Seaford Community Garden

CHANGES AFOOT

What a difference a year brings... 12 months ago Seaford Community Garden’s entrance from the Crouch Gardens was a sea of mud after rain, with plants displayed on a rickety table. Fast forward to today and our visitors’ feet are treated to a paving slabbed entrance flanked by tidy gravel, and a vista of tempting plants to buy at very reasonable prices, shown off on timber shelving built by James and Dan. The paving continues all round the garden, which is now wheelchair friendly, and at the time of writing, the high raised bed – James and Dan’s latest enterprise – were almost finished, ready to be planted by the garden volunteers. We have the Rotary Club of Seaford to thank for the materials for these. The old strawberry bed facing the entrance has been dug over and is being replanted with flowers and grasses, together with apple trees that are being ‘stepover’ trained by Katie so as to give maximum production for minimum space. The polytunnel is also due for a facelift and will be getting new staging thanks to a generous donation from Wave Leisure. This will be ranged at different heights to provide the most comfortable working positions for people with varying needs and will replace a mish-mash of assorted grills, boards and wobbly shelving held together with bits of string, on which potting up has taken place for the past few years.

The garden is open each Wednesday morning from 9.30am until 12.30pm and we will also be eager to show visitors around on Sunday 23rd June when we are part of the Mayor’s Garden Trail. Come on that day and we hope to have pumpkin seeds or plants available for you to grow your own ready for the Pumpkin Parade next Hallowe’en. We’d love to see you. The Garden Team Photos: The staging and the huge array of home-grown plants to sell at the garden. Radishes were the first salad veg of the season but lots more is ready for picking.

WHAT TO DO IN JUNE

3 Water plants thoroughly during hot spells. Concentrate on newly

planted young plants and those in pots or containers. 3 Check the need for weeding regularly. Dig up all traces of perennial weeds. Hand weed or hoe annual weeds. 3 Disbud hybrid tea roses if larger blooms required for showing. Remove all smaller buds leaving one large bud to flower. 3 Plant anemones to flower in the autumn. Try soaking the tubers overnight to get them off to a really good start. Plant two inches deep and four inches apart. 3 Visit our Coffee Morning and Flower Show on Saturday morning 15th June at St. Leonard’s Church Hall. Open 10.30 to 12.00. Entry £1 includes refreshments. 12

the winter. It is best to grow them in a large pot with handles so that they can be moved more easily into a greenhouse or conservatory when frost is due. They prefer a rich loamy lime-free (Ericaceous) soil with an added blood fish and bone dressing plus extra bark. Water regularly during the growing season with rain water only. Water into the top crown of the plant where the fronds unfurl. During the growing season water once a week with a tree fern feed (available from most garden centres) to encourage new growth. Move outside in the spring or early summer when the risk of frost has ceased. Place the pot in partial shade. During the summer the outside of the trunk should be kept moist and should not dry out. Enjoy this unusual plant in your garden.

t

The Tree Fern (Dicksonia Antartica) is not a tree at all; it is just a fern that looks like a tree! These tree ferns were introduced to Europe in the 1880s and were once quite rare other than in the exotic glass- houses of the rich and famous. However, they are now becoming very popular in the UK and can be purchased from most garden centres throughout the year. It is called a tree fern because it looks like an upright log covered in hairs. This trunk is actually made of the fibrous remains of the old roots and fronds. New lush green fronds unfurl each year and can grow quite large. At its base it has a rhizome. These ferns are very slow growing at about two inches a year, which probably accounts for their high cost. They are hardy down to minus 5 but it is best to give them some protection during

When is a tree not a tree?

HOYA Wax Plant

From late spring to early autumn the Hoya or Wax Plant has dark succulent leaves and produces bunches of sweet, fragrant, starshaped flowers particularly at night. Although an exotic tropical plant it is surprisingly hardy almost down to freezing. The Hoya needs bright light but avoid the hot summer sun. If growth is spindly and the flower buds drop off then the light levels are too low. Hoyas flower better when slightly pot bound. Feed with a houseplant fertilizer and water with care. If the pot seems too cramped then transplant into a new pot one size larger in late spring using a peat based compost with added sand or Perlite to aid drainage. Do not move plants once flower buds appear. Train up moss poles, canes or use in a basket as a trailing plant. These are lovely conservatory plants. Mike Parker (Chairman)

Seaford Gardening Club

At long last it looks as if Spring has arrived – even if a little late! We can now venture into our gardens to start tidying up and to sow seeds to give us a summer display of colour. Our speaker for April, Mrs Amanda Millar, gave a very informative talk on ‘Working with Bats’. She runs a Bat Hospital and keeps bees – a very busy lady. These fascinating nocturnal flying mammals have been around for 52 million years ascertained from fossils found.

Amanda tends to a number of injured bats at the hospital but they are easy to work with as they do not treat humans as a threat. Bats have very fragile bones and wings and can sustain some nasty injuries – some of their injuries were shown to us on slides and looked quite horrific, especially if they had flown into cars or received pressure effects from wind turbines – even fly papers can be a menace! They mate in winter and babies are born in summer, though it is very rare for them to breed in captivity unless brought in for treatment when already pregnant.

There should be something for everyone among the eight available categories: Best Front Garden; Best Back Garden; Best Container Garden; Best Hanging Basket (private); Best Hanging Basket (commercial); Best Street/Close/Row (min. of four adjacent houses); Best Commercial Premises; Best New Entry.

This year, Michael and Pippa Logan’s annual fund raising Garden Party which is held at 31 Sutton Avenue Seaford, will be in aid of Seaford in Bloom, Mary’s Meals and Seaford Exchange.

For example just one hanging basket can be entered, and the entrant does not need to be present for the judging, as long as there is access for the judges to carry out their task on 9th July.

The event takes place on Sunday 9th June from 1.30 to 5pm and includes Sussex Cream Teas, a Surprise Tombola, Bric-a Brac, various stalls, homemade cakes and a performance by the Seaford Silver Band.

Entries should be submitted, with name, address and phone number, to Seaford in Bloom, 17 Sandore Road, Seaford, BN25 3PZ to arrive by 1st July 2013. Entry forms are available at Fotobox, Broad Street and The Tourist Information Centre, Church Street or can be downloaded from www.seaford-sussex.co.uk/sib

The Seaford in Bloom Committee is very grateful for Michael and Pippa’s kind gesture and hope that there will be strong support for these three worthy causes. For more information, especially regarding contributions for the stalls, please phone 01323 491566. he 2013 Seaford in Bloom Floral Competition will be judged on Tuesday 9th July and we would like as many entries as possible.

Seaford in Bloom Open Gardens Day, sponsored by Rowland Gorringe Estate Agents, is on Sunday 14th July from 1-6pm and this year there are three new venues among the nine lovely gardens to view. Full details will be published in next month’s Seaford Scene and on posters displayed around the town.

