Welcome Welcome to the May issue of Seaford Scene. It’s my favourite month of the year, with warmer sunny days (hopefully), clear blue skies and pretty blossom on the trees. Sadly only one bank holiday this month but we will all make up for it next month! The theatre is in vogue this month with a production of ‘Hobsons Choice’ by Seaford Little Theatre, page 38 and ‘Cash on Delivery’ by Meeching Amateur Dramatics, page 54. Newhaven Fort presents ‘The Angel and the Fiend’, as part of the Brighton Festival along with an exhibition set-design by Cinecity for ‘Hangover Square’, with period props on loan from Seaford Museum. Enjoy your May!

An Extraordinary End to the Mayor’s Mad March Marathon After a month full of fundraising activity, The Mayor’s Mad March, in aid of the charity WAVES, has come to an end. It has been a very busy month for all involved, but a very worthwhile one, which has raised around £4,000 for the Seaford charity. The Mad March Marathon has seen collaboration from local businesses and organisations, as well as the WAVES volunteers, the local community and, of course, the Mayor herself. Amongst a diverse range of events, fundraising has been held in various forms, including a charity football match held by Seaford Football Club, a quiz night held by the Lionesses association, and events held by organisations such as Micklefield School, Seaford Horticultural Society and Seaford Literary Club. The M&Co Fashion Show, raising over £500 on the night alone, was a very special evening, seeing the Mayor and the Chairman of WAVES, Richard Plowman, modelling on the catwalk! The Mayor’s Ball was also a huge success, featuring a raffle and auction, and raising over £900. Also held last month was the Young Mayor’s Awards, where WAVES’ own Lydia won the Volunteer of the Year award. Alongside all the fundraising efforts of the March Marathon, WAVES held a non-fundraising Mad Hatters’ Tea Party and Fun Day for local families. With appearances from costumed Alice in Wonderland characters, numerous craft opportunities, story time and even a magician, the afternoon was a great success. The event attracted around 150 people in total to enjoy the fun and watch the presentation of a WAVES cake for the Mayor, in recognition of her work in aid of the charity. The amount raised during Mayor’s Mad March Marathon was well above expectations. A great deal of hard work was needed and it is thanks to the contributions of local businesses, organisations, volunteers and the Mayor that the events were so successful.

Sporting Legacy Boost for Wave Leisure Updated facilities for Seaford after £50,000 investment. Wave Leisure has secured £50,000 of Olympic legacy funding from Sport England’s Inspired Facilities Fund. The Inspired Facilities Fund is part of the £135 million Places People Play legacy programme that is bringing the magic of a home Olympic and Paralympic Games into communities across the country. Every sports facility that receives funding will carry the London 2012 Inspire mark – celebrating the link to the Games. The project will extend the small multi-use studio at the Downs Leisure Centre in Seaford, East Sussex, meaning that more people will be able to play more sports at the enlarged facility. Sport England’s Chair, Richard Lewis, said: “This investment will create a fantastic sporting legacy for Seaford. This fund has really hit the mark with sports

For hundreds of clubs and tens of thousands of people, 2012 will be the year their local sports facilities got better.” Peter Crowley, Managing Director of Wave Leisure said: “We are delighted that this Inspired Facilities funding will enable us to extend the types of activities we offer local residents as well providing dedicated facilities that are suitable for all sectors of the community to use for their physical activity initiatives.” The project is one of 350 local community sports groups that have been offered a total of £17.4 million in Olympic legacy funding through the Inspired Facilities Fund. The investments announced today will breathe new life into tired facilities that can be unattractive to sports participants, or difficult to maintain and run. Grants have also been offered to convert existing buildings into venues that are suitable for grassroots sport and allow local clubs to buy the facilities they use.

Minister for Sport and the Olympics, Hugh Robertson MP, said: “We want to use the Olympics and Paralympics this summer to inspire a generation to get involved in sport across the country. This is why as a part of the £135 million Places People Play legacy programme we invited community sports clubs to apply for funding to upgrade their facilities.”

British Youth Council awards won by the Seaford Young Mayors Scheme The Seaford Town Council Young Mayors Scheme and the Seaford Young Mayors Awards have won the British Youth Council Innovation Award and Inspiring Project Award as part of their Youth On Board scheme. The scheme celebrates organisations and projects that support youth participation in innovative and exciting ways and marks the fantastic achievements that can happen because young people are supported to get involved. The Inspiring Project Award recognises efforts made by projects to engage young people and give them a voice and the Innovation Award celebrates new ideas and practices that have made a real difference to how organisations work with young people. Seaford Town Council started the Young Mayor scheme

Rental Villa in Paphos, CYPRUS

in 2009 with the first young Mayor of Seaford, Oscar Hardy. Ellie Homan was the second young Mayor and the current Young Mayor, Maddie Jay, is about to hand over the medal of office to her Deputy, Amy Gough. The scheme encourages young people to become more involved in their town, to understand the issues of local young people and to represent these views to the Council and other groups and organisations. All of the Young Mayors and their Deputies have been involved in local projects including the skate park, base art work, emergency services awareness, Seaford Youth Forum and most recently helped to secure funding for the ‘all ages’ green gym equipment currently being installed in the Salts recreation park. They held their second annual Awards Evening for young people last week, which was sponsored by the Keith Baker Charitable Trust. The incoming Seaford Young Mayor, Amy Gough, and her newly elected Deputy, Georgia Colyer, will be setting their objectives for 2012/13 shortly and would like to hear from other young people in Seaford with their views and comments. They can be contacted through the Seaford Town Council Facebook or Twitter page, email admin@seafordtowncouncil.gov.uk or telephone 01323 894870. Fine Dining and Wine at the Hostellerie de la Riviere, France

