What can an arts festival contribute to democracy? How can a large scale festival act to reimagine and reframe the experiences of our everyday public space? These are some of the questions we asked ourselves as we approached this year’s festival. With activist groups like Extinction Rebellion employing creative tools such as performance and large scale installation art to get their messages across, we’ve been inspired to revisit the history of outdoor arts and its place within wider cultural democracy. In the spirit of the times, we’ve taken over a part of the marketplace and dubbed it the Liberty Zone; a carefully curated collection of shows exploring threads of democracy, oppression and revolution. We once again work with our associate artists, Cocoloco whose exuberant performance about flamboyant dictators, Surrender (p06) will lead this newly created nation state. The Saturday Night Spectacular this year is also of huge significance. Thank You For Having Us (p10) is the result of ten years of cooperation between SeaChange Arts and French street art titans, Générik Vapeur who have formed a collaborative performance with the brilliant and young UK company, Gorilla Circus. The performance is the first major large scale outdoor show made by a UK and French company for about 25 years. More than 130 artists from nine different nations join us this year to form an incredible line-up of over 100 hours of entirely free entertainment. Nine world premieres, 12 UK premieres and 16 shows we’ve co-produced all come together to create an outstanding vision of a seaside town come to life with an innovative programme of international excellence. The twelfth year of the Out There Festival is looking like an absolute humdinger! Joe Mackintosh, Director

WE SUGGEST FOR YOUR GREAT DAY OUT… but every little helps!

Volunteer AT Out There! Enthusiastic? Good with people? Want to be a part of this year’s festival? We’re looking to recruit a small, dedicated team of festival volunteers to support us with publicising the festival, stewarding and show production. If you want to get ‘out there’ and be part of this, drop us a line at hello@seachangearts.org.uk

KEY Performances take place around the town on numbered ‘pitches’. Their locations are shown on site plan on p30. We like to think most shows are family friendly, so on some we provide age guidance or advisories. Shows particularly suitable for young children. Shows particularly suitable for hard of hearing/deaf audiences.

This year we’ve denominated each show with a zone. Here is a brief overview of the locations around Great Yarmouth that we will inspire with a touch of wonder and excitement.

STREET THEATRE Those of you who have nothing to give, give your love to Dr YaYa. The benevolent leader, along with his exuberant sidekick Lady YaYa, has liberated the market place in the name of…well, liberty we guess, and dubbed it The Liberty Zone! A mighty performance of revolution without mutiny complete with manifesto discussions, fashion shows, quiz games, musical border guards and even a ceremony of medals for those most faithful to the regime. Join cocoloco in a hilarious and idiosyncratic mashup of all flamboyant dictators.

RoarRace STREET RACING Place your bets ladies and gentlemen, there’s money to be made from the screeching of toddlers! A race on tricycles that react to sound; the louder the driver can shout, the faster they go. The crowd can place bets on which toddler will win. One day our children must learn; the harder you scream, the more you achieve in life.

The Troubouch brothers equip themselves with a barbecue, a bike, a teeterboard and some tender sausages to give you a show of laughter, tears and even some tenderness of their own.

A young Korean artist weaves a gigantic cobweb made of intertwined strings connecting our common sensitivities to each other. At the starting point, there is a stone. With the stone, there is a string. It is rolled up, tangled and binding. Can we come together and untangle the structures that govern us?

CALL OUT FOR VOLUNTEERS!

Lightbearers and environmental guardians needed! Générik Vapeur frequently integrate their spectacular world class performances with the spirit of local communities. We’re looking for twelve performance volunteers and five lightbearers (preferably with stage lighting experience) to be a part of Thank You For Having Us (must be 18+). For further information visit outtherefestival.com

STREET THEATRE The Anglo-French alliance Générik Vapeur and Gorilla Circus return with a fantastic new 2019 creation. The street art titans team up once again to bring us the new world; the 8th continent, a plastic filled artificial island formed in the North Pacific Gyre. A grand piano road train and fire-powered trollies charge through the streets in this high-octane, socio-political call to arms for humanity’s future; prompting us to explore if our reckless pursuit of technology at the cost of the natural world would be the end of life as we know it. Follow the procession starting from Trafalgar Road, in a vortex of waste as a cast of odd bobs and environmental guardians sweep up the streets of Great Yarmouth in a circus swirl.
