MINKE WHALES, Australia A Curious Company / Text and Photos by Justin Gilligan
Minke whales gather in the waters of the Australian Great Barrier Reef every winter. They provide for a unique diving experience, and leave their human companions questioning: who is watching who? Â It is the last week of June at the Great Barrier. Southeastern winds sweep the sea. It looks as just one more day in the upper deck of Elizabeth Ell as we sail between Agincourt and Ribbon reefs, 120 Km northeast of Port Douglas, our departure point. The smooth swinging of the boat, the sound of waves and the warm tropical sun create an hypnotic effect, which transports us far from our busy and hassled lives in the faraway continent.

A call comes from the upper deck of the boat: “Minkes to starboard!” The shiny backs of three minke whales have just broken the surface beside the boat. Elegant and torpedo-shaped, minkes reach some seven meters in length and possess a dark color, with the exception of a white and grey patch above their flippers, which are disproportionately small. Minkes are intimately related to Blue and Humpback whales, and despite their size are rather energetic and maintain the rhythm following our vessel among the reefs on speeds topping 20 knots (37 Km/hour). In the same way the whales appeared, they are gone. A quick encounter which would have passed unnoticed if not for the presence aboard of Dr. Alastair Birtles, Professor of Environmental Management and Ecotourism at the James Cook University. Alastair is constantly at watch during the minke whale season in the Great Barrier Reef (between June and July). We have great difficulty in following the scientist´s sharp eyes which scan the horizon waiting for his beloved “research subjects”.

DESTINATION |Australia – Minke Whales | Text and photos by Justin Gilligan He scribbles notes in his notepad about the encounter, documenting their numbers and size, the number of breaths taken, position and time when the whales were sighted, the direction they were swimming, and the presence of any distinctive markings. No aspect of the encounter goes unrecorded. It is the 16th year in which Alastair comes to study the whales as the leader of an enthusiastic research team made of post-grade students and volunteers, known as the Minke Whale Project. His coat doubles as a mobile stationery store fully supplied with note pads, pens, pencils and sunscreen. Dark Ray-ban glasses protect his eyes from the tropical sun, and a sunscreen blotch is permanently stained on his face and nose, above his beard, and below his wide-rimmed hat. “There is so much about minke whales that we still don´t know”, says Alastair scanning the horizon with his eyes. “This is a unique opportunity for researchers, in partnership with local tour operators, as it provides an amazing opportunity to deepen our knowledge, benefitting everyone involved.”

It is the first encounter with the minkes in our trip, a seven-day adventure searching for whales, organized by John and Linda Rumney from Eye to Eye Marine Encounters. An expedition with an emotional, educational appeal. By donating three places in the vessel for the research project, Eye to Eye not only ensures the continuity of the Minke Whale Project´s efforts, but also provides its passengers with an enjoyable learning experience. “This is much more than ecotourism. Researchers contribute to an experience with aggregated value, which will last forever in the memories of our clients, and at the same time allows for the research work of the Minke Whale Project to continue”.

John and Linda are veritable icons of the Great Barrier Reef. Around 1978, John was working as a commercial fisherman in these waters, but by the early 1980´s found his true calling as a tour operator and conservationist. “I always helped government researchers and scientists to study the reef, and they told me about the grave lack of funding for this kind of work”, says John. “Therefore, this was the way in which the idea of the collaborative projects between tourist and scientists was born”.

Right after this awakening, John acquainted himself with Alastair and Dr. peter Arnold, Senior Curator of Natural History at the Museum of Tropical Queensland. His work with minke whales became the first project of Undersea Explorer, a ship which offered the most exciting trips in the Great Barrier Reef during the 1980´s and 90´s. Its mission was to develop protocols for divers to swim with minke whales and at the same time maximize the positive experience for all participants. The Codes of Conduct which they developed continue to provide orientation for human interactions with dwarf minke whales up to this day. Later, during the evening, Alastair gave us the first of a series of presentations about research in the Great Barrier Reef. “We are on the verge of embarking into something unique; there is no other place on Earth where we have this many encounters with whales of this species”.

Passengers, crew and volunteers aboard the research vessel are invited to get involved with the Project. “You do not need to be an academic to make minke observations, and this is why everyone can get involved”, says Alastair. “You might even not dream of minkes today, but after we have a decent encounter in the next few days, the experience should take root into your dreams for the rest of your life”.

