Women Lead The Way By Linda Tarr-Whelan
Book Review
Y
Your Guide to Stepping Up to Leadership and Changing the World •
Offers practical steps for women to bring their passion, brains, and background to the power tables and make life better for themselves, their company or organization and global society.
•
Combines compelling research, international experience, and fascinating personal stories with solid advice
•
Tarr-Whelan has extensive background as a business woman, a government official, a nonprofit leader, and a nurse
A few “first women” are making key decisions in high places but a few is not enough to have a significant impact. Changing what gets decided takes changing who makes the decisions. But with just 17% of Congressional seats and 14% of Fortune 500 board seats held by women, the leaders defining priorities and solutions continue to look and act much the same as generations ago. Linda Tarr-Whelan marshals eye-opening facts and figures to decisively dispel the myths that still hold women back and shows women how to build their confidence and skills to pioneer a distinctive approach to leadership, one that emphasizes collaboration, communication, and consensus. The proven tipping point, surprisingly, is just 30%— when women’s representation at the top reaches 30%, real change starts to happen. Drawing on her extraordinarily diverse background as a consultant, organizer, and diplomat, TarrWhelan offers a women-led strategy for change and a complete set of practical road-tested tools readers can use to become powerful

Barretts Esophagus What is It? The esophagus is the muscular tube which extends from the mouth to the stomach. BE occurs when the normal cells which line the inside of the esophagus are replaced by a different cell type. The cells which normally line the esophagus are called squamous cells. These cells turn into intestinal-type cells in BE. Over time these cells can develop into precancerous cells and eventually esophageal cancer. Why is this important? The incidence of esopahgeal cancer in the general population is low. However, the risk increases by 30 fold or by 0.5% per year in people with BE. What Causes it? BE is directly related to acid refluxing from the stomach repeatedly into the esophagus. This is also known as GastoEsophageal Reflux Disease or GERD. Other Risk Factors There are other factors which also increase the risk of BE including older age, male gender, a white or hispanic background, and smoking.
Diagnosis BE itself causes no symptoms. It is often discovered during evaluation for the symptoms of acid reflux. If a person has longstanding heartburn they should undergo an endoscopic gastroduodenoscopy, or EGD. Prior to the examination medications are given through an IV for sedation and a thin tube with a built in camara is used to look into the esophagus and stomach. In BE the normal glossy pale lining of the esophagus changes to a salmon-pink color similar to the appearance of the stomach lining. These changes occur at the junction between the stomach and the esophagus and can extend up the esophagus towards the mouth. If these findings are present a small biopsy will be taken and viewed under a microscope to confirm the diagnosis. Both the classic endoscopic appearance and positive biopsies are needed to make the diagnosis of BE. Treatment If BE is diagnosed treatment involves lifestyle modifications, medications and surveillence
www.SomersetCountyWJ.com
endoscopy. Lifestyle modifications include avoiding food which promotes acid reflux (chocolate, high fat foods, alcohol, peppermint) and behavioral changes such as smoking cessation, raising the head of the bed at night, avoiding very large meals, and not eating close to bedtime. Antacids are prescribed to decrease the excessive amount of acid that refluxes into the esophagus. An EGD should be performed every 2 to 3 years with biopsies taken from the esophagus to look for the development of precancerous cells.
8
Summary At Hunterdon Gastoenterology Associates we have experience diagnosing and treating many people with both acid reflux and BE. Please contact us if you experience the symptoms of acid reflux such as heartburn, nausea, or indigestion, and especially if you experience trouble swallowing or painful swallowing. These symptoms should prompt an evaluation for the presence of acid reflux and acid reflux related disorders such as BE.

Fecal Incontinence
F
Fecal or anal incontinence is one devastating physical disability. It affects self-confidence and personal image, and can lead to social isolation. Minor incontinence, the most common form, is the inadvertent escape of flatus or partial soiling of undergarments with liquid stools. This condition is relatively common in women, although the incidence is underestimated, because patients are embarrassed to discuss their problem. The most important step in treatment and resolution is to talk about it. One needs to overcome the feelings of shame and social taboo related to this subject and open up to their physician.
“The most important step in treatment and resolution is to talk about it” The reasons are various and include obstetrical injury during vaginal delivery that may result in incontinence immediately or years later. Other risk factors are age greater than 40, menopause, multiple deliveries, urinary incontinence, diabetes, obesity, anal surgery, and spinal cord disease or injury. Occasionally, severe constipation may result in impaction of the stools in the rectum (stool reservoir) and liquid stools can leak around it.
problem; a small probe is inserted into the rectum, and measures different pressures as the patient strains, squeezes and rests. The rectal sensation and nerve function are also evaluated. Other radiology tests such as ultrasound and MRI may be useful in selected patients.
We offer: “Open Access Colonoscopy - Hassel Free. Easy Scheduling with NO preliminary consultation needed? Patient friendly atmosphere. Caring and attentive staff. Our award winning physicians offer the following procedures: Diagnostic & Therapeutic Upper Endoscopy & Colonoscopy Diagnostic & Therapeutic ERCP Virtual Colonoscopy Treatment of Liver Disease Bravo 48 Hour Wireless ph Monitoring Small Bowel Wireless Capsule Endoscopy H-pylori Breath Test Hemorrhoidal Banding Paracentesis Lactose Intolerance Breath Test Small Bowel Bacterial Overgrowth Testing Rectal & Esophageal Manometry Endoscopic Ultrasound Our patient satisfaction surveys are between 4.8 and 5.0 with 5.0 being the highest choice.
Treatment is different in each case, and depends on the causing factors and severity of the problem. One important modality is biofeedback therapy. It is a painless, noninvasive means of retraining the pelvic and abdominal muscles. Patients are guided to improve control of these muscles using an anal plug with electrodes and abdominal wall electrodes. Rectal sensation can be enhanced and coordination of the sensory and strength components of continence improved. Injectable material to tighten the anal area and stimulation of the nerves that control the muscles to the anus (thru a small implantable device) can be used in appropriate candidates. Surgery is reserved for major incontinence, especially in patients who had muscle injury during childbirth.
“Highest quality medicine with concierge level service”
In summary, anal incontinence is a common condition in women and the most important step in success of treatment is to talk about it. Help is available, the success rate is high and treatment restores confidence and a good quality of life.

