NEWS FROM ThE ROTARY CLUB OF SEAFORD On Saturday 1st December 2012 there was a flurry of activity at opposite ends of the Crouch as two groups of people busied themselves with spades, forks and other horticultural paraphernalia. Co-ordinated by Keith Blackburn, Chairman of the Seaford Tree Wardens, the Rotary Club of Seaford were planting in the North West corner of the football pitch area, while a Neighbours group were simultaneously planting in the Bramber Road entrance to the Crouch. Advised by Ashley Stephenson LVO (Lieutenant of the Royal Victorian Order), ex-Bailiff of the Royal Parks, the Rotary planting was of a flowering tree and saplings to commemorate the Club’s 65th birthday, as it was “born” in 1947. Also installed was an automatic irrigation system. As an added bonus, it is hoped that students from the Eastbourne campus of Sussex Downs College will be growing wild flowers from seed and then planting them out around the Rotary trees. The Neighbours group, led by Michael Harmer, were supported by Seaford Town Council and the Big Tree Plant, a Government Defra initiative. Three young ladies formed a Mercread Team helping the Neighbours. For more information about The Big Tree Plant go to http://www.defra.gov.uk/bigtreeplant/ If anyone passing Newlands School in Seaford recently was captivated by an aroma of 5 star cooking it was probably from the first competition to find the Seaford Young Chef of the Year, organised by the Rotary Club of Seaford. Open to all students aged 11 to 17 who live or attend a school in Seaford, the entrants prepared a healthy two-course meal for two people consisting of a main course and either a starter

or dessert and costing not more than £10. Judging was by catering professionals Roy Perrett, Vice President of the Craft Guild of Chefs, and Stefano Diella, owner of Diella’s Restaurant in Dane Road in Seaford - they had the hard task of tasting the range of dishes prepared by the chefs. Typical of these was a starter of Butternut Squash and Pine Nut Salad, a main course of Salmon and Prawn Bake with potatoes, served with salsa verde and spinach salad, while desserts included Asian Pear and Orange Flambé on a light meringue served with vanilla Greek-style yoghurt, and Lemon Mousse in a filo pastry cup with raspberry coulis. All the competitors received certificates to commemorate the event and prizes were awarded to the top three, who were Mollie Woodward, Josh Pollins and Maisy Labib. Presenting the prizes, Rotary Club President Paul Vaesen congratulated all the chefs on their skills and hoped this could be the first of many such competitions. He also thanked the judges for bringing a professional approach to the competition and reserved special thanks for Newlands School for so willingly making available their excellent facilities. President Paul and his wife Daphne visited Seaford Gymnastics Academy to present them with a cheque for £300. The Academy was formed in January 2008 by Lorraine McKenzie to provide a friendly club of recreational and squad gymnastics, for girls and boys across junior age groups. Sessions are held on Tuesday and Thursday evenings and on Saturday mornings at Newlands School for children aged 4 years and upwards, and currently there are 130 members. In April this year, seven of their older main squad girls competed in the Chichester four-piece competition and collectively won 2 Gold medals, 2 Silver Medals and 2 Bronze Medals, which was a great achievement! The donation will buy a much-needed modular block, which will enable the gymnasts to practise their hand springs from the vault more effectively. It will also help the

coaches to reach the gymnasts on the high bar of the asymmetric bars, which will help the gymnasts with their training on this apparatus. President Paul said “The Rotary Club of Seaford is keen to encourage youngsters in the town in their involvement with sports, and we are delighted to provide some help to this thriving Gymnastics Academy.” Louise Collins from Chestnut Tree House came to collect a £300 donation to our local Children’s Hospice. We try to support this charity on a fairly regular basis, and a previous visit and talk from Louise had updated members of the Club on Chestnut Tree House progress. On this occasion the donation was to help with running costs. For more information about Chestnut Tree House visit http://www.chestnuttree-house.org.uk/
development of the lifeboat itself from being a vessel powered solely by oars and occasionally sail, to the present 25 knots state-of-the art lifeboats that operate today. Our Boot, Craft and Produce Fairs were very successful in 2012 (apart from occasional difficulties with the weather), and in 2013 we shall have seven Sunday Fairs at the Martello Fields. Dates will be 21st April, 19th May, 16th June, 14th July, 11th August, 8th September and 6th October. We look forward to seeing you there. We have now recovered from our Sleigh rounds marathon, and wish to thank all of our supporters including Friends of Rotary, families of Rotarians, and of course all those who turned out to see Father Christmas and his elves.
We wish you all a very happy New Year Photos: left from top: Tree planting: Keith Blackburn directs, while President Paul Vaesen, Isla Sitwell, Mike Logan & Gerry Peachey dig; Seaford Gymnastics Academy: President Paul Vaesen with Lorraine McKenzie and girls; Young Chef competition winner, Mollie Woodward with President Paul; Chestnut Tree House: Louise Collins with President Paul.
Guest speaker Mike Tubb, the Operations Manager of Newhaven Lifeboat Station, came to speak to the Club and told us that the Royal National Lifeboat Institution was founded in 1824 by Sir William Hillary for the sole purpose of saving life at sea. It is a voluntary organisation both in terms of the fact that it is funded entirely by voluntary contributions and, with the exception of the Coxswain or Mechanic at all-weather lifeboat stations, all of the crew are volunteers. It is possibly unique as a charity in that it operates in both the U.K. and the Republic of Ireland. Since records began to be kept in the 1850s, over 139,000 lives have been saved by RNLI lifeboats. Mike went on to outline the history of the Newhaven station, illustrating his talk with some slides. He said that its foundation in 1803, which predated that of the RNLI by some 21 years, was as a result of an initiative by a number of local worthies who had felt the need for action following the loss of HMS Brazen in 1800, which foundered on the rocks close to Newhaven with the loss of 105 lives. They decided to form a committee and with the aid of a £50 donation from Lloyds of London purchased a lifeboat for the town. He then briefly outlined some of the more noteworthy rescues carried out over the years and spoke about the

