Healthy New Year from TriVita
THOUGHTS FROM THE EDITOR
Accept the past and move ahead with healthy anticipation
A 10 Essentials
for Health and Wellness Good health is a gift to be treasured and nurtured every day. TriVita joyfully shares these keys to helping you experience wellness:® the 10 Essentials of physical, emotional and spiritual health.
Physical 1. Breathe Deeply 2. Drink Water 3. Sleep Peacefully
couple of months ago I saw the movie “About Time.” It was definitely a “feel good” movie that leaves you thinking about the decisions made each day and how each one can change the course of your life. Without giving too much of the story away, the lead character is told on his 21st birthday that the men in their family have the ability to travel back in time. He uses his special gift to redo many of his own life experiences, sort of rewind his life, if you will. He discovers that certain time-travel incidents alter his meeting the woman of his dreams, so he uses his gift several times to meet her over and over, finally to win her heart. He finds out that his unique gift can’t save him from certain sorrows of life and that traveling back in time to redo particular scenarios can be not only life altering, but also dangerous. Many of us wish we could travel back in time and redo certain situations so we won’t have to suffer negative consequences. But, since that’s not possible, we can take advice from one of TriVita’s 10 Essentials for Health and Wellness: #9 Develop Acceptance. As you tear off December 2013 from your calendar, it’s time to let the past be the past, accept where you’re at today and go into 2014 with healthy anticipation. Each year creates new milestones in technology with medical science advancing light years away from where it was when our grandparents or even our parents were alive. Although illness isn’t something any one of us want to experience, unless we make healthy lifestyle choices, our bodies will eventually break down, allowing sickness and disease to take root.
7. Be Forgiving
It’s an honor to work for a company that’s always looking ahead with cutting-edge product formulations and manufacturing processes to provide quality products designed to help keep our bodies functioning the way they were created to function. This month, you’ll want to read William “Dr. Bill” Wheeler’s article on pages 6–7 about the unique bottling process of our amazing Nopalea™. When we first interviewed Dr. Bill on producing Nopalea, we were all amazed at how passionate he became as he described the process as a craft that takes surgical skill. Be on the lookout this year for more TriVita products with the same standard of quality.
8. Practice Gratitude
Healthy New Year!

PURSUING WELLNESS
2014 brings more opportunities to experience greater wellness! By Michael R. Ellison
H
appy New Year 2014! This year has started off with great anticipation and excitement in sharing new products to help you experience greater wellness. You will see new products from the Amazon Rainforests coming out throughout the year. We are pleased to have the opportunity Michael R. Ellison to share these products and the Founder of TriVita vast knowledge of “Amazon John” Easterling, who has spent over 25 years in the region studying the herbs and their use by the indigenous people.
I would encourage everyone to take one of the most important steps you can take toward better health in 2014: reaching optimal weight. The health benefits are enormous, and include improved blood pressure and cholesterol, and lower C-reactive protein, a key marker of inflammation in the body. Not everyone will experience the same results, but everyone can achieve some health benefits from healthy weight management.
This will be one of the most significant times in TriVita’s history for new product development. I would encourage you to make 2014 a year to expand your knowledge and understanding of how these products work together in giving you balanced nutritional support. This is the year when personal responsibility will rank high for improving one’s health—and we want to partner with you to support your wellness goals.
In a study conducted by Bridgeport University, Nopalea™ was shown to lower C-reactive protein. Having a C-reactive protein count below 3 is the most desirable. Thanks to Nopalea and living a lifestyle based on the 10 Essentials of Health and Wellness, both my wife and I now have a rating below 1. Be an evangelist of wellness and spread the news about C-reactive protein. The more people know about their key health markers, the more opportunity there is to experience better health and wellness.
Another exciting announcement is the new Leanology® Weight Loss Study starting this month at the TriVita Wellness Center. The study will not only demonstrate the safety and efficacy of the Leanology products, but will also measure how key biometric health markers are impacted by weight loss.

Don’t give up on your wellness goals to lower inflammation. If you are in doubt about your inflammation levels, I would strongly encourage you to get your C-reactive protein blood marker test (see page 13 about asking your doctor for the test). It may be one of the most important things you can do for your wellness program.
If you haven’t written your health goals for 2014, why not take a few moments today and create that list and get started on a fabulous 2014 wellness journey.

BEHIND THE LABEL
Nopalea:™ quality-crafted by experts Not just a manufacturing process… it’s the utmost in quality control By William Wheeler, Ph.D. Senior Vice President, Manufacturing Services What’s the story behind TriVita’s quality and safety standards for all its products? This new series answers the question, starting with William “Dr. Bill” Wheeler, a noted expert in manufacturing quality for over 25 years. Here, Dr. Bill discusses TriVita’s Foundational Value #7*—Quality-controlled Packaging and Production (see page 34), and how it applies to our most popular product, Nopalea™.
N
opalea customers enjoy so many aspects of this unique wellness drink… the taste, color and certainly its clinically tested health benefits. But what many don’t know is the extraordinary lengths we go to, to ensure absolute product quality in each bottle. It’s a fascinating, painstaking process to bring you the utmost in quality control for the utmost in value. After each Nopal cactus fruit is harvested (by hand, not by machine) it is puréed into a liquid and transported in a refrigerated truck to our bottling plant in Corona, CA. The aseptic (sterile) manufacturing process begins the moment the product enters the front door. What that means is that everything in the manufacturing facility is completely sterile: lab coats and hair nets are worn by staff and no jewelry
6 l VITAJOURNAL
or extraneous personal items are allowed. The workers never touch the liquid. Plant security is also rigorously enforced. The puréed liquid quickly undergoes herbal identification testing upon delivery to make sure that it hasn’t been contaminated with fillers or any other impurities. Rigorous inspection During the formulation and bottling process, I personally inspect the entire ‘run’ of Nopalea, which can often include more than 200 tanks of liquid, each weighing nearly 500 pounds. These tanks are refrigerated and sterile. After additional ingredients are added, I sample from each batch to test for pH (alkalinity/acidity), color and taste. During any batch testing, if I sense that anything isn’t right, I reject the entire batch. This rigorous process is repeated often during the 5- to 7-step formulation
and bottling process. It often takes at least five hours to test each batch of Nopalea. Sterile bottling The bottling process is handled with surgical skill. Before Nopalea is bottled, the bottles are inverted and sprayed on the inside with a sterile solution in an enclosed chamber to ensure that they are totally clean. Once they are dried, the bottles immediately move down a belt to a filling line—they are untouched by human hands during the entire process. After the bottles are filled with Nopalea, they are immediately secured with a seal and a cap. It takes less than 30 seconds for the entire bottling and sealing process. Nopalea freshness is assured by maintaining a quick 48hour process from harvest to bottling.