Why do these whales seasonally visit the Australian Great Barrier Reef continues to be one of the greatest mysteries about minkes. A few calves have been seen there over the years, suggesting to researchers that these whales might be mating and nursery grounds for them. Regardless of motive, these warm waters attract the whales, which in turn attract tourists and scientists, anxious for an intimate encounter with these amazing animals.

Although the whales themselves began this contact, at first they are very wary, doing wide circles around the Elizabeth Ell. A short time after surfacing, they vanished and reappeared on the opposite side of our boat. The only sign that they were still in the area were their small dorsal fins which rise gently, breaking the surface from time to time. several minutes have passed before John and Alastair confirm that this could be the first opportunity for diving with the whales. The crew releases 30 meters of floating rope, tied to spaced rings aimed at giving more safety. John slowly swims along the rope, keeping an eye on the whales. “It´s time to get in the water, four minkes under the boat”, he shouts, raising his head above the water.

In a mix of adrenaline and emotion we prepare for our first minke encounter. We slide out of the wet deck, the water is warm and we advance in a single line along the rope to position ourselves. Some of us hold the rope with the hands, while others use their feet or waist to keep the hands free for taking photos and video. Alastair is on the back of the line, frantically taking notes in an underwater note pad, and taking identification pictures with a camera tied to his wrist.

As if coming out of nowhere, the distinctive shape of a minke materializes in front of us. It barely seems to move, and with great subtlety and grace passes only ten meters away. The curious eye of the minke studies us, with a wrinkled eyelid which resembles the human eye a lot. Two whales with rather similar spot patterns pass by us with the same curiosity. In many countries it is forbidden to swim with or interact in any manner with whales, and therefore we are very lucky to be living this unique encounter. The main focus of research is to explore the links between Social Science and Behavioral Ecology to control the impact of this activity on whales. “We cannot control the whales, so researchers need to learn how to manage people during this type of encounter”, says Alastair. As a result, encounters take place under strict rules defined in the permits issued by the Marine Park and in the Code of Conduct. Although the number of authorized operators has grown (to nine) since it began, these two regulatory tools are aimed at ensuring that every encounter happens in the animals´ comfort zone. “We are trying to understand what goes on in the heads and hearts of people, and this has been the most efficient way to guide the management of these encounters”, says Alastair. Back in the water, whales gain confidence and become more curious and pass nearer before vanishing in the blue.

Alastair was working all the time, recording every passing whale. A whale came close to the end of the rope and raised its head out of the water, standing there for a few seconds before sinking slowly back to the deep. Another repeatedly raised her head above the surface and swam along the entire rope, an intriguing behavior. Eventually, the more active whales left the group of divers ecstatic in the company of another, more curious and calm group of three whales swimming by themselves. These whales were calmer and more confident, lowly passing by all their curious human companions. Still at the end of the rope, Alastair seemed to already have a bookful of notes where he tried to identify each whale from the encounters using color patterns, markings and scars caused by sharks or hunting or fishing activities. For the Minke Whale Project, these notes are the starting point for a data bank, and combined with photos and videos can be compared with previous records to determine when and where the whales were seen during past seasons. Eight hours have passed since that first minke was sighted at Lighthouse Bommie, and they stayed with us all day long. Alastair was alone at the end of the rope, having been there the whole time, and recorded even the last sigh of the last whale to leave the scene that day. At the end of the trip, in which we spent more than 20 hours in the water with more than 60 individual whales, and despite having formed long-lasting friendships among us and experiencing some of the most exciting dives of the Great Barrier Reef, it is the memory of our inquisitive companions which now populate our dreams.

It also corresponds to the best South American female mark and has placed her in Second in the World ranking for this modality this year. This mark was also an Absolute Record, that is, the deepest both for males and females in the competition. The contest was called Little Blue Hole and was organized by friends and partner AIDA Instructors Brian and Wendy. She was the first in the water, which is great as in that way she did not feel the pressure from other divers and was able to keep her mind well focused on the dive.

