Running Commentary... In Sussex there is a full calendar of races for runners to choose from nowadays, offering distances from sprints to ultra-marathons, on-road and off-road races, multidiscipline events and muddy cross-country challenges. There is also an equally diverse range of entry fees, which for most runners is an important consideration in the selection process, especially if you want to race throughout the year. So what should a runner take into account when choosing an event, apart from the actual length of the race? The distance to travel to the event can be an issue although 2 or 3 runners sharing a car can keep petrol costs down. Does the race offer value for money? Is it a flat or hilly course? If it is held by a running club it is probably well-organised, as runners generally know what runners need in a race. A few years ago I wanted to do a spring marathon in Sussex and there were two particular ones I had in mind. One cost £12 to enter while the other was £48. I opted for the lower-priced marathon and it proved to be brilliantly organised, very challenging and had the most scenic of courses. Can a race organiser justify charging high entry fees or is there a touch of greed creeping into some events? Obviously, race income needs to cover such things as road closures, policing, medals, trophies, hire of portable toilets, posts, marker tape, etc as well as race insurance and a race licence. Once overheads have been covered and a small sum for the organising body built in to the cost, any additional profits are usually given to local charities. This format has been used successfully for quite a few decades and it is only a small minority of events that now see runners as just a cash cow to be milked for all they can get. As a result, there is a groundswell of runners who are voting with their feet and avoiding such races. However, it must be said that the ‘big picture’ of the running scene in Sussex and nationwide is one of a vibrant, expanding and exciting arena. If you have never entered a ‘competitive’ race before, I do recommend it highly. You will find a good blend of competitiveness and friendliness, where enjoyment, camaraderie and the feel-good factor is experienced by beginners and

Seaford man, 83, wins gold in 2012 rowing championship At the age of 83, many would think that Weston Towler should be slowing down. But he has no intention of putting his feet up or taking it easy. Mr Towler, from Seaford, is the proud owner of his second gold medal from the British Indoor Rowing Championships (BIRC), held in Nottingham. Weston was this year’s oldest, and one of the most dedicated, competitors at BIRC 2012 and he competed against four other competitors in the Men’s 80-84 Lwt category. He rowed 2,000 metres in eight minutes and 46.2 seconds. Mr Towler, took up indoor rowing at the Downs Leisure Centre when he retired 22 years ago, and trains three times a week. He has now competed in the championships 17 times and won five medals. This year Weston has also been inducted into the BIRC Hall of Fame.

When asked what Weston hopes to achieve this year, he said: “I just want to do as well as I possibly can and come away being satisfied with my performance. Rowing is addictive and I definitely have a competitive streak in me. Indoor rowing exercises the whole body and helps the lungs work. It’s a great activity to help to me keep fit. My incentive is to keep pushing myself and to try and retain some of my past performance times.” Stewart Angell, Health & Fitness Manager for Wave Leisure, said: “Weston is an inspiration to us all. We see him here every week without fail, and his dedication to keeping himself active is admired by all our members and staff.”

SEAFORD BOWLING CLUB FOUNDED 1912 The weather was very kind to the members of Seaford Bowling Club, who celebrated the start of their Centenary year on Saturday 21st April 2112. The Mayor of Seaford, the Worshipful Linda Wallraven, and her Consort Liz Holland attended the event. The Mayor raised the new Centenary club flag (left) aided by the club Chairman Arthur Feist, followed by the unveiling of a wall montage, outlining the last 100 years, with photos, in the club house. There followed the club opening drive, which was played in the afternoon sunshine with a finger buffet to finish the day.

On 4th May Seaford Ladies met the Crouch Ladies. As usual it was a hotly contested game and the Crouch Ladies won by 9 points. Ron Hemmings, the President of the Crouch Bowling Club, came to the match and presented Seaford with a very attractive statue to commemorate the club’s Centenary year. We were delighted with the present and it will take pride of place at the club. It is credit to Seaford that the town has two successful Bowls clubs. Organic Facials & Treatments at Haven Therapies Haven Therapies in Seaford has welcomed experienced beauty therapist Hayley Walsh to the team. Hayley is a specialist in skin-care treatments having trained at Lewes College and since then has worked at Court House Clinic in Haywards Heath for four years and has run her own beauty business. Hayley specialises in glycolic peels, microdermabrasion and hair removal as well as facials, manicures and pedicures for men and women. She is also qualified as a Medical Aesthetician and has worked alongside doctors and surgeons performing cosmetic surgery. Last month, Hayley invited me to Haven Therapies to experience one of her specialist skin-care treatments along with a Neal’s Yard facial - a well deserved pamper I thought. Not knowing a lot about glycolic peels and dermabrasion (only that it sounds quite scary!) I was interested to find out more and hopefully find myself looking 10 years younger! I met Hayley at the clinic where she made me feel most welcome. She explained the differences between each treatment; a glycolic peel is a mild acid, derived from sugar cane, which is painted onto the skin. It is used to treat active acne, repair broken capillaries, rosacea, and reduce skin pigmentations caused by sun damage. This treatment also increases blood flow, which produces a healthy glow, to the skin. Microdermabrasion, on the other hand, is the gentle exfoliation of the skin using an electric exfoliator made up of tiny diamond chips which remove the outer layer of dead skin. It’s a noninvasive procedure and not at all painful as I found out when Hayley decided to carry out this treatment on me (she was unable to give me a glycolic peel as pre-treatment skin preparation is necessary). The purpose of dermabrasion is to smooth the skin and help reduce fine wrinkles and scarring that can be caused by acne, for example. An initial consultation and the first treatment is followed by sessions at various intervals in order for the treatment to be successful. Hayley has had many happy clients who are delighted with the results after their course of treatments. They continue to see her for treatments and particularly enjoy the added luxury facial that she gives as part of the skin treatment package. My treatment began with a Neal’s Yard power berry facial wash - for younger-looking skin! Hayley explained that she likes to use the Neal’s Yard range of products because they are a highly ethical company, using natural

18

wild and organic ingredients, many of which have Soil Association certification. My cleanse was followed by the microdermabrasion treatment, which took about 15 minutes. Hayley suggested I touched my face to feel the difference. Wow! My skin felt so much smoother. Hayley then continued with the Neal’s Yard facial that she feels is important to include as it helps to calm the skin down after any of the specialist treatments. The next stage was a face massage with ginger and juniper oil and then she applied a frankincense firming mask, both of which smelt wonderful, followed by a power berry moisturiser and finally an MD Formulations sun protector - essential if having any of these specialist treatments. By the end my face felt so smooth, clean, fresh and very well hydrated. Did I look 10 years younger - well I certainly felt like it! I thoroughly enjoyed the treatment and facial that Hayley gave me. She was very knowledgeable regarding skin care and the Neal’s Yard products and it was clear she was very passionate about her work and the ethics of using natural products. I particularly admired her enthusiasm and her gentle, caring and cheerful nature which, on a rainy day in April was most welcome.

SAINT GEORGE’S DAY CELEBRATED IN GRAND STYLE Monday 23rd April this year, England’s National Day, St George’s Day, was celebrated by the Seahaven Branch of ‘The Royal Society of St George’ with a special service at St Andrew’s Church, Alfriston conducted by the Branch Chaplain, Revd David Farrant. This was followed by a formal dinner at Dean’s Place Hotel. There was considerable support from our civic dignitaries, headed by Mr Peter Field, Lord Lieutenant for East Sussex with the new High Sheriff, Mr David Allam, as well as Mrs Eileen Russell Chair of Lewes District Council and the mayors of four of the five towns in Lewes District, Seaford, Newhaven, Peacehaven and Telscombe. The Mayor of Lewes was the only one missing because of council business, but he was able to send his greetings. In replying to the chairman’s address of welcome, the Lord Lieutenant told the assembly about the county wide arrangements for HM The Queen’s Jubilee. Branch

President, Don Mabey, praised the Dean’s Place Hotel staff for producing a first class meal with the very best of service.

