Musician Tiana Spotted Thunder.

Wish You Were Here with host Eliza Blue returns for a second season. This time the traveling music series works as a visual ethnographic almanac, following the ecology and seasonality of raising food on the high plains, interspersed with original stories, an appreciation of nature and art, and songs about life on the prairie. Blue offers a preview of the season. “I really consciously tried to craft them to follow the arc of the seasons, and part of the mission of the show originally was to focus on rural places,” says Blue. “We’re even taking that a step farther with this season, and pulling in some things with agriculture, which I’m pretty excited about, and some of the overlap between the arts and agriculture, which seems particularly relevant for our region.” The series expands to our Minnesota and North Eliza Blue & Dakota neighbors. In September, we pick pumpkins Billy Talbot. and apples and share music and poetry with musician Sean McFarland (of Snakebeard Jackson fame), and his wife, poet Marcella Prokop, at their orchard called Blackshire Farms near Luverne, Minnesota. Come October, we visit Billy Talbot, bass player from the band Crazy Horse, in western South Dakota. Talbot and Blue duet on a Talbot original. “The episode starts with a little arc about ghost towns that are being revitalized,” says Blue. “Billy and his wife live on a homestead Jami Lynn that had been essentially abandoned. They’ve & Eliza Blue turned it into an amazing house with a music reunite. barn, where he recorded a bunch of his solo albums.” (continued on p. 29) September 2021 September 2021

Belle Brings Plenty, 19, has been boxing since she was nine years old.

Belle Brings Plenty was 10-years old the first time she entered the boxing ring competitively. She’d trained for her inaugural bout for more than a year, running, sparring, jumping rope, and hitting the heavy bag for 3-5 hours a day. And although Belle grew up in a boxing family and worked out at the Wolves Den Boxing Club founded by her father and coach Joseph Brings Plenty Sr., the reality she encountered in the ring surprised her. “I was doing pretty good,” says Belle. “My opponent was a year older and I guess I was winning. But after the first round I remember coming back to my dad and I just started crying from nerves and emotions. Dad said, ‘Why are you crying? You’re winning!’ I went out second round and got a TKO on the girl.” Muhammad Ali famously referenced champion mindset: “I am the greatest. I said that before I even knew I was.” Belle, now 19 and a graduate of Cheyenne-Eagle Butte High School and Kimball Union Academy, has gone undefeated since that first TKO. “With boxing, I’ve learned how to control my emotions,” says Belle. “I still get nervous during that first round. It’s when you’re shaking off the ring rust and getting to know your fighter. But you have to learn how to contain your emotions, so you don’t end up going all out on your opponent and losing.” 4

Today Belle coaches alongside her father at the Wolves Den in Eagle Butte. “It’s really cool to see a lot of girls fighting nowadays, especially because there weren’t many when I was starting,” says Belle. “A lot of the guys respect the girl fighters now, just because of how tough the sport is. When I was 9-yearss old and training, one guy 9-year was telling me I didn’t know how to fight, that I was a girl and he was going to beat me up. So, my dad let me spar him. I ended up beating him and it felt pretty good.” Wicahpi Luta Winona Win Pay Pay Frazier is 11-years old. Known as Nona, she has been boxing for three years. She trains with Belle and Joseph at Wolves Den. Nona’s mother, Ariel Pay Pay, also boxed and encouraged Nona into the sport after Nona was experiencing bullying. “She’s got a lot more confidence in herself,” says Ariel. “She’s really thankful for Coach Belle because she gives her encouragement, not just in the ring or on the practice floor, but also spiritually. She always talks about Belle.” Nona says boxing gives her exercise, company, and focus. “Boxing changed my whole life. One of my goals is to make my coaches proud of me, to push myself and stay with it, stay with boxing.” The Wolves Den boxing program Joseph Brings Plenty Sr. established in an old ambulance garage in 2002 encompasses much more than physical athleticism. Joseph is lieutenant for the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribal Police and has worked in law enforcement since 1993, as well as social services,