SEAFORD NATURAL hISTORY SOCIETY All the best for 2013 from Seaford Natural History Society – we look forward to seeing current and new members in the New Year. We are a friendly group of people with an interest in wildlife, and particularly the plants and animals of East Sussex. In the winter, we arrange illustrated talks, usually on local flora and fauna - on 15 January our topic is ‘Woodland Archaeology: Understanding a walk in the woods’ with Vivienne Blandford from the Institute of Field Archaeology. On the 29th of January David Bradford will be talking about ‘Sussex in Close-up’, looking at the smaller things in the countryside. See the listing at the back of Seaford Scene for dates and details. Visitors are welcome – we ask for a donation of £3 (which will be deducted from your membership if you decide to join the society). In the spring, summer and autumn, we arrange outdoor meetings, usually gentle strolls of around two hours. For more information about the society, please visit our website www.seafordnaturalhistory.org.uk or ring 01323 491964.

OUT AND ABOUT IN JANUARY Whilst there is plenty for the birder to see at this time of the year - Black Headed Gulls, Little Egrets, Grey Herons, a variety of ducks such as Shelduck, Wigeon, Teal, Mallard, and Shoveler, as well as Lapwing, and Canada and Greylag Geese (below) can all be seen in the Cuckmere valley - there is little to catch the eye on the ground. Many plants are in leaf but few are in flower – but you can look out for the white of snowdrops and the blue of lesser periwinkle, harbingers of more colour to come in the spring. Even in January, there is always something to draw people out into the countryside. Local woodlands, like Friston Forest, are worth visiting in the depth of winter, especially on fine crisp days. Without leaf cover, you can see the trunks of the trees silhouetted by the low sun – the beeches with their conical, tall, slender trunks and smooth grey bark look particularly good at this time of the year.

SEAFORD CHORAL SOCIETY CONCERT
Saturday 1st December 2012 St Leonard’s Church, Seaford
Counter-tenors are splendid fellows, but they had no place in the ‘traditional’ line-up of soloists in the Watkins Shaw version of Messiah as presented by Seaford Choral Society in their Winter Concert. Instead, we had the admirable quartet of Alexandra Stephenson (soprano), Rebecca Anstey (alto), William Blake (tenor) and Thomas Faulkner (bass). Special mention must be made of Ms Anstey, whose warm tone was admirable suited to her impassioned rendering of “He was despised”. We should have liked to have heard more of her. Mr Faulkner is a young bass of whom we shall doubtless hear more in the future. He skilfully negotiated the tricky runs as he raged furiously in “Why do the nations?” and his stentorian rendering of “The Trumpet...” sounded to the farthest reaches of Seaford. Providing an impressive framework to the four soloists
was the ensemble under the capable direction of Sion Parry, who led the Exceat Players, Nicholas Houghton (harpsichord), and, not least, the ladies and gentlemen of the Choral Society. The choir was in excellent voice and the enthusiasm and fervour of their rendering warmed their audience on a cold December night. Messiah is so familiar that the challenges it can present to choirs is sometimes overlooked. However, the Seaford Choristers took all in their stride and the sopranos, especially, must be commended for the way in which they tackled their high-flying line in “The Hallelujah Chorus”. The concert reached a triumphant conclusion with an exultant “Amen Chorus” and the audience left the performers in no doubt as to their appreciation of a wonderful evening of music-making. Bravo, Seaford Choral Society, ninety-five years old and going strong, hopefully, for another 95. A total of £445 was raised in the retiring collection for the Seaford Kurlers. Amfortas

Running Commentary... The weather was cold, very wet and windy, and the conditions underfoot were muddy and very slippery. The one hundred runners who had gathered at the start line were nervously hopping from one foot to the other or standing quietly, trying to reassure themselves that it would be OK while some were chatting furiously, probably as a distraction from facing the reality of the situation. It was called the Little Pell Hell Mud Run and was nearly 5 miles long. This new off-road event, close to Bewl Water and Wadhurst, was not only very hilly but also had a number of unspecified obstacles for the runners to negotiate. The list of reasons for not taking part in the event was long and obvious but seemed to be lost on the runners, as they had… not fear etched on their faces… but delight, and not the look of ‘why me’ in their demeanour but ‘why not?’ The race organiser, Albert Kemp, then picked up the loud speaker and called out… three… two… one… go!… and off they went. Picking out some of the main features of the race that they had to tackle - very soon after the start there was a wall of tyres and a log fence to jump or climb over and a huge tractor tyre to climb through. Further on was a large expanse of netting to crawl under and wriggle forward like snakes in deep mud. Going through a wood there were ropes strung across the pathway forcing runners to scramble under and over and weave their way through to the next hazard… knee deep water to wade through and a stretch of waist-deep water to cross, numbing the legs for the rest of the race. Repeatedly, runners had to summon up the strength and stamina to follow zig-zagging routes up and down steep, grassy hills, and every field gate that they met had to be climbed, not opened. With nearly 31 minutes on the clock, the first runner crossed the finishing line. The sole Seaford runner, Claire Keith, came home in 17th place and was the 2nd lady to finish. Intriguingly, all runners completed the course with smiles on their faces. The big question is… why? And why do runners put themselves through such pain and torment? Can they really enjoy it? For those people who think that runners and joggers are a few feathers short of a chicken, the description of this race probably confirms it. In my experience I would say that the muddiest event in England is the ‘Tough Guy’ race (approximately 12 miles long) near Wolverhampton. It is expensive to enter, contains plenty of extremely difficult hazards, finishing with a 2-mile section known as the killing
14
fields. It’s always oversubscribed and because it is held at the end of January there is invariably thick ice on all of the water hazards... including a part which has to be swum!! I’m sure the Little Pell Hell Mud Run is aiming to be the muddiest race in Sussex, which, on this occasion was made more gruelling by the cold and windy weather… or maybe it plans to challenge the Tough Guy as the toughest in the Country. If you are inspired to have a go at a challenging cross country event this month, and you have some decent off-road trainers, I suggest you try the East Sussex XC league race at Snape Wood, Wadhurst on the 13th January. Martin Bulger, founder member of Seaford Striders Running Club
WhAT’S ON FOR YOUNG PEOPLE IN SEAFORD?
Two local community workers have come together to promote an event to showcase activities for young people in Seaford aged 11 to 18. Carolyn Lambert and Vicky Martin explain: “As two people who are active in the local community, we often hear that there is not enough on offer for young people in Seaford. We believe that there is a great deal happening but perhaps young people are not aware of the huge range of activities that is available for them. We are organising an event to bring together as many as possible of the organisations who are offering something for young people and to invite young people to come along and see what they can take part in. We also hope that the event will help organisations to work together to pool resources when funding is scarce. We are contacting all the organisations we know about, but would really like to hear from anyone offering activities for young people in Seaford aged 11 – 18. We would also like to hear from any young people who might be interested in helping on the day or doing a short performance.” The event is being held at Seaford Baptist Church on Saturday March 2nd between 2 and 6 pm.