“...I personally inspect the entire ‘run’ of Nopalea, which can often include more than 200 tanks of liquid, each weighing nearly 500 pounds.”
At every point in the movement of Nopalea from point A to point B, the product is repeatedly tested for quality. It’s also refrigerated from harvest through bottling, and once it arrives at our warehouse. Ultimate craftsmanship Nopalea is a quality-crafted product. That’s why it’s so good and effective. Many companies just hand off their formula to the vendor with the lowest bid and hope for the best—that’s not TriVita. We own all the ingredients that go into each bottle of Nopalea and personally supervise the entire formulation and bottling process.
1-800-991-7116
Producing Nopalea is a science and a craft that takes time and money. No short cuts are allowed and no expense is spared to ensure quality. During my own lengthy career in the nutraceutical industry, I’ve never seen any other supplement manufactured with such painstaking care. TriVita uses only trusted vendors and oversees the entire manufacturing process, from harvest to distribution to you, our valued Members. That same standard of quality applies to all TriVita products, because we only utilize facilities complying with FDA Good Manufacturing Practices guidelines.
(For more information about how TriVita adheres to the strict guidelines of the Good Manufacturing Practices [GMP] see the article on page 23.) So, the next time you take a sip of Nopalea, I hope you will have a newfound appreciation for the care and control that goes into each and every bottle of our superfruit wellness drink. Savor the taste, the color and the wellness benefits. Rest assured that Nopalea is the finest possible product, made to the most exacting standards. It’s crafted with care by a company that cares. * For a complete list of TriVita’s 10 Foundational Values see page 34.

Lose weight, gain everything at the TriVita Wellness Center Unique new Weight Management Program open to all
I
f you’ve tried “everything” to lose weight and keep it off, there’s something new you haven’t tried: the TriVita Weight Management Program (WMP) at the TriVita Wellness Center. Debuting this month—just in time to help support New Year resolutions—the program reaches beyond numbers on a scale to help you feel healthy and be healthy, with all the energy and vitality to fulfill your life purpose. “This program isn’t just about looking good,” notes Harolyn Gilles, M.D., the Wellness Center Physician and WMP medical supervisor. “It’s about managing weight for life and for health, with a completely customized, medically supervised program encompassing diet, exercise, lifestyle, detoxification and targeted supplementation.” The health hazards of excess weight are well known, and afflicting people around the globe. From heart disease to many types of cancer, Dr. Gilles says the risks of carrying excess weight are too serious to overlook. “Wellness is not the absence of disease, but optimizing your body’s functionality so that you can do the things you want to do.” 10 l VITAJOURNAL
With the Wellness Center’s WMP, you can benefit from Dr. Gilles’ expertise in safe, long-term weight loss, plus the guidance of Fitness/Nutrition Director Jolene Goring to help you establish healthy eating and activity habits for life. Here’s what the two aspects of the program include: 1. Medical testing, supervision and more Under the direct supervision of Dr. Gilles, the WMP offers these elements for success: • A complete health risk assessment customized for weight loss. • A weight loss medical exam, including biometric screenings for blood sugar, cholesterol, blood pressure, percentage of body fat and more. • A customized eating plan based on blood type. • Hormone therapy proven to aid weight loss, including a proprietary compound developed by Dr. Gilles, and used in past weight loss programs to achieve a 97% success rate.
• TriVita Leanology® products highprotein meal replacement shakes, fat-burning capsules and appetitecontrol soft chews. Depending on individual client needs, other evaluations and services may be recommended, based on the medical exam and biometric numbers. “I incorporated many of these elements in my private practice in Scottsdale, AZ for years with great success,” notes Dr. Gilles. In fact, her weight loss program was scientifically studied, and its success rate (97%) was based on not just pounds lost, but meeting a goal weight within a specified time period. 2. Fitness and nutrition with an expert coach Even if the couch is your best friend, Jolene Goring can help you put more vitality in your life. “Lots of people fail at weight loss and maintenance because they’re just overwhelmed,” says the WMP Fitness/Nutrition Director. “Our program sets you up for success. For example, I might ask you to commit to taking five minutes each morning to do one simple thing, like stretching. Then we build from there.”

ASK DOCTOR CONARD
Q: Who is at risk for a B-12 deficiency? By Scott Conard, M.D.
A:
Scott Conard, M.D., DABFM, FAAFP, has more than 20 years of successful clinical practice, research and leadership experience. Through his Texasbased practice and books he’s authored, he empowers people to take control of their health.
The short answer: everyone over 40. As I have written before, the aging process can take a toll on your body’s ability to absorb Vitamin B-12 from the foods you eat. In a Tufts University study, scientists found that close to 40 percent of Americans may have “low normal” B-12 levels. What surprised the researchers was that people with these low normal levels were getting plenty of B-12 in their diets; it just wasn’t being sufficiently absorbed. But please don’t let the “normal” fool you: some people may show symptoms of a Vitamin B-12 deficiency even in this harmless-sounding range. Other factors that can increase your risk of Vitamin B-12 deficiency include: • Veganism • Vegetarianism • Pernicious anemia (as many as 800,000 older adults may be unaware they have this condition) • Celiac or Crohn’s disease • Gastrointestinal surgery Certain medications can interfere with B-12 absorption as well. These include: proton pump inhibitors, used for acid reflux and peptic ulcer disease; histamine H2 receptor antagonists used for peptic ulcer disease; chloramphenicol, an antibiotic; and metformin, a diabetes drug.
12 l VITAJOURNAL
What are the risks of deficiency? Because Vitamin B-12 plays an integral role in keeping nerve and blood cells healthy, and is involved in DNA creation, a deficiency can seriously—sometimes permanently—damage your health. According to the National Institutes of Health, Vitamin B-12 deficiency may cause: Fatigue, weakness, constipation, loss of appetite, weight loss, megaloblastic anemia, numbness and tingling in the hands and feet, balance problems, depression, confusion, dementia, poor memory, soreness of the mouth or tongue. As I reported last month, researchers are continuing to discover how even mild deficiency can adversely affect health. That’s why it’s so critical to get enough of this vital nutrient—and to make sure that it is properly absorbed by your body. I cannot overemphasize the importance of adding a high-quality, sublingual Vitamin B-12 supplement to a healthy, balanced diet. This under-the-tongue delivery method helps get Vitamin B-12 to your bloodstream quickly, bypassing the digestive system, which can derail B-12 absorption.