Kayaking @ Cuckmere Haven The South Downs National Park celebrates second birthday and short film competition. Chris Conil (below), one of the winning finalists with his video, ‘Kayaking @ Cuckmere Haven’ was honoured to receive his award at Midhurst, West Sussex. Chris, a local freelance video producer, has filmed many aspects of Seaford, a wonderful location that inspires the imagination. The theme was ‘My South Downs’, to capture in three minutes the essence of this majestic landscape in sound and vision. Filmed last year over a couple of months at the Seven Sisters Country Park Canoe & Kayak Centre the film features Martin Cornforth (above), instructor and keen enthusiast who, after a few informal safety and coaching lessons, encouraged his two daughters, Esther (above) and Katie in the simple relaxing pursuit of kayaking, meandering along the still waters. It’s a great way to experience the open countryside, slowly drifting towards the Coastal Cottages and the sea. The Judges included Hugh Bonneville, star of Downton Abbey, Amanda Elmes, Jo Carr, Rebecca Watkin and Emily Kyriakides (Programme Producer, Lighthouse) who said: “Chris’s film is such a wonderful advert for adventure in this iconic part of the National Park. I was impressed with how he had captured the energy of the activity and then settled into a more contemplative and relaxing mood. He has a very strong technique and kept my interest with a good variety of shots.” The winning entrants covered a varied and personal view of this stunning landscape, capturing the simple pleasures of the South Downs. Hope you enjoy the film: http://youtu.be/PkIj_9bOnEg

CIVIC LEADERS SUPPORT ST GEORGE’S DAY EVENTS On St George’s Day, 23rd April, the Seahaven Branch of The Royal Society of St George held a church service in St Andrew’s Church Alfriston, followed by a formal dinner in Deans Place Hotel. The Lord Lieutenant, Mr Peter Field, along with the new High Sheriff for East Sussex, Mr Graham Peters, headed a galaxy of other civic leaders at these events, including the Chair of Lewes District and the Mayors of Seaford, Newhaven, Peacehaven and Lewes with the Deputy Mayor of Telscombe. The church service was extra special this year as the new branch Standard of St George, presented by its President Don Mabey MBE, was dedicated in front of a packed congregation. The service was conducted by the Branch Chaplain, Revd David Farrant, with the Rector of St Andrew’s, Revd James Howson. The formal dinner was a great success with the Lord Lieutenant responding on behalf of the guests relating some of the history of St George and his influence on England. Branch Chairman, Bob Peedle MBE said “With sixtyfive members and guests sitting down to dine it was our largest number in the three years of the branch’s existence. The atmosphere was relaxed, friendly and patriotic. I felt very privileged to be there.” A raffle organised by committee member Maeve Mabey, raised £214 for the branch, part of which will be used to support the Seahaven Veterans’ and Armed Forces Day on 29th June, which is for the whole of the Lewes District and will be held at the Martello Fields, Seaford. The governing body of ‘The Royal Society of St George’, which was formed in 1894 and has branches throughout the world, was represented by its Council Vice Chairman,

Joanna Cadman. Branch Secretary, Julie Bradley, is also a member of that council and on Saturday 20th April, attended the Cenotaph in London and laid a wreath on behalf of the branch. Each year the Society holds an annual parade of service cadets and members at the Cenotaph which is followed by the laying of a wreath at the tomb of the Unknown Warrior in Westminster Abbey. Also attending the day were two representatives from youth organisations in the area, Cadet Sergeant George Wells from the Air Training Corps Squadron at Newhaven and Explorer Scout Luke Williams from Seahaven Scouts. Locally, activities for St George’s Day started the previous week when the branch chairman visited the Alfriston Primary School to talk to the assembly about St George and the Royal Society. Then on Saturday 20th April, the parishes of Alciston and Selmeston got together for a St George’s Supper in the Village Hall. The event was packed, with thirteen members of the Royal Society of St George present. The Branch Chairman told the assembly about St George and the Royal Society. The Chairman was again active on Sunday 28th, when he was at St Andrew’s Church, Bishopstone for their St George’s Service. At the same time the Seahaven Scouts held their Service and Parade for their Patron Saint in Seaford and this was supported by the branch President, Don Mabey MBE, and Committee Member, Laurie Holland, both Freemen of Seaford. Photo: The new Standard of St George held by Branch Member, Frank Holland, on his first outing as Standard Bearer. The Branch Chaplain, Revd David Farrant had dedicated the Standard for use by the Branch at the St George’s Day Service.

SEAFORD’S FAMOUS RESIDENT John Purcell Fitzgerald (1804-1879) John Purcell Fitzgerald followed his father to Seaford from the family estate in Suffolk. His father was the last Seaford MP and the owner of Corsica Hall which still graces the seafront of Seaford. John wanted to be a clergyman but apparently ‘brain fever’ prevented this, so he channelled his benevolence into helping the poor. He campaigned for better rights for workers and against slavery. In 1858 he founded the Fitzgerald Almshouses in Croft Lane and was also responsible for helping the local poor particularly after the great flood of 1875, when he opened Corsica Hall to people who had lost their homes and possessions to the flood. Fitzgerald Avenue is named after him.

Seahaven Lioness Club Get ready for summer Gel polish manicure £20 A polish that stays perfect, it’s like a luxury manicure every day.

Sunbed offers also available.

The Lionesses had a busy but successful month in April. On Friday 19th April they ran a Charity Quiz at the Downs Leisure Centre in Seaford. More than 40 people pitted their wits against each other over eight rounds of general knowledge questions and a brain-teasing table round of anagrams, dingbats and connections. The winners were the Welly Wanderers with an impressive score of 119 out of a possible 130. They were presented with a prize of wine and photographed (below) with the fun trophy. Ticket sales and a raffle raised a total profit of just over £200.

On Sunday 21st April, the Lionesses were allocated their slot to run one of the regular car boot sales at The Dell in Peacehaven (photo below). The sun shone and after a fairly chilly start (car booters like to start early!), the crowds of sellers and buyers came and a very successful morning resulted, raising over £500. Also in April we started our regular Saturday morning bric-a-brac stalls in Broad Street, which will continue, weather permitting, three Saturdays each month, until October. All the money raised will go to the Lionesses Charity Trust Fund, which makes grants to organisations and individuals with specific needs in the local community and further afield.

