THE Seaford Bonfire Society The Seaford Bonfire Society re-formed in 2010/11 after a gap of some 35 years and, as those of you who attended the procession last year will know, put on a splendid procession and firework display. Plans are now underway to repeat the success of 2011. On October 20th 2012 the Seaford Bonfire Society will be holding a grand torchlit procession and firework display with free entry for all. The procession will leave the White Lion Hotel in Claremont Road at about 7.15pm to process through the town reaching the Martello Fields for a free firework display at about 8.30pm.

The torchlit procession of Seaford Shags - Smugglers, Saxons and Pirates - will march proudly alongside other Sussex Bonfire societies accompanied by the brilliant Pentacle Drummers, the exciting Beach Bateria Samba Band and the thrilling Euphoria steel band. There will be road closures in operation during the evening and these will be properly publicised on the streets affected. Letters will be distributed in advance to those residents who are particularly affected by the short-term road closures and restrictions. The Seaford Bonfire Society is entirely self-funded and you may have seen the Society’s presence at fetes and boot fairs this year where they have been fundraising not just to cover the costs of a huge firework display, but also to raise funds for the Seaford Lifeguards and the Seaford Downs Syndrome and Special Needs Group. The official Seaford Bonfire Society 2012 programme is now on sale for £1, which you can purchase from the friendly Seaford Shags who will be on duty every Saturday in Broad Street and also from selected local retailers including Seaford News in Broad St, The Retro Market in the High Street, the Bakery in Broad St. and Phoenix Hair and Beauty in Sutton Rd. The programme contains full details of the procession timetable, the map of the procession route and plenty of information about Seaford Bonfire Society. New members are always welcome to join this sociable family-oriented society and full details of how to join are included in the programme. Seaford Bonfire Society is looking forward to putting on a wonderful procession and display for the people of Seaford and it looks forward to your support to help continue this magnificent Sussex tradition. Be sure to come along and support Seaford’s very own Bonfire Society on Saturday October 20th, 2012. Karen Hardy - SBS Publicity Email: seafordbonfire@gmail.com

