e-Update November 2010 Volume 2, Issue 11

This month our feature is the Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) program and its upcoming class. CERT was established following the massive 1987 earthquake in the Los Angeles area when the need for community assistance in rescue, first aid and disaster preparedness became readily apparent. CERT classes will begin Jan. 13, 2011. This nationally recognized program is a free, 24 hour training course, typically covered in 8 weeks, one evening per week. CERT is a realistic approach to disaster events where citizens may be the first persons to provide immediate assistance in an emergency. If needed, following a disaster, such as a tornado, fire, or pipeline explosion, these citizen responders use their training as part of a neighborhood or workplace team to help others when professional responders are overwhelmed or not immediately available. Basic training in disaster preparedness, small fire suppression, first aid, light search and rescue, and communication methods to provide the skills needed to offer aid until professional first responders arrive. (Continued)

Our local CERT, BayCERT, has provided assistance with dispatch, traffic control, distribution centers such as PODS, and coordinating volunteers during disasters. The Seabrook and La Porte CERT teams have combined to build a broader network for communication and community involvement. Monthly meetings cover such topics as CPR training, light search and rescue drills, traffic control, disaster psychology and team organization. “CERT is a positive and realistic approach to emergency and disaster situations where citizens may initially be on their own and their actions make a difference. The next class begins Thursday, January 13, 2011, and continues for 8 weeks with the last class being a disaster simulation drill with the Seabrook Volunteer Fire Department (SVFD) and the Clear Lake Emergency Medical Corp (CLEMC). The classes will be held at the SVFD, 1850 E. Meyer, 6:30-9:30 pm. There are no physical requirements or restrictions to become a CERT member and the class is free. The course instruction manual and starter backpack is provided.
