ichael Elliott is the Artistic Director for The Trinity Theatre and has just completed a gruelling run playing the title role in its production of King Lear. His next project will see him directing The Secret Garden for the upcoming Christmas presentation and Zac Thraves caught up with him in The Trinity Coffee Shop to discuss!

Michael has been part of the Trinity since its inception in 1978 when he was approached by the Civic Society to make a use from empty church buildings. What is now a unique symbol of the arts in Tunbridge Wells was once a dusty and decrepit building crying out for some care and attention. And it got its wish in spades! Originally Trinity did 16 productions as a local group when the theatre opened in the early 80s, though that had to be re-thought, exhausting as these things are. Michael then moved on to work at The National Theatre but has always come back over the years. Three years ago he took over the running of Trinity and though he has enjoyed being at the centre of the success story for the theatre, he admits to

preferring the directing and acting, something that has been in his heart since he was twelve years old. After recently playing King Lear, something of a personal reward for himself but which he found very emotional, Michael is now looking forward to immersing himself into the role of director for Trinity’s Christmas presentation, a musical adaptation of The Secret Garden.

tHe seCret gArden Michael is very excited at the prospect of directing The Secret Garden and seeing the delight on children’s faces. He is back in territory where he feels comfortable doing something that he loves and it will carry its own pressures, although different from the ones he experienced in King Lear.

The Secret Garden was first produced at the Trinity by Michael back in 1995. It was the start of a succession of dramatised productions that has become the hallmark of the Trinity’s Christmas calendar. Since that first production, the decision was made to continue to produce shows that would stand out as different amidst the usual pantomimes. It was a huge risk at the time and Michael put in much of his own money but the decision paid off and from there we have seen countless re-imaginings of popular literature, including Worzel Gummidge and The Wind in the Willows that have been very successful with local audiences. The Secret Garden will use much of the talent pool within the Trinity family, including actors, production designers and stage workers. What stood out for Michael when he first put The Secret Garden on was the brilliant idea by his designers to use a revolving stage; this visionary idea gave the production a magical feel and speeded up the transitions from one scene to the next. Again, this year’s offering will be full of magic and he will be bringing many of the ideas that worked fifteen years ago to this new production.

tHriVing tHeAtre

When he first put The Secret Garden on, Michael played the Gardener as well as directing, but this time he will give himself no such part. I asked him what would make this year’s production different to the one that was produced years ago and he reminded me that it will be what the actors and designers will bring to the script that will mark it out as unique. Of his own style, Michael says that he is a very open director, choosing not to be autocratic but allowing the creative team the chance to find their way with the story and to breathe. He relies on a very professional team to interpret its own vision and seems to relish in the war of words that carries a production from being good to great. Auditions are open for The Secret Garden and, as with many recent productions, it will be a mix of

professional actors and local amateur talent. His one headache could well be the rehearsal schedule, with amateurs unable to rehearse during the day and children not available until the weekends. It could be a very testing time but the rewards from it are well worth the stress.

Michael Elliott as King Lear

It has been a good year for The Trinity despite the current climate. Figures have proved that here is a theatre thriving from doing the simple things well. The Secret Garden is a genuine family musical that all children will love. Both girls and boys will find characters they can connect with and it has comedy, magic and wonderful musical numbers. This is a must-see for the coming Christmas season. And Michael is a fascinating man, a gem in our arts scene, and I wish him all the continued success for what is a very special theatre. find a secret garden – and manage to find the good in each other. Hodgson Burnett was an Englishwoman who emigrated to America. In the mid-1890s, she returned to England to live at Great Maytham Hall near Rolvenden in Kent. Here, she found a neglected walled garden, which became the inspriation for her novel. Originally published as a serial in an American

magazine, The Secret Garden was published as a book in Britain and America in 1911.

T

his month, I’m going to kick off with Brigadoon – a charming musical from Lerner and Loewe, which tells of a Scottish village that only appears for one day every one hundred years. Of course, love is involved (what else!) and much singing is enjoyed. It was first produced in 1947 on Broadway and ran for over 500 performances. It quickly transferred to the West End with similar success. In 1954 it was turned into an all-star Hollywood movie starring Gene Kelly and Cyd Charisse.

Dave Gorman

Although popular, it does not hold the same place in the heart as other Lerner and Loewe musicals such as My Fair Lady. But it has generated a strong following and has enjoyed many revivals, both professionally and on the amateur stage. TWODS have performed Brigadoon on many occasions and now it returns again with a brand new production at The Assembly Hall Theatre from 22nd November. Featuring much-loved classic songs such as Almost Like Being In Love, this is a wonderfully bright and warm musical that is ideal for the preChristmas chaos. Enjoy!