The last four years have been fantastic for Seaford & Blatchington LTC, especially this year, which has been recognised by Sussex Tennis who awarded it ‘Club of the Year’. The prestigious award was presented at the Amex stadium during the Sussex Tennis Awards ceremony and was received by Steve Williams, chairman at the time, who has since handed his position to newly appointed chairman, Clive Sparks. The club has progressed leaps and bounds in this time, for example, the addition of state of the art floodlights over 3 of the acrylic courts meaning that all 7 courts are now floodlit. Also, the resurfacing of the three astro courts with top of the range astro-turf has made S&B one of the best equipped tennis clubs in Sussex. Above all, however, the most important and noticeable leap forward that the club has made, is with generating a buzzing, friendly and unrivalled community atmosphere. Everyone in the club knows and mixes with each other, whether they are juniors, adults, team members or social players; everybody loves playing and socialising at the club. A lot of this is down to the busy social calendar that the club boasts, with raucous quiz nights, competitive men’s and lady’s nights, fun junior parties and social grand-slam tournaments. There are plenty of events throughout the year to keep everyone on their toes. Dan Stoner, head coach, and Matt Golledge, assistant coach, have put together a thorough and effective coaching programme where there are group and individual lessons available for players of all ages and

All classes are suitable for all levels of fitness Call ALEX 07540 551054 totsandtums.co.uk abilities. The evidence of the unquestionable quality of their teaching is in the club’s team results in the Sussex county leagues. The men’s 1st team have twice won the 1st division and have a chance of qualifying for the NCL (National Club League). Such success has sparked interest from other players looking for a new club, some as for away as Jersey. The Men’s 2nd team has won their division again last season, which they have done more than 7 times in a row. In total there are 6 men’s and 2 lady’s teams which all are showing great promise and moving up the divisions. Some of the juniors have also been victorious with the 14 & Under Boys winning their division in the very first season in which they have competed. The club always welcomes new members, including anyone who wishes to play competitively, or simply try the sport for the first time. There is something for everyone at Seaford & Blatchington LTC and they want as many people to be a part of this amazing club experience as possible. WINTER BLUES? RESTORATIVE PILATES AT CUCkMERE hAVEN COULD BE JUST ThE ThING! Long evenings are here again and after Christmas as winter draws on it’s back to business as usual. In the cold we tend to hunch up against the wind, our joints stiffen, and if it’s wet or icy we may try to avoid going at all - after all it’s time to hunker down and hibernate – if only! Yet, winter is also a time of incredible beauty, the structure of nature revealed in trees bared against the sky, leaf skeletons, frost on the garden, snow-laden branches of the forest, low tide after a winter storm. It’s important to keep active at this time of year and getting out in the fresh air is still one of the best ways to clear the mind and lift our spirits. Just as we feel most deprived of the sun, the light is returning and exercising, wrapped up well, in the fresh air is fun, increases circulation and inner warmth, boosts our immune system and replenishes our vitamin D. More than just a form of exercise, Pilates awakens awareness of the body