MALDIVES The Republic of Maldives is a nation made of 1,196 islands, of which 203 are inhabited. These are located in the Indian Ocean, south of Asia and grouped in 26 atolls, with Male as the capital. The climate is tropical and wet with an almost constant temperature all year long, rarely below 25°C. The two annual monsoons determine its climate; the “dry” winter monsoon goes from November to March and is the coolest season and the wet monsoon goes from May to November, packing more wind and rainfall.

It has the distinction of having the “lowest” islands in the world, with a maximum height of two meters, therefore very vulnerable to sea level rises. Besides, it´s also one of the most spread out countries in the world, due to the distribution of its atolls. Tourism is the true engine of the Maldives. With its beautiful beaches, the colors of its waters and the abundant underwater life, it is one of the best dive destinations in the world.

I had never visited these beautiful islands, maybe because I had the impression of too many people there or a belief in the bad shape of its corals, and ended up venturing out to other destinations. Finally I was able to get to know this paradise, thanks to an invitation by Abando Dive, a Spanish Tour Operator specialized in dive trips, to take pictures for its next catalogue. There are few places in the world where at the end of your trip you are left with the impression that the experiences lived there will be impossible to surpass. This is the Maldives, a paradise for all divers.

ARRIVAL AT THE MALDIVES Already at the Male airport, we were greeted by the Abando Maldives dive team, an adorable couple who would take us aboard the Maldivian Dream to visit the best dive sites in the Maldives. It´s a boat geared up for comfort, with excellent installations. Besides, for the passengers´ ease it has another support boat, called “dhoni”, where dive gear and compressors are kept. The boat has free Nitrox, which we rather appreciated since we did more than three dives per day.

It is rather common to find several types of sharks, napoleon wrasse or schools of different fish species along the way. After passing through the channel to the open sea, currents weaken and we can calmly enjoy the corals and all the existing diversity of life. Finally, we can do very nice dive walls which are great in different depths. The water is generally very clear and this type of dive is perfect for a wide angle lens, as the landscape found here amazes all photographers. Turtles and manta rays, as well as black corals and gorgonians, are often found.

Types of Dives Normally in the Maldives one can do three different types of dives. We can dive inside an atoll, where depth is always less than 25 meters and without currents. Another option is to dive in the atoll straits where they communicate with the open sea. In this type of dive we should always jump in the water quickly and with the BC fully deflated, to save time and effort, as there can be strong currents.

THE DIVES The first dive we did was at North Male Atoll in Lankan Beru, and already gave us a sample of what was to come. Big schools of snappers passing in front of us and posing for my camera, a turtle indifferent to my presence while eating a soft coral, plus several anemones with their clownfish, making any dive time too short for underwater photographers. Honestly, for s single dive and knowing it was just the beginning, it raised my expectations for the rest of the trip a lot.

We kept going south doing ever better dives: the Kudah Giri shipwreck, Guraidoo Kandoo or Kandhooma Thila are the best dive sites south of Male. In the third day we reached Ari, a perfect place to enjoy the spectacular company of manta rays in one of the many cleaning stations, always shepherded by our experienced guides Marilen and Marc. They hover above our heads without any fear, playing with our bubbles. It is really a magical moment which I recommend to any diver. I think that no one can be indifferent to these animals, even those who already dive with them on a daily basis. After this dazzling dive we stayed there snorkeling with the mantas. It was truly a moment which made the entire trip worthwhile.

So the days went by, diving in places like Donkalo Baru Thila, with its amazingly beautiful soft corals. At Hafza Thila we enjoyed the company of an enormous school of herrings and tuna. We also were in Malvivaru Veru with several lionfish and pipefish.

The whale shark After just one hour searching the giant appears, imperturbable with our presence. I was the first in the water, well ahead of everyone else, and started to shoot the beautiful animal, with freedive fins I had brought just for this moment, when Iﾂｴd have to snorkel with these animals, having to position myself and swim a lot to take the best pictures a few centimeters away. For an instant I thought I had lost the animal from sight, but after a moment he came back from nowhere and slowly swam directly towards me. I had to get out of the way at the last moment to avoid a collision; my fish eye lens wasnﾂｴt able to frame him entirely at that short distance.

These were magic moments and I knew I would go home with a rather complete photo file from the Maldives and with the incredible moments from the whole trip, with mantas and the whale shark. I will keep it as one of the most special moments in my life.

