by Soup-urb, urban food café, where the emphasis is on seasonal food made with local ingredients. As the name suggests, the staff at Soup-urb love making soups – and this is one of their favourites. Enjoy! Soup-urb 11 Monson Road Tunbridge Wells, TN1 1LS 01892 514074 www.soup-urb.co.uk

On Sunday 18th March, it’s time to celebrate that special person in your life (now that Valentine’s is over!). Yes, we mean your mum! Port Lympne Wild Animal Park near Ashford has donated a unique prize to the Heart radio ‘Have a Heart’ Campaign, starting on 5th March 2012. Bidders taking part in the station’s on-air auction, broadcast on the Heart Kent Breakfast Show on Friday 9th March, could walk away with an exclusive stay for up to eight people at the park’s brand-new accommodation, Livingstone Cottage. The prize includes a VIP safari, plus an authentic African dinner prepared by a private chef! This ‘money can’t buy’ experience will allow the group to come face-to-face with and even feed some of the animals at the park! The Have a Heart campaign aims to improve the lives of disadvantaged children living in the communities served by the network. This year the appeal will run from Monday 5th to Friday 9th March and will be supporting the work of ChildLine.

purple flour experiences
creating cakes
Mother’s Day is looming, and if you are as awful at making cakes as I am, you will welcome the chance of enjoying some fun, one-to-one tuition on your doorstep – with coffee thrown in (and sometimes even champagne!) Claudia Newberry, who grew up surrounded by fabulous baking in her native Germany and Austria, launched her popular Purple Flour cake business and website after gaining a Masters in cake decoration. The icing on the cake is the fact she is now keen to pass on her artistry
through personalised Purple Flour Experiences workshops, for just four people at a time, in her beautiful Bidborough kitchen. FAMILY TRADITION Former London retail executive Claudia says: “My husband’s grandmother has always made cakes and she started teaching me, saying ‘you must learn how to make carnations and sweet peas’. I then signed up to do various courses and I thought this is exactly what I want to do now my children are at school. "To start with, friends would ask me to make cakes and it’s grown
Claudia Newberry hosts a group of friends at one of her Purple Flour Experiences. Beautiful cakes are celebrated with a glass of fizz!

At Purple Flour we will design and create the perfect cake for any occasion. We offer a friendly and professional service from an initial consultation through to delivery and assembly of your cake at your venue. And why not treat yourself to a Purple Flour Experience? We offer a variety of workshops in the Purple Flour Kitchen aiming at developing your skills and inspiring your baking and cake decorating. For more information vist www.purpleflour.co.uk or call Claudia on 01892 520219
‘The cupcakes we made during the Experience looked and tasted fantastic, my husband did not believe I had made such delicate and beautiful flowers.’

from there. After I set up my Purple Flour website I had hundreds of hits, so I could see there was a lot of interest. My portfolio keeps growing, so people can have a look and order bespoke cakes from there.

WORKSHOPS "Then last year I was asked by Kent College in Pembury to run an afterschool club and we made a penguin Christmas cake. I so enjoyed seeing the smiles on the girls' faces that I decided I wanted to teach, through small, intimate workshops. "It costs £40 for a two-hour mini workshop, which includes a cake or cupcakes, all the equipment, all the icings, plus teas, coffees, cakes and, in the evening, a glass of fizz." And Claudia’s own favourite?

“Carrot cake!” she beams without hesitation. Claudia has spaces on her Mother’s Day workshops and recommends The Roses Experience on 15th March. Contact her at claudianewberry@googlemail. com or on 01892 520219. www.purpleflour.co.uk

M
ichael Dunleavy opened his Eco salon in the High Street more than 20 years ago – and many of his unusually loyal staff have been there nearly as long, which is a big relief for all their clients! After all, who hasn't had the experience of just getting to know a stylist, when they suddenly up colouring sticks and leave? “I just came down to Kent one weekend with a girlfriend to visit her family, and drove down the High Street and loved the look of it,” says London-trained Michael. “And that was that.” Michael named Eco after the great Italian academic and author Umberto Eco – who wrote The Name of the Rose – but the name could just as easily describe the salon’s novel interior – with the metal mirrors and other decorative pieces forged from recycled material in London’s earthy Camden Town.
by Sarah Bond
COFFEE AND COIFFING Eco’s staying power is no doubt as much to do with the fun and friendly atmosphere and stylish metal-meets-terracotta surroundings as the fabulous cutting, styling and colouring. Everyone smiles and says “hello” as soon as you walk in. And after all the relaxing coffee and coiffing, it’s very hard to walk out again. But the big emphasis is on care, with only one appointment booked per hour per stylist to allow lots of time to get it just right. Actually listening to what the client really wants is a big part of their philosophy. “I wanted it to be unpretentious, quality hairdressing in a good atmosphere. Being welcoming is important,” says Michael. “Specialisation is for insects. We do everything here. Anyone can do anything you ask them when it comes to hair, and we get all ages.” Lionel Shell is one of the biggest characters behind the scissors. He’s celebrating his 55th year in
the business and still gets in a leather over his Harley Davidson when he gets home. And he never stops laughing. “I’ve no idea why I have stayed so long,” he chortles as he man-hugs great pal Michael. “I just haven’t been able to get out of the door!” Michael’s wife Sarah is also permanent, along with Lionel’s daughter Jane, Heidi Preece and several others. They do have celebrities among their clients, but part of their charm is their famed discretion. We all reveal far more to our hairdressers than anyone else, save perhaps the odd priest. On the fashion front, Michael says the big things at the moment are permanent blow drys that last three months (!), vibrant colouring (lots of reds), curls and very short, pixie-like bobs. They also have a lot of femmes going for the sophisticated look by having their hair put up, and they perform hairdressing wonders for weddings, too. And alongside all the expertise, Michael is keen to provide muchneeded opportunities for young people by training apprentices. So amid the old and new, there will be something for you! RUN A MILE If you feel energetic, it’s easy to register and join in the Sainsbury’s Sport Relief Mile. Go online and register your postcode to find an event near you. Tunbridge Wells is doing its bit with an event at the Nevill Cricket Ground, opening at 9.30am and closing at 1.00pm. You can choose from a 1 mile, 3 mile or 6 mile run. All you have to do is pay a small fee for entering and then the important bit – raise some sponsorship and run!
LET’S DANCE... And if you can’t manage a mile, then there are some great programmes on TV in support of the event, all encouraging you to donate. Whatever you do, don’t miss Let’s Dance for Sport Relief. Occupying primetime BBC1 on Saturday evenings from now until the grand final on March 17th, it’s worth staying in for! And in StayGo’s humble opinion, Robert Webb’s 2009 rendition of What a Feeling is one of the funniest things ever seen on TV! You can still catch it on YouTube, so put yourself in the mood and give a little cash.

Mother's day...
motherquotes
‘Mothering Sunday’ was originally the day when in 16th century Christian practice, people would make an annual visit to their mother church, which meant that most mothers would be reunited with their children on this day. Later, it was the one day a year when servants visited their families.
"It takes a woman twenty years to make a man of her son, and another woman twenty minutes to make a fool of him." Helen Rowland
M is for the million things she gave me,
"I want my children to have all the things I couldn't afford. Then I want to move in with them." Phyllis Diller
E is for her eyes, with love-light shining,
Mothering Sunday is sometimes know as Simnel Sunday, due to the practice of baking imnel cakes to celebrate the reuniting of families during the austerity of Lent.
"My mother loved children – she would have given anything if I had been one." Groucho Marx
