Spectacular Science in Store at Neutrino Day

Let’s celebrate science and shed some light on dark matter. SDPB joins the fun for the sixth annual Neutrino Day science festival in Lead on Saturday, July 13. Stop by the free festival for amazing experiments by SDPB’s “Science Steve” Rokusek and “Something to Sneeze About” for SDPB’s Neutrino Day Science Café. The science extravaganza begins on Friday, July 12, with a special presentation on SDPB Radio’s Dakota Midday Innovation at Noon (11 MT)from nearly a mile underground at the Sanford Underground Research Facility. On Saturday, July 13, the Sanford Lab hosts the science celebration from 8am to 4pm in downtown Lead and at the research facility at the former Homestake Mine. At Homestake, visitors will discover the science around them with Science Steve; video chat with scientists about dark matter experiments a mile underground; and tour the Homestake hoist room. Downtown, at noon, South Dakota Epidemiologist Lon Kightlinger will share hot health topics at SDPB’s Science Café at the Bumpin’ Buffalo restaurant (doors open at 11). Emmy-nominated astronomer/ experimental photographer and filmmaker José Francisco Salgado of Chicago’s Adler planetarium keynotes the festival at 3 p.m. at the Historic Homestake Opera House downtown. Salgado will blend science with art to showcase his planetarium show on dark matter, as well as other artistic projects. Visitors will be able to take a shuttle from the Homestake Visitor Center to the Lab and other venues in the Northern Black Hills city. Other highlights include: • An art show, “Into the Dark: Art Exploring Dark Matter,” featuring 20 South Dakota painters, sculptors and photographers at the Lead Deadwood Art Center. • “Biofuels and Deep Life” at 9:30 a.m. at the Opera House. South Dakota School of Mines and Technology biologist Rajesh Sani will explain how organisms deep underground at the Sanford Lab could help make fuel.

“Dark Matter at the Sanford Lab” at 1:30 p.m. at the Opera House. Program Looks at Energy Use, Issues SDPB Radio: Thursday, July 4, Noon (11 MT) BurnAnEnergyJournal.com

It is the fundamental issue of our time: Energy; where we get it; how we use it; what happens then. It powers our homes and our economy; it creates troubled alliances and disturbing divisions; it empowers and impoverishes; it enables almost all that we do and now threatens all that we have become. BURN: An Energy Journal will explore our energy future through the stories of researchers, inventors, industry insiders and concerned

citizens on SDPB Radio on Thursday, July 4, at Noon (11 MT). These stories will help explain how and why we face an energy crisis, the dilemma of the continuing demand for energy, the realities and consequences of a mostly carbon-based industry and infrastructure. The program also examines some possible alternatives and personal/global solutions to what looks increasingly to be an ever more grim energy and climate future in the coming decades. Alex Chadwick hosts. July 2013 19

John T. Vucurevich Foundation Backs Neutrino Day A grant from the John T. Vucurevich Foundation makes SDPB’s participation in Neutrino Day possible (see page 3). Thank you. SDPB will participate in the annual Sanford Underground Research Facility science celebration with a radio program and webcast from nearly a mile underground on Friday, July 12, and amazing science demonstrations and a Science Café during the event on Saturday, July 13.
