Members Matter. Dear Seabrook Island Club Members, With a little over one month under my belt, I can share that I feel even more confident now that I made the right choice; Seabrook Island is spectacular, and the opportunities are endless. One thing that you will learn about me is that every day I come to work it is with the intention to learn more about you and the needs of our Membership and then find unique and authentic ways to deliver that experience. EQUESTRIAN Charles Hairfield Equestrian Director 843.768.7541 • chairfield@seabrookisland.com

Hours of Operation

Charles Hairfield

Monday – Saturday: 8 AM – 4 PM Sunday: Closed to Public As we start 2022, the Equestrian Center would like to take this opportunity to introduce our staff and highlight our various roles and responsibilities here at the barn. At the barn we enjoy a high staff retention rate that in turn produces top notch care for our horses, boarders, and guests. If you have not joined us recently for a ride, we would love to invite you to call or stop by for a reservation. Equestrian Director Charles Hairfield arrived at Seabrook at the age of eight as a student at the equestrian center. The horse bug bit and he has been here ever since. Now in his twenty-fourth year as a Seabrook Club employee, Charles has held every position at the barn as he worked his way up the ladder. After graduating from the College of Charleston in 2005, Charles officially took over as the Equestrian Director. Since then, he has not only developed a successful Hunter/ Jumper program for our riders, but he has also led the department through major capital projects and renovations. Charles is a certified United States Hunter/Jumper Association Trainer. He continues to ride and show young horses as well as campaign others at various levels up to the National Derby competitions. He is responsible for overseeing the Equestrian Center department, focusing on the day-to-day operations of the program, directing the vet and farrier care of our horses, teaching lessons, and planning for our future growth and development.

Equestrian Manager Cecile Shaw is starting her ninth year with Seabrook Island Club. Hired in 2014 as a guide, she immediately saw the opportunity to create more of a tour experience with our beach and trail ride program. Promoted in 2015 to manager, she quickly went to work incorporating Seabrook Island’s history and ecosystems into our rides. Working with local conservation and history groups our guides now promote all Seabrook Island has to offer through education and respect for our ecosystem. When she is not guiding rides with her favorite horse Leo, Cecile oversees the staff and our 22-acre facility. Bringing her hospitality experience from Walt Disney, Wyndham Resorts, and the fitness industry, Cecile works to elevate every riders’

8

experience at equestrian. Leaning on her landscape operations experience with Valley Crest she works to cultivate relations with our contractors and venders to make sure our barn and grounds are in tip top shape. Under her leadership, the beach and trail ride program has gained recognition with a great reputation and tripled in annual rides.

giving lessons to our students. After graduating from the University of South Carolina, Allie took over the office, streamlining our rides and other services, increasing our efficiency and productivity. It is often said that a leader is only as good as their team, and we are fortunate to be backed by some of the best. Arriving at 6:30 AM our crew is responsible for the care of nearly fifty horses, boarders, and countless annual guests. The key to any good business is staff retention, maybe even more so in the animal care industry. The bonds and trust between our horses and the staff members that care for them provides a consistent environment that produces healthy, well adjusted equine athletes and partners. Allie Augustine

Cecile Shaw

Allie Augustine, Equestrian Office Manager and Assistant Trainer, arrived at Seabrook twenty years ago for pony rides with her grandparents and hasn’t left. Allie showed successfully under Charles through high school, winning the SCHJA Governors Cup Finals in 2011. She has been with the Seabrook Island Club as an employee for fourteen years. Starting as a stable hand in the summers, she now meticulously arranges the trail, beach, pony ride, and lesson program schedules. She works directly with our veterinarians and farriers to schedule and ensure all medical protocols are implemented correctly. She also assists Charles in

9

The Flowers/Herwig brothers have been a part of the Seabrook barn family for over five years. Brendan started with Seabrook in 2015 and his brothers, Jeremy and Cean, later joined him. Although none of them had any horse experience when hired, they were fast learners and quickly

proved themselves to be invaluable. From cleaning the stalls, to running the entire barn, evacuating for hurricanes, and traveling to horse shows, our stall attendants can do it all!