SEAFORD NATURAL HISTORY SOCIETY We are looking forward to welcoming current and new members to Seaford Natural History Society’s 2012/2013 indoor programme which starts on the 9th October. We are a friendly group of people with an interest in wildlife, particularly the plants and animals of East Sussex. In the winter, we arrange illustrated talks, usually on local flora, fauna and habitats, at St Luke’s Church, Walmer Road at 2.15pm on Tuesday afternoons – see the listings at the back for details. Our season starts this year with a session on Rye Harbour Nature Reserve (October 9th) and continues with Dragonflies on your Doorstep on 30th October. Visitors are welcome – we ask for a donation of £3, which will be deducted from your membership if you decide to join the society. For more information about the society, please visit our website www.seafordnaturalhistory.org.uk or ring 01323 491964.
Out and about in October
Seaford Birds by Bob Self October is an exciting period of flux on the south coast as migrant summer visitors are replaced by incoming winter visitors. Although most summer breeders have already migrated south to warmer wintering quarters, the first week of the month often witnesses the last large waves of departing Tree Pipits and Yellow Wagtails. Despite the general exodus, however, we should still keep an eye out for interesting late stragglers. On average, the last Osprey is usually recorded around 26 October and the last Hobby of the year can be expected around 22 October when they are likely to be seen hawking for late dragonflies or dashing after the few remaining Swallows and Martins. On the coast, the last Common and Arctic Terns are still likely to be present until the very last days of the month. Although Swifts are one of the earliest species to migrate south to sub-Saharan Africa (with the bulk of them leaving in early August), the latest ever recorded was on 24 November while the average date for the last record of the year in Sussex is 16 October. A few Swallows are even later in departing with the last birds leaving around 25 November and there are even records of this species into late December. In suitable migrant traps along the coast, there are also still some summer visiting warblers to be found in
October while the average date for the last Wheatear is 10 November and Ring Ouzels can still be expected until 14 November – although the latest ever record of the latter is 26 December. For most of us, however, October is more strongly associated with the beginning of the influx of winter visitors from the north. This certainly true of our winter water birds with the first White-fronted Geese, Smew, Goldeneye, Long-tailed Duck and both Black-throated and Great Northern Divers all being likely to be seen along the coast during the month. The first Bitterns also begin to be taking up their winter quarters in the county while the first Great Grey Shrikes can be expected to appear on the county’s heaths in the middle of the month. Other raptors which arrive in October are Hen Harriers, Short-eared Owls and the much smaller Merlin – although this year the first Merlin was actually recorded on the Cuckmere on the extremely early date of 1 August. Among the other more common arrivals to look out for in October are the winter thrushes like Fieldfare and Redwing and winter finches like Siskin, Redpoll and Brambling. For observers along the coast a familiarity with the call of these species will help greatly in identifying flocks of birds flying over. For the more committed birdwatcher, of course, October is the principal month for finding a real rarity in Sussex. This is most likely along the coast and the bushes and gorse around Beachy and Seaford Head provide prime sites to scour for a possible rare vagrant like a Dusky, Radde’s, Barred, Melodious or Icterine Warbler or for brightly coloured jewels like Yellow-browed and Pallas’s Warblers along with the enchanting (and much commoner) Firecrest. Again, the Horseshoe Plantation at Beachy Head is the locus classicus for the last three species. For those who watch the sea for passing birds from the Seaford sea-front, October is also arguably the best month to see Manx, Balearic and Sooty Shearwaters given suitable weather and wind conditions. The 2012 Seaford in Bloom Awards The Seaford in Bloom Awards Ceremony took place at Dean’s Place Hotel, Alfriston on 14 August. Chairman Isabel Stephenson welcomed more than 80 invited guests, including Cllr. Linda Wallraven, the Mayor of Seaford; the Manager of the Eastbourne Arndale Centre, Bill Plumridge, who would present the awards; and representatives from organisations in Seaford who continue to support Seaford in Bloom in many ways. There followed an innovative presentation of all the Floral Competition entries including a slideshow containing photos of all the gardens produced by Nigel using Fotobox. Ashley Stephenson L.V.O. gave an interesting and informative commentary to accompany the show, offering many hints and tips that could be invaluable to future potential Floral Competition prizewinners. These ranged from curving the edges, filling the garden with colour and using unusual plant specimens to clearing the garden of weeds, pests and disease before judging takes place. Ashley revealed the SIB judges’ point-scoring framework for future reference: Colour & Co-ordination 40% - Condition & Cultivation 30% - Design 15% Cleanliness (weeds, pests etc.) 5% - Impact 5% - Variety 5%. After a refreshment break, Isabel announced that this year, the Open Gardens Day was a great success. A record £2,300 had been raised: “We even ran out of scones for the cream teas”. Isabel gave sincere thanks to all the loyal helpers and supporters who continue to make Seaford in Bloom so worthwhile, including Seaford Town Council; the Rotary Club of Seaford for sponsoring the awards event; Dean’s Place for hosting it, and many other Seaford businesses, societies, clubs and associations who have supported it. Finally, thanks went to her committee, who always give her great support.
16
Isabel then began the awards presentation. There were more entries than ever for “Best Back Garden” and “Best Front Garden” in this year’s Floral Competition. There was loud applause when Cllr. Wallraven presented the Mayor’s Cup for “Outstanding effort to enhance Seaford” to Crooked Lane Estates. For the second year running, the “Best Back Garden” and “Best Overall Entry” trophies were awarded to Mrs D. Hicks, who received a new trophy
this year, the Gillian Fisher Cup, which was donated and presented by Len Fisher in memory of his wife Gillian. John Price presented The Ivy Price Cup for “High Standard of Achievement” to Old Ben Homes. 92-year-old Mrs Barbara Bax, a long-time supporter of Seaford in Bloom, was awarded the Plantsman’s Cup for “Best Plant Interest”. The Patrick McCausland Trophy for special contribution to Seaford in Bloom was awarded to Dean’s Place Hotel for generously hosting this event for the last five years. After the awards Bill thanked all those who had entered this year’s Floral Competition and the Seaford in Bloom committee for their hard work in helping to make Seaford such a colourful town. Isabel closed the evening with a reminder that the next SIB fundraising event will be a “Pasta Evening” at Diella’s restaurant on Friday 30th November. Full details will be posted around the town nearer the date. The Newhaven & District Model Railway Club has been established in the area for over 50 years. Although we are a small club we do have nationally known layouts which have featured in the Model Railway Press and over the years our members have won national prizes for their modelling skills. This year we are happy to announce that we are supported by Paradise Park which is helping us with advertising and publicity ventures. On the last weekend of October we have the first of a series of demonstrations at Paradise Park which show some of the activities at the Club. Next year we hope to hold a model railway show within the garden centre as well as our show in Seaford. Our current clubroom is near Newhaven Harbour station in a former bonded warehouse. Members are working on layouts in N, 00 and 0 gauges. We meet on Wednesday evenings and welcome visitors so if that appeals please do drop in and have a look round. The Rotary Club of Seaford August is the month for holidays but it has been ‘business as usual’ for The Rotary Club of Seaford. Last year the club was able to help the Seaford Musical Theatre Juniors get started with a donation to their funds. The membership has doubled and there is now a waiting list and well-received shows have been put on at the Barn Theatre. This year the club was happy to repeat its financial support which will go towards production and other costs which will help to make the project affordable to all. Club President Paul Vaesen, accompanied by his wife Daphne, made the presentation just before the dress rehearsal of their most recent production and was spotted joining in a chorus with gusto. Your reporter attended the opening night of sparkling musical theatre, which emphasised the great strides the company, under the direction of Paula Woolven, has made in the last year. We were delighted to welcome Anne Bickmore as our speaker on 8th August. Anne is well known as a swimming teacher but not so many people will know that, arising from this, she has founded a charity, the Anne Bickmore Children’s Fund. Initially aimed to help needy children with the cost of achieving ASA awards it has now widened its scope to working with children and families in the UK to relieve poverty, hardship and distress whether caused by financial crises, disability, bereavement or hospitalisation. She left a lasting impression of great energy coupled with unstinting hard work all aimed to bring some joy and comfort to those in distress. For those who are not aware of the Exchange Project in the Crouch Gardens in Seaford it is worth going to have a look. Over the last few years a disused plot adjacent to the telephone exchange has been transformed into a highly productive garden. The project helps local people of all ages who are disadvantaged or disabled in some way to use their skills to produce an abundance of flowers
24
and vegetables. The club had helped in the purchase of some paving slabs and some members and friends turned out to move them from their delivery point to the garden. Three pallets of slabs and three Hippo bags of sand later we were happily exhausted and very pleased to have been able to help. Yes, the sun shone for our monthly Car, Boot and Produce Fair in August! This was a considerable relief for all concerned after a complete washout in July and only the very hardiest attending in May and June. All the money raised goes to our Trust Fund for onward distribution, so a good turnout of both sellers and buyers is important. We hope for a similar sunny day for our last fair of the year in September. We were pleased that the sun also shone for the South Coast Triathlon and Half Marathon where we have traditionally managed the car parking. Entries were up this year, perhaps spurred on by our Olympic success, and our Trust Fund benefited accordingly. Just a few days ago the Wave Leisure Centre in Seaford hosted the Seahaven Para Games. This event was initiated by Searchlight, in Newhaven, last year. The club has supported Searchlight’s participation in disabled sporting events over many years and is delighted to continue to do so. Eddie Kidd attended with his Olympic relay torch; the non-competitive nature of the events appealed to all. Looking forward, we will be running our annual raffle at Morrison’s in October, when a substantial cash prize can be won and in November we are hosting a Seniors Tea Party with entertainment, at the St James Trust. St James’Trust The new minibus is now on the road and fully functioning. It is insured, maintained and fuelled for a year, thanks to the generosity of several local clubs and organisations. Equipped with a wheelchair lift, the bus is greatly appreciated by the members. Here we are, nearly nine months into 2012, and for St. James’ Trust it has been a year of ups and downs. St. James’ is now looking forward to a new start, hopefully in a new clubhouse and extending the services to its core clientele. Sadly Maggie Gentry, Ken and Doreen Davies have retired and the wonderful music appreciation afternoons provided by Bob Hipwell, who is now sadly too unwell to carry on, are missed by all. We are looking for volunteers to organise visits to the local theatre, and to take groups out for tea and visits to places of interest. Anyone who would like to put on a musical appreciation afternoon once a month please contact the office. The long-running and very expensive court case, over a tenancy dispute against a local builder who was running a business from one of the Trust’s buildings and refusing to agree terms, has now been settled in St. James’ favour, with costs. It is anticipated however that any recovery of this money will take an unreasonably long time. The Trust is the owner of a very large, old and high-maintenance property, requiring large sums of money for repairs and essential upkeep just to stand still. It has been decided by the membership that the best way forward is to sell part of the property for development and to rebuild one of the buildings to a high standard for use as a new clubhouse. We are negotiating with developers at this time and are looking forward to being able to start afresh, to expand and improve our services to the local community. The Trust volunteers have been fund-raising like mad and the donations towards the running of the new bus were obtained, by the efforts of Viv Reynolds, Jill Boniface and John Creasey, from Sussex Community Foundation, Cooperative Group Community Fund, South East Region, Bernard Sunley Charitable Foundation and the Rotary Club of Seaford. The Keith Baker Charitable Trust donated £20,000 towards the purchase of the new bus.
The Tuesday Lunch Club continues to run at maximum capacity, and Janet White and her team continue to produce mouth-watering meals. Our longest-serving group, Seaford Hand Bells, continues to meet on Wednesdays; the Recorder Groups and the Hotchpotch Orchestra meet and play weekly at the clubhouse. Thursday guitar lessons with Haven Guitar Club have classes for all levels: for details check it out on www. havenguitarclubs.co.uk/. There are yoga groups, dance classes, drama groups, religious meetings and much, much more. The toenail-cutting service continues on designated Fridays and the hearing-aid battery exchange service continues to give service on the first and third Fridays each month. Anyone in need of these services can obtain details from the clubhouse reception on 01323 492800. The Trust hosts Hard of Hearing and Lip Reading sessions, also the Stroke Club. The three halls are available to hire for children’s or anniversary parties; alas there is a time limit of 10pm as there are close neighbours to consider. The minibus is available with a driver for hire by groups wishing to go out and about; the vehicle will seat six plus an escort and one wheelchair. St. James’, like many other local charities, depends solely on volunteer workers and all administration duties are carried out by unpaid helpers. The shop is still doing well and as usual is run by dedicated volunteers guided by Frankie Good and since the resignation of Ken and Doreen the Drop-In at the Old Town Hall still continues to provide a haven for locals made welcome by the able group of volunteers. If you are interested in assisting with cooking or serving at the Lunch Club, driving or escorting on the minibus, doing a stint in reception or cleaning the car park once a week, please contact the reception office on 01323 492800. The Trust would like to thank the people of Seaford and area for all their support.
Need a good maintenance builder? EFFICIENT, RELIABLE & LOCAL? Whatever the problem.