Hilarious outdoor theatre in the Crouch Gardens, this summer! The brilliant Rude Mechanical Theatre Company will give an outdoor performance of their delightful and hilarious new play ‘Harlequin Goes to the Moon’ in the Crouch Gardens, East Street, Seaford this summer. These white-faced clown-like travelling players are described in The Guardian as ‘a crucial part of our theatre ecology’ and in The Independent on Sunday as ‘consistently captivating’. All the actors are experienced full-time professional actors and musicians working regularly on television and in theatres around the country, and perform in a very physical style combining mime and traditional movements dating back to the Italian Renaissance. The play, like all this company’s work, is brand new and has an original musical score performed live by the actors, who are multiple-instrumentalists. “Catalina, the daughter of the great astronomer Il Dottore Pazzo, is madly, desperately, in love with the delicious Federico,

the son inconveniently of Il Magnifico Buco del Culo, a Florentine banker who has reinvented the meaning of ‘mean’. No banker before, nor since, was meaner, more spiteful, more greedy, more inexplicably nastier than he! In fact, he has forbidden them to touch even their little fingers – and to ensure this does not happen he has threatened his servant, Harlequin, and his wife’s maid, Colombina, with ‘death by stretching’ if they should allow it to happen. No way will Federico marry the daughter of an astronomer who is so poor his pants are as ragged as a half-plucked chicken! Harlequin, of course, is terrified - who wouldn’t be? – so, decides to steal Pazzo’s moon ship, a contraption of rotating cogs and wheels, levers, paddles and sails, and fly to the moon where he will no longer be kicked around, but will set up his own government, become Emperor and make the rules. The stable boy, Paglia, who spends most of his time gazing at the moon like a smitten hare, takes little persuading to go with him.” Hilarious antics follow. The performance will be on Wednesday 26th June at 7.30pm. The theatre site in the landscaped area of the Crouch Gardens is reached via East Street and will be open from 6pm for picnics. You should bring your own chairs or rugs as seats are not provided, and extra clothing for when the sun goes down. The play is aimed at adults but will be equally enjoyed by more mature children. Tickets will be available from Newberry Tully Limited, 53 Church Street, Seaford and also online at the Company’s website: www.therudemechanicaltheatre.co.uk where you can read more about them, or you can ring 01323 501260 for details. Seaford Silver Band Spring Concert The Band’s Spring Concert at Seaford Head Upper School Hall on Sunday 14th April was well attended and, from comments received and overheard at the end, much enjoyed. This year the Band had invited two guest acts to join them: Seaford Primary School’s Chamber Choir and Chamber Orchestra under the direction of Head of Music Kate Steer, and Bagpiper Donald Brown. It was a delight to hear the young musicians perform so well and with so much confidence and obvious enjoyment. With an expertise well beyond their years they captivated their audience with their singing and playing. They truly added another, and very welcome, dimension to the evening’s entertainment. Donald Brown is a well-known piper playing at Garden Parties, Weddings and Burns Night Dinners. His playing of that evocative Scottish Air, Highland Cathedral, accompanied by the Band, brought a lump to the throat of many.

The Spring Concert was originally started to give a focus to the early part of the Band’s year and also to raise money for Band funds. This year the Band was delighted to be able to give a donation of £150 from the proceeds of the evening to Seaford Primary School’s Music Department Fund for new instruments. Musical Director Isla Sitwell presented the cheque to one of the young musicians at a School Assembly (above) on 19th April. The Band would like to thank all those who helped ‘front of house’ with the raffle, selling tickets and programmes and with the refreshments. Without such support from our families and friends it would be very difficult to run this annual event.

Rotary Club of Seaford Awards to Town Crier and Musician On Wednesday 3rd April, Seaford Rotary President Paul Vaesen presented Peter and Pat White with Paul Harris Fellowship Awards. The Paul Harris Fellowship is a prestigious award presented to Rotarians and others in recognition of outstanding service to the community, and is named after the founder of Rotary, Paul Harris. Peter White is best known to us as Seaford’s Town Crier, a position that he has held since 1977. He gives a lot of support to so many of our local organisations by announcing their events around the town, not forgetting one of his most important assignments, which is to welcome Father Christmas in his sleigh. In between times he has led brides to the altar and driven shoppers to distraction. And, perhaps most important, he does it all without looking for any reward.

Pat White has been heavily involved in music for her entire life. With the help of husband Peter and others, she formed Seaford Young Musicians some 40 years ago, and it has now spawned the highly successful Seaford Rock and Jazz Orchestra. She has given the Rotary Club of Seaford tremendous help in the last two years in setting up our highly successful Young Musician of the year competition, and she chairs the judges at this competition. Air Ambulance Talk A recent speaker was John KentonPage from the Kent, Surrey & Sussex Air Ambulance Trust. Our previous visit from the Trust had been some five years ago and it was obvious from the start of the talk that the organisation had advanced and changed in many ways since then and was looking at further change in the future. The KSS Air Ambulance traces its origins to the Kent Service started in 1989. In 2007 a service started in Surrey and Sussex and the organisations combined in 2011. Initially there was only one helicopter manned by paramedics and it was seen as a way of getting patients from places difficult to access by land ambulance and reaching a destination hospital more quickly, i.e. as an extension of the normal ambulance service. In 2005 this service was one of the first in this country to include a doctor on the team thus allowing more complex diagnostic decisions to be made on site and increasing the range of immediate treatments available. More recently the facilities on board have been upgraded to the standard and complexity seen only in a major hospital A&E department and the range of treatment available immediately has consequently changed from being purely palliative to virtually any immediately necessary surgical or medical intervention up to and including open heart surgery. This ability has had a dramatic effect on survival rates from the accidents and emergencies attended and the Service is now designated as a Helicopter Emergency Medical Service (HEMS). The Service now has two helicopters incorporating the unique NOTAR system. This means that the helicopter does not have a tail rotor. The benefits of this system are increased safety, lower noise levels, better performance and controllability enhancements. Patients can be taken to Major Trauma Centres with landing facilities, currently all in London as

Brighton has no landing pad. Any part of the region can be reached within 20 minutes. The Service attends an average of 4-6 incidents a day and is deployed by one of our own paramedics working on the HEMS (Helicopter Emergency Medical Service) desk at the 999 control centre. 87% of callouts are to incidents including road accidents (43%) and 13% are to medical emergencies such as cardiac arrests and strokes. There is a close liaison with South East Coast Ambulance Service (SECAmb), Police, Fire and the Coastguard Service. The Service is a charity and is not centrally financed but relies on donations from the public, business and other charitable organisation in the three counties covered as well as its own lottery. The average cost of each mission is £2500 and the annual cost of the Service is £5 million at present though this will rise when planned improvements, including the capability for night flying, come into being shortly. Members of The Rotary Club of Seaford support this Service knowing that at any time we and those in the community we serve may have the misfortune to need its help and its capability to save lives and minimise the consequences of serious and life threatening illness and injury.

Seaford Rotary’s Generous Booters The Rotary Club of Seaford salutes the town’s people for their generosity in making the first Car Boot, Craft and Produce Fair of the year at Martello Fields such a success. Almost as much was received in donations as from the considerable revenue for stallholders’ pitches – and it all goes, of course, to local worthy causes. A fine, bright April day helped things along and although car parking and entry for customers was, as always, free the vast majority contributed to our collecting buckets in exchange for this facility. In fact, it turned out to be a record amount of donations for these events. Considering the modern-day financial pressures on everyone, it was a wonderful effort. And because all the money raised goes to deserving charities, the club remains adamant that the £8 fee for a pitch applies strictly to a single space. Rotary, however, are striving all the time to make these Fairs better and better. This year there will seven in all including the final one on Sunday October 6th but work is already in hand on the event for next month, Sunday June 16th, which will see,

the appearance of the year from much-admired local Music Man, Chris Foster, whose dulcet tones and popular melodies will fill the air. As usual there will fast food and ice cream available to buy and also Bouncy Castle entertainment for the youngsters. To book a pitch and obtain full details of future events please contact FUNdraising Committee Chairman Bill Pierce on 01273 513162 – or simply come along and pay on the day.

