On March 9, 2007, a ranch hand named Mike Bloom discovered the body of Steve Haataja in a field in Dawes County, Nebraska (outside of Chadron). Steve, for many years one of the top South Dakota chessplayers, had mysteriously disappeared in early December; the circumstances surrounding his demise were also perplexing.

I considered Steve a friend, and spoke with his mother Doris in Spearfish a week after the body was found. Unfortunately, Steve’s dad Esaja passed away the same week, so Doris was understandably quite distraught. I told her that Mark Derby and I were putting together some of his chess games and a short memorial article regarding Steve. She was pleased to hear from me, saying that she remembered me from my long-ago days as a freshman at Black Hills State when Steve was a high-schooler and he and I basically constituted the Spearfish Chess Club, along with the late Mal Skarsten. My contribution to the games section will be my first and last rated games with Steve, along with some unrated games we played in the late seventies. Steve’s friends and family look forward to learning the truth surrounding his death and seeing the rumors dispelled.

The 22nd Revival of the Sioux Falls Open Chess Tournament was held on April 22-23, 2006 at Sioux Falls Labor Temple. Sixty players played in the tournament. This year has been busy for me. From February 24th, ‘till April 1st, I had some chess activity going on. The 24th of February was the South Dakota Girl’s Championship. Jill was busy at work so Heather Bunkers helped me out. The statement of the tournament was round five when one girl suddenly noticed “there are no boys this tournament.”

The Blitz and Bug House were fun also I had to learn to use the program at the tournament. After some delay we finished the Blitz on time. The Bug House ran smooth.

The 10th was a fund raiser for Grandview. I only gave Queen Odds this year. I lost one game.

The 17th I went to the Chadron State College Open. I repeated as Champion (8th or 9th time). I talked to some of the Professors about Steve Haataja. They liked him and were sadden that he had died. I know this was just after it became a murder investigation. I would have sooner been playing him last round of the tournament.

The 24th was the State Scholastic in Pierre. Jill was there to help so everything ran smoothly. Isaac Gerdes finally gets to go to the Denker tournament.

The 29th was the National Junior High Tournament Bug House and Blitz tournaments. Grandview and South did not do as well this year. I think it was the older players.

The 30th the regular tournament began. I was Section Chief of the K-8 Under 800.

This tournament had the usual. Players agreeing to Mate when it was not (they sign the sheet so the result stands then you tell them if you want to.).

I also passed my test to become an Associate National Tournament Director.