THE DOCTOR IS IN
How to ask your doctor about testing C-reactive protein (CRP) By Lester Adler, M.D., M.D.H.
K
nowledge is power. This is all the more true when it comes to our health. Since many diseases result from our own lifestyle choices, proper information can motivate us to make a major directional turn. Gently or directly, the body often gives us that information itself. But, what if there is no ache, pain, nor signal that the body is not well? How can we see if trouble is brewing before it advances to pain, disease and limitation? Hindsight is 20/20, but preventative foresight is the ultimate goal. One of the miracles of modern science is the serum blood test. Hundreds of molecules travel through our bloodstream, each one telling a story about our health. When you get your annual blood test, your doctor looks for important indicators that, if out of range, guide in treatment. C-reactive protein (CRP) is not typically among them. Don’t let that stop you. C-reactive protein is an established marker for inflammation, the defense and repair process of the body. It is designed for acute situations. When the irritant, and therefore, the inflammation doesn’t resolve, it hurts cell membranes, such as in arteries and veins. Elevated CRP is linked to a three-fold increase in heart attacks. Currently, the American Heart Association recommends CRP testing only when a patient is at “intermediate” risk 1-800-991-7116
of having a heart attack in the next 10 years. Some doctors may not order a CRP test if you fall into the low risk category. But, heart disease is just one reason to have your CRP tested. Cancer, chronic lower respiratory disease, stroke, dementia, diabetes and nephritis are also attributed to chronic inflammation. Even depression is now recognized as an inflammatory process. These diseases are usually long in the works. Inflammation silently irritates or “burns” tissue on a microscopic level. At some point, symptoms break through. One day a person has a hard time walking. One day they realize that their cough isn’t going away. Or, one day they have a major event like a heart attack or stroke. The good news is that inflammation and CRP can be brought down. Proper diet, exercise, stress reduction and supplementation can ease the fire allowing tissues to recover… the sooner, the better.
Lester Adler, M.D. Lester Adler, M.D., M.D.H., is a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine. He is certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine and is also a licensed Homeopathic Physician. He currently maintains a practice of Integrative Medicine in Sedona, AZ.
If you would like your doctor to order a CRP test for you, ask for one. Say that you have learned that chronic inflammation is a silent condition and you would like to know if you have it. If your insurance will not cover it, then find out what the cash fee is and pay in advance. The CRP test is well worth the investment in your future health.

AGING WELL
Give your health a boost Learning new skills, gardening, volunteering can help
W
hat do learning digital photography, do-ityourself projects and volunteering at your local food bank have in common? According to recent studies, all three can help boost your health! Learn new skills, sharpen the mind You may have heard that doing puzzles and similar tasks can keep the mind sharp, but researchers at the University of Texas at Dallas found that learning challenging new skills trumps puzzles in terms of brain benefits. “It seems it is not enough just to get out and do something—it is important to get out and do something that is unfamiliar and mentally challenging, and that provides broad stimulation mentally and socially,” said lead researcher Denise Park. “When you are inside your comfort zone you may be outside of the enhancement zone.” Researchers assigned 221 adults, ages 60 to 90, to engage in particular activities: one group learned a new skill (digital photography, quilting, or both); the second group did familiar tasks at home such as listening to classical music and doing word 14 l VITAJOURNAL
puzzles; and the third group engaged in social interactions, field trips and entertainment. After three months of these activities, the group that took on the challenging tasks—which involve working memory, long-term memory and other highlevel mental processes—showed improvements in memory compared to the other two groups. “This is speculation, but what if challenging mental activity slows the rate at which the brain ages?” asks Park. “Every year that you save could be an added year of high quality life and independence.” Grow veggies, help your heart Simple daily activities such as gardening, housework and do-ityourself projects may reduce the risk of cardiovascular problems by up to 30 percent, Swedish researchers reported. They found that daily activity has heart-health benefits comparable to intentional exercise, though they caution against abandoning formal exercise, as the combination of the two reduces the risk even more.
These findings are good news for those who can manage daily tasks but not necessarily the high intensity required for formal exercise. Volunteer, you may live longer Giving back to your community may have unexpected benefits for your own health. Researchers from the University of Exeter in the United Kingdom analyzed data from numerous studies and concluded that volunteering can improve mental health and even help you live longer. Compared to non-volunteers, those who regularly volunteer have a 20 percent lower risk of death. Other benefits linked with volunteerism include lower levels of depression, increased life satisfaction, reduced stress, improved quality of life and enhanced well-being. Volunteering can also open the door to new social networks, renew a person’s sense of purpose and give you a true sense of accomplishment.

