From the GM

Dear Members,

Your feedback throughout 2022 was invaluable, and we all want to thank you. Below are some adjustments and newness we are infusing into your club experiences.

ISLAND HOUSE

Starting on June 14, The Island House will be hosting Bingo Nights on Wednesdays during the summer months.

PELICAN'S NEST

When we open for the season, we hope to have our rolldown weather shades and our new heaters for when the weather drops. Our menu will have two versions, one catering to a higher-level production and a second designed to allow the kitchen team to handle 600-750 covers per day.

OSPREY CAFE

You asked for healthier foods, and Chef Daniel delivers a signature freshly made sandwich, or grain bowls to which you can add protein. We will still have Christine's wonderful pastries and our Islandwide favorite soft-served ice cream.

CAP'N SAMS' BAR & GRILL

From the day the Beach Club opens, Cap'n Sams' will always serve food. Starting with grab-n-go sandwiches, salads, and snacks to firing up the grills once summer kicks in, we will always have something for your enjoyment. Cap'n Sams' Grill

will now extend its hours on Tuesdays and Thursdays when we have "Member" Nights at Pelican's Nest.

OCEAN TERRACE

At Ocean Terrace, we will be experimenting with two new initiatives. First, for those who want a "beach" experience, we have carved out a small section of the beach that will hold approximately 25 lounges and a couple of relaxing hammocks. We recognize it is a small space, but we wanted to elevate where possible. Once summertime is upon us, we will roll out a new service platform where you can place a food or drink order, which will be delivered to your table. There will likely be growing pains, so please know we will work through the process to provide the best possible service. You will still have access to the Pour My Station and snacks, so please help yourself whenever you would like.

BEACH CLUB POOLS

This year we will have staffing for a Pool Monitor, Restroom Attendants, and Security. Please let us know if you see something improper, and we will address it. Our Security Team will be focused this year inside the gates, so know that they won't be at the front greeting and opening the gate. You will need your Amenity Card for not only access but towels. Towels are still complimentary for members, which must have one on each chair. Visitors will have a cap placed on the amount for towels, so if they join us for 3 days ($50 max), or 7 days ($80 max), we are looking to lower the total expenditure. Next year we hope to have those costs added to the Amenity Cards.

4

TAKE OUT NIGHTS

This summer, we are proud to roll out our "Takeout" menu for those nights you may not want to cook. Chef Daniel has created three themes, and we will be rotating through them June-August. Please note the order deadline and pick-up time.

Our goal in 2023 is to continue building upon your member experience, and we hope you will enjoy what we have created. I am always available to text or email if there is something we can improve upon.

All my best.

RECIPE FROM PASTRY CHEF CHRISTINE

BLUEBERRY SCONES

INGREDIENTS

2 cups all-purpose flour

1/3 cup granulated sugar

1/2 teaspoon salt

1 tablespoon baking powder

1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter, grated and very cold or frozen

1/2 cup buttermilk or heavy cream, plus more for brushing on top

1 large egg

2 teaspoons vanilla extract

1 cup fresh or frozen blueberries

VANILLA GLAZE INGREDIENTS

1 cup powdered sugar

1 to 2 tablespoons milk (or water)

1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla extract

DIRECTIONS

Whisk together flour, sugar, salt, and baking powder in a large bowl. Using a pastry blender or your hands, cut in butter until mixture is crumbly.

Whisk together egg, buttermilk, and vanilla extract in a small bowl. Add liquid ingredients and blueberries to dry ingredients and stir until moistened, and mixture is well combined and holds together in a ball.

Sprinkle a small amount of flour onto parchment paper or a counter.

Press dough into 8-inch circle, about ¾ inch thick. Brush the top with additional buttermilk.

Using a sharp knife, cut circle into 8 wedges. Divide triangles and place them on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper or a silicone baking

mat, leaving enough space for the scones to expand when cooked.

Place scones in the refrigerator for 20 minutes. While scones chill, preheat oven to 400°F.

Bake scones for 20 to 25 minutes or until golden brown. Remove from oven and cool slightly.

Whisk together powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla extract in a small bowl until smooth. Drizzle the tops of each scone generously with vanilla glaze.

Serve warm or let cool completely to room temperature and store in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days.

hard to come by.

As we all know, Pickleball has become one of the more sought after activities on the island. We are building four more Pickleball courts; however, until then, courts and Open Play sessions are getting booked quickly. Please plan your reservations ahead to avoid any disappointment when looking for court times.

