Seahaven Storehouse

SEAFORD – A TOWN OF GENEROUS AND CARING PEOPLE Seahaven Storehouse would like to offer a huge “thank you” to all the individuals, schools, churches, organisations and businesses who have contributed both food and money over the Christmas period, enabling many needy families and single people to have some nourishing food (and a few treats, too!) over the holiday season. Special thanks go to Morrisons, who most kindly allowed volunteers from the Storehouse, on a very busy Saturday at the end of November, to spend the day in the store, engaging with customers on their way in and inviting them to add two extra cans to their shopping. The result was a whopping donation for that day alone of over 600 kilos of provisions … just what was needed to make up the food parcels for Christmas! The generosity of the shoppers on the day was quite outstanding, testifying to the fact that the community here in Seaford is still able to care and give, even in the face of the growing financial pressures of the day. Over the past eleven months, Seahaven Storehouse has provided an ever-growing number of food parcels to those in difficult circumstances, culminating in 50 boxes of groceries being sent out before Christmas, together with more than 30 additional Christmas hampers – and fifty advent calendars for the children which have been distributed through children’s centres, the Swift team at Social Services, and via the CAP (Christians Against

Poverty) course, as well as direct to those who have been referred and arrive on a Thursday morning at Kingswell, home of Seaford Community Church and the Storehouse’s base. Seahaven Storehouse’s work has indeed caught the imagination of many individuals and organisations in the area, and many have wanted to contribute in the best way they can. For example, a few folk got together at Southdown Housing and held a table-top sale, resulting in a donation to the Storehouse of £100-worth of shopping. The ladies from Inner Wheel held a collection and bought a quantity of Christmas goods. Churches in the area are regularly donating food and finance. And individuals have been very generous in their gifts of money. Donations are always welcome, and incoming and outgoing food is constantly monitored and recorded, ensuring that the food is handled properly and distributed to those in real need. Should you wish to donate further, you may do this by either depositing the food in the Seahaven Storehouse bin just through the checkouts at Morrisons, or by bringing food to Kingswell, 115 Vale Road, Seaford, on a Thursday between 10am and 1pm, or by contacting Dawn to find out what is the most pressing need of the moment. Volunteers Needed at Seven Sisters Sussex Wildlife Trust is looking for volunteers to lend a helping hand with children visiting its education centre at Seven Sisters Country Park near Seaford throughout 2014. If you like working with children and are keen to share your enjoyment of the countryside with others then why not consider joining the team? Regular commitment is appreciated, but this could be as little as one day each month or as often as five days a week during busy periods, with most of the visits scheduled for the summer months. You don’t have to be an expert but some knowledge or an interest in wildlife is useful. However, you do need to enjoy being outside, as most of your time will be spent out-of-doors.

Up to 100 pupils from the same school can visit Seven Sisters Country Park on a school trip. During the day, the children, aged between 5 and 11 years old, take part in different activities all based around the national curriculum but with strong wildlife themes. Activities include woodland studies, pond dipping, river studies and rock pooling down on the beach beneath the spectacular chalk cliffs of the Seven Sisters. As well as providing school trips for primary schools, Seven Sisters is a popular venue for secondary school groups including GCSE students. Throughout the year the education team also runs holiday clubs and family events, which often require volunteer support. An introductory morning is being held at the Pump Barn, Seven Sisters Country Park on Tuesday 11th February, 10am –12.30pm. Education volunteering is subject to two satisfactory references and a DBS (Disclosure and Barring Service). Seaford Natural History Society It’s February and we are beginning to think about getting out and about in the countryside, but before we do we have three more indoor meetings to look forward to. On 11th February and 11th March the focus is the Seaford Head Local Nature Reserve. In 2012, the Seaford Head Reserve Management Committee commissioned Sussex Wildlife Trust (SWT) to do a survey of the flora and fauna on the Reserve and using the survey as a base, to develop a plan to manage the Reserve. On the 11th February, Graeme Lyons, the SWT ecologist, will be talking about the survey he did and on 11th March, Andy Phillips, the management plan author, will be talking about how the plan was developed. Don’t miss these fascinating topics if you want to know how nature reserves are managed and developed, and in particular about our unique local landmark, Seaford Head.

Out and about in February – Identifying trees

Winter may seem a quiet time for natural history enthusiasts but whilst there is little on the ground to catch the eye, the trees are always striking, standing bare and stark (storms permitting) without their leaves. Friston Forest and Abbots Wood are good places to visit in the winter and to start learning how to identify trees – or brush up your knowledge if, like me, you learnt some natural history as a child (the Brownies!) but have forgotten most of it. Friston Forest is a recent addition to the landscape, created in the 1920s as a water catchment area for Eastbourne Waterworks. Abbots Wood near Hailsham is much older and has a broader range of trees. Whilst Friston is principally beech (with a lone London Plane planted by one of our members, Peter Davys, in 1963 when he was ranger at Friston), Abbots Wood has oak, beech and birch, with stands of chestnut and lime, as well as crab apple, hornbeam, red oak, spindle and wild service trees. So what to do if you want to be able to identify the different trees? There are lots of books on this subject and the Natural History Museum has an excellent website at http://www.nhm.ac.uk/ What follows is a brief summary of what to look for based on the Natural History Museum site.