EATING FOR WELLNESS
Is a gluten-free diet for you? By Christa Orecchio
O
ne of my best friends recently said to me, “Gluten-free is just a trend and a fad, and it will go away.” I felt my breath shorten and my blood boil as I contested her statement, because nothing could be further from the truth. Many people think the same way as my friend, but what they don’t know is that we are not eating real food when we eat wheat, a main source of gluten protein.
Christa Orecchio is a Certified Clinical Nutritionist and Holistic Health Counselor. She is also the founder and owner of The Whole Journey, a clinical nutrition and health practice located in Encinitas, CA.
Modern wheat is not what our grandparents and great-grandparents ate. What we are eating today is scientifically engineered “frankenwheat”. It has three times the gluten, leading to tremendous inflammation, digestive upset, low energy and brain fog. It also contains a super starch called amylopectin, which the body does not know how to convert to energy; instead, the body stores it as fat. This is a big reason why modern wheat is a major player in the diabetes and obesity epidemic we are facing as a nation. Dr. Mehmet Oz of TV fame did a study where he measured the blood glucose levels of 10 women. Five women ate a traditional candy bar and the other five ate two slices of wheat bread. Three out of the five women who ate the wheat bread had blood glucose levels much higher than the women who ate the candy bars! The problem is that the body does not recognize wheat as food. The protein that modern wheat contains, gliadin, is addictive. It binds to receptors in the brain (like a drug) and makes us crave more junk carbs, and thus we are nutrient-deficient and overweight. A person who eats modern wheat a few times a day consumes an average 440 extra empty calories per day.

Symptoms of gluten sensitivity Knowing the symptoms of gluten sensitivity can speed up your diagnosis process, so you can start feeling better fast. Any of the following symptoms are good cause to test for gluten sensitivity and/or intolerance: • Skin rashes/itchiness • Dark circles under the eyes • Chronic exhaustion • Bloating and intestinal pain • Gas, constipation, diarrhea • Persistent mental fog • Hormonal imbalances • Chronic high blood sugar • Joint aches and pains/arthritis Gluten-free eating requires education and a bit of vigilance at first. It is important to know that wheat, oats, rye and barley contain gluten. Oats are inherently glutenfree, but since they are grown near wheat or as part of crop rotation, they are often cross-contaminated. I am a fan of the ancient forms of wheat, spelt and kamut, because they do not affect the body the way modern wheat does. Both can be found in the health food store. Food manufacturers can have many names for gluten including, but not limited to: hydrolyzed plant or vegetable protein, MSG, malt, malt flavoring, durum and semolina. However, there are many delicious whole food alternatives to choose from. With a little knowledge of what you can eat and where to find gluten-free products and recipes, you will soon adapt to this new lifestyle and will be feeling better than you thought possible. HEALTHY RETIREMENT
Chart an adventurous life path Open yourself up to new possibilities
N
orth Americans are living longer and staying healthier than previous generations, and this is creating exciting new opportunities to find purpose in the mature years. Either by choice or necessity, many people continue to work and live active lives long past the traditional retirement age.
Reflect—what works for you Start by looking inward and revisiting all the events that led you to this point. Looking forward, what is most important to you? What possibilities are you most interested in pursuing? That will allow you to say no to the things that have complicated your life and say yes to the ones that give you purpose.
It’s never “too late” to seek out new possibilities. Some may want to explore different hobbies, interests or volunteer opportunities. Other people will decide to go back to school or travel to a dream destination. Starting a business or taking a different career direction may be the chosen path for still others.
Connect—find listeners Gather a small group of trusted people (friends or family) who can help you think through the options and possible changes in your life. Once you’ve found your listeners, then you can bounce ideas off them and help clarify your own thoughts.
All these choices involve looking ahead and asking yourself, “What’s next in my life?” Here are several guidelines you can use to answer that question and navigate the latest, greatest chapter in your life.
Explore—open yourself up to the unknown Think broadly and honestly about the direction you want to take your life. Give your curiosity free rein and pursue activities that put you outside your comfort zone.
18 l VITAJOURNAL
Choose—narrow your options This may be scary to some people who think, “What if I make the wrong choice?” Remember, the choices you make today are not irreversible. You may ease your way into this stage by taking small steps. Repack—what’s needed for your new path The first step is removing the obstacles that are keeping you from reaching your goal. It means getting rid of the baggage that no longer fits and repacking to accommodate the person you want to become. Act—turn your possibilities into reality Asking for advice is fine, but ultimately you have to trust your gut instincts. When you act, doors open and new connections suddenly happen. An opportunity could open up that you never anticipated. Stepping outside your comfort zone can seem daunting at first, or exhilarating. However, your life will never be the same.

FAMILY MATTERS
This year, skip cold season
Say “no” to common winter health woes
I
f you have kids or grandkids, you know that colder weather can bring sniffles, sneezes— and much worse. Taking some simple, common-sense steps can help protect your family throughout cold and flu season. Wash your hands—for 20 seconds Hand-washing remains one of the top ways to avoid getting sick and spreading germs. Though the task seems intuitive, a Michigan State University study found that only 5 percent of the people who used a public restroom washed their hands long enough to kill germs. A whopping 10 percent didn’t wash their hands at all, and 33 percent didn’t use soap. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) states that hands should be washed for about 20 seconds
to kill germs; in the study, the average time spent on hand-washing was a measly six seconds. Everyday ways to stop sickness These everyday preventive measures from the CDC can further help stop the spread of germs—and keep kids and adults healthy all cold season long.
• Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. Throw the tissue in the trash after you use it.
• Wash your hands often with soap and water. If soap and water are unavailable, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer that contains at least 60 percent alcohol to clean hands.
• Try to avoid close contact with sick people.
• Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth. Germs spread this way.
• If you are sick with flu-like illness, stay home for at least 24 hours after your fever is gone except to get medical care or other necessities. (Your fever should be gone without the use of fever-reducing medicine.)
• Clean and disinfect surfaces and objects that may be contaminated with germs like the flu.
• While sick, limit contact with others as much as possible to keep from infecting them.