Microphones in Action Towards the end of last year we donated £254 for microphones and leads to The Base, originally the booking office for the tennis courts at the Salts, now being used for the benefit of young people as a music practice venue and other youth related functions.

On Thursday 25 April we were invited to attend a rehearsal/practice session there by local band Riffz, and see the microphones in action. Musicians left to right are Oli White, Adam Goddard, Chaz Roe and Max Tully with vocalist Kristina Bradford reclining.

The Bluebell Walk For the first time the Rotary Club Seaford were given the opportunity to run the popular Arlington Bluebell Walk and Farm Trail, and for most of the members it was a new experience. As with most things in this country the weather dictates the public response, but despite the chilly weather and the slow appearance of the bluebells visitors were able to enjoy a spectacular display of white woodland anemones and farm trails. Our catering team was well supported with delicious cakes and help from many Rotary partners, and assisting magnificently with the other duties were cheerful Rotarians and other volunteers. Over two days we made around £850 for local charities and good causes, and we look forward to running the walk again in 2014 hoping for a full show of bluebells.

Running Commentary... How a runner sets a PB in a race is one of the most difficult to explain aspects of our sport. Comedians would say it’s easy, you just run quicker than before, but how is it really achieved? Common sense would suggest that a fairly flat course, a light (refreshing) wind, a modest temperature and being well-prepared create the perfect conditions for recording your best time for a particular race or distance. However, if that was the case, then setting a PB at the Hastings Half Marathon, for instance, would be highly unlikely, if only for the mean uphill parts that dominate the route, and should lead to a runner going at a much slower pace. But many runners defy that logic and run better than they have done over easier courses. This anomaly seems to happen regularly to runners over most distances too. So, what’s the magic formula?… or are there too many factors to take into account? Perhaps PBs are also influenced by how relaxed you’ve been in the three or four days prior to a race, or what you ate or drank during that time. Seaford Strider, Dave Dunstall, (photo) says that often it’s other runners who help him set a PB, either by him wanting to go quicker to avoid being overtaken by a

certain runner or chasing down someone who’s in front of him… and then trying to stay ahead. Fellow Strider, John Kingshott, achieves PBs through the enjoyment factor and the challenge of a new event or when he has to work a bit harder over a tough section of a race. He also believes that a flat course can sometimes dull the senses, making the legs inadvertently ‘switch off ’ and so prefers more demanding races. As someone who runs, wearing a GPS watch he regularly monitors his pace and time, and often runs even faster when he realises that he’s ahead of his estimated pace. The likelihood of a PB is probably also affected by your trainers still possessing the qualities that you bought them for, and even at the start line, there may be clues for what’s about to happen. You will feel at peace with the world, while at the same time, focused on the race and importantly, looking forward to it. You’ll be quietly confident and hopeful, and when the race begins, you’ll run relaxed, enjoying the camaraderie among fellow runners and soaking up the encouragement of the spectators as well as the spectacular scenery that you may be running through. Very soon, and without noticing it, you will have found a comfortable but strong running pace and it will feel effortless. Each runner you overtake will give you a buzz, which will then give you the energy boost to overtake the next person… and so on. The miles will fly by and you will be poetry in motion. You’ll be like the surfer who finds himself riding the perfect wave. Your pace will be strong and sustained, yet with a sense that you could still run faster. There may be pain but it fades, and you’ll finish the race fast, fresh and buoyant. So… was it the perfect wave? Maybe, but only until the next PB opportunity arises. Afterwards, when you begin to reflect on your PB, you may put it down to being just ‘one of those days’ when everything went right… and that it just happened. Meanwhile, the sense of satisfaction in setting another PB will be fair reward for all the efforts made, and should prompt thoughts of what you might be able to achieve in your next race. The Clinton Centre, Clinton Place A few years ago, having come together as Cross Way, a Local Ecumenical Partnership between the Seaford Methodist and United Reformed Churches, we set out to refurbish the United Reformed Church premises in Clinton Place. The vision was to create a Christian centre for outreach with facilities suitable for wider use by the community. To achieve this aim funding was sought. After many appeals, gifts and grants were received from the Keith Baker Trust, the Town Council, Seaford Rotary and Inner Wheel Clubs, the church congregation and many private individuals. Facilities to meet the requirements of the Disability Discrimination Act were required before some organisations and elected bodies could use the buildings. The original vision in terms of the buildings finally became reality with a Grand Official Opening by Councillor Linda Wallraven, Mayor of Seaford, on Saturday, 13 October 2012. All those present were greatly impressed by the new facilities. The Clinton Centre now boasts two large halls, Clinton and Blatchington and a small meeting room. There is a large, light and airy, well-equipped modern kitchen available for use. It is fitted with a modern cooking range and an automatic hot water boiler for teas and coffee. There is a large fridge freezer. The kitchen is stocked with complete sets of crockery cutlery and kitchen utensils, enough for serving over 100 people. Both the Ladies and Gents toilets are large, light and spacious. There is a separate modern up to date toilet for the disabled and also new private baby-changing facilities.

Clinton Hall, the larger of the two, is equipped with 140 modern stacking chairs and 14 folding tables. It is approximately 1200 square feet in area (40' x 30') with a stripped and sealed pine floor. It offers the possibility for many different types of usage with its excellent acoustics and flexible space. Blatchington Hall is a light and airy space approximately 700 square feet in area. It has a linoleum type floor and there is direct access via a hatch to the kitchen. It is equipped with a range of tables and chairs, and can seat about 70 people. There is level access from Broad Street North and ramp access for the disabled from Clinton Place. The Stafford Room, leading off the warmly carpeted entrance area and corridors, is the smallest of the three and has a fully carpeted floor. It offers a more enclosed and useful private area for small meetings or discussion groups. There is a large table around which can be seated approximately 10 people. The Clinton Centre welcomes visitors, and this can be arranged by prior arrangement with the Bookings Secretary. UNDERSTANDING MENTAL HEALTH

vigilant amygdala to trigger another panic attack to deal with the new ‘threat’.

PHOBIAS, PANIC ATTACKS AND POST-TRAUMATIC STRESS I hope this month’s article will further enhance understanding of these distressing but treatable conditions. Here is how it works.

Phobias start the same way and the amygdala makes associations with what was going on when a person first felt threatened, not all of which may be relevant. So, while it is understandable that someone who is attacked by a vicious dog may well develop a fear of dogs generally, it could equally be the case that someone develops a fear of broken glass because, on a previous occasion, when they had had a panic attack, there was broken glass lying near to where they collapsed. Agoraphobia develops when someone is too frightened of panic attacks even to leave the house.