• Is the tree deciduous or evergreen? At this time of the In between, we have the important business of our Annual General Meeting on 25th February and we look forward to seeing members there. Our meetings are held at St Luke’s Church, Walmer Road – see the listings at the end of Seaford Scene for details. We welcome visitors and new members. Visitors pay £3 per meeting, which is refunded if you decide to join. In the spring, summer and autumn, we arrange outdoor meetings, usually gentle strolls of around two to two and a half hours. All are welcome but as ever we are keen to recruit people who are happy to lead walks, so do get in touch if you think you have something to offer. Our first walk in Friston Forest is on 1st April. probably the best (or at least the easiest) way of identifying trees. Lets apply this to the beech – the main tree in Friston Forest. • The beech loses its leaves so it is deciduous. • It’s a tall tree – up to 40 metres high with a domed crown. • The bark is smooth and pale grey. • It has pale brown, cigar shaped buds up to 2 cm long. • Both male and female trees have yellowish flowers. The female flowers are in pairs with a spiny husk and the male flowers have long stalked drooping tassel like heads. • The leaves are oval to elliptical with wavy edges. Walking in the woods at this time of the year, it’s possible to identify some trees from their silhouette, bark and buds, and you can confirm your identification in the spring by looking at the flowers but more importantly the leaves. to our Winter 2014 Newsletter, which we hope you will find useful and informative.

FROM THE CHAIRMAN:

Although published in February, this Newsletter was written at the end of December, and I would like to take this opportunity to wish you all a prosperous and crime free 2014. My grateful thanks go out to our hard working committee, our co-ordinators and deliverers. Thanks to your efforts, we had over 1100 members on our books for 2013. That is more than 7 times the number of 5 years ago. Keep up the good work. We are also forging an alliance with the Seaford Speedwatch Association and hope to join up with the Seaford Seniors Forum in the near future. Our relationship with our local policing team is growing stronger and we will continue to support them in every way that we can. We are doing our very best to improve communications with other groups in Seaford. Best Regards, Mark Brown, Chairman.

BE PREPARED:

No doubt the cold weather is upon us which means we need to keep a caring eye on people who can’t get about due to adverse weather conditions. Make sure your car is well maintained throughout the winter with the battery in good condition, remember the demands on it are greater in cold weather. Ensure tyre tread and pressures are correct and have a can of spray de-icer available for the frosty mornings. If you haven’t done so already make sure your garden furniture is stored safely away, including those precious garden ornaments as there have been a number of thefts of such items in recent weeks.

GOOD DEEDS:

Izzy Coutts, a pupil at Chyngton School, borrowed her neighbour’s box of remembrance poppies, sprayed them with glitter and took them to school to sell for Remembrance Day. Well done Izzy! Isn’t it good to see the young remembering our debt to those who gave up their lives for us?

If you would like to mention someone who has done a good deed, please let us know, but first please make sure that they don’t mind you mentioning them as heroes often wish to remain unsung!

LOCAL CRIME / POLICE UPDATE:

We receive regular updates and information from Sgt Stuart Mullins of Sussex Police and where pertinent these are forwarded to members who have provided an email address. The most recent scam that has occurred in this area is where a bogus official phones or calls at your home saying they are investigating fraudulent use of your card and asks you for personal information and PIN and for them to take your card back to the bank for cancellation. They then have enough information to empty your account. Please do not divulge any information or hand your card to anybody – banks do not operate in this way, so remain on your guard at all times. Although Seaford is a low crime and anti social behaviour area, we can all play a part in keeping it that way by taking a few simple and sensible precautions. • When leaving your property unattended always make sure doors and windows are secure. • If you are going away for a few days ask a trusted neighbour to keep an eye on your home. • Don’t let anyone purporting to be an official into your home without first seeing their identification, even then you may wish to check with the organisation they work for before allowing them access. • Never give details of your bank account, PIN numbers or passwords to anyone over the telephone – genuine banks would not ask for such details by that means of communication. • When leaving your vehicle parked and unattended, make sure that it is secure. NEVER leave items capable of being stolen on display, as that makes your vehicle a target. Place such items out of sight or in the boot.

As Mark mentioned earlier, Neighbourhood Watch membership locally is on an encouraging upward trend, with over 1100 members registered for 2013., and we are delighted to report that we have received over 660 Membership Forms already for 2014, and look forward to receiving more after this Newsletter has been released, as the 2014 Subs are now due. A Membership Form is printed after this Newsletter for your use. Remember, the more Members we have, the louder your voice will be heard in our relationship with the Council and the local Police. Regretfully, records show we have over 1000 exMembers who did not renew in 2013 or earlier years, and we would love to know why. Do you think we are irrelevant? Are we not addressing the issues that are most important to you? Are we not communicating effectively? Did you just not get round to it? We would welcome your views on how you think we should be targeting our efforts to support our aim to “Promote Good Citizenship, Neighbourliness and Crime Reduction”. Please feel free to tell us what you want from your local Neighbourhood Watch Scheme. We held a very successful but informal Deliverers Meeting on 30th October, where we gave our Co-ordinators and deliverers an account of our activities over the last year and outlined our plans for expansion in 2014. Backpack Project with Annecy School and the Rotary Club of Seaford

Annecy Catholic Primary School has been very enthusiastic in taking on the challenge of filling the School Backpacks for Mary’s Meals. Rotarian Alan Wagstaff and President Michael Logan initially made a video presentation about the Backpack Project at an assembly to students and staff. A request was then made from the school to repeat the presentation to parents. Following the assembly presentation the Annecy children were invited to ask questions on the project which ranged from “Where are the bags going, how will they get there, and can the receiving children have sweets and toys?” Head Teacher Fiona McGonigle then asked the children “How many bags can we fill?” The children suggested numbers ranging from 25 to 200! They were enthralled with the idea of children giving charity to other, less fortunate children, and the response from parents was magnificent – the target of fifty backpacks was easily smashed with over 130 bags donated. President Michael said “I was very excited and moved when I visited the School to receive over 130 Back Packs. A cracking result, and a huge thank you to all those who took part at Annecy School in this project. I am now waiting for the truck to come and collect all the bags so that I can have my garage back!” “Mary’s Meals” is a UK based charity which was started in 2002 with a view to providing one daily meal in a place of education in developing countries. The objective is to attract chronically poor children into a classroom, where they can gain an education which can be their ladder out of poverty. From a start of feeding 200 children in Malawi, the charity now provides meals for 750,000 children every day in 16 different countries. The cost is just £10.70 per child for a year.