Explore The Church On The Hill ‘Explore the church on the hill’ is the title of an Open Day at St Peter’s, East Blatchington, Seaford, on Saturday, 6th October from 10am to 4pm. Its aim is to strip away the mystery of church by giving people time to look at the church itself, and to learn about the diverse events which are held there. The Mayor of Seaford is expected to call in at 10am. The Rector, Canon Dr Andrew Mayes, said, “St Peter’s has been here 800 years, but we sense we’re Seaford’s best kept secret”. The ‘Hill’ in the title refers to Blatchington Hill. St Peter’s is at the corner of this and Belgrave Road. Admission is free! Photo: Phil Sutters.

First open art exhibition for Seaford at the Crypt Gallery Seaford is to hold its first open art exhibition at the Crypt gallery from 10th to 15th November. The local community are being encouraged to submit artwork with the chance of winning a top prize of £100 and a chance to exhibit their work in the Crypt Art gallery. Entry to the competition costs £5 for up to two works (free for any junior artist under 16). There is a £100 cash prize for the winning adult entry and a special trophy for the junior prize winner. This is Seaford’s first open art exhibition and will showcase work by local artists. People who have never exhibited are particularly encouraged to enter the competition. Work will be hung by specialist volunteers from the Crypt Gallery committee. The beautiful medieval undercroft space below the main gallery will also be used to show work. There will be free entry for visitors to the final exhibition. Paintings will be selected by three of the existing committee members: Nicky Auster, Keith Allfrey and Brian Millar. All three live in the Seaford area and have a background in the arts. “We are really hoping to get a wide selection of entries to choose from. In my experience it is such a thrill to have work selected and shown.” said Keith. “A lot of work will be available to buy but the main purpose is to showcase the creative talent of people that live in and around the town” said Nicky, the other judge. “I’m really looking forward to the event and encourage local residents to come along and have a look at the artwork. So many people say they have never been in the Crypt Gallery - which is a shame as it is a real Seaford gem.” said Brian.
SEAFORD'S FIRST OPEN ART EXHIBITION 10 - 15 November 2012 at the Crypt Gallery Residents of Seaford and the surrounding areas will be able to submit work with the chance to win the top judge’s prize of £100. Entry is £5 for up to two pieces of artwork (on this occasion sculpture and photography are excluded). Local schools will be contacted to invite applications from students and a junior prize will be awarded. Further details plus entry forms can be found at www.thecryptgallery.com, by contacting Seaford Town Council on 01323 894870 or by visiting the tourist information office in Church Street Seaford. crypt@seafordtowncouncil.gov.uk

The Industrial estate, GREEN STREET, EASTBOURNE, BN21 1QN OPEN 9.30PM TO 1PM MON TO SAT. Telephone: 01323 417518 So many of Jean and Harvey Mockford’s Seaford customers recommend them or place new orders, that they do not need to advertise, however many are unaware that the ten year lease on the shop in Sutton Road has expired. As their customers in Seaford are too numerous to contact individually, this notice of their address and telephone number will appear in the Seaford Scene each month. Nothing else has changed, they still regard themselves as Seaford’s Blindmakers albeit based 15 minutes away in Eastbourne, where their headquarters have been for more than a quarter of a century. To telephone for after-sales service, or to arrange for Jean to call to estimate for new blinds (that are guaranteed for 20 years) or if you wish to visit the showroom... take the 259 from Seaford, on approaching Eastbourne go straight ahead at the traffic lights, then by the Tally Ho pub turn left into Green Street and the industrial estate is up a driveway opposite the first bus shelter.

