Happy June!

It’s officially summer in South Dakota, and we’re looking forward to a busy June.

The South Dakota High School Rodeo Championships will be aired LIVE on SDPB-TV for the first time on Saturday, June 15. Celebrating the 75th anniversary of the South Dakota High School Rodeo Association, we spoke to the current SDHSRA Secretary to learn about the history and the future of high school rodeo in South Dakota. Check out that interview and more on pages 4-6.

We have two membership drives coming up, and a very generous match offer. First, the June TV pledge drive will be June 1 to June 9 and feature programming from some of your favorite musical artists. You don’t want to miss the Academy of Country Music Honors on Saturday, June 1 at 8pm (7 MT) and Chicago & Friends: Live at 55 on Saturday, June 8 at 10pm (9 MT). Then, June 27 to the morning of June 29, our fiscal year-end radio drive will be accompanied by a member challenge fund with a $10,000 match from several SDPB supporters.

PBS Passport is one of our most popular member benefits, but you need somewhere to stream it. A special membership offer, which includes a Roku Express streaming device, is available NOW. Transform your current television into a smart TV and stream PBS Passport with this device. It’s that easy!

As you prepare for summer trips, don’t forget to include us in your podcast lineup. The NPR+ app makes accessing all your favorite NPR podcasts simple. If you are already a member, you may already have access to NPR+ and all the perks. Give us a call if you need assistance registering.

Gratefully,

WELCOME

The South Dakota High School Rodeo Association is celebrating 75 years of operation, 75 years of sportsmanship, education, family bonding, heritage, and opportunities. According to their website, the SDHSRA aims to "provide an opportunity to participate in the highly competitive and rewarding sport of rodeo while offering a stepping stone for our students to move on to other "arenas" after high school graduation, be they rodeo or academic arenas." South Dakota joined Texas, New Mexico, Montana, and Louisiana as the National High School Rodeo Association charter states in 1949.

75 Years of Rodeo

We had the opportunity to speak with Penny Schlagel, secretary of the SDHSRA, who gave us some insight into the organization.

"I grew up by Raymond, South Dakota," says Penny. "My parents were both super involved in high school rodeo growing up. My dad actually started the first East Region South Dakota High School Rodeo. He was the founder and producer of that rodeo for over 25 years. I recently took over as a South Dakota High School Rodeo Association state secretary last fall. So, while I'm not new to the association, I'm new to the role."

Penny tells us how high school rodeo started—stating that a couple of kids from Texas moved to New Underwood, South Dakota, in 1947 with the idea for the school district to host a high school rodeo. While the school district wasn't on board, the American Legion took the steps, and just a few years later, in 1949, South Dakota was involved. The first South Dakota State High School Rodeo Finals were held at New Underwood in 1949. South Dakota is a charter member of the NHSRA, helping to start the organization in 1951. The NHSRA is a South Dakota NonProfit Organization and South Dakota High School Rodeo is a 501(c)3 Non-Profit Organization. Penny states South Dakota has always had "a strong foothold with rodeo."

While Penny is just starting her career as a secretary, her knowledge and passion for the program go far beyond it, and she speaks more about how it impacts the youth of our state.

"One of the big pillars of high school rodeo is education. Kids who are members of the High School Rodeo Association can apply for scholarships worth over $70,000. Because of that, because of college rodeo, I hear kids say all the time, 'I wouldn't have gone to college if weren't for rodeo.' They can go to tech school or a four-

year college. Then, those kids go on and do things where they support the industry by working for vendors and doing other things like that."

Ann Sundermann has served as the Executive Secretary of the SDHSRA for nearly 20 years. "I like to present the importance of the association by showcasing the quality of our athletes and their abilities - not only in the arena, but outside the arena, as well."

"The responsibility and humility that it takes to participate in the organization makes well-rounded, very employable individuals down the road," says Ann. We are extremely proud of the youth in our organization, and feel they are the cream of the crop when it comes to responsibility, accountability, kindness and competitiveness. They accept correction and constructive criticism and use that to improve themselves. They also understand that in order to succeed in the arena or in any other venture, it takes hard work and determination. They understand the level of commitment to do such things while caring first for their animals, and then concentrating on themselves. These traits carry over to their everyday lives and experiences.”

Penny states that rodeo not only has an impact on the youth but also a lasting opportunity for involvement.

"High school rodeo is a stepping stone to other rodeos, whether it be college rodeo or just continuing to do rodeo for fun. You don't play pickup basketball when you're in your sixties, but horses and rodeo is something you can do forever and ever. I go to team roping, and there are 80-year-old men still roping." She continues, "My lifelong friends are my rodeo friends. My very best friend is one I met when I was ten years old at a rodeo."

