Governor's Cup: Special Edition
The South Dakota Chess Association would like to thank the Sioux Empire Chess Foundation for the organization of the Second Annual Governor's Cup Chess Tournament. The SDCA is issuing a special edition on the Governor's Cup Chess Tournament to all Governor's Cup participants with assistance from the Sioux Empire Chess Foundation. The final results of the Governor's Cup have been on the SDCA web page (http://www.usd.edu/student- life/orgs/sdca/index.htm) for nearly one month. Rashid Ziadtinov published his tournament report on his web page. Illinois plans to publish an article on Governors Cup in its November-December issue and Minnesota plans a fall edition which will include an article on the Governor's Cup Chief Tournament Director Carol Jarecki produced an article for Chess Life Online Issue #31 prior to the tournament and has done an article on the Governor's Cup for November issue of Chess Life.
We were very satisfied with the feedback that we got from the survey we took at the end of the Governor's Cup. We will probably change the format for Premier and Reserve sections back to a two day format, while retaining the three day format for the Open Section. The Blitz tournament which was won by IM Osman Palos was a great success with over forty players participating. On the other hand, placing the simultaneous exhibition on Thursday night before any players outside Sioux Falls had arrived resulted in a less than spectacular turnout.
The numbers for the Governor's Cup were reduced from last year. In the Open section we had fifty one in 1996, forty-eight in 1997. The Premier section had thirty-six persons this year, compared to forty-three in 1996. We had fifty-seven in the reserve section in 1996, this year we had forty-eight in this section. Overall, one hundred thirty-two players participated in this Governor’s Cup compared with one hundred fifty one in 1996. The scholastic numbers were improved: 41 in1996, 56 in 1997. We hope to improve our numbers next year.
On Thursday, September 11, Grandmaster Sam Palatnik played twenty five players including a television reporter and the mayor of Sioux Falls. Governor William Janklow was on hand to meet Grandmasters Gregory Serper, Dmitry, Gurevich, Boris Gulko, Sam Palatnik, International Master Osman Palos, Women Grandmaster Angelina Belkovskaia and FM Eugene Martinovsky.
The Governor gave a birthday cookie to Grandmaster Gurevich and played a first move against GM Palatnik. Carol Jarecki says in her article that the Governor was there because De told him to be there for the entire simultaneous.GM Palatnik did not lost a game. He gave a draw to Shirley Kohl of Madison. All of the titled
players assisted the Sioux Empire Chess Foundation in its Chess in the Schools program. Grandmasters Dmitry Gurevich, Gregory Serper, Patrick Wolff, Boris Gulko and Sam Palatnik, International Masters Osman Palos and Rashid Ziatdinov, Womens Grandmaster Angelina Belakovskaia and Master Alfred Carlin of Louisiana visited over twenty schools in Sioux Falls and Madison, South Dakota. Grandmasters Gulko and Wolff appeared on local radio shows, while GM Gurevich and WGM Angelina Belakovskaia were interviewed by the Public School Television Station. GM Patrick Wolff also spoke to the Downtown Rotary Club in Sioux Falls. IM Ziatdniov was not scheduled for any events, but insisted on going. Alfred Carlin was so overwhelmed with the banner John Harris Elementary which said "WELCOME ALFRED!" that he insisted on taking it home to Louisiana. Rashid Ziatdinov was awarded the Governor’s Cup on tiebreak over Patrick Wolff. This was the 100th first place finish of Ziadtinov’s career. Patrick fought back in two bad positions in the last two rounds to score one and one half out of two points against IM Ziatdinov and GM Gregory Serper. IM Ziatdinov may have missed a win against GM Wolff, but was able to beat FM Eugene Martinovsky very convincingly playing the black side of the Exchange Variation of the Queens Gambit Declined. According to Ziatdinov, he achieved a very pleasant position after 10 moves against Wolff with many chances to attack. He sacrificed a knight for two pawns because he was afraid to spoil his advantage with delay. However, he now feels that this was a mistake as Wolff forced a repetition Serper was a pawn up and had better position against Wolff.
But after the time control and a liquidation of pieces, Wolff was a pawn up and found a brilliant finishing move that forced Serper to resign. Ziatdinov felt going into his game with Martinovsky that he had an advantage because Martinovsky was not a professional player like Ziatdinov and must be tired having already played Gurevich and Serper.He states that "the Russian Chess School teaches us that a really professional player will win 10,000 when he must win only 5,000 and loses 5,000 when he must lose 10,000." Both Martinovsky and Ziatdniov state in their notes that the losing moves were made by Martinovsky in time pressure, in attempting to defend actively.
Several players pulled off big upsets against titled players. IM Osman Palos was able to draw GM Boris Gulko despite being two pawns down. FM Eugene Martinovsky beat GM Dmitry Gurevich when Gurevich attempted to win an inferior position. Albert Chow beat IM Palos when Palos lost a piece in a time scramble in which Palos incorrectly thought that Chow’s flag had fallen. (This actually happened several times in the tournament due to the nature of Chow’s clock.) Other significant upsets included 1820 rated Mike Mosher’s win over Albert Chow, Sean Nagle’s draw with WGM Angelina Belakovskaia and Joseph Felber’s draw with IM Osman Palos.
In the Premier Division, Edwin Schreiber of Colorado tied with Dmitry Khots of Minnesota for the title. The Coloradan did not enter until the last minute, but arrived on the bus to be the first at the playing site on Friday. He went undefeated with a win over his co-titlist Dmitry Khots, with draws with Bruce Draney and Wayne Pressnall. Dmitry Khots was paired with Boris Khots in the last round and won to tie Schreiber with four points. Schreiber’s draw allowed others to play for a tie for 1st, but despite games that lasted the entire session the Barth-Schoeman game and Hanson-Taylor games ended in draws.