school counseling, and as tribal chairman. In 2007, Arvol Looking Horse, the 19th Generation Keeper of the Sacred White Buffalo Calf Pipe, conducted for Joseph a chief ceremony, a momentous bequeathal that entrusts Joseph with responsibility to the Lakota nation for his lifetime. Today Joseph is talking from his cell phone in his truck, en route to the sundance ceremony grounds. “We started getting some of the buffalo skulls ready because a bunch of us from the boxing club are going to be sun dancing. We’re doing some cleanup for the grounds and getting ourselves ready. It rained last night, so it’s beautiful today.” Joseph started boxing in Pine Ridge at 8-years old. His father Enoch, grandfather Phillip, and uncle Vincent Brings Plenty all boxed, as did older cousins. Joseph’s was a schooling of literal

hard knocks. “I was a tiny guy and they put gloves on me and threw me in,” he laughs. “It was traumatizing and I didn’t want to go back the next day, but they took me anyway. But it really helped. Outside was my gym. There weren’t a lot of resources, so you put on shoes and ran out in the country in open spaces. What I’ve been able to put together now for the kids in the community is really awesome.” Boxers at Wolves Den must prove their commitment before Joseph allows them to compete. Physical training is daily, with Friday through Sunday reserved for taking care of themselves spiritually and learning about Lakhól Wicoh’an, Lakota ways of life. Participants sign a contract and the use of alcohol, drugs or recreational tobacco is not permitted. “It’s a restorative justice youth diversion and it’s not easy at all,” says Joseph. “It’s really taxing on the body, but if they’re able to get past the first two or three weeks, they’re going to feel like things have really changed. I didn’t make it that way because I don’t want anybody in it, but it’s just the way it is, there’s no way around it. Because you can bullbull---- a counselor, a priest, pri a judge, but you can’t bull---- a pushup and you can’t bull---- the lodge. If people are using, it really takes it out of them, especially if they’re sitting in a sweat lodge. If they’re using, their body will let them know.”

Nona’s mom Ariel, is appreciative of the program’s inclusion of Lakota traditions. “Nona had the privilege to start all that stuff. We’re semi-traditional people as a family in the home. But there’s also stuff that we don’t do as much, like inipis. We’re not able to do that stuff on a monthly or daily basis, just maybe once a year. But Joe offers that to the children and all his boxers and even the family. He reaches out to everybody.” Joseph says Muhammad Ali was a childhood hero for his bravery in and out of the ring. “He was like Crazy Horse. For an Indian kid on a reservation, Crazy Horse was everything and Ali was like that. He couldn’t get beat and he outsmarted everyone. But what Ali did for social justice and his people, at a time when it wasn’t socially acceptable, showed what he had in his heart. He fought to show we were all created equal, and that actually has to mean something, not just be talk. He knew sitting back and doing nothing perpetuates issues and makes you a coward. He had to have gone to a spiritual level to be able to pull off all his fights.” Belle has extended her boxing career to advocating for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and co-teaching self-defense seminars at Wolves Den with her aunt, Lory Molino, a black belt in mixed martial arts. “Indigenous (continued on p. 26)

“It’s not the crime, it’s the cover-up,” goes the old saying. But that didn’t stop brothers Max and Jake from hiding their guilt after running into an elderly pedestrian during an inebriated drive home from a wedding. As Masterpiece Guilt progresses, they commit more and more serious crimes to hide their culpability in the hit-and-run. Mark Bonnar and Jamie Sives star as the brothers, with Ruth Bradley as the victim’s niece, who falls for her uncle’s killer. “A darkly delicious tale,” declared The Guardian (London). The latest season of Dakota Life premieres Thursday, September 2, at 8pm (7 MT) with a focus on Flandreau. Located near the Big Sioux River, Flandreau reflects a cultural crossroads comprised of many communities, including Flandreau Santee Sioux and other Native tribes, Anglo-European, Filipino, Hispanic and more.

