On Saturday 17th September, Tunbridge Wells man Brian Bissell takes the stage at the Assembly Hall Theatre for his one-man show: I’m Still Standing! Brian is a well-known local character, who is starring in his fifth charity fundraiser show in the last six years. He is perhaps most famously remembered for his show at the Assembly Hall Theatre in 2007 when he flew onto the stage dressed as Superman! With this new show, he’s raising funds for TS Brilliant Sea Cadets and their band will feature as part of the performance. It’s essentially a variety show with Brian doing his own brand of comedy. It includes some fantastic singers and dancers and an unbelievably talented illusionist. Here, Brian tells all...

BRIAN SAYS: “My theatrical journey began in my early teens when I walked the boards of the Liverpool Playhouse. I was in a three-week production of Shakespeare’s Taming of the Shrew and in my juvenile role as a page boy I was required to dress up as a wife to Sly, a drunkard, for whom the play was being performed by a travelling company of players. My lines were in the introduction scene and I watched the Taming of the Shrew 23 times. By the end of the run I knew most of everyone’s lines – a feat I was never to repeat! Instead of going to RADA, which I had been recommended to do by Willard Stoker, the Playhouse producer at the time, I went to a merchant navy cadet school in Anglesey and subsequently entered the Continued on page 5…

Merchant Navy as a navigating apprentice with Royal Mail Lines. I made a number of voyages to the West Indies, South America and the West Coast of the USA and Canada. It was whilst on one of those voyages to Los Angeles that I paid a visit to downtown Hollywood and Beverley Hills, the home of the stars. I was given tickets to see Jack Benny's show recorded at the CBS Studios and my love of theatre and entertainment was rekindled. When I finally left the Merchant Navy, as a deck officer with Cunard Line, I moved to Royal Tunbridge Wells and discovered within days Tommy Steele filming Half A Sixpence on The Pantiles – I’d seen the show on Broadway 18 months before. I felt immediately at home and knew Tunbridge Wells was a place I could enjoy and become theatrical once again, becoming a member of many of our local theatrical societies.
CHARITY FUNDRAISING Having been a stalwart supporter of local amateur theatre for over 30 years I decided in 2005 to produce my own An Audience With show at Trinity Theatre and was able to have Ken Dodd feature on film along with a filmed interview with Richard Briers. In 2006 I followed with another one-man show. This time I was delighted to welcome on stage with me the late Danny La Rue,

In October 2007 I went to the Assembly Hall Theatre and produced a variety show and managed a Superman spoof, flying onto the stage – and on film over the theatre – with a voice-over by legendary Tom Baker! 2008 saw me return to Trinity Theatre with a show titled Brian Bissell - The Vegas Years! when our very own Rat Pack was featured and great fun was had by one and all. After that show I decided to take a break – I thought the public needed it – but at the end of last year public demand prevailed and I booked the Assembly Hall Theatre once again for my I’m Still Standing! show on Saturday 17th September. Of course I will be featuring some of our own special local talent including singers and dancers and amazing illusionist Jamie Povey (who is still only 19) whom Rowan Atkinson called “Brilliant! Highly recommended!” This forthcoming show I am producing in aid of TS Brilliant Sea Cadets and Marine Detachment, having been a member of their Unit Management for over a year. Their nationally award winning band will feature in the show and it brings together my naval history and love of the theatre. I am also planning another flying sequence – even more spectacular than the last one – along with my own particular brand of comedy routines! I look forward very much to welcoming you at the show! TS Brilliant TUNBRIDGE WELLS SEA CADETS In 2010, TS Brilliant based in Albion Road, entered the Sea Cadets National Band Competition in Plymouth and won. And on 20th August this year they did it again, winning the 2011 competition! And not only that, Ordinary Cadet L. Roberts was awarded Best Drum Major. This is a huge achievement as it only the second time that she has led the whole band on parade, the first being the Royal British Legion Parade through Tunbridge Wells a few weeks ago. Now that truly is something to be proud of!

