Learn. Dream. Grow.

Happy Birthday, SDPB Radio! On May 27, 1922, the University of South Dakota received word from the Federal Radio Commission that their experimental station was being upgraded and assigned the call letters WEAJ-AM. This was the realization of a dream for student Ernest O. Lawrence, Announcers pose next to KUSD Radio who would later win the microphone circa 1935. Nobel Prize for Physics in 1939. Ernest had dabbled in radio since his teen years growing up in Canton, S.D. By the time he arrived at USD, he was an experienced “radio telegrapher” and engineer, and in 1919, he set up an experimental radio station with his mentor, Professor Lewis Akeley. It was a major milestone when seven days earlier, on May 20, 1922, the University radio station broadcast its first voice and music program. This program was a quartet accompanied by piano and originated on the stage in Old Main. Until then, all programming had consisted of the dots and dashes of Morse Code. Turning on a radio set and hearing a voice and music coming through was something akin to magic, and it let loose the imaginations of student engineers, performers and listeners alike. At the time, the transmitter was located in the Engineering Department in Science Hall (long since demolished), and the antenna was a long wire that ran from a mast on Science Hall to one on the Pardee Labs Chemistry building. There was no permanent studio to begin with and the radio equipment was shuffled from room to room in Science Hall and Old Main. Such was the birth of what is now South Dakota Public Broadcasting. Soon after its first voice broadcasts, professors embraced the technology and within 10 years, a formal series of programs titled “School of the Air” were being presented. For Depression-era citizens, the radio became a lifeline for information and a source of inexpensive entertainment. Each month since last June, this space has been dedicated to the history of SDPB as we observed the 50th anniversary of SDPB TV (July 5, 1961) and the 90th anniversary of SDPB Radio. This month, we celebrate the visionaries who established and grew SDPB to what it is today, and the people who kept it going as students, employees and donors. We stand on your shoulders. Thank you. SDPB Radio Celebrates 90 Years

In May, SDPB Radio celebrates 90 years of broadcasting. On May 27, 1922, University of South Dakota student E.O. Lawrence (who later went on to split the atom and earn the Nobel Prize in Physics) and Lewis Akeley, a professor at USD, put public radio station WEAJ-AM on the air. SDPB traces its roots to that radio station – one of the first in South Dakota. Today, SDPB Radio covers the state with 10 full power transmitters and 9 translators (low power transmitters). An 11th fullpower transmitter will begin operation in the near future. SDPB Radio is available to 95 percent of the state, and online livestreaming and archives expand the reach to users of computers and mobile devices. The network started as small separate university stations. From 1967 until 1984, the SDPB Radio network consisted of just 3 stations – KUSD-AM (now silent), KUSD-FM and KESD-FM, covering a small portion of the state around the communities of Vermillion (University of South Dakota) and Brookings (South Dakota State University). During those years, the SDPB Television network was developed and built, keeping in mind plans to expand radio service across the state. Those plans came to fruition in 1984 when KTSD-FM (Reliance), KBHE-FM (Rapid City) and KDSD-FM (Pierpont) were built and added to the radio network, giving it statewide reach. Over the next few

E.O. Lawrence

years, more stations were added: KCSD-FM (Sioux Falls) in 1985, KQSD-FM (Lowry) in 1988, KPSD-FM (Faith) in 1989 and KZSD-FM (Martin/Long Valley) in 1991. KYSD-FM signed on in late 2010 and serves Spearfish and the northern Black Hills. KJSD-FM (South Shore) comes aboard this spring (see story below). From the beginning, the focus has been service to the listeners. Today, SDPB Radio offers a mix of music, news, talk, entertainment and information 24/7, with some 42 hours of locally produced programming every week. The service we provide – quality programming every day – is supported by the listeners: members of the Friends of SDPB. Thank you.

New Transmitter Covers Watertown, Milbank SDPB Radio will be coming in crystal clear this spring in the Watertown-Milbank area. SDPB Radio’s newest transmitter – KJSD-FM at 90.3 – is expected to be up and running by, tenatively, May 17. KJSD is the network’s 11th full-power transmitter in the state. The new transmitter, located near South Shore, will serve the Watertown and Milbank regions and the Lakes Area. The Friends of SDPB have been raising funds over the past five months to help provide funding for the transmitter, raising more than $30,000. The remainder of the

costs come from SDPB’s budget. “This is a true indication not only of the power of public radio, but also the generosity of the people of Northeastern South Dakota,” said Carol Johnson of Watertown. “We thank every individual and business that recognized the importance of this project,” said Tom Pagel of Milbank. Johnson and Pagel, both board members of Friends of SDPB, led the fund-raising campaign. Donations still are accepted. Call Friends of SDPB at 800-333-0789 or go to the web at SDPB.org/Watertown. Kids and listeners of all ages have a chance to learn more about classical music when SDPB1 Television presents South Dakota Symphony Orchestra Presents the Young People’s Concert: Maurice Ravel’s Suite from Ma Mere L’oye (Mother Goose). The concert offers a lesson in the way classical music tells a story and invokes

action and emotional impact. It will help children, and adults who are not familiar with classical music, appreciate the art. Via SDPB Television, it will reach children statewide. The concert was taped on Feb. 27. May 2012

SDPB Pays Tribute to Memorial Day

Sherlock Takes on 3 New Mysteries

Actors Joe Mantegna and Gary Sinise host the National Memorial Day Concert 2012.