Moody County and Area History SDPB visits with Flandreau community member Roxee Johnson and Moody County historians to explore the rich Indigenous and settler history of the area. Drones and Ground Penetration Radar Gary Kills A Hundred, Tribal Historic Preservation Officer for the Flandreau Santee Sioux Tribe, is determined to educate Indigenous youth on the benefits of drones and ground-penetrating radar. His goal is to inspire all young minds to pursue careers in science and technology and create job opportunities in South Dakota.

The Barn Flies A fronting duo of Casey Wilson and his wife Carleen Wild, along with bassist Thad Reitz and drummer Eric Blissmer, play what amounts to background music during breaks and downtime in the rodeo action, but when a bronc bursts out of the chute, the Barn Flies play the soundtrack for whatever is about to happen. They call it chase music. Photo: Ashley Trudeau Photography

An all-new episode of Dakota Life premieres Thursday, September 2, at 8pm (7 MT) on SDPB1. Rebroadcasts Sunday, September 5, at 1pm (noon MT).

Featuring exclusive interviews with Billy Crystal, Norman Lear, Jerry Lewis, Whoopi Goldberg and Kim Novak, as well as never-before-seen photos from Davis’ vast personal collection and rare footage from his performances in television, film and concert, American Masters Sammy Davis, Jr. explores the life and art of a uniquely gifted entertainer whose trajectory paralleled the major flashpoints of American society, from the Great Depression through the 1980s. By the 1930s, William Randolph Hearst controlled the largest media empire in the country: 28 newspapers, a movie studio, a syndicated wire service, radio stations, and 13 magazines. A man of prodigious appetites - and the model for Orson Welles’s Citizen Kane - his castle, San Simeon, was a monument to his extravagance. American Experience Citizen Hearst presents an insightful biography of one of the most fascinating and powerful men of the 20th century. PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS

In a year when nothing was guaranteed—not even the opportunity to sit in a classroom—GBH News offers an intimate look at how COVID shaped the lives of three Boston-area high school seniors. Meet Anne Laurie Pierre, a senior who holds tight to her dream of becoming the first in her family to go to college as COVID upends the health and stability of her family; Thomas White, a Boston Latin track star focused on competition that becomes increasingly elusive as COVID rates rise; and Bridget Donovan, a senior whose struggles with mental health are exacerbated by the isolation of online school and the absence of her beloved theater group. Class of Covid is a 30-minute retrospective told through student video diaries, text messages and traditional documentary-style film follows the students from their first day of school through graduation. SDPB2: Friday, September 3, 6 & 11pm (5 & 10 MT) & Saturday, September 4, 1pm (Noon MT)

Across the Pacific is a three-hour documentary series about one of the great milestones in aviation history: the 1935 crossing of the Pacific Ocean by a Pan American Airways flying boat known as the China Clipper. Like the NASA engineers and astronauts who would later put a man on the moon in less than a decade, these earlier aviation pioneers built new aircraft, invented new technologies and overcame innumerable obstacles. They had begun in 1927 with a single, 90-mile airmail route. Now they stood at the water’s edge, poised to vault the 8,700 miles of the mighty Pacific.

Banned from attending Georgia’s top five public universities and from paying in-state tuition at other public colleges in the state, DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals) students like Alejandro, Silvia, and Aldo unite through their activist work with an immigrants’ rights group. A humanizing portrait of undocumented students and their families, American Experience The Unafraid enters their homes and learn of their struggles, as working families like theirs support their sons and daughters in pursuit of their dreams for life, liberty, and happiness. Lily Mendoza, Bird Cage Bookstore & Mercantile.

Not everyone has a book, but everyone has a story. I’m at dinner in downtown Sioux Falls ahead of a book event featuring South Dakota’s poet laureate Christine Stewart. A woman I don’t know is seated at our group table. She has written a book, I am told. It’s about an illness that changed her family’s life. She lives in Fort Pierre. Later in the evening this author, Molly Weisgram, will place her book into my hands. Now I am responsible for sharing her story, in a small way, even before I have folded back the cover. It’s not unusual for people to send books to my attention. As the host of In the Moment and a member of the National Book Critics Circle, it’s fairly common. I do my best to treat each one with the respect it deserves and to share it as widely as possible.