Seaford Scene has teamed up with Victoria Travel (Sussex) Ltd to offer you a wonderful trip to France where you can enjoy a 4/5 course gourmet lunch with red and white wines at the beautiful Hostellerie de la Riviere plus more food and drinks en-route! Our day starts on board our 36-seater executive diner coach with Bucks Fizz and Danish pastries served on the journey to Folkestone. On arrival at the Eurotunnel Terminal, there may be time for a short break before boarding the train, then coffee and biscuits are served on the coach while travelling through the tunnel. On arrival in Calais, we make a short journey to the Hostellerie de la Riviere just outside Boulogne and weather permitting we will be served a glass of champagne and aperitifs in the garden before going through to the restaurant. Lunch will be a minimum of four courses (chef has a habit of adding one or two!) served with a different red or white wine with each course. Coffee with Petits-fours complete the delightful relaxing lunch. If time allows, we will stop at the Auchan

Hypermarket, giving us the opportunity to stock up on French wine, cheeses etc before travelling back to Calais. There should be time for a short break at the Eurotunnel Terminal before boarding the train for our return journey. Once on the train, a supper of French bread, paté and cheese, together with a glass of wine will be served to complete the day. Come and join me for some ‘Haute Cuisine’ on 14th August 2012 for only £99! Bon Appetit! Fran Tegg, Editor, Seaford Scene.

SEAHAVEN BRANCH ‘THE ROYAL SOCIETY OF ST GEORGE’ MAKES USE OF ITS SURPLUS CASH! Following the successful presentation of equipment to the Seaford Life Guards in February, the Seahaven Branch of ‘The Royal Society of St George’ has gone on to make two other valuable contributions to worthwhile causes. A presentation of £200 was made to Councillor Linda Wallraven, the Mayor of Seaford towards her ‘Mad

March Marathon’, a fund-raising month for her charity, which is WAVES. This was made at a branch luncheon held at the Inn on the Park at Deanlands. Following this, a presentation was made to South Heighton Village of badges for use in their Jubilee Street Party, which promises to be ‘a right royal knees up’, in June! The next major event for the branch was the St George’s Day celebration on Monday 23rd April, where members and guests joined a special church service at St Andrew’s Church in Alfriston followed by a formal dinner in the nearby Dean’s Place Hotel. The Lord Lieutenant and many local civic leaders joined in with the celebration of the day. The Chairman of the Branch, Bob Peedle MBE, said “It is very satisfying when we are able to use our spare cash to help other organisations in our area. We have an enjoyable time anyway accumulating this money, which is usually gained from the raffles organised by committee member Maeve Mabey, which are held at our monthly functions. St George’s Day, being England’s National Day, is especially important to us as one of our aims is to encourage its observance and celebration by everyone.”

Enquires for membership should be directed to the Chairman on 01323 899985. Top: President Don Mabey hands over a cheque to Councillor Linda Wallraven as the Seahaven Branch’s contribution to her Mad March Marathon fund-raising in aid of Waves. Below: (l-r) Angela Cole and Sophy Thorpe from the South Heighton committee and Margarita Scarfe and Ann Abbott from St George, spread out some of the Jubilee badges for inspection.

Green Village

Trading Sustainability and Seaford ‘A cross between a studio, a gift shop and a gallery’ is how Seaford sculptor Jo Allen describes Green Village Trading, which opened at The Little Shop, 6 The High Street on 21st April.

Caricatures By Lesley Harvey The ideal Birthday, Anniversary present or just to make a friend laugh! One image on A4 framed £39. Extra images £20 each. All I need is a clear photo and a few details.

The reality is a tiny room which houses Jo’s ongoing sculpture work in one corner with a riot of local arts, crafts and literature covering every other available surface. The idea first occurred to Jo in 2008 when she was described as an ‘environmental artist’ following her summer exhibition, ‘On Seaford Bay’. Since then, having completed an MSc in advanced environmental and energy studies, she feels a little more qualified to comment on arts and the environment. “The shop is as much a concept as a retail outlet”, explains Jo. “The key to reducing the use of fossil fuels is to manufacture and trade locally which, in the case of gift purchases, is so easily satisfied by the incredible wealth of creative talent here in Sussex.” Along with the work of more traditional and wellknown local artists, Green Village Trading also aims to showcase something special for every taste and every budget and is always looking for new talent to represent.

3 FACTS

• The majority of gifts currently purchased in the U.K. have travelled in excess of 20,000 miles from creation to destination. • The majority of these gifts are manufactured from, or packaged in, non-recyclable plastics. • Fossil fuels are a finite and rapidly diminishing resource.

2 OPINIONS

• Consumerism is rampant and impersonal; there is too much “stuff” in the world. • A handmade or personalised gift is particularly precious.

1 PROMISE

• We showcase beautiful and original gifts created by local artists, authors and makers and everything we stock has been handcrafted in Sussex using recycled or sustainable resources.

SUSSEX roamability go Rambling in Nyman's Park With the early arrival of spring, the countryside looked glorious and when we visited Nyman's Park it was spectacular. Masses of daffodils in all their varieties bloomed in drifts throughout the park. Trees of magnolia and camellias set us gasping and there were even early bluebells and rhododendrons in flower despite it being only 25th March!

Buckland Photographic

In this spacious park we discovered the ruin of the old house, which remains beautiful. The carefree atmosphere of this park is good for children to roam and play in. Our group had prebooked the park buggy a powered vehicle which holds about 6 passengers and was driven by a knowledgeable National Trust guide. The ride lasted about an hour of relaxed touring through woodland and was full of interest.

The Alzheimer’s Society has argued that money wasted on sedative drugs should be spent on training care home staff to deliver good quality dementia care. Research has shown that anti-psychotics have minimal benefit and drastically increase the risk of medical complications, leaving people with dementia robbed of their quality of life. At Clifden House we reduce the use of all unnecessary and harmful medication, allowing our residents to lead a full and active life in a purpose built environment where the care team are able to offer the assistance that they need.