The brain has an emotional alarm system designed to keep us safe. When people suffer from panic attacks, phobias or post-traumatic stress, it is because the system has gone into overdrive. What happens is this. There is a small, structure in the brain, known as the amygdala (Greek for almond, which is its shape), that has access to our emotional memories and learned responses. It evolved in the distant past and its job is to match new circumstances to what is already in the store and alert us to anything that previously represented a risk and might do so again. In the distant past, this might have been a movement or flash of colour that could have signified an approaching predator. The amygdala would then have triggered changes to help the body get ready to fight or flee the danger and pounding heart, racing pulse, quick, shallow breathing, etc. Now imagine this. A young woman, who has had a highly stressful day, is waiting in a long supermarket queue, worrying whether she’ll be out of the shop in time to catch the bus to school to collect her little girl. It is one pressure too many. The amygdala responds as if she is under threat and she starts to feel her heart pounding strangely and her breathing quickens. She becomes terrified that she is having a heart attack and that makes the symptoms escalate and her palms sweat; her chest feels as if it is bursting and she struggles to breathe. Soon she feels overwhelmed and may collapse or run out of the shop. The amygdala, fearful that this could happen again, files away the fact that there were bright lights and lots of people queuing when the ‘threat’ occurred. Then, when the woman is queuing in the post office the next day, the bright lights and queue may be sufficient for the over-

In the case of post-traumatic stress, someone who was in the back seat of a car when a collision occurred may find it frightening to travel in the back seat again but there may be other, unconscious, connections with the accident too, such as the smell of petrol. So the person may experience seemingly inexplicable panic when filling up their own car with petrol. Fortunately, human givens practitioners are taught a simple and effective way to deal with all these circumstances. If a traumatic memory is causing panic attacks, phobias or post-traumatic stress, they can use a powerful, painless visualisation procedure, known as the rewind technique, to take the emotion out of the memory and enable the memory of the event to be stored away as history, instead of as one that continues to intrude on the present. The memory remains, and always will remain, a deeply unpleasant one but no longer is it emotionally arousing. This method can work swiftly and reliably even in the most extreme of cases. Artist in Residence Shared Exhibition Arts@theCrypt

at Arts@theCrypt The Last Minute Artists Pop-up Gallery has been set up by a group of six artists who shared an exhibition at arts@thecrypt early in 2013. The group are inviting other artists and makers to participate in weekend pop-up galleries at the popular Seaford arts venue throughout the year, whenever there is a gap in the arts@thecrypt diary. Run on a voluntary basis for the benefit of artists and residents alike, the first of the pop-up events was held on 27 and 28 April, with twelve participating artists showing their work. The pop-up gallery attracted 240 people over the weekend and several pieces of art exchanged hands. The group hopes to help arts@thecrypt develop an integral and central role in the artistic and cultural life of Seaford by ensuring that it is open to the public at least every weekend for the sale of affordable art. Look out for the distinctive “Last Minute Artists Popup Gallery” banner outside the arts@thecrypt building at 23 Church Street, Seaford BN25 1HE. Email: lastminuteartists@ymail.com if you’d like to be a Last Minute Artist too!

23 Church Street Seaford 1st – 6th June. 10.30am – 4.30pm Seymour Jennings returns to the Crypt Gallery as Artist in Residence heading a shared exhibition a year after the first event, which proved to be a great success. He will be showing his unique style of finely detailed paintings and drawings with their often otherworldly dreamlike atmosphere and visitors will be welcome to see him creating a work and to discuss this and perhaps their own artistic adventures. Returning with Seymour are Keith Allfrey, who paints in acrylic and has been exploring abstract colours and shapes in landscape, Mike Bovington, producing fine photographic work on canvas and paper, M. Vivienne Lloyd, who works in Chinese Brush and watercolour, and Dawn Shelley Wells with her lively style, wide range of subject matter and experimentation in acrylic, watercolour and ink.

Two newcomers to the group are Stephen J Foster, producing striking watercolours, some depicting coastal scenes with exciting skies, and Bazza West from Framfield. Bazza is a mouth artist working in acrylic producing some Homemade Me With Love Available in a wide range of quality By fabrics amazing vibrant work in a very short space of time since homemade itemsAvailable including: in a wide range of quality fabrics taking up painting. ‘Edgelands’ by Ann Johnson Saturday 8th June to Thursday 20th June Tues - Sat 10.30am - 5pm, Sun 12 - 5pm, closed Mon. New paintings and drawings exploring the boundaries between the two practices. Subject matter is sourced from walks on the coastal ‘edgelands’ in autumn - full of regeneration and hope, where dried flowers and shrubs take on beautiful shapes and a delicacy of their own. For several years, Ann has worked with Anglesey poet Fiona Owen. Together with Meredith Andrea, Fiona has written a new collection of poems published this May. Some of the paintings in the exhibition directly relate to the poems in the book, copies of which will be available. It’s called A Screen of Brightness and is published by Cinnamon Press. Ann will be taking a ‘walk and talk’ through the exhibition on Sunday 16 June at 2.30pm. ‘Almost Gone’ by Ann Johnson

East Blatchington LectureS Our local MP Norman Baker attracted another large audience for his lecture on April 7th when he gave us a clear idea of the efforts and responsibilities he has since taking on the task of Transport Minister, and explaining the advantages and disadvantages involved. Questions asked by the audience were clearly and willingly answered, and he completed his visit by mingling with his constituents over a welcome cup of tea and cake. As I write we are busy preparing for our lecture on May 7th when Alan Walters, who was a leading light in the Channel Tunnel project from start to finish, will give his talk “Tunnel Vision - The French Connection”. More news of this next time. On June 4th the meanings and values of icons will be revealed by Dr. Andrew Mayes, which will give us a clearer idea of what they are all about. This a subject that many of us know little of and should prove to be extremely interesting. We shall then be honoured with a visit by award-winning Sussex crime writer Peter James on July 2nd, who has kindly consented to talk on his life as an author. His latest books will be on sale in the chapel during refreshments after the lecture, and he has agreed to sign any copies bought during the visit. He is a great supporter of the Sussex Police Force, who have promised to be strongly represented at the meeting, so don’t be put off if you see the odd squad car parked outside. This lecture will be given in St. Peters Church at 2.30pm. PLEASE NOTE: tickets for this special lecture will only be obtainable from Newberry Tully in Church Street, and will be on sale there from 10am on Monday June 3rd. Be early if you wish to avoid disappointment.

