t TriVita, we’re committed to helping you be the best you can be. To help you feel your best with the vitality and energy to do those things you love to do, we’re featuring TriVita’s Sublingual B-12 at special pricing this month. This is one of the most important and rewarding vitamin supplements TriVita offers to help you feel and be your best—so it’s a great time to stock up!

As a person ages, the body does not always absorb this essential vitamin as easily because of changes in the digestive system. With the sublingual delivery system, tablets can be placed under the tongue and be more directly absorbed into the bloodstream. In addition to the B-12 information you’ll find in this issue of the VitaJournal, I encourage you to do research to learn more about how important this essential vitamin is to your wellness. You may conclude it is one of the most important vitamins to your overall health when you read about everything it does to promote a healthy body and the serious consequences of a B-12 deficiency. According to the U.S. National Institutes of Health, those at potential risk of B-12 deficiency include people over age 50, vegetarians and vegans, and people with digestive issues, intestinal disorders or low levels of stomach acidity. Through July 31, you can enjoy TriVita’s Sublingual B-12 for 20% off. That means for less than a cup of coffee per day, you can experience the benefits of TriVita’s Sublingual B-12. Our Members love this product and it gives me such great satisfaction when they share their testimonies with us of their improved quality of life. I encourage you to try this popular product and see how it may enhance how you feel. May you pursue wellness with passion!

ASK THE DOCTOR

Q: What are the signs of B-12 deficiency? By Scott Conard, M.D.

A:

Vitamin B-12’s vital role in human health—it helps keep nerve and blood cells healthy and plays a role in DNA creation—means that a deficiency may seriously damage your health. Watch for these signs of low Vitamin B-12 levels1:

Scott Conard, M.D., DABFM, FAAFP, has more than 20 years of successful clinical practice, research and leadership experience. Through his Texasbased practice and books he’s authored, he empowers people to take control of their health.

• Fatigue • Fainting • Pale skin • Anaemia • Weakness • Vision loss • Dementia • Hallucinations • Heart palpitations • Shortness of breath • Tingling of the hands and feet However, it’s important to note that people may have low B-12 levels and not exhibit these symptoms.

Who is at risk? As I have written before, anyone over 40 may be at risk. As we age, our body’s ability to absorb B-12 from food decreases. Other factors that can increase your risk of Vitamin B-12 deficiency include veganism, vegetarianism, pernicious anaemia, celiac or Crohn’s disease, and gastrointestinal surgery. Medications such as proton pump inhibitors, histamine H2 receptor antagonists, the antibiotic chloramphenical and the diabetes drug metformin can also interfere with Vitamin B-12 absorption.

“B” proactive with your health Because so many of us are at risk for low B-12 levels, it’s critical that we get enough of this vital nutrient—and to make sure it’s properly absorbed by the body. This makes a high-quality, sublingual form of Vitamin B-12 an important addition to a balanced, healthy diet.   This article is intended for educational purposes only. RESEARCH DESK One in four Australians Vitamin D deficient Belconnen, ACT, AUS

One in four Australian adults (23%) is deficient in Vitamin D, according to data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS). However, of those with a deficiency, only 1% had a severe deficiency. ABS reported that during summer months, deficiency levels were relatively low across all States and Territories; in the winter months, deficiency levels were high in the south eastern states of Victoria, ACT and Tasmania but remained low in the northern states of Queensland and the Northern Territory.1 ............................................................

Mediterranean Diet linked to lower inflammation markers Washington, DC, USA The Mediterranean Diet—typically consisting of fish, fruits and vegetables, whole grains and olive oil—is linked with a reduction in two specific markers of inflammation. Researchers in the journal Blood found that study participants who most closely adhered to the Mediterranean Diet had lower levels of platelets and white blood cells. When they tried to pinpoint specific nutrients linked to the decreases, they found that the diet as a whole was likely responsible for the beneficial effects.2 ............................................................

Exercise helps with work-life balance   Saint Leo, FL, USA

Exercise can help keep stress levels down and increase confidence, in turn helping people balance their work and home lives, say researchers from Saint Leo University. After surveying 476 working adults, the scientists found that those who exercised regularly felt increased levels of competence that carried over into their work and home lives. The participants worked an average 40 hours a week, with an average age of 41. About 29% had at least one child under 18 living in their home.3 ............................................................

