CANCER BATTLE

Ü

A breaking report: Veteran journalist Larry King has bested cancer — again. A decade after the host of Politicking With Larry King, 83, beat prostate cancer, doctors found a stage I tumor in his lungs. Though the disease doesn’t usually show symptoms until late, the heart attack survivor tells Us, “I do a chest X-ray every year. I feel very lucky.” And incredibly healthy. After a July 17 surgery at L.A.’s Cedars-Sinai, King, wed to TV host Shawn, 57, was in the clear. His only symptoms: shortness of breath due to losing 20 percent of his lung. “My recovery was fast,” he says. “I went back to work two weeks later.” Now the TV and radio host — he marked his 60th year in media in May — is looking to the future and a potential Broadway run. (“I’d like to do an evening where I tell stories,” he says.) Notes King, “I’ve never felt better than I do now. I need to be studied in a lab!”

A friend says the Toronto-based Suits actress was “a little nervous” at the thought of meeting boyfriend Prince Harry’s beloved grandmother, Queen Elizabeth II, the woman he once called “the example I aspire to.” And though it had taken Duchess Kate five years to score face time with the 91-year-old monarch (they chatted at a 2008 royal family wedding), Markle knew she would be curtsying to Her Majesty before year’s end. “He’s keen to make an introduction,” a Harry pal told Us in the spring. “It will happen when it’s the right time.”

A day after her Sept. 3 meeting with Markle, the queen attended the opening ceremony of Queensferry Crossing.

been up yet all summer,” a Harry source explains. Another motivation for the two-day trip, says the source: “He wanted to introduce Meghan to the queen.” So 24 hours after they arrived, the duo popped over to Balmoral Castle, the queen’s summer residence, seven miles away. “It went well,” says the source. “It’ll no doubt be the first of many encounters.” The next could involve the logistics of a royal wedding. While a source says Harry intended to propose during the African holiday — he created a ring using diamonds from a brooch that once belonged to his mom, Princess Diana — another insider says the former Army Air Corps helicopter pilot, 33, “wouldn’t tell anyone for a while.” Keeping his desire for secrecy in mind, select palace aides have already begun preparations for making an engagement proclamation. “These things are planned well in advance; it’s not easy to roll out that kind of news,” explains the source. “Everyone knows how happy Harry is and is excited for the day it’s announced.”

THE QUEEN’S BLESSING For now, the pair are reveling in a triumphant visit. “The entire

|

weekend was a success,” declares the source. For Harry, notes the source, “he was able to introduce someone he loves to someone he cares for deeply.” And the L.A.-born actress received rave reviews. Though the source notes much has been made about the fact that Markle is a commoner, raised by clinical therapist Doria Ragland and former Married. . . With Children lighting director Tom, “she fits perfectly into the family,” says the source. “The difference in backgrounds means absolutely nothing.” The Northwestern University theater and international studies double major, wed briefly to talent manager Trevor Engelson, “gets on fabulously with Charles,” says the source, “as do she and Camilla.” Then there’s her chemistry with Harry. The actress declared in Vanity Fair’s October issue, “We’re two people who are really happy and in love.” And their ardor has only increased since their romantic holiday. (The trip’s finale: an outing to the 355-foot Victoria Falls on the border of Zambia and Zimbabwe.) “Meghan and Harry are in such a good place — Africa took their relationship to a whole other level,” says the source. “They’re just crazy

LONDON CALLING Their separation will be mercifully brief. Come September 23, Harry will head to Markle’s city to host the third celebration of his Invictus Games. The event, created to honor wounded veterans, will also serve as the pair’s unofficial coming-out party. “Meghan won’t be front and center,” notes the source, “but you’ll see them together and it will be the first time they publicly step out like that. It’s a big deal to Harry.” As is what comes next. Though Markle is committed to a month of filming on her USA series, this fall “they’ll have an opportunity for a vacation together,” says a source. And by the holidays, they’ll be living in their own personal paradise. The source insists the seventh season of Suits will be Markle’s last, and once it wraps later this year, “She will definitely move to London.” While Markle has already started scouting London real estate “so she has somewhere for her family to stay,” says a Markle pal, she and Harry will bunk together. Notes the pal, “Setting up their future is top priority for both of them.” And Markle has indicated she’s ready to accept the responsibilities that come with marrying a prince. “I’m sure there will be a time when we will have to come forward and present ourselves and have stories to tell, but I hope what people will understand is that this is our time,” she told Vanity Fair. “We’re happy. Personally, I love a great love story.” Particularly her own. “The past month together with Harry has been the best of her life,” says a Markle pal.  “She couldn’t be happier.”