SOME TIPS A 3mm suit is ideal to dive comfortably in the Maldives, given that water temperature is normally above 29ﾂｰC, while average diving depth is usually some 20 meters, therefore being a great place for every level of certification. Itﾂｴs true that sometimes currents tend to be a bit stronger, but you just need to relax and avoid swimming against the current. Deco markers are mandatory, as we did our safety stops as drifts, and this ensures that our support boat can find us and take us aboard safely.

As photography equipment tip I think it is essential for the trip to carry a wide-angle lens such as Tokina 10-17mm and also a macro lens of 60mm. But I confess that from the 19 dives, 18 were with the 10-17mm. This is the strength of the Maldives: landscapes and big life, with fish from varied sizes and species, big encounters with the whale shark, manta rays, napoleon wrasse, turtles or different schools of fish.

A last tip and perhaps the most important: choose the best dive guides. I had the luck of diving with Marilen and Marc, who with their 16 consecutive seasons guiding Abando clients to the Maldives transformed our trip into one of the best experiences of my life.

The rumors of a Full Frame between the 1D and the 5D coming were circulating already for some time, and were confirmed with the brands´ announcement. 6D will be a good choice for anyone seeking more quality but without the means to invest in a 5D Mark III (which today costs US$ 3,500). Its new sister will appear with a suggested price tag of US$ 2,100. Besides counting on the Full Frame sensor, 6D has a smaller body than the 5D Mark III, and also has the resources for Wi-Fi picture transmission and built-in GPS. It will be able to take 4.5 frames per second with a shutter speed range from 302 to 1/8000, record in full HD and store in an SD card, its sensor being the Digic +5, capable of generating 20.2 Megapixel photos. With an ISO ranging between 100-25,600 and silent shutter mode, we only hope that now underwater camera case manufacturers will come up with options for this new toy.

To capture the scene, Canadian Paul Nicklen had to wait for the penguins to pass by, immersed in freezing water, using a snorkel to breathe. He told he took more than 50,000 photos in three weeks to obtain the winning image.

Spread over the magazine, in a simple and objective language, we will tell you why we liked, why we would always use it or any information an experienced diver would like to tell a friend who wishes or needs to have such an item.