Health andMedical By Joanne Price Joanne Price became ill in 1997, was diagnosed with Still’s Disease in 2007 and became disabled from work in 2008. Her search for help revealed a need in our area, so Joanne started The Autoimmune Support Group in 2009. Debilitated but never defeated, Joanne worked toward her bachelor’s degree one class at a time. In 2009, she graduated Summa Cum Laude from Kean University and was inducted into the Phi Kappa Phi National Honor’s Society. In 2013 she launched a website. Because Joanne’s husband is a disabled veteran, she has the unique perspective of both patient and caregiver, which is related through her weekly blog, “Living With Chronic Illness.” Presently in partial remission, Joanne aspires to grow the group to reach all those in need.
8 Steps To Improving Your Wellness 7.
L
Living with a chronic illness sometimes feels like you have no control over your life. “Wellness” begins to feel like a puzzle. Your medical team is probably the most important piece of the “wellness” puzzle, however, there are eight puzzle pieces that are well within your control. If each category improves your wellness by five percent, then working all eight of the plan could potentially improve your wellness by 40 percent! Now that’s life changing!
1.
Daily Meditation or prayer Set aside 15-20 minutes per day to sit alone in a quiet space. Get comfortable and close your eyes. Thoughts will come, but don’t pay them any attention; just be an “observer“. The goal is to get to the “gap”-- the space between the thoughts. The more you do it, the longer the “gaps” will become. It is there in the silence of “non-thought” that you can access “being”. If you are spiritual, you may come to define “being” as “Being”. If you are a non-believer, then you may define “being” as a verb, as in “just being“. In no time you will become a calmer, less anxious version of yourself. You will find you have more patience. Your blood pressure will go down. You may even be less prone to stress eating!
2.
Exercise Sufferers of chronic illness know that we must approach exercise with the utmost of care. It may be tempting to jump right in to a 15 minute walk, but a body coming out of a flare is very unpredictable. Don’t risk a relapse! Get your doctor’s approval before starting. Walking is usually best. Begin with only two minutes. Set a timer and stick to it! Each week add two minutes. For safety, take a friend and bring your cell phone, (which you will use to clock your
time half way out, then turn around and come back). The key is to return home before you become fatigued.
3.
Sleep Sleep is the most important area that you have control over. Chronically ill patients often have sleep disturbances. With poor quality sleep, your body compensates by sleeping longer. If debilitating fatigue is your number one complaint, you would benefit from seeing a doctor that specializes in sleep disturbances.
Work on Memory “Brain Fog” is high on the list of symptoms for autoimmune disease patients. While proper sleep and good nutrition affect memory, it makes sense to “work out” your brain. Games such as Sidoku and cross-word puzzles help, as does the on-line site www. lumosity.com.
8.
4.
Simple Pleasures Simple pleasures can not only lower your blood pressure but can immediately restore a sense of peace and calm. Pet owners know how quickly petting their cat or dog can change their mood and calm their nerves. Other simple pleasures are soaking in a warm bath, knitting, gardening and cuddling with a baby or loved one.
Therapy and Support Groups Chronic illness can trigger stages of grief. Therapy can help sort through the emotions that accompany this type of loss. Your therapist should understand the unpredictable nature of this illness and remain flexible. Some cutting edge therapists are offering appointments via Skype.
5.
Give Of Yourself Giving of your time and your energy is the quickest way to take the focus off of what is going on inside your own body. For some people, volunteering is life changing. It does not have to be a physical activity. Reading to the blind or feeding a stroke patient require almost no energy. Making a difference in someone else’s life will come back to you ten-fold!
Many patients find regular attendance in a support group comforting. Here you will make new friends who share this experience, get support and learn new coping skills.
Working on these eight categories can make a dramatic impact on your wellness. Take back the control! Testimonial “I have been attending The Autoimmune Support Group for four years. Joanne is a compassionate and dedicated Leader. This group is the one place I feel I can openly express myself and get the support from other group members. For me, it’s my “safe haven.” -D.P. Bridgewater, NJ
Autoimmune Group
Support for those coping with Chronic Illness

6.
Diet The Anti-inflammatory Diet is a common sense approach to eating which reduces inflammation in the body. It incorporates fruits, vegetables, lean meats and fish high in Omega Fatty Acids. “Good” Carbohydrates are allowed. The foods to avoid are refined sugars, white flour and processed foods. These foods cause inflammation.