Louise Pye accepted the cheque and thanked the club on behalf of H4H and re-iterated the charities mission statement: “It’s about ‘the blokes’, our men and women of the armed forces. It’s about Derek, a rugby player who has lost both his legs, it’s about Carl whose jaw is wired up so he can only drink through a straw. It’s about Richard who was handed a mobile phone as he lay on a stretcher so he could say goodbye to his wife. They are just blokes but they are our blokes; they are our heroes. We want to help our heroes.” Photo: At the presentation, Len Fisher handing over the cheque to Louise Pye, volunteer for Help for Heroes

On Sunday 25th March a cheque for £5,000 was handed over to Ms Louise Pye, East Sussex Volunteer for Help for Heroes after a number of fundraising events held at the club throughout the past year. Past Club Captain Len Fisher said, “It’s been a humbling experience collecting for Help for Heroes – members have been so generous for such a worthy cause. We have had golfers colouring their hair pomegranate and raising £1,200, joint charity golf days with the Seahaven Lionesses, race nights and countless raffles”.

St John Ambulance Volunteers Off to Uganda At the end of March, two young members of the Seahaven Division of St John Ambulance, Kayleigh Matthews and Mathew Templeman, both aged 18, left for the ‘experience of a lifetime’. They have gone to spend five months working with the small independent charity Hands for Hope - Uganda, using their firstaid skills they have learnt at St John in the slum area surrounding Kampala. They will be helping in a nursery, teaching school children and working in a hospital/ medical clinic, caring for those who are very sick. They have had to raise almost £8,000 to pay for the trip. Their fund-raising activities have included making and selling cakes, having stalls at car-boot sales and running a Christmas Fayre. They have also received generous donations from both the NP&S Lions and the Seahaven Lioness Club. Part of their salaries have also been put towards paying for this venture. Kayleigh works as a nursery nurse at the Blue Door Nursery, in Seaford and Matthew works for GP Joinery in Newhaven. Everyone who knows them wishes them well as they begin their experience of living in Uganda, which no doubt will change their lives forever.

Mystery Seaford artist Colour woodcuts by a Seaford artist whose work hasn’t been exhibited for more than 70 years will go on display at the Towner Gallery in Eastbourne at the end of May. Eric Slater, who lived in East Albany Road for more than 30 years remains something of a mystery. But, following an appeal in February’s Seaford Scene, local writer James Trollope has found out more about the artist who, in the 1930s, had an international reputation. About ten of his prints, many of local scenes, will be hung alongside works by more famous artists including Eric Ravilious, Edward Bawden and John Piper. “It’s great that Eric Slater’s finally getting the recognition he deserves even though it comes nearly 50 years after his death,” said Mr Trollope who has spent more than a year researching his life and hopes eventually to produce a catalogue of his prints. The exhibition at the Towner gallery will continue until November 2012.

He helped us choose what would suit our home best from a vast number of different colours and styles of wood, together with deciding the type of handles. He was very knowledgeable and gave us a very competitive price. The standard of his workmanship was excellent and we are thrilled with the end result. We can't recommend him highly enough and his experience and expertise in being able to do so many things means we will definately be calling on him again."

Short Story

The OPPORTUNITY by Alan Morton He had bumped into me as we both joined the funnel of humanity trying to negotiate the ticket barriers at Victoria underground station. I knew it was him; even after all these years, I just knew, but I suppose I had to make certain. Looking straight at me, I could see that look in his eyes from so many years ago which I had hated so much. He wouldn’t recognise me of course, why should he? I was of no significance. I had not indelibly marked his early teenage years or made his life at school a misery. No, he wouldn’t know me, but if he had a birth mark on the back of his left hand, then I would know him…. for sure, John Hamer, or Hammer, as he was called for reasons more obvious at the time. He was shabbily dressed in a grubby brown mackintosh, and I followed him as he went through the ticket barrier towards the Victoria Line. The throng fanned out to negotiate the barriers, then came together again as they channelled their way towards the escalator. He was a couple of steps ahead of me and, it would appear, in no hurry, keeping to the right as others with more pressing engagements descended the stairs to the left. His left hand clutched a Metro newspaper and I tried to see the back of his hand more clearly. As we alighted from the escalator, he transferred the paper to his right hand and I saw what I had expected. It had faded over the years but it was discernible for anybody looking for it; the birth mark on the back of his left hand! Now I was sure that the man only a metre away from me had shared time at the same school as I in the 1960s. He was responsible for the slight crook in my nose, it having been broken by Hammer’s right fist for refusing to part with my dinner money in October 1964. I remember the time vividly; I was off school for ten days and it coincided with the Tokyo Olympics, so I spent my recuperation watching the events on the TV; not that I told anybody what really happened of course. I said I had clashed heads playing football up the park, being too scared of what Hammer might do if I dobbed him in it, and I spent the time off school dreading going back for fear of whatever else he may have in store for me. He and his sycophantic entourage were relentless in their hedonistic endeavours to ensure their status of playground enforcers was never in doubt. I wasn’t singled out of course; I was one of many who suffered at the hands of the most notorious of bully boys at Milton Street Secondary Modern.

36

For attacks from behind he favoured the boot in the lumber region or a karate chop, something he probably picked up from TV programmes such as Danger Man or The Saint. Once he had hit Danny Robertson so hard he broke a bone in his own hand; back at school the next day, with his fingers strapped together, his servile minions treated him as a hero. I feared and hated him with a passion, and on occasions I wondered what I could do if I ever saw him again. Life had treated me well enough, better than he by the looks of it. I had been successful in business, too successful, as it had cost my marriage some years back and I knew I had only myself to blame, so there were no recriminations. We were approaching the bottom of the moving stairway, and as we alighted I stepped up my pace until I was right behind him when we stepped onto the second escalator which would take us down to the station. His hair was greasy and unkempt; grey at the roots, the result of an attempt some weeks previously to stem the ravages of time. I could smell him; stale sweat, tobacco and booze; an unpleasant cocktail! Life hasn’t treated you too well at all, has it Mr Hamer? I thought to myself. I wonder where you are off to today. My plans were a single stop to Green Park then the Jubilee Line to Canary Wharf, but now? Well, who knows? As we descended I made the decision. It was not as though it hadn’t occurred to me before; there wasn’t much time anyway. I stuck close behind him as the moving floor merged with solid ground and I followed him to the northbound platform; the same as mine, but it no longer mattered. There was always a train within a minute or two; you could feel it coming, the charge of air being propelled forward and reaching the station well in advance of the train itself. My mind was racing – could I go through with it? Could I pull it off? In the end did I care? One way or the other the end was inevitable. I was standing immediately behind him now, within touching distance, the rush of air cooling my face, the rumbling of the approaching train. There it was, appearing from the tunnel, slowing but with still a fair way to go before it would stop. I only had a matter of months to live, the visit to Harley Streets two days before had confirmed that. I stepped from behind Hammer, then grabbed his arm and pulled it to my back before falling in front of the advancing train. There was panic and screaming, and to the seven witnesses who had been looking in that direction, it looked for all the world as though the bewildered-looking man in the dirty brown mackintosh had pushed someone in front of the train.