eptember is the month it all starts up again in provincial theatres and in Tunbridge Wells it is no exaggeration. This month we have a fantastic array of entertainment, from local to professional.SUMMER
THEATRE THE ASSEMBLY HALL First up, we have an award-winning production of The Pitmen Painters, which runs from 5th to 10th September at The Assembly Hall and is touring nationwide. Originally produced by Newcastle’s acclaimed Live Theatre, it received huge critical acclaim and won the Evening Standard award for Best New Play. It tells the story of a group of miners who decide to start painting and is a humorous, moving and timely look at art, class and politics. “I’m Still Standing,” roars Brian Bissell, and he certainly still is with yet another of his truly original and inimitable evenings of memories and stories. Brian is a true Tunbridge Wells stalwart; he probably won’t remember but I know him through my uncle, Tony Armstrong (I was the quiet one in the corner!). TRINITY THEATRE Lee Hurst brings his stand-up to the town for an evening of excellently dry humour on 22nd September. A former panellist on They Think It’s All Over (where did that show go?), Lee has built up a

huge reputation as an innovative and impressive stand-up comedian. The performance is really two shows in one. The first half will see Lee in his element doing his new stand-up show and then in the second half he presents his unique game show MAN v WOMAN. Terence Malick’s film, The Tree of Life, comes to The Trinity on 20th September. Starring Brad Pitt and Sean Penn, this is a slow burner generally about what it says – life. This movie was huge at The Cannes
TRIC IVAL Over the last year the Electric ELEC RN FEST Lantern Festival has split its time E LANT between commissioning new work, The Electric Lantern Festival, or ‘ELF’ as it has come to be known, is a nine-day arts festival for the south east. Taking place in Tunbridge Wells at the start of September, the festival will be an annual event to showcase the work of artists and performers in Kent and Sussex in general and Tunbridge Wells in particular. The festival opens on Saturday 3rd September and runs until the 11th, covering film, art, photography, sculpture, music, drama, comedy, literature and even puppetry. Events will be taking place at venues including the Civic Centre, Trinity Theatre, The Pantiles, Camden Road, and the Salomons Centre.

This very courageous movement held a competition earlier in the year looking for film scripts to be made into short local films. Now the filming is over, it is time for the premieres and screenings will be held at various points across the town.
WHAT’S ON THE PROGRAMME In line with its aims of getting people involved, ELF kicks off with the ‘Splat Mob’ – a community art project being hosted by the Tunbridge Wells Library and Museum. From midday on 3rd September, anyone can show up and let their inner artist loose by contributing to a giant canvas. Throughout the following week, which will have exhibitions of art, sculpture and

Film Festival earlier in the year and is being seen as an early Oscar contender: judge this interesting director’s work for yourself. Dick Barton: Special Agent promises an evening in a similar vein to the hugely popular The 39 Steps in the West End. KATAPULT PRODUCTIONS (Equity Members working for Kent) present a Spoof Radio production of EPISODE I in Phil Willmott’s critically acclaimed and hugely successful series of musical comedies. 16th September at 8pm.

Three days of film follows over the second weekend including screenings of Venus and the Sun from a Tunbridge Wells writer and producer, and featuring Keeley Hazell in her first leading role, Medb Film’s The Calling starring Emily Beecham and Brenda Blethyn, and Africa United by Debs Gardner-Pattison described as the ‘feel-good film of the year’. Also on that weekend is Baba Yaga, a family-friendly puppet show about a terrifying witch who eats children, an X Factor-style short story competition being judged by

professional authors including Sarah Salway, and stage play Beyond Redemption by local playwright Hilary Mackelden. Sunday night will also see the premiere of a collection of short films shot over the summer especially for the festival and brought together into the Tunbridge Wells Movie. Finally, there will be an art market on the Pantiles for the whole of the second weekend where you can pick up an original work of art to enjoy at home.
The festival has been careful to programme a series of events that will provide something for all tastes and persuasions. It promises to be a huge event and I hope that it gets fantastic support. I am honoured to be having a script of my own involved in the festival and look forward to seeing the final production.

