Say Goodbye To Hot Flashes
H
Have you ever had this experience? You are at work and then, out of nowhere, you experience a sudden burst of heat in your chest or face that radiates to your whole body. Your face gets flushed and red. Sweat beads form on your temples and trickle down your face or you sweat under your arms. Perhaps your heart starts beating faster. Some people call it a personal summer, but you are having a hot flash or a hot flush. Or maybe this? Perhaps you are sleeping and you wake up because you are feeling too hot or cold only to notice that your pajamas are soaked and your sheets are wet from your sweat. In severe cases you have to change your sheets before you can go back to bed. The night sweat episode you just had has now upset you, as well as interrupted your sleep, causing you to feel more tired the next day. What do hot flashes and night sweats have in common? They are two very common symptoms of menopause or perimenopause that occur due to hormonal imbalances during the menopausal transition. In fact, there are many symptoms that women experience that they might not realize are part of the menopause transition: •
Fatigue or loss of energy
•
Irregular periods
•
Sleeplessness or insomnia
•
Unexplained weight gain
•
Forgetfulness or “fuzzy thinking”
•
Mood changes or irritability
•
Hair thinning or hair loss
•
Loss of sexual appetite or low libido
•
Vaginal dryness
•
Food cravings
•
Digestive problems
•
Anxiety or a feeling of being overwhelmed
patient satisfaction with reduction of symptoms! Once I have evaluated and corrected all other hormonal imbalances, I work with bioidentical hormones as part of the treatment to reduce women’s symptoms and improving overall health. Bio-identical hormones safely and effectively regulate and normalize female hormones thus eliminating symptoms.
During the perimenopause and menopausal process, women may experience more than half of the symptoms listed above. If you are saying “yes” to more than five of these symptoms, you are likely having a hormonal imbalance and could be going into menopause. Is there hope to relieve your symptoms? Absolutely! Many of my patients experience relief using my proven protocols. The key to success is using the right combination of dietary and lifestyles changes along with a prescription plan to balance hormones. Dietary and lifestyle changes Eating a high fiber, nutrient dense whole food diet can reduce menopausal symptoms and improve overall health. Managing stress, sleep and exercise also has an amazing effect on alleviating menopausal symptoms as well. Using these behavioral strategies, along with understanding any underlying hormonal imbalance, can transform your life and your health by getting rid of your menopausal symptoms forever.
What are bio-identical hormones and how do they work? Bio-identical hormones have the exact same chemical structure as the human body. The body cannot tell the difference between bio-identical hormones and the ones your ovaries produce. The estrogen hormones are made from plant substances, usually soy and yams, and converted into the exact form of estrogens our body produces. Bio-identical micronized progesterone is used in combination with estrogens to prevent the increased risk of endometrial cancer in women that still have their uterus. If a woman has had a hysterectomy, then a more personalize bio-identical treatment will have to be tailored for her.
Bio-identical estrogens can be prescribed in pill, a patch, cream, gel, lotion or vaginal preparation form. Progesterones are in capsules or gel form only. Bioidentical hormones have been shown to reduce menopausal symptoms without side effects. Is hormone replacement therapy (HRT) safe? The 2002 Women’s Health Initiative (WHI) found that taking synthetic hormones increased the risk of breast cancer, heart disease, stroke, and blood clots. In contrast, research studies have shown that bio-identical hormone replacement (BHRT) is not only safer than HRT, it is more effective at reducing these symptoms for women as well. Additionally, bioidentical hormones have been shown to be cardioprotective, increase bone density, and prevent some forms of cancer in women. If you are ready to say good bye to menopausal symptoms, call for a free consultation. I successfully help patients all over the country get their energy and health back through balancing their hormones. I want to help you, too. Balancing your hormones is the key When we think of menopause and hormones, the most obvious thought is to look at your female sex hormones. Those are an important part of the puzzle, but we also have to look at testosterone, insulin, cortisol, DHEA and thyroid levels because they have major impacts on female hormone levels. Looking at the total hormonal picture has brought the most patient success and

Improving Your Abdominal Appearance:
T
The desire to improve abdominal appearance is ubiquitous. For some people, it’s about improving contour and having that chiseled appearance to look better than normal. For others, it’s about reducing the quantity of skin and / or fat just to get to a point where they once again look normal. For some, achieving these goals may be easy, whereas for others, it may be very difficult. One of the consequences of getting older is that our metabolism slows down and we tend to accumulate fat in areas that we would like to keep thin, namely the hips and abdomen. With the increasing emphasis and importance of maintaining good health, nutrition and exercise, many people are able to achieve these goals without surgery. However for some, losing that excess skin and fat may prove to be more of a challenge because there may be diet and exercise resistant fat. For those individuals, surgical options such as abdominoplasty or liposuction may be considered, but only when they are good candidates. I want to emphasize the term “good candidates” because there are many factors that must be appreciated when considering surgical approaches to abdominal contouring that include patient expectations, general health, body weight, and quantity of skin and fat. Some patients will be good candidates for liposuction, some will be a good candidate for abdominoplasty, and some may not be a candidate for either. This monograph will review the current indications and surgical options for improving abdominal contour as well as to offer some assistance for individuals considering which option may be most appropriate for them. Abdominoplasty (Tummy Tuck) According to statistics compiled by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), over
106,000 abdominoplasties were performed in 2012 with the vast majority being women (reference: www.plasticsurgery.org). This represents a 70% increase since 2000. The main reason why women choose abdominoplasty is because they want to improve abdominal appearance by simultaneously removing skin and fat. Many will report one or more factors that have led them to this decision that include but are not limited to pregnancy, advancing age, weight fluctuations, heredity, and prior abdominal operations. In order to be considered a good candidate for a tummy tuck, one should be in good physical and mental health, maintain a stable weight, and avoid all tobacco products. It is always emphasized that proceeding with a tummy tuck should not be perceived as a substitute for dieting, exercise, and weight loss. In women, that are overweight, my advice is to attempt conservative measure such as dieting and exercise first in order to stabilize their weight. In women that are able to do this successfully, results have been more predictable and reproducible and women have been generally happier with the results. I also advise women that are considering future pregnancies to postpone having a tummy tuck until having children is complete.
During the initial consultation, your board certified plastic surgeon will determine if you are a good candidate based on the factors reviewed. Some women will be candidates for a mini-abdominoplasty that requires less skin and fat removal;
www.SomersetCountyWJ.com
whereas, other will require a full-abdominoplasty to optimally contour the skin. Your plastic surgeon will review this during the consultation and determine which would be most appropriate. Some women may have a localized area of fat excess and be a better candidate for the less invasive procedures such as liposuction rather than a tummy-tuck. Liposuction will be reviewed later in the monograph. Your surgeon should also review the risks and benefits of having a tummy tuck, take photographs, and discuss cost. As with any operation, there are certain adverse events can occur with an abdominoplasty. These include but are not limited to bleeding, infection, scar, fluid collection, delayed healing and contour irregularities. Fortunately, these are uncommon and the vast majority of women are very pleased with the outcome. The cost of an abdominoplasty will vary based on where you live and surgeon experience. Keep in mind that this is a cosmetic operation and rarely covered as an insurance benefit. In general, you should plan on 30 to 45 minutes for the consultation. The procedure itself is generally straightforward and usually takes about 2 hours. General anesthesia is usually recommended but it can sometimes be performed under twilight anesthesia in conjunction with a local anesthetic. The incision usually extends from hip to hip and is located just above the pubic bone so it’s is nicely concealed within the bikini line. Sometimes a second incision around the belly button is necessary in situations where extensive abdominal contouring is needed (full-abdominoplasty). In some women that have had children, the muscles supporting the abdomen may slightly
10
separate resulting in a condition known as rectus diastasis. This condition can be repaired during an abdominoplasty by suturing the supportive structures and muscles back together along the midline to eliminate that central midline bulging. Once the excess skin and fat are removed, the incision is closed in layers using dissolvable sutures. A drainage tube is usually placed above the muscle layer to remove any fluid that may accumulate. This is usually removed a few days after surgery. An abdominal binder may also be recommended for support and to reduce the amount of swelling. Abdominoplasty is usually performed as an outpatient procedure but on rare occasions, overnight hospitalizations may be recommended for safety reasons. Following the tummy tuck, your abdomen will be firmer and the excess skin and fat will be gone. Initially, there may be some mild swelling but this diminishes after a few weeks. Your plastic surgeon will prescribe pain medication and antibiotics (when needed) as indicated. Be prepared to walk in a slightly flexed position at the waistline until the incisions heal and the skin elasticity returns (usually a few days). I typically instruct patients that it’s ok to shower and get the incisions wet after 3 days. I also advise patients that it’s ok to drive when they are off their pain medication and they have full range of motion (usually 7 – 10 days). Most patients are able to resume normal activities after about 1 month. Abdominal Liposuction Liposuction has been one of the most common cosmetic procedures performed in the USA. According to ASPS statistics, over 200,000 liposuctions procedures were performed in 2012 (reference: www.plasticsurgery.org) .