Our oh-so-eccentric 21st century Sherlock is back with three new mysterys. Sherlock, Series 2 airs at 8pm (7 MT) on Sundays May 6, 13, and 20. Benedict Cumberbatch returns as a young, odd and slightly goth modern version of Sherlock Holmes with Martin Freeman as action-hero Dr. John Watson, and Andrew Scott as the mastermind of evil, Jim Moriarty. The first three Sherlock mysteries were called “wonderfully weird” (Wall Street Journal), “unabashedly entertaining” (USA Today), and “tremendously clever” (Entertainment Weekly). The new series introduces Irene Adler, the only woman who ever kindled the embers of passion in Holmes; and remakes three classic whodunits.

The Hounds of Baskerville, Sunday, May 13 Sherlock and Watson pursue the trail of the Baskerville experiments – topsecret government research on genetically engineered gigantic animals for military use. Or so it is rumored. Whatever the truth, something big is up on the moors.

Scandal in Belgravia, Sunday, May 6 Picking up from last season’s gripping cliff-hanger, Sherlock and Watson are plunged into a case of blackmail involving crafty dominatrix Irene Adler, whose motto is “know when you are beaten.” It seems she has incriminating photos of a session with a British royal. Can she outsmart Sherlock at his own game – and at a battle he is ill prepared to wage: love?

The Reichenbach Fall, Sunday, May 20 In what may be the climatic case of his career, Sherlock faces Moriarty’s diabolical plot to “get Sherlock,” which begins innocently enough when the criminal mastermind breaks into the Crown Jewels. As the scheme unfolds, Moriarty poses the “final problem,” and a tabloid reporter reveals a “shocking truth” about the great detective.

The National Memorial Day Concert 2012 will pay tribute to those who have sacrificed for our country in the armed forces. The annual televised concert will be offered live on SDPB1 Television on Sunday, May 27, at 7pm (6 MT), immediately followed by an encore at 8:30pm (7:30 MT). As co-hosts, actors Gary Sinise and Joe Mantegna will lead a night of remembrance featuring an all-star line-up of dignitaries, actors and musical artists in performance with the National Symphony Orchestra. The 23rd annual broadcast of the concert airs live from the West Lawn of the U.S. Capitol before a concert audience of hundreds of thousands and millions more at home, as well as to our troops around the world on the American Forces Network. SDPB will mark Memorial Day with a number of specials, including: On Monday, May 28, SDPB1 will feature Independent Lens Hell and Back Again at 9pm (8 MT). The program follows a U.S. Marine in combat, and through the challenges of recovery after he is injured. SDPB2 Television will feature the story of two family generations who have been involved in U.S. wars abroad. My Vietnam Your Iraq airs on Memorial Day, May 28, at 7pm (6 MT).

1967 – Rock & Roll Comes of Age SDPB Radio: Saturday, May 26, 3pm (2 MT)

If rock and roll was born in the 1950s, then by 1967 – for better or worse – it had grown up. Sound Opinions celebrates the 45th anniversary of this influential year in a one hour special: 1967 – Rock & Roll Comes of Age. The special airs on Saturday, May 26, at 3pm (2 MT) as part of the Best of the Rest series. For rock, perhaps no year saw more pivotal changes. 1967 was the year that the recording studio as an instrument changed the way music is created; that the album as a united concept

changed the way it is heard; that the festival experience remade the way music is celebrated live. Pop music became big business. Tune in as Sound Opinions hosts Jim DeRogatis and Greg Kot explore landmark releases by The Beatles, Pink Floyd, Love and the Velvet Underground. Out went the teendriven single ... in came the album as art. They also look back at the historic Monterey International Pop Festival - a coming out party for Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix and Otis Redding that said to the world, “Rock and roll is here to stay.” May 2012 19

AARP SD Supports Voter Education

SDPB is exploring the issues and the candidates this election season with the support of AARP South Dakota, our Program Funder for Election 2012. Thank you. Through the partnership, SDPB is producing a number of great programs with one goal – to educate voters before they make their decisions. Meet the Candidates and election-related forums are scheduled over the summer and fall, with the support of AARP South Dakota and the members of the Friends of SDPB. Meet the Candidates offers all State Legislature candidates in the state a chance to share their platforms with voters via SDPB

Television and SDPB Online. Election forums will look at candidates for Public Utilities Commission and U.S. House, plus the election issues on our ballots, via SDPB Television, SDPB Radio and SDPB.org. In addition, programming on TV, Radio and Online will look at national elections and issues throughout the election season. Election 2012 is one of many SDPB projects aimed at informing and educating South Dakotans. Projects range from outreach to literacy to on-air programs. To find out how to sponsor SDPB programming for South Dakotans, contact Larry Rohrer at 1-800-456-0766 or e-mail Friends@SDPB.org.

Thank you to all the people who became new members of the Friends of SDPB, as well as those who renewed their memberships or gave additional gifts. Membership Drive dollars are used to pay for programming on SDPB Radio, so our outstanding 24/7 lineup is thanks to you.

Top programming included local offerings like Morning Classics with Owen DeJong, Dakota Midday and Jazz Nightly with Jim Clark. National winners included the Radiolab and This American Life double-headers, and the Car Talk Marathon. Thank you for making SDPB Radio possible.
