Ready, Set, Summer!
Summer is upon us. Even if your little ones aren't in the classroom, they can develop and strengthen their minds before the next school year begins. SDPB is equipped with a strong and willing team of specialists who are constantly working on resources that can be utilized by parents, guardians, teachers, daycare providers, and more. Two of our Education Specialists, Steven Rokusek and Amelia Meyer, gave us some insight on current resources that you can jump into along with upcoming tools they are eager to roll out.
Steven Rokusek focuses on developing materials and providing in-service training at schools and education conferences. Our weekly education e-newsletters and updated content on our website are all thanks to Steven's dedication to bringing education to people around the state. The slowdown of outreach during the summer gives our team extra time to focus on the particulars. This summer brings updates to our pages like Native American Studies, South Dakota History (Dakota Pathways, Images of the Past), and Sanford Promise
"We have created a new video series called How To Draw Using Perspective: By Dick Termes," says Steven. "South Dakota Public Broadcasting produced this online drawing series in partnership with Asio Studio of Rapid City. The twelve-part video series covers one-point to six-point perspective and will include a comprehensive educational website with perspective grids, activities ideas, and lesson plans. The new website will launch in the fall for the new school year."
Amelia Meyer, another education team member, specializes in Early Learning. She creates resources used by parents, early learner educators, and caregivers. She is the co-creator of our weekly ELI (Early Learning Initiative) Links newsletter and is responsible for posting content on our ELI webpage. She is currently working on making plenty of resources readily available and easily accessible.
Amelia says, "I love doing this work because people often don't know the huge variety of activities we provide, and it's so fun to see their reaction when we share all the hands-on lessons available." She continues, "SDPB got to partner with Headlights Theater in Sioux Falls to produce a series called, Create Your Own Dance Studio It has been fun to work on because each of the five videos shows the steps to construct a place to dance and a way to create a dance for children aged 5-10. It makes dancing accessible right in your own home!"
Many things are in motion in our education department, and many things are immediately available. Steven and Amelia share their personal favorite resource.
"My favorite resource to work on is our Dissection 101 series," says Steven. "Dissection 101 is an ongoing series in partnership with Dakota State University and is by far our most popular series. There are 19 videos and accompanying resources, including lesson plans, quizzes, photos, and other materials for many dissections. We developed the resources for many reasons, including reducing the number of specimens used by a class, increasing the dissection quality, and enhancing students' learning experience."
Amelia continues by saying, "I love our weekly Links Newsletter! It's designed to share one quality resource under four content areas (from the SD Early Learning Guidelines): Communication Development, Cognitive Development, Social and Emotional Development, Health, and Physical Development. It gives you just a little dose of what you can find on our website. Links come to your email inbox. You can take a quick peek at it and have a better understanding of your child's development and activities that would be appropriate for them."
School might not be in session, but learning and information always are. We hope these resources will come in handy through the season and onward.

Softball is finally here!
The journey may have been long and challenging at times, but South Dakota is finally underway with a sanctioned league of high school softball. This month, the state championship will take place in Aberdeen.
By Nate Wek, SDPB Sports Content Producer
At the beginning of the season, three inaugural games took place: Beresford vs Dell Rapids, Canton vs Dakota Valley, and Pierre vs Rapid City Central. At the Governors and Cobblers matchup in Pierre, there was a bit of a pre-game ceremony to ‘cut the ribbon’ for the sport. South Dakota High School Activities Association assistant executive director Jo Auch, who was a key proponent in getting softball sanctioned in the Mt. Rushmore state, was invited to throw out the first pitch. This was an important moment showcasing the beginning of a new journey for softball in South Dakota.
“It wasn't pretty,” Auch said jokingly. “But I did get to throw the first pitch. So, that was really an exciting, proud moment for me, just to know that we're finally there and it's been a long time coming. And to see this come to light, I had tears in my eyes. It was something that was super exciting and just to provide that opportunity for these kids.”
The Board of Directors for the SDHSAA voted to officially sanction high school softball in November of 2021 with the spring of 2023 being slated as the inaugural season. But the journey towards sanctioning the sport extends back longer than most think. Nearly two decades ago, before Jo Auch was even on the executive board, the high school activities association was tasked with finding another girls sport. Cheer, dance, and soccer were discussed as options along with softball.
“I think there was some fear that if we add softball, baseball would fly right in there, and that's not going to help our girls' numbers, things of that nature,” Auch explained. “But all of those sports were kind of in the mix for that.”
Cheer and Dance became a sanctioned activity in 2007, and then boys and girls soccer followed in 2012. But yet, softball was still left out.
“About six, seven years ago as I was sitting in this chair, and we're one of the few states that didn't have softball in the nation, I'm going, we are really missing the beat here,” Auch stated. “So, we started that conversation at our AD's conferences and just said, "Hey, when are we ready to get on board?" And our policy here
has always been the schools need to bring that to light, but let us know when it's time for us to add an activity in this process.”
The process really gained momentum three years ago. To be clear, high school softball has been a part of some of the state’s member schools for some time, but it was like baseball, a club sport. This means it wasn’t a school-funded athletic activity. And another key difference, high school (club) softball was played in the fall. Now that it’s sanctioned, the sport is being played in the spring.
“My goal was to get 30 schools involved,” Auch said. “I didn't know if we were going to have one class, two classes, three classes when this started. But when I started getting these participation forms back and schools were yes, yes, yes, I'm just going, yes, yes, yes.”
For the inaugural season of softball, there are 49 teams in three classes. Class AA has 16, Class A with 19, and Class B being represented by 14 teams.
“I'm absolutely hoping and planning on this softball continuing to grow throughout our schools, throughout our A and B especially,” exclaimed Auch. “I think that's where we have the potential for the most growth with this. And there'll probably be some co-op teams, and that's okay. It's just like I said; it's finding those coaches and finding those kids. We know we're going to spread kids a little thin if they want to be involved.”
The state tournament for the inaugural sanctioned season of high school softball will take place in Aberdeen on June 1-3, where the sport will crown its three inaugural state champs.
Check sdpb.org/softball for updates and post tournament photos.
SDPB will stream the 3rd place and championship games from all three classes. Watch the Class AA 3rd place and championship games June 3 at 3pm (2 MT) on SDPB2.