Dr. Nahabedian has also been a visiting professor 55 times over the past 8 years at various universities and hospitals around the country.
Exercise, Liposuction or Abdominoplasty
Abdominal liposuction is ideal for women with a localized area or areas of excess fat. It is an excellent way to improve abdominal contour and proportion in a much less invasive manner. Although liposuction has been shown to be safe and effective for fat removal, it should not be perceived as a substitute for weight loss, good eating habits, and regular exercise or as a treatment for obesity. Individuals considering liposuction should consult a board certified plastic surgeon to determine if you are a good candidate. Ideal candidates for abdominal liposuction are in good physical and mental health and are within 30% of their ideal body weight. Good candidates for abdominal liposuction will typically have firm, elastic skin with good muscle tone. As is the case with all patients seeking cosmetic surgery, avoidance of tobacco products is strongly recommended to reduce the risk of complications. During your consultation, the plastic surgeon will typically assess your expectations and what you hope to achieve, obtain a comprehensive history, perform a physical examination, review the treatments options, discuss complications, and take photographs. As technology has made a big splash in our everyday lives, so have the options for liposuction. Traditional liposuction is still the most common and involves the insertion of a blunt tip cannula into the area of localized fat in order to suction out the fat. This is achieved using a negative pressure apparatus to generate the suction
force. Newer technologies will use ultrasound or radiofrequency waves to dissolve or breakup the localized fat followed by the suction phase. Still newer technologies will utilize external devices that will cool or freeze the localized fat resulting in fat dissolution. Your plastic surgeon should review these options and determine which is preferable for you. Whenever considering liposuction, you should be aware of the potential complications. Fortunately, liposuction is considered a relatively simple procedure and the vast majority of patient do very well and are very happy with the outcome; however, there are situations when things may not go as expected. Adverse events are related to various factors that include but are not limited to the length of the procedure, the amount of fat removed, and whether or not additional procedures are performed. Some of these adverse events include irregular contour, waviness of the skin, fluid collections, infection, and the need for a “touchup or additional procedures. More serious adverse events include blood clots (deep venous thrombosis) with dislodgment of these clots to the heart and lungs (pulmonary embolus). Most liposuction procedures are performed as an outpatient; however, in some situations, an overnight stay in a hospital like setting is recommended. Some of the reasons for an overnight hospitalization include removal of more than 5 liters of fat or it the operation requires more than 5 hours. Fluid and electrolyte imbalances may occur in these situations. Performing simultaneous operations such as breast surgery and abdominal contouring procedures may also increase the chances of a complication.
The steps of the traditional liposuction operation are relatively straightforward. Liposuction is sometimes performed under general anesthesia (completely asleep) or twilight anesthesia (light sleep) with the addition of a local anesthetic agent. Your plastic surgeon may recommend one or the other. Small incisions will be made at specific locations on your abdomen followed by the instillation of a tumescent fluid into the fat compartment. This fluid is comprised of saline, lidocaine, and epinephrine and is used to constrict the blood vessels in the area, to minimize intraoperative and postoperative bleeding, and to expand the fat compartment. About 20 minutes later, a thin hollow tube or cannula is inserted and attached to a suction device to remove the fat. This is performed using back-and– forth movements either manually or with a power-assisted device. The suctioning is continued until the desired contour is achieved. The small incisions may be closed or left open and bandages are applied. Recovery following liposuction of the abdomen is usually easier than abdominoplasty. Patients should refrain for strenuous activities or exercise for about 1 month. Compression garments
Maurice Nahabedian, MD, FACS Professor: Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery Georgetown University Washington DC
11
are essential. I explain to all patients considering liposuction that removal of the fat completes about 60% of the task and that adequate postoperative compression completes the rest. For this reason, compression garments are recommended and should be worn continuously for several weeks. Failure to do so will result in prolonged swelling and a less desirable outcome. Showering is permitted 3 days following liposuction. Pain medication and antibiotics are prescribed as indicated. Most patients are able to resume normal activities after 4-6 weeks.
In summary, both abdominoplasty and liposuction are safe and effective methods to achieve improvement in abdominal appearance. That said, dieting and exercise are highly recommended both before and after these procedures. When considering these options, it is recommended to consult with a board certified plastic surgeon to determine which may be the most appropriate.

