HAPPY DEcEMBER, READERS!
This issue rings in the holiday season and the year's end. While we look forward to the New Year, we still have an entire month of content and programming for you. In this issue, we'll look at our Holiday programming, continued sports coverage from last month, and much more to wrap up the year.
Tis' the season. On pages 4-5, we'll look at four of our most anticipated specials, including Laura Ingalls Wilder Pageant's A Barrel Full of Christmas Memories and O Holy Night: Christmas with The Tabernacle Choir. We will also have radio programming available to get you in the spirit; find more information on page 20, along with a piece by Lori Walsh. In addition, you can look forward to continued sports coverage on numerous athletics, teams, and players.
We look back and cherish a year of bringing content to our members and viewers; this wouldn't be possible without you. Behind the scenes, we reminisce about 2022 as we prepare for another great year. The staff is working hard to ensure that 2023 is the best yet. As always, we hope this issue brings you joy, as does the holiday season. However you celebrate, have a wonderful December.
Cheers,

The Letter: A Message for Our Earth documents a completely original set of events about a contemporary game-changing "call to action" that features unprecedented access from one of the world’s most iconic leaders: Pope Francis. These experiences raises questions about how science and spirituality are vital to solving the issue of our time: climate change.

DAKOTA LIFE 25TH ANNIVERSARY FLASHBACK
JOSHUA SPIES
We're celebrating 25 years of Dakota Life. Throughout this anniversary season, we'll revisit some of the people we've met on the show over the years. This month, a conversation with Joshua Spies, an artist based in Sioux Falls.
BY MICHAEL ZIMNY, ASSOCIATE PRODUCER Image Courtesy of Rapid City Journal PHOTOS COURTESY OF JOSHUA SPIESGrowing up in Watertown, Josh got his start sketching prairie waterfowl. Nowadays, collectors seek him out for his wildlife paintings settings as diverse as Tanzania, Mongolia and Tajikistan.
JS: Yes. God works in strange ways. If I had grown up somewhere else, I'm sure I would have still had the same motivation to do what I'm doing. It is kind of strange two of them, Terry Redlin and John Wilson are from Watertown and John Green is from Madison, which is not very far away.
SDPB: Did you have certain spots where you would observe local wildlife?
JS: Yes, I did a lot of photography. In a small community it didn't take long to get outside of town. I've traveled the world working on a lot of projects and different things from different continents. But it's kind of funny cause now I'm getting more interested in doing projects on things around here.
SDPB: What were some of your first subjects?
JS: Birds. The usual like pheasants and ducks, geese and songbirds. That sort of material from the region.
SDPB: How did COVID affect how you worked?
JS: It shut everybody down. I don't really do any shows anymore, at all. It's mostly through private people that have been collecting work for a while or word of mouth.
SDPB: What places stand out in your travels?
JS: I love Africa. I love the people there. Mongolia is another one. Just seeing how their culture is, it's just fascinating to me.
Dakota Life featured Joshua's work back in 1999. He's circled the globe a few times and expanded his subject matter in exotic locales. We caught up with him again as we look back at 25 years of Dakota Life.
SDPB: Who influenced you as a young artist?
Joshua Spies: I'm originally from Watertown. Terry Redlin, John Green and John Wilson were all kind of mentors. I would paint with John Green from time to time. I would hang out with John Wilson at his studio, and the same with Terry Redlin. When I had questions on projects and things I was working on they all always had open doors.
SDPB: Does it surprise you looking back, that a kid from Watertown would have those kind of mentors?

S u PPORTING SPOTLIGHT
The end of the year is fast approaching, and we are in the season of giving. Giving is vital to SDPB and without supporters investing in us, we wouldn't be able to tell South Dakota's stories. We have over 13,000 member families and approximately 170 corporate partners across the state who invest in SDPB, which helps bring great content to you.
For our last spotlight of the year, Ryan Howlett, Development Director for Friends of South Dakota Public Broadcasting, discussed end-of-the-year giving and member benefits. Friends is a nonprofit arm of SDPB that helps raise the dollars for programming. Ryan says, "When you become a member of South Dakota Public Broadcasting, you're really starting a relationship with SDPB. It enables us to offer member benefits like Passport, the SDPB magazine, and all kinds of different thank-you gifts. There are tons of great benefits to being a donor, the biggest one is knowing you helped tell South Dakota's story. You provide educational materials for students and young learners that need it."
When you become a member, you give us what we need to continue our mission with truthful storytelling and news. One way this happens is with year-end giving,
and Ryan discusses some of the logistics of how that works. "Every situation is unique depending on your tax needs and how you want to make a gift. We like to talk with donors individually to meet their specific needs. One reason to make your gift now is because that tax deduction deadline is December 31st. So, if you haven't made your gift, this is a great time to do so." If you're not sure how you want to give, there are plenty of ways to do so. Ryan continues, "There's a lot of different methods to making a gift. Friends of SDPB is set up to take gifts of stock transferred, or make a transfer directly from your IRA, so you don't have to pay taxes on potential gains. You can also make a gift of property or establish a charitable gift annuity. Any way you want to make a gift, we have a philanthropic vehicle to do so."
We are so thankful for those who give. Giving helps ensure SDPB can tell the unique and interesting stories of South Dakota. Ryan says, "We want to cover everything from Yankton and Vermillion up to Roswell, to Lemmon, and down to Pine Ridge. All four corners of the state." He says, "You help bring fair, honest news to everyone across the state. You support those stories that aren't going to get told anywhere else by becoming a member of South Dakota Public Broadcasting."
"GLOBAL vOIcES, SOuTH DAkOTA cHOIcES: THIS IS A BIG-PIcTuRE ORGANIZATION THAT IS FOcuSED ON SOuTH DAkOTA. WE'RE PART OF THE FABRIc OF WHAT MAkES THE STATE GREAT, AND WE NEED YOuR HELP TO REMAIN THAT WAY."
GIvING