One of the most extraordinary characteristics of the Racquet Club community is its welcoming attitude towards new Members and their guests. Let us all keep that in mind and show everyone our famous Southern Hospitality during the busy seasons. Let us all be cordial around the Racquet Sports facility to make this season another exceptional one!

If you have questions about your membership or any other aspect of the Racquet Club, please get in touch with me via email or phone.

We look forward to another fantastic Spring Season at the Racquet Club.

CONSTRUCTION PROJECT - LANDSCAPE & HARDSCAPE

Much has been achieved since breaking ground in November of last year— the irrigation and landscape surrounding courts 11 through 14 were completed at the end of January 2023. Furthermore, the new event lawn, previously called the front lawn, has just been completed including work on the irrigation and drainage. There is a brand new design incorporating new sidewalks around the entire facility, including behind center court.

The landscape hardscape scope of work has been drawn-out, and we understand the inconveniences throughout this process. Much more is to come in this phase as we move work areas. Please take notice of the pedestrian traffic around the facility and follow the posted signs to keep the facility open while ensuring everyone's safety.

PRO-SHOP RENOVATION

Monteith Construction was selected as the General Contractor to conduct the Pro-shop renovations at the Racquet Club. Monteith Construction is well known in Charleston for their outstanding work.

The project timeline is tight. Demolition started on February 13, with an expected end date around the beginning of June, pending permit approvals.

As mentioned, the Racquet Club Pro shop will close until renovations are completed. The former Golf Starter Shack has been relocated to the sidewalk in our parking lot. The front desk will conduct services from the Golf Shack (now the Racquet Club Shack) during construction.

Breakdown of the operations during construction time:

MERCHANDISE:

• Stringing service will remain available for Members at all times.

• Pro-Shop Reopening Day - MARCH 8 at Landfall Way

HOURS OF OPERATIONS - TBD

CHECK-IN FOR PLAY AND LESSONS:

• Front Desk staff will be conducting check-ins from the Starter Shack.

• Group Coordinator can send ONE representative from EACH court to check in.

CHECK-INS are still MANDATORY.

BATHROOMS:

• Bathrooms will remain operational for as long as possible.

• In case of an emergency closure, we will contact the Members.

OTHER SERVICES PROVIDED FROM THE SHACK:

Towels

Balls for Sale

Grips and strings for sale

Drinks for sale

Demos for rent

To make this period as easy as possible for all of us (Racquet Club staff, members of the construction team, and other Club Members), we ask for your understanding and cooperation. We look forward to the end of the construction period and presenting you with an immensely improved Racquet Club that all Members will enjoy.

To the right is a sneak peek at what to expect!

10

Due to facility upgrades, the Social Event Calendar at the Racquet Club is paused. However, if you are looking for something different to do and to change the pace of your Racquet Club activities, below are two new exciting events coming up.

PICKLEBALL INTER-CLUB

As Pickleball grows in popularity daily, our ability to expand our offerings to the Seabrook Picklers grows. This year we are proud to host our first Pickleball Inter-Club ever!

On March 15, sixteen of our avid pickleball players will head to Cassique to represent Seabrook at a friendly but competitive round-robin event!

As Cassique hosts the first round of the InterClub, Seabrook Island Racquet Club will host the second round. The home match date is still to be determined. If you are interested in taking part in the event, stay tuned! We will be releasing information to sign-up for the home game shortly!

NSMTA TOURNAMENT AT SEABROOK ISLAND RACQUET CLUB

From March 31 to April 2, the Seabrook Island Racquet Club will host a doubles-only team tennis event. This tournament is not a sanctioned USTA

or league event. The event will be organized by NSMTA (National Senior Men's Tennis Association) members. Throughout the year, the group organizes eight events around the Southeast.

This year, Tommy Bunch, a Member of the Seabrook Island Club and the NSMTA, has reached out in lieu of the NSMTA asking for the Seabrook Island Racquet Club to become a hosting site for one of their events. We gladly accepted the opportunity to bring more entertainment to our Members!

As mentioned, the tournament will be hosted from March 31 to April 2. Four teams have committed to the event; 2 Carolina teams, 1 NSMTA team, and 1 Seabrook team. Other players from the Southeast have expressed interest in the event, and we expect to have six teams playing in the tournament.