Following the success of the meals project, the charity identified another obstacle which prevented poor families sending their children to school. The parents are so poor that they cannot afford to buy basic things needed for school. The charity therefore started a scheme called the Backpack Project where schools, churches, colleges and other groups fill an old school bag or backpack with some everyday things which children need for school. Suitable items (which do not need to be new) include backpack/schoolbag, exercise book/notepad, pencils/pens/crayons, eraser, ruler, pencil sharpener, pencil case, small towel, shorts, skirt, T-shirt, sandals, flip flops, small ball, spoon, toothbrush and toothpaste.

Help for Seaford Primary School

The Rotary Club of Seaford received a request for help from Seaford Primary School to enable 110 children from the School to sing as part of a choir of 8000 voices at the O2 arena on Monday 27 January 2014. This concert, arranged by Young Voices, is one of a series also taking place in Sheffield, Birmingham & Manchester to raise funds for CLIC Sargent, FareShare and the Young Voices Foundation. To get the Seaford Primary School students to the venue costs £1270. As a result, President Michael Logan went along to a concert for Heartsease at the School on Friday 6 December (thoroughly enjoying the experience) to present a cheque for £300. This donation, with help from Heartsease too, meant that they are much nearer their target. In amongst the children are (left to right) Head of Music Kate Steer, Mike Logan and Deputy Headteacher Lynne Giles. Seaford Primary School has an after-school choir of 115, a Chamber choir of 32 (audition only) & an orchestra of 39. Children have the opportunity to learn an instrument from year 1 (violin/cello) and in Y3 all children learn recorder & in Y all learn guitar. The School goes out into the community to entertain residents in care & nursing homes and has 12 bookings this December. Heartsease exists for those who are alone, usually through bereavement. Although based at SBC, anyone in the Seaford area may join. They have contact with over seventy people, and between forty and fifty attend each meeting.

On the Monday before Christmas, the Rotary Club of Seaford’s President Michael Logan accompanied by Vice President Ray Hazan paid a visit to Seaford Fire Station. It was quite exciting because as they arrived one of the appliances came out of the station with blue lights flashing!

Michael and Ray were met by Watch Manager Dave Reed with three of his fire fighter team. Unusually, the purpose of the visit was for the Rotary Club to receive rather than give. The Fire Brigade had decided to donate £250 from their fundraising efforts at the Open Day last June to go towards the Santa Sleigh collections to benefit local children. On behalf of the Club and the future beneficiaries, President Michael was delighted to accept the gift with thanks.

Rotary Club of Seaford Supports Tea Leaf Trust with £1000

The Tea Leaf Trust was formed in 2008 by Tim Pare and Yasmene Shah following their honeymoon in Sri Lanka. They observed the hidden story of poverty, hardship and hopelessness, personal, civil and humanitarian rights abuse, health issues and a lack of quality education which, by itself, trapped the present and future generations in the current situation with no means of escape. Tim and Yasmene left the UK to live in Sri Lanka with the aim of changing the prospects of those communities they had visited. Four months later they were approached by World Vision Lanka which had established the need for educational projects in the impoverished areas, in particular in the Maskeliya region. Working together they formed the Tea Leaf Centre for Professional Development in 2010. This has resulted in the establishment of a number of educational programmes to benefit all sections of the community. The Rotary Club of Seaford is giving a grant of £500 to the Tea Leaf Trust which has been doubled to £1000 by a matching grant from our local Rotary District organisation. At the end of the 2013 Seaford in Bloom Awards Ceremony, held at Dean’s Place Alfriston on Tuesday 13th August, Seaford Town Clerk Sam Shippen had delivered the sad news that, due to her failing health, Isabel Stephenson had decided to discontinue as Chairman of Seaford in Bloom. Sam paid tribute to Isabel and her committee starting with a brief history, going back to 1992, when Seaford in Bloom began at a meeting in Seaford Baptist Church Hall. Sam then added, “This is a time of celebration for all the tremendous work that Seaford in Bloom has carried out for Seaford over the years. On behalf of all the town’s residents, businesses and Seaford Town Council a big ‘thank you’ to Isabel and the Seaford in Bloom Committee for all of the voluntary work you have tirelessly carried out for more than 20 years”. Former Seaford Town Clerk Len Fisher also thanked Isabel and her committee for “helping to make Seaford such a lovely place to live.”

Lloyds Bank community fund have gained us 4th place and £300. Our Tombola Open Day raised £282 and our valuation day due to bad weather £35.80. Sainsburys collections raised £422 in April and over £300 in December (just one day). A donation is going to the Hand Bell Ringers for their ongoing support. We are also receiving £20 per month from local podiatrist, Sonia Marshall, thanks for her generosity. Janet White cooked the annual Tuesday Lunch Club Christmas Dinner on December 17th and members enjoyed a complimentary (with help from £200 donated by Sainsburys Newhaven) meal with wine and sherry – a good time was had by all. I once again thank Pat Case, Janet White and their teams of volunteers for all the work they have put in this year, also Jean and her team at the Drop In. Thanks to the Bus Drivers and Escorts and all the Reception volunteers for their regular commitment to the cause, as well as Colin Hammond for organising the bus rota and all of the 60 odd volunteers, who must not go unmentioned. We still have a huge problem with our outside lift room. It is falling down and we need to repair it as soon as possible or access to the first floor will be limited to fully mobile visitors. We are also now desperate to rebuild and refurbish the disintegrating “Mortuary” or Meeting Room if you prefer. We were unable to carry out these two jobs along with the other urgent maintenance, because of the cost of the court case against the tenant who occupied the Gym Building without a proper legal agreement for over two years. We have regained control of the Gym building in court and as you know the Judge found against the tenant ordering him to pay our costs. The building along with the open space adjoining it (with planning permission), is now in the hands of an agent who has it on the market. We are hoping for a quick sale to enable us to sort out our maintenance problems and extend our services to the community. It was noted that the Bus was under used and we have let it, with a driver several times over the year to local nursing homes for residents’ trips. Alan Smith has taken over the Driver/Escort rota from Colin. We now have new doors and windows on the ground floor of the Club House and hope to replace the windows upstairs early next year. I am sorry to have to