Our Ears Hear-Or Do They?
W
We live in a world that is rich with sounds, from soft like a whisper to loud like a jet turbine engine. Sound can have so much meaning and evoke emotion—the sound of a gentle kiss on the cheek or a siren screeching as it passes by. Hearing is one of our 5 traditional senses and is where sound is perceived. Humans are capable of hearing from 20Hz (very low bass) to 20,000Hz (very high pitch). Everyday conversation generally falls in the frequency range of 250Hz to 8000Hz. Equally important is how we hear Since childhood, we have been taught that we hear with our ears, but that is only partially correct. The ears are merely the end organs that take external sound vibrations, and through an intricate and sophisticated process, convert them to mechanical information in the middle ear, which then travels through the inner ear where tiny hair cells are stimulated that send impulses the hearing nerve to the auditory cortex in the brain—the hearing center. In other words, if sound doesn’t reach the auditory cortex of the brain – no sound is heard. Here are some facts we know: Statistics show that approximately 40 million adults in the United States report some degree of hearing loss. Hearing loss due to aging (presbycusis), affects approximately 35% of individuals over 60 years of age. Unfortunately, what used to be considered an older person’s problem is quickly becoming a serious issue with today’s youth. What can be done to protect your hearing? Research shows that exposure to excessive noise levels are the leading cause for permanent damage to the ear resulting in hearing loss and tinnitus, which is a ringing in the ears. The average conversation is around 65 decibels (dB) which
is how sound intensity (loudness) is measured. A concert or leaf blower is 115dB, whereas a firearm is 135dB. Sound levels exceeding 100dB for more than 30 minutes continuously is dangerous to our ears. There are 3 highly effective options for hearing conservation. First, turn the volume down. It is a simple solution if you can control the sound source. The rule of thumb is if you are 3 feet away and have to raise your voice in order for the other person to hear you, than it is too loud. Second, walk away. The more distance between you and the offensive sound, the better. And third, wear proper ear protection.
great time, no one is suggesting otherwise, but everyone should also be empowered with information that helps them make informed decisions so they can choose how they wish to (safely) participate in these types of activities. Let’s also consider a child attending an event who is innocently following the guidance of the adult. If the person behind them starts blowing some obnoxious instrument like a plastic horn or vuvuzela, or screams out loud at levels that are toxic to the hearing system, than this child never stood a chance nor were they protected from what could eventually result in permanent hearing loss and/or tinnitus.
There are different types of ear protection that are designed for specific environments. Ear muffs or plugs are great for mowing the lawn because they dampen excessive noise levels. However, if you are attending a concert, sporting event, movie theatre, or any desired noisy event than you will want to wear a different form of ear protection that is conducive to that particular environment, such as musician plugs. Musician plugs offers a flat attenuation of the sound while maintaining the integrity of the sound – basically, speech and music sounds clear without being muffled. These types of ear plugs are available in non-custom form found at major music stores and you don’t have to be a musician to wear them. They can also be custom made to fit your ear comfortably and aesthetically by your local audiologist.
It is interesting to note that in preparation for a December Monday Night Football game, head coach Sean Payton contacted Brett Favre to ask him how he combatted the loud noise levels inside the Seahawks stadium that was purposefully designed to acoustically enhance the sound levels (exceeding 120dB) making it difficult for the team to hear themselves inside the huddle and while they played. Favre told him to order custom noise reduction
But I love my music LOUD! In our society, the definition of “fun” is often equated with “volume.” Simply put, the louder it is, the better. So let’s consider a sporting event … fans in the stands are encouraged to “get LOUDER,” “break the sound barrier,” “scream and shout”… all good as along as everyone understands the consequences. Everyone should be entitled to go out and have a

ear plugs – as a result, 20 pair were ordered for the team! While it is true that for most, it will take repetitive exposures of excessive noise levels over a period of time before permanent damage to the hearing system is done, there are many for whom it takes only one assault to change their world and turn it upside down. Be wise and choose to properly protect your ears from dangerous noise levels. There are no second chances. Hearing the world and people around you in its natural splendor for many years to come is not only priceless, but a gift easily worth giving and protecting. Happy Holidays!

Most of the time, we are able to cope fairly well with the day-today stress of life as well as the unforeseen rough patches. But there may be times in our lives when we need extra support in getting through a difficult time. Because we are living longer, older adults can be faced with acute and chronic health problems that can create unique stress and make coping with other life challenges particularly difficult. Because of these real needs, psychosocial support through psychotherapy is among vital services provided to there residents at Independence Manor.

Health andMedical By Joanne Price Joanne Price became ill in 1997, was diagnosed with Still’s Disease in 2007 and became disabled from work in 2008. Her search for help revealed a need in our area, so Joanne started The Autoimmune Support Group in 2009. Debilitated but never defeated, Joanne worked toward her bachelor’s degree one class at a time. In 2009, she graduated Summa Cum Laude from Kean University and was inducted into the Phi Kappa Phi National Honor’s Society. In 2013 she launched a website. Because Joanne’s husband is a disabled veteran, she has the unique perspective of both patient and caregiver, which is related through her weekly blog, “Living With Chronic Illness.” Presently in partial remission, Joanne aspires to grow the group to reach all those in need.
Understanding Grief With Chronic Illness
C
Certain chronic illnesses overwhelmingly attack women. There are over 80 autoimmune diseases including Multiple Sclerosis, Rheumatoid Arthritis, and Lupus. The National Institute of Health states there are 40 million people suffering with an autoimmune disease and 80-90% are women. Five million people are diagnosed with Fibromyalgia, ninety percent of whom are women. According to the CDC, one million people are debilitated by Chronic Fatigue Immune Dysfunction Syndrome (CFIDS/ CFS), four out of five of which are women. All of the above illnesses share many physical symptoms, and like death and terminal illness, also share the grieving process. Did you know that chronic illnesses can initiate the grieving process? These patients are so ill that they often lose their ability to work, enjoy hobbies, or even to care for themselves. What are the 5 Stages of Grief ? 1. Denial - A patient may initially refuse to accept the diagnosis. The truth may be too painful for them. This stage is the mind’s temporary fix from the emotional pain. 2. Anger - Anger is a coping mechanism to deflect pain. It is far less scary to be angry than to sit with the pain of reality. No one is spared, even inanimate objects!
quite often too sick to drive a car or perform necessary daily tasks. They often have difficulty with memory and concentration. They may feel that no one understands or even believes they are sick.
feels no one will believe just how sick they really are or understand what they are going through. You may need to address the depression of your loved one if you notice changes in sleep patterns, loss of appetite or isolation. What can you do? You can make sure that they get an evaluation from their doctor. Together, the doctor and your loved one will determine if there is a need for professional therapy.
5. Acceptance - Acceptance is a gift. Peace is finally reached. The patient may set new attainable goals. Just as there is no cookie-cutter way to grieve the loss of a loved one, there is no wrong way to grieve the health and life once dreamed of. Stages can be entered in any order and for any amount of time.
Participation in a support group is a great way to supplement traditional therapy. A support group is a meeting where people in similar circumstances come together to discuss their problems, share ideas and learn coping skills. The Autoimmune Support
To make the grieving process even more challenging, acceptance can easily be overturned by new symptoms, a secondary diagnosis or an exacerbation of the illness. Information regarding exacerbations leads to the assumption that there will be periods of complete remission. The reality is much different. “Flare-ups” can last years. Some patients are chronically sick with no end in sight.
Many patients are too sick or too depressed and often do not have the physical strength or wherewithal to investigate therapy or support groups. Won’t you take this important step for your friend, loved one or for yourself ? Testimonial “I have been attending The Autoimmune Support Group for four years. Joanne is a compassionate and dedicated Leader. This group is the one place I feel I can openly express myself and get the support from other group members. For me, it’s my “safe haven.” -D.P. Support for those coping with Chronic Illness
Living with a chronic illness can sometimes feel like more than you can handle. However, people living with chronic illness can and do go on to live full and happy lives. The key is surrounding yourself with people who understand and will support your effort to reach the final phase of grieving. The acceptance phase often brings with it new hobbies, new goals, and new friends. There is happiness after diagnosis.
3. Bargaining - As reality begins to set in, the patient may experience helplessness. Bargaining with God is a way of trying to regain control of the situation. To help your loved one, please ask questions such as “How are 4. Depression - Sadness is you really doing?” and let them expected, but these illnesses know you really care. Don’t just are by their very nature, accept the standard, “I’m fine,” isolating. These patients are answer. Your loved one probably