East Blatchington Lecture

Michelangelo Buonarroti By KAY Blackburn I was invited to one of the East Blatchington Lectures by Shirley Linsell, who has been organising these once-amonth lectures for the last three years and raising funds for the restoration of St Peter’s church roof. I attended the Michelangelo lecture with art historian Kay Blackburn as I had studied art history at A Level. The lecture held in St Peter’s church hall was full to capacity and began with an introduction and thanks of support by Shirley Linsell, who then introduced Kay. Kay gave her lecture with the aid of many detailed slides of sculptures and paintings and a hand-out illustrating the layout of the Sistine Chapel ceiling with a time-line of Michelangelo’s life. The first half of the lecture focused on his life from when he was born in Caprese in 1475 to 1505. During this period he lived and worked in Florence, Venice, Bologna and Rome and created sculptures such as the Pieta and Bacchus. At the age of 12 he learnt the art of fresco painting - water based pigments painted directly onto wet plaster - the technique that he used to paint the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel in Rome. Kay also talked about Michaelangelo’s most famous and classical marble sculpture, David, describing the beauty and perfection of this piece of work, which represents good over evil. After a short interval of tea and plenty of home-made cake (all included in the price of the ticket), the second part concentrated on his later life and his famous works, the Tomb of Pope Julius II and his masterpiece, the painted ceiling of the Sistine chapel, which took over four years to complete. Kay also described life in Italy and Rome, the reformation and made reference to Michelangelo’s contemporaries, Leonardo da Vinci and Raphael. I found Kay’s lecture extremely interesting, particularly as she used numerous slides to illustrate her talk. She provided a deep understanding of Michelangelo’s work which enabled the audience to gain a much greater appreciation of this artistic genius. Thank you Kay. Fran Tegg

Coastal Futures Group leads the way for Coastal Communities 2150 The Coastal Futures Group was formed in January 2012 and its volunteer members have been working hard ever since. The group guides the work of the Coastal Communities 2150 project as it raises awareness of long-term coastal climate change in Newhaven, Seaford, Lewes and the Lower Ouse and what people can do about it. Their efforts join with those of groups in Kent, Hampshire, Belgium and the Netherlands where there are communities experiencing the same exposure to change. You can stay up to date with group through its quarterly news letter. The next edition is published in June. The group’s 15 members live and work in the area. Their long history of involvement in the community as organisers, educators, councillors, residents and conservationists is a vital resource for the project team from the Environment Agency. The Coastal Futures Group identified the key audiences for the project and advises on the resources the project needs. As a result of this successful collaboration, Coastal Communities 2150 has produced a programme of exciting awarenessraising events for 2013. Each of these events is a great chance to find out more about coastal climate change and participate in a community vision of long-term adaptation. The

project has an interactive model of the lower Ouse valley showing the effect of sea-level rise. This shall be on display on Sunday 23 June at the Linklater Pavilion during the Lewes Railway Lands Wildlife Trust Festival of Water. There are also a range of competitions for art and design and financial awards available for innovative approaches to coastal climate change. The next step for the Coastal Futures Group is to produce a community-owned vision and action plan for adaptation. This innovative report will be a detailed and ambitious statement of how the community can adapt to forecast impacts of coastal climate change up to the year 2150. This is supported by a clear-sighted practical plan of how to achieve such an ambitious outcome. Work begins in June with the production of 6 climate change visualisations to help guide discussion. There will be several community vision events during the Summer and autumn allowing everyone an opportunity to participate. The final documents will be completed in November. If you would like to get involved then please contact the Coastal Communities 2150 Engagement Officer Paul Costelloe (cc2150.newhaven@environmentagency.gov.uk) or call 01903 703 806.

BUTTERFLIES OF SEAFORD & SURROUNDING AREA June The middle of summer on the downs around Seaford brings so much natural beauty with wild flowers, birds singing, bees buzzing and butterflies fluttering, there is nothing better than to just sit quietly and soak it all in. The Marbled White butterflies start flying during June and when they first emerge they are very evident with their black and white patterned wings. Many butterflies rely on camouflage to keep hidden from predators; however, it appears that the Marbled White is obnoxious to birds which protects it whilst it is so easily seen. The Marbled White numbers continue to build up and they can be seen throughout July until midway through August. Almost anywhere on the downs this butterfly can be seen but the meadow between Birling Gap and Belle Tout Wood is a particularly good place

to see them where they can be found nectaring on flowers such as knapweed and field scabious. The most common butterfly in Britain, and Sussex, is the Meadow Brown; these butterflies also start to fly in June. This species is common on downland, heathland, woodland and even gardens. They also have a very long flight season with butterflies emerging throughout the rest of the summer right up to early October. Occasionally clouds of these butterflies can be put up by walking through long grass in meadows. Look out for them too on bramble flowers that are a favourite nectaring source for this species. The Large Skipper is a butterfly of rough grassland and woodland rides where the males can be very territorial. Like all skippers they can be confused with moths as they are quite stout and hairy and their flight is very rapid. This golden brown butterfly has large black eyes that look like a pair of headphones. They often perch on a sunny leaf basking with their forewings at a slightly different angle to their hindwings, which is very distinctive. The rarest butterfly we have nearby is the Small Pearl Bordered Fritillary. The only site for this butterfly in the South East of England is in woodland near Laughton. This is on a nature reserve owned and managed by Butterfly Conservation. This beautiful butterfly starts to emerge just before the end of May and then can be seen throughout June nectaring on bramble flowers and bugle. This is another butterfly that had declined in numbers enormously in recent years but hopefully due to the work and commitment by Butterfly Conservation it will continue to fly in Sussex for many years to come.

Remember to check out the Sussex Butterfly Conservation website for details of how you can help our wild butterflies as well as recent sightings at www.sussex-butterflies.org.uk Bob Eade

Seaford poet Peter Martin’s third volume of poetry, ‘Kindred Spaces’, published on l8th May, is inspired by the landscape of one of the most revered and emblematic areas of the South Downs National Park. It includes fifty new poems and is illustrated by eight stunning illustrations by Seaford artist, Sarah Gregson. Both the poems and illustrations present ‘portraits’ of particular moments, at a particular time of year and in specific places, mostly within six or so miles of Seaford – an area that includes beautiful landscapes of chalk downs and seacliffs and the largely undeveloped Cuckmere valley, all with rich and fascinating histories. Inevitably, the natural world is the main inspiration for the poems but dramatic evidence of ancient human presence such as the Long Man of Wilmington and villages such as Jevington, Litlington and Alciston also feature, as does Seaford town centre and promenade. Written over a three-year period, the poems are the product of many hours walking, sitting and standing and staring, exploring how the rich concoction of nature, season, landscape, weather and history impacts on emotions and imagination. They demonstrate that given time and attention, places can change from being somewhere we visit or pass through, into spaces we engage with and feel an affinity with - our ‘kindred spaces.’ Sarah Gregson’s paintings, currently being snapped up wherever they are displayed, reflect the smallness of people against the grandeur of the local landscape and are inspired in style by vintage railway posters. ‘Kindred Spaces’ follows on from Peter’s well-received second book of poetry ‘Ghost Music’, published in 2010. Both are available from Seaford Post Office and other local outlets, price £8.50 or direct from Seacroft Arts, 38 Fairways Road, Seaford, BN25 4EN (please add £1 for p and p). Email: redfox.martin@btinternet.com. For further information about the artist’s work see her web site, www.withaviewto.com or email her at sarah@withaviewto.com.

SEAFORD MARTELLO ROTARY CLUB SPONSORED WALK Seaford Martello Rotary Club organised a sponsored walk to raise funds for the Kent, Surrey & Sussex Air Ambulance and on Sunday 5th May about 40 people set off from the Martello Fields in glorious sunshine. The route took them along the seafront towards the A259, then up into the old village of Bishopstone, heading on towards the South Downs Way and then descending into Alfriston, then along the banks of the Cuckmere River to Exceat and finally over Seaford Head, returning back to the start point, a total of 13.5 miles. The club had also organised its “Tavern in the Tent” which was on hand to provide muchneeded refreshment for those taking part and their supporters.