Learn. Dream. Grow. Learn. Dream. Grow.

This year, reading feels even more urgent for me. My life is changing in ways I don’t yet understand, but books have always guided me through transitions, so I’ve learned to trust the process. Even so, Molly Weisgram’s “The Other Side of Us” took me by surprise. It quickly became more than a story of struggle and survival. Within pages, the emotions in her story became a reflection of my own dread, my own hope, my own grief. Maybe it’s because meeting Molly at dinner was my first serendipitous encounter after months of pandemic isolation. Maybe it’s the way she passed a copy to me with a barely perceptible reverence, as if she were offering a child into my temporary care rather than an object of paper and ink and glue. Maybe I just like Molly and admire her book. In September, we celebrate South Dakota’s literary heritage for our monthly Spotlight coverage. We’ll meet bookstore owners and authors and readers. We’ll consider the books that have changed how we see ourselves and the books that have changed our world. It’s a road trip on the way to the state’s headline literary event of the year — the South Dakota Festival of Books in Deadwood. I’m excited to share

the journey with SDPB listeners and readers and writers across the state. I’ve been attending the Festival of Books nearly every year since its inception and reporting from event venues since before I worked in radio. I’m grateful to have interviewed authors such as Ted Kooser, Harry Bliss, Chris Browne, and Marilynne Robinson for newspaper stories. I’m honored to have shared the stage for interviews with authors such as Alice Sebold, Robin Wall Kimmerer, Heid Erdrich, and Nick Estes. Once SDPB’s Paul Ebsen and I set up in a green room and recorded back-to-back interviews with a dazzling array of Pulitzer Prize-winning authors, including the luminously funny book critic Michael Dirda. It is equally joyful to spend time with our state’s literary legends — to travel to Windbreak House and sit with Linda Hasselstrom, to pause an interview because of the antics of Dan O’Brien’s cat, and to get to know the everyday memoirists, novelists, and poets who are scribbling away in notebooks and tapping away at keyboards. They write on their lunch breaks, in coffee shops, in minivans, before morning chores. They tell stories that are passed down from one generation to the next. They write letters and emails to loved ones

and messages in bottles to recipients unknown. Not everyone has a book, but everyone has a story. One more aspect of our September book coverage is deeply personal to me. I am thrilled to announce we are chartering a custom-built Little Free Library for placement outside our studios in downtown Sioux Falls. Each week, as steward of the library, I will add books and inspiration. I’ll leave interview notes and book reviews — maybe even Polaroids of the author who left the book to be passed along. We hope you will stop by the studio and visit the library, taking something to help build your own South Dakota bookshelf. The Little Free Library project is dedicated to the memory of my brother Wesley Byers, who died in 2020 after a four-year battle with cancer. Wes was the one who taught me to read. He spent his career as a bookseller and a bookstore manager. He spent a lifetime patiently, relentlessly, and lovingly placing books into the hands of people he adored and people he didn’t know. I am humbled to carry on his work in the world. We invite you to journey with us for this SDPB Spotlight and literary road trip. What books do you think define and redefine our region? Who do you consider our very best authors? What books should people outside the state read to understand more of who we are? You can send me a note via email, social media, or postal service. I love to hear from listeners and readers. There’s a pretty good chance I’ll write you back. Reach Lori Walsh via email at lori.walsh@sdpb.org, via postal service at 601 N. Phillips Ave. Suite #100, Sioux Falls, SD 57104. You can connect with her via social media on Twitter @MomentSDPB and on Instagram @inthemoment. Generation 9/11 Generation 9/11 follows seven young people who lost their fathers in the events of the catastrophic day in September of 2001. When they were born, the nation was drawn together. And now on the 20th anniversary of the tragedy, in a divided America, they enter adulthood with a sense of responsibility that stems from their own personal tragedy. women are targeted more,” says Belle. “Boxing definitely makes me feel more comfortable out there in the world. I think it makes my dad feel comfortable, too. It’s just a good feeling to know that I can protect myself if I have to.” The Wolves Den facilities are provided by the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe. Joseph personally purchased most of the equipment. “That’s where having a very supportive and understanding wife comes in,” he laughs. “We’ve had fundraisers, but it’s tough to fundraise on a reservation, especially when you have very high unemployment. It’s hard to ask anybody for money or resources on that level.” He’s thankful for the tribe’s support, but a gym with a permanent ring and classrooms is on his wish list. Because local clubs are scarce, competitions require travel and associated expenses, so his fighters may not experience as many bouts as other clubs. He’d like to see more clubs but says it’s precluded by a misconception of the sport as barbaric and fighters as bullies. “We need warriors. We need to help each other. I just want to empower the boxers to be able to live the best life that they can, to be not just physically strong, but mentally and spiritually strong as well. If they want