BEHIND THE LABEL

Why TriVita Sublingual B-12 stands out By Esmeralda Garcia, TriVita Formulation Scientist

J

ust as people may take Vitamin B-12 supplements for many reasons, there are many reasons to trust the quality, purity and potency of TriVita Sublingual B-12.

Esmeralda Garcia is TriVita’s Formulation Scientist, charged with ensuring that only the highest quality ingredients go into TriVita products. She holds a Master’s Degree in Applied Biosciences from the University of Arizona, USA, and has over five years’ experience in research and development and quality control for over-the-counter products and nutraceuticals.

Dietary ingredient standards and testing First, our dietary ingredients (in this case, B-12, B-6, folate and others) are sourced only by manufacturers that have cGMP (current Good Manufacturing Practices) certification for manufacturing dietary supplements. This means before they are used in production these ingredients must be tested and meet valid scientific standards, such as those of the USP (United States Pharmacopeia), a wellestablished scientific group that creates standards for both prescription drug and dietary supplement ingredients. Manufacturing quality During production, there’s “traceability” of the ingredient. This allows our manufacturers to track the ingredient through the production process, to be certain the ingredient wasn’t contaminated or weakened in any way. Our certified manufacturers are required to create records for every “batch” of product. Batch records allow our manufacturers to document,

track, and control production steps, like identifying and accurately weighing out each ingredient used in production. Finished product & packaging Do the Sublingual B-12 tablets dissolve correctly? Are the active ingredients present in the labeled amounts? Is the blister card perforated so that you can easily peel off and take one or two tablets on the go? Is the outer shrinkwrapping applied to assure the product has not been tampered with? All of these questions and more must have “yes” answers, or the product will be rejected. There are even more extras in every box of TriVita Sublingual B-12:

• Vegetarian/vegan. • Naturally sweetened with stevia.

• Natural flavours, no

preservatives, no artificial colours or needless “fillers.”

When you choose TriVita Sublingual B-12, you’re getting exactly what you pay for… plus a whole boxful of priceless quality.

INFLAMMATION UPDATE

Healthy

Is C-reactive protein testing necessary?

Unhealthy

Several major studies say “yes”

R

ecent research indicates that high levels of C-reactive protein (CRP) can lead to heart disease. Equally important: Inflammation (swelling of the arteries) has been linked to an increased risk of heart disease, heart attack, stroke and peripheral arterial disease. Many people are unaware that doctors can test blood for CRP. The body produces CRP during the ongoing process of inflammation. That makes CRP a “marker” for inflammation, and its presence shows an increased state of inflammation in the body. Two major studies indicate that CRP levels indicate levels of heart disease risk. In fact, CRP seems to predict cardiovascular risk as reliably as cholesterol levels. Results from the Physicians Health Study, a clinical trial involving 18,000 healthy doctors, found that elevated levels of CRP were associated with a threefold increase in heart attack risk.1 The Harvard Women’s Study (USA) was equally revealing. It showed that CRP test results were more accurate than cholesterol levels in predicting heart problems.2 Twelve different markers of inflammation were studied in healthy postmenopausal women. Three years later, CRP was the strongest predictor of risk. Women with the highest CRP levels were more than four times as likely to have died from coronary disease, or have suffered a non-fatal heart attack or stroke, compared to women with the lowest levels. References: 1 “Heart Disease and C-Reactive Protein (CRP) Testing.” 2012. Retrieved from: http://www.webmd.com/heartdisease/guide/heart-disease-c-reactive-protein-crp-testing 2 “C-reactive protein levels linked to health problems.” January 30, 3003. Harvard University Gazette. Retrieved from: http://www.news.harvard.edu/gazette/2003/01.30/16-crp.html

Measuring C-reactive protein

CRP levels are measured with a simple blood test which can be done at the same time your cholesterol is checked. Heart disease risk is determined by these test results: CRP

Risk for Cardiovascular Disease

Less than 1.0 mg/L

Low

1.0-2.9 mg/L

Intermediate

Greater than 3.0 mg/L

High

Inflammation can flare up from other conditions, including infection, illness or arthritis. Make sure to tell your healthcare provider about any existing medical conditions before getting the CRP test.