Who’s Who In Seaford?
Clare O’Malley, Member of Seaford Bonfire Society. Clare has lived in Seaford for 10 years and as a member and a ‘pirate’ of Seaford Bonfire Society, she is responsible for selling programmes. She attended Tideway School in Newhaven and used to work as a Registered Nurse for Mental Health and was the deputy in a pre-school on the Isle of Wight. Clare is divorced and has a son Paddy, 19, a daughter, Hope, 12 and a Bichon Frise called Sooty. What do you like best about Seaford? I like the friendly people and I love the location of having the seaside one side and the country side the other. What is your favourite song or piece of music? Attack by 30 Seconds to Mars. What book are you reading? The Measure of Magic by Terry Brooks. What is your favourite film? The Muppets Christmas Carol. Which living person do you most admire? My Mum. What is your favourite smell? Chocolate! What is the first line of your favourite poem? ‘Mummy I love you’ – a poem written to me by my daughter Hope. A view from the Potting Shed Raised beds can be a real bonus when growing vegetables in your garden. They certainly have a lot going for them. They can enhance the look of the vegetable plot and will make life a lot easier. This is the perfect time of year to start the construction of one or more raised beds. The timber required is not too expensive but you may need help with their construction. You can even buy ready-made kits for self- assembly but these are somewhat expensive. After the cost of the initial outlay they can last for many years. They are much easier to dig over and maintain throughout the growing season. Because the growing bed is much deeper the yield should be better and the quality of produce much improved. It makes weeding easier and if you use a “closer planting system” the hoe can be left in the shed. Should your soil be poor or stony you should double dig the ground level before filling with goodquality topsoil. These beds are ideal

red, yellow or orange. Take a walk through the woods and enjoy! 3 It’s still harvest time. So pick and store Apples, Pears, maincrop Carrots and Potatoes. Store for the winter or at least Christmas. 3 Sow Sweet Peas under glass for next year’s show! 3 Plant up window boxes and hanging baskets for winter interest. 3 Plant Garlic, Spring Cabbage and Japanese Onions.

for growing most types of veg including onions, salad crops, carrots, spinach, beans, summer cabbage and potatoes. The soil will warm up and dry out earlier in the spring so you get off to a good start. It is also ideal for a seed and cuttings bed. A few warnings should be noted. Raised beds will dry out quicker in hot weather so keep an eye on the watering. Perhaps a water drip system may be the answer. A final warning is about cats! They love to “use” the fine crumbly texture of a well-maintained raised bed! Mike Parker (Chairman)
FACIATION
Have you ever noticed the peculiar, broad, swollen and flattened main stems on flowers, shrubs and some fruit. The stems become fused together into one. This is probably what is known as Faciation. In most cases it does no harm but it may look most peculiar. All plants can be affected but it is most common in Delphiniums, Forsythia, Daphne, Lilies and Prunus. I have also seen it this year affecting cucumbers! The cause in most cases is early damage to the growing tip. This may be caused by insect damage, slugs, snails or frost. It may also be caused by a bacterial infection or genetic problems. If you find it unsightly it may be pruned out. Otherwise leave it on the plant.

Seaford Gardening Club Can someone please tell me what happened to summer 2012 - did I miss it? At least as I write this report we are experiencing some lovely September days, even if the evenings are beginning to draw in. So we must make the most of the early autumn days to tidy up in the garden and prepare to plant bulbs and suitable plants for the spring. We did not have a talk in August, but we did have four very enjoyable outings during the summer months, with one more to go to Wisley Gardens in October. Anne is already planning her programme for 2013 and has some nice ideas up her sleeve! The new programme will be out at the end of January 2013. Our next social evening will be on Wednesday 31st October. The meeting will start half an hour earlier than usual, at 7pm, to accommodate the AGM proceedings. Then Mr Peter James Hill will give us a talk entitled “A Guernsey Travelogue”. We are now back in the Clinton Centre, Clinton Place, Seaford (please use side door opposite Tesco). The programme of talks for 2012/13 will be available at this meeting. Members can also renew membership for £10 for the coming year, new members and visitors for a £2 fee are more than welcome to come along and enjoy a friendly evening of entertainment. I have never been to Guernsey so will look forward to learning about its delights.

Sandgate Close open Garden Success A garden in Sandgate Close opened by Aideen and Denis Jones in July as part of the National Garden Scheme has raised over £3000 for charity. The garden was opened on 1st and 22nd July and proved enormously popular, receiving 256 visitors on the first day, and 291 on the second. The crowds were looked after by 30 volunteers, who contributed to the days’ success by selling plant cuttings, home-made jam and second-hand books and providing around 300 afternoon teas for hungry visitors. The garden has also welcomed private group visits from, amongst others, the Sussex Hardy Plant Society who enjoyed trips to Seaford garden designer Lindsey Thomas’s garden and the Seaford Exchange Project on the same day - and East Blatchington Mother’s Union. The money raised by the garden’s opening will be divided among various local charities, including around £1000 for the National Garden Scheme.
Approximately £1000 will also help Stay Up Late, a charity of which Denis Jones is chair, which works to improve the social lives of adults with learning difficulties who need full-time carers with them whenever they go out. The charity campaigns for changes to employed carers-shift patterns, to allow them to stay at events, such as gigs, football matches, cinema visits and trips to London, until they finish. The organisation is also on the verge of launching a ‘gig buddies’ project, which will recruit volunteers to partner attendance at events. Aideen Jones is Chief Executive of Southdown Housing Association, and a further £1000 of the money raised will go to the Association’s Tenant Welfare Fund. The fund provides grants to tenants to meet unusual expenses not covered by other benefits or income, such as smart clothes for a job interview or urgent items to equip a new tenancy. The Seaford Exchange Project, a community gardening project, will receive £128, along with a cup donated in Denis’s mother’s name as a prize for their annual children’s pumpkin-growing competition, the Alice Jones Award.

SEAFORD EXCHANGE GARDEN: WE ARE FIVE Five years ago a large area of ground overshadowed by the telephone exchange building next door was hidden from view behind large gates and high walls that provided a warm and sheltered breeding ground for weeds. Landscape gardener Lindsay Thomas, who later constructed the Peace Garden just in front, and Wendy Simmons were saddened by the neglect but saw its potential and persuaded the council to let them take it over. They envisioned a community garden where volunteers would work together tilling the soil, sowing seeds, taking cuttings, growing plants and vegetables and selling the produce to provide a working profit that would perpetuate the cycle. The volunteers would welcome everybody, inclusive of impairment, and would strive to make the garden accessible to all. That dream quickly became a reality thanks to the energy of Lindsay, Wendy and others who also saw the garden’s potential and at a party next month we will be celebrating the fifth birthday of the Seaford Exchange Garden. Lindsay and Wendy should be justly proud of the legacy they have entrusted to the care of their co-volunteers and at the time of writing we were hoping that some of the party fare could be made from our own harvest, though no tomato sandwiches owing to blight. In the meantime the High Sheriff of Sussex, David Allam, was visiting the gardens on Friday 26 September and we hoped that he would be delighted to see the good use we have put to the monies which have enabled us to fence around the wildlife pond and take courses on First Aid, Health & Safety, Food Safety and Disability Awareness.