A choice of homemade soups was the first thing on the menu at a lunch provided by Seaford Inner Wheel Club on Saturday 17th March at St Leonard’s Church Hall, Seaford. The soup was followed by a ploughman’s lunch and a dessert at an all-in cost of £6. Considering the awful weather, the event was well supported and approximately £350 was raised for Water Aid, which is a charity the club tries to support every year.

This is an ageless comedy set in 1890 concerning Henry Hobson, renowned boot maker and his three daughters who live with him. Maggie, the eldest who runs the shop, is teased by her father for being past the marrying age. Maggie retaliates by marrying Willie Mossop, Hobson’s head boot maker, who has worked in the shop for years. From then on the comedy increases.

Newhaven Fort presents ‘The Angel and the Fiend’ The life of the fashion model, photographer and Surrealist muse Lee Miller presented as part of the Brighton Fringe Festival. Written and edited by her son, Antony Penrose. “I was terribly, terribly pretty. I looked like an angel, but I was a fiend inside”. This is how Lee Miller described herself in an interview she gave towards the end of her life. Her career began as a New York fashion model but she soon became a Surrealist muse and photographer in her own right in 1920s Paris. During the war she worked as a combat photographer with the US forces in Europe. Miller ended her days as a renowned gourmet cook living at Farley Farm in Chiddingly, visited amongst many others by Pablo Picasso, Joan Miró and Max Ernst. Newhaven Fort, as a part of The Brighton Fringe Festival, will present ‘The Angel and the Fiend’ on Saturday 19th May, a dramatic reading of five voices accompanied by a projection of more than 360 of Miller’s photographs from throughout her career. Her life and work are presented through her own words and

those of some who were closest to her: Man Ray, the Surrealist photographer; David E. Scherman, the LIFE magazine photographer; Roland Penrose, her husband and Antony Penrose, her son. First performed in April 2003 at the J Paul Getty Centre (Los Angeles), this production has enjoyed continued success and was recently performed during Brighton Fringe Festival receiving a 5-star review: “...a tight, emotional and powerful piece, a beautiful collage of photos and memories... this was stunningly powerful theatre” Fringe Review 2009 ‘’Putting this play together was like assembling a jigsaw puzzle. When assembling the Lee Miller Archives I found the characters had kept each other’s letters and knowing them all personally helped me link the material together. I strived to represent them all in their truest form by using their own words, photographs and my memories of their personalities.’ ’ Antony Penrose 2010 David Burrough directs this production presented by a strong cast featuring Ami Bouhassane as Lee Miller (her grandmother), David Burrough as Roland Penrose, James Leighton as Man Ray, Jonathan Bailey as David E. Scherman and Antony Penrose as himself. “I often find the way people respond to my parents’ lives and work is deeply touching. It seems that those of us who have worked with their material come to view the world in a different way and in some way grow and develop in our own lives and work in a way that makes us more than we were before. Perhaps this is why the material remains relevant so long after the moment of its making.” Antony Penrose 2010 Tickets are priced at £9 and can be purchased from Newhaven Fort by calling 01273 517622. Alternatively, tickets can be purchased online from the Brighton Fringe Festival Box Office www.brightonfestivalfringe.org.uk The performance is at 7.30pm – 9pm (Doors open at 7pm) and includes an interval. Mockford’s the Blindmakers Specialists in quality handmade vertical and roller blinds

Telephone: 01323 417518 The Industrial estate, GREEN STREET, EASTBOURNE, BN20 1QN OPEN 9.30PM TO 1PM MON TO SAT So many of Jean and Harvey Mockford’s Seaford customers recommend them or place new orders, that they do not need to advertise; however many are unaware that the ten-year lease on the shop in Sutton Road has expired. As their customers in Seaford are too numerous to contact individually, this notice of their address and telephone number will appear in the Seaford Scene each month. Nothing else has changed; they still regard themselves as Seaford’s Blindmakers abeit based 15 minutes away in Eastbourne, where their headquarters have been for more than a quarter of a century. To telephone for after-sales service, or to arrange for Jean to call to estimate for new blinds (that are guaranteed for 20 years) or if you wish to visit the showroom, take the A259 from Seaford, on approaching Eastbourne go straight ahead at the traffic lights, then by the Tally Ho pub turn left into Green Street and the industrial estate is up a driveway opposite the first bus shelter.

U FIT BLINDS MADE TO MEASURE, DIY ONLY ADDRESS, TELEPHONE NUMBER AND DIRECTIONS AS MOCKFORDS ABOVE. When we asked customers why they purchased u fit blinds, a few of their replies were: “Other firms said, ‘why fit blinds yourself, we fit them free of charge?’ What they should have said is, ‘fitting is included in the price of the blinds’. I bought one from u fit and saved £40; the only way to get free fitting is to fit it yourself”. “I went to a DIY superstore for a vertical blind; they didn’t have they size I needed, which meant I would have had to cut it down, which sounded like a lot of hassle. A mate said “go to u fit for a made-to-measure budget blind, they have 1,000 cloths to choose from”, so I did”. “I was confident about fitting a roller blind but not so sure I would get the measurements right, until I heard about u fit’s unique system of checking the measurements, which is so simple it must be foolproof”. “My wife and I derive a lot of pleasure from furnishing our home to a very high standard. I am a retired engineer and immediately appreciated your hand made deluxe vertical blinds tracking system and the attention to detail in sewing the hems with colour co-ordinating thread.”