Anna B Morrow

Our team of guides is comprised of equestrians with various backgrounds and interests. The Seabrook guides are responsible for feeding, vetting, and caring for all the horses at the barn. They help keep both our horses and barn tidy. They of course also lead our tours on the beach and trail rides, and assist with our parent-led pony rides. Many of our summer guides return year after year and even stay on through grad school. We pride ourselves on the high-level of consistent care and service we achieve by retaining our great staff members. Finally, did you know the barn has an apartment and is home to a full-time live-in? Charlie Sites has occupied the quarters above the barn for more than twelve years. Charlie is responsible for night checks, making sure the horses have hay and water. Charlie helps administer veterinary care, keeping a watchful eye on any horses that may be under the weather. He meets our afterhours veterinarians and shippers. When Charlie is not working for Seabrook, he helps care for carriage horses on Johns Island.

Gracelyne Bevins

The Seabrook Island Equestrian Center is a twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week, fiftytwo weeks a year operation. The barn doesn’t close for holidays, weather, or even COVID. The horses must eat and go outside, the stalls must be cleaned, the aisles must be tidied, and then it starts all over again. We would not be able to accomplish all that we do without our amazing team that make us who we are.

Competing 101 by Babar Abkar

Tennis is a fantastic sport. It is a technically demanding sport where you can spend all your time just enjoying hitting the ball. That is the start of it all. The sensation of hitting a tennis ball, then moving on to hitting it into the court and eventually hitting different shots at different heights and paces. For some of us, that is enough. We are satisfied with doing that with our friends or a coach. That in itself can be a great way to exercise, sharpen up the reflexes or just enjoy a great time on the court. However, for some, that is just not enough. The need to test our skills, see how far we can go, and the feeling of competing is essential. The nerves, thoughts, and sharpness that come with pressure are high, leading to incredible wins and heartbreaking losses. The biggest thing about competition is to play your opponent and not focus too much on yourself. A lot of us are competing against ourselves on the court. We get angry and frustrated with our own mistakes and focus on what we are doing wrong instead of winning points against the other person. We need to remember we can compete even when we don’t play our best. We can be competitive on the not-so-great days. The best tennis players are great at competing when things

11

are not going well, which is what differentiates the ‘good’ from the ‘great’ players. Pros understand that by playing competitive matches, they become better at dealing with pressure which makes them sharper and better competitors. Competing in tennis means different things to different people. For some of us, it is hitting our shots under pressure. For some, it’s running down every ball, and others will tell you it is running down and putting an extra ball in the court. In my opinion, it is all of the above. The formula for competing well is when we are willing to focus on the upcoming point, run down the opponents’ good shots, and find ways to put the opponent under pressure. This, done repeatedly throughout the match, is what I would call “willing to give it all.” If we want to compete, we have to commit to every point for a set and then start again for the next set. When you are on the court the next time, try it. Run down every ball that you think is out of your range, focus on making one extra ball every rally. Develop these habits, and you will learn to compete better. It is similar to the principle of hitting hundreds of forehands to help you develop a better shot. Most importantly, have fun, enjoy the competition.

GOLF Brian Thelan Head Golf Professional 843.768.7539 • bthelan@seabrookisland.com

