A couple of points: 1. Attendees’ cameras will be turned off. You will be able to see the Board, but attendees will not be visible. 2. Attendees will be muted. Two methods to ask questions: 1. Prior to the meeting using the email address sicannualmeeting@discoverseabrook.com. Depending on the number of questions received, we may not be able to answer all questions. 2. At the meeting using the “chat” function at the bottom of the screen. Above everything else, please understand that this is a new process. While we are making every effort to test our systems and learn, something unpredictable will inevitably happen; loss of internet, power surge, etc. Please be patient and understanding.
Congratulations!
2020 EMPLOYEE OF THE YEAR DAVID ALVARADO, GOLF OPERATIONS

Happy New Year! Are you ready to put 2020 in the rear view? Although it’s been a very
trying year on many fronts, it has been an
excellent/busy year for golf, membership and
real estate which should carry us forward into
an exciting 2021. Before we move forward, let’s take a quick look back and recognize the winners of our last few events of 2020 (see next page).
As we learned in 2020, one really never knows
what’s coming down the road, but we’re
excited about getting the “fun” and “social” back in our golf events and our daily operation sometime in 2021! If there is anything I can
do to make your golf experience at the Club

World Handicap System (WHS) Stroke Allocation Changes for 2021 Effective January 15, 2021
The World Handicap System went into effect 1 year ago and it seems most everyone has adjusted nicely to the changes. One of the aspects of the World Handicap
System is a new and different way to handicap the holes (stroke allocation) which is based partly on the
actual course rating of the holes as well as where they fall in the round.
WHS administrators agreed on a simple, consistent and data-based approach that can be applied to any course in the
world. The conclusion was to base the stroke index table on overall hole difficulty relative to par as a starting point, then use the procedures that work well to provide equity in stroke and match play, including placing odds and evens
on different sides, avoiding consecutive low stroke index holes, and avoiding low stroke index holes at the beginning or end of a nine.
The South Carolina Golf Association (SCGA), using the parameters defined by the WHS, recommended a Stroke Index Progression for each of our courses. The Club’s Handicap Committee reviewed the information and made a
recommendation to the Golf Committee to adapt the Stroke Allocations as suggested. The Golf Committee voted to adopt the changes (see below) which were based on the Egret-white and Finch-yellow tees for both courses. These changes will go into effect January 15, 2021.
Determined by both USGA and worldwide research, the stroke index order is not really important in producing equitable results as long as the strokes are spread out, consecutive low strokes are avoided, and low strokes at the
beginning or end of each nine are avoided. So, applying the triad concept of using three-hole clusters (with the lowest stroke hole on each nine in the middle of the nine), spreading out low stroke holes, and avoiding consecutive low stroke holes produces a simple but effective method for stroke allocation.
It was important to generate a raw ranking based on the overall difficulty of each hole, which is where the Course
Rating data is used. Using Course Rating data, which factors in both effective playing length and obstacle ratings, provides a consistent method regardless of the makeup of players at the course. Since the maximum hole score allowed
for handicap purposes is based on a net double bogey, which is tied to the stroke index value, it is important to have the holes ranked in a general order of difficulty.
As with anything in life, change can be awkward at first, and it might take us a little while to adjust to these recommended changes, but we will learn to adapt to them. If you should have any questions about these new handicap stroke
allocations, please feel free to contact the Handicap Committee, the Golf Committee or one your PGA professionals at the Seabrook Island Club.