Each lady present received a gift of a Red Rose for England, supplied by Bishopstone Nurseries of Seaford. The raffle raised over £180 for the branch’s funds, and this money will be used to buy gifts to help local worthwhile causes. Also the chairman, Bob Peedle MBE and his wife Maureen, put a special limited print of a painting by internationally renowned Alfriston artist, the late Frank Wootton, OBE up for a blind auction. This raised over £120, which is being donated by the branch to the Sue Godfrey Fund to help her nephew, Corporal Ben Stoten from Denton. Ben is currently in hospital in Birmingham following serious injury, losing both legs, whilst on operations in Afghanistan serving with our local Regiment, The Princess of Wales’s Royal Regiment. Ben, a local man, was at school in Newhaven and went to Tideways School. Friends, relatives and many local groups are raising money to help with his rehabilitation. One of the aims of ‘The Royal Society of St George’ is to encourage St George’s Day to be celebrated as England’s National Day when we all want to fly the flag and enjoy this special day. Chairman Bob Peedle said “This year’s St George’s day, for us, was one of the best, and with more people joining the society every month, next year’s can only be even better. This year we received reassurance from all the councils in our area that England’s flag will be flown on the day, and that is a step in the right direction.” Branch President Don Mabey shares a joke with the Lord Lieutenant for East Sussex, Peter Field, whilst guests were assembling at Dean’s Place Hotel for the formal dinner on St George’s Day.

Royal Seaford The first monarch to visit Seaford was probably Alfred (he of the burnt cakes). He was crowned on 23rd April 871 and a few years later in 884 he stayed and held Court at West Dean. In the ‘Proverbs of King Alfred’, a book of poems about the King written in medieval times, Seaford is mentioned in the very first verse. Many years later King John took the throne (much to the annoyance of Robin Hood) on 6th April 1199 and later that same year he visited the port of Seaford, which was at that time the largest in Sussex. John was not a popular King and on 15th June 1215 he was forced to put his seal on the Magna Carta, which took away the absolute power of the monarch. The following year on 23rd May he visited Seaford a second time, staying overnight whilst en-route between Canterbury and Winchester. Above: statue of Alfred the Great in Winchester The first mention of Seaford as a Cinque Port was in 1229. We were one of the Royal Ports which provided the King with men and ships to defend the coast. Although we were once a busy port there was not an official charter until one was signed by Henry VIII in 1543. Ironically by this time the River Ouse had clogged up with shingle and the port had virtually seized up and the maritime industry had moved west to the port of Meeching – later Newhaven. Despite the fact Seaford industry had literally dried up, the town retained its place as a Cinque Port, still returned two MPs to Parliament. The Mayors (called Bailiffs) liked to keep Seaford in the political (and Royal) spotlight and sent a series of ‘Loyal Addresses’ to the monarch. They are comically toadying in their wording. The first I have been able to find, dates from August 1712 and was sent to Queen Anne and starts “Most Dread Sovereign, we the members of the ancient and faithful corporation of Seaford are sensible of the blessings which your subjects have enjoyed under your auspicious reign and we acknowledge the divine goodness of you, our sovereign – please permit us to approach your Royal Throne to express our gratitude….” In July 1727 the Bailiff of Seaford wrote a ‘humble address’ to George II congratulating him on his accession to the throne and saying that the “obedient and willing” Seaford people’s hearts were filled with “joy and satisfaction”. North of the border Bonnie Prince Charlie, supported by the French, was

22

not so pleased and had designs in the English throne. When the Scottish pretender was overthrown the Seaford Bailiff took up his pen to draft another fawning address. On 15th May 1800 a madman called James Hadfield tried to assassinate George III whilst he was watching a play at a Drury Lane Theatre. He was unharmed and unperturbed (in fact he fell asleep a short time later!) but Seaford was outraged. Seaford Bailiff, Thomas Chambers wrote to the King on behalf of Seafordians about their “most detested abhorrence” to hear about the “most atrocious and horrid design against his Majesty’s most sacred person and dignity” Of course, our longest reigning monarch, Queen Victoria ascended to the throne in 1837 and in 1887 the people of Seaford wished to celebrate her jubilee. The people of the town clubbed together and purchased a pink marble water fountain surmounted by a gas-lamp. The fountain was placed on a granite block which was once used as the base of a swivel-gun at the nearby Seaford Battery. The fountain (with a water trough below for thirsty dogs) was placed in a prominent place in the centre of the road outside the Wellington Pub and was inscribed “Erected by public subscription to commemorate the completion of Fifty Years of the Reign of our most Gracious Majesty, Queen Victoria.” This lamp was later moved to the Salts recreation ground but now stands in the triangle of land where South Street joins Steyne Road. On the death of Queen Victoria in 1901, Edward VII became our king and the accession was announced from the balcony above the council offices which had by them moved from the Town Hall to Clinton Place. Three years later Princess Alice, a grand-daughter of Queen Victoria, visited Seaford for a day by train. She attended Seaford College, where she witnessed a sports day and left later in the day by train. Her sister Princess Victoria visited Seaford in 1905 when she visited the Duke and Duchess of Sparta (later King Constantine I and Queen Sophie of Greece.) It was a glorious sunny day and the royal party played on the beach in front of the hotel. The prince even took some photos of Seaford beach, which are now in the Royal Collection. In July 1907 we had another royal visitor, this time none other than the King Himself, Edward VII. He was staying in Compton Place, Eastbourne and came over to Seaford by motor-car. A large crowd gathered in front of the Esplanade Hotel where he visited for lunch. Above: Edward VII 1841 - 1910. Photos opposite of Seaford, courtesy of Seaford Museum.

The coronation of George V in 1911 was celebrated with fervour in Seaford and two ‘triumphal arches’ were erected over Clinton Place. There was a parade headed by the band of the Seaford Boy Scouts. Decorated floats followed including one of Mr Simmons wagons containing the Church Street school’s May Queen. Another float, pulled by a donkey, looks as if it contained members of Seaford Bonfire Society. Soldiers and nurses marched in the parade, which passed under two of the fire brigade’s escape ladders pulled together to form an arch and decorated by huge flags. King George visited Seaford in March 1935 with his wife Queen Mary. They were visiting one of their god-sons, Peter Beck, who was a teacher at King’s Mead School. They signed the school visitors book, which is now in the possession of Seaford Museum. This was actually the year that the king and queen had their Silver Jubilee and Seaford was proud that they had visited the town. The council arranged many events across the town during Jubilee Week with sporting and church events, dinners and parades. A United Thanksgiving Church Service was attended by hundreds of people on the land shortly to be used for the Ritz Cinema (now the site of Morrison’s) and there was community singing in the Salts. On the evening of 6th May there was a torchlit procession up to Seaford Head where a massive bonfire beacon had been built. The was also a procession of vehicles bedecked in bunting and flags. When George V died in 1936 everyone wanted Edward VIII to become the King. Seaford telephone exchange was built this year in East Street and the monogram of the King was duly placed above the door. As you are aware however, Edward abdicated before his coronation, therefore Seaford is left with a rare piece of civic architectural decoration. George VI was crowned in 1937 and Seaford was bedecked in red, white and blue. Clinton Place, Broad Street and the High Street were a riot of colour with flags and bunting stretched across the street. Once again the council put on a variety of sporting and civic events (this time the community singing was around the bonfire on Seaford Head). The