Join host Alejandra Ramos and judges Leah Cohen, Tiffany Derry, and Graham Elliot as ten talented home cooks showcase signature dishes, share heartfelt stories, and compete to win the national search for The Great American Recipe. Season two of the series premieres June 19. The second season will give home cooks from around the country an opportunity to showcase their beloved signature dishes and will continue to celebrate the multiculturalism that makes American food unique and iconic.
As our own way of playing along, we offer the Great SDPB Menu. SDPB is part of your day from dawn until dusk, so, we decided to create a menu of dishes you can prepare at home.
Breakfast Lunch
Wake up with SDPB’s local Morning Edition host Ryan Bozer and the “Morning Egg-ition on Rye.” This recipe combines the nutty flavor of rye bread, the lightness of avocado, the smokiness of gouda, and the peppery, tangy flavor of cress. It’s a breakfast that will wake you up as you swallow the news of the day.
Lori Walsh’s In the Moment combines stories and interviews from across the state. Try out the “In a Moment Salad” for lunch. The salad can be thrown together in a jiffy, and the ingredients are as diverse as Lori’s guests.
Supper Evening Sweets
The evening meal is a hearty, hardy take on some great produce available in the state. Krystal Miga, SDPB’s All Things Considered host, is a fan of food from Asia, and we’ve created an Asian-fusion meal that will top off the day. The “All Ingredients Considered” Asian Bison burger is a tip of the hat to our wooly friends of the prairie and features an Asian slaw as a side.
Jazz up your evening with a Chokecherry Kuchen. Karl Gehrke and Jazz Nightly wind down the evening with sweet tunes weeknights. Add some sweet to the evening with a kuchen (German for “cake”) filled with native Chokecherries.
“In a Moment Salad”
INGREDIENTS INGREDIENTS
2 eggs
2 slices rye bread
1 avocado
2 slices Gouda cheese
1 Radish Lemon juice

Cut the avocado in half, remove the pit, lift the flesh out of the skin, cut into strips and sprinkle with lemon juice.
PREP CONT.
Scramble two eggs (add a touch of milk to make them fluffy). Salt lightly.
Crush the avacado with a fork and season with a little salt and pepper.
Toast the slices of rye bread. Spread avocado and cover with radishes, cheese, and egg. Serve open-faced sprinkled with cress.
Cherry tomatoes
Red onion

Prep and combine the romaine lettuce, cherry tomatoes, red onion, cucumber, green peppers, olives, and feta cheese in a large bowl. Adjust amounts to suit your taste.
In a small bowl, make the Greek salad dressing by whisking together the olive oil, lemon juice, oregano, salt, and pepper.
Pour the dressing over the salad and toss to combine. Add more black pepper to taste.