SEAFORD & DISTRICT HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY www.seaford-sussex/sdhs

A view from the Potting Shed

We can all help to stop this decline by making our gardens friendlier for bees and pollinators. Nationally our gardens cover over one million acres, so if we can do just a small amount to help our pollinators in their work it will make a significant difference. Bees and insects pollinate both vegetables and fruit in our gardens. Better pollination leads to heavier crops and bigger yields. So what should we do? The answer is to plant pollen and nectar-rich plants and flowers. Many popular bedding plants mass-produced through garden centres are colourful but have no natural pollen

MAY checklist

3 Spring turns to summer in May and the days get longer. You

must still resist the temptation to plant out tender plants; wait until the end of the month. 3 With the hosepipe ban taking effect remember to use a watering can in early morning or the evening. Water directly to the soil under the plants; do not use a rose or water over plants. 3 Harden off any summer bedding plants before planting out. Then protect with fleece or cloches if frost forecast. 3 Prune any spring flowering clematis after it’s finished flowering. 3 Anyone interested in joining our Society should phone 01323 898733 for more details. 44

and nectar. These include most bedding plants such as Bizzy Lizzies, and Double Begonias. Instead, plants with single flowers are best, for example single annual Dahlias, Rudbeckia, Cosmos, Lobelia, Achillea and Foxglove. All of these are rich in pollen and nectar and will make your garden a haven for wildlife. From 2012 most garden centres and nurseries should be introducing new type of RHS plant label incorporating a new Bee Friendly logo. These new labels will indicate that the relevant plants are loaded with nectar or pollen and will therefore play their part in attracting wildlife back into our gardens.

here has been quite a bit of recent publicity given to the question of reintroducing wild flowers and meadow plants into our landscape. I was shocked to hear that nationally we have lost over 90 per cent of wildflowers found in our meadows and road-side verges. Three British species of bumble bee and 67 per cent of our native butterflies, moths and insects have all become extinct.

FRUIT TREES

Growing fruit in the garden or allotment is now becoming extremely popular. With a little bit of effort you get a supply of fresh, tasty fruit for the summer and autumn plus the added bonus of beautiful blossom in the spring. Fruit trees, often known as Top Fruit, are split between Pip Fruit, that’s apples and pears, and Stone Fruit, that’s plums, peaches/nectarines, cherries, damsons etc. Many of these fruit trees now come in a variety of different sizes to suit your requirements. Then there is Soft Fruit: Blackberries/Gooseberries/ Strawberries. Currants come in red, white and black and then Cane Fruit: raspberries, loganberries etc. From May onwards it is important to ensure that all fruit has enough water to develop when fruit is setting. Weed control is important and mulch where possible.Young fruit trees less than two years old should not be allowed to carry fruit so remove fruitlets by hand. Older trees should be thinned a little later on. Set up Codling Moth pheromone traps where you have a group of trees to keep control of the little blighters. Similar traps can also be obtained for Plums and Cherries. Peaches under cover can now be thinned to one fruit every 4 to 6 inches. Raspberries should be tied to avoid damage in high winds. Thin out every other gooseberry for a larger crop and check every few days for Sawfly. Mike Parker, Chairman

Seaford Gardening Club What extremes of weather we are experiencing as I write this article! Thank goodness we are not suffering the wintry conditions as in the northern counties. Hopefully things will settle down soon ready for planting out seedlings etc. At our March meeting Laurie Manser gave an amusing and informative talk entitled ‘Pot Plants, their Care and Propagation’. Apparently more pot plants are bought in the winter months and can suffer damage being transferred from hothouses via garden centres and shops to our homes. Due to changes in temperatures plants can ‘catch cold’ so must be protected with wrapping etc. If you have central heating place on window sills but move into the room at night once curtains are drawn. As they can dry out in such conditions, give them the occasional misting; do not over water and only feed when necessary. Only re-pot when plant begins to outgrow the size pot it is in as some specimens will survive better under stress. Laurie also related information about the propagation of some species, eg. Amaryllis - let leaves die back after removing dead flower head, do not water while dormant and only re-pot when it has outgrown present pot. Begonias and Streptocarpus can be increased by leaf cuttings, using a mixture of 50% all-purpose compost and 50% perlite. African violets do better in smaller pots, and propagate well with whole leaves removed and placed in water to develop roots before planting in new containers. More advice and information followed and slides were shown of the beautiful varied colours of begonias he had grown, plus tips on how to transport specimens to shows safely. It was Laurie’s third talk to the club and we will certainly ask him back again. A most enjoyable evening was had by all present. Our next social evening will be on Wednesday 30th May at 7.30pm at Cross Way, Steyne Road, Seaford (opposite the Wellington pub). We are only using this venue for May and June, returning to the Clinton Centre in September for the new season. Mr Ian Gledhill will give a talk entitled ‘The Story of Crystal Palace’. Why not come along, either as a visitor for a fee of £2 or join for £10 for the year. Phone Anne Silk on 01323 491331 or visit www.seaford-sussex.co.uk/ sgc for more information.

The Seaford in Bloom Open Gardens Day 2012, sponsored by Rowland Gorringe Estate Agents, will be held on Sunday 15th July between 1pm and 6pm. This is the fourth year running that Rowland Gorringe are very kindly sponsoring this event This year, there are several new venues including winning gardens from the 2011 Seaford inSeaford Bloom Floral Competiton. This is a wonderful opportunity for visitors to see the variety of plants and shrubs that thrive in a very windy seaside location growing in a varied selection of gardens which will be very different in their size, style and content. Throughout the afternoon, cream teas will be available at two of the gardens and, at specified times, Ashley Stephenson LVO will be on hand at two other gardens to offer his expert gardening advice. For the first time, “The Bourne Chorus” will be performing at The Barn at 4pm. Although there are several other Open Gardens weekends taking place in and around Seaford this year, we hope that our event will once again be well supported, as it has been for the last 15 years. All the money raised from this event goes towards funding the floral displays in Seaford Town, which this year will have a main colour theme of red, white and blue, marking the Queen's Diamond Jubilee Year. The final list of the 2012 venues will soon be available and details of the gardens to visit will be posted on our website and in Seaford Scene. Information leaflets will also be available at the Tourist Information Centre in Church Street, Seaford and at Rowland Gorringe Estate Agents in Station Approach, Seaford. In 2011, despite gale force winds and three hours of relentless heavy rain, there was an excellent turnout to view the ten lovely Open Gardens on show. We are hoping for better weather this year. The closing date for entries in the 2012 Floral Competition is July 3rd and judging will take place on July 10th. Entry forms will soon be available in town or they can be downloaded now from our website: www.seafordsussex.co.uk/sib