Your Mindset Could Be Keeping You Fat
H
Have you been constantly on a diet yet you always stay around the same weight? Have you been trying to lose weight, but it keeps finding you again a couple months after you have stopped your diet? Have you tried every weight loss program in the world and have decided that none of them work? If you are reading this and nodding your head up and down or you know someone that falls into this category, then I have a new concept for you to consider. The problem with your weight loss may not be your diet program, but instead, your thoughts and feelings that are sabotaging you. Stressful situations or stressful decisions about your weight loss can derail your weight loss goals and success. In my 10 years of practice I have learned that if you don’t address the emotional side of weight loss, you will not be successful at losing weight. As humans, we are emotional beings and it doesn’t matter how much you are an expert about a particular subject, your decisions will often be affected by your emotional state of mind. So you could know every fact about healthy eating and exercise routines but the minute you get upset with a family member about something, the next thing you know you are on your second piece of chocolate cake. If you don’t recognize when your emotions are controlling your eating decisions, you will not be successful at losing weight or keeping it off. According to a survey conducted by the Consumer Reports National Research Center, over 1,300 licensed psychologists agree that any successful weight loss plan must take into consideration that
“understanding and managing the behaviors and emotions related to weight management is essential to weight loss.” So what are examples of these emotional behaviors they have identified? •
Emotions about making healthy food choices
•
Emotions related to maintaining a regular workout
•
Gaining self control over behaviors related to weight loss
•
Feeling guilty about poor behavioral choices that cause you to fall off your diet regimen
•
Emotions related to other stressful situations in your life
How in the world can you manage your emotional behaviors to create successful and sustainable weight loss? Simply put, you have to start with the right emotional attitude about your weight loss goals. In order to have sustainable weight loss (weight loss that you can keep off for a long period of time), you have to have realistic expectations for the amount of weight that you want to lose. Realistic expectation for weight loss is 1 – 2 pounds per week. Many of us want to lose too much weight too fast so that when we can’t lose 10 pounds in 10 days, we get emotionally frustrated and we give up.
stressful situations that occur in your life. Emotions are strong catalysts. When you feel stressed or emotional, your ability to make effective decisions regarding your weight loss program can become compromised. When you create strategies for how you will deal with common weight loss problems, before they happen, you are more likely to be successful with your weight loss goals. Having a plan allows you to execute your plan before the stressful situation arises. In my practice, I have created a protocol that includes strategies focused on education about proper eating behaviors, combined with education to deal with stressful situations related to your dietary plan as well as your life. Here are the key components that have created success for my patients. •
Goal-setting before we start the program
•
Record-keeping of successes and setbacks during the plan
•
Therapies to identify and address negative emotions that trigger unhealthy eating and
avoiding those triggers •
Detailed balanced whole food plan
•
What are the best times and amounts of food to eat daily
•
What is a realistic exercise regiment for your lifestyle
•
Finding solutions to setbacks and obstacles (before they arrive)
•
Mindfulness training to reduce judgment and self-punishment for bad behaviors
•
Motivational approaches to stay on track with goals
•
A supportive accountability partner to help keep focused
This effective combination of dietary planning, exercise regiments and mind-body strategies will help you to easily uncover the reason your emotions are sabotaging your weight loss plan. You will see and feel how much easier it is to be successful with your weight loss efforts when you think about your emotions as part of your treatment plan. For more information on how join Dr. Dae’s successful weight loss program visit her website www. HealthyDaes.org.
You also need to have a weight loss plan that includes some strategies geared to managing your emotions. The list falls into three categories. The first is preparation and planning to reduce negative emotions related to following your dietary program. Second, is learning strategies to implement during stressful moments in your life that can impact your diet plan. The third, and perhaps most important, is learning to deal with

A major issue facing an increased number of families is the responsibility of providing care for their elderly parents or relatives. The challenge becomes especially great for those who notice that their loved-one can no longer handle many of the normal day-to-day tasks of living. Due to increased forgetfulness and fragility, there becomes a concern about how a parent is managing their finances, medication, nutrition, personal hygiene, up keep of home or apartment etc. Their living alone is no longer possible and a decision needs to be made. Should Know
About Mammograms
information provided by Care First –Blue Cross BlueShield www.carefirst.com
Many women are afraid of mammograms but having one is definitely worthwhile. In fact, it can even save a woman’s life. If the test is normal, you will feel better knowing that you are OK. If however; there is a problem, it is better to know early. Regular mammograms can detect breast cancer BEFORE it spreads. Treatment works best when the cancer is found early. Make an appointment to see your Doctor for a mammogram if you fall under any of these categories that pose a higher risk: •
Your Mother OR sister has/had breast cancer
•
You have Jewish ancestors from Eastern Europe (A certain gene is carried among this group)
•
You had your first menstrual period before age 12
•
You NEVER had children OR you had your first child after age 30
•
You had radiation treatments to your chest area
•
You have a lump, nipple, discharge, breast pain or dimpling of skin on the breast
Breast cancer is NOT a death sentence when detected early. Detection at later stages may be managed with all the new technologies and treatment available. It is never too late to be evaluated and undergo treatment. There is life after the diagnosis. FACE YOUR FEAR and TAKE CHARGE!!
Starting at age 40 women should have a mammogram every 1 – 2 years. If you feel a lump, see or have questions about anything unusual in your breast contact your health care provider.
When should I have a mammogram?
How do I get ready for my mammogram? • Make the appointment for 1 week after your period, when the breasts are less sensitive. • Wear a shirt with shorts, pants or skirt. This makes easier to undress from the waist up.
it
• Do not wear deodorant, perfume, lotion or powder under arms or on your breasts on the day of your appointment. These products make shadows on the mammogram.

Robotic-Assisted Surgery For Gynecology
F
Fibroid Removal with Less Pain, Less Blood Loss and Faster Recovery with the Aid of a Robot Fibroids are an irregular firm mass located near the center of the pelvis. Fibroids are most often found during the pelvic exam portion of a routine annual exam. Some women have mild symptoms or no symptom, while others may experience disruptive to sever symptoms that cause them to schedule a non-routine visit to their OBGNY doctor. Symptoms of uterine Fibroids can include: heavy or prolonged menstrual periods, pelvic pain, pain during intercourse, frequent urination, abnormal bleeding
between periods, and low back pains. One of the more popular surgeries used by the robotic system is called a myomectomy, which is the removal of uterine fibroids.
less pain and blood loss and shorter hospital stays. The robot is also helpful when it comes to suturing. It enables us to sew things up inside the belly by using the robotic cams. For patients, the benefits are clear as well. Using the da Vinci robotic systems allows gynecologist to minimize abdominal incisions.
The da Vinci robot is now serving as a phenomenal tool for gynecologists to use in what is considered to be the more challenging surgical procedures. Not only is the robot safe and effective, but it is minimally invasive. Using the da Vinci Robot system allows the doctor to have better visualization, improved depth perception and better manipulation allowing for more accuracy with the surgery. This equates to a better operation. Using the da Vinci Robotic system allows a gynecologist to minimize abdominal incisions resulting in shorter recovery,
Gynecologists recommend the da Vinci because it allows patients to maximize their quality of life due to the speedy recovery. We believe that it is extremely rewarding to watch your patients go home the next day and return to regular activities within one to two weeks versus months. With the considering of having less postoperative pain, less recovery
time, blood loss reduction, fewer risks of postoperative complications such as infections and a shorter hospital stay, we encourage readers to consider discussing the robot as an option for gynecological surgery with Dr. Pemberton and the team at Artemis OB/GYN.
Dr. Pemberton uses the da Vinci Robot to perform the following procedures: • Complex removal of endometriosis • Hysterectomy • Myomectomy • Ovarian tumors