LIFELINE RADIO TRANSMITTER AND GPS OUR OPINION: Safety is unquestionable. The late Commander Rolim Amaro from TAM Airlines, in one of his mottos, said that “only one thing is above the client: safety”. We believe in it and whenever we test a product which is directly related to safety, rescue or dive accident prevention, we do it with great care. NAUTILUS LIFELINE is firstly a VHF radio, with the same transmission features of the radio you see in the cockpit of dive boats, the one which the skipper uses to talk to the dive base, other boats, and in an emergency to the Navy, the marina firefighters and/or Medical Emergency Services. Well, it all works when a diver needs help which can be requested from the boat to any of those channels. But what if the diver is lost, already at the surface – how does HE get in touch? This is the solution LIFELINE is bringing, as it is a radio which DIVES TOGETHER WITH THE DIVER. If he/she goes underwater and on the way back cannot find the boat, it allows for communication with it and with all those channels mentioned. For that LIFELINE is also a GPS integrated to the radio. It has a digital display which informs your geographical coordinates. With this information and the radio channel the lost diver can inform his position in any of three ways: 1. Talking to his own boat 2. Talking to other boats through channel 16 – or it can be pre-registered with other channel that´s more often used in the region 3. Send a general Distress Call to all integrated GPS radios (for this to work in Brazil one must register with ANATEL) Therefore, an equipment like this is fundamental for sites which are far from shore, or those which besides being distant also have strong currents, which can quickly separate the diver from his boat at the end of the dive. Examples of this are the Galapagos, Cocos Island, Revillagigedo, Fiji and many others. It worked very well during our test. I went down with it during dives in Puerto Madryn, hanging from my BC (I used a small cord attaching it to a d´ring with a small stainless carabiner). The radio is manufactured by Nautilus to withstand well the pressure down to 70 meters (8 atmospheres), and can be opened and operated at the surface, thoroughly wet, without any problem; I did it, besides, using a 5mm thick glove. I called the boat through channel 16, changed to 10 to continue talking only to our boat, and all fine, sound transmission and reception being very clear. As a result, I already kept one for me. After all, guiding groups in different parts of the planet, one more SAFETY equipment is never too much. Instructors, this equipment is primarily for us! PRINCETON TEC MINIWAVE LED FLASHLIGHT OUR OPINION: Miniwave LED is the compact version of the popular Shockwave LED. With 390 Lumens of power it was designed for the diver who wants a modern, hydrodynamic light. Miniwave LED is perfect to illuminate wide distances during the dive. Its grip is comfortable, with a side trigger which alternates the power control of the light between weak and strong, besides having a stopper so it won´t turn on inside your bag or during transport. Reaching the highest level, the book, in a 34x28 format, has 240 images – all captioned – which showcase the variety of living beings from the seas of ten countries. It is divided into six chapters (Reef: home; Reef Inhabitants; Looking Closer; Lunch Time; Life in Community and The Interface) which allow the reader to access the beauty of the ocean world and to get to know places which would be otherwise unimaginable. Each chapter is opened by a text from a renowned professor, Ph.D., researcher, either national or international, about the theme in question. Besides, the whole book was published in two languages – Portuguese and English. “I´ve had the opportunity to get to know unusual places, to be side by side with renowned scientists who were able to show me the seas and the peculiarities of the underwater world in great detail. I am much honored to have been granted access to all this knowledge, which is undoubtedly a great differential in my professional trajectory. My main objective in producing this book is to share with society at large the beauty and rarities found in marine nature, and somehow showcase the importance of preserving the environment”, says Krajewski. The marine ecosystem is very rich, and full of details. Every place in the world has its particulars and due to that the author believes that to develop image gathering as done for this book is something that requires a strong knowledge of the life of the living being to be photographed. “There are unusual images, like a picture of a sea snake, a seahorse the size of a fingernail, and a little fish on a diet which lives inside a single coral, and a fish which feeds out of the water. I tried to catch details of marine animals which are rarely shown. I wouldn´t have achieved it if there wasn´t a research effort, a knowledge acquired in the course of more than ten years of study and cooperation with relevant specialist colleagues”, adds the author. Under the Brazilian sea there are unique species. With images from the northeast, south and southeast of the country, the author shows in a chapter the rarity of species occurring only in Brazil, besides the beautiful seascapes.

TECHNIQUES To gather images the author used several kinds of cameras along these years. From a Nikonos V and Canon photo film cameras, using underwater cases, to innumerable models of digital cameras, also using u/w cases. According to him, light is a key issue for underwater photography so one can accurately portray color under the sea. Due to it he utilized a great number of lenses, flashes and color filters to achieve the desired result. Photos were taken with several angles, details and formats. Besides, Krajewski used great effort and much creativity to achieve the desired result. Some images showing underwater panoramas were elaborated with the fusion of more than 30 images, which took several hours underwater to be obtained – a technique rarely used in immersions, and which portrays the seascape with an uniquely different perspective. During his dives the author spent hours searching for what he wanted and faced seas with temperatures down to 8°C. “I very much enjoy what I do, and this book is a portrait of what the undersea world means to me. SHARKS IN DANGER IN AUSTRALIA WA is poised to further feed Asia’s appetite for shark fin in a controversial move being pushed by WA Fisheries Minister, Norman Moore. A delegation to China led by Fisheries Department director-general Stuart Smith found that there would be strong demand for WA shark fin with a ‘‘green stamp’’ that guaranteed it has come from sustainable sources. The minister and his department have now commissioned the independent Marine Steward-ship Council to analyze the state’s catch limits and fishing practices so WA can be certified as a sustainable fishery. – Extract from the Sunday Times Article October 7, 2012 which can be seen below. There have been ongoing campaigns to save the sharks for many years now, from various organizations with ambassadors like Sir Richard Branson, Yao Ming and Jackie Chan to individual contributors. However, there is still a long way to go before humanity realizes the important role sharks play in the health of our oceans and the cruel barbarity of the shark fin trade. Claims that the market for shark fin is crashing due to campaigning by green groups are completely false. What is simply happening is that the shark populations worldwide are crashing due to over-fishing and the ongoing demand for shark fins. An IUCN study showed, one third of all shark species are threatened with extinction – most will not survive past 2020. In the last 20 years, shark populations around the world have been in steep decline, some by as much as 90%. As a last resort, shark finners are increasingly targeting marine reserves, as these are the only places left, the last stronghold for sharks. These marine reserves, rare and unique places, must be protected to ensure the biodiversity bank of our oceans. For Department of Fisheries Director, Stuart Smith to say that Western Australia can provide a sustainable shark fin product to the Asian market completely undermines the important work that has been done by Branson, Ming, Chan and all the non-government organizations campaigning to save the sharks. Not to mention the tireless work conducted by Sea Shepherd worldwide, most notably in the Galapagos where Sea Shepherd is working alongside authorities in their efforts to stamp out the illegal poaching of sharks in the Galapagos Marine Reserve. In addition to WA and Galapagos, there are various states and provinces around the world that have moved to ban shark finning or import/export of shark products. Statements like the one made by Stuart Smith show a complete lack of respect not only for sharks and the natural world, but also for future generations and highlights that Mr. Smith is completely uneducated about the important role sharks play in the health of our oceans and the dire situation they face globally.
“There is no such thing as sustainable shark fisheries, sharks are threatened with extinction worldwide. The decision by the WA government was made by politicians who have lost touch with reality. It’s greed over logic, profit over nature, money over our future. Here in the Galapagos people are in touch with nature and they understand that the value of a live shark far outweighs the value of a dead one. It is time the WA politicians wake up and join the program”, says Alex Cornelissen, Sea Shepherd Galapagos Director.