Friends of Tide Mills Our April meeting was in glorious sunshine and included 15 volunteers with four very welcome new members. We managed to collect 17 bags of assorted rubbish. It was lovely to see some of the vegetated shingle plants starting to emerge at last and in a few weeks’ time the whole area behind the beach should be a sea of colour once more - always worth seeing and appreciating. Also spotted was a pair of Ringed Plovers, obviously intending to breed if possible. We have a couple of breeding warning signs in place still and if visitors could avoid the area between the signs this would be much appreciated. Our next meeting is on Sunday 16th June, always the third Sunday of the month, from10am to 12 noon, meeting at the beach end of the old village road. As always all are very welcome to join our little band who help us keep this special place as it is and cared for, for everybody’s gentle enjoyment. Thank you. Jim Skinner, Chair of the FOTM. A Roaring Success For Aladdin!

Arkwell services

The award winning Seaford Musical Theatre Juniors company received rave reviews from the audiences of last week’s show ‘Aladdin’, written and directed by Paula Woolven, and performed at the Barn Theatre, Seaford.

Painting & decorating both internal/external l

The volunteer-run community group show had a cast of 38 young people, who come from 15 different local schools and colleges, a mix that director, Paula, believes is part of the success of the organisation. Paula said “there is no ‘pecking order’ or problems transferring from school time to ‘out of school’ activities. The children have met and bonded through the group and they really look forward to seeing each other once a week for rehearsals. In a safe, fun environment their confidence has grown tremendously through performing and I am very proud of them all.” Local comedy magician and SMTJ Chaperone, Sam Jones, thrilled the audiences with magic tricks

whilst performing as the Genie Kazim. SMTJ welcomed guests from local organisations that have supported them including NP&S Lions, Seaford Rotary Club, the Royal Society of St George and the O2 ThinkBig project. They also held a raffle and donated £100 to Haydn’s Wish in memory of Haydn Wileman, who was known to many of the cast and crew. Photos: Henchmonkey (Danny Woolven) plots with evil Abanazar (Josh Henry) and Princess Balroubadour (Tyanna Griffiths) sings to the villagers.

THE Mercread Youth Centre Now that the summer term is in full swing we can look back on our recent sporting successes over the last few months. In particular we would like to mention our support for and involvement in Tackle Homophobia Project. The partnership project, including The Justin Campaign that was set up in memory of Justin Fashanu, Britain’s first openly gay professional footballer, seeks to challenge homophobia on and off the football pitch, sending a message that discrimination of any form is not acceptable. This project runs in Seaford and works with young people across the district to engage them in positve healthy activities, alongside educational workshops and intervention to raise knowledge and understanding around homophobia and its effects.

We have seen continued success with the project, in the last year engaging with over 850 young people in a variety of settings including in schools, youth clubs and at regular football sessions held at The Downs Leisure Centre, Seaford.

Recently, one of the teams from Seaford made it through to the final of a national competition. The Tackle Homophobia under-16s represented the county in the Gillette 5-a-side Tournament in Manchester after triumphing in the south region round of the competition in Basingstoke. The team had progressed from the Sussex round of the competition, organised in partnership with Sussex Clubs for Young People, which was held in Seaford and attended by more than 100 young people.

MUSICAL SHOWTIME

The project has also played in other events including a match at The Dipping Pan, Lewes against a wellestablished Brighton youth team resulting a well earned draw. The under 19’s team also took part in the Football for Peace vs Homophobia event held at the University of Brighton, coming second in their group against university students and lecturers. Mercread Youth Centre is proud to be a part of projects in the wider community for young people, and is committed to supporting provision both in and outside the Centre.

What a marvellous evening of outstanding music and pleasure was given on Saturday 27th April. The organist for the Musical Showtime presentation was Brett Wales, playing a Wersi Louvre 3 manual organ. The full house enjoyed a packed programme with music from Big Band, easy listening, classical, Rock and Roll to film themes. Musical Showtime is run by a super couple, Ivor and Val Lawrence, and the event is held locally at Seaford Head Community College, Arundel Road. Tickets are £6 including refreshments plus a raffle with excellent prizes is drawn at the end of the first half. It is a recommended evening of entertainment, very local and reasonably priced. Everyone is welcome and it’s a great event especially for groups, clubs and organisations. The next evening concert will be in July. Please contact Ivor and Val for further details on 01273 512771 or visit www.musicalshowtime.co.nr where past artists can be seen and heard. Rita Evans

Mockford’s the Blindmakers Specialists in quality handmade vertical and roller blinds

The Industrial estate, GREEN STREET, EASTBOURNE, BN21 1QN OPEN 9.30PM TO 1PM MON TO SAT. Telephone: 01323 417518 So many of Jean and Harvey Mockford’s Seaford customers recommend them or place new orders, that they do not need to advertise, however many are unaware that the ten year lease on the shop in Sutton Road has expired. As their customers in Seaford are too numerous to contact individually, this notice of their address and telephone number will appear in the Seaford Scene each month. Nothing else has changed, they still regard themselves as Seaford’s Blindmakers albeit based 15 minutes away in Eastbourne, where their headquarters have been for more than a quarter of a century. To telephone for after-sales service, or to arrange for Jean to call to estimate for new blinds (that are guaranteed for 20 years) or if you wish to visit the showroom... take the 259 from Seaford, on approaching Eastbourne go straight ahead at the traffic lights, then by the Tally Ho pub turn left into Green Street and the industrial estate is up a driveway opposite the first bus shelter.

Flower Festival A Flower Festival is to be held by St Peter’s Church, East Blatchington on the first weekend of July. The plan is to have something for everyone, whatever their age. The flowers, of course, will take centre stage. But there will also be various fascinating exhibits in the church hall, including a history of the church itself, which dates back 800 years, and of Blatchington Court School, whose chapel was where the hall now stands. The Seaford Monumental Inscription Group has completed an exhaustive investigation of the graves and their inscriptions in the churchyard, and will have a 100page book on sale at the weekend. Further history will be provided by Kevin Gordon, a man who knows so much about the town and its past.

The theme of the festival will be St Peter, and the church will borrow the Fisherman statue from its sister church, St Andrew’s, Bishopstone, for the occasion. In St Peter’s Church there will be a pause for a brief prayer every two hours, and also a Prayer Tree where the public can attach their own prayers. A similar tree featured at the church’s hugely successful Open Day last year, and was a great attraction. The basic aim of this event is to entice people to set foot in the church and meet its parishioners. There will be plenty of stewards to answer questions, and refreshments will be served in the church hall.

The dates: the festival will be on Friday and Saturday, July 5th and 6th, from 10.30am to 5.30pm, and also on Sunday July 7th, from 2pm to 5pm.