report that we still cannot afford to upgrade our heating but Janet has negotiated very good terms for another year with our electricity supplier. Viv is looking some new funding possibilities. Frankie and Yvonne are now jointly overseeing the Charity Shop and it is continuing to do well. It must be noted that the shop, unlike many, is a true charity shop with very reasonable prices and no paid staff or management. Thus income from all donations of sellable items is used to help keep the charity going. We also take sacks of rags for recycling. Jean Staff and her volunteers are keeping the not-forprofit Drop In going at the Old Town Hall and it is just about covering its costs. Tea, coffee and cake are available at very low prices, giving local people a place to call in, and have a sit down and a chat in the warm. I would like to thank Jill, Janet and all the other people who have covered for me while I have been away on sick leave, and our new maintenance gem, Gerry, who has transformed the rear patio area, cleaned up the car park and painted in the parking bays. Jeff and Sheila have joined our reception team and we are also grateful to them. We still need a new Chairman from next July. I need to concentrate on the overall running of the Trust with Janet and do not intend to carry on as Chairman after the July 2014 AGM for a fifth year. We have a new TrusteeDirector, James Austin, joining us in January 2014. I have known Jim through the Martello Rotary Club and he will be an asset to us. We are not out of the financial woods yet but Treasurer Janet with her superb housekeeping skills has kept our head above water for yet another year.

… A cheap way to bring new life to old kitchen or

wardrobe doors is to apply one or two coats of oil based eggshell paint. Prepare by rubbing down lightly with 180 grit sandpaper. Wipe the surface clean with white spirit and apply the paint with a small fine wool roller. You need to work quickly and avoid going back over painted areas as it starts to dry or you will pull the surface and create roller marks. If the colour is the same as before you may get away with only one coat. For a change of colour, lightly rub down and clean with white spirit between coats

Corelli Ensemble concert In February, Seaford will be fortunate to have an opportunity to hear the outstanding young British cellist, Ella Rundle, perform with the Corelli Ensemble. She will be playing CPE Bach’s beautiful A major concerto. Ella studied at the Menuhin School and has won international prizes and awards. Definitely a name to watch! The Corelli Ensemble, directed by Maeve Jenkinson, will also perform pieces by Mozart and Mendelssohn, including some well loved favourites such as Bach Air and Pachelbel Canon. The theme of the concert is “Music from Germany” and will be followed by an opportunity to meet the performers and enjoy some fine German wine. The concert will take place on Sunday 16th February at 4.15pm in St Thomas More Church, Sutton Road, Seaford. TWO INTERESTING POSTS AVAILABLE The Seaford Community Partnership is a voluntary body working with local clubs, businesses, councils and other groups who want to make Seaford a better place to live, work and enjoy life. The group is led by six Directors, unpaid, and from a variety of walks of life. The same is true of their Treasurer, and their Company Secretary, and both those positions fall vacant in 2014. Neither post is very arduous, but one would be best filled by someone with some accounting or Treasurer experience, and the other by an experienced Company Secretary or perhaps a former Clerk to Governors. One person could fill both rolls, or they could be just as easily done by two people. Technically the organisation is a Company Limited by Guarantee. The Directors meet quarterly and need to see current accounts, but the number of transactions is tiny. Similarly, the Company Secretary only needs to keep Companies House updated with changes in Director, and prepare an annual return at the time of the AGM. If you are the kind of person who likes working for your local community, and enjoys plenty of variety, then please offer your services. It has designed and part-funded the Seafront Exercise Path and the Town Heritage Trail. It has set up the Youth Forum and helped it raise the funding for the Green Gym on The Salts. It held the Seafront Exhibition and Consultation last year when 800 of you – of all ages – told us what changes you’d like to see on the Seafront. Also it designed and co-ordinated setting up the Seafront Garden by Pelham Road. Get switched on! Are you in the dark about low-energy light bulbs?

Traditional light bulbs have now been phased out across Europe, and we are gradually getting used to the lowenergy alternatives. But with a whole new set of names, numbers and jargon to get used to, it can be difficult to know if you’re buying the right thing. There are three main types of low-energy bulbs available – compact fluorescent light bulbs (CFLs), halogens and lightemitting diodes (LEDs). CFLs use only a fifth of the electricity that an old incandescent bulb would, because they don’t generate as much heat. This also means that they are kinder to your light fittings. Replacing one bulb in your house can save you £7 a year, so the savings can really add up! They also last a lot longer. One disadvantage of CFLs is that they can take a little while to reach their full brightness, unlike halogens and LEDs which come on straight away. Some CFLs don’t work well at low temperatures, so are not suitable for unheated rooms or garages. LED bulbs are even more efficient than CFLs and can save you nearly £7.50 per bulb per year. They usually cost more to buy, but can last up to 30 years! Halogen bulbs use a similar amount of energy as incandescent bulbs, and so are more expensive to run than CFLs and LEDs. They also have a much shorter lifespan.