A source says William and Kate plan to take George to school “most days.”

Inside Kate’s Struggle Duchess Kate knows how to keep calm and carry on. Since discovering she and William were expecting their third child in late August, the 35-year-old — now 12 weeks along — has suffered from hyperemesis gravidarum. The extreme morning sickness, which she also experienced with George and Princess Charlotte, 2, has left the royal confined to her bed at Kensington Palace’s Apartment 1A. Says a source close to Kate and William, “She’s being seen by a doctor daily.” She has a nurse on hand as well. On September 2, Kate’s mom Carole Middleton took up residence in the 22-room spread. “Carole is Kate’s rock in tough situations,” explains the source. And Kate is maintaining a healthy outlook. Despite her condition, she’s ecstatic, says an insider: “She and William have wanted a third since last year!”

GEORGE’S BIG DAY! Introducing George Mountbatten-Windsor. On September 7, 4-year-old Prince George, who will eschew royal titles in school, began his first day at London’s Thomas’s Battersea. Arriving with dad Prince William, 35, shortly before 9 a.m. — on bed rest, a “desperately sad” Duchess Kate was forced to stay home, says a source — the tyke was met by Helen Haslem, head of the lower school, before being whisked to his classroom of 21 students.

There he was “introduced to his form teacher and his teaching assistant,” Ben Thomas, principal of Thomas’s London Day Schools, told reporters, adding the focus of the $7,820-a-year coed school is “enjoyment. We are going to try to make this a really happy, safe and secure time.” One filled with mixed emotions for William and Kate. Says a source, “They are proud of George and how well behaved he was, but it’s frightening to see him grow up this fast!”

SHOWING LOVE

KATIE & JAMIE

Why They’re atie Holmes was sick of living in secret. After dodging rumors about her relationship with Jamie Foxx for four long years, it was time to come out of hiding. At first, says a source, “Katie was super worried about the public attention” and was content to hole up in Foxx’s massive, gated estate outside of Los Angeles. But by this spring, reveals the source, she was “tired of playing that game.” An April 2 dinner in NYC was the couple’s first real tiptoe into the spotlight, says the source, but they were making plans for more 52

outings. Dished the source at the time: “They’re going to start going public.” Come Labor Day, the proof was in the pictures. After years of rarely being seen together, the two were photographed September 4, striding down a Malibu beach hand-inhand and splashing in the Pacific Ocean surf. In the past, Holmes, mom to 11-year-old Suri, and Foxx employed cloak-anddagger methods to keep their love under wraps. For date nights, they’d rent out whole restaurants or sneak in through back elevators. And they spent the entirety of a December

jaunt to Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, confined to their suite. But by spring, the Logan Lucky actress, 38, and the Oscar winner, 49, knew it was time to come out of the relationship closet. Notes a

Public even within his inner circle, Foxx has been hesitant to open up about his romance. “Everyone knows they’re together, but it’s still unspoken,” says an insider, noting some friends had put the pieces together. “He could often be overheard talking flirtatiously to someone on the phone and excited to wrap up work and go home,” says the insider. “It’s been obvious that he’s had someone special in his life for a long time.”

SLOW BUILD When the two first danced at a 2013 fundraiser in

(a year after Holmes’ highly publicized divorce from Tom Cruise, 55, was finalized), the romance was merely a fling. By 2015, however, a source told Us the union had grown “very, very serious.” (Another source added that Holmes was “head over heels,” noting Suri was also a fan of the actor.) Their quiet start could be the reason their bond is still strong today. “They wanted to get to know each other and see where things were headed so it could develop in private before they went public,” says a source. “But  it’s very serious.”

Living Her Best Life After ending her summer with a romantic debut, Holmes headed east for a dose of glamour. On September 7 she celebrated New York Fashion Week by supporting pal Zac Posen at a screening of his House of Z documentary. Later that night, she trekked to Queens to catch a U.S. Open match in the Emirates Ace Suite with her college-aged nephew and a pal. Says a source, “She was super low-key.”

FAMILY MATTERS

F r The nursery is set up and sitters are at the ready: Kardashian and West take on a third

S

he found the silver lining. Devastated that doctors told her there was no way she could safely carry a third child, Kim Kardashian searched for the benefits of using a surrogate. Aside from skipping another difficult pregnancy — the reality star dealt with everything from preeclampsia to a condition that created a hole in her uterus — the best part, she surmised on an April 2016 episode of Keeping Up With the Kardashians, would be to have “a new baby and have no one know and live my life for a good year before we announce it.”

