GIANTS IN THE EARTH
The Norwegians in the Dakota Territory
APRIL 26 at 7:30 PM & APRIL 27 at 2:30 PM
The South Dakota Symphony Orchestra and Chorus, conducted by Maestro Delta David Gier, revive Douglas Moore’s Pulitzer Prize-winning opera inspired by Ole Edvart Rølvaags epic novel about Norwegian settlers of the Dakota Territory in 1873. Staged with imagery and costumes, sung in English.
This performance marks the centennial of Rølvaag’s novel on which the opera is based.
The story takes place in South Dakota, very near Sioux Falls.
In no opera by an American is there music of such freshness, beauty and distinctive character.
The opera features 10 singers and the South Dakota Symphony Orchestra Chorus.

Join SDPB as we take a ride on the most scenic railway of the Black Hills. From Edgemont to Deadwood, this stretch of the Chicago, Burlington & Quincy/Burlington Northern was very unique. Featuring neverbefore-seen interviews from 20 years ago, listen to stories from its formation, and what it's transformed into today.