and how we use it, helping us to manage the physical and emotional changes we experience daily, through the seasons and stages of our lives. Being in nature can inspire and energize our Pilates practice, and instill a sense of connection with the landscape. In addition to year-round weekly classes, Movement for Life Pilates is offering a unique opportunity to keep active and at the same time to slow down and indulge in two days of restorative Pilates, walking and meditative relaxation with experienced Pilates teacher, Karen Hall, in the charm and hospitality of Cuckmere Cottage in the coastal beauty spot of Cuckmere Haven. Tuition will be in small groups offering an intimate introduction to Pilates for beginners and a refreshing approach for those with more experience. Keep strong and supple, taking time out for yourself to breath, soak up the beauty of this stunning location, release stress and deepen awareness and wellbeing to recharge, welcome and move into a happy and healthy New Year! NEW YEAR NEW hOBBY Eat healthily, start exercising, get more sleep… As you list your usual New Year resolutions, why not add in something fun for once? January is the perfect time to lift your spirits out of a winter slump by starting a new hobby, and there have never been so many activities to try. To narrow down your choice, think about what you’d like to add your life. Do you want to meet more people? Be more active? Learn a skill? Get creative? You may want to develop something that you are already interested in, or try something completely new. Look around to find out what’s going on. Your adult education centre and library will be able to help, and you’ll find information in cafés, newsagents, community centres and local magazines. If you were inspired by the 2012 Olympics, you could try a new sport or exercise class, but getting fit doesn’t have to mean sport. Why not follow the Strictly contestants and sample the benefits of ballroom dancing or Zumba, or simply aim to get out more and enjoy the countryside? Geocaching is an exciting new outdoor activity that the whole family can enjoy. It’s essentially a high-tech treasure hunt. Another new trend is roller derby – a fast-paced contact sport where teams race to lap the opposition as they skate around the track. If you fancy using your mind more than your body, you
could learn a new language in preparation for a foreign holiday perhaps. Or build on an existing interest by joining a photography class or book group. Music can reduce stress and improve your mood, so why not dust off that instrument you haven’t touched for years and join an amateur orchestra? Choirs are increasingly popular and you’re sure to find a range of musical styles available. Crafts have had a real boost lately, with knitting and sewing groups setting up all over the country. Jewellery and card-making are also satisfying. You can get started quite cheaply and pick up the basics quickly. The bonus is that you get to keep the end result, or give it as a gift. You also have the potential to earn money by selling your creations. Increased access to computers means that we can get involved in a whole host of new communities without even leaving the house. Many of us enjoy researching our family trees and finding the facts behind our memories. It’s also easy to use social networks to track down old school friends and colleagues that we’ve lost touch with. And if none of these is for you, how about foraging, meditation, wine-tasting, line-dancing, magic tricks, bee-keeping, historical re-enactments, home baking… the list really is endless! Alex Brown
A GOOD READ Clown by Quentin Blake
Can you tell a story without words? Well, Quentin Blake can, and in Clown he does. The book consists entirely of illustrations, in Blake’s well loved and instantly recognisable style. Our hero, Clown, finds himself thrown into the dustbin, along with a number of other toys. He escapes, dusts himself off, and sets out to find someone who can help him to rescue his friends. Along the way he finds himself in a fancydress competition, entertaining a rather fierce-looking dog, and possibly finding himself a home – all without words. The beauty of the story is that while Blake’s illustrations carry the narrative forward, the reader can
26
choose their own way of telling it. No two versions are ever the same, as each child brings to the book their own language and rhythms. Clown himself is wonderfully expressive, and the pictures are enough to have you laughing out loud in several places. An absolutely marvellous book, which every child should read – and which every adult will enjoy too. Kath Bennett

Mockford’s the Blindmakers Specialists in quality handmade vertical and roller blinds
The Industrial estate, GREEN STREET, EASTBOURNE, BN21 1QN OPEN 9.30PM TO 1PM MON TO SAT. Telephone: 01323 417518 So many of Jean and Harvey Mockford’s Seaford customers recommend them or place new orders, that they do not need to advertise, however many are unaware that the ten year lease on the shop in Sutton Road has expired. As their customers in Seaford are too numerous to contact individually, this notice of their address and telephone number will appear in the Seaford Scene each month. Nothing else has changed, they still regard themselves as Seaford’s Blindmakers albeit based 15 minutes away in Eastbourne, where their headquarters have been for more than a quarter of a century. To telephone for after-sales service, or to arrange for Jean to call to estimate for new blinds (that are guaranteed for 20 years) or if you wish to visit the showroom... take the 259 from Seaford, on approaching Eastbourne go straight ahead at the traffic lights, then by the Tally Ho pub turn left into Green Street and the industrial estate is up a driveway opposite the first bus shelter.

Don’t Let Mould Take A hold – With Seaford home hardware Your bathroom should be a place of tranquillity and somewhere to relax and soak away your cares. So if, as you sink into your nice hot bath, all you can think about is how those black speckles on the tile grout seem to have increased in the past few days, you may be wondering if you’re sharing your “me time” with some alien life-form. In a way you are. What you’re seeing is mould. It’s neither plant nor animal. It is, in fact, a fungi that thrives in warm, damp places. Humidity that forms in poorly ventilated spaces where moisture is prevalent offers the ideal conditions for mould growth, like your bathroom or kitchen. Mould spores not only look unsightly, they can aggravate respiratory problems, particularly in asthma sufferers and young children, so you’ll do well to tackle the problem before it takes hold. Fortunately, there are a number of solutions available at Seaford Home Hardware. We particularly recommend HG Mould Spray, awarded the coveted Good Housekeeping Institute Approved logo for excellence. It is specially formulated to kill spores, and includes a bleaching agent to restore the appearance of grout and silicone sealants around baths and shower trays, or in the kitchen.

A VIEW FROM ThE POTTING ShED
We have arranged an interesting series of monthly social evenings with specialist talks covering the growing of various flowers & vegetables, local and natural history. We also hope to increase the number of our popular coach outings from three to four during the year culminating in a pre-Christmas trip to the Brugge Festive Market. All of these new events will be detailed in the 2013 Programme & Show Schedule which is free to members. The annual membership subscription is unchanged at £6 for the whole household. This is excellent value during the continuing financial climate. New members are always welcome. For more details please visit www.seaford-sussex.co.uk/sdhs. irstly, a ‘Happy New Year’ to everybody. January 2013 sees the start of a new gardening year for members of the Seaford & District Horticultural Society and it will be a year of change. One major change will be the venue of our Annual Show in August, which will move from the Waves Leisure Centre to the Main Hall at Seaford College in Arundel Road. This will be a challenge for our show management team but I am confident that visitors to the show will not be disappointed. We will work hard to ensure that our visitors still enjoy this annual feast of flowers, fruit, vegetables, arts, crafts and domestic produce. Our Coffee Morning and Summer Show will be in June and this year we will have the addition of Children’s Classes.