Wisdom & Wrinkles?
N
Not necessarily. You can keep the wisdom from your years of life experience AND look younger than your actual physical years. How? First, let’s start with the basics on wrinkle prevention. Wrinkle prevention needs to start in your 20’s. By the mid-30’s most women will start to show the first signs of aging. You may experience aging signs even earlier than 30, if you have not followed the 5 rules of wrinkle prevention:
Just the Facts…Please I know, you may be thinking: “This skincare product is just like the all the rest. How do I know it is going to work?” For that very reason, Nerium selected ST&T Research in San Francisco and their highly qualified pharmacologists, scientists and researchers to conduct an independent clinical study. ST&T randomly selected 35 study participants who had no knowledge of the product and conducted a 30-day test.
•
Avoid the sun and wear sunscreen.
•
Don’t smoke
•
Get adequate sleep.
•
Eat more fruits, vegetables and fish with essential fatty acids (omega 3).
•
Have a consistent skin care regimen.
Michael Scott, owner of ST&T, says NeriumAD shows promise in and out of the lab: “I’ve never seen anything like this before.” For most skincare product studies, Scott notes that his researchers are happy to see a 2 to 5 percent statistical improvement throughout a 30 to 40 day period. “In this night cream, we saw improvement from baseline in some women to 35, 45, 55 and even some 60 percent improvement in appearance in a short period of time, that’s significant” says Scott.
Most people have violated at some point in time one or more of the above rules. So what do you do if you find yourself in your mid 30’s, 40’s or older and you haven’t done all the right things. Can you reverse the bad habits of youth? Can you reverse the natural course of aging? Are there processes and products that work? The answer is YES. Just in the past few years, there has emerged a new “first of its kind” natural skin care product line utilizing the new patented extraction technology NBio-PL2 TM and the resulting new NAE-8® (Nerium Aloe Extract), see www.nerium skin.com for scientific details. The science is impressive but the results are what count. Personal testimonials with accompanying before and after pictures with Nerium are abundant. Email questions to be sent a link or video of real people with real results, or go to link directly at www.nerium.com/ClinicalTrials. aspx?ID=ovbarnes. So the answer to “Do wisdom and wrinkles have to come together?” is a resounding NO. You can have wisdom without the wrinkles. There is hope for everyday people that want to look younger and perhaps haven’t been quite as attentive to their skin care regimen in the past.
to offer improved appearance is the wisest way to go. Everything else is just junk food for the skin. Why haven’t I heard of NeriumAD before? If you haven’t heard about NeriumAD yet it is because the marketing of the product line started only two and a half years ago. It is just a matter of time before more will learn about this breakthrough anti-aging regimen. We have been reported on CBS LA news show and on the popular television show The View (to receive video links to these shows, email skincare404@ gmail.com). The success of our product is evident in the success of our company. In 2013, the NeriumAD International reached 100 million in sales. Customers that recommend to
Natural Products with Above and Beyond Quality Control Nerium Skincare controls the entire production process from plant seed to finished product. Glutensensitive consumers need to know NeriumAD is naturally gluten-free. In addition, the product is parabenfree, non-comedogenic, and crueltyfree. Something else that is missing as a main ingredient is water. Many beauty products use water as a main ingredient because it is cheap and it fills the bottle. Instead, NeriumAD boasts their NAE-8 extract (patent received in 2013) and proteins as their main ingredients, showing they are committed to a high-quality product. Protecting Your Rights And Your Children, When Facing Divorce
T
They say experience is the best teacher. I have been through a divorce, and now I am an attorney helping couples who are going through a divorce. So I understand both the emotional and the legal aspects of the painful process of divorce. While hardly an exhaustive catalogue of divorce do’s and don’ts, this list presents 7 key steps you must take when going through a divorce. If you follow these rules, the entire process will be easier. After writing this list, an eighth point occurred to me that is actually the most important consideration of all. I certainly found this insight truthful when going through my own divorce. Here it is, in short:
or your relationship with them, do you? Of course not!
With this consideration in mind, here are 7 Key Steps You Must Take to Protect Your Rights and Children: 1. Know the law and your rights as a divorcing spouse While you should not be greedy, there is no reason to give in to your spouse’s demands without knowing your rights. For example, do not move out of your house simply because your spouse demands it, or agree to a seemingly unfair settlement proposal without knowing if you have better options. Obtaining wise legal counsel to guide you through the divorce minefield is absolutely necessary to ensure that all of your rights are preserved.
Be Kind and Be Civil Divorce is a raw and painful process, and there is a tendency to grow angry, bitter, and vindictive. Avoid those toxic traps wherever possible. Do not inflict needless emotional pain on your spouse. Don’t become greedy and try to get more than what you’d award yourself as an impartial judge— since you may very well end up in front of one.
2. Know your rights as a parent As a parent, you have rights with respect to custody, visitation, and child support. Your relationship with your children and the material well-being of your children should not suffer because you failed to exercise your rights, and theirs. Obtaining competent legal counsel is essential to ensure that your relationship with your children is fully protected.
If you have children, you and your spouse will continue to be partners in the most important project of all: raising wonderful kids that you hope will become productive, contributing, emotionally healthy members of society. Don’t mess up their future with the emotions of your present. The painful emotions associated with your divorce will eventually pass. You do not want these transient problems to wreak permanent damage on your precious children,
3. Know your assets and your spouse’s assets In particular, keep a very careful budget. Divorce can be costly and complicated, and you want to ensure that when everything is over, you will be financially stable. Also, you and your spouse’s available assets will be key to determining child support and alimony. A clear and wellmaintained picture of both parties’ finances will make this process easier and more fair.