ceremonies in London were broadcast at the newly built Ritz cinema which, was open free to the public. In the afternoon there was a tea party for children aged between 4 and 15 and each of them was presented with a Coronation mug. There was a posh meal at the Esplanade Hotel, where the guest of honour was the Lord Bishop of London, who was the patron of the Chailey Heritage Marine Hospital at Tide Mills. Southdown Lamb was on the menu as well as salmon cooked in squirrel sauce – the mind boggles! It is interesting to see the names of the people on the Jubilee Committee – over 90 people in all. The coronation had been broadcast to the Ritz Cinema but for the coronation of our current queen in 1953 television was the technology of the day! This time the actual coronation was beamed live from Westminster Abbey. Televisions were installed at five locations around Seaford including the County Secondary School in Arundel Road and the Warwick Rooms (above the old library). Again access was free to the public. The local ironmongers, Berry Brothers in Crouch Lane, donated a wrought-iron gate to the people of Seaford and this was installed in the Elizabethan gateway between East Street and the Crouch Gardens. The initials ‘EIIR’ and ‘1953’ were picked out in gold paint. Her Majesty celebrated her Silver Jubilee in 1977 and again there was a series of sporting events, including a fishing competition on the beach. There was a spectacular event on the Salts which included sky-divers, a hot-air balloon and even the Dagenham Girl Pipers. Several bands, including the Seaford Silver Band, provided musical accompaniment. Interestingly this event was arranged not by the council but by the Seaford Rotary Club - there were still however some echoes of the past in the shape of community singing and a huge bonfire. Her Majesty’s Golden Jubilee was a more muted affair with a small garden being established on the junction of Steyne Road and South Street. The old drinking fountain erected to celebrate 50 years of Queen Victoria’s reign was transformed into a sundial.

Over the years attitudes to the royal family have changed considerably but Seaford is still keen to celebrate Her Majesty’s Diamond Jubilee. Although there are no plans for community singing, Seaford school children will receive commemorative mugs, there will be a parade and of course a bonfire! After the cheque presentation, the Chairman of WAVES, Richard Plowman, spoke briefly on the work of the charity, which has over 30 volunteers and two family workers. WAVES FSS provides practical help in reducing stress at an early stage in family difficulties, which could help prevent disruption of the family unit. They also provide workshops on parenting, divorce recovery and an oversubscribed listening service in local schools. They have a drop-in centre at 8 Church Street, Seaford, open from 9.30-12.30, Monday to Thursdays, and welcome interest from new volunteers. Richard thanked the Mayor and her supporters for all the fundraising and publicity that the Service had received during her mayoral year, including Councillor Adrian Campbell who ran the Berlin Marathon and raised hundreds of pounds, Geoff Stonebanks of the Driftwood Garden who raised over £600 and every organisation and individual who took part in the community Mad March Marathon – twenty-five events, including sponsored hops, charity football matches, music and dance recitals and much more, which raised well over three thousand pounds of the total amount. The Mayor thanked Richard and the team of volunteers at WAVES for their support for the Seaford community and presented them with a Community Service Award to recognise their hard work supporting local families. Tailors skillful enough to make this historic costume are hard to find. The RoyalWarranted Tailor Geoffrey Golding, who provides uniforms for some members of the Royal Family and the Royal Household came up with the best quote. After five trips to his workshop in Hertfordshire, Seaford’s loudest citizen is now suitably robed for the Diamond Jubilee, as befits the dignity of the town.

The uniform is faithfully based on that of William Woolgar, the Town Sergeant between 1866 and 1901, which was worn to Court to meet Queen Victoria. William’s brother Richard was Town Crier at the time, but his exact uniform design is unknown. William’s grave is by the porch of St. Leonard’s Church, where one of his descendents, Tony Willer, has been photographing Peter in his splendid re-creation. None of the large sum to pay for the gold-ribboned and brass-buttoned cape, coat and breeches had to be met from Town Council funds. Voluntary groups in the town gave donations of up to £250 each, and smaller groups held collections. A number of generous individuals also gave sums of up to £100. In addition Peter performed Town Crying work for Councils in Eastbourne, Crowborough and Hastings to raise more for the cause. Said smiling Crier Peter: “The last uniform, made by the

I hope the new kit, crisply tailored as you expect from a military outfitter, will last as long as I want to hold the job. Or as long as Seaford can put up with having a Town Crier.” Seaford’s Crier takes part in competitions across the South, and reached 3rd place in the 2010 National Championships. He is keen to promote Seaford as a shopping centre and place to visit, and to advertise local voluntary and fund-raising events. He has also worked with the Mayor, local schools, festivals, and on radio and TV, and even led a bride to the altar. Seaford Gardening Club Well, as I write this article the cold wind has dropped and we are promised warmer days by the forecasters – let’s hope they are right so that we can get our bedding plants in without fear of frost. Summer should be round the corner, somewhere!! The speaker booked for our May meeting was unable to come due to loss of her voice and a heavy cold. Clifford Dargonne very kindly agreed to attend in her place and gave us an interesting talk on Indonesia. He is a very keen mountaineer and was determined to complete the ‘7 Summits Marathon’. His first ascents were Kilimanjaro and Everest. Once bitten by the climbing bug, he quickly attempted other peaks, including his final climb ‘Carstanz Pyramid’, his subject at our meeting. On his way to attempt the challenge he and the team visited the island of Bali with its many temples and cultures. There is also a huge area given over to rice fields with dykes built for watering (no hosepipe bans there!). They had to wear sarongs over their shorts to enter the sacred areas – quite a sight to behold with heavy climbing boots etc – most fashionable! Some of the shrines they visited were very elaborately decorated. Temple guides would greet them to show them around with umbrellas when it rained, and sarongs to cover their legs – all for a small fee, of course. A special permit was required before the climb to gain access to the gold and copper mine located half-way up the mountain. Tribal villages with wooden houses on stilts on the edge of the river were of great interest plus the trading markets where locals could earn some sort of living. The actual climb area was reached by a 2 x 2 rotor-bladed helicopter – the blades rotated in opposite directions to give it lift! Clifford explained that the actual climb was more like a scramble but his lovely slides showed us just what a dangerous adventure it had been. Once at the summit they used satellite phones to call home to say ‘we have made it to the top’! This was the third time Clifford has spoken to us and it will not be the last, as he always keeps his audience enthralled with his exploits.

Our next social evening will be on Wednesday 27th June at 7.30pm at Cross Way church, Steyne Road, Seaford (opposite the Wellington Pub). We hope to return to our normal venue (Clinton Centre) in September. Mr Christopher Horlock will give us a talk entitled ‘Sussex Scrapbook’. Please come along to join us on our last social evening of the season – you will be made most welcome as a visitor or you can join as a member. Another essential item is the water butt. Save as much rainwater as you can. Perhaps invest in a larger water butt? Connect this to an overflow butt if possible. Otherwise find space for a large black plastic dustbin and transfer water from your rain butts into this, leaving room in the rain butts to refill!

CARNATIONS & PINKS

Perennial carnations that have been over-wintered in the greenhouse or young carnations grown from seed can now be hardened off and planted outside. Water them in well and weed regularly. Now is also a good time to take cuttings from established plants. For both carnations and pinks select young healthy side shoots with four or five pairs of leaves. Remove the lower pairs of leaves and carefully cut below a node using a sharp knife. Insert several of these cuttings into a pot filled

with gritty compost. Place into a propagator or cover with a plastic bag. Transplant these cuttings into two-inch pots when large enough to handle. If you want larger blooms on established carnations now is the time to start disbudding. Keep the crown and end buds at the top of the main stem but remove all other side buds. Encourage modern pinks by pinching out the growing point on the main stems. Keep all plants well watered. Continue to disbud and deadhead into next month.

a few minutes use a trowel and dig a test hole near the watered plant to see just how far down the water has penetrated. You should be aiming to get water at least three or more inches below soil level. Finally, cover with a three-inch deep layer of mulch. Leave a small circle clear around the stem and extend to between six to sixteen inches. Sprinkle some slug pellets if you use them. Use this system for young fruit trees, fruit bushes, roses, shrubs and perennial plants. Most vegetables should be OK but do earth up potatoes and cover the necks of carrots.

ow do we live with a hosepipe ban that will probably last all year? The answer is to save as much water as you can then use what you have wisely. The end of May and early June is a good time to “mulch” but first prepare the ground to be able to retain all the water you put into it. Organic humus, compost, manure or grass cuttings are all excellent insulators to prevent the loss of moisture from the ground. The following routine should be used. Weed, water and mulch. Firstly remove all perennial weeds, add whatever fertilizer you prefer and fluff up the soil around the plant. Then water thoroughly with a long spout water can. Water directly to the ground under the plant. Do not use a rose on the end of the water can to sprinkle over the plant, as most of this will just evaporate. After

plants and baskets need water Give them a good soak with a watering can. Give a light liquid feed if required. 3 Thin hardy annuals and vegetables sown in open ground. Remove all weeds as you do this. Then water if dry. 3 Check your Sweet Peas and Roses daily to prepare them for our Summer Show on 16th June. 3 Put nets or cages over fruit crops to protect from birds. 3 Greenfly, whitefly, blackfly and red spider mite can now get really troublesome. Check plants regularly and be prepared in advance to take action.

