Out There on the east coast, sandwiched between the sand and the sky, lies Great Yarmouth. A glorious old seaside town jam-packed with twinkling lights and traditional family fun. Against this historic backdrop, the Out There Festival explodes on to the streets with an entirely FREE world-class programme of circus, crazy street arts, comedy and community spirit.

ACROBATICS CIRCUS CLOWNING COMEDY DANCE EXHIBITION JUGGLING MUSIC THEATRE TRAMPOLINING URBAN ARTS

Welcome! This year is Circus250, a fantastic national celebration of circus – 250 years since Philip Astley drew a circle in the ground on a patch of wasteland in London and filled it full of horses, acrobats and clowns, creating the first modern-day circus. Great Yarmouth is proud to be one of six Cities of Circus which are the focal point of these celebrations. To mark it, we welcome the return of Générik Vapeur. This iconic French street arts company are back with a special anniversary edition of their explosive show, Bivouac. In Bivoauc250 (p08-09), they’ll be collaborating with Gorilla Circus and 250 local people to produce a sprawling circus celebration across the streets of the town. As we enter the second decade of the festival, we continue to bring you the very best circus and street arts from the UK and across the globe. Around 100 performers from ten nations join us including an exciting showcase of Catalan and Balearic artists. Six festival shows have been created in part, or whole, here in Great Yarmouth at our Drill House and we present 12 world and UK premieres. Thanks again go to our long-term partners at Great Yarmouth Borough Council and Arts Council England and to all the supporters whose vision and imagination is helping the continued success of Out There. Join us! Joe Mackintosh, Director

Great Yarmouth Circus Town A little slice of Circus by the sea The national Circus250 celebration places Great Yarmouth as one of the country’s six Cities of Circus. 250 years ago, on an abandoned patch of land near London’s Waterloo, showman, entrepreneur and equestrian rider Philip Astley drew out a circle in the ground and filled it with astounding physical acts. This spectacle was the world’s very first circus. By the mid-19th century, circuses – both touring and in built venues – were firmly established with audiences nationwide. In 1844 the railway arrived in Great Yarmouth, heralding the birth of its Victorian tourism boom. Only a year later, the circus came to town as Cooke’s Equestrian Circus erected a ‘wooden structure’ on Theatre Plain. It was from this circus that Nelson the clown performed his ‘foolish exhibition’ that led to the 1845 Suspension Bridge Disaster. Drawn in a tub by four geese up the river, thousands gathered on the riverbank and bridge to watch the feat. The bridge collapsed leading to the deaths of 79 people, many of them children.

24

From the 1860s through to the 1880s, a number of circus buildings sprung up across Great Yarmouth. Only to disappear again in a matter of years.

This swift coming and going of circus and other theatre buildings was fairly common across the country as they fell victim to fire, failure or rapid urban developments. Travelling circuses, large and small, continued to visit the town. The largest of which was the famous Buffalo Bill Cody’s in 1903. That same year, showman George Gilbert built the Hippodrome, which has remained a consistent presence on Great Yarmouth’s seafront. Reputedly Charlie Chaplin and Harry Houdini graced its ring (one of only four in the world with the famous water feature). The venue was taken over by current owner, Peter Jay and his father in the late 70s. Introducing Peter’s modern vision of circus, with light shows and pop music, the Hippodrome continues to go from strength to strength – and is now the only ‘total circus’ building left in the country. In 2008 the Out There Festival made its debut, bringing a programme of exciting, innovative international circus and street arts to thousands of people in the streets, parks and venues across Great Yarmouth. And the rest, as they say, is history… Written by Sascha Goslin with the kind help of Colin Tooke and Peter Jay