The level of play is comparable to the Alan Fleming tournament, although the format is somewhat different. A total of six doubles teams complete a team. The teams will play against each other in a round-robin format having the philospophy of the NSMTA in mind "having fun at a high-level competition."

Please stop by the Racquet Club to enjoy a day of high-level competition and to cheer for your fellow Seabrookers!

Equestrian

Hours of Operation

Monday – Saturday: 7:30 AM – 3:30 PM

Sunday: Closed to the Public

The Seabrook Island Club Equestrian Center's first Equestrian 101 class of 2023 was a huge success, thanks to strong participation and engagement from club members. On Monday, February 13 at 1 PM, our two teachers, Alex and Stewart, put the finishing touches on their presentations, grabbed their horses, and went to the front office to greet Members. Instead of the expected five participants, over twenty Members walked happily up the driveway to join the class. We were off to a great start!

The class started with the horses safely secured in the cross ties and introductions made. Members learned the basic horse anatomy of each major region of the horse and some fun facts, such as how horses can sleep standing up! We also covered some of the major muscles and how they assisted the horse in its movement. Then we moved on to a demonstration of how to groom and care for a horse, including a discussion of diet, dental care, and routine hoof maintenance.

12

The following are a few of the most popular questions:

Q: How much does a horse eat?

A: Horses eat about 2% of their body weight a day.

Q: How much does the average horse weigh?

A: Horses vary in height and weight. The average is around 1000 lbs.

Q: Why do some wear horseshoes ("shoes")?

A: Horses wear shoes to protect their hooves from bruises or other injuries.

Q: How many times a year do they see the vet?

A: Most healthy horses see the vet twice yearly for routine shots and a check-up.

Q: What kind of saddles do the trail and beach horses wear?

A: Seabrook's trail and beach horses wear Western tack, which is easily discernible by the large "horn" at the front of the saddle.

The class wrapped up with a complete grooming demonstration using a curry comb to bring underlying dirt to the surface, a stiff brush to remove dirt, and a soft brush to remove dirt from sensitive areas such as the legs. Members put their equine knowledge into practice to thoroughly groom one of the Seabrook trail and beach horses. It was a happy day for both humans and equines.

We look forward to seeing new Members in March and would love to receive feedback and topic ideas at equestrian@seabrookisland.com.

SPRING BREAK RESERVATIONS

Spring Break is rapidly approaching, and we ask you to get your reservations in as early as possible. We look forward to seeing you at the Equestrian Center. We would love to tell you you about an unique opportunity involving Thoroughbreds and the Retired Racehorse Project, just give us a call at 843.768.7541.

Golf Operations

Winter came and went (or was it ever here?), and Spring golf has arrived at the Club. I hope you've been able to get out on our two pristine golf courses to enjoy the beautiful green turf our Maintenance Team has groomed to perfection.

The spring event schedule is in full swing, and we've played some exciting tournaments already. Unfortunately, the first Ladies 9 & Wine and Fun Friday were rained out, but a SILGA Interclub at Briar's and some very competitive Four-Ball matches amongst the men and SILGA kept the schedule moving forward.

The MGA Chili Bowl and SILGA Souper Bowl were the most significant events of January and February. Both these events kick off the year for the two leagues. SILGA hosted an interclub with Briar's Creek and Daniel Island on Wednesday, February 15, with 56 ladies participating. A great day was had by all who participated in each of these events. Tournament results are listed on the right.

In 2022, the MGA started a new program where each month's top point winner won the Player of the Month (POM) honor and a Club gift certificate. These 12 POM winners competed in the January season-ending Player of the Year (POY) competition. It was a tightly contested, 18-hole match, and the Inaugural Player of the Year honor went to Steve Gadd, with Mike Mansfield (both pictured) finishing a close 2nd.

The Club's annual marquee ladies' golf event, the Ladies Member – Guest Invitational, has moved from fall to spring this year. Invitations went out in late February and the event is now fully subscribed. Click here to register on the waitlist www.golfgenius. com/ggid/padduk/register. The event is scheduled for March 31 and April 1, call the golf shop if you have any questions. 843.768.2529.

Hours of Operation

Many exciting new things are happening at the Club and in our golf programs. As always, if there's anything I can do to make your golf experience at the Club more enjoyable (and fun!), please do not hesitate to let me know.