FIT FOR WELLNESS
How to keep your New Year’s fitness resolution By Jolene Goring TriVita Wellness Center Director of Fitness The VitaJournal is proud to launch this new fitness column by Jolene Goring, Fitness Director at the TriVita Wellness Center. Jolene holds professional certifications in personal training, wellness coaching and integrative nutrition, in addition to being a best-selling author. During her 18 years in the health/fitness industry, Jolene has traveled the world to help people fulfill their life purpose through fitness.
Jolene Goring is a leading health and fitness expert based in Scottsdale, AZ, and the TriVita Wellness Center Director of Fitness. Recently named one of “America’s Premier Fitness Experts,” Jolene has appeared in newspaper, television and fitness videos. She is also co-author of the best-selling fitness book, “Bigger, Better, Faster, Stronger.”
VJ: Why do you focus on being “Fit for Wellness,” as opposed to simply being fit? Jolene: The number one complaint that most of my clients have is low energy. Being “fit” means more than just looking good, it means feeling good, too! Fit for Wellness is an integrative approach that focuses on mental, emotional and spiritual wellness in addition to being physically fit. Once I can help someone get their vitality back, the rest usually just falls into place. It sounds simple and with the right guidance and a positive attitude, it actually is quite simple.
VJ: As long as someone feels okay, why should they spend time and energy on exercise? Jolene: Do you want to feel “okay,” or do you want to feel “fantastic”? Do you want to live your life in black and white, or in vibrant color? By making small changes, you can maximize your life and have more energy. Plus, you’ll give yourself the vitality and strength to do the things you want to do, the things that will help you fulfill your life purpose. Imagine having the energy every day to do the things that you truly value! Whatever fitness level you are at, it’s never too late to make some positive changes. VJ: Lots of people make New Year’s resolutions to exercise and be healthier, and then abandon them. What’s the best approach to help them keep going? Jolene: A great way to make wellness an ongoing part of your life is to think of wellness as a lifestyle, as opposed to a

Marching in place is a great way to burn off those extra holiday calories. You can hold on to a sturdy chair or counter for stability if needed. Once your fitness level increases, you can really swing your arms and get those legs marching high: you want to get your knees about hip height. This is a perfect move to do around the home, during television commercials, while brushing your teeth, cooking a meal… every bit of activity counts, so get moving!
short-term goal. Why do you want to make these changes? How will your life be different when you achieve your wellness goals? What are the consequences if you don’t achieve them? It’s about changing your attitude from “I have to go to the gym for an hour every day to be fit,” to “I can do simple things at home.” These are small movements that you can do in your own home, without any equipment. VJ: What are the pitfalls to sticking with an activity plan? Are there things we do to set ourselves up for quitting? If so, how can we set ourselves up to keep at it? Jolene: Lots of people get discouraged if they don’t stick perfectly to their plan. I highly advise talking with a fitness professional to make sure that your plan and goals are realistic. This will help to set you up for success. Don’t set an impossible “all-ornothing” standard: Be kind to yourself. If you can do only five minutes of stretching while you are making dinner for the family, pat yourself on the back for consciously adding activity to your day. Remember, when it comes to physical activity, anything is better than nothing. By shifting your mindset to a positive intention, you will associate activity with good feelings. And in the end, we all want to feel good, look good and do good! For a free consultation to help you get the New Year started right, call the TriVita Wellness Center: 480-337-4148 or 1-888-669-5036. 20 EASY WAYS TO ADD ACTIVITY INTO YOUR DAY 1. Tap your toes. Fidgeters (those who engage in constant minor activity) can burn around 100 extra calories daily! 2. Shift your weight from side to side while standing in line. 3. Walk around medical buildings if you have a long wait for a doctor’s appointment. 4. Put away your remote and change channels the old-fashioned way—get up and walk to the television. 5. Leave the grocery cart by the store exit and carry those bags to your car. 6. Do some housework: It counts as activity. 7. If your home has more than one level, use the bathroom on the floor above or below you to incorporate stair-climbing into your day. 8. Take a few minutes to stretch when you wake up in the morning and before you go to bed at night. 9. Skip the drive-through at banks, restaurants, coffee shops, etc. Park your car and walk inside. 10. Listen to music that motivates you to get moving. 11. Put daily movement reminders around the house. 12. Instead of meeting a friend for coffee, meet for a walk. 13. Play with your children, grandkids, nieces and nephews. 14. Try something new: take a ballroom dancing class or go bike-riding with a friend. 15. Clean up the garage or organize your closets or kitchen cupboards. 16. Go shopping. You don’t have to buy anything, just walk the aisles and look at the items. 17. Walk around your house while talking on the phone. 18. Bend and straighten your knees while you brush your teeth. 19. At the grocery store, walk around the entire store to compare prices and get some more steps in. 20. Marching in place (above left) during television commercials. January 2014 l 21
RESEARCH DESK Mediterranean diet good for the brain
Birmingham, AL
A Mediterranean-style diet may reduce the risk of cognitive (mental) and memory problems, according to a study at the University of Alabama, Birmingham. Using food questionnaires and mental function tests, researchers found that when healthy people adhered to a Mediterranean-style diet—fruits and veggies, whole grains, healthy fats, fish, minimal red meat—they were 19 percent less likely to experience thinking and memory problems. However, study participants who both adhered to the diet and had Type 2 diabetes did not experience the same benefits. “Diet is an important modifiable activity that could help in preserving cognitive functioning in late life,” said lead researcher Georgios Tsivgoulis, M.D. He suggested that exercise, avoiding obesity and not smoking are other lifestyle activities that may play a role in mental functioning. ............................................................................................
Skipping breakfast increases heart attack risk
Boston, MA
Men who regularly skip breakfast have a 27 percent increased risk of heart attack or death from coronary heart disease compared to men who eat breakfast, Harvard School of Public Health researchers reported. “Skipping breakfast may lead to one or more risk factors, including obesity, high blood pressure, high cholesterol and diabetes, which may in turn lead to a heart attack over time,” said lead author Leah E. Cahill. “Don’t skip breakfast. Incorporating many types of healthy foods into your breakfast is an easy way to ensure your meal provides adequate energy and a healthy balance of nutrients, such as protein, carbohydrates, vitamins and minerals. For example, adding nuts and chopped fruit to a bowl of whole grain cereal or steel-cut oatmeal in the morning is a great way to start the day.” ............................................................................................
Common chemicals linked to thyroid problem
New Taipei City, Taiwan
Chemicals commonly found in carpeting, fabrics, cosmetics and paper may cause changes in thyroid function, according to a study in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism. Using data on over 1,000 participants in the U.S. National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, researchers found that perfluorinated chemicals (PFCs) affected thyroid function in both men and women, as well as increased the risk of hypothyroidism in women. Although some of these PFCs are no longer used in manufacturing, they remain a concern for researchers, as they take a long time to break down, lingering in the body for long periods of time. “Too little information is available about the possible long-term effects these chemicals could have on human health,” said study co-author Dr. Chien-Yu Lin. 22 l VITAJOURNAL