Seaford Kurlers I am writing this article on a beautiful warm sunny day in May. I hope that the sunshine lasts for a long time. It can rain at night time so that the water companies will be happy and not yell about a drought! Seaford Kurlers have still to go on their day trip to Portsmouth. The new Mary Rose exhibition should now be open. All we need is really lovely weather. In the next edition I will let you all know how the day was. As I write, the Seahaven Lionesses will have their annual tournament on Saturday 18th May at the Downs Leisure Centre and the Seaford Kurlers will be there to do the scoring for them and act as impartial referees. The kurling club itself flourishes with good attendances - we are quite a mix of characters which is clear to see when we take an entertaining halfway break. If you do not know what the game is all about and you would like to find out and widen your social circle at the same time - why not come along and give it a try? We are an ESDA group (East Sussex Disability Association) and as such we are able to cater for people with disabilities. With the various aids that we have, we all compete on an equal playing field. If your curiousity does get the better of you, we can be found every Tuesday at the Downs Leisure Centre from 2pm until 4pm in the sports hall. Your first visit is free and thereafter the weekly cost is £2.50 and an annual membership fee of £5. For more details contact June Wood at 7 Landsdown Road, Seaford. SEAFORD CHORAL SOCIETY CONCERT

Saturday 27th April 2013 St Leonard’s Church, Seaford The Society’s Spring Concert had all the appearance of a delightful sandwich. Imaginative programming had bracketed Haydn’s Little Organ Mass, dating from circa. 1775, and Rutter’s Requiem, composed in 1985, around a recital by the soprano, Susanna Fairbairn. The Exceat Players and the choir were conducted by Sion Parry and were accompanied by Nicholas Houghton at the organ. The singers displayed enthusiasm and commitment in their performance of the Haydn and Rutter compositions, and, although these smallscale pieces are separated in style and content by some two centuries, their differing demands were adequately satisfied. John Rutter’s Requiem is not a conventional liturgical setting, but rather a personal reflection of life and death themes. The general air of tranquil meditation was effectively captured by the performers, who were joined by Miss Fairbairn, and their rendering of the ‘Out of the Deep’ and ‘Pie Jesu’ sections was particularly moving.

It says much of the standing of the Seaford Choral Society that it can attract, on the one hand, established soloists such as Dame Felicity Lott and Matthew Rose to perform with it, while at the same time providing a platform for aspiring artists such as Miss Fairbain. However, the Society is at present suffering a shortage of tenors and basses, but in spite of this, the gentlemen were able to make a suitable contribution to these proceedings. It is to be hoped that this shortfall will be remedied by the time of their next concert on 30 November which will feature Mozart’s Vesperae Solennes de Confessore, his Coronation Mass and Gerald Finzi’s For St. Cecilia. Amfortas A retiring collection in support of St. Wilfrid’s Hospice raised £447.50.

Miss Fairbairn’s recital encompassed Schubert’s Ave Maria, two songs by Roger Quilter and Cesar Franck’s Panis Angelicus, in all of which she was accompanied by Mr Houghton on the piano. She concluded with Mendelssohn’s very beautiful Hear My Prayer, in which she was joined by the choir. This piece, which includes the famous ‘O for the wings of a dove’, was performed with great feeling and the audience were most appreciative of the efforts of both soloist and choir. Miss Fairbairn’s soprano has a dark velvety tinge which suggests that the operatic stage may be where her future lies.

The society’s next concert in St. Leonard’s Church, Seaford will be on November 30th 2013. They will perform Vesperae Solennes de Confessore and the Coronation Mass by W. A. Mozart, together with For St. Cecelia by Gerald Finzi. The Society’s AGM will be held in St. Leonard’s Church Hall, Seaford on Monday, July 29th at 7pm. The Society is actively seeking Basses and Tenors to join this very friendly group. No audition is required. For details visit: www.seaford-choral-society.com

The Base Report 2012-2013 Received financial donations: £250 from Sussex Police Property Fund, £1400 from local businesses in support of our Live Band Event, £257 from Seaford Rotary for two microphones, stands and leads. Equipment donations: CD/ipod mixer station from Royal Society of St George, Electric Piano from Paul Franklin House clearance company,. The Base successfully ran an outside event in September at The Salts with four local bands performing that was well attended and everyone had a great time. We also made our presence felt at the late-night shopping at Christmas by having the Muppets playing and dancing to festive music. Later it turned into a small street party and The Base really engaged with the younger community by encouraging them to get up and have a go on the drums (once Animal had finally worn himself out). We will be hosting (weather permitting) more live performances from local bands in the school summer holidays. We have several regular bands that hire the facilities for their rehearsals and this is starting to snowball as more bands are approaching The Base for this purpose. This is allowing youths under 16 to use The Base for free to rehearse with their bands or groups. The Base has several youth groups busting to use The Base if it had toilet facilities, something we are currently working on to make it a more hireable building. Just recently a youth group has formed in the town to meet and discuss politics for the young and future of politics. Who knows we may even produce a future prime minister? The Base has over 1160 friends on Facebook. You can follow us on Twitter or just check out our website: Facebook.com/baseseaford www.thebase-seaford.co.uk twitter@thebaseseaford email: thebase@live.com

New Furniture Recycling Warehouse for Newhaven The charity Age UK East Sussex, formerly Age Concern East Sussex, has brought a new lease of life to an old boat factory in Newhaven. Raising money to provide services for local older people, they have opened a Furniture Recycling Warehouse, selling secondhand and nearly new furniture, bric a brac and electrical items. Based within Cantell’s Boatyard, off Robinson Road, the warehouse is packed full of bargain beds, superb sofas and amazing furniture at rock-bottom prices. Charlotte Kelly, the new warehouse manager, said “It’s wonderful what the kind people of Newhaven and surrounding areas have donated to us. We have had everything from nearly new leather three-piece suites to fridge freezers and some lovely antique items too.” The warehouse is open to the public seven days a week from 10am through to 5pm. There is ample parking and they even offer free collection if you wish to donate furniture items. The warehouse address is: The Age UK East Sussex Furniture Warehouse, Units B&C The Old Shipyard, Cantell’s Boatyard, Robinson Road, Newhaven, East Sussex, BN9 9BL. It’s just off the Piddinghoe road, after the Jolly Boatman pub.You can contact them on 01273 646 800.

Creators of Fine Kitchens Bedrooms & Home Studies

Our Design We provide the same attention to detail for all our kitchens, regardless of price. We prepare floor plans and elevations, so you can see exactly what we suggest. Then we meet again, go over the plans and discuss the layout and price. How We Work...Our Visit Bianca or Malcolm will visit your home and look at the layout, the style and the individual character of your room. We will measure, take photographs, sketch details but most of all we will listen. This is where you tell us exactly what you want and how you want to live in the room we create. Our Build Once you are happy with the plans we will ask for a deposit and begin building your kitchen. We will arrange every detail of our part of the installation or co-ordinate with your builder. Our installers are in-house craftsmen, renowned for good craftsmanship. We can adapt any unit or door back at our workshop. Remember the kitchen is made just for you, so we give it the attention it deserves. Our Finish When the last piece has been fitted we will check every detail to make sure we have met your expectations. call it pride, as we love to see our ideas realised. But in the end it’s your idea, your design, your kitchen. we just bring it to life!
