Welcome to the 23rd Annual Indianapolis LGBT Film Festival! We are thrilled to have you! As we prepared for the festival, a common theme emerged in entries we received. Family, or the concept of chosen family, has been a prominent thread throughout. Centerpiece films like Our Son and The Mattachine Family highlight the idea that we can find love, support, and acceptance in the bonds we form with those who share similar values and beliefs. These bonds can often be as strong, if not stronger, than those we are born into. This theme is an undercurrent in many of this year’s features and short films. We hope this resonates with you as much as it did with all of us. This year, we present 53 films from 20 countries, each with distinctive and genuine narrative. As you explore the various themes and stories we have selected for you, rest assured that we are staying true to our promise of showcasing the art of marginalized and underrepresented LGBTQIA+ artists. Additionally, we are excited to welcome our friends from The Kinsey Institute, who will be co-hosting our closing feature Hidden Master: The Legacy of George Platt Lynes. Kinsey curator Rebecca Fasman and Newfields curators Robin Cooper and Anne Young are featured in this captivating documentary and will participate in a panel discussion following the screening. Once again we present the festival as a hybrid event, featuring in-person screenings followed by a week of digital streaming. We are thrilled to return to our live event home, Kan-Kan Cinema and Brasserie on the near eastside of Indianapolis. We're grateful that we can share this movie-going experience with our film-loving community. Let's remember the benefactor of our proceeds: Indiana Youth Group, best known as IYG. It remains the longest-running LGBTQ youth organization in the entire country. For more than 30 years, IYG has provided safe spaces and vital support for thousands of LGBTQ youth in our state. To learn more about this critically important organization and why we are honored to continue to support it, visit IndianaYouthGroup.org. So, grab your popcorn, open your hearts, and prepare to be moved, entertained, and inspired by the stories of love, resilience, and connection that await you at the 23rd Annual Indianapolis LGBT Film Festival. Thank you for joining us on this cinematic journey!

In this visually stunning new jukebox musical, set to the Grammy Award-winning music of Indigo Girls, two aspiring entertainers find themselves entangled in a world where dreams and challenges collide.

Ride along on a surreal, glittery musical romance, all set to the hits of the iconic, Grammy Award-winning Indigo Girls. Their relationship is put to the test as they deal with trying to make it in the music biz, their mothers (Ming-Na Wen and Missi Pyle), and finding what feeds each of their souls and dreams. Filmed in Mexico City, director Tom Gustafson (Were the World Mine) mixes in a variety of visually creative performances throughout Glitter & Doom. Comedy / Drama

The Mattachine Family This nuanced, gentle, and ultimately heartfelt dramedy explores the notion of connection through the experiences of a loving gay couple who discover they have differing ideas about what makes a family. The Mattachine Family finds a fiercely in love gay couple, photographer Thomas (Nico Tortorella, The Walking Dead: World Beyond) and actor Oscar (Juan Pablo Di Pace, Mamma Mia!), maintaining their relationship through steadily remaining fiercely in love through geographical setbacks, after their foster son returns to live with his birth mother. Just as Oscar's acting career begins to rise, Thomas enters something of a pre-midlife existential crisis. As the couple begins to have differing views and desires around what a potential family looks like together moving forward, Thomas leans heavily on a close-knit core of friends for comfort and meaning through it all.

Drama

Wild Fire Exploring love, lust, and loyalty through the lens of three couples of various sexualities, Wild Fire challenges traditional ideas of desire and commitment as seven acquaintances shine a light on the frightening truths, lies, and secrets in their closest relationships. After a party, seven acquaintances gather around a crackling fire. Each character arrives at a critical juncture in their lives, unaware that the night ahead will force them to confront issues they have long been avoiding. The group is drawn into an unyielding game of Truth or Dare. As the game accelerates, the exemplary couple opens up about what they’re going through—that they’re not as perfect as they seem. This sets the stage for the rest of the group to open up about their lives, unspoken desires, and secrets. The following morning, back in their bedrooms, each couple must choose a path. Will they integrate their newly exposed truth or choose to act as if nothing has changed? Wild Fire is the scintillating directorial debut of Jennifer Cooney (who also wrote, produced, and edited the film), with an engaging, talented cast whose character-driven stories of inner demons and the courage it takes to transcend them will stick with you