Hours of Operation

Monday – Sunday, 7 AM - 6 PM Winter golf on Seabrook Island – hit and miss, one never knows how weather will impact our play and events. We’ll take the good days and be thankful while thinking of our friends up north who only wish they could be playing golf in February! A December weather casualty, the SILGA Holiday Scramble, was rescheduled as a New Year’s Scramble and played on the first Wednesday in January. Fiftyseven ladies enjoyed a brisk 9 hole scramble and two groups shot 28 and tied for the win. Congratulations and pictured on the following pages are the teams of Tracy Thorne, Jackie Cocchiola, Lynn Lillibridge and Sue Carpenter and Cam Parker, Kathy Bruce, Katherine Sankovich, and Gail Kahl. The MGA kicked-off the 2022 schedule with the annual Chili Bowl. Sixty guys played in this par 3, three club event. Boosted by a late hole-in-one by Mike Mansfield, he and partner Cliff Williams came out on top over last year’s winners. Congrats to Mike and Cliff and the rest of the winners listed below: MGA CHILI BOWL RESULTS 1st- Mike Mansfield & Cliff Williams (47.3) *pictured 2nd- Cesare Mastroianni & Earle Shaw (49.4) 3rd- John Lassiter & Dan Parker (49.5) Low Gross- JT Carpenter & Randy Murray (55) In the spirit of encouraging more participation in Club events from our low handicap better players, we have added a few new events which are played on a gross basis – with no handicap. One of those events, played for the first time, is the Men’s Individual Match Play Championship – gross division.

13

HOLE IN ONE Janet Chafe aced the 5th hole on Ocean Winds Thursday, January 13th. She holed a driver from 122 yards and the shot was witnessed by Cindy Brown and Kim Stadelman.

We started back in November with a full bracket of 16 players. One by one, they were eliminated until only two were left – Bob Fisk and Rich Rebholz (pictured). They each won three hard fought matches to get to the finals, and on a fresh, sunny January day, they played the championship match. History was made that day when Rich Rebholz outplayed four-time Club Champion Bob Fisk to become the Club’s 1st Men’s Match Play Gross Champion. Congrats Rich, well played! SILGA kicked off their 2022 tournament schedule with the Annual Souper Bowl benefitting the Lowcountry Food Bank. Sixty-four ladies played the par 3, Four-Ball stroke play tournament on a bluebird January day. Congratulations to the winners – results are listed below: 2022 SILGA SOUPER BOWL (*winners pictured) 1st tie- Diane Allen & Sandy Goheen (40)* 1st tie- Barbara Vincentsen & Lauren Sutton (40)* Low Gross- Debbie Ott & Flo Gilson (58)* 3rd tie- Jennifer Otten & Megan Carter (42) 3rd tie- Beverly Marco & Carolyn McCormack (42) 3rd tie- Sue Dostal & Julie Thogmartin (42) While we’re on the topic of tournaments and events, USGA Rules govern those events – same rules across all levels of golf worldwide. In addition to USGA Rules, we have a set of local rules that govern our everyday play and events. The need for these rules, created by certain situations on our golf courses, is brought to the attention of the Club’s Golf Committee. The Golf Committee then discusses and votes to accept them into play governing all golf at the Seabrook Island Club.

Mike Mansfield & Cliff Williams

You may have seen those on our event rules sheets, but many of you may not be familiar with them if you don’t play in events. Try to commit these to memory as they are there to help you negotiate certain situations you may encounter while playing golf on our great courses. (see 2022 Local Rules that follow on page 11). Working hand in hand to guide our events on a fair and equitable basis is the USGA Handicap System. To ensure that the Club is complying with the USGA Rules of Handicapping, we have an active Handicap Committee. Currently, Bob Fisk is the Chairman of our Handicap Committee and he and the committee present the letter you’ll find on page 12.

Bob Fisk and Rich Rebholz

I hope this information is helpful as we head into our busy tournament season. Whether it’s working on your game with one of our PGA Professionals or competing in club events, we’re here to help you have more fun playing golf. If there’s anything I can do to make your day at the Club more enjoyable, please do not hesitate to let me know.

SEABROOK ISLAND CLUB LOCAL RULES NO PLAY ZONES These areas exist on holes 15 and 16 on Ocean Winds. These penalty areas are marked with red or yellow stakes with green tops, but the contours of the penalty areas do not necessarily conform to a straight line between the stakes. To further define the boundaries of the penalty area, it must be inferred that the line of the penalty areas should conform to the unmown grass or vegetation that is approximately between the stakes. Play from within the No Play Zone is prohibited. If the ball lies within the No Play Zone, the player must take a penalty stroke and proceed under Rule 17.1. If the ball does not lie within the No Play Zone, but the player must stand in that area to play the next stroke, he must take relief (without penalty) no closer to the hole such that the stroke may be played without standing in the No Play Zone.

