The Old Ways: Wildcrafting
Since the indigenous people used wildcrafting techniques to collect the nopal fruit, TriVita also began by using similar methods of collecting the
naturally growing fruit. This process allowed the team to determine which plants and fruits would be best to use for the Nopalea product. However, it wasn’t sustainable for product quality due to the desert heat and the time from harvest to processing.

A Better Solution: Farming
So, rather than picking wild fruit, our nopal cactus are now farmed in their natural climate, the hot and dry Sonoran desert of the American Southwest. Quality control begins right in the field, where the nopal fruit is harvested by hand, not machine, at the peak of ripeness. Harvesting farm-grown nopales preserves the freshness and nutritional value of the fruit.
Extraordinary Fruit
Let’s take a moment to discuss why such care is essential to the manufacturing of Nopalea. There are several different kinds of Opuntia,
such as the yellow cactus pear and the green cactus pear, but it’s the ruby red Opuntia ficus indica that offers the highest concentrations of betalains, a particularly powerful class of natural antioxidants. Betalains help neutralize toxins in the body, drain away toxic waste and, most importantly, reduce the activity of enzymes known to cause unhealthy inflammation.
The rich, ripe fruit of the ruby red nopal, with its vibrant purple-red hue, is the only known source of 24 naturally occurring betalains, making it one of the most powerful sources of antioxidants in all of nature. This is because the Sonoran Desert is the most extreme desert in North America, and the Nopal plant needs these betalains to survive in such an inhospitable environment.

Exceptional Processing
The production of Nopalea takes place in a stateof-the-art facility according to a regular, ongoing manufacturing schedule to ensure you receive the freshest product possible.
Sterile manufacturing may be done using either of two sterilization processes: terminal sterilization or aseptic processing.4 As its name suggests, terminal sterilization sterilizes a product in its final packaging. While often used for the sterilization of surgical instruments and medical devices, its use of steam or irradiation precludes its use for the nopal fruit puree.
Instead, we use the second method, aseptic processing, in which the product and container are sterilized separately, and then filled and sealed in an extremely high-quality environment. This aseptic process minimizes the risk of introducing any microbial contaminant into the product as it moves through the manufacturing process, helping to ensure that the product is free of contaminants, such as bacteria, chemicals or physical contaminants. Plus, the proprietary bottling process used for Nopalea is untouched by human hands.