SEAFORD UNITY GROUP

Meeching Amateur Dramatics (MAD) is bringing to the stage Michael Cooney's riotous farce, 'Cash on Delivery' in May. Michael, the son of Ray, has enjoyed success both in Europe and all across the United States with this unusual offering. Whilst identity theft is usually not the stuff of combustible comedy, when it results in mistaken identities, mixed signals, ill-timed interruptions and the rest of the detritus of classic farce, it becomes a comical tour de force. This farce centres around the antics of Eric Swan, who (aided by his Uncle George and unbeknown to his wife Linda), has pocketed thousands of pounds through fraudulent DSS claims. Throw in the antics of the lodger, Norman, an undertaker, bereavement counsellor, a psychiatrist, fiancée, corpse and a rebellious washing-machine and you have a very funny evening's entertainment. The production runs over two consecutive weekends from Thursday to Saturday, 17 to 19 and 24 to 26 May. Each night, 7.45pm except Saturday 19 matinee only 3pm, at Meeching Hall, Fort Road, Newhaven. Tickets £8 (Matinee £7) from Meeching Estate Agents, High Street, Newhaven Tel. (01273) 515566.

The Unity Group started two years ago. It is for ex- RAF personel and their spouses to meet and greet and enjoy lunch together. These meetings are run by Doreen and Ken Davies c/o Drop-in Centre, The Old Town Hall, South Street, Seaford. Rita Evans looks after the transport bookings and meals at Diella's - the next one is in Aug/Sept. The last Unity meal was at the White Lion, a sausage and mash lunch, followed by fruit crumble and custard. The atmosphere at these lunches is relaxed and enjoyable; we only ask for a raffle donation please, as part of our fund-raising efforts. Our last raffle raised £40. We look forward to seeing you. To join us, please let us know in ample time by contacting Rita Evans on 01323 896877 or write to 21 East Street Seaford. Alternatively, call in to the Drop-in Centre and enjoy an excellent drink and fresh home-baked cake. You will be very welcome.

Seaford Museum and Heritage Society AGM Seaford Museum and Heritage Society held its Annual General Meeting at the Little Theatre on the evening of Friday, 23rd March. This was a quite a milestone event for the Museum as an updated constitution was approved and the old group of trustees was replaced by a new post of President filled by Mr Laurie Holland. Some key, long serving members of the committee are leaving for various reasons: Charles Painter has led the services team for many years and was also vicechairman. He is continuing with the services work but stepping down from the committee to reduce his workload. Hazel Henderson is in charge of sales with the full responsibility for the museum shop. She will also be continuing with this work but no longer wishes to have the extra work as a committee

member. Sue Sutton (pictured above) is not only leaving the committee but also leaving the Seaford area for family reasons. Sue has worked on compiling the vast archive of Seaford information for over 30 years. As the archivist, she has helped thousands of people in searches for information about past inhabitants, events, houses, etc. which they wanted for their family trees, buying a house or research for writing a book. The archives contain tens of thousands of entries on the museum data-bases, which are currently being upgraded to a more modern system and Sue has been playing a major role in defining this new design. She will be a great loss to the Museum as whenever there is a query, the usual action is “Ask Sue”. Although the committee is losing valuable, experienced members, evolution continues and already two new members have been accepted. Judith Marr is responsible for general housekeeping and has already made a difference in many of the displays. Paul Bowler has also been active for some time and will be stepping into the space on the committee for services. After the AGM matters were rapidly settled, members were entertained with music by Joy Lewis & Derrick Hughes accompanying poetry by Peter Martin read by Peter, his wife, Patricia Martin and Mandy Gordon. The narrator for the evening was Kevin Gordon.

CINECITY creates film-set for Patrick Hamilton’s classic novel ‘Hangover Square’. 50 years after the death of Patrick Hamilton iconic author, saloon-bar laureate and former Hove resident - a unique art installation will revisit his most famous work. To mark its 10th anniversary CINECITY and production designer/ artist Anna Deamer present a film set for an imaginary film version of 'Hangover Square', widely regarded as Hamilton's masterpiece. Commissioned by HOUSE 2012, the free exhibition runs at the University of Brighton Gallery throughout May as part of Brighton Festival. Seaford Museum has generously supported the

HILL HOUSE

BED & BREAKFAST

innovative exhibition by loaning a range of period props. Set in the seamy watering holes of Earls Court and a rain-swept Brighton on the cusp of World War II, lonely drifter George Harvey Bone is hopelessly infatuated with small-time actress Netta Longdon. Two interiors, inextricably linked, form the heart of the exhibition: in the South Gallery a smart Brighton hotel room; in the north, a seedy London flat where the book's climactic crime scene is re-imagined. Offering connections and clues to the rest of this darkly comic novel, the exhibition also allows the viewers to weave their own narratives upon the empty rooms. Full of atmosphere and rich in period details, Hangover Square has involved around 400 students from City College Brighton & Hove and the University of Brighton, working in an art department guided by industry professionals. The Duke of York's cinema in Brighton will be screening a short season of Patrick Hamilton-related films to complement the exhibition and there is also a special panel discussion at the University of Brighton including Hamilton's biographer, Nigel Jones. Many well-known figures including Julie Burchill and Kathy Burke have declared 'Hangover Square' their favourite novel. Patrick Hamilton was one of the great literary chroniclers of drinking. In the words of JB Priestley, he ‘spent too many of his later years in an alcoholic haze, no longer a social drinker but an unhappy man who needed whisky as a car needs petrol’. 2012 marks the 50th anniversary of his death. The exhibition at the University of Brighton Gallery is open 5th - 27th May, Mon to Fri, 11am – 7pm; Sat and Sun 11am – 5pm. More details can be found at: www.brightonfestival.org

The Base is a youth facility in Seaford, situated in the Salts Recreation Ground. The Base’s management committee is focused on delivering a hub for the area’s youth community and has been investigating potential funding to develop the interior of the premises with the installation of utilities and a toilet, and thereby increasing the facility’s flexibility and appeal.

appleade Apple support and repairs Rob Cunningham 07736 451190 rob@appleaide.co.uk www.appleaide.co.uk

The committee was very pleased to recently receive a cheque for £250 from the Police Property Act. The cheque for planned building works at The Base was presented to Seaford’s Young Mayor, Amy Gough, by the town’s new PCSO Lee Torbet.

