Sandor Kustar dominated the SDCA events in 2005. His team,the Merchants of Death won their second straight team championship with Serif Suljic and Dan Merchant returning from last years team. Sandor also won his board prize with a perfect score. Thomas Cleberg took second board on tiebreak over Nick Truelson and Serif Suljic. Robert Wallace took the 3rd board prize while Jill Likens took the 4th board prize. Terry and Jill Likens returned to their positions as President and Treasurer of the South Dakota Chess Association. Dan Merchant has created a new website which does much more than the previous website. In his treasurers report,Dan reported that we had over $3000 in the bank. We appropriated monies to send Alexander Young to the Arnold Denker Tournament of High School Champions and Taryn Gerdes to the Susan Polgar Girls Invitational Tournament.

The South Dakota Closed was held on September 24-25,2005 at Grandview Elementary School in Rapid City,SD.
Sandor Kustar won the tournament with a perfect score. Sandor is an international master from Hungary who now lives with his wife and two children in Okaton , South Dakota west of Murdo. Lyle Hanson finished second. Alexander Young was 1st B and South Dakota Junior Champion. Dick Rostrom took first C while Mike Boland won the D and below prize.

GOVERNOR’S CUP SCHOLASTIC
Sioux Empire Chess Foundation sponsored the Governor’s Cup Scholastic Chess Tournament. The chess tournament was held at Augustana College in Sioux Falls on October 15, 2005. Seventy eight from twenty five teams played in the tournament. Isaac Gerdes found time away from his football career to win the K 12 section. Zach Truelson dominated the K 9 section, but Pierre Indian Learning Center took the team title. Rapid City Grandview took the K 6 and K 3 titles while Pierre Indian Learning Center finished second in each division. Rapid City Grandview finished with 9 of 14 medalists in these divisions. Pierre brought 31 players while Grandview brought 17 players. Our thanks to Glen Eide of Pierre Indian Learning Center and Randy Christenson of Grandview for bringing their players to this event.