“Morning Egg-ition on Rye”
“Jazzy Chokecherry Kuchen”
INGREDIENTS PREPARATION
11 tbsp butter unsalted at room temperature
1/3 cup sugar
2 large eggs
2 cup all-purpose flour
1 tsp baking powder
3/4 tsp salt
2 tbsp sugar
Chokecherry filling
(substitute 2 cups of blueberries, if you wish)
Chokecherry Filling
3-4 cups water
2 cups chokecherries (fresh, frozen or dried)
1 cup honey, or to taste
1/4 cup flour
Streusel topping
1 cup flour
4 tbsp cold unsalted butter
4 tbsp sugar
Many of the ingredients for these recipes can be purchased at local farmer’s markets. Help your meal go from farm to fork and support your local farmer by visiting a farmer’s market near you. Find a list of farmer’s markets in South Dakota by scanning the QR code here!
Filling preparation
Combine the chokecherries with water in a saucepan. Bring to medium heat, cooking until chokecherries soften. Sweeten to taste with honey. In a small bowl blend flour and enough water to make a creamy mixture and stir this slowly into fruit mixture until thickened. Allow to cool.
Kuchen preparation
Preheat oven to 350 F. Grease and line an 8-inch round springform pan with parchment paper.
In the bowl of a stand mixer using the paddle attachment, or in a large bowl using an electric mixer, combine sugar and butter. Add the eggs, stirring to combine. Sift the flour, baking powder, and salt into the mixture, beating to combine.
Scrape the batter into the bottom of the pan. Smooth the top of the batter.
In a small bowl combine the streusel ingredients. Use your fingertips to rub the butter into the flour and sugar until coarse crumbs begin to form.
Place the chokecherry filling (or blueberries) on top of the batter, then top with streusel. Place cake in the oven, on the middle rack.
Bake 45 minutes until the top is golden brown, the filling bubbles around the edges, and the center of the cake is set.
Let cool in the pan on a wire rack. Run a sharp knife around the edge of the pan and remove the cake from the pan.

ThE DEAN OF SOUTh DAkOTA BROADcASTING
Dean Sorenson’s broadcasting career began as a freshly minted adult at age 18 in 1957, when he moonlighted on hometown station KORN in Mitchell as an evening announcer, filling the gap left by Gary Owens of “Laugh-In” fame. A graduate of the now-closed Brown Institute in Minnesota, Sorenson moved to Pierre to manage KGFX at age 23. In 1971, he bought KCCR radio and created Sorenson Broadcasting. He would go on to own 22 stations in South Dakota, North Dakota, Minnesota, Iowa, and Nebraska. He also has held positions on state and national boards, including the National Association of Broadcasters. Over the years he has remained engaged in radio. Sorenson is an early recipient of the Tom Brokaw and South Dakota Broadcaster of the Year awards along with the Broadcaster’s Foundation of America’s Pioneer Award. Sorenson's career is highlighted in a documentary produced by SDSU Journalism and Mass Communication professor Rocky Dailey.

SUPPORTER SPOTLIG h T
South Dakota Public Broadcasting offers extensive resources across numerous channels. We can provide this service to our state because of our generous donors, both individual and corporate. Every donor contributes to bringing our mission to action; every dollar helps form connections across the state between education, information, and our viewers. This month's spotlight is a family-run business that has been investing in public broadcasting for generations. Reptile Gardens, founded by Earl Brockelsby, is one of the world's largest reptile gardens. John "Johnny B" Brockelsby, son of Earl Brockelsby and public relations manager for Reptile Gardens, gave us insight into the motivation behind the support they offer SDPB.
"You can't go wrong with supporting SDPB. If you have children, grandchildren, nephews, or nieces, I'm telling you, their programming is the best of all. My nephews and nieces grew up with that children's programming that wasn't available anywhere else [than public broadcasting]. So, giving to SDPB should be something that you automatically do because they can't supply without the local supporters. It's just absolutely critical."
While Reptile Gardens is thankful for the awareness that partnering with SDPB has brought to their business, their primary obligation for giving is to uphold their mission statement to support organizations like SDPB.
"The reason we do it is because it's the right thing to do," says Johnny. "It's very important for businesses to support public broadcasting because of what it does for the citizens of South Dakota. It is part of our corporate philosophy that my father drilled into us, and we've tried to follow it. Many others have that same philosophy, and other businesses are supporters. Many folks believe in supporting businesses that are philanthropic in nature, so I think when they see Reptile Gardens as a proud sponsor of SDPB, that resonates well. They're team players. They're not just out for themselves; they're giving back to the community.”
We cannot express enough how much we love our supporters like Reptile Gardens. These donors not only consider us when they give but every state member who gets to reap the benefits of our generous sponsors.
“All members of my fAmily Are Also supporters of public broAdcAsting. thAt's how much we believe in it.”
