Truelsons dominate SDCA again

The Truelsons dominated the summer SDCA tournaments. The Truelson team won the South Dakota Teams at Oacoma drawing only one match.. Nels took Board one prrize while his son. Nick Truelson won the board 3 prize. The Truelsons got out quickly crushing Sioux Falls One in the first round. After Sioux Falls could only draw with last years champions Merchants of Death, the Sioux Falls team was merely playing out the string. This draw however neant that the Merchants of Death would need a win over the Trulesons. They were

only able to get a drawn match with the Truelson. On board two Randall Koeller tied with Serif Suljic with Randall winning the head to head meeting. Dan Merchant won the board four prize It was decided that next years Teams would be in Pierre.

Nels tied with Lyle Hanson at the Closed for South Dakota State Champion.. They drew their head to head game and then drew the playoff so we have joint champions for the first time since 1982.This was Nels’s fourth championship and Lyle’s third championship.. Nick Truleson was able to win his third straight junior title despite losing his head to head game with Isaac Gerdes.

This is the second time that I have

this tournament. I did not see myself as a threat to winning the State Championship. I have always enjoyed the Teams because there was a more

been elected SDCA President. Both times I was not present at the meeting at which I was elected. The moral of the story is to attend the SDCA annual meeting if you do not want to be elected president. Recently

I received a phone call blaming me as SDCA president for the low attendance at the South Dakota Closed. I have only played twice in the Closed at the 1990 and 1993 tournaments in Rapid City. I only atteneded these tournaments because I had been forced to miss the South Dakota Team Tournament Personally I have never had any attraction for this atteniding

relaxed atomosphere and you could find satisfaction in your teams success even if you were not doing well I have some success at the Teams winnning

three board prizes and playing on three winning teams.Since the mid 1990s I have become moreof a tournament director than a tournament. In addition, I have emphasized scholastic chess in tournaments which I have directed.Below is list of the numbers of players at South Dakota Closed tournaments since I moved to South Dakota. The numbers havelways been low. In fact the SDCA Annual Meeting which used to be at the Closed was moved to the Teams because the Teams had higher. We tried to solve this problem by having a separate Junior tournament with a cheap entry to Juionrs who wanted to enter after their tournament was at end We ended the separate junior tournament in 2001. Since then numbers have been below 20. Maybe we need to look at the Closed. North Dakota has opened its Closed.South Dakota has not run an Open Championship since 1970. Nebraska runs a 6 person Closed championship where persons qualify by winning various tournaments. You can contact me at Wes Schmidt,2213 E.Tricia Lane,Sioux Falls,SD 57103, 6053392248emailsaschmidt@prodigy.net. if you have any suggestions on improving the Closed. I personally am going to recommend moving the Closed to Sioux Falls for next year. Wes Schmidt 1983 19 Aberdeen

I was not familiar with this gambit, and was unaware of its dangers.

5.Qxf3 is another possibility. 5 .. e6

Perhaps better was 9. Qe1, with the idea of bringing the queen to h4.

White: Terry Likens

Black: Nick Truelson (Notes by Nick Truelson)

1. d4 Nf6

2. Nc3 d5

3. e4

A rather passive move. More active alternatives include Bf4, Bg5 and g6.

6. Bd3 b6

To stop White from controlling e4.

The pieces must be traded. 13 ..Bd5 forces the exchange of White's best bishop.

resourceful 23rd move.

Round 4, 2003South Dakota State Championship White: Lyle Hanson Black: Nels Truelson (Notes by Nels Truelson)

1. e4 e5 2. Nf3 Nf6 3. Nxe5 d6 4. Nf3 Nxe4 5. d4 d5 6. Bd3 Nc6 7. 0-0 Be7 8. Nc3

The immediate offer to trade of this knight is more typically made with 8. Nd2. The text does not allow c4 for White, and thus gives Black another option.

8…… f5

Possibly the wrong order. Playing 9. Re1 first would have made Black's next move worthless.

9….. Nb4

10. Bf4 0-0

11. Rfe1 c5!

Just when the tensions appeared to be favoring White, Black seizes the initiative. None of the counter-tactics quite work for White.

12. a3 cxd 13. Nb5 Nc6

14. Nc7?…

White should have settled for 14. Nbxc4, Bc5, after which Black's more active pieces give him a slight edge with the isolani.

14 . G5

15. Nxd5 gxf4

16. Nxf4 Bd6

Other than the pawn, White's only compensation for the piece is Black's characteristic time trouble.

17. Nh3 Qf6 18. Rad1 Bd7

19. Bc4+ Kh8

20. Bd5 Rae8

Admittedly looking pretty desperate, but what else is White to do? Considering the clocks, it was good to stir something up.

21 . Ne5 22. Qxb7 Rb8

Yes, this works too, but if Black were looking for simplicity, 22 .Nxf3+ 23. gxf3, Nc5 followed by 24….f4 simply picked up a second piece.

23. Qxa7 Nxf3+

Again, this should win, but clearly better was to trap White's queen with 23 .Bc5 24. Qa5 (24. Qc7, Rfc8), Rb5 25. Qa4, Rxb2 26. Qa5, Rb5 27. Qa4, Nc3.

24. gxf3 Qe5 25. f4 Rg8+

Unnecessary. 25 ..Qxd5 26. Qxd7, Nc5 27. Qa7, Qg2+, and Black can choose his choice of wins.

26. Bxg8 Rxg8+ 27. Kf1 Qg7??

Very sad. After a relatively well-played game, Black

5 THE

throws away the win by bypassing the natural move

27….Bb5+ 28. Rd3, Qc5

29. Qxc5, Nxc5, after which

28. Qxd4 Bb5+ 29. c4 Bxc4+ Draw agreed upon.

Probably the natural result. After 30. Qxc4, Qg2+ 31. Ke2, Qxh3 32. Rxd6, Qg4+, it is very complicated, but perpetual checks tend to avail themselves for both sides.