Inside the Grass

The Agronomy staff will be very busy over the next few months with projects that will affect the courses' maintenance over the next year. The largest of the projects will be pruning all palm trees throughout the courses. The staff will use a lift to prune all dead plant materials off each tree on both sides of each hole up to the out-of-bounds lines. Unfortunately, the staff could not perform this task due to labor shortages last year, so we will have two years of dead material to remove and clean up. The advantage of completing this project is that throughout the year, after storms, a cleaned palm tree produces little debris from major thunderstorms or, worse hurricanes. When the trees were not pruned in past years, it would take several days to clean up debris after a storm; thus, the pruning process saves on labor and playability during the year. The staff will be pruning the wax myrtles on the beach by 14 tee in March, so the ocean view is unimpeded during the year. This will take several weeks to complete, so be on the lookout for a better viewing experience around Ocean Winds. Also, during the next few months, the theme for our mowing and heights of cut will be low and often. We will frequently lower cutting heights on fairways, tees, and greens and mow each area more often. With the winter overseed firmly established, the staff needs to ensure that the rye and greens overseed are lowered dramatically to get as much sunlight as possible down to the parent stand of bermudagrass. This helps the Bermuda come out of dormancy and compete with the dominant winter stand throughout the spring. The apparent benefit of doing so is that the place will play much faster as the fairways allow more ball roll, and the greens will putt much quicker.

Finally, Golf.com recently posted an article called "13 Common Misconceptions about how Golf Courses Work," which has excellent reminders for each of us as players. Several notable items on the list are #2, that the divot bottles are available for a reason. Yes, please fill your divots when you play so that you are a good steward of your courses. Continuing, #4 and #5 deal with bunkers, with #5 being very pertinent in saying that "… they're supposed to be hazards" and "they should be tough to hit out of." If you ask most Golf Course Superintendents at any club, bunkers would probably be the most complained about area of the course.

Looking at our surveys daily, this would be the case for us. We spend a ton of labor and resources to try to make the bunkers as playable as possible, but please remember that they are hazards with an element that takes work to control: sand. Dry sand, wet sand, traffic in and out, wind, and storms make bunkers the most challenging part of a golf course to control.

That is why it is called a hazard. A few more on the list are #6 and #7, ball marks. Please fix them as well as someone else's. Another notable is #10 "you do not want the greens as fast as you think." With a full golf course, speedy greens are fun to putt on, but they are not conducive to fast play and would cause a long 18 holes. We do everything we can to keep our green speeds around 11 on the Stimpmeter, which tends to be a perfect green speed that does not terrify you to putt on. The list is full of good reminders from Superintendents nationwide who want the best for the game and the courses we play on. We hope you have a great spring season, and we will see you on the course!

Shops

Spring is in the air! With warm weather approaching, now is the perfect time to update your golf wardrobe with new spring and summer pieces. We have some fabulous collections arriving in an exciting array of colors and styles over the next couple of months.

First up in the Pro Shop for the gentleman will be the Icelandic collection from Greyson . This high fashion brand out of New York makes excellent fun prints in fabulous fabrications that can easily be worn on and off the course. This collection features various bold colors, including Aurora Blue, Mauve Mist, and Storm. Next up will be a collection from Holderness & Bourne highlighting shamrock green to help get us in the St. Patty's spirit! Also due to arrive in the coming weeks are a few more of our Member's favorites; Johnnie-O, Turtleson, FootJoy, Travis Mathew , and of course, our local favorite, Harlestons .

Ladies, we also have some fabulous collections coming your way as well. The first will be from the fashion-forward GG Blue , featuring a tropical and

plaid print. The group will be in a unique Matcha Green color and will sell out fast as the color is gorgeous and perfect for the spring. Next will be a collection of sun protection and cooling shirts from IBKUL . Most of you are familiar with this company, but if not, all their shirts feature moisture-wicking fabric with their exclusive patented icefil cooling technology. This technology allows the material to combine with your body's perspiration to create a thermal cooling reaction that lowers your skin temperature up to five degrees, which helps tremendously in our hot and humid weather. Another on-trend brand, Daily Sports , will return to our shop this spring in a navy and white safari print. Make sure to grab one of the bags or visors in this print to complete your look. Also arriving over the next several weeks are Under Armour, Fairway & Greene, and EP

For those of you who were a fan of the Vineyard Vines fall collection, their spring collection is due to arrive in late March. The fall collection sold out quickly, we expect the same from this great-looking group.