to be champions of the world, I’ll do whatever I can to make that happen, but they don’t have to be pro boxers. These kids may not see themselves as having potential, but I see it, in every one of them, I see it. And I got to try. If I don’t try then I would feel like, ‘Hey, I let Ali down. I let Crazy Horse down.’ I would like to think, in the end, that I made a difference too, maybe not so much on a large scale but just within my community.” A video posted on the Wolves Den Facebook page captures Sophie Brings Plenty, Joseph’s youngest daughter, punching the heavy bag at the gym, gloved hands expertly drawing up to protect her face. At six-years old, she’s the youngest member. “Training the young girls is a lot of fun,” says Belle. “I get to tell them from experience and show them what they need to know before they get in the ring. Before I go in, I like to think of it more of like a battle, a war. I go into a mindset of how my relatives used to be back in the day before they went into war. I like to get into like a state-of-mind where I’m more focused and think of my partner as the enemy, basically take them down and win. That’s just my mentality going in.” Muhammad Ali, a new 4-part documentary series, premieres Sunday, Sept. 19, at 7pm (6 MT) on SDPB1 and SDPB.org.

They support SDPB as underwriters because they believe their customer base and the public broadcasting audience share similar values. “They generally care about environmental concerns and that’s the root of Wild Idea Buffalo Company. They care about climate change, land degradation, animal welfare. They’re connected to political happenings, both locally and nationally, that impact ranching. For us it’s a venue for our product to come full circle, from soil to grass to animal, to meet in a package that we can share and we can consume with a clear conscience.” “Our customer base and SDPB’s audience is passionate about these issues. We know where our food comes from, how it’s been raised, that it’s been humanely harvested. That’s a full-circle food supply right there and that’s what we’re trying to accomplish.”

Dan O’Brien, author, wildlife biologist and rancher, started Wild Idea Buffalo Company in 1997. Wife Jill O’Brien grew up on a dairy farm south of Milbank and worked in kitchens and restaurants before joining Dan at Wild Idea. Jill works on the Cheyenne River Ranch near Hermosa as co-CEO and marketing director. About 900 bison graze the ranch’s grasslands and Wild Idea Buffalo Company works with local sourcing partners who share the large landscape-grazing model. The model includes field harvests and minimal handling, with no administration of antibiotics or hormones. Jill says their sustainable practices are helping them through this season’s extreme weather. “Of course we’re concerned. There’s the fire hazard, and there’s plenty of fuel on that prairie. We’ve been getting just enough rain to get through. We manage our land for drought and practice grazing rotation, so we’re in pretty good shape.” Wild Idea works to revitalize the prairies and improve the food supply by bringing back the buffalo. “We monitor the number of animals the land can support and simultaneously regenerate the prairies, keep the soil and grass healthy as the animals graze as nature intended them to do. It’s important to break even, but breaking even is a good year for us. Our bottom line and markers for success are a healthy environment, healthy prairie and pasture, more birds and a greater array of species on the land.” 28 28