Sign Up for Golf Events & Book Tee Times As we prepare for the 2021 golf season, we wanted to remind everyone of the various ways to sign up for events and book tee times at the Seabrook Island Club.
Sign Up for Golf Events How to register and sign up for events: 1. **NEW** On your Phone with SIC App - Download the new Seabrook Island Club App from your App Store. This is the easiest, most convenient way to book tee times and sign up for Club golf events – it’s all you need!
In the App, choose “Golf Events,” then you will be
able to choose from Men’s, Ladies or Mixed Events.
2. On your Computer - Go to www.seabrookisland.com and select “Member Login” in the very top menu. Then
log in to the member website with your username and password. If you don’t remember your Club username and password, please call Lyndsey Arnold, 843-768-7805. On the second bar, click “Golf Events” on the
far right side and choose from Men’s, Ladies or Mixed Events.
All open for registration events will be listed in the directory, choose which event you would like to play, and follow the simple
directions to register. Some events require additional information for your registration
to be completed; it may ask for guest names, GHIN #, tees to play from, etc, so please complete all necessary boxes to complete the registration.
3. The old-fashioned way – call the Golf Pro Shop at 843-768-2529 and ask us to sign you up for an event or book a tee time.
Golf Genius App - Use Only for Live Scoring During Event Important for Successful Entry Please DISCONTINUE using the Golf Genius App to
SIGN UP for golf vents. The Golf Genius App should only be used for Live Scoring, Leaderboards and Results. Last
year we upgraded to Golf Genius Tournament Management, which syncs with our Jonas point of sale system. The Golf Genius App creates a different profile and confuses the system, so it thinks we have two of the same golfers.
The Golf Genius Mobile App is used for LIVE SCORING DURING AN EVENT. When using the GG mobile app
to live score, players will receive an email prior to play with a GGID (Golf Genius ID) for their foursome. Use the GGID
# to sign in. The app will ask to choose a golfer, then the scoring page will load to your first hole and you will be ready to
input scores for your round. Please post the GROSS score for each golfer on each hole. We ask that ONLY ONE player
keep the score for the group. The mobile app allows players to look at the leaderboard and know exactly how they stand during and after a competition.
If you have any questions or need any assistance with Golf Genius, do not hesitate to call the Golf Shop at 843-768-2529 or drop by for assistance.

How to Practice Better to Play Better Most people on the driving range
utilize the “block” practice method, described below. I think a change in their practice method could serve
them better when playing the game of golf. When we play golf, we are asked to: read, plan, and do. Read-
determine the next shot at hand
(120 yards, into the wind, to a back
left pin, water left and long with a bunker short right), plan (I hit my Pitching Wedge 130 yards, with a little right to left draw, there is a
tree behind the green that is perfect target), and do (hit the pitching wedge on your intended line on the green). It’s all about transfer
Transfer is the word motor learning scientists use to describe real learning. When they study practice and how it impacts skill acquisition, they always look at what the people can do the next day rather than the improvements they can see during the practice stage.
Transfer = How much of the improvements made in practice actually show up the next day or in the game. Block Practice
A traditional approach to practice that involves getting a high number of reps repeating the exact same movement over and over and over again (hitting 10 putts from the same spot) or (hitting 10 seven irons to the same flag). Block practice is best used to work on an individual change or feeling you are trying to incorporate (feeling the left heel roll to start your downswing).
Random Practice
A practice approach that randomizes reps – you never do the exact same thing twice (hitting 10 putts from different spots on the green).
Random leads to wayyyyyy more transfer – why?
In all of the studies, we see a huge difference between block and random practice during the transfer test (the one that measures real learning). This happens because during random practice (when we never do the same thing twice) we are forced to read, plan, and do before every single rep.
During block practice we simply repeat the previous movement and the reading and planning are eliminated from the equation.
Random short game practice
Block is easier to do, obviously, and will make us look better in practice. However, if we want to prepare to perform in an
actual game, random is the better option. You can do random practice for all aspects of your game, putting (putt to different pins on the green), pitching or chipping (the short
game area has three holes in it, hit shots from the same spot to different pins each time). Full swing-
hit a driver, then a nine iron, then a wedge, hit a
driver, 5-wood, then pitching wedge, vary both the club and target for each shot. Random practice will TRANSFER to the golf course and you will see all your hard work pay off with lower scores.
If you have any questions about practice or your golf
game, please inquire in the Golf Shop or ask one of your PGA Professionals.