The Base Management Committee Chairman, Councillor Paul Heseltine said, “The management committee has been very active in gaining support and momentum for The Base and receiving this additional funding will greatly assist with our plans”. Whether it is a place to meet friends, undertake band practice or attend drop-in sessions run by the Youth Development Service, The Base is in a fantastic location with lots of exciting potential. Paul continues, “We would love for teenagers, parents and interested parties to join our committee or become members of The Base and help keep this unique facility in full use”. We would be delighted to hear from anyone who would like to use the The Base or has ideas for its potential use. For further information, please contact Councillor Paul Heseltine on 07866 421025 or email him at paul@brushstrokes.co.

SEAFORD SCENE’S OBJECT OF THE MONTH Each month the Seaford Scene will identify an object of interest amongst the museum’s vast collection. Look out for the ‘Seaford Scene Object of the Month’ label which identifies it at the museum. WOODEN PHOTOCOPIER Seaford Museum not only has a comprehensive archive of documents relating to Seaford History but also has a huge and diverse collection of objects relating to social and domestic life. Visitors are fascinated when they see objects that they remember when they were younger and I regularly hear someone say “My Gran had one of those in her home!”. Some exhibits however are unusual, such a Braille typewriter, a mummified frog and this item – a wooden photocopier. When was the last time you saw one of these? The museum is now open longer hours so please call in and have a look at this quirky machine, which is on display in the Photographer’s Shop. Selected by Kevin Gordon Museum Summer Opening Times from April 7th: Sundays and Bank Holidays. 11am to 1pm and 2.30 - 4.30pm. Wednesdays and Saturdays. 2.30pm - 4.30pm. Wills Are you aware of how your estate would be distributed if you died without making a will? It might not be as you think or would wish for, leaving a lot of potential problems for your beneficiaries. A will is inexpensive to make and the professional advice you will receive at Barwells will ensure that your loved ones are left with as few problems as possible.

Lasting Powers of Attorney This document enables you to give named persons, your attorneys, the powers to deal with your affairs should you become unable to deal with them yourself. The document can be, and should be, prepared well in advance so that it is there if the time comes. It must not be left until it is too late as a person without capacity cannot then appoint attorneys and an application to the Court to appoint a Deputy must be made, which is much more time consuming and expensive. The moral is to prepare the document when you can and, if you have elderly relatives, make sure that they have done so as well.

Estates If a relative has passed away, it is very often a stressful time for the family. In these circumstances, our team of specialists at Barwells can take the burden of dealing with the estate off your hands, bringing to bear our extensive experience in the administration of estates. If you find yourself having to consider dealing with an estate, give us a call and we can let you know how we can help.

Special Spring Offer Consult us regarding a Lasting Power of Attorney and receive a 20% discount on our normal charge on production of this leaflet. Offer ends 31st July 2012.

Government is trying to highlight its efforts to clamp down on tax avoidance.

This could be bad news for all home owners, as when first time buyers dry up, the effect ricochets

On the bright side our residential property department has seen some good signs this spring. New sales are going through and we can only hope first timers are able to weather the extra tax burden.

On 24th March stamp duty relief was removed for first time buyers. From now on any residential property of £125k or over will incur stamp duty.

Even if it is not currently top of your agenda, being able to retire when and how you would like, is sooner or later likely to be one of your most important financial objectives writes Robin Stevenson Head of Taxation and Private Clients at top accountants Swindells. Running Commentary... Running is a positive, healthy and rewarding activity, requiring little in the way of specialised equipment. In the early stages of taking up running, improvements in your strength, fitness and stamina, and an increase in the distance you run, are inevitable consequences of enjoying what you’re doing. All these factors help create the mind set of a runner, enabling you to cope with tough conditions, pain and further improvements. It is well-known that carbo-loading boosts the fuel tank in your legs so you can handle long-distance running but just as important is the need to ‘fill the tank’ in your brain because runners need to be not only physically ready but mentally prepared as well. Filling that ‘tank’ is a mind game, where you feed the brain with encouraging thoughts before, during and after an event or training run. Running up a hill, for instance, should not be seen as a difficulty or ‘dislike’ but as an interesting bit of variety for the legs… and think of the lovely view from the top, especially around Seaford. Running in the rain?… well, that can help lubricate your breathing and make running easier, while feeling tired after a run usually implies that you’ve been going faster or further, and that’s an encouraging thought to feed the brain with too. When you perform well in a race or on a training run you probably feel good about it but is that because you ran well or did you run well because you felt good? It’s more likely to be the result of a positive-thinking mind-set. Even though running engenders calmness and confidence, and its own feel-good factor, it still requires extra inputs to keep the fuel tank in your brain topped up to ‘raise the bar’ to greater achievements. This applies whether you are a beginner, regular runner or seasoned campaigner. ‘Mind over matter’ is a powerful tool in a runner’s armoury and the more it is used the more effective it is. One of the best exponents of this approach to running is marathon and ultra-distance runner Stuart Mills from East Hoathly, who has won the Beachy Head Marathon more than any other runner, and he’s still winning races even though he is approaching fifty. Keeping a diary of your training, races, times and even the weather conditions is a good way of developing a more positive outcome to your running, rather than expecting your memory to hold all the information.