LEDs and halogen bulbs can be disposed of with your normal waste, but you will need to take CFLs to a recycling point or tip as they contain a small amount of mercury. A wide range of bulb fittings is now available – particularly in CFLs – and you should be able to find one to fit all your existing lighting, including ceiling spotlights and chandelier fittings. Most can also be used with dimmer switches. Remember to check that the shape and size of the new bulb is suitable. To choose the correct wattage, you simply need to divide by five – so if a lamp used to take an old 60W bulb, you will now need a bulb of around 12W. You will also need to consider the lumen (lm) value to find out how bright the bulb is. The brightness of an old 60W bulb is roughly equivalent to 700–900lm and a 100W bulb equates to 1300lm. Finally, look at the colour temperature of the bulb to decide on the type of light you require. This is measured in Kelvin (K). A low value (2700K) means the light is warmer (often labelled as “warm white”), whereas a higher value (3500K+) will give you a colder white effect. By Alex Albrighton

Helen has lived in Seaford for 15 years and works as an HR Manager in Lewes. She has recently become the new president of Seaford Sweethearts WI. She is married to Gary and has two children – Alice, 6, and Max, who is 4. What do you like best about Seaford? I love the sense of community. People from Seaford are very passionate about where they live. Seaford is surrounded by beautiful countryside and of course the coast. It’s a fantastic place to live! What is your favourite film? I love all different types of films from rom-coms to action to period dramas. What is your favourite song or piece of music? I love all sorts of music but one of my favourites at the moment is Berlin by RY X. (You’ll know it when you hear it, it’s sampled in a recent television advert). What book are you reading at the moment? The Gargoyle by Andrew Davidson. How do you relax? Relax what’s that?! I do like to treat my myself to a beauty treatment every now and again. What is your idea of perfect happiness? I love being with my friends and family but when I have some alone time (which isn’t very often) I love baking! What is your favourite smell? Roses, fresh laundry, a cake baking – yum! What is the most important lesson life has taught you? I’m constantly learning life lessons! I thought when you became an adult you knew everything! Which person in history would you most like to meet? I love the Tudor period, so it has to be Henry VIII! What words or phrases do you most overuse? Probably “fabulous” and “amazing” but when speaking to my children I probably use the word “no” quite a few times! What is your greatest extravagance? I do like the finer things in life – food, holidays, but I’m quite partial to handbags… What would your motto be? “Life is what you make it” (to a certain extent). What makes you sad? Charles, a novelist, is researching his latest book and has invited the local medium, Madame Arcati, to hold a séance in their home. The Late Don Mabey MBE & Freeman of Seaford Don was born on the 18th January 1921 in Sebastopol Monmouthshire. He spent his childhood there and in 1935 the family moved to Oxted, Surrey. In 1940 he volunteered for the RAF and in 1941 he was accepted for training as a wireless operator/air gunner. Late in 1941 he went to Padgate for kitting out, then onto Blackpool for basic training and then training as a wireless operator. From there to No. 2 Radio school at Yatesbury and Wroughton, flying in Dominies and Percival Proctors. In July 1942 he passed his radio training at Yatsbury. During his waiting time for his gunnery course, he was posted to Grangemouth where he went to teach spitfire pilots the Morse code. In May 1943 he was posted to No. 8 Air gunners School at Evanton, Scotland. After completing the course he was posted to Coastal Command. He was then posted to Northern Ireland to No.2 Squadron O.T.U. on Wellingtons, at this stage he was “Crewed up” with the Crew he would stay with until 1946. After Christmas 1943 the “Crew” was posted to 281 Squadron at Thornaby-on-Tees, an Air Sea Rescue Squadron equipped with Warwicks. During his operational flying the “Crew” had several detachments from Leuchares in Scotland to Davidstow Moor in Cornwall. Other postings were in Reyjavik, Iceland, and Ballykelly and Aldergrove, Ireland. The last flight was with 281 Squadron on the 24May 1946 to Thornaby and on to Wembley to be demobbed. Don flew a total of 82 operations and left the RAF as a W.O.1(Warrant Officer First Class).

He Joined the RAFA (Royal Air Forces Association) in 1947 and was a founder member of the Oxted and Limpsfield Branch, where he was the Welfare officer from 1950 until 1980. In 1975 he became the Branch President a post he held until his death. He retired in 1986 from his work at the Prudential Assurance Co. Then he moved to Seaford and joined the Seahaven Branch RAFA. By 1988 he was elected as Vice President and in 1999 was elected as President. Also he was still President of Oxted and Limpsfield and he attended every possible meeting that he could. He was awarded several certificates of appreciation for his fundraising for the “WINGS APPEAL” including : The President’s Certificate from RAFA SE Area for efforts towards RAFA and The Central Council for continual large collections for the “WINGS APPEAL”. For 14 years he was a member of the British Red Cross. During his time he saved several lives and had to leave when an injury stopped him from lifting people. He enjoyed his Golf and was Hon. Secretary of Gresham Golf Club for 10 years. He joined Seaford Head Golf Club in the late 1950s, left, then rejoined in 1987 and was Hon. Secretary of the “Old Coggers” for the next 7 years. He was elected as President at Seaford Head Golf Club March 1998 again a post he held until his death. In 2010 he was a founder member of the newly formed Seahaven Branch of the Royal Society of St George and appointed as their President. In 2012 he was made a Freeman of Seaford along with Mr. Laurie Hollands. In 2013 he was awarded an MBE in the New Year’s Honours lists and presented with his award by the Queen, for the outstanding contribution that he made to the Royal Air Forces Association “WINGS APPEAL” and his dedication to serving to the local community. the Friends of Tide Mills

The Friends of Tide Mills completed its December meeting on Sunday15th. 16 of us recovered eight sacks of assorted rubbish, along with several bulkier items. We were pleased to welcome two new members to our steadily growing, still very jolly band. The amount of rubbish found was at least in part due to the recent gales and generally Tide Mills remains in very good shape largely down to people now taking more interest in the area and taking their litter home, which is brilliant. In addition to our de-littering efforts we also managed to widen a stretch of path next to the Creek which in time we hope to complete all the way down to the Newhaven end. It is to be hoped that as we continue to make good progress in de-littering the site we will be able to increasingly undertake similar work in the future. Our next meeting is on Sunday 16th February, we meet at the beach end of the Old Village Road that runs up from the Level Crossing, from 10am until 12 noon. Seaford Kurlers Seeing as how I am writing this at the end of December, 2013, this is my first time to say that I hope you all survived the gales and winds safely, and steered your way around the overload of food. We certainly deserve a really good Spring and Summer in 2014.