Good Manufacturing Practices—What they mean to you Another important quality control measure from TriVita
T
he demand for safer, high quality health supplement products, combined with new FDA (Food and Drug Administration) guidelines, have raised the bar for the entire nutraceutical industry. As a result, purity testing is now a top priority for companies that are serious about product integrity. TriVita is at the forefront of this effort, and has long had processes in place to ensure the highest standards for our products. For more information about the specifics of our quality control measures, see the “Behind the Label” article on page 6 and the overview of our “10 Foundational Values” on page 34. For instance, the FDA has been ramping up enforcement of current Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) for dietary supplements. TriVita has voluntarily adhered to these practices for many years. This industry-leading commitment to quality helps guarantee that every supplement with the TriVita label is safe and effective. Specifically, the GMPs assure the identity, strength, quality and purity of nutritional supplements by requiring 1-800-991-7116
that manufacturers of medications and supplements adequately control manufacturing operations. This includes establishing strong quality management systems, obtaining appropriate quality raw materials, establishing robust operating procedures, detecting and investigating product quality deviations and maintaining reliable testing laboratories. Specific GMP measures may include identity testing of each herb and also performing a microbiological count to make sure that there are no contaminants in any product. Manufacturers are required to undergo a series of “checks and balances” throughout the entire process from concept through production to ensure quality. Extensive documentation needs to be created for every production stage. Ultimately, all these measures help reassure you, our valued Members, that every TriVita supplement meets our exacting quality control standards— and has for many years.

Guard your immune health: A “how-to” especially for colds and flu season By Claudia Harsh, M.D.
W
Dr. Claudia Harsh practices integrative gynecology and medical acupuncture at Baylor Hospital’s Integrative Medicine Center in Dallas, TX. In addition, she runs the Survivorship Program at Texas Oncology Dallas for women with gynecologic malignancies.
e live in an environment surrounded by pollen, pet dander, viruses and bacteria that have the potential to make us sick or sneezy. Our immune system chugs along, day in and day out, sorting through these exposures and fighting back when a potential threat to our health occurs. But is it me, or do we only notice our immune system when it lapses? We get a head cold or cough and then start in on the healthy routine to come back into balance. Let’s do this: let’s acknowledge the importance of our immune system in a series of lifestyle strategies that are especially important now that the winter colds and flu season has arrived. Six steps to getting stronger Here’s a checklist to help keep your immune system strong every season of the year: 1. Nutrition is key. Avoid white sugar and sweets. Grab a piece of fruit or a handful of raisins instead of cookies, cake or pie. Watch out for oil that has gone rancid (use your nose) and check expiration dates carefully on packaged and canned goods. If your body is exposed to a lot of inflammatory foods like these, your immune system is “distracted” in its efforts to protect you.
24 l VITAJOURNAL
2. Get moving. Walk 30 to 45 minutes at least three times a week. If walking hurts, try a recumbent bike or water-based therapy. Your body systems all work better when you are active—this includes your immune system! 3. Examine your exposures. Look carefully at your exposures to heavy metals like mercury (silver dental fillings or farm-raised salmon) or pesticides and other potential environmental toxins. See the Environmental Working Group’s “Dirty Dozen and Clean 15” (see next page) to get an idea which foods from commercial growers can be safely consumed, and which fruits and vegetables should only be bought from organic growers. Ask your dentist if any of your mercury amalgam fillings are old and cracked and make sure the dentist knows how to replace them safely so you aren’t exposed to mercury when they are replaced. Chemicals like these interfere with your liver’s ability to detoxify, which hampers your immune system’s ability to do its job. 4. Get your balance. Check with your healthcare provider and make sure you are on a good balance of antioxidants, essential fatty acids, electrolytes and magnesium. Be aware that everyone’s nutritional needs are unique. If you aren’t getting adequate micronutrients like these from your diet, adding nutritional supplements can be

helpful. Ask your practitioner to assess and monitor how much you need. 5. Control your stress. We know that our immune system is closely tied to our hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis, which allows us to respond to both short- and longterm stress. We also know that the strategies here can’t take all of our stress away, but we can certainly learn to cope so that we can become more resilient and less reactive to life’s stressors. 6. Sleep well. Turn off the computer monitor or the TV and start a relaxation practice. It could be deep breathing or prayer or meditation… figure out how to “unwind” so that your sleep is deep and restful. If there is a question of sleep apnea, consider getting a sleep study and assessing the quality and quantity of sleep. We know that a lot of our body’s restorative and detoxifying systems kick into gear while we are asleep. Rather than medicating with a prescription drug, explore emotional, mental, physical and spiritual aspects of your health to see if you and your practitioner can understand why you’re not sleeping well. The winter cold and flu season isn’t a problem for people who follow the guidelines here. Remember, our immune system and allow it to function optimally. That is nothing to sneeze at! 1-800-991-7116