74

Amongst the host of running events this month is a very interesting new one, spread over three days. It is part of what’s called the Sussex Living Marathon Weekend, starting on Saturday 5th May with the East Grinstead 10-mile race. Then on the Sunday it’s the Haywards Heath 10 miler, followed on the Monday by the Burgess Hill 10km. Enter all three and you will have covered a marathon distance. There is also a team relay option and children’s races too. Check out the Sussex Races website for details of this and all the other events that could make this a month to indulge yourself!! Rotary Club of Seaford 65th Birthday On Friday March 2nd our evening with partners became a celebration of the Club’s 65th birthday. We were honoured by the presence of our District Governor, Duncan Anderson, and his wife Angela. In his speech Duncan complimented the Club on its endurance, diversity and energy in presenting the ideals of Rotary to the community. President Isla thanked him on behalf of the Club and commented on the number of projects in which we were involved, some of which were new, some, like our Christmas Sleigh, over 50 years old. The highlight of the evening though was the talk given by our speaker and newest member, Ray Hazan. Ray’s matter-of-fact account of how he coped with being blinded and losing a hand in a parcel-bomb explosion during his time in the army in Northern Ireland was both humbling and inspiring. He has worked tirelessly for St Dunstan’s over the years and is currently its president. He was awarded the OBE in the New Year’s Honours List. His talk made the evening very special indeed and will live long in the memories of those who were there. Photo: District Governor, Duncan Anderson, and his wife Angela

A new display at Newhaven Fort was launched on the 31st March, courtesy of the Tunbridge Wells Sub Aqua Club. The Sub Aqua Club was founded in 1962 and operates out of Newhaven Harbour, diving on wrecks in the English Channel. The club is fully licensed and over the years members have explored wreckages of military and merchant ships, taking meticulous care to identify and research each one. The new display has enabled the club to display many objects and artefacts which will be a valuable addition to the many interesting exhibitions already established at Newhaven Fort. As well as underwater film footage, photographs and charts, the display features fascinating objects recovered from the sea. Among the wrecks featured is the P&O Liner Oceana, which sank off Beachy Head following a collision on 16th March 1912, whilst carrying a cargo of gold and silver bullion then worth £750,000. In addition the exhibition features the Royal Navy Submarine Holland 5, one of the navy’s first submarines, and its opposite number the German U-boat U-130, which sank in tow after the end of the Great War.

Living at Cuckmere Haven

Part 9

The last painters have just packed up their easels and left after a wonderful three-day oil-painting workshop here at the cottage. We love hosting these workshops. By some magical intervention, the sun always seems to shine and it’s a pleasure to share the wonders of the sky- and seascape here. It’s great to look around the garden and see painters deep in concentration, capturing the vastness of the landscape on their canvases. And they always seem to leave a very peaceful feeling in and around the cottage. We’re enjoying the sense of having our house back too though, now that everyone has left. Once the doors have closed, the cottage becomes our home again and we can sing outrageously loud and talk in strange ‘pet’ voices to the dog and cats. People who have attended courses here always offer us a great gift: the chance to see our home anew. Regular readers of this column will know that we often count our lucky stars (all of them, sometimes the sky is like a carpet of them here). But there’s something about seeing everything afresh that makes our souls sing with joy…When people first walk in and see the clear horizon through all the windows and experience the deep sense of stillness and peace that Cuckmere offers, we get to live it all again through them.

and artificial it would seem if electric light poured out across the garden. Lots of people seem concerned about our eyes, because we both read avidly and by candlelight. Just to reassure one and all, both sets of our peepers seem to be doing okay! I got Robb a really good solar torch for Christmas. So often these products fade after a few hours’ use, but this one lasts for ages and is bright without being painfully so. But when we went to order another one - or ten! - we were disappointed to find that the company no longer makes them. So we take it in turns to read with it, and I still find that a candelabra with three candles is more than enough light for me to read by. On my birthday in April, my sister Melissa, Robb and I all walked from Eastbourne to Cuckmere. Though snow had been threatened (Robb told me this on April’s Fools Day so I thought he was just playing a trick on me), the day actually turned out magnificent. We even got a little bit sunburnt in the spirit of all hapless Brits by the seaside (well, when snow’s been forecast, you have to be forgiven for neglecting to pack the sun-cream). Every year, we set off to Pembrokeshire in a big family team, to walk the coastal paths. My birthday walk lifted the spirits in much the same way as our Pembrokeshire walks do. The combination of turquoise seas, blue skies, green, green grass and white chalk all combine to evoke such a holiday feeling.

We first came to this house about eight years ago. It was after dark - we had been invited over for drinks – and as we came down the path we felt as if we were entering a magic kingdom! The flickering candlelight dancing across people’s faces…the windows that made you feel as if you We’ve been happily feasting on some of the garden delights were aboard a boat…and the incredible sense of stepping that seeded themselves – leeks and chard, spring onions back through time. Someone said to me a few days ago and chives. We’ve got a greenhouse full of seedlings ready that it was a real shame that we couldn’t get electricity to go in. Robb has started making his delicious nettle, sea down here. Oh no! we both replied. Au contraire! The beet and feta cheese pie – the foraging starts in earnest residents could, I’m sure, ask to have electricity down here. this season. Nearly forgot to mention that I had my first Robb and I could even rig up some lights from our solar sea swim at the end of March – lordy miss claudy, it was panel or wind turbine. But there’s something that would be cold! I feel I need to apologise to anyone aboard the yacht lost in doing so. This house is imbued with the energy of that was floating a little way out that day – my squeals its past. Standing at the window with the waves below, it is were deafening. Needless to say, I haven’t quite been brave easy to imagine the original coastguard on look-out on a enough to repeat the experience but the next really sunny stormy night. And the cottage is so intrinsically a part of its day I’ll give it a go…honest! surroundings that blazing lights would seem incongruous. We walked the dog just as the sun was setting last night, Lucy Corkhill returning after dark, and we both commented how strange To advertise in Seaford Scene please call 01273 710793 or email fran@seafordscene.co.uk 95