ENVIRONMENT | SEA SHEPHERD | By the Newsroom To offer one of the last remaining strongholds for the sharks to the markets of Asia would be like finding an undiscovered group of endangered African Black Rhinos and offering them to poachers. There is no such thing as sustainable shark fin and to open this area up for shark fishing will only allow an even further level of corruption in the illegal trade in shark fin, a trade that is only third to the illegal trade in drugs and arms. Is this an industry that Australians want to be linked to? The world is very concerned about the state of the world’s shark populations and will be watching the Western Australian government very closely on this. From a pure economic sense, not only would there be a direct loss in the dive industry, since many divers come to WA to see sharks, but due to the utter outrage of the world community, one may even seen a boycott of tourism in WA if this offer of WA shark fins were seriously ‘put on the table’ to the Asian market. Australian Director, Jeff Hansen stated, “Imagine where our humpback whale population would be today, if right on the eve of the global moratorium on commercial whaling, some nation offered up a sustainable form of humpback whale meat to the market. Sharks have kept our oceans healthy for over 450 million years, oceans that give us up to 80 percent of our oxygen, we rely on sharks every day for our very survival. We need them, they don’t need us, and it’s long overdue that we give them the respect they deserve. We can live just fine without a tasteless, nutrition-less bowl of soup, but we cannot live in this world without sharks.” Stuart Smith, Norman Moore and the Western Australian Government have an opportunity to stand up for the sharks, to stand up for the health of our oceans, for the benefit of current and future generations.

Besides the research work, Krajewski visited more than 20 countries gathering nature images. His pictures illustrate several books and articles published in many countries. Currently Krajewski is a contributor to Terra da Gente magazine where he publishes articles and photos and is also authoring a special feature series on marine life. As a cinematographer he has produced images for several TV shows from Globo TV Network. Currently he is one of the producers and hosts of the “Domingão Aventura” feature exhibited in the “Domingão do Faustão” show.

Which are the most interesting places you´ve visited, and which one stood out for you as relates to photo opportunities? That´s a difficult question… I´m the kind of person who does not have a single favorite animal. I like from whales and sharks to small fish and all sorts of invertebrates. I think that each dive site has its charm and offers unique opportunities. But if I could mention a few, I´m passionate for the bountiful seas of Indonesia, in some places like Raja Ampat, Bali and Lembeh, where you almost can´t see repeated fish.

Jardines de la Reina, in Cuba, for big Caribbean fish such as groupers and sharks; Cenderawasih Bay in Indonesia for whale sharks; Raja Ampat for blue water mangroves; and Tasmania and Kangaroo Island in South Australia for the underwater landscape and coldwater fish diversity, including the pretty seadragons. I also very much like the Great Barrier Reef for its reef structure, and Wakaya in Fiji for the color explosion in fish and corals. I think I went over the top! But really I´m the kind of person who finds enchantment everywhere underwater. Every place I´ve been granted me unique and unforgettable experiences.