EMOTIONAL WELLNESS
5 Steps to a happier you in 2014 By Mamiko Odegard, Ph.D.
A Dr. Mamiko Odegard is the best-selling author of “Daily Affirmations for Love: 365 Days of Love in Thought and Action”. A former psychologist and college instructor, Dr. Odegard is known as “The Love and Relationship Expert.” She is based in Scottsdale, AZ.
s we celebrate the New Year, our thoughts and good intentions often turn to simple self-improvement goals. Unfortunately, our best plans can be forgotten and tossed aside as days pass and we’ve already “failed” to execute our actions. New Year’s resolutions often make us feel inadequate and behind the eight ball. Therefore, I’ve come up with some fresh ways to think about creating happiness today and every day throughout the year. 1. Think about where you are today and cherish yourself. Instead of thinking that you must outperform and discipline yourself more, take time to acknowledge where you are in the ways you feel about yourself, your accomplishments, and the obstacles that you have overcome to get you here. 2. You are “good enough!” This doesn’t mean that you are a laggard or settling and resting on your laurels. Instead, this reminds you that you don’t have to be perfect in the ways you behave or what you accomplish each day. Good enough is okay and often commendable to avoid feeling stressed and unworthy. 3. Think about what true happiness means to you and create this. Does this really mean losing weight or is it more about feeling accepted and relaxed with yourself? Is happiness achieving a certain money

goal... or is it about the freedom to choose your lifestyle? In other words, how would your life be different if you were to achieve your goals? Is this more about how you would feel about yourself? Strive to create that happiness within you. It could even be simple pleasures such as laughing, watching a beautiful sunset, taking time to smell and touch a beautiful flower, or to hug and kiss. 4. Practice gratitude each day and count the blessings and experience the enjoyment of living in the moment. Too often we focus on what we did wrong in the past while simultaneously worrying that we will continue these same outcomes in the future, creating a self-defeating and selffulfilling prophesy. 5. Take time each day to nourish yourself with compliments, good food, rest and private time or some activity you look forward to replenish yourself each day. Remember, creating happiness is taking the very best care of yourself. You are an investment, a treasure beyond compare, and worth lavishing yourself with gentleness, nurturing and pleasure. The basic message for 2014 or any year is to start now to “ACT on LOVE” towards yourself and others each day. There are so many ways you can show and feel love... Words to treasure in the new year: The 23rd Psalm By Chaplain Donna Kafer
“ I am the good shepherd; I know my sheep and my sheep know me—just as the Father knows me and I know the Father—and I lay down my life for the sheep.” —John 10:14–15
W
e’ve read it many times; it’s beautiful to hear it spoken. But how often do we really reflect on the deeper meaning of this famous 23rd Psalm? As we start a new year, let’s consider the comfort these six verses offer: 1. The Lord is my Shepherd, I shall not want. Our Father in heaven is with us always, providing for our needs. 2. He makes me lie down in green pastures; He leads me beside the still waters. The shepherd always goes before the sheep to make sure the water isn’t being stirred up by predators that may be lurking, hidden behind the brush. If the water is still, then it is safe for the flock to approach and drink their fill unharmed. The Lord, our God does the same thing in our lives, allowing us to be refreshed in His presence without fear or apprehension.
Him, He delights in us and He seeks to draw us to Him. 4. Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil; For You are with me; Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me. The Lord is with us, even when we have descended into a valley and are engulfed in the shadow of death. Our Father also uses His rod to gently guide us into the ways we should go, tapping ever so slightly to urge us onward in His care. The staff, the crooked end of the rod, is used to pull us back to safety if we stray. Our comfort is knowing that He lovingly cares and watches over us. 5. You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; You anoint my head with oil; My cup runs over. The Lord is preparing a table of honor for us because we are His own. He has anointed our head with the oil of blessing, filling our cup, our lives, with goodness and mercy.
Donna Kafer, TriVita’s chaplain, has served as chaplain to the Arizona State Legislature for 16 years. In addition, Donna is a motivational speaker and author. She has written two books, and now has a third book in progress.
6. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life; And I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever. Our greatest treasure is the enduring promise of eternal life and because of this, we can embrace His joy in confident assurance that we will be with Him forever and ever.
3. He restores my soul; He leads me in the paths of righteousness For His name’s sake. It is God’s good pleasure to restore us to 1-800-991-7116

Boost your
winter skin regimen Simple suggestions for avoiding dry skin
T
he upcoming winter months will bring more than a rosy glow to many people’s cheeks. The colder weather may also cause uncomfortable dryness to the skin of the face, hands and feet. The problem is worse than just a general tight, dry feeling for some people. Their skin gets so dry it results in flaking, cracking and even flare-ups of eczema (inflammation of the skin). The main culprit is often indoor heat, which can cause skin to dry out. Follow these tips for healthy, supple skin: Moisturize more. Running the heater can cause very dry inside air. Also, going outside in the cold air and winter wind can lead to chapping. Your skin will be starved for moisture, so be sure to moisturize in the morning, after your
shower when your pores are open. Don’t forget your hands, where the skin is thinner and you have fewer oil glands. Maintain year-round sun protection. Sunscreen isn’t just for summertime. Winter sun can still damage your skin, so apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen to your face and hands about 30 minutes before going outside. Hydrate for health. Drinking water helps your skin stay young looking all year long. It’s so important that it’s number 2 in our “10 Essentials for Health and Wellness” (see page 2). Hook up the humidifier. Central heating systems often blast hot dry air throughout homes and offices. Humidifiers will help push more
moisture in the air which prevents skin from drying out. Avoid super-hot baths and showers. The intense heat of a hot shower or bath actually breaks down the fat (oil) barriers of the skin, which can lead to a loss of moisture. Two solutions: use warm water and stay in the water a shorter time. Add fats to your diet. Increasing your intake of Omega-3s will help combat dryness from the inside out.
Tip from the editor In the dry winter months, I keep a spray bottle full of extra light olive oil in my shower. After I pat down with a towel, I mix my body lotion with a few squirts of olive oil and use all over my body (except my face). My skin feels so much more moist throughout the day!