Nomenclature or the Naming and Classification of plants Many people ask why do we use Latin names for plants? Why not use easy or common names. Take for example the Rose of Sharon. This same name is often given to two distinct plants Hypericum Calycinum and Hibiscus Syriacus, neither of which are actually roses! This could lead to confusion. In the 18th century the Swedish naturalist Carl Linnaeus designed a system for naming and classifying plants and later animals which avoided any confusion. Latin was at that time a universal but little-used language. Where there were no relevant Latin words then they used a Greek word instead; if that did not exist then a general description was used. The first word is the Genera (Genus) or Family of the plant. The second word is the Species; this is an adjective use to describe the plant’s characteristics. Take the Acer Palmatum. (Japanese Mapel) Acer means Maple, Palmatum means “shaped liked a palm or hand”. A third Latin name may then be added to denote a sub-species (Acer Palmatum Dissectum) where the leaves are finely shredded or dissected. Lastly, if you then have specific cultivars then a fourth description can be added, Acer Palmatum Dissectum Flavescens. (Flavescens means greenish yellow). Carl Linnaeus’s system is still used today all over the world to avoid any confusion between different languages and countries. When you now look at plant labels you may often notice how their Latin names give an indication to their English equivalent, for example: Folias means leaves, Florus means flowers, Compactus is small, Rubra is red, Glaucus is blue/grey and Aurea is golden Yellow. The trouble is that it is often difficult to get your tongue round a Latin name so it is often easier to stick to common or recognisable names and hope for the best.

SEAFORD GARDENING CLUB A Happy New Year to you all with the hope that 2013 brings you much happiness and good fortune. Now that all the festivities of Christmas and the New Year are over our thoughts will turn to planning and ordering seeds and plants ready to make our gardens colourful and productive in the coming months. Let’s hope the winter is not too severe. At our November 2012 meeting Dr Anthony Mace gave a very informative talk entitled ‘An Introduction to Cacti and Succulents’. He told us that he had been growing these interesting plants since he was nine years old! In the wild they grow in semi-desert conditions, mainly in America, South Africa and the Canary Islands. They should be cultivated in a John Innes type soil with added grit and potted on every 2 to 3 years in either plastic or clay pots. Overwatering can be a problem causing a rotting of the root system. All will flower at some stage but some are slower than others to do so, but the end-results, when they produce such
42
a wide range of colours etc., are worth waiting for. Of course, they must be protected from frost in a cold greenhouse or indoors on south-facing window sills. He then showed us slides of his 20 x 50 ft greenhouse containing some 5,000 plants. They vary in shape and size with a variety of colour in the flowers. The audience was shown a few slides of some plants he and his wife had collected and nurtured for many years. At one point a hole had to be cut in the greenhouse roof to accommodate one which had outgrown the height space! A very interesting talk with many questions asked and answered with his knowledge and expertise. Our next talk on Wednesday, 30 January at 7.30 pm in the Clinton Centre, Clinton Place, Seaford, will be by Kevin Gordon and entitled ‘A Walk Around Alfriston’. Entrance is by the door at the side opposite the Tesco store. Visitors are very welcome for a fee of £2, or you can become a member for a fee of £10 (renewable each September). There is no extra payment to attend a meeting. More information can be obtained by phoning Anne Silk on 01323 491331 or visit the website www.seaford-sussex.co.uk/sgc. Come and join us for a friendly get together – you may like what we offer and become a member.

SEAFORD TREE WARDENS WE NEED TREES MORE THAN EVER The tragic loss of so many ash trees will change our landscapes. But civil engineers, who have not had much time for trees in the past, are beginning to refocus on “soft engineering” - reforestation of catchment areas, tree planting to stabilise river and railway embankments and so on. The idea that we can tidily pave over everything is last century’s solution. In Seaford there is a groundswell of support for planting more trees, and the Tree Wardens are trying hard to deliver that in these straitened times. On 1 December, there was a highly successful planting of trees at The Crouch, involving the Mercread Youth Club, Rotary, and other helpful volunteers and neighbours - croissants were A1- Thanks! In February, the children of Chyngton Primary School and residents of Saltwood and Millberg Roads will get together to give their area a lift by planting more than twenty trees in the verges. We are catching up with the list of other residents who have asked to do the same. Some planting can be in February, some (sigh!) may have to wait for next financial year. We also have an embryo Wild Flower Group, which will work to plant or revive wild flowers in public areas. The Big Tree Plant has given a welcome grant, but they chiefly want us to plant “whips”, which are much too small for street trees. Several kind residents have started to foster baby trees until they are three years old and can be planted out. If you have a bit of garden space and would like to help in February, please email <margerydiamand@ hotmail.com>or walter.tillyard@btinternet.com Tree wardens will deliver 30cm (1ft) pots, seedlings and advice if you need it. Please recycle this magazine when you have finished with it.

Cedric came to Seaford from London with his wife Hazel and their family in 1969. A plumber, he worked at Newhaven Harbour until his retirement. Before that, he had become involved with the pond and played a large part in its rescue from dereliction in 1980, leading the team which excavated it and laying the plastic liner which still holds the water today. A keen member of the East Blatchington Pond Conservation Society, which seeks to conserve one of the town’s beauty spots, he was appointed Pond Manager about 25 years ago, and today, at the age of 80, is often seen chest deep in waders tending the pond and working hard alongside a small team of volunteers. What do you most enjoy about your job? Seeing how much pleasure the pond gives to people, especially the children who come down to feed the ducks. What do you like best about Seaford? The sense of community and always meeting people that I know, along with the wonderful surrounding countryside in which I like to walk with my wife, and the sea to swim in. What book are you reading? One of Bernard Cornwell’s historical novels. What is your favourite film? The latest Bond, Skyfall. Which living person do you most admire? David Attenborough. What words or phrases do you most overuse? “I’m just going to walk round the pond...” How do you relax? Walking in the countryside where the wild flowers inspire me. I like to bring the natural countryside to the pond. What has been your most embarrassing moment? Falling off the island into the water. What is your favourite journey? Cycling in the Outer Hebrides. What is the best advice you have ever been given? I take my own advice. What is your favourite song or piece of music? My musical tastes are pretty widespread, and I love opera, Elgar and Bach in particular. How would you spend a million pounds? I would buy an area of farmed downland and restore it to natural pasture. Which person in history would you most like to meet? Gilbert White, the 18th-century naturalist. What is your most memorable learning experience? Restoring the pond after the 1987 hurricane. What would your motto be? Carry on regardless. What is your idea of perfect happiness? The pond looking beautiful with all the work completed. Dream on...