Driftwood Open Garden

Driftwood Garden in Bishopstone opens its gates to visitors again this month! Over the last three years it has raised over £7000 for a variety of charities, both local and national. New for 2012, Geoff Stonebanks has lovingly created a beach garden, complete with dinghy, groynes and fish crates that were used by his father and grandfather in the late 1950s on the dock in Fletwood, Lancashire. This has completely replaced the front lawn and visitors can now sit on tables and chairs on the beach and sample the infamous cup cakes, over looking the sea. There will be tea, coffee and homemade cakes and savoury items available at all openings this summer, along with a photographic and art exhibition by Mark Glassman and metal sculptures by local Lewes-based

Green Waste Recycling Service

artist, Serena Thirkell. Geoff has also created a range of vintage china cups and saucers as garden decorations which will be for sale, some made especially for the Jubilee from 1953 coronation year china. The first event is for St Wilfrid’s Hospice on Sunday 17th June, 11am to 5pm, as part of their series of Secret Gardens, swiftly followed by the first of 4 openings for the National Gardens Scheme, all 11am to 5pm, Tuesday 19th June, 1st July, 22nd July and 12th August.

Following on from the success of the Mayor’s Open Garden Event last year, both Pomegranate and Ollivers have kindly sponsored a Mayor’s Open Garden Trail on Sunday 8th July, 1pm to 6pm, to be opened by Norman Baker MP. Driftwood and a number of other gardens will open to raise money for the Mayor’s nominated charity; watch out for the July issue or visit www.geoffstonebanks.co.uk for full details. Some of the gardens have never opened to the public before. Then on August 5th there will be a Coastal Garden Trail for Macmillan Cancer Support, proudly sponsored by Paradise Park, with 8 gardens open between Saltdean and Seaford between 12 and 6pm, raising money for the new cancer centre in Brighton. Once again, full details on website above with information available nearer the time in the Tourist Information office and all Tates Garden Centres.

All monies raised at these events, from entry fees, proceeds from catering to donations and commission, will go to the charity for that day. Yorkshire Tea have very kindly donated all the tea for garden openings this year. Please recycle this magazine when you have finished with it.

TREE WARDEN SCHEME THE TREE COUNCIL

SEAFORD: TREES FOR ALL (IN TIME!) Planting trees is very satisfying, but the real secret is to keep them watered for the first two or three summers. So Seaford Tree Group cancelled with regret its spring planting this year because of the forecast dry summer (cue sceptical noises off)! This autumn, the Tree Council’s Diamond Jubilee Big Tree Plant is on again. If you would like to sponsor (and water!) a tree in the verge in front of your house, we will add you to our list for the Highway engineers to check and approve. Our other big ask at the moment is for people with a bit of garden space to adopt and nurture some “whips”, which the government says we should use for economy, for a couple of years until they grow big enough (6ft or 2m) to use for street planting - which we would then take care of. Trees take time, but they are a huge asset to a town, increasing local property values and giving a real sense of well-being to a place. There is no magic about creating a leafy town - the whole community has to help its young people to value and protect growing things. Seaford used to have plenty of trees, and we hope will again.

Seaford in Bloom Thanks to the money raised with the help of our loyal supporters and sponsors, Seaford is now bursting out of the gloom and into the bloom with the planting up of all the floral containers in the town, which this year have a red, white and blue theme in celebration of the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee.

The SIB Committee would like to thank Paul Franklin and the House Clearance Company for once again sponsoring the Floral Boat situated on the A259 near Seaford Railway Station. The containers in the town are all watered from supplies drawn from private reservoirs belonging to our maintenance contractors, so the hosepipe ban shouldn’t have a detrimental effect on the quality of this year’s floral displays in Seaford. The 2012 Seaford in Bloom Floral Competition will be judged on Tuesday 10th July and our main fundraising event - the Seaford in Bloom Open Gardens Day - sponsored by Rowland Gorringe Estate Agents - will be held on Sunday 15th July between 1pm and 6pm. Details of both of these events, including a downloadable entry form for the competition, are available on our website www.seaford-sussex.co.uk/sib Closing date for competition entries is 3rd July. Information leaflets and competition entry forms are also available at the Tourist Information Centre in Church Street and at Rowland Gorringe Estate Agents in Station Approach. We hope that everyone will enjoy the town’s floral displays during this special year and once again, many thanks to all who have helped to raise the funds that make this possible. “We really wanted to put on a benefit concert to support a local charity and FSW were the perfect fit” said Archway Co-ordinator Jane Reeves, “The work they are doing is so important and affects so may people, especially in the current economic climate”. The evening was made up of performances from choirs in three different genres, gospelish, Contemporary and Glee, and was attended by over 200 people. Maggie Simons, the director of FSW, was delighted by the turnout “We have to say a big thank you to Jane Reeves and The Archway Choirs for putting on this fantastic event for us - it was humbling to see so many people turn out, and the money raised will benefit so many Sussex families”. The evening concluded with a rabble- rousing version of ‘O’Fortuna’ by Carmina Burana and the presentation of £900 for FSW Family Support Work raised from ticket sales. FSW has been around for about 100 years, helping families throughout Sussex to deal with a vast array of social problems, including, poverty, bereavement, domestic abuse, mental illness and unemployment. A variety of sources from GPs, schools, churches and social services refer clients to FSW for help and they deal with these cases directly, with a highly experienced team of

outreach social and playworkers across Sussex to work with and along side each of the families. FSW also has a respite centre based in Hurstpierpoint, just nine miles outside Brighton and very close by to your location, which allows clients to have a break from their day-to-day situations, and gives them a chance to bond as a family. The Archway was set up by Jane Reeves, a performer and a business woman, to provide people with an easy-access feel-good centre for recreational learning, through such things as music. The Short Seaford Not many Seafordians know this, but our town once had a huge warplane named after it. It was in the 1940s; the war in Europe was still raging but the end was in sight, and the RAF and Ministry planners were turning their attention to the Far East where the conflict with Japan was expected to continue for a long time ahead. Many of the RAF’s famous wartime aircraft types were beginning to show their age, and were not particularly suited to the demands of the Pacific war so new specifications were issued for updated versions which were redesigned for the expected battles to come. Thus, the famous Lancaster bomber became the Lincoln, the Spitfire became the Spiteful and the Sunderland flying boat became the Seaford. All these aircraft were built at least in small numbers but they never saw operational service because the Japanese surrendered unexpectedly following the use of the atomic bomb in 1945. The Seaford and the Sunderland were designed and built by Short Brothers of Rochester and Belfast. The Sunderland was derived from the pre-war Empire flying boat, a big four-engined airliner which provided passenger and mail service to the far corners of the Commonwealth in the late 1930s. When the war threatened it was redesigned with gun turrets and bomb racks and became the Sunderland, a mainstay of RAF Coastal Command throughout WW2. The Short Sunderland was the scourge of enemy U-boats in the battle of the Atlantic, but it was to need longer range and more powerful engines for service in the Pacific. When all the improvements had been incorporated it was virtually a new design so a decision was made to rename it, and the new name chosen was the Short Seaford. Why was it named the Seaford? We can only speculate. Were there Sunderlands in Newhaven and Seaford Bay? Did someone go to prep school here? What we do know is that prototype Seafords were built and flew successfully. An order for thirty aircraft was placed and production had started when the war came to a sudden end. There was no more need for expensive warplanes so what was to be done with the incomplete flying boats?