In case your navigations took you to the gorgeous Christmas foods, you may be in need of some rest and exercise. Nothing tooooo strenuous. Seaford Kurlers can offer you that and lots of fun with the new friends that will be waiting to greet you at our club. It is always good to welcome new members who will bring with them new ideas and maybe some new skills. If you come to see what we do you will be able to see the other facilities that are on offer at The Downs Leisure Centre. The staff there are excellent and will guide you through all that they have to offer. They have certainly made us very welcome. Before Christmas we had our annual Christmas lunch at The Moorings at Pevensey. The food was superbly cooked and presented. Such a large menu to choose from and so efficiently served to 38 of us. Anyone planning to visit for the first time will not be disappointed. If you have special dietary requirements you will be carefully catered for. Hopefully we will return. We were taken there by our careful ESDA Coach Services. This ensures that any of our disabled members will travel safely. At the last Kurling session of 2013 on the 17th December we had our traditional mince pies and everyone went on their way to their Christmas festivities. Since our first Kurling session in January this year, we have been collecting the annual £5 membership suscriptions. Downs Health Walking group

This year the Downs Health Walking group were finalists for the Volunteer of the Year Award at the Sussex Sports Awards, although unfortunately they didn’t win – http://www.activesussex.org/sportsawards.

On their nomination form it was quoted “Throughout the year the Wave Leisure Health Walk leaders lead a weekly walk in the Seaford, Peacehaven and Lewes area. Many of theseleaders have now volunteered for Wave Leisure for more than four years and have suffered their own fair share of challenges through injury, illness, bereavement and life generally. Without fail, whatever the weather, they will organise and lead the weekly walks as well as organising social trips (in January, the group went to Brighton to see the Ice Show) and fundraising for local charities throughout the year. They welcome new group members and ensure they are included in all activities as well as ensuring contact is maintained with regular group members if they are missing for whatever reason. For this group of volunteers the social element is as important as the walks.” They also do a regular Christmas Charity Mince Pie walk as well as a couple of other charity walks during the year. They usually hold a Halloween Walk as well. Over the last couple of years they have also supported St Wilfrid’s Hospice in Eastbourne, Remember Spencer in Newhaven, The Trevor Mann Baby Unit at Brighton and many more charities.

Women’s World Day of Prayer Coptic Christian women from Egypt have written the service for this year’s interdenominational Women’s World Day of Prayer, which will be held worldwide on Friday 7th March. There will be two services in Seaford, one at 2pm and the other at 7pm. Both will take place at St Andrew’s Bishopstone. Men and women are welcome to the services, which will be followed by light refreshments. This annual event was first held in 1926 in North America, Scotland followed in 1930 and England in 1932.

Recorder Playing Day Around 50 recorder players will be taking part in a Playing Day to be held in Seaford on Saturday 22nd March from 10am to 5pm.

The day is being organised by the Southdowns Branch of the Society of Recorder players and will be open to both members and non-members of the branch. It will be a wonderful opportunity to play a wide range of music under a visiting conductor. It will be held in St James’ Clubhouse, Blatchington Road, Seaford. The conductor will be Pam Smith, a graduate of Chetham’s School of Music and conductor of a number of recorder orchestras. The day will cost £12 for branch members and £14 for visitors. Coffee will be available from 10am and at lunch time people can either bring their own or order fish and chips to be brought in. The bust probably represents the General Charles Gordon (1833–1885) The row of buildings was erected shortly after his death in Khartoum. Gordon had relations in Seaford and as a youngster used to play in the grounds of Crouch House (now Crouch Gardens).

Seaford Musical Theatre Juniors Seaford Musical Theatre Juniors (SMTJ) are reeling from the news that they have reached the finals of the 2014 Epic Awards as they are one of over sixty thousand voluntary arts and crafts groups providing regular opportunities for local engagement across the UK and Republic of Ireland.

The Epic Awards were set up in 2010 by Voluntary Arts, an organisation that works to promote, support and champion the voluntary cultural sector, and the shortlisted groups are being spotlighted for the skill, innovation and hard work that goes into their activities. SMTJ offers performance-based learning at minimal, or no, cost. It supports community collaboration and awareness, offering volunteering awards for young members and encouraging youth inclusion in all aspects of the group. The overall winners will be announced at a reception in Glasgow in February, but members of the public can still vote for the People’s Choice Award and support SMTJ, who are based at the Barn Theatre in Seaford, by going to http://bit.ly/19g2axR