ALTERNATIVE TO STROKE & DISTANCE When a player’s ball cannot be found or is thought to be out of bounds, the player may proceed as follows and apply two penalty strokes: take relief by dropping their ball in an area between (a) the point where the ball is believed to have come to rest (if lost) or crossed the out of bounds line (if OB) and (b) a point established by moving laterally to the edge of the fairway. The ball must be dropped in the fairway of the hole being played, within 2 club lengths of the edge of the rough but not nearer the hole (see Rule 14.3).

SPRINKLER HEADS CLOSE TO PUTTING GREEN Relief from interference by an abnormal course condition (immovable obstruction) may be taken under Rule 16.1. In addition, if a ball lies off the putting green but not in a penalty area and an abnormal course condition on or within two club lengths of the putting green and within two club lengths of the ball intervenes on the line of play between the ball and the hole, the player may take relief as follows: The ball must be lifted and dropped at the nearest point to where the ball lay that (a) is not nearer the hole, (b) avoids intervention and (c) is not in a penalty area or on a putting green. The ball may be cleaned when lifted.

ANIMAL DUNG If a ball lies in or touches dung or when dung interferes with stance or area of intended swing relief is taken under Abnormal Ground Conditions in accordance with Rule 16-1b.

OCEAN WINDS #15 TEE SHOT A drop area is available on #15 as an additional option for balls hit into the fronting penalty area.

OCEAN WINDS CART PATHS #14 & #17 Coquina shell cart paths on #14 & #17 on Ocean Winds are considered integral parts of the course. Players are not entitled to free relief.

CROOKED OAKS #18 A drop zone is available across the bridge on the right for all balls deemed to be lost in the penalty area right of the fairway. For balls lost in the frontal pond off the tee, players must re-tee. golf@seabrookisland.com | 843.768.2529

HANDICAP GUIDELINES Handicap Guidelines at Seabrook Island Golf Club Fundamental to providing all players an opportunity to compete on a ‘level playing field’ is a properly administered and monitored handicapping program. The purpose of this letter is to provide an overview of the Seabrook Island Club golf handicap management. The United States Golf Association (USGA) requires that each club that participates in the Golf Handicap and Information Network (GHIN) be licensed and have a handicap committee. The Seabrook Island Club Handicap Committee (SICHC) reports to the USGA and is charged with communication, oversight, and enforcement of USGA handicap guidelines (see https://ncga.org/wpcontent/uploads/2021/02/USGA-AGA-Handicap-Committee-Guide-January-2021.pdf). The committee is to: 1) continually monitor the Club’s members posting accuracy; 2) oversee “peer review” on both an informal and formal basis; 3) monitor and maintain handicaps per USGA guidelines; and 4) address problems relating to individual handicapping as they arise. The fundamental goal of the SICHC is to implement the above in a fair and unbiased manner. General expectations are: a.

b. c. d. e.

Players are expected to post their scores every time they play golf during the year. This includes all scores made away from Seabrook. Exceptions to this rule are if the player is playing a format that cannot be posted (e.g. scramble, chapman, alternate shot, playing alone, practicing etc.). Generally, if you are playing with others and you are playing your own ball, a score should be posted and it should be the score that best represents your score for that round. Scores are to be posted the day the round is played. The max score any player may take on a hole is net double bogey. Players are expected to try to make the best score they can on every hole. All scores posted are subject to ‘peer review’.

Definitions of terms and common concerns are addressed in the committee’s frequently asked questions (FAQs) document.* The committee will follow up with individual golfers on an as-needed basis. We look forward to working with all members to preserve the integrity of the sport and ensure fair and equitable golf handicaps.