A Short Story
Senior Moments (Spoils of War II) By Alan Morton Bill had been up in his loft rummaging through boxes for over an hour. The idea was to start getting rid of some of the junk that had been accumulating over the decades, but as yet the large black plastic bin liner on the floor was relatively empty. Next year Bill would be eighty, he had no idea where the time had gone, and apart from the aching in his joints and some daily medication, he felt no different than he had done when he was a young lad. He placed the lid back on a cardboard box labelled Holiday Stuff 5 and returned it to one of the shelves he had created in the loft many years before. Bill lifted down the next box, marked All Sorts, placed it on an old chest and removed the lid. He sifted his way through yellowed editions of newspapers dated 1st July 1966. They all heralded the valiant success of the England football team in the World Cup Final the day before. He came across one commemorating the first moon landing, then one announcing Margaret Thatcher as the UK’s first woman Prime Minister and this was quickly dispatched towards the sack on the floor. He felt down to the bottom of the box, he knew it would be there, and withdrew a small bundle of tissue paper. Bill carefully unravelled it and revealed three lead soldiers brightly painted in the red-coat uniform from the Crimean era. They were a souvenir from his youth; of the war years; of the time he had unearthed the small figurines on a bomb-site in Silkstream Road, North London; the bomb-site that was all that was left of his friend Stanley’s house. Stanley, the owner of the lead soldiers; Stanley, the best friend who he never saw again after that fateful night when a German bomb destroyed the house. The pangs of guilt were still there, and Bill swallowed a lump that had welled up in his throat. He had been too quick that morning back in 1943 to salvage the little soldiers for himself, and he had never forgotten or forgiven himself for having given them more consideration than the wellbeing, welfare and whereabouts of Stanley. He wondered what had become of him, whether he had survived the war and what sort of life he had made for himself. For his own part, Billy’s family were bombed out themselves only a few days later and they evacuated to the South Coast, in which locale he still resided and had spent the rest of his life.
48
A voice from the hatch signalled that his lunch was ready, so he carefully wrapped the lead soldiers in the tissue paper and took them downstairs to show his wife, and to recite the story of how they were procured. He wasn’t sure that he had ever shared his story with her, even though they had been married for nearly fifty years, but it lightened his load to do so. “Whatever became of Stanley,” queried his wife Pam, “did you ever try and find out… you know young Daniel may be able to help…. he is into all that stuff…. family research…tracing old school friends and the like.” Daniel was Bill and Pam’s grandson, and he had been telling them only recently how he had been able to track down some old friends on the Internet. “I’ll mention it to him the next time he is here,” said Bill, “I guess it would be interesting to find out, although I fear he may well have perished during the war.” A couple of weeks later Bill retold the story to Daniel, and asked if it was possible to find out what had happened to Stanley. Daniel was doubtful, but asked for some details, including the name of the school that they had attended as boys. Later that evening he checked out the www. schoolregister.com website for Tufton Street Primary school for the years 1939-1943. There were only a few names that had been recorded for that period, and at first Daniel missed what he was looking for, but there it was; Stanley Slater (1941-1943). Daniel clicked on the entry and some information about Stanley appeared. Daniel typed out a message outlining that he was making a search on behalf of his grandfather, William Carter, and enquired whether they had been friends at school and whether he remembered him. Daniel had to wait three weeks for a response, but it confirmed that Stanley was indeed Granddad Bill’s long lost friend, and what was so unexpected and coincidental was that he lived only thirty miles along the coast in Worthing. Stanley had been very enthusiastic in his replies and asked if it was possible to drive over and see his old school friend. Daniel responded by arranging a date and time when he would be at his granddad’s. Ten days later Daniel was sitting in his grandparents’ lounge when there was ring on the door bell. “I’ll get it,” said Daniel, jumping to his feet, “I know who it is….a little surprise for you.” Bill looked at Pam and shrugged his shoulders, a mystified expression passing over his face. They heard murmurs from the hallway before the door opened, and an elderly gentleman of Bill’s age entered the room wearing a brown

overcoat and clutching a shoe-box under his arm. “Billy?”, said the stranger, and Bill got to his feet uncertainly, a questioning look in his eyes. “It’s Stanley, Bill…. Stanley Slater….from Silkstream… we were at school together.” “My Lord, I don’t believe it….it can’t be, can it?” and the two old friends shook hands before embracing one another. The next half an hour passed in an instance. Pam had served tea and cake that she had made especially for Daniel’s visit, while Stanley and Billy reminisced over their boyhood and the times they had shared together. Bill laughed at how they used to go out looking for shrapnel after night raids and how they stored their collections in their secret camp in a derelict shed over Addington Road allotments. It was then that Stanley leant over the side of the settee he was sitting on, and lifted the shoe-box that had been sitting on the floor next to him. He removed the lid and pulled out a large piece of metal, “I kept a few pieces,” he said, handing the shrapnel to Billy, “Did you keep any?” “No,” Bill replied, “We evacuated a few weeks later and went to stay with my Auntie out in the country. We couldn’t carry much with us… besides we lost most everything in the raid.”
“Well, you have this piece then,” said Stanley, “as a keepsake; a memento of those dangerous times and an age of innocence when we knew no fear.” “And had no real idea of what was going on around us,” added Billy seriously. “Here’s something else,” said Stanley, and he placed a little wooden box on the coffee table in front of him. He slid back the lid to reveal three lead soldiers painted in Crimean livery. “Do you remember these? I can’t recall whether I ever showed them to you, but there were six. I went back to our house the morning after we were bombed out, but this was all that I could find.” There was a look of complete astonishment on Bill’s face, and he felt his eyes mist over. He slowly got to his feet and opened a drawer in a sideboard and pulled out a bundle of tissue paper. He slowly unravelled the tissue, and one by one placed three matching lead toy soldiers in their place in Stanley’s little wooden box. “It’s time these were returned to their rightful owner,” he said, a tear slowly trickling down his cheek. Stanley rose to his feet and the two old friends embraced.

The Alzheimer’s Society has argued that money wasted on sedative drugs should be spent on training care home staff to deliver good quality dementia care. Research has shown that anti-psychotics have minimal benefit and drastically increase the risk of medical complications, leaving people with dementia robbed of their quality of life. At Clifden House we reduce the use of all unnecessary and harmful medication, allowing our residents to lead a full and active life in a purpose built environment where the care team are able to offer the assistance that they need.