Running Commentary... Having just returned from visiting New Zealand I am reminded of the Maori saying that I mentioned in Running Commentary over three years ago – E kore e mau i moe he wae kai pakiaka. It means “a foot accustomed to running over roots makes the speediest runner.” Unfortunately, TV coverage of races (which has been so influential in attracting large numbers of people into the sport of running) focuses mainly on road events and even when an international cross-country race is shown it is generally one with repetitive laps over a “safe” grass surface with perhaps some gently undulating but neatly manicured sections. Real off-road running is infinitely more interesting and enjoyable so I would recommend all runners make a determined effort to get off-road as much as possible. Even if you have road races planned this year (of any distance) you could still make 90% of your training runs off-road. That Maori saying can work for all those Seaford Scene readers who are building up for the London or Brighton Marathons, for those who don’t race but run for fun, fitness and enjoyment, and for runners who prefer to stick with just short-distance events. In off-road running there are natural hazards such as rabbit holes, large flints or protruding tree roots that might cause you problems, whereas the injuries that can be sustained during road running are much more subtle and often “invisible”. Running on hard-impact road surfaces can lead to all manner of muscle injuries, ones that can side-line a runner for ages. Our local natural environment is a trump card to beat all others! The stunning and varied scenery, the knowledge of that Maori wisdom and the sheer enjoyment of getting up close and personal with nature makes me wonder why we ever bother to run on roads and pavements. So, here’s an off-road route to please the knees as well as your five senses and spirit of adventure. Catch the train to Lewes then set out along Lansdown Place, Friars Walk and Cliffe High Street. Slow the pace down as you negotiate the steep ascent up Chapel Hill to the Golf Club high above the Snowdrop Inn. Then take the ridge path eastwards for a kilometre before dropping down into the valley and up the other side to Mount Caburn. Pause to admire the view. Let it inspire you and fill your brain with the energy to carry on. Follow the path that takes you down to Glynde and a relaxing flat section of running towards Firle. From there choose your own route up on to the

Downs and stand atop the trig point at Firle Beacon for another energy-boosting view. From here, via Bo Peep car park, it’s almost all downhill to the outskirts of Seaford. The distance of that run is approximately 12–13 miles but because of the “hilly” terrain and off-roadness, it probably has the value of a 15-mile run. For anyone who is running their first ever marathon in either London or Brighton this April, I would ask them to make their next marathon an off-road event … and then compare the two experiences. Looking back at my cricket score of marathons the majority were off-road. They may have been slower than my road marathons, had fewer spectators and drink stations but they were generally cheaper to enter and had a greater sense of “in it together”. Weaving your way along a winding bridleway or footpath through a forest, navigating the route from written instructions with the ever present possibility of taking a wrong turning, means there’s a sense of achievement every time you successfully find the next drink station. To be fair though, most off-road marathons are well-signposted and adequately marshalled, and you also recover from them quicker than road marathons. Thanks to tireless fundraising by theatre members, and generous support from the Keith Baker Charitable Trust, the special needs groups were able to bring wheelchair users and members with mobility problems for the first time as the theatre has just completed its disabled access and inclusive washroom facilities. The audience of over 70 joined in with the sing-along songs, laughed at the one-liners and enjoyed the array of dazzling costumes on stage.

So what are the alternatives to Court?

In addition to discussing matters between yourselves (with or without legal advice) the options are: • Mediation • Collaborative Law • Arbitration

Can you tell me a little more about these options?

Collaborative Law The collaborative process involves each person having their own collaboratively trained lawyer and discussing issues in a series of meetings. The purpose of these meetings is not to be positional but instead is focused on talking issues through and working out what works for both parties and the family. As part of the collaborative process both the parties and their lawyers sign an agreement confirming that if Court proceedings are issued then the lawyers who have been part of the collaborative process will not act for the parties. This helps to focus the minds of those involved to try and reach agreement rather than simply going through the motions. This option can be used to resolve disputes over money and/or children and is a great way to negotiate Pre-Nuptial Agreements.

Mediation

Arbitration

This involves the couple meeting with an independent third party who is a trained mediator. The mediator’s role is not to advise them on the law itself but instead, to help facilitate communication between the couple in a safe environment.

Arbitration is perhaps the method that is most similar to the Court process and is aimed at circumstances where a couple simply cannot reach an agreement and require someone independent to make a decision which binds them as if it were a court order.

The process is very much focused on the couple remaining in control and working together to reach an agreement that is acceptable to both of them. One of the key benefits of mediation is that it can help a couple to maintain an amicable relationship and keep the lines of communication open. This is particularly important if the couple have children and will continue to have ongoing communication.

The couple can agree to refer the case to an Arbitrator and chose who makes the decision for them (Arbitration is only available for financial disputes and not for children disputes).

What if the issues are limited? If there is a situation where a couple have been able to reach an agreement over the majority of the issues but there are 1 or 2 key issues which are preventing the conclusion of the case, those individual issues can be referred to Arbitration for determination.

This process can be used to resolve financial disputes and children disputes.

Seahaven Lioness Club The Lionesses spent two very busy days in December persuading shoppers in Morrisons in Seaford to take part in their lucky receipt draw. For a payment of £1 the participants’ names were put into the drum, together with a note of how much they had spent on their shopping that day. At 5.00 o’clock on Saturday afternoon Morrisons Duty Manager, Amelia, drew the lucky ticket. The winner was a lady in Seaford who was very happy with the £56.00 she won. It all helps at this expensive time of year.

After paying the winner the event made a profit of just over £250, all of which will be sent to Lions International Philippines Disaster Appeal. There are Lions Clubs all over the world, including the Philippines, and the money donated will be distributed via the local Lions Clubs. Lions and Lionesses everywhere give their time for nothing, so administration costs are minimal and we can be confident that the money is being used where it is most needed. So thank you very much to all the people who supported this event and to Morrisons for allowing us to use their premises. Commiserations to those who didn’t win – better luck next time!