4. Know your debt and your spouse’s debt Cancel all joint credit card accounts or lines of credit. You will probably be jointly and severally liable for any charges made on these accounts. You do not want to be on the hook any debts racked up by your spouse. For similar reasons, you should also cancel all joint checking accounts. 5. Change your will If your spouse is a beneficiary in your will, this status will not necessarily change when you divorce. Consult a competent wills, trusts, and estates attorney to ensure that your will is revised to reflect your post-divorce wishes. You will also want to ensure that other important documents, such as life insurance policies, are appropriately amended. 6. Do not date until the divorce is finalized Dating during the divorce process can raise suspicions of adulterous

behavior and create unnecessary prejudice in the eyes of the judge. This is particularly true if you are cohabitating with someone other than your spouse. Even worse, it can make an already emotionally complicated situation even more difficult and confusing, particularly for children. 7. Decide what you want in an attorney Do you want someone who takes an impersonal, hands-off approach, or someone who is available for texts and calls at all hours of the day? Do you want a technocratic practitioner who has no direct experience with divorce, or someone who has been through the process, understands your heartache, and can represent a source of emotional support as well as legal counsel? For many people, having an attorney who understands the heartache, stress, and frustration of divorce is an invaluable asset when going through the process.

In addition to being enthusiastic about her craft, Tiffany also shares her love of art with her daughter, Amira Jael.
Why Editing Is Critical To Your Business
N
No matter how good your writing skills are – no one can write a perfect draft on the first try. You’ll edit and re-edit a communication many times before you feel that it gets your message across. Many make the mistake of thinking there isn’t enough time or that it isn’t truly necessary to take this step for a particular communication. It is always a good practice to hire a third party to review your work, or to simply take a break from the text for at least 24 hours. It’s difficult to edit or proofread text that you’ve just finished writing because it’s still fresh and you’ll tend to miss errors. When you have a look at the prior days’ work with fresh eyes, you’ll be amazed. Although many people use the terms interchangeably, editing and proofreading are two different stages of the revision process. Both demand close and careful reading, but they focus on different aspects of the writing and employ different techniques. Editing is the process of preparing written material for publication through correction, condensation, organization, and other modifications to produce a correct, consistent, accurate, and complete work. Proofreading is reading written material to detect, mark and correct errors in spelling, punctuation and grammar. It’s the final step in the editing process. Here are five reasons why following a good editing/ proofreading process is critical to your business: Tells you if the content is too technical or if it doesn’t make sense, at least to the general public. It’s easy to get into the mechanics of a topic you’re very knowledgeable about, but jargon or technical terms can make readers work unnecessarily hard to get the point. Although you may find it necessary to use some of the important terms in your field,
1.
don’t throw them in just to sound scholarly. Always take into account that your audience may be learning about this topic for the first time.
2.
Helps to condense and improve the efficiency of your writing. When your goal is to make a lasting impression, a good edit will eliminate wordiness, yielding a more impactful message. Great writing is concise. In a perfect document your sentences will have no unnecessary words and your paragraphs will have no unnecessary sentences. Your readers will appreciate getting the information they’re looking for quickly and easily.
Developing quality materials for your prospective clients and partners can give you a competitive edge. It doesn’t matter if you’re established in your business or just starting up, you want to secure your reputation as a “perfectionist” when it comes to your business communication. The editing
3.
To ensure clarity of the ideas you’re trying to convey. An editor can be your sounding board, to serve as the eye and ear of the reader. You need an objective review to point out areas of your writing that require further explanation. The editing process also questions your flow of thoughts, if necessary, to make sure your logic is sound.
and/or proofreading process is essential to making an exceptional impression every time. The best person to edit your work is someone who doesn’t work at your company or even in your industry. You want the focus to rest on nothing more than the content in your article.
Your ideas. Refined. Refinished. Your words. Restated. Renewed. What’s your specialty: Sales, Accounting, Photography, Interior Design? In that case, allow us to take care of your editing and proofreading.
Let us polish your great ideas one word at a time.
Are you a talented person who speaks well and has great ideas, but your writing leaves a little more to be desired? Is your writing great, but needs a second set of eyes to catch the potential “glitches”?
Our editing services can help you prepare copy that addresses the needs and concerns of your target audience in language it understands. We’ll aim to maintain your tone and style by working with your words so your authentic, personal touch will remain intact.
4.
Presents alternative perspectives by asking questions that you might not have considered. Editors can bring a viewpoint that didn’t arise spontaneously for the author. This feedback can be built upon for the existing document or to create new content for a separate communication.
If your documents, e-magazines, newsletters, web copy or articles, etc. are in need a bit of polish, contact us. We’ll catch any “typos”, punctuation, grammar and capitalization errors.
5.
To ensure that even the smallest errors are caught. You’ve worked really hard to establish your business as a competent and professional organization. So get noticed for your great ideas, not your mistakes. Even if your document has met the mark from an editing perspective, always have it proofread. A simple error in sentence structure, grammar or the misuse of a word could cost you.

We offer our fast, cost-effective services to all. Businesses, individuals (personal documents) and students are welcome.

What Is Acupuncture?
C
Chinese Acupuncture is 4,000 – 5,000 years old. It is the insertion of needles just under the skin. The needles are only as thick as three or four pieces of hair. Most people find acupuncture to be very relaxing and that it does not hurt. It can remove negative emotions, addictions, stress, body soreness or pain, and almost any disorder or problem that upsets the vitality in the body. What is the process for acupuncture? When you come in for your first treatment, you will have to fill out several health forms. Michael will then go over them with you so he will know what to treat you for. He will most likely be treating you for several ailments at a time. You will be given a gown to put on and the treatment will start on the back of your body. The needles will be inserted into various acupuncture points, which are helpful to your specific needs. You will then relax for about twenty minutes while enjoying soothing music. The process will then be repeated on the front of your body. What can it help? Acupuncture can be a very helpful treatment for many health conditions including allergies, pain, disease, arthritis, and addictions,
just to name a few. Most illnesses do have symptomatic treatments or recipes of points, which can make disease symptoms better. Acupuncture is treating the whole person to a deeper level so that not only do the symptoms go away but also the subtle causes of theses symptoms. Most patients who have acupuncture treatments steadily get better with no ill side effects. Acupuncture is also a great treatment for people with negative emotions, problems with anger and grief. There are certain treatments for many emotional states including fears and phobias. Many people claim that their stress level drops and they sleep better after only a few treatments. How does it work? Let’s use an example to explain the process. A person with Asthma may experience shortness of breath, lung mucus, inability to breathe and chest tightness. They may take Western medicine and get better. Acupuncture does not interfere with medicines. However, the patient has a sense that something is wrong with their lungs and that their lungs are weak. To an acupuncturist each organ has a unique pulse found on the wrist, usually with Asthma the lung pulse is quite weak. Treatment will involve
www.SomersetCountyWJ.com
acupuncture points, which open the lungs and strengthen the life force of the lungs. This process should be done weekly until the lung pulse again becomes strong. After the lungs strengthen the patient will only need occasional maintenance treatments. Weight Loss and Acupuncture Acupuncture uses tiny needles to stimulate the flow of Chi or vital energy. Sometimes the body holds in too much heat, which can slow down our metabolism. Acupuncture can help release that heat, helping our bodies to function healthier and shed unwanted pounds. Special spots on the body or acupuncture points are used to help curb food cravings. Acupuncture is also very healing for all conditions of the stomach and digestive track. There are also points that provide a bit of improvement in mood and well being that would be good for people struggling with weight issues, or who eat

