While many people assume how they age is determined strictly by genetics, your lifestyle has a direct impact on your genes, your health and how you age. That’s because we’re not born with a finite amount of muscle; our muscles are in a constant state of being broken down and reproduced. The Secret to Strength and Resilience in a Harsh Land: The Seri People and the Nopal Cactus
The Nopalea story begins on a warm Mexican night as TriVita founder, Michael R. Ellison, sat by a campfire in the Sonoran Desert. Though he couldn’t understand the Seri language of the men around him, he began to feel a sense of awe and recognized that they must be talking about something they deeply revered.
Asking his translator what the men were saying, Michael learned that they were recalling the strength and resilience of their ancestors, ancient desert warriors of renown.
An Ancient People Thriving in a Harsh Land
The Seri name roughly translates to “man of the sand.”1 From their sacred island of Isla Tiburón, or “Shark Island,” to their fishing grounds in El Canal del Infiernillo, meaning “Little Hell’s Channel,” the place names where the indigenous Seri people lived bore evidence of the harsh environment in which they dwelt. 2
Thriving as hunters and fishermen in an unforgiving land where the desert met the sea, the ancient Seri men were celebrated for their strength, endurance and athleticism. They were also brave and fierce fighters, protecting their people from the threat of neighboring tribes and even defending against European invaders in the 1500s. 3

Back in Arizona, Michael went to work to realize his dream of bringing relief to thousands of people living with the often debilitating effects of chronic inflammation. Teaming with university researchers, Michael’s product development team found the miracle plant they’d been believing for. It was the fruit of the Ruby Red Opuntia ficus indica ... the Nopal cactus.