Sigurd Rydland of Pierre, South Dakota drew with Arlo Mann in the last round to tie for the title in Reserve section. These two players entered the last round with four points. When they discovered that they were paired they began to discuss the possibilty of agreeing to a draw. NTD Carol Jarecki, who was standing behind them, infomed them that they could not agree to a draw without a serious effort. As you will see from the score of the game, both sides were clearly trying to the win the game.The two other players who had a chance to tie for first in the last round, Don Bohlken and Mike Thelen played their game to the hilt, but were unable to win.

Dave Knudson raised all of the money from the $1,000.00 donors, while David Kerkhove raised money from Dr. Arne Sorenson and Mr.Arnold Mathews and also obtained the photograph donated in the last round. This framed photograph of the Falls of the Sioux River was auctioned prior to the last round. GM Patrick Wolff was the winning bidder at $175.00 and 4 speed games to Anirudd Deshpande. GM Wolff played these games Anirudd Deshpande at the party at the Knudson’s after the tournament. There was admiration among the participants for the fundraising done by the Foundation. As Bob Holliman of Kansas City told the Illinois Chess Bulletin "Hats off to the organizers... [They] have done an excellent job of producing what everyone else only talks about --sponsorship."
My best memories of the tournament included GM Wolff saying "Darn" while swatting flies, Eugene Martinovsky’s comment with a twinkle in his eye after his win over Gurevich that. "...Grandmasters are not so tough.", sitting through a scholatic game in which one of the players did not know the moves of the pieces so he made multiple illegal moves every move, Sigurd Rydland and Arlo Mann discussing drawing their last round game in front of Tournament Director prior to the game, Carol Jarecki, watching Albert Chow make time control game after game, asking IM Osman Palos why he had a bandage on his head and discovering that he had run into a door while thinking about his move.
We appreciate all of the kind comments and support we have received. We hope to be able to put on another successful Governor’s Cup next September... Most of all we would like to thank De Knudson, without whom this event would not have been possible. As Albert Chow noted in the Illinois Chess Bulletin, she "went above and beyond what was necessary to make players comfortable. It was a wonderful change. She is an organizer similar to Helen Warren: she uses her own resources to support chess, contributing and sacrificing beyond the ordinary."
Carol Jarecki in her article in Chess Life OnLine Issue 31 echoed this senitment. "I have been so overwhelmed by the energy expended on chess in this small town in the southeastern corner of South Dakota that I don’t know where to begin. It’s probably best to start with De and David Knudson." Her article details the efforts of De and Dave Knudson in organizing the first two Governor’s Cups, raising the money from sponsors and spending the foundation’s money on assisting scholastic chess and chess clubs in South Dakota.

The Second Annual Governor’s Cup Chess Tournament was a great success thanks to the generous contributions from 20 different businesses and the financial and moral support from the Department of Tourism. The organizers once again enjoyed working with Melissa Ward from the Department of Tourism. Special thanks is extended to Wes Schmidt and Terry Likens who served as Carol Jarecki’s assistant tournament directors. Their many hours of hard work before and after the event are to be commended. David Kerkhove assisted with the fundraising effort and was also in charge of trophies and corporate plaques. Finally, I would
personally like to thank my husband, David Knudson, who continues to fund my dreams whatever they might be! He alone raised $20,000 to make this dream a reality once again.
Despite an overall drop in attendance from last year’s event, more presitigious players participated in the Second Annual Governor’s Cup Chess Tournament. Grandmasters competing were: Boris Gulko, Gregory Serper, Patrick Wolff, Dmitry Gurevich, and Sam Palatnik. Women Grandmaster Anjelina Belakovskaia attended her first Governor’s Cup also as well as International Masters Osman Palos and Rashid Ziatdinov.
When the tournament was over, Rashid Ziadtinov and Patrick Wolff were co-champions in the Open section. Edwin Schreiber and Dmitry Khots tied for the championship in the Premier section, and South Dakota’s own Sigurd Rydland and Arlo Mann won the Reserve section. Forty South Dakota played in this premier chess event. Chess players from 21 states, including South Dakota, traveled to Sioux Falls for the tournament. Aron Kapstan returned for the Governor’s Cup from Winnepeg to give the tournament its international touch!
Grandmaster Sam Palatknik gave the simultaneous exhibtion at the Empire Mall on Thursday, September 11. Sioux Falls’ Mayor Gary Hanson, Chad Sewich from KDLT-TV, and other contestants failed to defeat Grandmaster Palatnk. Govrenor Janklow attended the simultaneous exhibtion -- as a spectator! Governor Janklow presented Grandmaster Dmitry Gurevich with a large birthday cookie before the exhibition began.
International Master Osman Palos won the Blitz tournament on Saturday night. Palos, once the national chess champion in Bosnia, now resides in Chicago with his family.
All the proceeds from the Governor’s Cup Chess Tournament are used to promote chess in schools throughout South Dakota. The Sioux Empire Chess Foundation continues to provide chess boards, sets, clocks, books and scoresheets to any school interested in setting up a chess club. As part of the Governor’s Cup festivities, several Grandmasters, International Master Rashid Ziadtinov, and Louisiana's state representative, Al Carlin, visited sixteen schools in Sioux Falls and Madison to promote chess in the schools. I will never forget comforting a third grader who was devastated when he lost to International Master Osman Palos!