to make themselves feel better. Acupuncture can help with bloating, binge eating, cravings, digestive problems, emotional problems, and that “too full feeling” we sometimes get after eating. Our bodies are like an orchestra; if one instrument is out of tune it throws off the entire arrangement. Our center offers valuable resources to fine tune your body by using holistic therapies to direct your body in a way that it can perform and play in harmony without the use of drugs or surgery. Preventative Health can help us to discover ways to nurture and heal our daily aches and pains. It can help us bring about physical and emotional changes, creating a feeling of wholeness in a way that makes a connection to our mind, body and spirit. A Mutually Beneficial Career Mentoring - Partnership
N
Navigating through a career transition can, at times, feel overwhelming, stressful and isolating. Fortunately, it doesn’t have to be. Mentoring can help individuals develop the academic, social and emotional skills necessary to succeed in the workplace and life. Volunteers who dedicate a few hours a week of their time as mentors are also gratified by making a significant impact in someone’s life. Why is a mentor so important when going through a career transition? A mentor helps guide a person through the process of reaching his or her professional goals. As someone who brings a different perspective, a mentor can point out professional strengths and weaknesses. A mentor also offers encouragement, validation and a listening ear. With a mentor, one has access to a valuable resource of professional wisdom, experience and connections.
feedback. Mentors should be compassionate and willing to take on the time commitment needed to help mentees reach their professional goals. What does the mentor get out of the experience? Mentors develop new skills, learn about themselves, grow as individuals and make a lasting and positive contribution to the community. By providing guidance to help a person succeed professionally, mentors also witness firsthand the difference they are making in someone’s life. Mentors typically develop deep and meaningful relationships with their mentees that last long after goals are met. United Way of Northern New Jersey
provides Council members with a free mentor training program. Through the United Way Mentor Center, those seeking to become mentors can take a free, 12-hour course to learn the fundamental skills of being a good mentor. Jimmy Bears Custom Wood Carvings
For over four years Mahwah, New Jersey resident Jim Stafford has been passionately pursuing the art of wood carving. Jim was introduced to carving by a tenant at his commercial property about 20 years ago. At the time he didn’t think he had the aptitude for it. Then, out of boredom years later, Jim was inspired by a tree that had been cut down on his property. After a few carvings, both bears, he was totally drawn in. What started as a hobby has become an obsession for Jim. He transforms tree trunks into whimsical wood carvings of animals. Most of his creations are bears, but Jim has also carved turtles, pigs, eagles and mushrooms. Jim owned a tire business in his twenties, but sold it after the death of his sister to spend time traveling. By age 27, Jim was living the country club life. He still plays golf just about every day. A potter for over twenty years, Jim is no stranger to expressing himself artistically. He finds making pottery to be a great release, but refers to the wood carving as, “having fun.” After gaining a comfort level with using the chainsaw as his tool of choice the rest of the process came naturally. He begins by using the chainsaw to remove large portions of the pine to form the snout, ears, arms, legs and the body of each bear. The top of the saw is used to create the textural effect of the bears’ fur. He then uses a grinder to fine tune the details of the carvings. A drill is used to attach the eyes, the carving is torched to add color and then a protective coating of polyurethane is added as the final step. Although Jim has been carving for over 4 years now, he attributes his early success to pouring himself into something he truly loves. “If you jump into something you love, and you really love it you’ll improve quickly.” There are times when he makes the cuts that weren’t intended, but with a few tweaks here and there and he’s back on track. Jim finds creating his carvings to be quite relaxing. The aroma of the fresh pine and the purr of the saw add to the appeal. “This has changed my life for the better.” There’s been one perk of wood carving that he did not consider. Wielding a 20 pound chainsaw several times a week has proven to be quite the workout. Jim’s physique has slimmed considerably. Jim believes that he receives the payoff to his efforts when people slow down as they drive by and are amazed by his creations. He’s amazed too, pointing to one of his bears, Jim said, “I can’t believe I made that.” For more information call 201 661 0677.