Who should be tested for CRP?

CRP testing is suggested for people with the following heart disease risk factors:

• A previous heart attack or stroke • A family history of heart disease • Elevated total and LDL “bad” cholesterol levels

• Low HDL “good” cholesterol level • High blood pressure • Cigarette smoker • Uncontrolled diabetes or high blood pressure

• Physical inactivity • Obesity or being overweight

ASK THE DOCTOR

Is your body old before its time? Normal aging—and warning signs to watch for By Michael Radulescu, M.D.

D

o you sometimes have shortness of breath, cold hands and feet due to poor circulation, skin wrinkling, bad balance and poor sleep? Symptoms like these signal changes we may expect as we age. But some signs of aging are premature. When they show up, it’s time to look for the causes and address the problem.

Problem: Poor diet

Poor nutrition is one of the obvious causes of premature aging. Studies are continually demonstrating that we are what we eat.

Solution: Good nutrition is the number one solution Michael Radulescu, M.D., is in private practice in New South Wales, AUS, after working in emergency medicine for several years. His specialty areas are cardiology, diabetes and neurology.

recommended by health experts to prevent and treat premature aging. A diet that is rich in antioxidants is a natural and easy approach to premature aging that can greatly affect the way you look and feel.

Problem: Chronic stress

Living constantly under stress can leave marks on your skin and body and make you look much older than you really are. When the body is under chronic stress, stress hormones are constantly released and this can have a negative effect on the skin.

Solution: Learn positive ways to deal with stress, and you

can slow down or even prevent problems that often come with getting older. This article is intended for educational purposes only.

Problem: Inactivity

Premature aging also results in muscle loss, and without a regular regimen of exercise, muscles are lost much faster. Exercise also produces energy and increases stamina. Without regular exercise and movement, the body begins to lose energy and strength.

Solution: Get moving with activities you enjoy, as recommended by your physician.

Problem: Aging skin

Skin damage from outdoor sun bathing, indoor tanning and unprotected sun exposure when outdoors is clinically known as 10 l VITAJOURNAL TriVita.com

photo aging and can lead to freckling, spider veins on the face, age spots, leathery skin, wrinkles and, most seriously, skin cancer.

arolyn C. Gilles, M.D., FAAFP H is the TriVita Wellness Center Physician and the medical leader of the Weight Loss for Wellness program at the fully-licensed Wellness Center. Dr. Gilles has special expertise in weight management and hormonal balance with bioidentical hormones, and has won the “Best of Scottsdale, Physicians and Surgeons” award for five years running.

Solution: The best solution for preventing skin

damage from the sun is to apply sunscreen 30 minutes before going outdoors.

Problem: Smoking, drinking and drug use

Smoking cigarettes, drinking alcohol excessively and using drugs cause biochemical changes. They increase the number of free radicals (unstable molecules) in our cells, which in turn can accelerate the aging process.

Solution: The only solution to these causes of

premature aging is to stop taking these poisons and get busy on achieving good health through proper diet and exercise.

Problem: Poor sleep

Sleep deprivation noticeably ages a person with puffiness of the face, dark circles and bags under the eyes and pale skin. Sleep loss also causes the body to produce reduced amounts of human growth hormone that increases muscle mass and strengthens bone.

Solution: Good, restorative sleep is essential to

physical health and emotional well-being. If you are noticing that your lack of sleep is affecting your daytime activities, talk with your doctor. The bottom line about preventing premature aging is to watch for warning signs as you age and be able to differentiate between what is normal aging and what is not. And even if we have not yet found a way to cheat the natural aging process, what we can do is prevent and treat many causes of premature aging through a healthy lifestyle. 1800-257-538

Is your immune system making you worried?