Health andMedical By Nadiv Shapira MD, FACS, FACPh Dr. Shapira opened First State Vein and Laser Center in January 2011. One year later he left his 20-year old practice as a Cardio-thoracic surgeon at Christiana Care Health System in Wilmington, Delaware to devote his entire career to the practice of Phlebology. He offers in-depth evaluations and a wide range of minimally and non-invasive interventions. In January 2013, together with his wife Lynn and a devoted and highly skilled team, he was one of the first in the area to add the “Medispa” concept to his practice.
Your Little Veins Matter Too!
I
I often reflect back on my experience at First State Vein and Laser Center, thinking about what matters most to my patients. Obviously, patients that have “big” unsightly, bulging, winding painful veins are concerned about them. But I realize that it’s the “small” things that really matter to the majority of the patients. “Small” things like reducing downtime, lessening discomfort and the possibility of scarring - matter. To most, it is also the small veins that frequently matter. Even after ablation (closure) of an incompetent great saphenous vein, the source of their initial complaint, I am often asked what can be done about the remaining bulging vein, or about the small stubborn blue-purple spider veins. Obviously, we are concerned about life threatening D.V.T. (deep vein thrombosis) or leg ulcers. But for most patients, it is irrelevant; they don’t have them. Most are bothered by non-critical vein problems. As ‘vein doctors’ we should address the entire spectrum of vein problems, should not ignore patient’s strong wishes and treat what matters to them - the big and the small veins. What is Venous Insufficiency? Uni-directional valves are essential to insure the flow of blood from superficial to deep veins and from the legs to the heart. These valves are present in ALL veins, the tiniest and the largest
Underlying Venous Insufficiency Can Be Treated By: Foam Sclerotherapy - the injection of a sclerosant mixed with CO2 to close reticular veins.
alike. When these valves leak or become incompetent, the blood flows backwards, pools within the veins and weakens their walls. This condition, called venous insufficiency, may occur in veins of all sizes. In large ‘trunks’ like the great saphenous vein, this will result in what is commonly known as varicose veins, while in smaller (2-3 mm) veins under the skin (reticular veins) it will produce spider veins.
Phlebectomy - a delicate surgical removal of small or large bulging veins. Ultrasound guided sclerotherapy - a closure by sclerosant of deep incompetent perforating veins, under ultrasound guidance.
Spider Veins - Often Part of a Bigger Problem As mentioned above, leaky valves in reticular veins result in spider veins. These can be isolated phenomena. But spider veins can also be a manifestation of a deeper, larger vein’s insufficiency that over the years has gradually affected more superficial veins and eventually, reaches the reticular veins. A patient who comes in for the treatment of spider veins, should be first assessed to determine whether these are an isolated issue, or part of a broader and deeper, problem.
Endo venous laser ablation - laser closure of large incompetent veins. At First State Vein and Laser Center we offer all these modalities, alone or in combination, in order to reach the most desirable longlasting results. Our success is measured by the ability to understand, diagnose and explain to our patients what their particular underlying venous problems are and how we plan to solve them. We are committed to address the entire spectrum of their problems, the small, as well as the big issues.
Isolated Spider Veins Can Be Treated By: Sclerotherapy – closure of the veins by injection of a chemical solution called sclerosant, ideal for spider veins 0.8 - 1.2mm in width.
Testimonial I vacillated for years with the
Ohmic Thermolysis - works by a heat generated by radiofrequency device called “Vein Gogh”, best for spider veins smaller than 0.8mm in width.

idea of having a procedure done, to eliminate my spider and varicose veins. I had been to a few dermatologists but, just never felt comfortable enough to move forward. Then my sister-in-law told me about First State Vein and Laser MediSpa. She had been to Dr. Shapira and her great results and told me to call. I did just that; and from my very first appointment, I knew Dr. Shapira could help me. He took the time to determine the cause of my issues and then to explain exactly what needed to be done. He assured me he could help my legs look and feel better and he did! I cannot say enough good things about Dr. Shapira and his staff; they are incredibly knowledgeable and friendly. This was the first summer in years that I was actually comfortable wearing shorts and dresses.