Arts At tHe MuseuM Moving on from theatre, our museum is continuing to build on its growing reputation as a grand supporter of the arts with its exhibition Artisan at the Museum from 4th November through to the end of December. I love the fact that the musuem is using its space for some really fantastic work and this promises to finish the year off in style.

dAVe gOrMAn And MOre... For those who prefer their comedy a little more surreal, then what better than Dave Gorman’s Powerpoint Presentation to let you into an ordinary world from Mr Gorman’s unique and extraordinary point of view. I remember with fondness his TV series The DG Collection during which he had to find people with the name Dave Gorman, and since then he has built a huge following on stage, on TV and in the book world. Dave Gorman appears for one night on 16th November.

Numberjacks, those super-heroes from CBeebies, have a live show that any young person will surely fall in love with. If you can stand the suspense of the evil Spooky Spoon or The Puzzler (scary characters for a pre-school show in my opinion), then hop along for the live show on 10th November.

gHOstlY Fun! For those of a less nervous disposition and a bit of fire in the belly, a Ghost Walk on The Pantiles surely fits the bill. We have a wonderful history in this town dating back to even before Brian Bissell was born (!) and walking around The Pantiles in the dark while hearing spooky tales could be a perfect antidote to The X-Factor or endless Christmas advertising. Prepare to be scared on the evening of 20th November. Details available at the Tourist Information Centre. tunbridge wells edition

s Double

The Devil

And At trinitY... Trinity Theatre cinema is offering some very powerful movies in its November calendar. First of all comes The Devil’s Double, a bitter and twisted tale about an Iraqi forced to act as a body double for Uday Hussain, Saddam’s son. Excellently played by Dominic Cooper in both parts, he received rave reviews and, from what I have read, went through some personal turmoil playing the two opposing parts. Well worth a look and surprising that a movie like this should come from the director of the awful Bond movie Die Another Day. Showing 20th November. Lars Von Trier is a director who divides opinion with every movie he makes and his latest is no exception. Melancholia is an apocalyptic drama about two sisters during the wedding of one of them, while a planet is on course to collide with the Earth.

A brilliant cast (Kirsten Dunst, Charlotte Gainsbourg, Keifer Sutherland) should make this movie, which was well received at Cannes until Von Trier’s infamous interview. 30th November. To balance these two heavy offerings, The Blind Pig’s Comedy Trot-out comes to the Trinity stage on 25th November and the much-loved Comedy Café returns on 17th November. The Blind Pig is the brainchild of local actor Peter Basham and offers a glorious evening of sketches and hilarity.

...the 5th of November

D

o we really remember the 5th of November? Or is it just an excuse to let off a few fireworks and warm ourselves near a bonfire, while its real origins are lost in time?

susseX bOnFire Well, in the villages of Sussex (and the Kent borders), the bonfire tradition is very much alive, as torch-lit processions, bonfires and fireworks abound from early September onwards. Lewes is, of course, the most famous, with serious attempts by the authorities to stop people from outside the town attending, due to overcrowding. However, the Battel Bonfire Boyes claims to be the oldest bonfire society, with a founding date of 1646. Sussex bonfire societies have their roots in countrywide celebrations that took place in thanksgiving for the uncovering of the Catholic plot to

blow up the Houses of Parliament in 1605 by Guy Fawkes and his fellow conspirators. This is because Catholicism was seen as an undesirable political and religious force in 17th century England. In fact, an act of parliament was passed in 1606 proclaiming the 5th of November to be a day of public thanksgiving. This remembrance was to take the form of a morning church service in every parish, with ringing of bells and cannons firing. Of course, these religious tensions are largely forgotten today in our more tolerant society, but the Gunpowder Plot does have an important place in British history that should not be forgotten. For a listing of bonfire celebrations going on over the month of November visit www.whereinsussex.org.uk/blog/ sussex-bonfire-dates-2011/