AMAZON HERBS FOR PURITY & QUALITY

Study links anxiety, inflammation with stress response

A

new study from The Ohio State University in Columbus, OH, USA, found that the effects of chronic stress can be traced to genes and the immune system. The research team, headed by Prof. John Sheridan, tested mice to see what happens when they’re subjected to chronic, long-term stress. Cells armed for a non-existent emergency Chronic stress changes gene activity in immune cells before they reach the bloodstream, according to the study, published in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. The cells then arm themselves for a “fight-or-flight” emergency that doesn’t exist. In turn, that creates inflammation, which is linked to many health problems. To see if the research applies to humans, colleagues of Prof. Sheridan tested blood samples from people living in poor socioeconomic conditions. Under the chronic stress of their environments, the people’s immune cells were similar to those of the mice: they were always primed for a crisis. The Ohio State study adds to a growing body of research pointing to chronic stress— and the chronic inflammation it produces— as increasing the risk for heart diseases, diabetes, obesity and other serious health issues. THE DOCTOR IS IN

Guard your immune health: A “how-to” especially for colds and flu season By Claudia Harsh, M.D.

W

e live in an environment surrounded by pollen, pet dander, viruses and bacteria that have the potential to make us sick or sneezy. Our immune system chugs along, day in and day out, sorting through these exposures and fighting back when a potential threat to our health occurs. But is it me, or do we only notice our immune system when it lapses? We get a head cold or cough and then start in on the healthy routine to come back into balance.

Dr. Claudia Harsh practices integrative gynecology and medical acupuncture at Baylor Hospital’s Integrative Medicine Center in Dallas, TX, USA. In addition, she runs the Survivorship Program at Texas Oncology Dallas for women with gynecologic malignancies.

Let’s do this: let’s acknowledge the importance of our immune system in a series of lifestyle strategies that are especially important now that the winter colds and flu season has arrived.

Six steps to getting stronger Here’s a checklist to help keep your immune system strong every season of the year:

1. Nutrition is key. Avoid white sugar and sweets. Grab a piece of fruit or a handful of raisins instead of cookies, cake or pie. Watch out for oil that has gone rancid (use your nose) and check expiration dates carefully on packaged and canned goods. If your body is exposed to a lot of inflammatory foods like these, your immune system is “distracted” in its efforts to protect you.

2. Get moving. Walk 30 to 45 minutes at least three times a week. If walking hurts, try a recumbent bike or water-based therapy. Your body systems all work better when you are active—this includes your immune system!

3. Examine your exposures. Look carefully at your exposures to heavy metals like mercury (silver dental fillings or farm-raised salmon) or pesticides and other potential environmental toxins.

4. Get your balance. Check with your healthcare provider and make sure you are on a good balance of antioxidants, essential

Providing you with the health products you need to achieve greater wellness is a tremendous responsibility—it’s one we take very seriously. That’s why we developed, and rigorously follow, a strict adherence to a code of quality, integrity and innovation. It’s called our 10 Foundational Values and it means you’re assured of getting the best product experience in 10 indispensable ways:

1. Scientifically Validated Formulas

Our medical board uses their extensive health and nutrition knowledge to review proprietary TriVita supplements based on the latest scientific research and the health and wellness concerns of our Members.

2. Unique Delivery Systems

Unlike other supplements that can be difficult to absorb, TriVita supplements are developed for better absorption and effect.

3. Controlled Laboratory Studies

Signature products from TriVita undergo medical studies and trials at accredited university medical centers and laboratories to ensure their effectiveness.

fatty acids, electrolytes and magnesium. If you aren’t getting adequate micronutrients like these from your diet, adding nutritional supplements can be helpful. Ask your practitioner to assess and monitor how much you need.

5. Control your stress. We know that our immune system is closely tied to our hypothalamic-pituitaryadrenal axis, which allows us to respond to both shortand long-term stress. We also know that the strategies here can’t take all of our stress away, but we can certainly learn to cope so that we can become more resilient and less reactive to life’s stressors.

6. Sleep well. Turn off the computer monitor or the TV and start a relaxation practice. It could be deep breathing or prayer or meditation… figure out how to “unwind” so that your sleep is deep and restful. We know that a lot of our body’s restorative and detoxifying systems kick into gear while we are asleep. The winter cold and flu season isn’t a problem for people who follow the guidelines here. Remember our immune system and allow it to function optimally. That is nothing to sneeze at! This article is intended for educational purposes only.