A lot of women needlessly endure stress urinary incontinence (SUI), a condition in which they experience an involuntary loss of urine when they laugh, sneeze or exercise. In fact, SUI is the most common form of incontinence in women, impacting 28 percent of women age 30-39 and about half of women over 50, according to a recent University of Washington survey. There are many treatment options for this condition, both surgical and non-surgical. One of the surgical options is a sling operation. This is an effective procedure involving the placement of support material through small incisions in the vagina. There are many types of slings, most of which have been used successfully for more than 15 years. However, concerns have been raised recently about complications associated with synthetic slings. In 2011, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration issued an alert on the use of some types of slings for incontinence surgery. Consequently, we often see patients in our office who are frightened at the prospect of getting any type of sling to resolve their issues with leaking. However, there are a number of slings that are highly effective and have very low risk. Learn the facts When considering any kind of surgery, you shouldn’t be shy about asking all the questions you would like answered. To get the information you need to

days to a few weeks. After they recover, about 85 percent of women will be able to jog, sneeze or laugh at good joke without leaking. So is a sling right for you?
A urogynecologist who is experienced in both surgical and nonsurgical treatments for SUI will answer your questions and provide you with the information you need so that you can make an informed decision.
Bladder problems shouldn’t keep you from the things you enjoy most in life.
A vaginal sling is a sort of hammock. It provides support for the urethra, the tube that carries urine from the bladder. That support keeps the urethra from opening and spilling urine when you do jumping jacks, have a coughing fit or do other activities that result in leaking. The mesh is made from polypropylene, a form of plastic. It has been used safely for more than 30 years in many surgical procedures, such as hernia repairs and vascular surgery. Know your options According to the FDA, the use of slings to treat SUI is less invasive than repairs that don’t involve slings, which require a larger incision in the abdominal wall. Because there is less cutting of tissues, patients can expect less pain and a quicker recovery.
Let us help you get back to what really matters.
Sling procedures involve tiny cuts about the size of an eraser head. So there is very little scarring. The outpatient procedure for the slings takes about 20 minutes and is performed under anesthesia. Within 36 hours, most women are back on their feet, feeling as if they have not had surgery. The time for a full recovery varies with the individual, from a couple of

Should Know
About Mammograms
information provided by Care First –Blue Cross BlueShield www.carefirst.com
Many women are afraid of mammograms but having one is definitely worthwhile. In fact, it can even save a woman’s life. If the test is normal, you will feel better knowing that you are OK. If however; there is a problem, it is better to know early. Regular mammograms can detect breast cancer BEFORE it spreads. Treatment works best when the cancer is found early. Make an appointment to see your Doctor for a mammogram if you fall under any of these categories that pose a higher risk: •
Your Mother OR sister has/had breast cancer
•
You have Jewish ancestors from Eastern Europe (A certain gene is carried among this group)
•
You had your first menstrual period before age 12
•
You NEVER had children OR you had your first child after age 30
•
You had radiation treatments to your chest area
•
You have a lump, nipple, discharge, breast pain or dimpling of skin on the breast
Breast cancer is NOT a death sentence when detected early. Detection at later stages may be managed with all the new technologies and treatment available. It is never too late to be evaluated and undergo treatment. There is life after the diagnosis. FACE YOUR FEAR and TAKE CHARGE!!
Starting at age 40 women should have a mammogram every 1 – 2 years. If you feel a lump, see or have questions about anything unusual in your breast contact your health care provider.
When should I have a mammogram?
How do I get ready for my mammogram? • Make the appointment for 1 week after your period, when the breasts are less sensitive. • Wear a shirt with shorts, pants or skirt. This makes easier to undress from the waist up.
it
• Do not wear deodorant, perfume, lotion or powder under arms or on your breasts on the day of your appointment. These products make shadows on the mammogram.

Tell Your Story of Survivorship! By Trudy K. Perry Trudy K. Perry is a co-founder of Taking Flight and is a long-time activist for women having worked with Wider Opportunities for Women and Dr. Dorothy Height and the National Council of Negro Women. Trudy is most interested in Taking Flight collecting breast castings and stories of women globally to highlight the common experiences of women throughout the world.
Live Out Loud. Take Control.
E
Every woman has a story to tell. Some women keep journals to help get hold of whatever’s happening in life at the moment or maybe to hold a memory so that years later those feelings can be summoned again. Women fighting breast cancer have profound stories on the experience of battling the disease and the feelings that come with the work of accepting their changing bodies. The Pink Project recently began to help breast cancer survivors who are interested in celebrating themselves and sharing their life experiences. With tender care Creative Director Donna BeaverYoung makes a plaster-of-paris casting of each participant’s breasts and helps her turn a stark white casting into a masterpiece that captures her essence. Even more poignant, each woman writes a one- page essay of her experience. These stories give
voice to overwhelming fears, living though pain, coming to terms with physical changes, and redefining beauty and self. Women write about receiving love and support from medical personnel, new friends and strangers. This is heavy duty stuff and not for the faint hearted. Participants have shared that creating the casting and telling their stories has been empowering and rewarding. Participating in the work is therapeutic and cathartic as each woman loudly asserts her authority over her body. The work helps sister survivors see possibilities of life in the struggle as it encourages healthy women to get mammograms and do self breast checks.
Taking Flight hopes the exhibit heightens awareness of the disease and encourages women to get mammograms. Through The Pink Project, Taking Flight works to help survivors voice their experiences and builds empathy for the lives of women. So far Taking Flight’s exhibit of it’s’ project Telling Intimate True Stories, featuring all women, has been in restaurants in Washington, DC and Richmond. The organization hopes to exhibit The Pink Project in hospitals where women receive treatment for breast cancer.
Elizabeth
Taking Flight, the non-profit that operates the Pink Project, plans to exhibit the work to the public giving people a window into the lives of breast cancer survivors.
I felt a lump, but I didn’t feel bad. I didn’t lose weight. There were no obvious symptoms. Once it was confirmed that the lump was indeed breast cancer it was a surprise to everyone except me. The only symptoms I ever had were caused by the medicines that I took like the four courses of chemotherapy that made me anemic and very ill. The six-week radiation treatment irritated my skin, and the five-year course of followup has thrown me into full and unexpected menopause. It turned my life around... I put a picture of a tree where the cancer was in my breast casting. I imagined something beautiful growing in the space where the doctors took out the tumor. … I never completed reconstruction of my left breast because I couldn’t stand the
thought of one more day in surgery. Instead I went out for a long walk with my family. I’ve been walking ever since. According to the Susan G. Komen Foundation breast cancer is the most common cancer found among every racial and ethnic group in the U.S. In 2013, it is estimated that among U.S. women there will be 232,340 new cases of invasive breast cancer and 39,620 breast cancer deaths. Breast cancer rates in the U.S. vary by race and ethnicity. White women have the highest breast cancer incidence rate of any racial or ethnic group. African American and Hispanic/ Latina women are more likely than white women to be diagnosed with later stage breast cancer. The two most common risk factors for breast cancer are being female and getting older. Taking Flight works with all women and has a goal to work internationally capturing broad diversities in race, socio- economic status, ethnicity, religion, sexual preferences and health status. Taking Flight operates The Pink Project to bring attention to breast health and help women assaulted by breast cancer. First Impressions, Last Impressions…
D
Do you remember the old adage, “first impressions, last impressions?” Psychologists have studied the fact that upon meeting a person for the first time, the brain forms a mental image. The primary formation of that image has power over thoughts. The question is: can we take our first not-so-good impressions back? Here are a few reasons making a first impression on paper can make or break a connection. Cover Letters and Resumes: The ever so familiar task of writing a resume—with visually appealing formatting—can create an immediate response from an employer. Improving your resume can create a good first impression that might get your foot in the door for a well-earned interview. Nicely prepared resumes and cover letters can make you seem competent, prepared for the challenges of a job, well spoken, and computer savvy. You may consider sending job application materials to a professional editor. You’ll feel more confident getting that basic cover letter polished by an editor before putting it out there. Online Dating Profiles: More than ever before, singles are using the internet to meet new potential dating partners. The problem is that first impressions do not only involve photographs but personal write-ups. It’s surprising to see how many men and women either
express themselves in words poorly or very well. The difference can put off English grammar nerds nationwide. A poorly written profile may leave you unknowingly passed off as incompetent, irresponsible, careless and socially inept. Admissions Essays: Top colleges and universities expect the highest standards of competency from their students and prospective ones. When it comes to application admission essays, issues with content and organization can devastate your chances of getting into the best schools. An editor can make positive changes here. Don’t hesitate to obtain a second opinion before those applications get mailed off. Business Proposals: When it comes to writing a proposal, it’s so important to clearly and accurately explain intentions, needs and requirements. Your chances of obtaining financing for a project can oftentimes rely on how well your point comes across. Get a crucial second look before you turn it into your supervisors.