48

There was one obvious answer; the design had originated as a luxurious civilian airliner and clearly it could be converted to fill that role again. However, the world of commercial aviation had been fundamentally altered during the war years. New airfields had been built all over the world, and they weren’t just fields; they had long, hard runways and in the USA there was a new generation of transport planes to use them. Flying boats had been attractive because they didn’t need runways, but in the post-war world this was less of an advantage. Nevertheless, BOAC, a predecessor of British Airways, looked at the Seaford and decided it could use it on certain routes such as UK - South Africa. Eventually twelve aircraft were completed as 36 seat airliners, but, sadly for Seaford, Sussex BOAC decided to rechristen them and the type became known as the Solent. The ex-Seaford Solents served BOAC well until 1950, but by then they had become uneconomic and the fleet was sold. Some went to lesser airlines, but others found their way to corners of the globe where flying boats were still attractive. In the South Pacific, east Africa and even California they continued to do a useful job for many years and at least one of the breeds found its way back to the UK, where it could be seen at Chatham Dockyard in the 1990s. So the name Seaford never became famous in the annals of the great aircraft types. It’s not too late of course. Perhaps something ultrasonic or intergalactic is too much to hope for, but couldn’t we have a nice peaceful Seaford glider? SEAFORD SCENE’S OBJECT OF THE MONTH Each month the Seaford Scene will identify an object of interest amongst the museum’s vast collection. Look out for the ‘Seaford Scene Object of the Month’ label which identifies it at the museum. 1911 Coronation Bunting In this Jubilee month, Seaford Museum is a great place to visit to see royal memorabilia. You won’t be disappointed as there are several displays including enough commemorative mugs for a garden party. There is a framed piece of the backcloth used in Westminster Abbey for Her Majesty’s Coronation in 1953, royal souvenirs including a Royal Rubic’s Cube and a Coronation shaving mug. This colourful piece of bunting was used at Church Street School to celebrate the coronation of the Queen’s grandparents, George V and Queen Mary, in 1911. You can see it at the Museum in the School Display.

Living at Cuckmere Haven

Part 10

All this rain! Seems as soon as a drought was forecast and a hosepipe ban announced, Mother Nature took things into her own hands. Although Cuckmere is so beautiful on a sunny day, I can’t say I really mind the rain. Everything springs up so lush and verdant after a downpour and I love the smell of wet earth and the sound of rain dripping through leaves. Bourg the dog is entirely nonplussed by rain, so I am forced to don my waterproof gear and step out with her. She’s been going slightly bonkers of late, with the epic rabbit population at the moment. Our littlest cat has become quite adept at catching them – far more adept than the dog – and I’d rather he ate that than cheap meat from a cat-food tin. Our other cat turns his nose up at rabbit though; he wants it in a tin with ‘rabbit’ on the side, all pre-processed for him! We had a bit of drama here the bank holiday weekend when the water pipes outside the cottage sprang a leak. Des, our neighbour, had been monitoring the water and it seemed a lot was escaping….somewhere. Those of you who’ve been out walking at Cuckmere recently and thought you’d come across the work of aliens or other crop-circlemaking phenomena, fear not! The squares (not circles) of turf are where we dug down to try and find the source of the leak, helped by Des’s water-divining techniques using a key and piece of string (slightly hindered by the wind!). It took some serious digging and divining on the part of Cuckmere folk to find the leak, but it was located in the end. Well done all! 5th May was also our five-year wedding anniversary and Robb made me a driftwood frame with a map of our wedding location – under the trees in my sister’s East Hoathly woodland. I think he’d been anticipating this anniversary with some excitement, as the traditional gift for five years is wood. A perfect excuse to escape to the shed with some woodworking tools! We’ve had some amazing stormy weather here on the cliffs. It’s so exhilarating when you’re in the midst of it. I woke one morning to see that the tide was out but there was a strong south-westerly blowing. The sound of the wind was incredible as it screamed against the house. I watched all morning as the tide came in, the waves getting bigger and angrier with every passing minute. When they finally reached the sea wall, the fun started! Great breakers

booming up against the wall, throwing up a huge wall of spray that engulfed the house each time. Standing in the conservatory was like being in a carwash. I wanted to try and capture the whole experience so I turned the camera to video mode and stood diligently at the window. But of course, it was always when I turned the thing off that the really big waves broke. After a while, I realised that it was one of those moments you have to just experience and really be present for - a good lesson to remember at Cuckmere. The other night when the moon looked enormous and was glowing on the water like quick-moving silver silk, I decided not to try and capture it on camera but just to enjoy the transient moment. The garden took a battering with the wind, with flowers and petals blown everywhere, and several things snapped in two. The wind burn is a new thing to me too, and we lost a lot of our new seedlings. You live and learn, of course, and I’ll take steps to protect as much as I can in the garden next time. That said, when a storm blows in, sometimes you just have to stand back in awe at the power of nature and then pick up the pieces afterwards! June is such an exciting month for us here, with lots of lovely workshops lined up. They start with some watercolour painting on 2nd June with Alison Cotton, followed by two exciting children’s art workshops with teacher Jane Henderson, on 3rd and 10th June. Then we have Bringing Shakespeare Alive with Miranda Kingsley from 16th to17th June, which looks set to be full of inspiration and fun for everyone, and then poet Kay Syrad’s Summer Solstice writing workshop on Saturday 23rd June, when we’ll have a fire in the garden and watch the stars at a magical time of year. We’re really looking forward to these great new events, and welcome you to share them with us. To find out more, visit our website at www.cuckmerecottage.co.uk. Right, with all those lovely events in mind, I’m off to do a sun-dance! Luck Corkhill

Seaford and Bishopstone Neighbourhood Watch Association ‘Promoting Good Citizenship, Neighbourliness and Crime Reduction.’

Newsletter Spring 2012

DEVELOPMENT UPDATE We successfully completed our relaunch in the West and North Areas with the Autumn 2011 Newsletter, and can boast that following 18 months of effort, NHW is now re-established again across the whole of the Seaford and Bishopstone area. There were just under 1000 households registered as members at the time this newsletter went to print, and we intend to increase this number significantly.

our neighbourhood more secure and to make our community feel safer by working with Sussex Police and other partnership bodies. As a consequence, our objectives are: l To prevent crime. l To assist the police in detecting crime. l To reduce the fear of crime. l To improve police/community liaison. l To increase community safety.

The BENEFITS of membership are as follows: Your local area can be monitored by a Road Co-ordinator, leading to lower crime rates. l By supplying an email address, you will receive regular emails from NHW which will include Police news and updates of local information. l 4 newsletters per year. l Improved local relations and a sense of community We will be delivering over 6500 copies of this spirit. newsletter through the current network and we will l Peace of mind that neighbours, even if you don’t also publish it in Seaford Scene for the benefit of those know them, have the same values and also wish to not yet receiving an individual copy. see a crime-free area. l A channel to report suspicious issues to the local FURTHER ACHIEVMENTS police and to receive information back from them. 1. The main aim of the NCC Zone is to prevent rogue traders from calling unannounced and exploiting vulnerable residents.

For any queries on the status of your membership, please do not hesitate to contact the Membership Secretary direct. His contact details are below.