Community andEducation Raritan Valley Community College Highly regarded for its academic rigor, Raritan Valley Community College (RVCC) offers more than 90 associate degree programs and certificates to approximately 8,200 full-time and part-time students, including traditional college-age students as well as adult learners attending college for the first time or seeking retraining. The College provides numerous opportunities for students to build leadership skills that help them to attain educational and professional success. The Student Government Association and RVCC’s honor societies, as well as assorted student clubs and Service Learning activities, support initiatives that not only help students to develop their academic skills, but also to cultivate their sense of civic responsibility and commitment to their community. These experiences foster leadership skills and teamwork and promote effective presentation skills, all outcomes that employers deem as critical as the mastery of academic coursework. The article below illustrates the opportunities Raritan Valley Community College provides its students to prepare them for success in their professional and personal lives.
The Evolution of a Leader
I
I believe courage, perseverance and passion lead to success. These qualities are especially important when encountering challenges and obstacles. I know firsthand.
Courage and Passion
On October 6, 2010, I became unemployed, and on that very day, I made the decision to return to school and further my education. I had put off my dream of attending college for 29 years and knew now was my time. As a non-traditional student, I arrived at Raritan Valley Community College (RVCC) with great trepidation. I had to face my greatest challenge: the fear of failure. I feared competing with the traditional students, of mastering new technology, and so much more. But I discovered a reservoir of courage within me to embrace the challenges. With incredible support from my professors, the Office of Student Life and the Academic Support Center, I conquered my fear and embarked on an extraordinary journey that has led to achievements I never dreamed possible.
maintained a 4.0 GPA for four semesters. With plans to graduate in May 2014, I received invitations to apply to three Ivy League schools: Columbia University, University of Pennsylvania and Cornell University, as well as top tier schools including Drexel University, St John’s University and Stevens Institute. I’ve been accepted at seven universities including Rider University, Seton Hall University, Fairleigh Dickinson University and Drew University, and all have offered scholarships to continue my education.
Perseverance
Perseverance explains how I managed to keep up my grades while serving in a leadership position, participating in a mentor program, having an internship and completing service learning hours. I have made many sacrifices while attending school…studying long hours, completing homework assignments and projects, balancing family life and limiting
my social activities. Fortunately, my hard work paid off.
Pay It Forward
As a student leader, I now urge students to use all of the services that RVCC has to offer to enhance their college experience: to network with classmates and develop new friendships by joining clubs, serving as a mentor or becoming a club officer. I encourage students to seek out a financial advisor to overcome the barrier of financial difficulties; to use RVCC’s tutoring services in the Academic Support Center; and to meet with their academic advisor and create an academic plan, so they can complete their degree/certification and transfer to a four-year institution or enter the workforce upon graduation. Perhaps the most gratifying measure of success has been the impact I have had on others. Several students have shared with me that I have served as a role model and inspired them to change their lives. One became

Another student who assisted in the TD Bank Student Leadership Development Series was inspired to run for the VP of Leadership and Service for 2014-15 academic school year. I am proud of the legacy I have left behind and look forward to embrace new challenges that lie ahead, armed with courage, perseverance and passion.

goal in mind, to help families in need. After the 1st Annual Youth Explosion Talent Show in October 2012, the board members of FORNJ approached a mother of two wheel-chair bound sons living with cerebral palsy to see if she needed any assistance. In 2013, after interviewing the single mother, it was obvious that she struggled with consistent and competent assistance in order to fulfill the day-to-day needs for the physical care of her sons. After the FORNJ board discussed those needs, the organization was able to help her access the numerous resources she did not know were available to her. This is what FORNJ is all about.

The Effects Of Art On Child Development
I
It has been proven that early exposure to visual art, music, or drama promotes activity in the young developing brain. Art allows children to be innovative as they engage in a process that aids in the development of self-esteem, self-discipline, cooperation and selfmotivation. Ten reasons why art is so important in child development: 1. Art teaches children to make good judgments about qualitative relationships because in art judgment prevails over rules. 2. Art teaches children that problems can have more than one solution and that questions can have more than one answer. 3. Art teaches that there are many ways to see and interpret the world. Multicultural perspectives are celebrated through art. 4. Art teaches that the limits of our language do not define the limits of our cognition. In art we are not defined by our words but by our unlimited images of expression. 5. Art teaches children that there are huge effects with minimal changes. 6. Art teaches children to think through and within a material. Art employs some means in which the images come to life. 7. Art allows children to express feelings and emotions that can be spoken through words. 8. Art enables children to have experiences they can have from no other source and through such experiences to discover the range and variety of what they are capable of feeling. 9. Art helps children understand other school subjects much more clearly – from math and science to language arts and geography. 10. Art teaches children a willingness to surrender to the
unanticipated possibilities of the artwork as it unfolds in front of them.
Youth Art Month exhibits and programs attract hundreds of families each March.
One of the most important lessons you can teach your children is that more often than not, a mistake is not a mistake—it’s a happy accident. This lesson is best demonstrated through the arts.
Art Outreach Programs The Center has identified specific needs that it is uniquely qualified to fill, and developed compelling programs to serve them, with a goal of providing an outlet for creative expression in a safe, supportive setting.
Art Education The Center for Contemporary Art, Bedminster offers a full range of multi-level studio classes and workshops taught by professional teaching artists year-round in a variety of media for all ages, levels of experience and ability, and an active visiting artist program that attracts professional artists. Classes are offered year-round in oil, acrylic and watercolor painting, drawing, photography, pastels and ceramics. A Wine Rivalry: California Vs. Oregon
R
Rivalries are a guarantee. There always have been and always will be bitter rivalries throughout any situation when one product declares itself “The Best.” Our free market system thrives on the competition created through demand. Every good product has its rival. Whether it be with your favorite sports team’s arch rival or Pepsi vs. Coke, the competition continually gets better and better. It grows into its own and becomes itself. The rivalry becomes bigger and more important than the product. The Duke vs. UNC game is important, but the overall history of the events and moments are what is remembered. California and Oregon have created a rivalry of their own over the topic of Pinot Noir. A once super-power of all American wine-making, California has never been doubted for possessing the best of the best. That was until Oregon started taking some of the spotlight. What is the difference? Is it the taste? Should I always buy an Oregon or a California Pinot Noir?
California’s. They tend to obtain more earthy aromas and subtle fruit flavors. Oregon contains one of the most famous Pinot Noir growing areas in the United States. Willamette Valley was found to have the perfect climate for the production of this fickle grape. The Valley is sub-divided, based on climate, soil and elevation, into six different appellations. They are the Ribbon Ridge, Eola-Amity Hills, McMinnville, Yamhill-Carlton District, Chehalem Mountains and the Dundee Hills. The main difference between this area and its counterpart in California is that it is significantly cooler for a longer part of each year. The soil and climate most similar to those is Burgundy, which is where the grape is originally from and has been cultivated for more than a thousand years.
California Pinot Noir California’s Pinot Noirs are going to be more full-bodied and fruit forward than Oregon’s. The flavors and aromas of juicy red fruits will definitely stand out much more boldly. This is in reaction to its warmer climate. Originally, back in the 1940’s, most Pinot Noir grapes were planted in California’s Napa Valley. It took about 30 more years of education about what the grape actually needs to thrive for Cali to move most of its Pinot Noir production to the coast. The Sonoma Coast, for example, enjoy a much more favorable climate of warm afternoons and cool evenings with the moderating factor of cooling winds off of the Pacific Ocean. The farther you move inland, the grapes get more sheltered from the breeze, resulting in a hotter and more
continental climate. The best results for Pinot Noir in California have been in the Russian River Valley and Carneros region. I believe it is like all wines — it comes down to preference. Those who prefer California wines, by and large, like bigger fruit wines. They want those slap-you-in-theface-with-a-bunch-of-grapes reds. Those that prefer Oregon wines want more complexity and less in-your-face fruit. One isn’t better than the other, just different, but a difference that makes for a fun rivalry. For me, it depends on my mood and what I may be eating. I will usually lean toward the Oregon Pinot Noir if I had to choose. Saying all of this, nothing will stop me from getting a Napa Cabernet. Why that is, I will leave it for another day. Enjoy and salute.
As with all good rivalries, good cases can be made for both. It depends on a variety of different factors. Pinot Noir is a very temperamental grape. There are many subtle variations in the climate, how the wine is fermented, and what kind of influence the winemaker creates. I believe they both produce great wines. Choosing between the two as the matter-of-fact “better” region for producing Pinot Noir would be unwise and almost childish. It eventually comes down to an individual’s personal preference. Saying that, there are some general differences between the two. Take these guidelines to heart if you can’t decide which to purchase. Oregon Pinot Noir Oregon’s Pinot Noirs are typically lighter and more complex than