7 Things A Woman Should Do After The Loss Of A Spouse
T
The loss of a spouse can be a devastating, life-changing event. Sadly, for many women, becoming a widow is a first step toward economic hardship. That’s why it’s critical for you to organize your finances after your spouse’s death and take ongoing steps to secure your financial future and that of your family. Locate important documents and financial records These include your spouse’s will and other estate planning documents (e.g., trust), insurance policies, bank and brokerage statements, stock and bond certificates, deeds, Social Security number, birth and marriage certificates, and certified copies of the death certificate. Set up a communications tracking and filing system Set up a system to record incoming and outgoing calls and mail. For phone calls, keep a notebook handy where you can write down the caller’s name, date, and subject of the call. For mail, keep track of what you receive and whether a response is required by a certain date. Finally, create a filing system for important documents and correspondence with separate folders for different topics. Seek professional advice to settle the estate and file tax returns Getting expert help from an attorney, accountant, and/or financial and tax professional. An attorney can tell you what
procedures to follow. A tax professional can help you file certain federal and state tax returns that may be due. A financial professional can help you by conducting a comprehensive review of your financial situation and identifying any retirement and survivor’s benefits that may be available to you. Apply for benefits You’ll need to contact several institutions for information on how you can file for benefits, namely, life insurance company, Social Security Administration and your spouse’s employers. If your husband was a Federal, state or local employee or in the military, you may be eligible for government-sponsored survivor’s benefits.
Evaluate short-term expenses You may have immediate expenses to take care of, such as funeral costs or outstanding debts your husband may have incurred. You can use credit cards for certain expenses or you can try to negotiate with creditors to allow you to postpone payment for 30 days or more, if necessary. Make sure you have one or more credit cards in your name, and when you can, order a free copy of your credit report and review it for accuracy.
Avoid hasty decisions Go at your own pace, not someone else’s. For example, don’t commit to move from your current home until you can make a decision based on reason instead of emotion. Don’t spend money impulsively. Don’t cave in to pressure to sell or give away your spouse’s possessions. Find out where you stand financially before you make any large purchases, sell property, or loan money to others. Update account names You may need to contact financial institutions to change account names and/or update contact information.

Purposeful Focus
W
We all have had our trials and tribulations throughout our lives. It is how we react to these obstacles that give birth to our new desires. For example, if you do not feel well, it would only be natural for you to desire health. While desire motivates you to a new achievement, longevity and focus is what determines if you get there or not. This is evident everywhere we look, no matter what the goal is or what you wish to achieve. Any new goal will require a life style change and a commitment to it. That being said, there are always definite ways to maximize your efforts. In a world of instant gratification, it has become almost instinctual that we wish to see the fruits of our labors instantly. When we do not, we usually become discouraged and give up immediately. This is especially predominant with health and fitness goals. Many of us have hoped, prayed and tried everything imaginable to have that ideal body, only to fail. One major reason for this failure is the fact that there is, nor ever will be, a one size fits all, or even one size fits many as far as the human body is concerned. There are thousands of variables inside a sea of unlimited possible
life experiences, all of which will have drastic effects on your fitness efforts. In order to push yourself in the right direction, you need to know alot about your body. Your strengths, your weaknesses, things you can do and things you shouldn’t do. An honest assessment is needed, and very few are qualified to do such a thing. If you had a collapsed roof, you would hire a well qualified, reputable and accredited roofer to fix it. Your roofer would come to your home evaluate the situation, perform the job and the result would be a leak-proof roof for your efforts. This is exactly why when, improving any given body, it would be best to hire a professional, because of their vast fitness knowledge, uncanny understanding of the human body and a never yielding commitment to the client. One way to ensure you’re getting a well qualified, reputable and accredited trainer is to consider the assistance of a Master Personal Trainer.
faster than a normal personal trainer. This can make your 3 months of workouts as effective as an entire year of old fashioned training. A master personal trainer takes the latest kinesthetic, medical and exercise physiological information and applies this to your specific body. This means you will see dramatic results in 30 days and a complete body overhaul in 90. It is very motivating to see results so fast; also master trainers can rehab any injury in conjunction with these goals. What can be
Typically, a master personal trainer can get you results that are 5 times
more motivating than looking and feeling your best in a few short months? Most Master Personal Trainers will offer you a free trial session so you can experience the difference between them and an ordinary trainer. Words cannot do justice of how life changing this service is for people. At the very least, you have a fitness guru for an hour to give you free advice and guidance. goal in mind, to help families in need. After the 1st Annual Youth Explosion Talent Show in October 2012, the board members of FORNJ approached a mother of two wheel-chair bound sons living with cerebral palsy to see if she needed any assistance. In 2013, after interviewing the single mother, it was obvious that she struggled with consistent and competent assistance in order to fulfill the day-to-day needs for the physical care of her sons. After the FORNJ board discussed those needs, the organization was able to help her access the numerous resources she did not know were available to her. This is what FORNJ is all about.
During the calendar year, FORNJ puts on several events with a single