POLICE PANEL MEETINGS Following consultation with Seaford Town Council and NHW, the police have reformatted the Panel Meetings. Instead of there being a Panel for each of the 5 voting wards (which meant 20 meetings each year), there is now a West Panel, an East Panel and a Central Panel, which covers the commercial centre of the town. Firle Road is the approximate split point between the West and East Panels. The next meetings are as follows: West Panel – 25/4, 7pm Baptist Church. East Panel – 22/5, 7pm St Lukes Church. Central Panel – 23/5, 6pm 37 Church Street. Times and venues are also displayed at the police station, No 37 Church Street, and on the Police website www.sussex.police.uk. Please check for up to date confirmation if you plan to attend, as sometimes the dates are changed due to operational commitments.

DELIVERERS/VOLUNTEERS Deliverers are an essential part of the Neighbourhood Watch Association, in that they deliver these newsletters door to door twice a year, but some also keep a wary eye and ear open for any suspicious activity in their vicinity and act as a Road Co-ordinator as well. We have a number of vacancies in all areas, plus there are some roads that have never been covered by a deliverer. If you would like to volunteer to help us in this worthwhile cause, we would be very pleased to hear from you, and invite you to contact the Chairman or Treasurer. Our contact details are set out further on.

YEARLY SUBSCRIPTIONS May we take this opportunity to remind you that we have realigned the subscription year to be concurrent with the calendar year, and that the annual renewal of NHW subscriptions for 2012 is now due. We hope all current members who have not already done so, will renew their membership upon receipt of this newsletter, and that anybody not yet subscribing will please consider joining us. The more members we enrol, the more influence we will have in our support of local organisations, the police and crime reduction issues.

STREET LIGHTING Please be aware ESCC are planning to reduce the intensity of our street lights after midnight as an economy measure. Some roads will be dimmed, others will have 50% turned off, and others completely turned off. Please take every opportunity to canvass them to reduce their plans and keep as many alight as possible. DIGITAL SWITCHOVER Please be aware the Digital Switchover gives an opportunity for unscrupulous people to try and gain entry to your premises on the pretext of sorting out a problem etc. Any valid technician would have made a prior appointment, so please be on your guard and ask for identity and credentials before letting anybody into your home. Richard Bosworth,Treasurer.

The Seaford Musical Theatre presents

When The Lights Go On Again by Roy Sault

The Seaford Musical Theatre cast and crew will be taking their audiences back to wartime England during the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee week, 6-9 June 2012. ‘When The Lights Go On Again’, by Roy Sault, is a clever musical observation on the humour that took the nation through the dark years; rationing, school concerts, air raids, queues and spam all get a look in, along with the hilarious Sergeant Major and his motley crew at the Camp Concert. The script follows the Parker family and their interactions with their community with many members writing moving letters to relatives and loved ones who have been ‘called up’ for the war effort. The nostalgic and haunting songs include ‘The White Cliffs of Dover’ and some wonderful fun children’s classics, performed by the SMT Junior section, including ‘Run, Rabbit, Run’. The classic comedy characters of Gran, Vera and Elsie will have the audience in stitches and the show culminates in a singalong VE/VJ Day community street party. Directed by Julie Terry, this is a show not to be missed. Performances take place at the Barn Theatre, Saxon Lane Car Park, Seaford from 6 - 9 June at 7.30pm with an additional matinee performance on the 9th at 2.30pm. Tickets cost £9/£6 and £7.50 for NSU card holders and are available from the Tourist Information Centre, Church Street, Seaford, Tel: 01323 897426.

SEAHAVEN VETERANS’ AND ARMED FORCES’ DAY SATURDAY 30th JUNE 2012. Because of Jubilee Celebrations followed by the Olympics, the organising committee of the Seahaven Veterans’ and Armed Forces Day has decided to scale down this year’s event to a special Band Concert on the Seaford Sea Front. The determination is, however, that next year the day will return to be fully commemorated as over the past few years. On Saturday 30th June, the concert will take place at the Martello Tower on Seaford’s Sea Front at 2.30pm. The band will play until 3pm, when a static parade of standards, veterans and service cadets will take place and be inspected. The band will resume at 3.30pm and the event close at 4pm. The Seaford Silver Band has kindly agreed to play on this special occasion and the Inspecting Officer will be the Vice Lord Lieutenant of East Sussex, Mrs Sara Stonor. The event will be free and it is hoped will attract many veterans and their families. Those attending might wish to bring their own seating. The organising committee consists of representatives of Seaford Town Council, the Seahaven Branch of ‘The Royal Society of St George’, the Seahaven Branch of RAFA, Rotary, Seaford Silver Band and the Seaford Branch of the Royal British Legion. Local branches of Forces Charities and the Service Cadets are invited to attend with their standards and members, and to have stalls in the vicinity as directed by a representative of the Town Council. Seaford’s Museum of local history will open at 1.30pm, with free admission for the afternoon. Visitors will be able see the military history display, buy from the shop and

the Society of Sussex Painters

Exhibition at the Crypt Gallery, 23 Church Street.

Saturday 9th - Thursday 21st June Daily 10.30am - 4.30pm (Last day closes at 3pm)

Society of Sussex Painters, Sculptors and Engravers is holding an exhibition of paintings and engravings at the Crypt Gallery, Seaford. This group is a society of artists who have in the main been professionally trained. We seek to encourage relevant work which reflects the world we live in and to be innovative and original. We use our exhibition not only to sell but as a showcase for the exchange of ideas and we aim to facilitate the development of new work which can be traditional or contemporary. All work therefore should be of a high professional standard and integrity. Since it’s start in 1924, the society has always believed that drawing with competence and understanding should be evident in some stages of any piece of work. The scope of our work is very general, but naturally, being a Sussex society, we tend to specialise in the Sussex scene that is, Downland scapes and costal views. Former members of the society have included such distinguished artists as Glyn Philpot, George Hooper, Charles Morris, Charles Knight, Dorothy Coke and Luther Roberts. We hold three or four exhibitions each year and welcome new members. If you are interested in joining, please apply to the steward at the exhibition or contact Helen Armstrong on 01273 881304.

GETTING WED? GET A WILL Helping out at our law firm’s stall at a wedding fair last month, a lot of people stopped to ask me if we were there to offer advice on divorce. Thankfully even lawyers aren’t that pessimistic!

Of course not everyone wants their spouse to inherit everything, especially if they have children by a previous relationship. Yet without a valid, up to date will, there is no opportunity to say who gets what.

Instead we were talking to couples about the legal issues to consider when getting married, or forming a civil partnership (civil partnerships have very similar legal implications to marriage).

There’s no denying that legal paperwork is pretty dull when compared to cakes, dresses or flowers, but it’s all part of securing a happy future together.

For example, if you already have a will, this is very likely to be revoked by your marriage, unless it was specifically written to take it into account. If a will is revoked and that person dies before their partner, the surviving spouse will not necessarily inherit the entire estate because intestacy laws come into play. This means the government decides what happens to your assets.

Wills Are you aware of how your estate would be distributed if you died without making a will? It might not be as you think or would wish for, leaving a lot of potential problems for your beneficiaries. A will is inexpensive to make and the professional advice you will receive at Barwells will ensure that your loved ones are left with as few problems as possible.

Lasting Powers of Attorney This document enables you to give named persons, your attorneys, the powers to deal with your affairs should you become unable to deal with them yourself. The document can be, and should be, prepared well in advance so that it is there if the time comes. It must not be left until it is too late as a person without capacity cannot then appoint attorneys and an application to the Court to appoint a Deputy must be made, which is much more time consuming and expensive. The moral is to prepare the document when you can and, if you have elderly relatives, make sure that they have done so as well.

Estates If a relative has passed away, it is very often a stressful time for the family. In these circumstances, our team of specialists at Barwells can take the burden of dealing with the estate off your hands, bringing to bear our extensive experience in the administration of estates. If you find yourself having to consider dealing with an estate, give us a call and we can let you know how we can help.