CANTABILE: THE LONDON QUARTET
a very special event
O
n 16th September, Tunbridge Wells will be the venue for a very special event indeed. Cantabile, the world-renowned singing group will be performing at King Charles the Martyr, as part of the Tunbridge Wells International Music Festival, which runs throughout the autumn. We caught up with Mike Steffan of Cantabile, while they were on a tour of Canada.
STAYGO: For those who haven’t seen you perform, can you tell us a little bit about what you do? MIKE: We’re essentially just four guys singing mainly a cappella – that is, unaccompanied – although our concert in Tunbridge Wells will be special in that we will have a pianist playing with us for a number of songs, including a number from our latest CD, Songs of Cricket. We’re delighted that we’ll have with us the artist who joined us on the album, Chris Hatt,

Musical Director of Billy Elliot – the Musical, in the West End. We sing a very wide range of music, from Renaissance through to Jazz, with one unifying element (we hope!): FUN.
STAYGO: How does the comedy come into your performance? MIKE: Well, we do sing some categorically funny, jokey absurd musical items (where we pretend to be musical instruments, for instance, or parody a well-known song), and there are some wacky moments scripted between songs — but time and again what people seem to be amused by is the particular chemistry and interaction of our four very different personalities. STAYGO: You travel all over the world. Have you got a favourite country to travel in? MIKE: That’s a great question. Perhaps an indication of what keeps this so fresh for us is that we tend to enjoy wherever we are at any particular moment. At the moment, for instance, we’re in Canada, which has been enormously welcoming to us for almost ten years. For this part of the tour we’re staying in an amazing lakeside hunting lodge and the weather is perfect, so this feels pretty unbeatable — but then next week we’ll be singing outside the town hall of a village near Tarragona on the Costa Brava, a place we’ve been to
twice before and which I know we’ll be enchanted by once again.
STAYGO: Does any one particular performance or event stand out for you in your career so far? MIKE: Wow! You’re putting me on the spot. There are many, but pretty high on the list I would have to include our brief appearance in the rôle of the Embassy Officials in a concert performance of the Tim Rice/ABBA musical Chess, produced by Hugh Wooldridge. This took place on two nights at a packed Royal Albert Hall; our part included acting alongside the star principals, Josh Groban and Idina Menzel. The performance was released by Warner Brothers on CD and DVD, so it also happens to be a performance we can enjoy revisiting! STAYGO: As you say, you’re currently on a tour of Canada. How’s it going over there? MIKE: Very well, thank you; a tour takes us to a mixture of places old and new, including idyllic Prince Edward Island, where we’ve been before — and here, Val d’Or, where we last sang when the temperature was minus 40 degrees Celcius! The majority of concerts here are in Quebec, so we present our concerts in French. STAYGO: You last came to King Charles the Martyr in Tunbridge Wells in 2006. Are you looking forward to coming back? MIKE: Very much so. For all our touring overseas, there’s nothing like a home crowd to understand fully where we’re coming from. The cricket album is perhaps a great example: whether one is a fan of cricket or not, there’s a lot in the songs that is peculiarly English. I was surprised to realise what a vast amount of music has been inspired by this sport; our CD includes folk-songs,

an early 19th century piece by Gustav Holst’s great-grandfather, right up to comedy numbers by Richard Stilgoe and TV theme-tunes.
STAYGO: What’s it like performing in a small space such as King Charles the Martyr, compared to the bigger venues? MIKE: That’s easy (thanks!): we love it. We thrive on being in close proximity to the audience, unmiked. And of course King Charles the Martyr has an especially lovely acoustic, which makes singing all the more pleasurable (for us, at least...)! STAYGO: You’ll be performing your show ‘The Best of British’. What kinds of music does that include? MIKE: Quite a mix, including some ‘pure’ choral singing through to the Beatles and classic British comedy songs. Amongst the cricket items we have something of a gem in the shape of the opening number from a little-known Tim Rice / Andrew Lloyd Webber collaboration entitled – surprisingly enough – Cricket. I think it is precisely by having variety in our choice of music that highlights the finest qualities in each genre; we find that juxtaposing some jazz, for instance, with a piece of early music brings out what’s special in each style. STAYGO: And when you’re not singing, what are your favourite types of music to listen to? MIKE: We do play music CDs when together on tour, but on a long car-journey, as for instance we had yesterday – 8 hours – we’ve taken to listening to audiobooks! Yesterday TUNBRIDGE WELLS edition
was an old transfer of Orson Welles and his Mercury Theatre performing The Thirty-Nine Steps by John Buchan – who, coincidentally, became Governer-General of Canada!
STAYGO: Can you tell us a bit more about Songs of Cricket? MIKE: Cantabile member Mark happened upon a volume of and about the music of cricket called Rhyme and Season by former BBC radio producer, David Rayvern Allen. We had worked with David, so we called him. This led to his devising a series of shows that were put on in the hallowed Long Room at Lord’s, in the course of which we found we had ample material to make the CD. We were thrilled that Richard Stilgoe agreed to guest on the CD, as well as Eliza Lumley, Tim Rice and even Rory Bremner, who incarnated a number of further guest voices!
STAYGO: What are your plans for 2012?
MIKE: We have various new recordings planned, including a CD based around a concert we gave earlier this year at the Musée d’Orsay in Paris of mainly 19th century music. For that we will team up again with our old friend, the renowned classical accompanist Malcolm Martineau. We’re also planning to record repertoire by Mischa Spoliansky, an extraordinary composer whose output encompasses Berlin cabaret from the inter-war years through to scores he wrote in London for MGM films. We’re very pleased, too, to be able to promise that within a number of weeks we hope to make available a much greater number of songs downloadable from the Internet via iTunes, etc. As to other projects in 2012: one of the highlights to which we’re looking forward is our first tour of Estonia, after which we sing for the first time in St. Petersburg. An art exhibition and auction, entitled Lyrical Journeys and organised in aid of Hospice in the Weald, is taking place on Friday 7th October, at the Brew House Hotel, Tunbridge Wells. It is being hosted by pop icon sculptor Guy Portelli, and local celebrities are lining up to create their own ‘secret scribble’ for the fundraising event. Based on an idea first created by the Royal College of Art, Hospice in the Weald has invited a string of personalities from the media, film, television, music and the arts to create their own original piece of