More Confidence – And Feeling Good Inside Makes You Look Even Better Outside.
If you’ve never had a bra fitting, or it’s just been a while, don’t put if off any longer. You’ll find friendly and helpful trained fitters to take the worry and apprehension out of finding the right bra.
www.SomersetCountyWJ.com
You should get fitted every six months. Our bodies change all the time, so it’s really important to keep checking your bra size. Once your correct size has been determined, our experts will assist you in picking the right style for your body type. The size range of our bras helps our fitters to accommodate most women. But, remember, you may not take the same size bra in every style. Each bra is cut differently, just like jeans or skirts. You may take a certain size in one brand, but something else in another. There is no “one size accommodates all” in bra fitting. Which style suits you? When we are choosing a bra that’ll make you look great, we need to consider what we’re working with. Different styles suit different bust shapes. Whether you are small, average or full busted, there is a bra that will accommodate your form. Keep an eye on your hooks. If a bra fits properly, you should be able to comfortably fasten it on the loosest hook. Then, as the bra adjusts to your body or begins to age, you can gradually work your way in. If you have to go straight to the tightest hook, that bra is not right for you. The bra should be low and tight on the back, with no riding up. If it rides up, the band is too big.

Using A Professional Photographer
A
Almost everyone has a personal camera on hand. Cell phones now have a 4-8 megapixel camera built in. So my question is this: are the cameras we carry able to capture those moments that we are not willing to leave to chance? You know, those images we will treasure the rest of our lives, which will be passed down to our children and then their children? The digital revolution has brought us amazing options. The hobbyist, professional and amateur all benefit from a sea of ever growing choices. However, these options do not always translate to images worthy of being printed and hung for many years to come. It takes a tremendous amount of skill, talent and effort to create a truly unique portrait worthy of displaying in your home or office. Custom photography is all about choice and experience, and finding someone who will photograph those special moments while devoting the personalized attention necessary and without the feeling of a crowded, “take a number” portrait studio. There are just a few complex components that go into capturing that special moment in time. Foremost, a properly trained professional photographer with a passion for his trade will have access to proper lighting equipment, a planned out
composition and feel for the image, many backdrop options, hi-tech computers and programs with professional editing features to ensure you always look your best. In order to provide a high level of service, a photographer must be able to spend an appropriate amount of time and skill making a portrait session amazing. Some requirements are the right mix of camera, lens, lights, and an understanding of what the final product will be. The product might be a metal print, canvas, mural or other medium of your choosing.
concerns and provide the photographer with an understanding of the goals you envision for your project. Lastly, as there are many freelancers out there, I believe there is added value and security with choosing a photographer that works either for a studio or has their own. This not only brings the added reassurance that you have a safe public environment to meet with your photographer, but it also means that they are growing their business and clientele. The ultimate goal of this article is to better explain the professional services that our business provides, which is to offer the best product we can. Your overall experience is the most important outcome to us as professionals. We want clients to enjoy the entire process from start to finish so that they can be a testimony to the reasons for using a professional photographer.
A good starting point when choosing a photographer is whether or not they belong to a reputable professional organization that promotes continuing education, training, and up to date certifications. Although this is no guarantee of a great experience, it is a good starting point to find out how serious someone is about their passion and profession. Ask as many questions as possible, as this will reassure you of your
exceptional experience. Our vision is to provide breathtaking images and videography. We offer a complete, up-to-date, creative studio that can take any project to fruition. You will find all graphic design needs, art direction, framing, printing, presentation, promotional and so much more, all under one roof and one name, INCPICS.
We are constantly learning new wave techniques, improving on our equipment, and coming up with innovative ideas to better serve you. We aim to form long-term relationships with each client and family. We invite you to visit our spacious facility at 1677 Springfield Avenue, Maplewood, New Jersey, and see why people leave feeling good and with smiles on their faces. We ensure a relaxed and comfortable studio atmosphere for our clients. Our standards are set very high, so that each individual session is truly an

Community andEducation By David Walker, Esq., M.S.W., Executive Director, Somerset Home for Temporarily Displaced Children David Walker became executive director of Somerset Home in May 2013. Before joining the agency, he served for 10 years as CEO of Morristown Neighborhood House Association, where he oversaw programs such as gang prevention, youth counseling, pre-schools and community outreach. He was also General Counsel for The Miracle Makers Inc., in Bedford Stuyvesant, Brooklyn, New York, and directed programs for children and families living with HIV/AIDS at Hope House of The Palm Beaches in Florida.
Building Futures, Building Hope
W
When there’s nowhere else to turn, Somerset Home gives homeless teens a home and a hopeful future. James doesn’t remember his mother. She died of a drug overdose when he was six. Relatives took him in, but when the little boy became a burden, he was sent to a series of foster homes. When he turned 18 and “aged out” of the child welfare system, he had nowhere to go, no support system and no skills or resources to live on his own. But unlike thousands of other traumatized teens in New Jersey, James was accepted in My Place, a residential transitional-living program run by Somerset Home for Temporarily Displaced Children. Counseling, part-time work and independent-living skills workshops have helped him heal and take the first steps toward independence. James is just one of the thousands of abused, neglected and homeless teens who have found a safe haven and support services in one of Somerset Home’s seven programs for teens and young adults. Opened in 1973, the Bridgewater, N.J., nonprofit has helped thousands of teens from around the state put the past behind them and begin to build a brighter future. A lot has changed in four decades. Somerset Home started with one house for 12 youth. Today it has multiple buildings for 41 teenagers and young adults. Its services have evolved as needs changed: an in-house school, HIV/ AIDS education, financial literacy workshops, a scholarship fund and permanent supportive-housing for young adults with nowhere to go…all designed to help residents heal emotionally and learn to live independently.
From the start, the agency has worked with local community groups and the N.J. Department of Children and Families to help teens deal with their difficult family situations, continue their education and learn the skills they need to move forward with their lives. Individual, group and family counseling provided by Somerset Home’s behavioral health department is a key component meeting the needs of clients and their families. One area in which the need is growing is street outreach. Funded by a federal grant, Somerset Home’s Street Smart outreach program began in 1998 and works with youth living on the street to find them safe housing and direct them to services for health care, counseling, education and jobs. Outreach workers also meet with school guidance counselors, police officers and other social service agencies to explain their services and ensure those who come in contact with teens living on the street or in other unsafe situations know Somerset Home’s outreach services are available.
or shelter in order to survive. Others fall victim to people they meet on the streets. These victims are ‘sold’ at truck stops, casinos, on internet sites and street corners. “We talk with them, offer blankets and toiletries, and over time build their trust and help get them to safety,” says Outreach Worker Tayeesha Ruff. Not everyone is ready to accept Somerset Home’s services, but for those who are, the result can be life-changing. As one client explained, “I had nowhere to go and no one to call. [The outreach workers] helped me when I needed it most and I will never forget them for what they did.” “For 40 years, Somerset Home has been giving homeless youth a home and a hopeful future,” says Executive Director David Walker. “And with the continued support of a caring community, we will be here for another 40 years to offer a safe haven to teens who have nowhere else to turn.”
In the past, outreach workers focused on Somerset County, but a grant from the N.J. Department of Children and Families have allowed them to expand into Essex, Bergen, Hudson, Middlesex, Morris and Union counties. The grant is part of the state’s effort to combat the growing problem of human trafficking. According to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, one in eight runaways were in danger of becoming sex trafficking victims sold into slavery by pimps, organized crime members, or their parents.
Street Outreach Worker Tayeesha Ruff talks with a teenage girl about options for finding a safe place to live. Somerset Home provides seven programs for adolescents and their families: Brahma House crisis intervention center; Passages, My Place and Whitney House transitional-living programs; Pathways independent-living skills program; Street Smart street outreach program; and Bridge House supportive-housing for homeless young adults. For more information about outreach and other Somerset Home services, visit www.somersethome.org.