Local Sussex actor encourages dog and cat owners to join Sussex Caring Pets Peg - The Sussex Caring Pet Peg is one and a half years old, very scruffy, small and black with a ginger moustache. She’s a Schnoodle, one of the ubiquitous hypoallergenic poodle crosses. “She’s a comical sort of dog,” says her owner, TV and film actor, Paul Bazely, most well known for his role as “Troy” in ITV’S hit comedy BENIDORM, “and she’s been a huge hit with my two children. She’s very loving and she makes us all laugh all of the time. She doesn’t bark, she talks to us!” So she’s a much-loved family pet but now her role extends beyond the family. “She loves people especially children, and twice a month she wears what I call her “vest of honour” in her role as a Sussex Caring Pet (SCP) therapy dog.” Paul was approached at a local summer fete and dog show to be a celebrity volunteer member for the charity and he jumped at the chance. Peg was “auditioned” at the age of nine months to become a therapy dog, to check whether she had a suitable temperament, and she passed with flying colours. Paul and SCP therapy dog Peg have since become regular visitors to a local school for children with special needs and a care home for older people. “I get an awful lot out of it, “ says Paul, “ and Peg loves all the attention! The senior citizens enjoy petting Peg - dogs are of course, naturally therapeutic and Peg’s gentleness and responsiveness seems to relax and unlock them in some way. The elderly residents reminisce about the past in a way which I find fascinating. Peg’s presence means we have an instant topic of conversation, an instant bond she facilitates the connection between us and the talk just flows. She’s also rather partial to the biscuits they reward her with!” The trips to the special school are much more energetic. “The children are lively, full of questions about Peg and also what it’s like to be a TV actor. Peg gets a lot of exercise on those days with the children! A lot of the young adults have problems with concentration, but Peg brings out a gentleness in them, a caring side to their nature which is very touching to see.” Paul has found his work for the charity immensely rewarding: “I can see that the SCP therapy dogs really seem to show a
54
special sensitivity towards vulnerable children and adults.” These caring therapy dogs also do visits to local hospitals and hospices and their arrival is always greeted with laughter from the staff as well as the patients. “ Peg is very stimulated by her visits and she always sleeps well on her ‘working’ days! I like that the charity is locally based and helps to forge links with the local community. It has brought me closer to Peg and made me appreciate what a gift owning a pet can be - a gift which can easily be shared. As someone in the public eye it’s also rather good for me to see that on these occasions my dog gets more attention than I do!”
About Sussex Caring Pets SCP believes that animal-assisted therapy provides a source of companionship, comfort and stimulation that is unique and also underpins the work done by the professionals. Our teams of volunteers regularly visit residential care homes, special/mainstream schools, hospitals and hospices. To be suitable your dog or cat must be people-oriented - not excitable and not nervous as they may come across unexpected noises and unusual behaviour during their visit. If after a series of simple tasks we agree that the pet is suitable, then we discuss with the volunteer what kind of place they would like to visit and what might best suit their animal. Once approved, visits are usually conducted weekly or fortnightly depending on the volunteer’s availability and the needs of the place to be visited. To find out how to volunteer, or see how to support us in other ways, please visit our website: www.sussex caringpets.org or email us at info@sussexcaringpets.org or call us on 0779 646 8291. To receive an application form please send a S.A.E. to: SCP, 80 Oaklands Avenue, Saltdean, Brighton BN2 8PA or see our website. Photo: Paul Bazeley with SCP therapy dog Peg visiting a care home.

Running Commentary... Whether it was because of the ‘summer temperatures’ or the lighter evenings of the last three or four months, many runners will have probably done much longer training runs than usual, and leg muscles will not have needed so much ‘warming up’ to find the good, economical pace that successful distance running relies on. This is ideal preparation for an autumn marathon or other long race. Amongst a good variety of short races in Sussex in October are three tasty, longer challenges, beginning with the tough Lewes Downland 10 miles, but be warned. At around the 7-mile point the route becomes an energysapping mud slalom as it snakes along the bottom of a narrow valley and up to the ridge path that will lead you to the finish. Will it bring you to your knees?… Probably. Will you ask yourself why you’re doing it? … Yes!.. but runners are stubborn creatures and don’t give up! A week later, on the 14th you could do the amazing off-road Jog Shop 20-miles event, which uses much of the Downs just east of Brighton. Again, be warned… as it will have enough severe geographical hazards to make you realise that the Lewes 10 may have been just a ‘walk in the park’. To finish the month on the same mean theme is the Beachy Head Marathon on the 27th. It has probably the steepest start of any marathon followed by about twenty significant hills to climb before ending with a knee-trembling descent to the finish. It is harder than the Snowdon Marathon but you’ll recover from it quicker than the London Marathon. By the way, not all races in Sussex are tough. In fact, we are very lucky to have such a range of events within a short drive, and perhaps therein lies the key to the success of so many of our local runners. To get the most out of our beautiful sport of running it is important to mix the distances, vary the types of terrain and always try to include in your itinerary new races and fresh challenges. Check out the Sussex Races website for the calendar of events to suit all runners. One interesting story to come out of the London Marathon last April was a thought-provoking discovery by Seaford Strider, Alex Parsons. She was running with a GPS watch and it revealed that Alex had run 26.7 miles which is longer than the true marathon distance. This can be explained by the streets of London being so full of runners that she had to constantly weave left and right to overtake runners. Over the course of the route from Blackheath to the Mall this had amounted to running an extra half a mile, which at Alex’s pace would have added a good 5 minutes to her finishing time. Had she been able to maintain a ‘straight’ course Alex would have set a marathon PB. With this article being dominated by marathons, next month will focus more on shorter distance running and races. RE-ORIENT YOUR LIFE WITH INNER LANDSCAPES On beautiful day in August, I arrived at Dean’s Place Hotel, in Alfriston, to be a part of a new concept with a group of people I was yet to meet. The concept was not one that could be packaged or manufactured, but one that would only work if those people wholeheartedly entered into the spirit of the day and the event they had come to experience, initially purely by responding to a leaflet describing what was on offer. The carefully chosen venue in the heart of the Cuckmere Valley was the first and initial insight into the day that evoked some wonderful responses. To some a new place they had never visited and to others who had in the past merely driven by never realising the beauty and serenity the area and the venue had to offer. My first realisation that this day was going to deliver its promise was the immediate gelling of the group. The course was being held in a beautiful room called the Garden Room, which is surrounded on all three sides with windows which look out over the delightful grounds of Dean’s Place. The main aim of the day was to bring people together, out of their usual environments to take time out for themselves and learn the art of realisation that they can take control of their lives and indeed ‘life doesn’t have to be like that’. The overall opinion of the group was that meeting new people, conversation, learning to truly listen, not judging or advising, enabled them to open up and talk and learn about themselves in a totally new way. I was astonished that this was achieved by the group with little intervention from Barry Winbolt, the facilitator. He told us that the concept had been arrived at over a period of a year in the planning stage, and a lifetime career imparting his knowledge and experience with others to this very end. The difference to all the many events, courses and seminars that he had lead was the inclusion of walking. To take the groups outside and to re-introduce them to the one thing we humans can all share, that is free and will benefit our health and well-being and give us a natural surrounding to make the space to move forward with our own personal development. The whole day produced some great work, responses, observations, goals and plans, inspiration and many positive comments, but one will remain in my memory of the day and its achievements by one particular lady attendee when asked to sum up her feelings in a short statement ‘Powerful simplicity’. As a group we have vowed to keep the good work
on-going by keeping communication between us in the form of a Google forum, and in turn encourage each other to continue the work we started on the day so that their new outlook on their life could become their habit for life. I feel strongly that what Inner Landscapes has to offer would benefit a large number of our community. I have experienced many things in my life where I have struggled to make the transition to come through, and through my connection with the approaches these events take, have learnt and continue to learn how to take control of my own personal development. We rarely take time out purely for ourselves, feeling it’s in some way selfish to focus on our well-being, where in fact if we are not functioning well, we do not in turn function well in our daily lives and interactions with each other. We all have such strong demands on our time and seem to tell ourselves that there are not enough hours in the day to take the time we need for ourselves. Most importantly to get outside in nature, and reap the benefits that our ancestors did. Angela Chabot The event was Find Your Bearings; Reorient your Life www.innerlandscapes.co.uk Inner Landscapes retreats combine focused group work indoors with inspiring walks outside in the beautiful setting of the Cuckmere Valley.