Step one of her plan is underway. Though multiple sources confirm to Us that the 36-year-old and her husband of three years Kanye West are expecting via surrogate, the notoriously public pair aren’t racing to share their joy with Kim’s 103 million Instagram followers. With North, now 4, the rapper let the news slip midconcert, while 54

THREE’S COMPANY This project was in the works since Saint’s December 2015 arrival. Despite a rough pregnancy (she labeled it “the worst experience of my life”) Kardashian was anxious to add to her brood. The second-eldest of six kids, “Kim has always wanted a big family,” says the source, adding that a large clan also appealed to only child West. So the pair, who conceived Saint via in vitro fertilization after a yearlong struggle, says the source, “began discussing surrogacy.” Their family plan contained specifics. With North being so close to 5-year-old cousin Penelope, “they wanted to give her a sister,” says a Kanye insider. Consider it done. Reveals the insider, “They’re having a girl.” But they’re not preparing North to share her ballet slippers and Balmain blazers just yet. Ahead of Saint’s arrival, Kardashian blogged about reading books to her “about getting a baby brother.” But since the tyke hasn’t yet taken to Saint (see sidebar) “they probably won’t bring it up until closer to term,” says the source. “Nori doesn’t like sharing the attention.”

THE WEST PALACE Fortunately she won’t have to share her room. Come October, says the source, the massive three-year With reporting by Brody Brown

overhaul of the family’s $20 million Hidden Hills mansion will finally be complete. “Everything is done in terms of renovation, but they want all the construction workers out before they move in,” explains the source. “They’re just finishing up the smaller things.” But one major task is already complete. A source says one of the spread’s eight bedrooms has been earmarked for Baby West: “The nursery is already set up!” Babysitters have been recruited as well, with all of the reality star’s sisters volunteering to watch over her newest addition. “The kids are always with an aunt or their grandmother,” says the source of Kris Jenner (or Lovey, as her grandkids call her). “Kim has a great network of family who all want to spend as much time with the kids as possible. It’s incredible. And they’re so excited  to have a third.”

Brother She’s got the baby brother blues. When North first objected to Kim breastfeeding Saint, “I thought it was a phase,” the star revealed while hosting Live with Kelly and Ryan August 28. But months in, says Kim, she still “does not like her brother.” A source says North often throws a tantrum when Saint gets attention: “It’s challenging, but she’ll grow out of it.”

Kardashian shared that she was expecting 21-month-old Saint with the two million viewers tuned into her E! show’s 2015 midseason finale. But the third time around, the 21time Grammy winner, 40, and his bride are trying a new tack. “There have been a lot of things said and Kanye and I have not confirmed anything,” Kardashian coyly told The Hollywood Reporter in a recent interview. And they intend to remain quiet well into 2018. Says a source, “They won’t announce anything until the baby is here.” But in the privacy of the Kardashians’ Hidden Hills, California, enclave, says the source, baby talk abounds: “Everyone in the family is so excited!”

Souza “didn’t own a bike” before signing up for the Nautica Malibu Triathlon. Now, she sweats five days a week (“sometimes only for 30 to 40 minutes”) and goes through the entire race (half-mile swim, 17-mile bike ride, four-mile run) on Saturdays. Still, “no matter how much I train, every time I’m swimming in the ocean I feel a panic.”

Day LTHY On weekends, Souza’s husband of three years, banker Marshall Trenkmann, brings home fresh catches from the Pacific Ocean. Usually they “grill, bake or broil it,” but her current fitness regimen allows for more carbs in the form of a 2 P.M. taco lunch: “I put hot sauce, pico de gallo or red salsa on everything.”

For her 5 P.M. pre-training meal, Souza, 31, tops a quinoa and brown-rice bowl with poached eggs and avocado, plus sauteed kale and spinach. “I like to keep it fresh and have all colors of the rainbow in my fruits and vegetables,” she says, so she’ll often toss in bell peppers and other ingredients from her fridge.

A PIECE OF THE PIE “If my body is demanding pizza, I like to put as many vegetables on it as possible,” says Souza of her 9 P.M. pick-up order from Fig Santa Monica. She winds down with a cup of buttermint, lemon or ginger tea and heads to bed by 10:30 P.M. so she and her spouse can squeeze in “intentional pillow-talk time.”