I
I was lucky enough to grow up in a well educated, affluent family that had the ability to afford me every opportunity parents could want for their child. I went to a prestigious private school, participated in sports, and extracurricular activates. I had great friends and managed to stick to the principles my parents had brought me up to believe in such as hard work, honesty, Integrity, and self sufficiency, effectively keeping me out of harm’s way and trouble. When it was time to go to college, I was glad to go. I had been accepted to a prestigious school In Boston that I was excited about, and felt that it was time to stand on my own two feet and start carving my own way in the world. College accomplished for me what any realistic expectations could hope for: the ability to think analytically and express myself appropriately. However, the reason I chose my school, and the reason most people I know went to college, was not for these rather humble aspirations. I was career focused and wanted college to be my ticket into an amusement park of opportunity. What I found was my analytical mind saying, “You’ve got a $120,000 education. What now, hot shot?â€? Although I had a good experience at college, I wasn’t an academic at heart and knew that spending another $100,000 for post grad was not for me unless absolutely necessary. Of course it was time to get a job, but where? I started contacting all the advertising companies I had been studying over the past four years and managed to land a handful of interviews. It became quite clear that nobody was hiring, and that the whole industry was slow enough to grant interÂviews as a way of distracting themselves from the fact that they didn’t have enough work to do either. The offers I did get would have given “education investmentâ€? a return in about 6 years as long as I didn’t need to pay rent or eat. We all have to start somewhere, but I
refused to believe that my value to the proÂfessional world was within $5.00 of miniÂmum wage.

Cooking With Wine: A Healthier Choice
I
In this day and age, while everyone is either counting every calorie or just giving in to obesity, we all could use a way to make the foods we were raised to love a little bit healthier. Just making a few changes in the ingredients you choose can cut up to half the fat and calories out of your everyday diet without surrendering flavor. In most cases you will find that the dish will maintain its taste, while allowing peace of mind and a healthier diet. To begin, start with a simple switch from white to wheat bread. I resisted this at first but then came to realize how bread can actually taste good, rather than just being something to hold my sandwich together. Little things like this help more than you might realize. I realized that I could continue this non-diet by adding wine to many of my cooking recipes. Wine is a great fat substitute When you take some of the fat out of dishes, you usually need to add another ingredient to replace the lost moisture. Instead of sautéing veggies in heaps of butter or oil, you can sauté them in a smaller amount of oil plus some wine for flavor and moisture. Rather than making a marinade with cup of oil, decrease the oil to ¼ cup and add ¼ cup wine. I just made a garlic thyme butter sauce for some fresh cod and the recipe called for a ½ cup of butter. I simply used a ¼ cup of butter and added a ¼ cup sauvignon blanc. The results was even more flavorful than the original and made my Dietitian wife much happier. Only alcohol and water evaporated when cooking, so you’re left with the essence of the wine itself – namely polyphenols and anti-oxidants. Wine adds moisture and flavor to fish Deep-fried fish dipped in tartar
sauce, while being tasty, defeats the nutritional purpose of eating fish. A way to add flavor and moisture to fish without adding fat is to cook it with wine. Add wine to the pan while the fish is simmering or drizzle the fish with a tablespoon or two of wine and bake it while wrapped in a foil packages. Wine is great in marinades Wine is basically an acidic ingredient (which helps tenderize the outside of the meat), and it has a lot of flavor. A wine-based marinade helps keep meat, poultry, and seafood moist while it cooks as well. Wine can help cook and simmer foods. Add wine to dishes you’re cooking in a skillet on the stove, in a slow cooker, or in the oven. Simmered along with the food, it adds flavor and moisture to whatever dish you’re making. What type of wine should be used to cook which type of food?

might do well in a bold-flavored dish. Don’t be afraid to do your own thing but, generally, lightcolored meats such as chicken and fish are paired with light-colored meats such as chicken and fish are paired with light-colored wines (white), while dark-colored meats such as beef are paired with darkcolored wines (red). The basic job of red wine is to marinate, bringing out the food’s innate flavors. Reds are skilled at bringing out the colors and essence of the food, and they add dryness, making dishes taste less sugary. Similar to food/wine pairings, red wine should be added to dishes containing red meat, or dishes with a lot of vegetables, such as stews. While red wine enhances flavor, white wines alter it. This doesn’t mean that white wine will decrease the horrible taste of an already bad dish, but it will add an acidic feature, making the dish more tart. It won’t drastically change the dish, but it will enhance its natural sharpness. White wines are best used for cram sauces, or with chicken and fish. Feel free to experiment while cooking with wine. Get creative, and try to invent new flavor combinations. And, after you’ve created something spectacular, don’t forget to write down how you did it!
Keep in mind that wine needs to simmer with the food you’re cooking to enhance its flavor. Don’t add it at the end of cooking or you’ll risk serving a dish with a strong, overpowering flavor. The longer you cook the wine (over low to medium heat), the more subtle the flavors. There is fairly conclusive evidence that wine consumption can lead to many health benefits. There have been no studies about cooking with wine, but we can make some logical assumptions. Only alcohol and water evaporate when cooking, so you’re left with the essence of the wine itself – namely polyphenols and anti-oxidants. The best thing though is that cooking with wine is a great way to add a unique flavor to your cooking. Health benefits aside, food tastes great with it – and if nothing else, it’s healthy for the soul!