Special Spring Offer Consult us regarding a Lasting Power of Attorney and receive a 20% discount on our normal charge on production of this leaflet. Offer ends 31st July 2012.

Short Story by Alan Morton

White Room Colin Anscombe took a deep breath of early spring air as he watched the robin darting about the soil he had just turned over. Preparing the vegetable patch each year after the winter frost had done its work had never been one of his favourite jobs. There was a time when he could have turned over a whole row or two before he felt the need to rest, but nowadays, in his early sixties, it was after only a couple of lifts and breaking up of clods that found him leaning on his garden fork and contemplating his garden and life in general. He adjusted the stereo earpiece in his right ear that linked to his MP3 player. How things had changed during his lifetime. Always a lover of popular music, he recalled his first introduction to this world when he tuned the dial to 208 on his parent’s radiogram in 1962 to listen to Radio Luxembourg. His interest in those first hits, Telstar, Let’s Dance and Venus in Blue Jeans, briefly lead to Cliff and the Shadows before the Beatles took the world by the scruff of the neck. During those early years, his radio listening had been augmented by a meagre vinyl record collection that only really obtained some substance when he first went out to work. Even then, he found himself selling his albums to fund the purchase of others. The collection stagnated during the early years of his marriage, but steadily grew again as he was introduced to many new bands when he listened to the Alan Freeman rock shows in the 1970s. He would record shows and albums onto cassette tapes so he could lug his portable player into the garden or greenhouse. This had been his private domain, his first wife not considering anything being worthy of listening to if it was not played on Radio 3. Then vinyl and tape cassettes were superseded by the digital age and CDs, and before long he was able to download a large proportion of his record collection onto an MP3 player that was no bigger than a pack of chewing gum. Many tracks, despite the number of times he had heard them over the intervening years, evoked particular memories from his past, and the one that had just started to play, took him back to Hartington in suburban Surrey during the winter of 1969. * Colin stood in front of the record player on the table in the corner of the church hall. The vinyl single turning at 45rpm was the latest by Cream, White Room. Colin quite liked it; better than their first offering Wrapping Paper, which, in the midst of psychedelia a few years previously, had left him cold. I Feel Free had been better, but he preferred the B-side, NSU. His inherent insecurity manifested a compensatory need in him to be regarded as with it, and embrace new music by the likes of Cream and Jimi Hendrix, although he did find it a struggle; but this track, White Room, was cool, especially the

80

wah-wah guitar. Besides, he was looking for music with a bit more substance than songs like Lily the Pink and Ob-la-di-ob-lada that had been dominating the charts recently. A boy he did not know stood behind the table and was obviously in charge of selecting the music for the youth club throng to gyrate to. In fact Colin knew very few of the people in the hall; this was not his local youth club, and he didn’t frequent that to any degree. He had come along with Peanut, an ex-classmate from Milton Street School which they had both attended up until fifteen months previously. Peanut wasn’t the only ex-classmate in the hall, and this was the reason for Colin’s attendance. Katie was here. Katie Simmonds, the girl he had carried a torch for throughout the latter years of school, but although she was friendly, his attentions had been entirely unreciprocated. Katie was different now. This shock realisation first came about when he contrived to meet her on the way home from work some three months after leaving school. Her taste in clothes and make-up transformed her appearance, and with it, her overall demeanour. The objective for that chance meeting was to ask her out on a date, but he found her new attitude and appearance more than a little intimidating, as well as frequent reference to “Gary in Accounts.” “Take your coat off, Anscy,” said Peanut laughing, “nobody will know whether you are coming or going.” Colin slipped off his short length coat and laid it on the mound of such attire that had grown on the stage in the church hall. He was wearing his signature check sports jacket; an item he hated with a passion, but he had nothing better. He had been wearing it for over two years now, and he recalled how he had tried to steer his father towards a more Mod look, with a high collar, when the selection was being made in Croydon that Saturday afternoon. It wasn’t his money, so Colin had little by way of input into the selection. His Dad thought that it would have suited him fine; very smart, but it didn’t occur to him that a look that suited someone of middle age would not have similar effect on his adolescent son. Colin also adorned his favourite paisley patterned tie, a present from four Christmases ago, but this was a limp concession to modernity, and was showing signs of having seen better days. Colin’s attention was focused across the hall on Katie, who was wearing a very modern-looking light coloured mini-dress, her long blonde hair being held in place by a matching silk headband. She was jigging about in time to the music opposite a tall boy with dark hair that Colin did not know, but had occasionally seen around Hartington. He doubted that it was “Gary from Accounts,” and if not, maybe Katie wasn’t going out with anybody in particular. Colin had heard from Peanut that Katie was attending this youth club, and he had come along in the hope of revisiting a relationship that had never actually started. “Hello Colin.” Colin looked to his left; it was Laura Yates, Katie’s best friend. Also an ex-classmate, Colin had known her since the first day

of Infants fourteen years ago. She used to be a pudgy child and Colin had christened her Piggy, a name that had stuck for a few years throughout junior school, and had caused her much grief. She learnt to forgive him, and in the latter days of secondary school, she had a terrible crush on her former tormenter. “Oh, hello Laura,” he replied, taken unawares. She had also changed. Wearing a mini dress with more shape than Katie’s and a pair of bright red shiny shoes, she looked very feminine. Colin found this development of girls he had known for years somewhat disconcerting. He was noticing things that had not been there before and he wasn’t sure if this was a good thing. “Who’s that bloke with Katie?” he asked, looking over once again to the animated couple on the far side of the hall. Laura looked disappointed, and followed Colin’s line of vision. “That’s Stan…. Stanley Hooper, he went to the grammar school…. he works up in London.” In London, so Katie may see him on the train…. So they could be going out with one another, he thought. As if reading his thoughts Laura blurted out “he’s not her boyfriend,” but she immediately regretted it. Colin’s immediate thought was that there was an inference that somebody else was? “Has she got a boyfriend,” he found himself asking. “Yes….No… I am not sure,” said Laura indignantly, but Colin didn’t notice.

A few moments later Katie’s eyes met Colin’s gaze. There was hardly anything by way of acknowledgement, the mere tip of her head to one side, the sort of greeting that you would exchange with somebody you recognised in the street as you passed them by, but not stopping to share any time with. He squirmed with embarrassment at the wide smile and mouthed hello he offered by way of return. What is wrong with me? How can she be so cruel and barely recognise my very existence. Can’t she see how I feel? How can she be so blind as to what is staring her in the face? At that moment, in the Ladies’ Cloakroom, Laura was looking into a large mirror, dabbing tears from her cheeks with a lacy handkerchief and trying in vain to maintain the lines of her smudging mascara. Colin was thinking that this had been a huge mistake, and now regretted taking off his coat and was wondering how he could surreptitiously recover it from the pile on the stage and make a discreet exit. * Colin’s thought’s were brought back to the present by his second wife, Sue. “Tea up…. What were you thinking about….You looked miles away….. deep in thought..” “Oh, nothing; just wondering where to site the runner beans this year.” Alan Morton – Author of The Beatles Generation www.thebeatlesgeneration.com

SEAFORD CHORAL SOCIETY CONCERT

Saturday 28th April, St Leonard’s Church, Seaford Brahms’ towering choral work Ein Deutsches Requiem – A German Requiem – came to Seaford yesterday evening when the Seaford Choral Society, under the confident leadership of Musical Director Sion Parry, tackled this challenging piece. In its distinguished history, which can be traced back to 1917, SCS has sung the German Requiem on three previous occasions and last night’s performance was a worthy successor to this fine legacy. The Requiem bears all the hallmarks of Brahms’ writing at its best: soaring harmonic architecture, complex contrapuntal interweaving and heart-melting melodies which follow you around for days! Once it had got into its stride, the choir gave a fine performance-handling both the meaty fugal passages and the homophonic tuttis with assuredness and musicality. A lovely tone was produced throughout, but particularly in the pivotal fourth movement, ‘How lovely are Thy dwellings’ where the contemplative mood was beautifully captured.