OK so it is winter. So I am not best pleased. I want the sunshine and warmth!! The Seaford Kurlers however, will be there at the Leisure Centre to get you all warmed up, and enjoying the company of our friendly group. We took a group of kurlers to the Speed Ice Show at the Brighton Centre on the 23rd November. It was an amazing show. Very fast, very noisy and very, very good. Once again we were safely transported there by one of ESDA’s (East Sussex Disability Association) coaches. The in-house tournament has now finished. The winners were Barbara Bradley and Joyce Lane (for the second year running) and the runners up were Eileen Ward and Jan Haydock. The presentation of the shield was done at our annual Christmas Lunch at the Drove, Newhaven on Tuesday 4th December, 2013. We also presented Jordan Meeks with a keepsake cup for winning the Bob Matthews Achievement Cup. As you can see we are not just serious sporty types. We have fun playing the game of new age kurling and we socialise as well. Kurling is a game that can be played by all ages and by any level of physical ability. Still not sure?? Give us a try... We meet every Tuesday at 2pm until 4pm at the Downs Leisure Centre, with a break half way. The Alzheimer’s Society has argued that money wasted on sedative drugs should be spent on training care home staff to deliver good quality dementia care. Research has shown that anti-psychotics have minimal benefit and drastically increase the risk of medical complications, leaving people with dementia robbed of their quality of life. At Clifden House we reduce the use of all unnecessary and harmful medication, allowing our residents to lead a full and active life in a purpose built environment where the care team are able to offer the assistance that they need.

MAD PRESENTS ‘ThE WIzARD OF Oz’ by John Morley 18th – 26th January (except Sun 20th) 2013 at Meeching Hall, Newhaven Meeching Amateur Dramatics (MAD) has decided to return with flamboyance and passion to giving Newhaven its very own pantomime for 2013. We are talking about an incredible version of ‘The Wizard of Oz’, written by John Morley, who in the past has prepared scripts for literally all the great stars of professional pantomime, for theatres like the London Palladium and for television. So be prepared for MAD, who in its own vibrant way intend to enchant and thrill you with this ‘Wiz’ of a pantomime, which faithfully follows the original story of Dorothy and her three friends Scarecrow, Tinman and Cowardly Lion, in the land of Oz. This is a pantomime for adults and children and includes music, dance, fun and mayhem, so come along and support your local theatre. Remember our ticket prices are reasonable and that the last pantomime MAD produced in 2006 (Hercules – the Panto) won a national award

LOCAL SEAFORD BUSINESS PICkS UP PRESTIGIOUS EASTBOURNE AWARD The best of Eastbourne’s businesses gathered last month for the 10th Eastbourne Business Awards 2012, which was held at the Grand Hotel, Eastbourne. The gala lunch, compered by Meridian Tonight presenter Fred Dinenage and sponsored by the Eastbourne & District Chamber of Commerce Ltd, in partnership with Edeal, honoured businesses from across the area. This was a chance for local businesses to receive the recognition they deserve and one of these companies was Badger Inks, based in Seaford, who picked up the Highly Commended Award for Service and Support, sponsored by the Lynette Baldwin of Baldwin Training Centre (right in photo). Managing director Alasdair Fortune said, “It has been a tough year with price increases from Royal Mail and commission increases from eBay and Amazon but we have still managed to keep our prices keen”. He added “I would like to thank all the staff at Badger Inks for their tremendous efforts and our customers for continuing to believe in us as a company that tries to give the best price and service in the market.”
Since the company started back in May 2009, we have worked hard to offer a wide range of both compatible and original ink and toner cartridges. Our main market is currently online but we are working hard to reach the local market. It is lovely when people pop in to see us in our office, which is in the town centre just above Phillip Mann Estate Agents. We are happy to offer advice on any of our products and if we haven’t got it in stock, we’ll do our very best to get it for you.

how much redundancy pay am i Entitled to? The asking of this poignant question has been an unfortunate sign of the times of late. For the majority of people, the answer to this question is quite simple, however there are a few other things that are worth bearing in mind if you find yourself facing redundancy. thE basics Employers are only legally obliged to make redundancy payments to members of their workforce who satisfy all of the below criteria: 1. The person is an employee (i.e. not self employed or another category of worker). 2. Upon the date that they are to be made redundant (i.e. their last working day for the employer), the employee has worked for the employer for a continuous period of more than two complete years.
• Half a week’s pay for each complete year of service under the age of 22. The amount of a “week’s pay” is capped, and the current rate is £430. This rate is usually increased each year, typically around February. In addition, only a maximum of 20 years’ service can be taken into account when calculating a redundancy payment. The current maximum statutory redundancy payment, therefore, is £12,900. othEr points to consiDEr It is also worth investigating whether your employer is likely to make any payments over and above the statutory amount. You might find this in your contract of employment or within a redundancy policy. losing your EntitlEmEnt to a rEDunDancy paymEnt
3. The reason the employee is being dismissed, is either for redundancy, or because they have become eligible for a redundancy payment because they have been laid off or kept on shorttime working.
The right to a redundancy payment can be lost. Examples of how an employee can cause this include:
Due to point 2 above, it can sometimes be the case that an employer will consider paying employees “in lieu of notice” to avoid them completing their second year of service during their notice period, and therefore becoming entitled to a redundancy payment.
2. Failure to work their contractual notice period.
thE amount payablE By law, the calculation for a statutory redundancy payment is as follows: • One and a half weeks’ pay for each complete year of service after age 41. • One week’s pay for each complete year of service between ages 22 and 40.
70
1. Unreasonably rejecting an offer of suitable alternative employment.
3. Misconduct – if an employee is dismissed for gross misconduct without notice before their redundancy payment otherwise becomes due. by Katie White, Employment solicitor tel: 01273 775533 Email: kwhite@mayowynne baxter.co.uk