The “real story” behind
health headlines Observational studies. In these studies, scientists track a group of people for several years. By looking at what the people have in common, as well as how they’re different, scientists can find clues about who develops a disease and who doesn’t. That learning can suggest new areas of research.
Risk isn’t a prediction that something bad will happen: it’s the chance that something bad will happen, like catching the flu. Look at that headline about Medicine X, for example: does “increases risk of stroke 50 percent” mean that half of the people taking the drug will have a stroke? No.
Randomized controlled clinical trial. To find out if a certain drug might work on people, scientists set up a clinical trial. They recruit volunteers (possibly thousands) who are assigned to groups by chance (randomized). For each group getting the drug, there is a control group that gets a sugar pill.
As the Institute on Aging explains it, start by assuming that in every 1,000 people who aren’t taking Medicine X, two will have a stroke. A 50 percent increase means that just one more person (a total of 3 out of 1,000) will have a stroke while taking Medicine X. While stroke can be devastating and even fatal, three out of 1,000 doesn’t sound nearly as scary as 50 percent. If Medicine X might help your health issue, you might consider that risk acceptable.
The next time you see a health headline that concerns (or cheers) you, read the whole story. Then ask your healthcare provider to help you understand what the results may mean to you.

Why detoxifying is essential to wellness Even newborns can be carrying environmental impurities
By Lacramioara Burlacu, M.D.

oxins and wastes surround us: they come from our own metabolism, from our environment, from our food, from the air we breathe and from various drugs and medicines. In response to these “intrusions,” the body reacts with a process of cleansing that involves the kidneys, liver, intestines, skin and lungs. There’s a lot you can do to help your body cleanse, and therefore to help you enjoy better health. The first question is, who needs a cleansing? Individual needs vary, of course, but you might be surprised to learn that even newborn infants can carry toxins. Studies have revealed that more than 20 unwanted chemicals have been identified from umbilical cord cells collected from newborn babies. This data shows that nobody is protected enough—even in the womb. We are all affected by environmental chemicals. The first step: healthy eating What can we do? Where should we start? The best first step is to make healthy dietary choices; this is a good long-term investment in our own health and it applies to everyone. I’m not talking about a diet to lose weight, but a diet for life, comprised of the elements you already know: fruits and vegetables, lean protein, whole grains and lots of water. For many people, undergoing a detoxification, or cleansing program from time to time, is the answer to concerns about internal

pollutants. Be sure to consult your healthcare provider before undertaking a cleanse. There are a variety of programs and products available to help us shed toxins and waste. What most of the programs have in common are physical rest, good-quality food, herbal and nutritional support, exercise, massage, breathing techniques and the use of saunas. While conventional medicine may not see the value of cleansing, as a physician I say there is no reason not to take it seriously. We can carry chemicals like organic pollutants, cadmium, aluminum, copper, arsenic, lead and mercury in our bodies. At the same time, we may lack essential minerals because of our imbalanced, “Western,” fast-food-based diets. You’ll even store less fat You may see and feel the benefits of cleansing in several ways. When you get the essential nutrients you need through healthy eating and high-quality supplements, the body will crave fewer calories. So, you’ll actually have less fat being stored, and fewer places for toxins to “live” (fat tissue acts like a warehouse for pollutants). So to feel better and enjoy greater wellness (and maybe even be leaner), consider the benefits of detoxifying. You could be giving your body a fresh, clean start.

T
he U.S. Centers for Disease Control (CDC) tracks statistics on the hazards of overweight and obesity in the U.S., and the news isn’t good:
• More than one-third of U.S. adults (35.7 percent) are obese. (Overweight and obesity ranges are determined by using weight and height to calculate a number called the “body mass index” (BMI). For most people, BMI reflects the amount of body fat).
• Some of the leading causes of preventable death are related to obesity, including heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes and certain types of cancer.
• Each year, obese Americans face medical costs about $1,400 higher than those of normal weight.
• The estimated annual medical cost of obesity in the U.S. is about $147 billion. Finding your body mass index isn’t the only way to determine your weight classification. Another technique is waist circumference. If most of your fat is around your waist rather than at your hips, you’re at a higher risk for heart disease and Type 2 diabetes. There is some good news, however: even a small weight loss (between 5–10 percent of your current weight) will help lower your risk of developing diseases linked to obesity.

riVita is partnering with the National Geographic Society to support a program for sustainability of the Amazon Rainforest. For two weeks in June, ACEER (Amazon Center for Environmental Education and Research) will lead an “immersive experience” in the Rainforest of the Amazon Basin as well as the Sacred Valley of Peru. The purpose: to help educate and connect people from many fields and countries, including delegates from South America. “Making a difference is everybody’s job” “There are so many different challenges in the world today that we can get lulled into thinking that ‘someone else’ is taking care of environmental issues,” says Roger Mustalish, Ph.D., president of the ACEER Board of Directors. ACEER is dedicated to supporting and promoting conservation of the Peruvian Amazon. “If we’re going to have a sustainable planet,” says Dr. Mustalish, “It will take every single individual making some choice—whether to buy products sourced in the Amazon, or to help people understand the connectedness of the Amazon to people in North America. Making a difference is everybody’s job, everybody’s opportunity.”

TriVita gives back in partnership for Rainforest sustainability
“We have supported indigenous peoples by drilling water wells, supporting programs for food and clothing and now, promoting greater awareness of the importance of sustainability for the Rainforests.” The Rainforest is the source of the ingredients in Zamu Gold™, TriVita’s daily defense product, among others. That’s why TriVita is helping to bring together people who share a passion for making the world more sustainable. In Peru’s male-dominated society, many women are marginalized, according to Dr. Mustalish. That’s why part of the objective of the Institute for Emerging Leaders in Sustainability is to explore the opportunities to empower and acknowledge women, from villagers to businesswomen and government officials in Lima, Peru’s capital city.
The special event, titled the “Institute for Emerging Leaders in Sustainability: The Role of Women in Sustainability,” will take place June 1–13, 2014. Funding for the Institute is provided by TriVita and National Geographic.
“We’re accepting applications from both men and women in the early to mid-stages of careers or studies in science, education, business, healthcare and government who have a clear commitment toward being a part of the solution around the broad issue of sustainability,” says Institute Facilitator Joy Taylor. The Institute hopes that those who experience the event will go on to create networks to spread awareness of the Rainforest.
“We have always looked for ways to give back to the regions of the world where we source ingredients for our wellness products,” says TriVita Founder Michael Ellison.
For more information about the Institute, visit the ACEER Workshops page at wcupa.edu/aceer/workshops.asp, or call the ACEER U.S. headquarters at 610-738-0477.