Comedy / Drama

Big Boys A unique blend of comedy and heartfelt drama, Big Boys challenges conventional stereotypes around body image and the sweet awkwardness of your first unrequited adolescent crush. An achingly brilliant queer coming-of-age classic. Endearing teenager Jamie can barely contain his excitement for a camping getaway with his cousins. His peppy innocence may clash with the tiresome swagger of his brother Will, but he's intent on spending as much time as possible with his favorite cousin Allie. Jamie's carefully-planned agenda of games, stories, and Ina Garten-approved cookout recipes falls apart, however, when Allie unexpectedly shows up with her new boyfriend Dan. Not only does Jamie have to compete with Dan for Allie's attention, but Dan is — like Jamie — a big boy. And when Jamie begins to have romantically-charged daydreams about Dan, it's clear that he might just be developing a thing for big boys. The film's strength lies in its nuanced portrayal of queer adolescence, focusing on Jamie's internal struggles and his journey towards self-acceptance. Co-starring

USA, 2023 88 Minutes

Emily Deschanel (Bones), Taj Cross (PEN15), and Dora Madison (Friday Night Lights), this endlessly charming film is always on Jamie’s side, and with Isaac Krasner’s incredible breakthrough performance, so is the audience.

Drama

Our Son Nicky (Luke Evans) lives with his husband Gabriel (Billy Porter) and their eight-year-old son, Owen. When Gabriel files for divorce, a custody battle forces both of them to confront the changing reality of their love for each other and for their son. It’s a tale as old as time: fall in love, get married, have a baby, live happily ever after? For Nicky and Gabriel, there’s an alternate ending to the 13 years they’ve spent together. Unhappy with not only his relationship but his place in the world, the only thing Gabriel is sure of is his devotion to the son he raised with Nicky. For Nicky, the news that Gabriel wants to get divorced comes as a shocking blow, forcing him to reevaluate other aspects of his life he thought he had a handle on. Like a gay Kramer vs. Kramer or A Separation, this affecting film from director Bill Oliver traces Nicky and Gabriel’s individual paths in dealing with mutual friends,

Documentary

Hidden Master: The Legacy of George Platt Lynes Hidden Master features a stunning collection of photography from the 1930s-50s, uncovering the life of Lynes less known: his gifted eye for the male form, his long-term friendships with Gertrude Stein and Alfred Kinsey, and his lasting influence as one of the first openly gay American artists. Photographer George Platt Lynes achieved renown during his lifetime for his innovative celebrity portraits and striking fashion photography. However, his best work and greatest passion was for the explicit male nudes he made of his lovers, friends, colleagues, dancers, models — and any other handsome man he could

Drama

Lie with Me The sensual yearning of Philippe Besson’s award-winning novel Lie with Me is writ large in director Olivier Peyon’s achingly tender adaptation. When celebrated author Stéphane reluctantly returns to his rural French hometown to accept an award, he’s forced to confront skeletons left in the closet decades ago. Upon agreeing to be the brand ambassador for a famous cognac celebrating its bicentennial, novelist Stéphane Belcourt returns to his hometown for the first time in many years. There’s something familiar about his ostensible tour guide, Lucas (Victor Belmondo, grandson of French acting legend Jean-Paul), something that stirs his memories of his first teenage love, Thomas (Julien de Saint Jean). With its bucolic rural European setting and parallel narratives set in the author’s youth as well as today, Peyon’s film combines the passion of Call Me by Your Name with a Proustian reflective wistfulness. However, Lie with Me stands on its own, a miraculous feat of adaptation with an uncommon understanding of queer sex and desire in both the spring and autumn of life.

Comedy / Drama

F.L.Y. F.L.Y. is a queer romantic comedy about two exes who get stuck living together. Things get off to a rocky start as Max navigates the situation with Raf, who just moved to LA with the dream of becoming the next drag superstar. Queer filmmakers Rafael Albarrán and Trent Kendrick wrote and directed the movie, aiming to uplift and inspire by showcasing the heart, dynamism, and diversity that makes the queer community so vibrant. “We dreamed up the movie we wished we could watch – a queer romantic comedy that helps us remember to laugh and love where we are. A film that shows us there are opportunities for healing when we pause and look inside.” About the cultural and political relevance of the film, the filmmakers said: “In our film, one of the lead characters is non-binary and dreams of becoming a drag superstar. Today, almost three years after we began writing the script, our countryʼs politicians have intensified their villainization of our community. Fear is the driving force of their rhetoric because drag represents everything they are not – joyful and free.”