Gwen McCausland has served as the director of the South Dakota Agricultural Heritage Museum for seven years. Raised on a North Dakota farm as the daughter of a large and small animal veterinarian, McCausland was involved in 4-H and FFA before graduating with degrees in anthropology and ethnography from NDSU and Cardiff University in Wales. With over 20 years experience working in museums, McCausland found an attractive opportunity with the Ag Heritage Museum. “I found this position appealing because I come from a long

history of farmers.” says McCausland. “I’ve always been passionate about local food movements and sustainable agricultural practices. This great museum, with it’s great collection, which has great support from SDSU, provides a framework for us to try new ways to view and interpret agriculture.” “People assume the museum is just about homesteading or the caricature of a farmer with a straw hat, bib overalls and wheat in his mouth on a two-cylinder tractor. But what’s fascinating about our museum is that, unlike historic sites interpreting a farm in a specific time period, our scope is from the moment humans first domesticated plants and animals up through today. People have been cultivating corn, beans, squash and sunflowers along the Missouri River for thousands of years. The Mandans and the Sahnish have a long, rich cultivating history. Precision ag and soil conservation are not new, and our ag history doesn’t end in 1950.” McCausland relishes the opportunity to fulfill the museum’s role as the official repository for agricultural history for the state of South Dakota by imparting the full spectrum of the region’s ag heritage, but also by providing a platform for today’s cutting-edge technology and science research nurtured at a land grant university with an agriculturally rich curriculum and extension service. “We want to share not only the history of agriculture in South Dakota, but the science and cultural components that infuse that history in rural communities in the Upper Plains.” When locusts swarmed or the Homestead Act was passed, McCausland is excited to provide context. “It didn’t happen in a vacuum. There were scientific, social, economic, and legislative components that contributed to those moments. Our hybrid exhibits and programs, like Electrifying Rural South Dakota, showcase the indepth contexts of food and fiber production and how it impacts our lives to this day.” “Our museum and public broadcasting share a very common audience. Both of them are interested in lifelong learning, history, culture, and science. We’re both storytellers, just in different formats. SDPB helps us find more space to tell our stories. Tractors have gotten bigger, but the museum has not. Our collections are growing and our stories are statewide. We try to bring the museum’s resources to everyone. Our partnership with SDPB makes sense.”

In November, we traverse to Tuttle, North Dakota, for a tour of the Tuttle Resource Innovation Center, a former high school building renovated into a community food and gathering hub with a commercial kitchen and performance stage. Flautist and hoop dancer Kevin Locke joins from Standing Rock to perform. We stay in North Dakota for December, with a visit to Nome Schoolhouse, where shepherds Chris and Tessa have repurposed a rural schoolhouse into a fiber arts school and center, including on-site classes and retreats, fiber herd and fiber processing mill and retail store. Bohemian Hall in Mandan, North Dakota, is showcased in January and we are joined by farmer and folk musician Chuck Suchy, North Dakota’s official state troubadour. “He’s a really amazing guy and beautiful songwriter,” says Blue. Suchy and Blue share songs recorded in Bohemian Hall. In February, we return to the Black Hills to meet visual artists Mark Zimmerman and Mary Wipf at their home and creative space, Green Ink Gallery. “They both work in multiple mediums and are very knowledgeable about the flora and fauna of the Black Hills.” As the snow begins to melt and we see signs of spring around the state, episodes will include musician Tiana Spotted Thunder singing from her new album Meadowlark, a visit to Blue’s home near Bison, and Blue reunites with musician Jami Lynn’s urban homestead Fretless Farms. “I’m excited to share the stories of these great artists and food producers, to see what generative energy and cross-pollination can occur when we get to see each other’s creations,” says Blue. An all-new episode of Wish You Were Here premieres Thursday, Sept. 2, at 8:30pm (7:30 MT) on SDPB1.