Penny has two big goals for the future of the SDHSRA. One of them is growing membership.

5

"High school rodeo in South Dakota is strong, and I'd like to grow our membership back up. We are at 515 members statewide, which is a lot. If you look at it nationally, we are third behind Texas and Oklahoma. We have a lot of kids, and we want to continue that involvement. But when I talked to Bud [past SDHSRA secretary], he said the highest number he remembered was around 800. It would be great to crank that back up there and get kids involved again."

Another goal Penny shared with us is the ability to support kids in their future endeavors, including college and business.

"I would like to see support for kids' business ideas. Education has been great to me. However, I have a lot of friends who didn't go to college and have really great businesses that they grew, and I'd like to see high school rodeo potentially start to support that. Possibly through mentorship or even a grant, something to help somebody get started in a related business. I'd love to see that. Whether these kids want to be an electrician, plumber, or photographer, I think a kid could put together a decent business plan."

Ann talks about the rodeo’s successes and what we can look forward to in the upcoming season.

“SDHSRA State Finals Rodeo in Fort Pierre, SD is the 3rd largest High School Rodeo State Finals in the nation. It takes place over five days with five actionpacked rodeo performances in addition to three Cutting and Reined Cow Horse performances. We are excited to be able to bring the High School Rodeo Finals to Fort Pierre again in 2024, celebrating the 75th year of SD State Rodeo Finals. The SDHSRA youth competing members encompass a diversity of backgrounds and ethnicities from the entire state of South Dakota. The rodeo athletes compete for their chance to represent Team South Dakota at the national level.”

"SDHSRA wants to raise good, quality kids that are respectful and competitive. Really, it's a big family atmosphere. I always say it's a traveling circus; it's a big campground where everybody has horses, dogs, kids, and bikes. It’s so much fun."

The Best of the Joy of Painting: Special Edition

A cult-like figure since his low-budget, unrehearsed, and unedited Joy of Painting programs first aired in 1982, the late Bob Ross' enduring popularity is attributable to more than just his paintings. His serene, nurturing disposition can serve as therapy for the weary, and his respect for nature and wildlife has helped heighten environmental awareness. The Best of the Joy of Painting highlights the soft-spoken Ross as he completes his beautiful "Home in the Valley" painting and offers a glimpse into his painting techniques. It also features an off-set painting class where a handful of young fans are learning to create under the guidance of a premiere certified Bob Ross instructor.

Disco: Soundtrack of a Revolution

Disco embodied the height of 1970s glamour: a dance floor culture born in New York City that went on to take over the world. But its success also obscured its wider significance. Inextricably bound up with the major liberation movements of the 1970s, disco speaks to some of the biggest issues of today: LGBTQ+ identity and female empowerment. Disco: Soundtrack of a Revolution, a 3-part series, also underscores disco’s survival. Co-opted by the commercial mainstream, the genre dominated and flooded the market – the airwaves and record shops – leading to a subsequent hate-fueled backlash. As a result, the music and its ethos went back underground, where it evolved into an electronic dance sound that laid the foundations for contemporary dance culture.

The upbeat cooking competition spotlights the amazing variety of tastes and traditions found across the country and celebrates the roots of America’s diverse cuisine.

D.I. Rachita Ray is a British Asian policewoman new to homicide who endures daily microaggressions for the color of her skin when she's not enduring them for being female. In season two, after being suspended from the force when her fiancé was found to have links to organized crime, DI Ray returns to homicide to investigate another sensitive and high-profile case centering on the murder of Frank Chapman, the head of a notorious crime family and a local nurse caught in the crossfire. Their deaths ignite tensions across the city, putting DI Ray in a race against time to uncover the truth before the Chapman family act out their revenge and an all-out gang war erupts onto the streets. All evidence points towards a rival crime family, the Mochanis, being responsible for the murders, but as DI Ray starts pulling at the threads of the case, a much more insidious mystery begins to unravel. Once again, the series will explore deep personal conflicts for Rachita as both a British Asian woman and as a police officer. This 6-part series premieres Sunday, June 16 at 9pm, 8 MT on SDPB1.

27 seasons of

DAKOTA LIFE

The 27th season of Dakota Life doesn’t premiere until September, but we’re already hard at it. Our team is crafting episodes that recognize and appreciate South Dakota towns. That work began in April when we met with members of the nine featured communities in a series of conversations. Now, our team of producers, videographers, and editors are spending the summer collecting stories and putting them together in time for their premiere.