Essentials Diver This intermediate level of continued education is designed to allow certified divers to improve on their diving performance, review and practice the essentials learned in any IANTD dive program. Techniques and knowledge acquired in this program prepare the diver for more advanced dives. Essentials Divers is recommended for those divers willing to improve their performance and competence during their dives. This program does not qualify the diver to go deeper than his previous certification.
Who can teach this program? An Advanced EANx Instructor or with a higher degree and certified as IANTD Essentials Diver. A rebreather instructor is required for a diver to be certified as rebreather diver at this level.
Prerequisites: Open Water (Nitrox) Diver certification or equivalent Minimum age of 15 years with authorization from parents or legal guardian, or a minimum of 12 years to qualify as Junior Diver, or 18 years without previous consent.
Program limits: • No dive to be conducted in depths further than the student´s qualification • All dives to emphasize teamwork and interaction with one´s buddy

Since its inception in 1960, NAUI members have acquired a worldwide reputation, thanks to the leadership in SCUBA diving and quality dive training. The organization continues to attract the best minds in diving due to a continuous emphasis on safety. Every candidate to NAUI leadership should be carefully acquainted with the information contained in this manual, especially the sections where NAUI VALUES and its CREED are described, allowing therefore for a full understanding of what NAUI means to its members. NAUI grows with diversity and the enthusiasm which every new member brings at every level. The discoveries, innovations, ideas and especially the camaraderie with other members are fundamental for the strengthening and superiority of NAUI in the diving community. The choice of becoming a NAUI leader requires much more than simply seeking a certification or personal status. It requires a unique commitment, very much apart from other agencies, because NAUI is truly made of its own members, and through the shaping of its new leaders NAUI maintains its motto: “DIVE SAFETY THROUGH EDUCATION”

■ DOENÇA DESCOMPRESSIVA (DD)
São comuns: dores nas articulações, dormência, formigamento, fraqueza muscular, descoordenação motora, coceira e manchas na pele (cutis marmorata), com ou sem dor. Não tão comuns, mas possivelmente como indicador de maior gravidade: dor intensa nas costas ou abdômen, paralisia dos membros, incontinência ou retenção urinária, distúrbios visuais, confusão mental, tontura, mal estar, falta de ar, dor torácica, tosse ou outros sinais neurológicos incomuns. A desidratação é comum em DD. O quadro pode aparecer em minutos ou até horas após o mergulho e seu desenvolvimento é geralmente progressivo e gradual.
■ EMBOLIA ARTERIAL GASOSA (EAG)
Perturbações sensoriais, paralisia ou paresia das extremidades, distúrbios visuais, dores de cabeça, convulsões ou outros alterações neurológicas localizadas. O quadro pode ser associado à lesão Pulmonar (pneumotórax, enfisema subcutâneo ou mediastinal). O EAG pode ser o resultado do mergulho a profundidades tão insignificante como um metro de profundidade. Sinais e sintomas geralmente se desenvolvem em poucos minutos após o termino do mergulho, e sua apresentação é geralmente aguda.
■ BAROTRAUMA (BTP)
Dispnéia, dor torácica, pneumotórax, enfisema subcutâneo, pneumomediastino, mudanças no tom de voz, tosse, escarro sanguinolento, pode haver comprometimento neurológico resultado de uma Embolia Arterial Gasosa (EAG). NOTA: A recompressão é contra-indicada em pneumotórax não tratado, já que poderia atuar como um pneumotórax hipertensivo durante a fase de descompressão.
Além de assegurar os primeiros-socorros habituais, o tratamento de emergência para lesões causadas por atividades relacionadas com o mergulho de ar comprimido inclui: 1. A administração de Oxigênio em altas concentrações (de preferência em uma fração inspirada de - FiO2 de 100%). 2. Avaliar a necessidade de hidratação. Se necessário, administrar soluções cristalóides isotônicas (não são recomendadas soluções glicosadas). 3. Executar e documentar um exame neurológico completo. 4. Em caso de emergência, ligue para a DAN e peça atendimento em português 0800-684-9111. Este serviço é gratuito e prestado em caráter humanitário para obter orientação imediata sobre o diagnostico, cuidados imediatos, transporte ou remoção para um serviço de medicina hiperbárica apropriado.