Seaford Kurlers ‘Season of mists and mellow fruitfulness’(Keats) Did I blink or go to sleep but I do not remember The Great British Summer. Maybe a senior moment. Nevertheless this is autumn; let’s enjoy the colours and the late sunshine. Seaford Kurlers have been active since my last newsletter. The para games day at the Downs Leisure Centre was really a joy to be at. So many competitors all with lots of smiles. Eddie Kidd (right) turned up to open the day with his Olympic Torch. The guy did well. Seaford Kurlers were on hand to assist and guide the competitors in the game of Kurling first of the four types of games that were played.

Local gardener scores hat trick in 2012
Owner of Driftwood Garden in Bishopstone near Seaford has scored a gardening hat trick this summer. Geoff Stonebanks of 4 Marine Drive in Bishopstone was appointed an Asst County Organiser for the National Gardens Scheme in East Sussex in June this year, after starting to open his garden for them in 2011. This was to be the start of a gardening roll as he then found out his garden was one of the 4 finalists in the Daily Mail National Garden Competition, selected from over 1200 entries nationwide and described by Monty Don as the horticultural equivalent of the Olympics. Geoff is now the proud owner of a cast-iron blue plaque to mark this fabulous achievement, considering his is a small plot 112ft by 42ft at its widest, front and back! One of the judges said "I've seen hundreds of gardens over the 21 years of judging the Daily Mail Competition and believe me, you are up there with the best of them." Now to make the hat trick, Geoff has been told that his garden is the national winner of the Garden News Magazine Gardener of the Year Award for Best Small Garden chosen from hundreds of entries across the country,

short-listed to the final 15 then judged to be the overall winner, for which Geoff receives a trophy and vouchers for more plants to add to the several hundred he already has in both his front and back garden. To really put the cream on top of these achievements Driftwood has raised over £15000 for various charities both local and national and £8000 this summer alone. Since Geoff first opened his garden in the summer of 2009 it has gone from strength to strength, with over 50 openings, over 5000 visitors; he has baked over 2000 cup cakes! None of this would be possible without the invaluable assistance of Mark Glassman, Celia Hughes, Richard Walsh, Clare Mayers, Rosa Bottrill and Janice & Mario Dennington who have all given a tremendous amount of time and effort to support the fundraising initiatives, not to mention the generous visitors! Geoff has already set all his opening dates for 2013, for St Wilfrid's Hospice, NGS, Mayor’s Open Garden Trail (10 gardens scheduled for 2013) and Macmillan Coastal Garden Trail (20 gardens scheduled for 2013) so check out the details at www.driftwoodbysea.co.uk or contact Geoff on 01323 8992896 if you want to be part of the garden trails.
ARTWAVE SUCCESS AT DRIFTWOOD Artwave has been a fantastic success at Driftwood again despite some poor weather, especially for Macmillan Cancer Support and the artists displaying their work there! Although the visitor numbers of 847 were well down on last year, just over 22%, it did not stop those who came along from spending their hard-earned cash! Sales of the great art on display in the award winning garden were 36% up on 2012. More importantly for Macmillan the generosity of the visitors and the artists who kindly donated pieces of their work, Mark Glassman, Miranda Ellis, Anne Megan Griffiths, Celia Hughes and Chris Burchell Collins, means that a fantastic £1367 has been raised along with the proceeds from the raffle, donations and proceeds from sale of tea and cakes. Mayor of Seaford, Cllr Linda Wallrraven, made the draw for Macmillan, with garden owner Geoff Stonebanks who organised the event. All at Driftwood would like to pass on their sincere thanks to all who helped contribute to the excellent amount of money going to Macmillan.

Seahaven Lioness Club Seahaven Lioness Club serves the communities of and draws members from Seaford, Newhaven and Peacehaven. Since our very successful Golf Day in July (reported in Seaford Scene last month) most of our activities and donations seem to have been in the other towns, though we did take our stalls and games to the Seaford Donkey Derby and will continue with our Saturday stalls in Broad Street until the middle of October, weather permitting. Our next big fundraiser will be in Seaford however. This will be a Fashion Show in conjunction with M&Co and Exquisite You Bridal Boutique (who showcase their beautiful evening dresses), raising money for the Lioness’s Charity Trust, which supports (mostly local) groups and individuals with specific needs. It will be held at Seaford Golf Club in Firle Road on Tuesday 30th October, where the doors will open at 6.30pm ready for a 7pm start. There will be a wide variety of clothes on show and models of all ages and sizes! Tickets are £6 each to include coffee, but other drinks will be on sale at the bar. Tickets are available from M&Co or the
Lionesses (01323 894085 or 01323 899380). This event was very successful and enjoyable last year – we look forward to seeing many of you there! We are grateful to M&Co for their support in providing posters and tickets as well to both shops for supplying the clothes.