WALKING AT KNOLE Keen walkers can take advantage of organised walks from Knole in Sevenoaks. On the 2nd September, there is a 9-mile round walk to Ightham Mote, stopping for a leisurely lunch. And then on the first Wednesday of each month, there is a long, mid-morning walk around the park at Knole, finishing for lunch at the Brewhouse Tearoom. All tickets for the walks are £1. Cocktails just never go out of style, so if you want to add a touch of sparkle to a party or get-together, we asked Tunbridge Wells Bar & Grill to recommend an easy, cool cocktail recipe to get your party properly started!

glass and half fill with crushed ice. Then mix thoroughly, taking care not to break up the mint leaves. 2. Fill the glass with crushed ice, add a splash of soda and gently mix again, ensuring that all the ingredients are spread evenly throughout the drink. 3. Garnish with a fresh sprig of mint.

WHAT IS INDIAN HEAD MASSAGE? Indian Head Massage has its origins in the ancient holistic system of medicine known as Ayurveda. The techniques have evolved from a rich tradition of family grooming practised in India for over 1000 years. Indian head massage can be seen today performed at street corners, markets, barbers, the beach and homes. The word ‘shampoo’ comes from the Hindi word champna, which means to knead and massage the scalp and hair. Indian head massage is a very effective treatment in reducing stress, tension, aiding relaxation and restoring balance to the body’s natural systems. By detoxifying and eliminating waste products from the body, this in turn provides relief from a wide range of common complaints. Massage techniques repeatedly used in varying combinations reduce
muscle tension and encourage the removal of toxins whilst working on pressure points; in effect helping relieve nervous tension that activates stress points. By helping to rebalance the body, Indian head massage provides effective rejuvenation to both the mind and body, eliciting a feeling of well-being. The treatment is seen as a great natural non-invasive treatment and has numerous physical and psychological benefits:
reducing tension and increasing
flexibility in tense or overworked muscles and helping to prevent stress induced muscle spasms increasing circulation of blood and lymphatic systems, improving delivery of nutrients and speeding up waste removal decreasing heart rate and lowering blood pressure clearing the mind and revitalising mental capacity, improving alertness, concentration and productivity stimulating the release of
endorphins, which reduce pain and elevate the mood, lifting feelings of depression and releasing anxiety providing relief from disorders such as: earache, tinnitus, eye strain, tension headaches, insomnia, stress and associated disorders, sinusitis, hair loss, dandruff
WHAT TO EXPECT… An Indian head massage is typically a seated massage, which includes the shoulders, neck, head and usually face. A treatment lasts between 30 minutes to 1 hour, including a consultation with the therapist to check overall general health, fitness levels and lifestyle regimes. Traditionally oils such as coconut oil, almond oil or aromatherapy oils are used which nourish the scalp and hair, promote hair growth and to add to the healing benefits of the massage.