College Graduates Unemployed! Now What?
Business andFinancial
You just joined the ranks of 4.5 Million recent college graduates that now realize they don’t have a job in their chosen area of professional study, and if you do have a job, you are most likely receiving 30% of the pay you thought you would be earning. We have the answer. Do you want to make $100,000 plus this next year in your county - in your state? By Luke Kennedy
By Luke Kennedy
Bypassing The Corporate Ladder
I
I was lucky enough to grow up in a well educated, affluent family that had the ability to afford me every opportunity parents could want for their child. I went to a prestigious private school, participated in sports, and extracurricular activates. I had great friends and managed to stick to the principles my parents had brought me up to believe in, such as; hard work, honesty, integrity, and self sufficiency - effectively keeping me out of harm’s way. When it was time to go to college, I was happy to go. I had been accepted into a prestigious school in Boston that I was excited about, and felt that it was time to stand on my own two feet and start carving my own way in the world. College accomplished for me what any realistic expectations could hope for: The ability to think analytically and express myself appropriately. However, the reason I chose my school, and the reason most people I know went to college, was not for these rather humble aspirations. I was career focused and wanted college to be my ticket into a world of opportunity. What I found was my analytical mind saying, “You have got a $120,000 education. What now, hot shot? Although I had a good experience at college, I was not an academic at heart and knew that spending another $100,000 for post grad was not for me unless absolutely necessary. Of course it was time to get a job, but where? I started contacting all the advertising companies I had been studying over the past four years and managed to land a handful of interviews. It became quite clear that nobody was hiring, and that the whole industry was slow enough to grant interviews as a way of distracting themselves from the fact that they didn’t’t have enough work to do either. The offers I did get would have given “education investment a return in about 6 years as long as I didn’t’t need to pay rent or eat. We all have to start somewhere, but I refused to believe that my value to the professional world was within $5.00 of minimum wage, after I had just spent over $120,000.00 for a great education. “Sometimes it’s not what you know, but who you know, and that was certainly

We all have had our trials and tribulations throughout our lives. It is how we react to these obstacles that give birth to our new desires. For example, if you do not feel well, it would only be natural for you to desire health. While desire motivates you to a new achievement, longevity and focus is what determines if you get there or not. This is evident everywhere we look, no matter what the goal is or what you wish to achieve. Any new goal will require a life style change and a commitment to it. That being said, there are always definite ways to maximize your efforts. In a world of instant gratification, it has become almost instinctual that we wish to see the fruits of our labors instantly. When we do not, we usually become discouraged and give up immediately. This is especially predominant with health and fitness goals. Many of us have hoped, prayed and tried everything imaginable to have that ideal body, only to fail. One major reason for this failure is the fact that there is, nor ever will be, a one size fits all, or even one size fits many as far as the human body is concerned. There are thousands of variables inside a sea of unlimited possible
life experiences, all of which will have drastic effects on your fitness efforts. In order to push yourself in the right direction, you need to know alot about your body. Your strengths, your weaknesses, things you can do and things you shouldn’t do. An honest assessment is needed, and very few are qualified to do such a thing. If you had a collapsed roof, you would hire a well qualified, reputable and accredited roofer to fix it. Your roofer would come to your home evaluate the situation, perform the job and the result would be a leak-proof roof for your efforts. This is exactly why when, improving any given body, it would be best to hire a professional, because of their vast fitness knowledge, uncanny understanding of the human body and a never yielding commitment to the client. One way to ensure you’re getting a well qualified, reputable and accredited trainer is to consider the assistance of a Master Personal Trainer.
faster than a normal personal trainer. This can make your 3 months of workouts as effective as an entire year of old fashioned training. A master personal trainer takes the latest kinesthetic, medical and exercise physiological information and applies this to your specific body. This means you will see dramatic results in 30 days and a complete body overhaul in 90. It is very motivating to see results so fast; also master trainers can rehab any injury in conjunction with these goals. What can be
Typically, a master personal trainer can get you results that are 5 times
more motivating than looking and feeling your best in a few short months? Most Master Personal Trainers will offer you a free trial session so you can experience the difference between them and an ordinary trainer. Words cannot do justice of how life changing this service is for people. At the very least, you have a fitness guru for an hour to give you free advice and guidance. You have nothing to lose, so contact your local Master Trainer today.

I saw immediate, direct results in my business! The Women’s Journal reaches my target audience and because it is so informative to perspective clients, they follow through and I get the sale. I have the bottom line to prove it! Thank you so much...” - Melisa Ferriola, Lasting Looks “I have worked with the Women’s Journal in two separate areas of my career.