About Yonex Yonex was founded by Minoru Yoneyama in Japan in the end of World War II. The company first started its involvement in the sports world in 1957 manufacturing badminton racquets. In 1969, Yonex started its endeavors in producing tennis racquets.
Known by its innovative technology, “Isometric design, top
of the line technology, and high quality control on its frames, Yonex is one of the leading brands in the tennis industry today.
Many famous players throughout the decades have been endorsed by Yonex, solidifying Yonex as a trusted brand. Some of the players include; Billie Jean King and Martina Navratilova (1980), Monica Selles (1990), Richard Krajicek and
Martina Hingis (1996), Marcelo Rios (1998), Lleyton Hewitt (2001), Elena Dementieva and Ana Ivanovic (2008). Nowadays Yonex sponsors Stan Wawrinka, Nick Kyrgios, Angelic Kerber, Naomi Osaka, and many other big names.
For more information about Yonex products, feel free to come talk to us at
the Racquet Club Pro Shop. We will be happy to lend you a demo so you can test some of the racquets!
A Tip for Getting Started at the Racquet Club Whether you are new to the sport or just coming back to the courts after years of not playing, my best suggestion would
be to start with a private lesson with one of our pros. In a controlled environment, you are likely to feel more comfortable
and will be able to get the most out of your first experience on the courts.
If you are new to Seabrook Island and would like to get
introduced to some of our members who play regularly, feel free to give us a call. The staff at the front desk can introduce
you to our member board where we keep your information so Rafael Nadal
group coordinators can contact you to come join their play.
Is it time for me to restring my racquet? The question we hear often is “do I need new strings” or “when do I need to restring my racquet?” The general “rule-of-thumb” is: have your racquet strung as many times a year as you play in a week. If you play twice a week, have your racquet strung at least every six months, or if you play four times a week, have it strung at least every three months.
Sometimes it may be okay to wait a little longer if the strings are still performing well and not showing wear, but it’s best to have it restrung regularly regardless. This will keep the racquet (and your game) performing at their best! Stop by the Racquet Club Pro Shop
anytime for a quick look at those strings and racquets, along with any questions
you may have! We would be glad to help you and your game! Robert Terry

Alan Fleming Update While the 37th Alan Fleming Senior Open Clay State Championship Tournament (“the Fleming”) originally scheduled for
October 2020 was cancelled due to the pandemic, organizers decided to go forward with the annual charity fundraising done in conjunction with the tournament. For the third consecutive year, the tournament committee’s designated charity was the Sea Island Hunger Awareness Foundation’s (“SHIAF”) Blessing Basket program.
Debbie Pickens, Tournament Chair, and Krista Tillman, Fundraising Chair, presented a check in the amount of $43,575 to
the charity on November 24th. Additional funds have been received bringing the total raised to a record breaking $45,000. George and Mary Fleck represented the Blessing Basket. A special guest was the Honorable John Gregg, Mayor of the Town of Seabrook Island.
The Alan Fleming tournament is one of the premier tournaments in the Southeast
attracting more than 250 senior tennis players, age 35 and up, from as many as
20 states. Originally established in the
early 1980s under the leadership of Alan Fleming (father of the then-Seabrook
Island touring pro and former Wimbledon and U.S. Open doubles champion, Peter
Fleming) the now, so-named tournament, has grown to become a key event for the

Article by Caitlin McCauley The first time I rode a horse was in Ireland when I was three. A few years later in Charlotte, my mum took me to a
birthday party at a barn nearby where many of my friends
rode. Ever since then, I’ve been hooked. I took lessons for a few years, and when I turned eight, my parents leased my
first pony, Mikey! This started a constant lifestyle of going to the barn every day.
Then came one of the frustrating moments of my life. I fell
off at the first jump of one of the biggest shows I had been to. This was the start of a difficult few months.
Although Flipper and I seemed perfect on paper, I knew it
was time to part ways and start looking for another horse. And for the first time in my riding life, my confidence had
been knocked, and this constant in my life had changed. I took a little break and stopped riding as much, until Charles
found another horse for me. He ended up finding Theo, a 16.3 In the summertime, my family would spend time on Seabrook. As my riding became more serious, we would
bring whatever horse I was leasing to Seabrook to vacation
with us. When I was 13, we moved to Seabrook full time. It was really nice to have the barn, and my coach, Charles Hairfield, as a constant during this change. I started riding at the SBI barn almost daily and Charles soon found a
horse named Flipper for me to ride. Flipper and I had a
really successful year and we were winning many shows, including qualifying for the SC Governor’s Cup Finals at the end of 2019.
bay Irish Sport horse, that has so much energy. This forced me
to decide between taking my riding to the next level or finding another sport.
Thanks to the encouragement of Charles and my parents, I chose Theo. He and I quickly bonded and my riding life has
never been more rewarding. We started training him to not be
so nervous when being ridden and adjusted him to the horse show life. Theo and I went to many PSJ shows and started
winning. At the PSJ end of year awards for 2020, we ended up winning our division!
Now that Theo and I have had much success so far, my goal is to stay
consistent in winning classes and moving up to bigger shows. I want to
thank Charles, Allie, and the Seabrook team for providing a place to ride that is so wonderful and encouraging.