Along with new stories for season 27 is a new host. Tim Davison is taking the reins as host of Dakota Life. Tim, an SDPB producer since 2022, is originally from Wahoo, Nebraska. He has always been passionate about seeing what the world offers. In the past decade, he has traveled to all 50 states. Now firmly planted in South Dakota soil, Tim is sharing his passion for storytelling with us.

"Although I'll never fill the shoes of the legendary Larry Rohrer [who retired in 2022], I am looking forward to taking a swing at representing this iconic show that's been on for twenty-six seasons! I am most looking forward to learning from the people of South Dakota. Every time I do an interview, I learn something new. One of the best parts about filming Dakota Life is meeting the people who make the

town great. I enjoy learning the behind-the-scenes in so many different people's lives,” said Tim. “It's a privilege that not many people get to have. Whether it's attending a bison hunt at WoLakota Ranch on the Rosebud Reservation, seeing how a branding iron is made inside Larry Rhoden's welding shop, or seeing how the world's best chislic is made at Meridian Corner, I've learned that everybody has an exciting story to tell.”

Brad Van Osdel, SDPB’s Director of Entertainment Content, shares his anticipation for the future of Dakota Life.

"I am most excited about the relationship the staff builds with the folks in these communities. The joy we get from sharing these stories is as great as the joy the communities have in watching their episode when it premieres. Like these small towns, Dakota Life changes and evolves every season. I am proud when we produce stories of remarkable people and their joy."

If you see a crew from SDPB in your town and have an exciting story to tell, please take a moment and introduce yourself. The Dakota Life staff is always on the lookout for items that might be included in the show or on our social media pages.

SDPB Wins Distinguished Service Award

The South Dakota NewsMedia Association presented the SDNA Distinguished Service Award to SDPB.

Chosen by the SDNA Board of Directors, the recognition was made in appreciation of the great work SDPB has done over the years in providing news and photo content from the various state events to our newspapers. The SDPB content from state tournaments and competitions has been greatly appreciated by SDNA members and has been used often by many newspapers.

In addition to providing live streamed and televised coverage of SDHSAA All-State and Sports Championships, SDPB arranges for photos taken at every SDHSAA-sanctioned state event. Those photos are made available for free via Flickr to newspapers, yearbook publishers, and others who want to use them for

non-commercial purposes. (Hint: Parents – you may download and print photos of your kids in action for free!)

The SDNA presented the award at a luncheon during their convention in Huron. Kristi Hine, publisher of the Wessington Springs True Dakotan and 2023-2024 President of the SDNA, said, “I know I speak for all SDNA members when I say how appreciative we are of the news content and photography that SDPB provides us throughout the year.”

SDPB is proud to receive this award. “We’re happy to be recognized by an organization committed to the citizens of South Dakota,” said Julie Overgaard. “We stand with them, providing the news and information necessary for an informed electorate that our founders envisioned when they included Freedom of the Press in the 1st Amendment to the Constitution.”

The towns featured in the 27th season of Dakota Life are McLaughlin, Britton, Garretson, Burke, Pine Ridge, Box Elder, Faith, Wessington Springs, and Elk Point.

Join SDPB’s Lori Walsh in conversation with One Book South Dakota author Trent Preszler

After his father’s death, Trent Preszler found a shoebox, bound with tape and tucked away in his parents’ basement. Inside lay his father’s Bronze Star, earned during combat in Vietnam. It was the first time anyone in the family learned that rancher and rodeo cowboy Leon K. Preszler had received the medal. The discovery sparked a journey for Trent that would take him deep into his complex relationship with his father and with facets of his own identity.

Trent Preszler’s memoir “Little and Often” is this year’s One Book South Dakota, chosen by the South Dakota Humanities Council. In the book, Preszler chronicles his life in New York and his struggles to reconcile the faith of his childhood with the reality of his adulthood.

“There was this kind of purgatory,” Preszler says. “I didn’t know how to fit in. I was too gay to be in South Dakota, but too country to be in the city. It’s a dichotomy I’ve struggled with my whole life.”

Preszler navigated his way through grief by using his father’s tools to build a full-sized wooden canoe. He says thousands of readers have written to him, offering memories of their own grief and loss.

“I shared my story, but now that story lives on its own in the world,” Preszler says. “It’s my story, but it has a bigger purpose to serve now.”

Trent Preszler joins SDPB’s Lori Walsh in conversation as part of the One Book South Dakota author tour, Tuesday, June 25 at 6 p.m. CDT in SDPB’s Sioux Falls studio.

This event is free, but registration is encouraged as space is limited. Visit sdpb.ticketbud.com to register.