health that prevented them venturing out to visit friends who were in the same situation themselves and it is a known fact that many people who live on their own rarely, if ever, cook a good old-fashioned roast dinner for themselves followed by a pudding with custard! Joyce rectified this by starting a monthly lunch club that provided a really good meal in good company and transport was arranged for those who needed it. This venture was very successful and much appreciated. Sadly, Joyce died last June but those volunteers who had worked along side her, some for many years, decided they would like to continue the venture that started all those years ago. We are very grateful to Joyce’s family for their support in our endeavours and currently, the new lunch club is going from strength to strength.
Approximately fifteen years ago, this great lady had a great idea. She was aware that there were many elderly people in Seaford who sat at home alone on Sundays. The reasons were various – families that lived a long distance away or immobility and poor

The Big Art Secret In a special fund-raising collaboration Towner, the contemporary art museum for South East England, and St Wilfrid's Hospice are staging ‘The Big Art Secret’ - an exciting exhibition and online auction of original postcard-sized art by celebrities, regional and nationally known artists and by local people and hospice patients. The auction aims to raise much-needed funds for the Hospice’s new campaign - Campaign Hospice Reach – a campaign to transform end of life care for every person in our community. The exhibition and auction has attracted national attention, and now features works by David Hockney, Tracey Emin, David Cameron and even David Dimbleby. There are over 500 pieces being exhibited and auctioned as part of the initiative. You could bag yourself a bargain if you can spot a masterpiece! The Big Art Secret features post-card sized art which is signed on the back so that the identity of the artist remains secret until the end of the auction, when all is revealed. The exhibition at Towner in Eastbourne runs from 13 – 20 October with the eBay auction of all works running from 10 – 20 October. Further details and a link to the eBay shop can be found on the St Wilfrid’s Hospice website at www.stwhospice.org.

their exposure to thought-provoking theatre.
The right bums on the right seats ‘Bums on Seats!’ has become something of a mantra in the amateur and community theatre – and under-standably so. An increasingly hostile economic climate places an almost irresistible emphasis on getting the public through the turnstiles in order to maintain financial viability. But is that necessarily always an end in itself? The Synergy Theatre Company was formed five years ago with the aim of rejecting the notion that black figures in the accounts ledger are the ultimate criterion of success and survival. If we accept that the amateur theatre – much of which is of a quality to equal its professional counterpart – is an outlet for leisure pursuits and ambitions by aspiring actors, then the tenet of having to pay one’s way doesn’t really hold. If, for example, we had chosen golf as our consuming interest, the considerable costs associated with that particular pastime would be accepted without demur. Quality plays, by their very nature, attract quality audiences and our company has seen a steady growth in audience figures over the last few years, with increasing numbers of ‘regulars’ coming back for more of the same. An eclectic repertoire will always stand the test of time which is why Shakespeare, Ibsen and the modern classics have formed the backbone of our productions. This serves a double purpose. It attracts actors from across the county who are looking for opportunities to extend and hone their skills on the backs of good parts in challenging plays. It also attracts increasingly discerning audiences, many members of which have cut their play-going teeth on some of the frothier products of the playwrights’ pens, who also wish to extend
If this sounds like illusions of grandeur, that is not the intention. Theatre should accommodate the entire canon of the art-form – from slapstick comedy and farce (incredibly difficult to do really well), via musicals and straight plays to the ultimate in dramatic tragedy. Seaford already hosts two successful theatre companies and, by moving to the Clinton Centre, we are looking to augment the already extensive range of choice and to raise the town’s theatrical profile still further through positive cross-pollination. A quick visit to our website at www.thesynergytheatre.co.uk will reveal what we have planned for our 2012-2013 season.

East Blatchington Lectures Our November/Christmas lecture will be with Alan Morgan, who will talk on the subject “50 years Cruising and Sailing”. Alan is a very well-known expert on both subjects. Amongst his other skills are boat designing. Alan’s talk will be followed by our Christmas tea to round off this year’s successful season. I wish to thank you all for your support. It’s like seeing old friends every time. The talk is at St Peter’s Church Hall (or Church depending on numbers) and will start at 2.30pm.Tea will follow all for the price of £5. This of course is still for church funds - a medieval church needs constant attention. Special thanks to the group of ladies who do the teas, to Stephen Newberry and his merry band in their office in Church Street and to this magazine for printing the articles. An early Happy Christmas to you all and see you next year. Shirley Linsell

Seaford Musical Theatre Juniors liaise with award winning author Giles Paley-Phillips The Seaford Musical Theatre Junior section was delighted to take part in a story-writing workshop as part of 'Beyond The Torch Run', a community arts engagement project by local artist and Paralympian Kristina Veasey. The event was funded by the Arts Council and the workshop was led by Giley Paley-Phillips, author of 'The Fearsome Beastie' and winner of the People's Prize literary award. Ten SMT Juniors, aged between 8 and 16, took part and enjoyed creating story boards, pictures and short plays, with Giles's help, based on friendship, diversity, the local landscapes and the spirit of the passing Olympic Torch. Some of the work created by the children will be on display at the Crypt Gallery, 23 Church Street, Seaford from 10.30-6pm on Tuesday 11 September and 10.30am to 4.30pm on Wednesday 12 September as well as other workshop displays and pieces from artists Jo Brown, Simon Wood, Kristina Veasey and Tony Anderson. Further details about the project can be found at www.beyondthetorchrun.co.uk.

SEAFORD SCENE’S OBJECT OF THE MONTH Each month the Seaford Scene will identify an object of interest amongst the museum’s vast collection. Look out for the ‘Seaford Scene Object of the Month’ label which identifies it at the museum. Figurehead ‘Phoebe’ Seaford has two beautiful ships figureheads on display – the wonderfully restored and brightly coloured queen from the prow of the Peruvian which was wrecked near the Martello Tower in 1899 and a more dour unpainted lady. This second carved figure is often overlooked. She has been nicknamed ‘Phoebe’ although the name of the ship she came from has been lost to history. We know that the figureheads originally belonged to Seaford Council after being donated by a Seaford family (possibly the
Crooks who lived on the seafront). Phoebe was left to rot in the council warehouse at the end of Brooklyn Road until she was rescued by the owner of the Tea Gardens at Littlington where she was on display for many years until being donated to Seaford Museum in 1974. A benefactor has recently generously agreed to pay for Phoebe to be restored and repainted. Advice has been taken from experts and she will receive the greatest care and attention. Before she is winched out of the tower for her makeover why not call in to see her?