Recently our group visited the Victoria and Albert Museum to view the exhibition of “Masterpeices of Chinese Painting 700 – 1900” The pictures of all sizes from these early times dazzled with a wealth of fresh colour in contrast to ink. Natural pigments from plant and mineral sources were used with meticulous precision from these very early times. The methods and colours are still used today. Silk was a favoured base on which to paint. Wood, parchment and hemp were also used, often finishing a subject in gold. Natural subjects, people and landscape were all featured and often accompanied by calligraphy, poetry and seals. The paintings were displayed to perfection in this inspirational exhibition. 3 Clean out the inside of your greenhouse – remove all plants, wash and clean all glass and benches with Jeyes Fluid, use a smoke cone overnight if you want to, replace plants& pots etc ready for spring sowing. 3 Prune redcurrant, whitecurrant and blackcurrant bushes if no frost threatened. 3 Towards the end of the month give hedges their first cut of the year. 3 Put cloches in position to warm the soil before planting or sowing vegetables next month. Cloches should be in place for at least 3–4 weeks to be effective. 3 If we have snow, take care in the garden, keep paths clear, watch out for ice and check ponds.

can think of no flower other than the rose which has lasted for so many thousands of years and speaks in many different languages. The Romans, Greeks, Crusaders, Chinese, Europeans and Victorians all spoke in the language of the rose. Certainly since Victorian times the rose has been used to say Congratulations, Good Luck, Happy Birthday/Anniversary, Love and In Memoriam. The gift of a rose can now be made for any special moment. Modern roses, usually hybrid tea, floribunda, patio or miniature make a welcome addition to any garden. They can be planted amongst other flowers or on their own in a special area. They can also be grown in pots on a patio or paved area. Pots should be at least 18 to 24 inches in depth with adequate drainage. Plant in John Innes no. 3 and water well. Feed at least twice a year, in spring and again in the summer, with a good liquid fertiliser. Prune to keep an open shape. Watch out for signs of pests and diseases and spray at the first signs of attack. Roses for that “special moment” can be obtained from Haskins Roundstone Garden Centre (on the A259 Angmering), Wych Cross Garden Centre (A22 Ashdown Forest), Hillier Garden Centre (B2104 Stonecross) and at our local Paradise Park, Newhaven. So if you’re ever stuck with what to say, “Say it with a Rose”. Mike Parker

Now is the time to prepare to plant your potatoes. Anyone who regularly grows vegetables usually grows potatoes but if you’re new to gardening or new to growing your own veg then please read on. Firstly it is most important that you grow potatoes from certified seed so check with your supplier. If you have not already dug the ground last autumn then do this as soon as possible. Place new seed potatoes in a tray or egg box in a light but cool, frost-free place. They will then start to sprout young shoots. This is not essential but can lead to a better crop later in the year. Potatoes like to be well fed so dig in plenty of manure or compost. Potatoes are graded into three main types, First and Second Earlies then Main crop. Sow First Earlies from March, Second from April and Mains from late April to May. Sow at a depth of at least 4–5 inches and 12 inches apart. As they appear above ground start to “earth them up” by raking the soil into peaks. Harvest from June to September. You can also successfully grow potatoes in containers or bags. These need to be 18 to 20 inches or more in depth and watered well during the year. If you are pleased with the potatoes that you have grown then why not make an entry in our August Show, they may be prize winners!

Seaford Gardening Club At the start of my January report I mentioned the weather we should expect for the beginning of 2014 and into the spring. Unfortunately it has been worse than we hoped, what with high winds, and rain, rain and more rain! The ground is so saturated that not much can be done except tidy up the greenhouse, shed or garden in general. Stories of floods, electricity cuts and damage in some parts of the country have been upsetting to hear and read about. I suppose there is “light at the end of the tunnel” with spring appearing at some stage! At least the bulbs are beginning to push through the ground with winter jasmine and honeysuckle helping to brighten the grey days. The Club held its Christmas meal in December so there are no talk details to report. A number of members and guests enjoyed a delicious meal at The Avondale Hotel in Seaford with the room and tables nicely decorated for the occasion. Jane, Martin and their staff made us most welcome. There was the traditional raffle and quiz, which some found harder to solve than others! Everyone went home suitably fed, watered and entertained – a very good evening. The Club does need a new Speakers’ Secretary from October 2014. We are hoping someone will come forward to fill the post as without a replacement the Club may have to fold after 29 years. Any member (or non-member who would like to join) who feels they could help please contact Anne on 01323 491331. Our next talk, by Peter Hill, entitled “Pills, Potions and Patience” will be on Wednesday, 26 February at the Clinton Centre, Clinton Place, Seaford, starting at 7.30 pm. Please use the front door opposite Tesco. The entrance fee is £2 for a visitor or £10 to join for the year – there are no extra charges. Refreshments are available, if required and raffles are held on some evenings.

Forget the wind that has been howling around town and the almost unceasing rain at the start of the new year and join us in revelling in the first signs of spring. Seaford Community Garden at the Crouch seems to have something in flower right around the calendar and while you might be forgiven for thinking that January and February are the most gloomy of months, just cast your eyes downwards and see the precious jewels that are somewhat daringly poking themselves out of the soil right now. By the time you read this the snowdrops should be looking lovely, and our famous hellebore bed just to the right as you come in through the big open gates, should be looking marvellous. They seem to get better every year so expect to see, as well as the woodland green ones, an amazing range of colours including red, pinks, whites and a greyish variety that always excites much comment. We planted many more bulbs in the garden last year so are hoping for a good display in the spring. Already we

can look ahead to blossoming glory as we chart the new green shoots emerging. And don’t forget, we have bulbs available at the sales tables for a small donation. Of course we make no excuse for spending a lot of time in the dark months just chatting about the garden, making plans for it, and, um, eating and supping copious amounts of tea and coffee. And this year, instead of avoiding the drips in the poly tunnel we’ve got our wonderful new classroom in which to shelter from the weather. When we can drag ourselves away from its cosiness there’s plenty of tidying up to do, cutting back and preparing beds for the first sowings. Do come and see the garden for yourselves and get to know us if you haven’t already been. We are open each Wednesday from 9.30am to 12.30pm and look forward to greeting visitors and giving them the guided tour. There’s always something different to see. The Garden Team