gunPOwder, treAsOn & PlOt At trinitY To celebrate bonfire night, once upon a time, children dragged their home-made effigies of Guy Fawkes around on go-carts, but when did you last see local kiddies collecting a penny for the guy? How much is Guy Fawkes remembered by today's children? Well, they are soon about to be illuminated as Moneypenny Productions will be telling them all about it with their explosive new show, Gunpowder, Treason and Plot at the Trinity Theatre. It’s a family show that mixes storytelling, comedy and theatre, and is chocfull of history, hysteria, very silly plots, awful wigs and some very cunning conspiracy theories. Matt Watts, co-writer of the show said, “It seems that Halloween is taking over and people don’t know why we have fireworks on 5th November. With our show, you’ll learn a bit of history, laugh a lot and enjoy a great show for all the family.” For bookings call the Trinity box office on: 01892 678678 5th and 6th November at 3pm. now do this: 1. Preheat the oven to Gas mark 4-5, 180-190°C, 350-375°F. 2. In a small bowl mix the spices and sugar together. 3. Place the joint on a chopping board; make several slashes over the surface of the joint, taking care not to cut the butcher’s string or elasticated meat bands and season. Coat on both sides with the spice mixture. Place the joint on a rack in a roasting tin and open roast for the preferred, calculated cooking time. Cover with foil if browning too quickly. 4. Ten minutes before the end of the cooking time remove the joint from the oven and brush with the Port. Return to the oven for the remainder of the cooking time. 5. Remove the beef from the oven, cover and leave to rest for 15-20 minutes. Meanwhile, to make the gravy, spoon off any excess fat from the roasting tin and discard. Place the tin over a medium heat and sprinkle with the flour. Stir well with a small whisk or spoon, add a little stock and stir again, scraping the base of the pan to release any rich, beefy sediment.

Firework Fun... firework facts

It’s the firework season so here’s a special StayGo history lesson!

The ancient Celts celebrated with bonfires at a festival called Samhain at this time of year! Fireworks were invented in China, around the 7th century AD! We celebrate the 5th November to remember the plot to blow up parliament by Guy Fawkes in 1605! The Russian Tsar Peter the Great held a five-hour firework display to celebrate the birth of his son! The largest firework display ever was held in 2006 in Madeira, when 66,326 fireworks were set off!

the fireworks code It's said every year, but it’s definitely worth repeating. If you are holding a fireworks party, remember the rules:

Keep fireworks in a closed box Follow the instructions Light all fireworks at arms length Stand well back and never go back to a lit firework Never put fireworks in your pocket Never throw fireworks Keep pets indoors Use only BS 7114 fireworks: reputable dealers will only sell fireworks to this British Standard. Sparklers are not for children under 5. Teach older children to hold them at arms length.

staygo meets an eQuine theraPist & horse whisPerer...

natural with horses

N

atasha Rathour is an equine therapist and horse whisperer. She practises in Kent and East Sussex, using natural horse communication techniques. She explained to us how equine therapy works and how it can be of real benefit to people who are experiencing challenges in their life.

what is eQuine facilitated theraPy (eft)? Horses are intuitive and healing beings. When working with horses in a therapeutic environment, you’ll find that they mirror your emotions and issues. They help you get to the core of what’s going on and in turn release inhibitions. It's clinically proven that being in the vicinity of horses changes our brainwave patterns for the better.

how does it work? Participants are invited into a safe space to communicate with horses at liberty. The horse’s body language is then translated in response. A series of individually tailored activities with the horses are then carried out. The whole process helps to deepen awareness of personal issues, core feelings and areas of bodily tension that inhibit a person’s potential.

for children EFT is beneficial to all children. It can help them to develop, learn about themselves and others. It’s a ‘communication therapy’ that proves to be particularly useful for children with learning difficulties, autism, tunbridge wells edition

ADD and bipolar disorders – and those that may find it difficult to express themselves coherently, interact with other people and carry out instructions. Children are usually more in tune with their bodies and feelings. Horses love to be in their company, which is so wonderful to see. Results in children who have taken part in EFT include increased concentration in learning, confidence, motor skills, co-ordination and self control.

get in touch To book an EFT session or find out about other communication techniques such as Native American Horse Whispering, contact: Natasha@ NaturalWithHorses.com www.naturalwithhorses.com Tel: 07981 025656 Follow me on Twitter @Natural_Horses

for adults Adult participants are welcomed into a confidential and non-judgemental, safe space. They are invited to speak their truths and watch how the horses react in response. With my help, the horse leads the way to support the participant to overcome fears, release patterns and emotional blocks. Participants are then set exercises to strengthen themselves emotionally and mentally. Some of the issues that EFT can help with include: bereavement, abuse, financial worries, depression, confidence, career, family and personal life, self-trust and communication plus much more.

how horses helP Horses can help you to release and repair yourself so that you can clear blockages in your life or ask for guidance to change. They lovingly support you into a more confident state. Children realise what they can achieve – their self-esteem, concentration and learning ability increases in leaps and bounds. Adults feel grounded, and are able to release stress and pent up problems.