The performance was complemented by two soloists whose voices were superbly suited to the demands of the Brahms score: Jozik Koc (baritone) and Lucinda Houghton (soprano). Jozik produced a superb sound which glided effortlessly above a sensitive choral accompaniment provided by the choir, and faultless diction meant you could hear every word. Lucinda gave an equally accomplished performance in her fifthmovement solo, suggesting that maternal consolation which Brahms so mourned. The soloists also had the opportunity to entertain the audience in Seaford Parish Church in the lighter first half of the programme, ranging from Finzi’s setting of Shakespeare songs to ‘Novello’s Dancing Years’ and Kern’s ‘All the things you are’. The concert opened with Faure’s beautiful ‘Cantique de Jean Racine’ in which the choral lyricism of the SCS’s singing was sensitively supported by Nick Milner-Gulland on the organ: he is to be congratulated on a musical tour-de-force, playing for the whole evening! It is refreshing to see the confidence of the Seaford Choral Society in sustaining such a breadth of programming and to see them mustering not only such a loyal audience but some 100 singers in the choir. A fantastic effort all round. Jane Pendry Seaford Choral Society’s Good Friday ‘Pay to Sing or Listen’ concert raised £818 for the local charity Homelink. The collection at the end of the Spring Concert raised £410 for Seaford Down’s Syndrome and Special Needs Support Group. The Society thanks all who so generously contributed to these happy outcomes.

Mockford’s the Blindmakers Specialists in quality handmade vertical and roller blinds

Telephone: 01323 417518 The Industrial estate, GREEN STREET, EASTBOURNE, BN20 1QN OPEN 9.30PM TO 1PM MON TO SAT So many of Jean and Harvey Mockford’s Seaford customers recommend them or place new orders, that they do not need to advertise; however many are unaware that the ten-year lease on the shop in Sutton Road has expired. As their customers in Seaford are too numerous to contact individually, this notice of their address and telephone number will appear in the Seaford Scene each month. Nothing else has changed; they still regard themselves as Seaford’s Blindmakers abeit based 15 minutes away in Eastbourne, where their headquarters have been for more than a quarter of a century. To telephone for after-sales service, or to arrange for Jean to call to estimate for new blinds (that are guaranteed for 20 years) or if you wish to visit the showroom, take the A259 from Seaford, on approaching Eastbourne go straight ahead at the traffic lights, then by the Tally Ho pub turn left into Green Street and the industrial estate is up a driveway opposite the first bus shelter.

U FIT BLINDS MADE TO MEASURE, DIY ONLY ADDRESS, TELEPHONE NUMBER AND DIRECTIONS AS MOCKFORDS ABOVE. When we asked customers why they purchased u fit blinds, a few of their replies were: “Other firms said, ‘why fit blinds yourself, we fit them free of charge?’ What they should have said is, ‘fitting is included in the price of the blinds’. I bought one from u fit and saved £40; the only way to get free fitting is to fit it yourself”. “I went to a DIY superstore for a vertical blind; they didn’t have they size I needed, which meant I would have had to cut it down, which sounded like a lot of hassle. A mate said “go to u fit for a made-to-measure budget blind, they have 1,000 cloths to choose from”, so I did”. “I was confident about fitting a roller blind but not so sure I would get the measurements right, until I heard about u fit’s unique system of checking the measurements, which is so simple it must be foolproof”. “My wife and I derive a lot of pleasure from furnishing our home to a very high standard. I am a retired engineer and immediately appreciated your hand made deluxe vertical blinds tracking system and the attention to detail in sewing the hems with colour co-ordinating thread.”

Beckwith of Sussex thinks big for 2012 Beckwith of Sussex moved into new premises in February, as the business prepares for its future under the next generation of family management.

Brighton’s oldest removal companies, established in 1927 by Alfred Beckwith and then bought from him on his retirement in 1984 by John and Claire Ballard and Barry Clark. A member of Britannia Movers International since 1986, Beckwith quickly expanded into international removals, especially to France and Spain. Through fires, floods and two nasty recessions, the business has survived and prospered since then, and now Simon, Barry's son, and John's youngest son Cameron are taking the business forward. John comments that since Spanish works has fallen off in recent years Simon has successfully replaced this with a fortnightly service to Switzerland/Germany and a weekly service to France. With this type of fresh approach to finding opportunities in the business, Beckwith of Sussex is looking to the future with confidence from its sparkling new headquarters.

The building in Newhaven provides the company with a large container warehouse as well as superb office facilities. Using the warehouse, Beckwith will be able to develop lucrative self-storage and archive storage services for customers. Beckwith of Sussex is one of

SEAFORD KURLERS Hopefully we have left the Ice Age and at some stage we will have a summer. With the rain pouring down and a hosepipe ban in place, who knows what will happen next? Throughout it all Seaford Kurlers continue to flourish. We have at long last completed our annual in-house tournament. The event was dogged by the bad weather and a spate of illness. The winners for 2011/2012 were Joyce Lane and Barbara Bradley. They were presented with the shield from the previous winners, Bill Braddock and Keith Hylands, on Tuesday 8th May, 2012. Seahaven Lionesses held their annual tournament in the Downs Leisure Centre on May 5th. This is an annual sports competition held every year between the various Lionesses

in the region. This year the organisation was very good. Seaford Kurlers were there to do the refereeing and it was a brilliant evening. The staff of the Wave Leisure Centre were marvellous to us and provided refreshments throughout the event. I must say a very big thank you to them. The winners of the tournament were: 1st: Adur East 11 points, Equal 2nd: Brighton/Rottingdean 8 points, 4th: Lewes 7 points. As a ‘thank you’ to Seaford Kurlers for doing the refereeing, the Lionesses presented us with their raffle money. So another thank you to them. As I write this article we have yet to hold our Jubilee Party which is on the 29th May at the Downs Leisure Centre. Fingers crossed all will go well. The Leisure Centre is doing the catering for the event and the colour scheme of course will be red, white and blue. There will NOT be any kurling meeting on the Jubilee Day (5th June 2012). For details of Seaford Kurlers contact Mrs June Wood, 7 Landsdown Road, Seaford, BN25 3JS, tel. 01323 895376 or on email: sally1989@tiscsli.co.uk. We meet every Tuesday at 2pm until 4pm, with a break for refreshments half way. Your first visit if free, thereafter it is £2.50 with an annual membership of £5, payable each January.

Compass Travel is pleased to announce that they have recently been awarded a contract by East Sussex County Council to operate four main daily bus routes in the area, plus several school journeys & a Saturday service. These routes will be operated as part of the Council’s RIDER network. They were formerly operated by the Renown Group and will be taken over by Compass from 21st May. Compass Travel is an independent bus company based in Worthing and is currently operating a large network of services in West Sussex. A new depot will be opened in Lewes for these East Sussex routes. To operate the services Compass has ordered six new British-built Optare buses. These buses have good ‘green’ credentials and will offer lowfloor accessibility, including facilities for passengers using a wheelchair and those with a child buggy. Each bus is also fitted with a CCTV camera system to improve safety. The vehicles go into service on the routes following their delivery at the end of June. For the first few weeks the routes will be operated with buses from the existing Compass fleet.

The Alzheimer’s Society has argued that money wasted on sedative drugs should be spent on training care home staff to deliver good quality dementia care. Research has shown that anti-psychotics have minimal benefit and drastically increase the risk of medical complications, leaving people with dementia robbed of their quality of life. At Clifden House we reduce the use of all unnecessary and harmful medication, allowing our residents to lead a full and active life in a purpose built environment where the care team are able to offer the assistance that they need.