ROTTINGDEAN WhITEWAY CENTRE Are you sitting comfortably? The Big Lottery Fund (BIG) has once again acknowledged the Whiteway Centre’s value to the community by generously granting funds for the purchase of 95 top-of-the-range chairs. Since the 1970s, when the Centre was founded, visitors have been obliged to perch on hard moulded plastic seats – but no longer! From this week, students, group members and visitors are able to luxuriate in padded comfort, thanks to BIG! This is the second grant made to the Centre. In 2011 BIG funded the purchase of laptops and other IT equipment to enable the creation of a now-flourishing Computer Club. Wholly self-funding, Rottingdean Whiteway Centre relies on voluntary helpers to manage the variety of learning and leisure activities which are on offer there, not only to Rottingdean but also to the wider community.
The Big Lottery Fund is the largest distributor of National Lottery good-cause funding across the UK. The Fund aims to enable others to make real improvements to communities and the lives of people most in need. Full details of the Whiteway Centre’s Spring/Summer courses can be found in their new prospectus, or at www.rwc.org.uk.

We’re close to the centre of town but, being tucked away off Crouch Gardens, are still unknown to many in the community both young and old. Come and find us and see what we have to offer both to young people and to the wider community. Give us your ideas and help us to help you. At present, as well as all our youth activities, we are pleased to host Seaford Youth Forum, the Down’s Syndrome Support Group, Line Dancing, Zumba and several others and in future issues we’ll give you a flavour of what’s going on. Roger Daw, Chair.

FAMILY SUPPORT WORk ChARITY hELPS FAMILIES BY GIVING BOOkS ANOThER ChANCE
if being Sad Feels lonely
The 29th December will see FSW Family Support Work open up ‘Wise Books’ a secondhand bookshop in Seaford, East Sussex. Unlike the regular charity shops you might find on the high street, FSW’s will be specifically designed to cater for book lovers. “Having built up a reputation for selling books with our big annual book sale fundraiser, it seemed a natural move to open up a book shop,” said Maggie Simons, director of the charity. The grand opening of Wise Books is to be held at the premises at 14 Sutton Road, Seaford, at 10am on 29th December with two of FSW’s Patrons: Great British Bake off Star Cathryn Dresser and Children’s Author Giles Paley-Phillips in attendance. FSW has been around for about 100 years helping families throughout Sussex to deal with a vast array of social problems, including, poverty, bereavement, domestic abuse, mental illness and unemployment. A variety of organisations, for example GPs, schools, churches and social services refer clients to FSW for help and then FSW deal with these cases directly. FSW use a highly experienced team of out-reach, social and play workers across Sussex, who work with and along side each of the families. FSW also has a respite centre based in Hurstpierpoint, just nine miles outside Brighton and very close by to Seaford! This enables clients to have a break from their day to day situations, and gives them a chance to bond as a family. FSW also regularly gives out tons of food to clients who can’t afford to feed themselves and their families. Please recycle this magazine when you have finished with it.

WhAT’S ON AT ThE hOP? The Hop Gallery opens its doors in February to welcome the first of many talented artists who will be exhibiting their work throughout 2013. There are some new names as well as some well-known friends, group shows and solo shows, and as in each year, the Hop Gallery will provide something for everyone with over 20 exhibitions to choose from. New names include Susanna Lobb (right whose show launches the 2013 season) with her exhibition “Heaven and Earth”, Neville Symonds, who will not just be showing his paintings and sketches in March, but also a new book of his sketches. Brenda May will be presenting two-and three-dimensional work at the gallery in early April, whilst later that month Jana Nicole uses salvaged material to create images of chickens in her exhibition. Returning artists include Gaylord Meech (whose work was so popular in 2011), Anne Johnson (right - who, since her last Hop Gallery show, has had work in the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition), Rachael Plummer (was at the Hop Gallery in 2010), Nick Orsborn, (who also has work in other shows during the year, and is ever popular), Cecily Tucker (left whose exhibition opened the 2011 season), Eva Clarberg also returns with some stunning new work after her successful 2011 exhibition, and

lastly Tilney Hardiment, who took part in a group show in 2011 and is now having her first solo show at the gallery. We also have a good collection of group shows taking place at the Hop Gallery in 2013 including the welcome return of the Star Group, who are celebrating their 21st Birthday, the Sussex Watercolour Society who will be holding their 36th Annual Show and the Sussex Arts Collective together with Mohamed Hamid Star Brewery Pottery, who will end the year with another spectacular Christmas Show. The Hop Gallery will be holding its first Contemporary Spring Show in March featuring new artists to Hop as well as many artists who visitors love to see including Peter Messer, Jane Wateridge, and many more. Some artists who met at the gallery during the programme launch or Open Exhibition have now collaborated to produce their own shows; these include Irene Marot, Christina Reading, Stephanie Kirk and Val Eritt, whose exhibition “Orders of Change” will be part of the Brighton Festival Fringe at the Hop Gallery. Another group show, this time in June, features work by Sue Barnes, Sheila Marlborough, Kate Penoyre, Angela Perrin and Lesley Robertshaw in “Paint 5”. Another four artists, Margaret Turton, Sonya Tatham, Marty Waite and Chris Byrneham, will be showing their paintings, sculpture and jewellery in July, and then in October, another well known artist, Meryll Stringell, will be joined by sculptor Pippa Burley for their exhibition “Two Visions”. We have a short retrospective exhibition in February which will feature the work of childrens’ book illustrator Anne Cathcart, who sadly died in 2011. Profits from her cards and etchings will be donated to the St. Wilfrid’s Hospice. So all in all, a very full programme of events for 2013, and we hope you will be able to come along to the Hop Gallery to visit them. hop Gallery Star Brewery, Castle Ditch Lane, Lewes, East Sussex BN7 1YJ . Marmalade and Chocolate Shortbread January is the season for blood oranges. This recipe was a favourite childhood tea-time treat, made with our Gran’s special home-made marmalade. If you make your own marmalade then you’re good to go: if not buy the best-quality marmalade you can. Makes 24. Preparation time: twenty minutes plus 30 minutes chilling time. Cooking time: 40-45 minutes Ingredients 300g plain flour 50g finely ground rolled oats 250g unsalted butter (slightly softened and chopped into cubes) ½-1 tsp salt. 110g caster sugar Zest of an orange 115g good -uality orange marmalade 100g good-quality dark chocolate, roughly chopped Method Grease an 18cm x 28cm rectangular baking tin (nonstick is best). Mix the flour, rolled oats and salt together.
84
You can process them if you want a really fine mix or if you only have normal oats. Beat the butter, sugar and orange zest together until light and fluffy. Gradually beat in the flour until the shortbread mixture sticks together in small clumps. Press a little more than half the mixture into the greased tin. Level and smooth the top. Spread this base with the marmalade and sprinkle the roughly chopped dark chocolate over the top. Crumble over the remaining shortbread mixture then refrigerate for 30 minutes. Preheat the oven to 150C / Gas Mark 2. Bake shortbread for 40-45 minutes until golden brown. Allow to cool in the pan and cut into 24 before it cools completely. Notes: Milk chocolate can be used instead of dark. The resulting shortbread will be sweeter. Lime marmalade can be substituted with equally delicious results. The shortbread will keep in an airtight container for up to three days.

LIkE ChILDREN IN A SWEET ShOP... ... It may be winter but the blackboard bearing the jobs list at Seaford Exchange Garden in the Crouch Gardens just seems to get longer: deadhead anemones, repot pot-bound plants, mend the poly-tunnel roof, cut back helichrysums and geraniums, plan the veg beds for 2013, repair guttering... and that’s just the start. But all work stopped when Veronica and Diana returned from a trip to Newhaven saying that they felt just like children in a sweet shop. Why were we goggling? Because B&Q’s Angela had donated a selection of end-of-season plants for our garden that included some choice strawberry plants which will be added to our soft fruit offerings next summer.
compost, thank you so much to all of you who continue to bring in your veg peelings. Mike looks after three rotating bins that provide a good proportion of our compost needs, but the more we plant the more we need, so bring it on! We are planning a very colourful spring and summer and have already placed a new seed order for flowers and veg to be planted in the new year, and we are hoping to have a profusion of herbs to scent the garden and, of course, to sell on Wednesday mornings. We look forward to welcoming even more of you in 2013, and should still have plenty of potted bulbs to tempt you, but in the meantime we all wish you a very happy gardening new year. The Gardening Team
We are also very grateful to the Lions Club which is giving us a tool shed, and to Heather who donated a very active worm composter. And talking of

NEW YEAR’S DAY – A SIGN OF ThE TIMES By Alan Morton Kerry sat buried in the corner of the lounge settee. She was nine years old and she knew nothing of the psychological state she was in, or why she felt so confused and miserable. She had been suffering with a slight stomach ache and this had compounded her gloomy demeanour, but the fact that she was sitting alone in an empty room was of her own choice. Her dad had been enthusiastic about their time together over the New Year, and how they were going to visit his parents, her grandparents, but things had not worked out as planned. He had received a phone call from his current girl-friend about some emergency or other, and had been a called away with a promise of it only being for a couple of hours; later on we may go out and get a burger; how does that sound? Kerry looked at the mobile phone she constantly caressed and checked for text messages, but it was New Year and things had been quiet today. She thought of her friends with their families and enjoying themselves, so she decided to phone her mum and tell her of her woes. One tap on the short-dial key, three rings of the phone and she was connected to her mother. Kerry told her mother of how she wasn’t feeling well and that she felt neglected as Dad had gone off and wouldn’t be back until later on. Kerry’s mother promised to sort things out and this took the form of her using one of her own short-dial codes once she had finished the call to her daughter.
some consideration for your own family rather than somebody else’s!” “Hello, hello”, said Wayne, but Dawn had ended the call. Wayne pressed one of his own short-dial codes before the phone at the other end was answered after a long delay. “Hello, Dad?” “Oh, hello son… sorry about that… couldn’t find the blessed thing; heard it ringing but it was buried under your Mum’s knitting. You’re missing the party. Flo and Dan are here and your auntie Emilie, and Jim, Jenny and the kids.” “Sorry, Dad. I’ll be along as soon as I can. I’ve just had a call from Dawn. Apparently Kerry rang her and said she isn’t feeling well. I’m tied up for a bit, could you sort it out?” “No problems son, leave it to me.” Wayne’s father ended the call, looked at his wife and puffed his cheeks out in exasperation. He opened the door that lead from the dining room into the lounge and looked at Kerry slouched on the settee. “Now what’s all this all about you not feeling well… you could have told your nan you know. Now why don’t you come into the other room with the rest of us and join in the fun?” Alan Morton - Author of the Beatles Generation www.the beatlesgeneration.com

“Hello, Dawn, what’s up now?” “Don’t you what’s up now me, Wayne. I’ve just had a call from Kerry and she is not feeling well, not well at all. This is supposed to be your long-weekend together; where the hell are you?” There was a long silence before Wayne answered. “Look, I had to drive over to see Karen. Her son’s playing up.” “Her son? What about our daughter?” “OK, OK, I will fix it. I will be back there in a couple of hours. I’ll take her out for something to eat.” “Well, she may not feel up to it if she’s not well. SEAFORD’S FAMOUS RESIDENTS RIChARD MALLET This is Richard Mallet, who was a Seafordian of great renown. On several occasions whilst in the Royal Navy he had occasion to jump into the sea to rescue men who had fallen overboard. When he settled down in Seaford his life was no less exciting. On 16th December 1869 he dived into Seaford Bay to rescue the crew of a French ship The Seraphine, which had floundered in stormy seas. The people of Seaford were proud of their local hero and started to raise money for him. He was presented with an inscribed watch and a gold medal by the French Government. Mallet Close, off The Causeway, was named in his honour in 1987. By Kevin Gordon
